I have made a lot of modifications to this monitor so I thought I probably should explain them all.
1. I added my own connector for ECG since I’m too cheap to buy the real connector, however it is still completely intact so I can switch back to the original ecg connector if I wanted to buy the real cable.
2. I built my own cable for the ecg leads, it just happens to use a 3 pin XLR connector for audio since when I’m not doing engineering I’m doing lighting and audio for the entertainment industry, so I have a lot of these connectors just laying around that I accumulate from my various entertainment industry jobs where I need fix cables or build new ones.
3. I added a serial connector for VGA out. For those that know, that’s not a VGA connector and that’s because I didn’t have a VGA connector on hand so I built and adapter cable that you can see in the first pic. I don’t know if I’ll use this but I added it because I figured I might use it later down the road.
4. I changed out the original barrel jack connector for powering the thing since the original connector’s center pin was so big I couldn’t fit a standard connector in it so by switching it out I can now power it from any old 12 volt power supply with ease.
5. I added a current limiting resistor to the speaker to make it not as loud so that my neighbors can’t hear it. (The walls are really thin here, and I have roommates, but they don’t live in the same room as me just in the same apartment)
6. I repurposed the temperature input and made it a headphone jack if I wanted to connect a set of headphones to the monitor and listen to the calming beeps that way instead of through the speaker
7. I have used the same size molex connectors for all my modifications so that if I wanted to switch the thing back to its original configuration I can. I have also added a ground wire that I soldered to motherboard so that I can easily connect my oscilloscope for finding future secrets this monitor contains on its motherboard.
Future modifications: add a current limiting resistor to the LED at the top so that it’s not as bright, try getting an ETCO2 sensor and seeing if it will just work if I connect it to the pins on the motherboard, try getting the firmware for the thing and seeing if I can get one my software engineer friends to edit the code and add some new features I want.
On a side note, all of these cheap monitors use use the same firmware so if one of the people on here who also has one of these cheap monitors can send me the user manual I’d greatly appreciate it since mine didn’t come with one.
Another note: I know that a lot of people in this community really would like an ecg monitor but they can’t justify the price of buying one. For those people I’m coming up with a solution involving an AD8232 module and a super cheap oscilloscope that you could buy for around $50. And if you are an engineer then I recommend checking out Hackaday, they have some excellent articles on diy affordable patient monitors. Also check out sparkfun they have a ton of cool modules.

To add on to the subject, before returning to college I was an intern at an aquarium that housed marine mammals, specifically, dolphins. Despite the general infamy associated with facilities housing cetaceans, the aquarium I worked at had a solid reputation in the community. So much so that people would light up when they saw me coming back from work in my uniform. They would come up to me and ask questions about our residents. Our facility hosts a plenty of entertainment programs, but our name has been well-respected for years. The secret is solid ethics and prioritizing animal wellbeing above human entertainment.
When people think about “dolphin trainers”, many feel apprehensive about the ethics of the profession. Films like “Blackfish” come to mind, people worry that the pools are constraining the animals, that life in captivity severely damages their mental and physical health. And listen, exploitation is undoubtedly abusive towards animals. However, there is a world of difference between a sketchy establishment and a reputable aquarium. Here’s how things go in mine.
I worked in the marine mammals department, so my duties revolved around our dolphins and their wellbeing. Every person working at the aquarium is held to a high standard; we are legally obligated to follow USDA guidelines for animal care. This is a policy specifically enforced in the US, USDA stands for “United States Department of Agriculture”. They are the big bosses, they conduct impromptu inspections, they are the ones who determine whether the animal is releasable or which facility it should reside in. Every single permanent resident dolphin in our aquarium is non-releasable.
How does one determine whether a dolphin is releasable or not? Well, they must be able to navigate the ocean, hunt live fish, and use echolocation. Each dolphin is tested by the government representatives (not us!); physical fitness evaluation combined with hearing test helps us make a prognosis for the patient. If you are wondering how the hearing test is performed, well, basically sensors are attached to dolphin noggin with suction cups, the big smart head is exposed to auditory evoked potentials, and the brain activity is measured. It is a safe, painless procedure that is also used on human babies. A very common disability in dolphins is hearing loss, most of our residents have it to a varying degree of severity. In all non-releasable cases, the echolocation range is no longer accessible to them. A dolphin who is unable to hear is doomed to die. Loss of echolocation means no navigation, no food, no ways to evaluate the environment and high risk of exposure to danger. Other physical issues such as severe injury play the part in decision making. The next important part is the age. Dolphin orphans under 1 year of age are automatically non-releasable. Young babies do not make it in the wild without their parents.
Now, each facility approved by the government to house cetaceans must meet the standards of care. The pools for resident dolphins are large enough and deep enough for them to be comfortable. There is enough room for rest, play, and exercise. The temperature and water quality are monitored *very rigorously* and I can vouch for that as a man who worked as an aquarist before. The food is restaurant quality. These babies eat better than all of us. There is a variety of fish we offer to our residents. Capelin, herring, mullet, silversides, you name it. Every fish is checked for quality control by hand (again, I was the one elbows deep in industrial size sink filled with ice at 5 am, going through pounds of fish like an unhinged bear), every bucket is cleaned and polished. Dolphins get their fresh water from the fish they eat, and frozen fish, while safe for consumption, is a bit dehydrated. This issue is combated by jello treats made from purified water. We want to provide diverse diet to our dolphins but we also must account for individual preferences. For example, one of aquarium’s residents hates large fish and would much rather munch on silversides, thank you very much. So her dinner includes more silversides. Diets are monitored and adjusted by the vets on duty. As for physical and mental health, there is a method to madness. The “tricks” that come to mind when you think of “dolphin trainings” are not for human entertainment. Our supervisors make sure to introduce certain physical activities that mimic dolphin’s natural behavior and encourage them to be physically active. Remember, dolphins are mammals, they breathe air. They need to be in good physical shape to keep themselves afloat. Making a few hundred pounds of muscle move around seems like a daunting task, so we always, ALWAYS use positive reinforcement. In simple terms, we reward behaviors we want to see and ignore behaviors we do not want to see. This principle applies across the board, including with mental training. Dolphins are incredibly intelligent little guys, you can’t have them bored or frustrated. Playing mental games with them, teaching them “match the sample” activities and rewarding their successes keeps them busy, stimulated, and actively engaged with their team. The best part is that you can teach a dolphin how to participate in medical procedures. Want to teach a dolphin to present their flukes for bloodwork? You can do that! Desensitizing dolphins to medical care and equipment: 1) lowers the stress and keeps the animal comfortable, 2) keeps the staff safe while performing medical treatment on a mountain of muscle with ungodly amounts of power, 3) stimulates the dolphin’s brain through practice and memorization of these procedures.
When guests come to our aquarium, they don’t see a performance, they see the day-to-day care procedures. When pandemic hit and no visitors were allowed, our supervisors still followed the established routine (while following health guidelines and wearing masks). Dolphins still exercised, still played with toys cause its their ordinary life. It’s super fun and interesting, so we invite folks to watch and learn. The revenue from visitors keeps the facility running cause such is the life of a non-profit. Dolphins don’t entertain humans, humans entertain themselves by watching dolphins go through their daily life at an animal care center. Of course we have presentations and educational programs, but everything is secondary to our and dolphins’ safety. For example, one day the dolphin that was supposed to participate in a presentation wasn’t feeling like it and refused to swim into the pool observable to the public. So what did our supervisors do? They told the interns to hop into the water and pretend they were dolphins. For half an hour there was a bunch of twenty-somethings splashing around and carrying toys from one side of the pool to the other. It was a fun solution to the problem that did not put an undue burden on the animal.
I can go on forever about the nuances of caring for marine mammals. Just know that reputable aquariums are like retirement facilities for the big guys. They are well-fed, safe, entertained, and encouraged to engage in as many natural behaviors as possible. Not only do facilities like these provide safe and comfortable environment for non-releasable animals, working with them allows us to study them, learn about their needs, and improve our animal rehabilitation efforts. Some of these animals help not just their species, they help humans too. One of the most famous cases is that of Winter the Dolphin. Winter lost her flukes as a young baby dolphin after entanglement in crab nets. Necrosis was unavoidable, the flukes fell off on their own, and the girl was left an amputee. She would���ve never survived in the wild, but in human care she flourished, becoming an ambassador of her species, raising money for her home, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, and inspiring disabled humans from all over the world. Her case is extraordinary and definitely deserves attention. She was the first dolphin to wear a prosthetic tail. This prosthesis was an essential part of her physical therapy and did wonders for her health. She was well-loved by her community and especially by the people who had the honor of working with her. Winter passed away at the age 16 due to inoperable intestinal abnormality while under the care of her team. Her ashes were returned to her birthplace, the Gulf of Mexico. I urge you to learn about her story. I had the pleasure of meeting her in person while she was alive, and that little bubbly dolphin is the reason why I am so adamant to be a part of marine conservation efforts
One thing that pisses me off is people seeing fish in aquariums (the establishments, not home aquariums) and being like “It’s so sad because the ocean is so big and the tank is so small and they’ll never know freedom blah blah blah-“ I’m not talking about sharks and marine mammals here but the majority of fish are not at all bothered by being in an aquarium instead of the open ocean. Like, I personally would love to be a little clown fish in one of those big reef tanks. Fed regularly. Whole team of people monitoring my health and well-being. No predators. Medicated if I show signs of illness. Aquarium fish have cushy gigs in comparison to their wild companions.
