Lupin & Tonks: Order of the Phoenix Moments
If you've ever looked for all the Lupin & Tonks moments in OotP, look no further. I spent some time today compiling all the times we see Lupin and Tonks together (so you don't have to), with a few of my own notes for each of these moments. Something that came up for me while compiling this: we rarely see Tonks without Remus. If Tonks is anywhere near Harry, you can almost guarantee that Lupin is there too. I don't think this is coincidental.
We meet Tonks when we see Lupin in The Advance Guard. Tonks has a few sassy lines until Lupin introduces her as "And this is Nymphadora--". Tonks of course tells him not to call her Nymphadora (she calls him Remus), and then Remus finishes with "--Nymphadora Tonks, who prefers to be known by her surname only." My own notes: like many Remadora fans, I see this as subtle flirtation on Remus's part. Is it conscious? Probably not. I like to think he likes to rile her up every now and then because he finds it charming.
Lupin and Tonks carry Harry's trunk together in the next chapter. I picture Lupin behind Tonks so he can check out her trunk ;)
We learn from Harry that Remus steps in to help with cleaning Grimmauld Place, and sometimes they're joined by Tonks (she helped remove a ghoul from a toilet). This gives us an idea that Remus and Tonks are spending time together--with others around, presumably--in addition to any Order missions. I have a little HC that when Tonks comes over and Remus is at GP, he drops whatever he's doing to come see her and help with cleaning (even if he hates it).
We see Tonks again at the beginning of ch. 7, The Ministry of Magic. Harry wakes up and finds Arthur, Molly, Sirius, Lupin, and Tonks waiting for him. Tonks is tired but immediately greets Harry. Meanwhile, Remus: "Lupin glanced at Harry, then said to Tonks, 'What were you saying about Scrimgeour?'" I find it interesting that Tonks greets Harry while Remus just takes a look at him and goes instantly back to talking to Tonks. Harry: mild panic over upcoming hearing. Remus: glance and go back to talking to his crush. I HC that at this point, Remus is still unaware that he is developing feelings for Tonks, and Tonks is clueless about it.
Tonks shows up for the prefect party thrown for Ron and Hermione. Harry notices her with Sirius, Lupin, and Kingsley. Tonks wears her hair long and red, which makes Harry think she looks like Ginny's older sister (a high compliment, considering Harry finds Ginny very pretty). Tonks also says she wasn't a prefect, and then Harry finds out Sirius wasn't either, nor was his father, James.
Both Lupin and Tonks accompany the kids to King's Cross. Tonks goes with Harry (she's morphed as little old lady), while Lupin arrives with Ginny, Fred, and George. I picture the gang going back to GP, with Sirius in a great mood, and then Lupin and Tonks having some more bonding moments.
(The only time we see Tonks without Lupin is when Arthur is attacked and the kids go to St. Mungo's. It's Mad-Eye and Tonks who take the kids across London to the hospital.)
Lupin and Tonks escort the kids back to Hogwarts via the Knight Bus. Tonks is disguised as a tall, tweedy woman, and Lupin leads the way to the bus. It's a bit unclear if Lupin and Tonks take the Knight Bus back to London or if they Apparate away. As Harry only mentions the bus having disappeared, I assume that Lupin and Tonks went back on the bus to have some quality time together.
(We get a good bit of Lupin when Harry sees Snape's Worst Memory. One of the few times Tonks isn't around Lupin, but I think it's the middle of a workday and Remus and Sirius have nothing better to do than sit around at GP and relive the good old days.)
Tonks and Lupin show up at the Ministry in ch. 35, Beyond the Veil. Tonks gets seriously injured by Bellatrix and topples down many stone seats. Lupin tells Harry to take the others and go. Then Sirius dies and Lupin holds Harry back from going after him. We learn later that Tonks likely had to spend some time at St. Mungo's, but she should make a full recovery. I always like various interpretations of this injury and its impact on Remus: does he panic when he realizes she's unconscious? Is he there with her at the hospital? Did he bring her there? Is that when he meets her parents? So many options for these scenes.
The last time we see Tonks in OotP is at King's Cross. She's recovered, has bright pink hair, patched jeans, and a Weird Sisters t-shirt. She's standing next to a shabby-looking Lupin. She joins in the effort of intimidating the Dursleys, her sentence being finished by none other than Lupin. Tonks: "The point is, if we find out you've been horrible to Harry--" Lupin, finishing her thought: "--and make no mistake, we'll hear about it."
All of these moments are from Harry's POV. We can assume that there are missions that Lupin and Tonks did together, and many more moments of bonding at Grimmauld Place with the Order. Tonks is with Lupin when we meet her for the first time in OotP and again when we see her at the end.
From Harry's POV, we can't really see their relationship building, but given what we know later in the series, it's not hard for me to imagine each of these moments as bigger points in time when Lupin and Tonks grow closer to one another.

Keith & Chantal Tkachuk on how Matthew & Brady's vibrant personalities stem from colourful St. Louis roots
It is an attitude and household like theirs in suburban St. Louis that has produced one of the league’s most colourful players off the ice, and one of the most entertaining players on it.
“I assume Brady is the off-ice one and Matthew is the on-ice one?” said Keith, laughing.
Brady’s infectious personality has been on display via several renditions of "Mr. Brightside" posted online by fans thrilled to see him letting loose in local establishments.
The toolkit Matthew has used to become one of the more polarizing and prolific 100-point scorers includes an innate ability to agitate while dazzling with memorable, between-the-leg finishes.
In a league full of beige, both engaging, natural leaders stand out.
Brady, captain of the Ottawa Senators, became a folk hero in Calgary last spring with his double-fisted celebrations in support of his brother’s playoff run.
Matthew, an alternate captain for the Florida Panthers, single-handedly resurrected the Battle of Alberta with a series of hits on Zack Kassian he punctuated with, “If he doesn’t want to get hit, then stay off the tracks.”
And the hits just keep on coming, from both.
“They’re not boring like a lot of guys in the NHL, tell ya that much,” said Keith, who was one of the more personable players of his era.
“I think it’s good they have a personality. It’s good for them, it’s good for the league, good for the team and it’s good for you guys.
“You don’t want to talk to boring guys with programmed answers.”
Keith said he remembered watching Matthew on the After Hours segment on Hockey Night in Canada as a rookie, conducting the whole interview with his head down.
“I said, ‘What are you doing? Get your head up and talk,’” said Keith.
“But now it’s like this (as he snaps his fingers).
“I watched Matthew interviewed last night and he was pretty good. He adds some normal stuff to it that people like. It’s not about the same answers. He does a good job.
“I think it’s being around the locker room for a long time, being comfortable.”
Both Tkachuks are armed with tremendous confidence, no doubt cultivated while growing up at their father’s knee in NHL dressing rooms.
They’ve honed their interview skills under the glare of demanding Canadian hockey markets where all eyes are on their every move, and they know it.
Yet, they continue letting their personalities shine though.
Brady certainly does that well with a microphone in his hand, belting out The Killers’ anthem like he did just a few weeks ago when a fan posted him performing with teammates.
“The good news is every time he does it, he’s with his fiancée, so it’s not like he’s out by himself,” said Keith.
“If you were in Phoenix or New York no one would care, or know you. But you’re in Canada, so I just told him, you’ve got to be careful.
“It’s not like he’s being a goofball, idiot, drunk. He’s not like that. He just turned 23 years old, but he thinks like a 16-year-old.
“He just likes to have fun.”
Sure, it’s all good fun like he’s had for years in his parents' basement with friends and family.
“He has a contagious personality – he always has a smile on his face, seems to be in a good mood and is fun to be around,” said Mom, sharing her theory on why his song is the Killers’ classic.
“I think that’s just a popular college song – a fun song that the kids go crazy over.
Draft parties, grad parties, Christmas parties, you name it, the Tkachuks want to ensure everyone is included, as they value the importance not only of teammates bonding, but the spouses as well.
“One of the best parties was an Easter party we had one of the last years Keith played – we had the whole team over and we got this huge Easter bunny costume and Matthew got into it,” said Chantal, who Keith calls Julie McCoy, the cruise director from Love Boat.
“Matthew was about 12 and he just nailed it, holding the kids’ hands.
“All the moms were oohing and ahhing over how great an Easter bunny he was.
“Honest to god, I still get random texts from moms who said, 'That was just the best.'”
“They like the wine cellar and the scotch,” said a smiling Keith, who taught both his sons to revere their team’s support staff.
“I know what it felt like to be a young guy and not having anywhere to go, so I think it’s important to have that open-door policy.”
That policy extended to the family basement, where current Blues star Robert Thomas lived his first two years in the league before renting Matthew’s St. Louis home this fall.
Keith has three TVs mounted in the basement so he can watch Thomas and both of his sons at the same time. After games, Keith would take on a fatherly role with Thomas and wait up for him to get home to share thoughts on his performance.

Bound by duty and haunted by the ghost of his father, Diluc strives to uphold the Ragnvindr legacy while also navigating the dreaded social season. Vowing to find love and continue the Ragnvindr line, Diluc chases the coattails of the man he thinks his father wished for him to become.
Failed love affairs and blunders drive him right back out of society, but in retracing the footsteps of another lifetime, Diluc might just find what he is looking for❞
[See future updates on ao3 @ dearbraus]
The day Viscount Ragnvindr died was not meant to be a tragic one.
Diluc, the young master and heir to the Ragnvindr clan had just turned seventeen. Though still cherubic and shrouded in the essence of boyhood, Diluc had stepped into society that day. Celebrations of grandeur crept around the corner with each passing day until April thirtieth had finally arrived after an arduous winter, he couldn’t wait to finally relish in the frivolities and luxuries his father saved only for the most special of occasions.
His younger brother, Kaeya had been so excited too. He could hardly sleep and rose before the sun to wish Diluc the happiest of days. Kaeya loved parties, the theatricality of it all but he was only fifteen, still too young to spend more than a few precious moments soaking up the festivities before Adelinde, their governess, helped him to bed. That day though, he was allowed to dance to his heart's content and sip on sweet lemonade until his tongue grew tart.
It was all the two boys could have ever wanted, and their father, Crepus could feel his heart swell thrice its size, adoration and pride filling every fibre of his being. There truly could never be a father quite so proud of his sons in all of Dulcis, so overwrought with love that he’d pluck the sun, the moon, and all of the stars in the sky if they so wished for it.
How unfortunate it was that as the hours bleed late into the night that tragedy would befall the Ragnvindr family. In the span of a few short minutes, Diluc and Kaeya’s world went from that of a dream to a nightmare.
A chill drifted into the ballroom, ice biting through the warmth that collected amongst the throngs of bodies spinning around the room in a waltz. Diluc, ever the dutiful son, slipped between cheerful embraces in search of the miscreant so his father wouldn’t have to but all he found was broken glass and his father's crumpled figure. Silky strands of hair spun by scarlet lay splayed across the carpet, dampened by streaks of metallic crimson. It stained Diluc’s shirt, the new one the modiste embroider as a gift to the family, and seeped into the cream-coloured flowers of his mother's favourite carpet as Diluc gathered Crepus into his arms.
Diluc didn’t realise he had screamed until others came rushing in, a stampede of prying busybodies who traded gossip like children traded marbles. His father's blood bubbled from the gaping wound that tore through his chest, his hands not enough to quell the bleeding no matter how he tried. Tears hot and angry stung his eyes, a frustrated cry clawing at his throat, fervently willing Diluc to feel the anguish that had struck him. But, Diluc felt nothing, too numbed with panic to do anything other than compress the wound, until Kaeya’s desperate plea reached his ears.
It was caught between a haggard breath and a flurry of sniffles, hardly coherent for anyone but Diluc.
He doesn’t remember much from that night, but Diluc remembers how raw his chest felt when he barked out an order for Kaeya, willing him to stay back and close his eyes. Kaeya didn’t need to watch another father die. He had already lost too much at such a young age, his heart would break. Diluc could not bear the thought of it.
That night, minutes before the clock struck midnight, Crepus took his last breath. His two sons' names lingered on his tongue as the light faded from his eyes— his dying breath lost on the eager ears which desperately sought out those last few words.
Diluc was gone the morning after Crepus had been laid to rest, the only evidence of his departure was an empty armoire and Crepus’ timepiece having gone missing. His bedroom in the Aquilae Estate had been largely untouched, to the naked eye it’d have seemed like an ordinary living quarter but the life that had once occupied had been swiftly snuffed out and the servants knew it the moment they had gone to refresh his linens. The young master had deserted his newly acquired postage, swiftly slipping into obscurity.
He was meant to attend the Akademiya, Alicante’s most prestigious post-secondary school, come fall. Elzer, Crepus’ steward, contacted the institute every few weeks in the hopes of hearing any news in regards to Diluc’s welfare but no matter how often the man sent word, he never learned anything more of his status. Until he was slated to begin classes and a notice of prolonged absence was sent to the estate, along with a hefty fine for overdue tuition fees– Kaeya who was still but a boy had to foot the bill now that he had assumed the position of head of the Raginvindr clan. There was no amount of money or tutors or governesses that could have prepared him for losing an entire family for the second time.
Even with Elzer’s guiding hand, Kaeya’s nimble knees buckled beneath the weight of aristocracy. At nights when he felt lost and that familiar feeling of loneliness began to creep in with the self-doubt, all Kaeya could find himself wishing for was his big brother. In his eyes, he knew everything; Diluc was the smartest person Kaeya had ever met, even smarter than their father. But, Diluc was gone. He’d disappeared faster than the moon and the stars did when morning sat on the horizon, though he never reappeared when evening came as they did.
When Diluc did return, Kaeya was nearly a man grown.
Though, society with all its barbs did not see it that way.
Kaeya had been a man since the mere age of fifteen and now, at twenty he was everything that Diluc should have been. College-educated, knowledgeable about the Ragnvindr business, and ready for marriage. Diluc was none of those things, he was no more grown than he had been at eighteen though now he sported reddish stubble on his jaw, his features weathered from whatever travels he embarked on. He looked every bit the man Crepus had been at his age, a ghost occupying a fleshy body. It terrified the staff when he returned one winter's night. The sun had long since been laid to rest and snow fell from the sky in big white clumps. Diluc appeared on the veranda of the Aquilae Estate with nothing but the singular case he had taken within him so long ago.
Anyone could have mistaken him for his father.
But, Crepus too had long since laid to rest and the young master was all that remained of him. The plains of Diluc’s face were but a map of their late master, a mirror image that forced a bleak reminder into their hearts when he stepped through his childhood home for the first time in five years. A stranger now, no longer the joyful young man they knew him to be. He wandered the halls like a well-worn memory that had begun to fray at the edges. Whatever sadness was felt by the servants, was swallowed by a far greater melancholy that tugged at Diluc’s heartstrings like a long-lost melody.
They tugged at Kaeya’s too.
For he too was a stranger in the eyes of a man who was once his brother.
He wore the face of familiarity well, but when Diluc gazed upon his features, ones that he once knew so well, neither man could feel anything but estranged.
Estranged by distance, time, and loss.
It all hung in the air between them, unspoken, neither willing to be the first to bare his soul or tear open the newly healed wounds that throbbed with each passing second.
It would hurt too much, to hash out the feelings both had worked so diligently to bury deep within their souls. They harboured two lifetimes worth of sadness and heartache, and somehow it would hurt even more.
Diluc longed too, though. He longed to pour his heart and every fibre of his being before his brother. To speak the words that he should have long ago, they sat heavily on his chest and danced upon the tip of his tongue, taunting him as his throat swallowed itself up until he choked on his guilt. That’s what kept him truly silent, the guilt of it all. Diluc was selfish, that much he had accepted but to speak it into the air and allow it to settle, he could never do. To admit it, was to admit that he was everything his father had not raised him to be, and to be a disappointment to Crepus was all that he had feared.
So, brothers turned to strangers.
One silent, a frown permanently etched onto his once cherubic features; the other boisterous, he filled the gaps of silence with well-crafted paragraphs that spoke too much but revealed far too little.
It was strangely befitting for the brothers to play such a balancing act. Two sides of the same coin, aching to be melted and returned to the earth once more.
As days turned into weeks, and then months into years, no warmth had yet to fill the hearth of the place they called home. A layer of frost prickled their skin and kept their feet pressed firmly in place so they remained five feet apart, always. Diluc would muse to himself that it was better to keep the distance because the grief might hurt less in the end. How sweet, naiveté could be
It was a tragedy to see all that Kaeya had lost in a matter of minutes.
The relief that should have filled him the moment he saw his brother's face once more did not fill him, instead, it was dread. Dulcis, like all of Alicante, was built around the egos of eldest sons. They may as well have put all the stars and the moon into the night skies with how they were cradled like young gods, always deserving, forever in want. It mattered nought that Kaeya is the son who stayed and strived to carry his father's legacy upon his narrow shoulders despite being no less of an unknowledgeable boy than he had been the night before Crepus died. He knew little of the family business, as a second son there was no need for him to learn more than how to assist his brother's pursuits. A lifetime of lessons was compressed into mere months and as years with no family became more familiar than it was strange, all that Kaeya had built for himself, for the Ragnvindr name, was to be ripped from between his bare fingers.
Diluc was home.
The title of Viscount Ragnvindr was his, Kaeya was simply keeping it warm for the day that Diluc finally felt strong enough to bear the burden that was noble society.
It would have been cruel of Kaeya to resent Diluc for returning home. He spent countless, sleepless nights praying to whomever would listen, to return Diluc home safely, or even for a letter detailing his wellbeing. For years, Kaeya wished for nothing more than to see his brother again, but when he stood before him in an ill-fitting wool coat, Kaeya wished that no one had listened.
Kaeya knew what it made him, an awful brother and an even worse person– but, was it fair? If you’d ask Kaeya while he lay spread bare, chest heaved and sweat dabbled he’d confess that he did not think it was. As much as he loved Diluc, the closet remnant of his own flesh and blood, why should he be so entitled to a title he never longed for? Kaeya did, he spent many balmy summer days dreaming of when the King or Queen would be so gracious as to bestow a title to him.
Lord Alberich sounded divine, far better than sir.
If Kaeya had been a worse man he may have fought it. His fathers raised him to be good and kind. Kaeya could never hurt Diluc, he could not bare for him to feel as hollow as he did. It was the respectable thing to do, to step down as Viscount and shepherd Diluc into society and into the Ragnvindr clan.
It’s what Crepus would have wanted.

Dagger Squad Takes Universal Studios 🌎| Top Gun Maverick Headcanon
Link to my TGM masterlist
So I just got back from Universal Florida & had this idea so imma use that location instead of Hollywood cause I’m more familiar with Florida
Going to Universal Studios Orlando with the Dagger Squad would look like:
So like any amusement park, adults become children….and that’s exactly how you and the squad become when you walk through the entrance of Universal Studios Orlando Resort.
Y’all pitch in to stay at one of the resort hotels for a couple nights to get use out of both parks and not having to fork out $$ on an Uber by just taking advantage of the complementary bus/water taxi. You’ll room with at least two others and if Mav is with y’all he’s literally the dad. Expect him to hang on to your stuff if he’s not planning on going on a certain ride as the rest of y’all.
Mav also will be like, “does everyone have their tickets, wallet, phone, sunglasses, etc?” He & Bob are the ones packing extra water bottles to make sure everyone is hydrated.
Once y’all are in the City Walk either one of two things will happen: you all will collectively select a park to start together, or, split the squad up. For this scenario, y’all stay together and it is utter chaos. Fanboy is vlogging to his instagram story with Coyote shouting, “oh my God, it’s the Minions!!” When he sees the Minions ride but pouts at the almost 3 hour wait time.
The first thing y’all do is the 3D/4D Transformers for some nostalgia purposes and the guys are just freaking out by how cool the attraction is. Phoenix remains at the front of the line cause she’s in charge of relaying how many is in y’all’s party to the attendant. When y’all get on the ride (seat arrangements are you, Rooster, Phoenix & Bob in the front, payback Fanboy, Hangman & Coyote in the middle and Mav gets the back with a family of three beside him. But he doesn’t mind cause he gets to witness the entertainment that is the guys shouting at the sudden twists & spins), one would not think y’all are some of the greatest fighter pilots the world has seen, cause it’s like y’all are teenagers watching a horror movie.
Men In Black is a competition for all of you. Hangman’s all like, “get ready to taste defeat,” but ends up scoring second to last. Bob pulls out the win after hitting the 100,000 point bonus.
Expect Rooster to be dancing along with the Blues Brothers when they perform their show if you’re passing by it. He also has a dance-off with one of the construction show dancers which brought in a large crowd to witness.
The mummy was rated y’all’s best group picture for that day when you failed to mention it was an indoor coaster when they thought it was something else. The drop had Bob and Fanboy hanging onto each other screaming while you’re pointing to the camera with a big smile. Mav has it framed on his office wall back on base and in his garage.
ET was one for the child’s heart and when y’all had to give the names to the attendant for the passport you all gave your call signs. You never thought in a million years you’d hear ET’s voice say y/c/s, and the names of your fellow pilots but it was something to remember.
For lunch y’all got food at the food truck in the Simpsons land which was worth it. Of course it’s park food so expect a buck and coin but y’all were so hungry at that point you didn’t care.
On a whim y’all decided to see the Hollywood Horror Makeup Show & Phoenix is the one to get pulled on stage. “Oh no,” she mumbles with a smile as she stands while everyone has their camera out to capture the moment. Coyote makes a face and looks away when the fake blood appears on her arm when the guy fakes cutting into it because the man was like, “how the hell did he do that?!”
Since it had a short wait, you quickly all jump in line for the Hollywood Rip-Rocket. It was the first outdoor rollercoaster and what made it great was getting to chose a song to listen to as you rode it. Rooster chose “Glamorous” by Fergie which you heard him belting out at the top of his lungs. “FIRST CLASS UP IN THE—AHHH!!”
The Fast & Furious ride became a source of many great inside jokes. “Guys remember, we’re a family.” “You hear that? Family.” “Why don’t y’all love me like they love each other?” The ride itself was average but the music and the jokes is what made it fun.
There’s going to be selfies in each line so make sure your camera roll is not full. Y’all are stopping almost every 20 steps to take pictures and Mav will literally be like a proud dad taking them. Thankfully some people will stop and ask if he wants to be in it to which you’re grabbing him by the collar to get in the photo. “Let’s go Papa Mav, you’re in this family too.”
Escape from Gringotts had a long wait so y’all decide to come back the next day to start with that. That’s also when you entered Diagon Alley for the first time and felt like you were Harry Pottet gathering his stuff for school. So you damn well know y’all are in Olivanders picking out your wands. “Do I wanna be basic and get Harry’s?” “Ohmigosh they have Luna’s—I want it.” “The Elder wand looks so dope. Question is: do I want it as Dumbledors or Grindlewald?” “Who here is a hufflepuff—oh wait Newt is!”
A cheers is in store when y’all get your first butterbeer, which has almost all of you get some foam on your nose. You guys all then do Gringotts before seeking out the interactive wand spots in Diagon Alley & finding the hidden Knocturn Alley before quickly riding the Jimmy Fallon Race Through New York and wait almost 2 hours for minions. “This better be worth the wait, Coyote.” Thankfully it was funny and cute, but you wouldn’t wait more than an hour for it in the future.
So now that y’all have checked off all the rides and most of the shows in the Universal park, it’s time to head to Island of Adventure. And what better way than to take the Hogwarts Express. Since some of y’all have been to London and seen the real Kings Cross Station, y’all were impressed by how put together the attraction was. Rooster has a picture of you and Phoenix embracing with your wands up pointing to the Platform 9 3/4 sign.
So Island of Adventure has A LOT of thrill rides, which what are those perfect for ?? Pictures. And boy do you have quite the album by the end of your trip.
So the train ends in Hogsmede so of course y’all are freaking out over the fact you’re in Hogwarts. “GUYS WE FINALLY GOT OUR HOGWARTS LETTER!!” So there’s a literally photoshoot going on at the bridge between Hogmede & Jurassic Park. The boys all got their aviators on, showing off their houses and wands while girls and guys are checking them out. There’s photos of you on Paybacks back, dueling Hangman & Bob, cute ones with Phoenix, Mav & Fanboy and mixtape style with Coyote and Rooster.
Hagrids motor bike has A LONG wait, but forbidden journey doesn’t so y’all do that one first and thank God you didn’t eat anything because that sure got you with the motion sickness. The photo is hilarious with majority of you looking confused, petrified & downright frightened. Once anyone who felt a little off got better y’all do the Hippogriff mini coaster. That in itself was quite the sight with the amount of 6’ft men y’all had in your group. Payback and Rooster had to have their own cart cause their legs could barely fit.
After a quick snack and the fact it was heating up with Florida weather, the water rides became your next stop. And once again, y’all have your favorite group picture for that day because the drop combined with the animatronic T-Rex chomping down on the Jurassic Park River Adventure made for some great reactions. You and Phoenix were hanging on for dear life when it felt like y’all’s asses were lifting off the seats. In the photo Rooster has his arm practically holding you down. The ones who came out soaked were Bob, Fanboy, Payback, and Mav though everyone else got a decent amount of water.
Oh and Coyote did his BeReal on the drop just as the T-Rex is coming down which you were amazed he even managed to capture it. He was in the front so everyone behind him got in the photo and you can just see Bob in the corner look like he’s looking death in the eyes. Coyote sends it to the bestbereals on Twitter and it goes viral with almost 500k likes and 200k retweets.
Y’all decide to do Velocicoaster, Hagrids, & Hulk at night when people leave for the wait time to be shorter. In the mean time the gang gets their own boat for the Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and that’s where you, Phoenix and Hangman get drenched because it felt like y’all were personally targeted. “Oh fuck, not again !” Every turn had y’all facing the direction of a fountain or passing a gusher as it goes off and landing on your side. It’s so bad you three have to go to the standing dryer once y’all get off. “I should’ve brought a change of clothes.”
The ripsaw falls ride had similar reactions to the River Adventure but not as bad—although Coyote nearly lost his sunglasses. After a quick snack break y’all do the Spider-Man (which had a lot of nostalgia for some of the guys) and decide to do an early dinner so later on when people leave for their reservations the wait times would decrease.
On your way out you hit the King Kong Ride which turned out to be a 3D/4D ride and had y’all surprised the entire time. Jake was next to you and there were times where he kept bumping your shoulder cause he was jumping at the loud sounds and how realistic the 4D felt. “Jesus Christ!” When Kong was fighting the dinosaurs you could hear Rooster and Payback going “Get ‘em Kong!! Show him who’s king!!”
There are many places in the City Walk to eat so there’s plenty of options. Since some of the guys wanted to go watch the game playing at the NBC sports restaurant, you call in advance to see if they have a wait time and luckily they had an opening for your party. “Okay let’s hussle, Hagrids is at a hundred minutes and it ain’t getting lowers than that so y’all better eat like it’s your last meal on earth !”
Mav is that man who’s taking pictures of y’all at the table. You wink at the camera while Bob is smiling beside you as Payback puts bunny ears behind him. Hangman and Rooster are making bets on the game, Fanboy is updating his social media posts and Coyote is Tic-tac-toe with Phee. Everyone is making conversation as they drink and eat. It’s a great time and y’all leave a generous tip to your poor server who it was her first week and was getting used to handling big parties. She did pretty good and gave y’all a military discount after noticing the different navy jackets and hats y’all were wearing.
After dinner you and Phoenix go to the Toothsome’s Chocolate Emporium to share a $17 milkshake which was HUGE. y’all were gonna get your own but saw what they looked like and went “yeah let’s split it.” Rooster keeps eyeing it and goes, “yo let me get a sip,” every five minutes. Eventually you and Phee get full and let him have the rest which makes him look like a kid on Christmas morning.
So once everyone’s stomach was settled it was time to get back to the park. And like y’all wanted, the wait times were shorter compared to the 70+ minutes they were when you left. First y’all walked all the way back to Hogwarts for Hagrids Motorbike and it was well worth the hour and half wait. It’s a two seater so you all had to figure out who was going with who. You rode with Fanboy in the front row which was amazing cause he’s the biggest HP nerd you know so seeing his expressions on the ride was memorable in itself.
Velocicoater….was the best experience ever with the Squad. Mav sat this one out because he was like “I’m too old for that,” after seeing the high climb followed by the drop. What made it cool was it was dark outside by then so the ride was lit up and y’all got Rows 2-5 with it going: you & Phoenix, Hangman & Coyote, Payback & Rooster, and Fanboy & Bob. Hearing Coyote scream bloody murder the entire way was the highlight of your day. The second time it accelerated for the climb you heard “I CANNOT BELIVE YALL MADE ME DO THIS!” With the faint sound of Rooster & Paybacks laughter in the distance.
I mean y’all pull close to 8+ gs on the daily, but a roller coaster going maybe not even 1 has him shitting his pants. The photo of Coyote because his contact icon on your phone. “Why do you and Phee come out great and here I am looking like I just came out of G-Loc?”
The last ride was The Incredible Hulk and again, you got front row with Payback, Hangman & Coyote (which he hated). The loops had him reach out to hold your hand and thanking Jesus when it was over. “Finally we’re done.”
The last day there was really no game plan since you guys had went on petty much everything. At that point you guys split it up and would met up and switch groups if there was something someone wanted to go again and another person was like “let’s go I’ll do it with you.” Those who wanted to do the thrill rides again stayed together while some went to do the 4D ones. “I’m doing Velocicoater again cause that was fun as fuck. Who’s coming?” “Me. Aye let’s do front row.”
“Coyote, cmon let’s do Hulk again—it’s 20 minutes!” “Hell no!”
“Does anyone wanna share a turkey leg with me?” “Shit, yeah I’ll Venmo you right now.”
“We gotta get Voodoo donuts on our way out tonight.” “They have one here?” “You’re telling me you didn’t see all those people in the City Walk with pink boxes? It was right by the NBC restaurant, Bob!”
At the end of the night y’all meet up in Hogwarts to watch the lighting of the castle and their projection show. Mav, being the surrogate dad he is, got there early to secure a good spot. With one last butterbeer you stood in between Hangman and Fanboy to watch the show. Jake had his arm around you, allowing you to lean into him while being careful not to spill the drink as you paid attention to the castle.
It was sad for everyone having to leave but it was the best weekend you could ask for with the people you cared for most. These were your best friends, your team, your wingmen. No matter where you guys went in your career and even if it would be the last time in awhile before you all could get together again, you would always remember when the Dagger Squad took Universal Studios.

Happy birthday to Daniel Kitson and Peter Kay! It’s one of those completely useless facts I know, that those two have the same birthday (different years, obviously) , but it’s a fact that I like, as far as useless facts go. It feels like a comic book, someone sharing a birthday with the villain in his origin story that made him what he is. Daniel Kitson might dispute the claim that Peter Kay made him what he is, but I would argue that before his experiences with Peter Kay put him off the idea of garnering publicity, he was the type of person who would go on TV in the type of role he played in Phoenix Nights. And the type of person who would do that could not have the stand-up career that Daniel Kitson went on to have (not that people who also do acting can’t be great stand-ups or whatever, just that Kitson literally based his stand-up during most of the 00s, and really for the years since then as well, on his USP of being the guy who eschewed mainstream publicity).
Actually, before he met Peter Kay, Daniel Kitson was a guy who’d take roles in various things. Like this awful movie from 2001, in which Daniel Kitson played a bus driver who appeared in three scenes, for a total of 36 seconds of screen time. And the reason I know it's an awful movie, as well as the reason I know Kitson appeared in it for 36 seconds, is that I'm the person who watched that entire movie just so I could cut out all of Kitson's scenes and then cut them together and export it and send it to my friend, who uploaded the YouTube video I linked above. That's not my YouTube account, but I am the one who sat through that whole movie to make that video happen. I think Daniel Kitson's been heckled with the words "Let's get ready to rumble" plenty of times, but just once someone should heckle him with "Brace yourselves!" just to see if he even remembers the reference. Or ask him to sign a Dog Eat Dog DVD.
Seriously though, the fact that he took that role in that movie suggests that Kitson was trying to build up a portfolio for an acting career (he did go to drama school), and just think how different things could have been if Peter Kay had just been less of a dick in 2002. Stand-up fans have a lot to thank Peter Kay for, for being a dick in 2002 and sending Kitson down another path.
The point of this post is happy birthday to those guys; it's also my roommate's birthday today but that doesn't fit into a comic book narrative so much. We had a party on the weekend for him, and I bought him a poster of a shitty meme because that's what he asked for as a birthday gift, he has terrible taste in comedy. He might like Peter Kay.

Previous Chapter | Series Masterlist
Recap: Fun went on the solo mission to a BLI outpost four days ago, and with a report of a dusted Killjoy in the desert, you had to face the fact that Fun would not come back to you.
Sand was scratching in Fun’s shoes, against his neck, even in his mouth, between his teeth. Hell, he had sand in places on his body where he really did not want to have to even think about how it got there! But now the Diner was almost in sight, just one more hill. There were probably blisters on his feet, as big as his hand, and his jacket and shirt were more a net now than pieces of clothing, from where he had been caught in acid rain. His skin was mostly unharmed, which was close to a miracle. He had a few sun burns, and his back had taken a few burns from the acid, but that was it.
His hands were cramped around a folder with papers, maps, which he had risked his life for. He kept them pressed to his chest, his fingers wrapped around them so tightly that he felt like they might break from the strain on them. But he was alive, and he had made it back home. That was all that mattered. He just hoped Party and Jet had not yet done the stupid thing, and headed to Battery City blindly, without a proper plan.
As he reached the top of the hill, he could make out the Diner in the distance. Inside, lamps were still turned on, reaching beams of light out into the desert like a rope to hold onto, urging him to move faster, faster. The Diner was an oasis of light in the desert, of life. It almost seemed to call to him, pulled him in like a magnet. The Diner was the safe space, the finish line. Once he had made it there, he was in safety. He would be back with you. He needed to get back to you. Only the Phoenix Witch knew what you had to think, after he had been gone for days.
He all but stumbled the last meters to the door, pushing it open with both hands. Immediately shouts filled the room, and he caught sight of his two friends, Jet and Party, both reaching for ray guns at their side.
To say they were overjoyed to see him was an understatement. The hugged him until he thought he would suffocate. Party tucked his head under Fun’s chin refusing to let him go for almost three minutes straight, and Jet ruffled his long, dirty, dishevelled hair over and over again. They brought him two cans of PowerPup, and enough water to make up for all the days in which he had barely eaten or drunken anything. Fun had not been able to imagine he would ever think this, but right now even the disgusting PowerPup tasted like heaven. He had run out of food yesterday morning, water yesterday night. When Party and Jet found out he had managed to secure some of the maps that could help them, they immediately launched into planning a new route into the city.
Fun only listened half-heartedly, instead wondering where the hell you were. You had been all he had thought about these past days as he had wandered through the desert. How he had treated you, how his jealousy had eaten away at him, badly enough to hurt you so terribly. You deserved better than that. Better than him. He should never have gotten his hopes up that one day you might choose him over Party. If he hadn’t, it wouldn’t have hurt so badly the day he had found you sitting in Party’s lap, right after Jet and he had risked their lives to bring him back to you.
But the past weeks had raised doubts in him, faint, but definite doubts. You had not at all been as close to Party as Fun had expected you to be. Every time he had left his room, he had mentally prepared himself to stumble in on the two of you making out unashamedly, but you were not even holding hands with Party, or hugged him. This had irritated Fun all the more, had made everything so much worse because while his rational side told him to forget about his feelings for you, while his heart began hoping he still, after everything, might have a chance, even if you hated him right now.
Soon after, Fun excused himself from the table where his friends were enthusiastically planning how to free Kobra from BLI, and went to shower; dead-set on searching you out the moment he was clean enough to not scare you away immediately. It was truly impressive, how much sand had stuck to him, and after washing his hair for the third time, he finally felt like he was human again. He watched the grains being washed down the drain, watched as dust being rinsed off by water revealed the dark inks that covered his skin. His eyes fixed in on a small star he had tattooed on himself not long after having met you in the desert.
Honestly, it was a terrible idea to do tattoos out here, but he had been unable to resist the urge. It was a simple design, a star with four spikes, the bottom one longer than the other three. Whoever would look at the star would see nothing but that, a star. But to him it was so much more than that. It was the star he had watched as he had laid on his back in the freezing desert night, breathing heavily from where a complete stranger had ushered him into her hide out between some old rocks, helping him escape a patrol of DRACs that had hunted him. The stranger had had the most beautiful eyes, the softest voice, the greatest compassion, and immediately captured his heart. And when the DRAC patrol had been gone, he had asked her – had asked you – to join the crew he was running with.
Grabbing a striped shirt and a comfortable pair of shorts form the clean laundry, he finally felt the tiredness overwhelm him. He had barely slept while out in the Zones, all by himself, always half-awake in fear of a patrol spotting him. Now that he was back in safety, with a full stomach and clean, all he wanted was to find you, wrap you in his arms, and fall asleep like that. Would you let him? You had been so mad at him the last time he had spoken to you, he couldn’t expect things to just go back to the way they had been before.
Tiredly he made his way back to the front of the Diner, where Party and Jet were still brooding over the new maps.
“I’ma go to bed,” Fun mumbled, barely managing to supress a yawn, making his friends look up at him.
“Of course,” Jet nodded, shooting him a smile. “You deserve it, man. Good night.”
“Maybe check up on (y/n) first though,” Party added. “She was really fucking devastated when she thought you hadn’t made it.”
Fun nodded and headed back to the corridor. His hand was already on the handle of your door, when Party added: “She’s in your room!”
Furrowing his brows, wondering why you would be in his room and not your own or Party’s, Fun turned around, and instead carefully opened the door to his room. A thin sliver of light fell into the darkness, just enough for him to spot you lying on his bed.
You were curled in on yourself, your face buried in a piece of fabric, which Fun could have sworn was one of his hoodies. And even better: you wore one of his old band shirts.
Had the circumstances been different, had you not lived in a post-apocalyptic world where an evil company was trying to control all the humans, had you and Fun actually gotten to live normal lives… only Destroya knew what kind of thoughts would have shot through Fun’s mind in that moment at the sight of you in his shirt.
But you did live in this post-apocalyptic world. And so Fun’s heart tucked painfully in his chest. You had thought he had died, again, and instead of going to Party for comfort you had come to his room. Fun knew that if something were to happen to you, he definitely would go to your room, put on your clothes and engulf himself in things that reminded him of you. So if you did it when you thought he was dead… was there a chance you were not interested in Party after all? Was there still a chance that maybe, maybe, maybe, if he was really lucky, you felt at least a little bit about him as he felt about you?
Closing the door behind him, Fun shuffled through the dark. All he wanted was to lie down next to you, but you probably would not appreciate suddenly waking up next to someone without knowing they had joined you.
Crouching down next to the bed, he placed his hand on your shoulder, and gently shook you. That you had slept through all of Jet’s and Party’s cheering when he had first stepped back into the Diner was proof of how exhausted you had to be.
At his gentle shaking you woke up with a jolt, blinking irritated into the darkness, and then flinched again, when you saw someone sitting beside you.
“Fun,” you asked incredulously, your voice sleepy.
“Hey there,” he smiled, reaching to brush his fingers over your cheek. It was warm from sleep and so smooth under his calloused fingertips.
“This is the first good dream I’ve had in a whole fucking while,” you mumbled, dropping your head back onto the pillow, continuing to stare at him with sleep-heavy eyes.
“’s no dream, baby,” he chuckled, hoping you did not mind the pet name all too much that slipped over his lips before he could stop himself.
“I wish.”
“I promise. Come on, scoot.”
You did as he asked; your movements uncoordinated, making Fun wonder how awake you really were, and whether you would even remember this when you woke up. You had scooted far enough for him to pull the blanket out from underneath you, and after he had crawled into bed, he threw the blanket over both of you.
Before his head even hit the pillow, you had already wrapped your arms around him and cuddled into his side. The sigh that escaped him at your familiar touch, the safety of your embrace, and the softness of your body against his, forced a blush to his cheeks, but in the darkness you probably stayed unaware of it.
“I thought you had died,” you whispered, adjusting so your face was basically buried against his chest. Through the shirt Fun could feel the warm air of each of your exhales.
“So did I, a couple of times,” he confessed, finally finding a good position to wrap his arms around you. Under the blanket he tangled one of his ankles with yours. The bare skin of your legs was incredibly soft against his, making him blush harder.
“But you’re back.”
“Always gonna find a way back to you,” he whispered, and turned his head to press a short kiss to the crown of your head. You smelled better than he remembered, and he could feel his muscles relax at the familiarity. It was paradox really, that he was the one who kept you wrapped in his arms and still felt as if you were the one protecting him.
“Are you gonna stay now?”
Fun nodded in the dark. “As long as you want me to,” he answered, smiling when he felt your arms tighten around him.
“Forever then.”
“Forever then.”
“No, I mean this. Forever.”
He smiled to himself, and buried his nose against your hair. “So do I,” he assured you. “Forever.”
“Fun?” Your voice was heavy with sleep when you continued after a short moment of silence. “There’s something we need to talk about.”
“We’ll talk about it tomorrow, alright?” Fun tried to ignore the suddenly anxious hammering of his heart. What did you want to talk to him about all of a sudden? The fight you’d had? How awfully he had treated you in the weeks before that? Right after you had told him you never wanted him to leave?
“But there’s something I want to tell you.” Your voice was pouty, as pouty as it could be between your by sleep slurred words.
“Tell me tomorrow,” Fun answered.
He waited for a reply, for a sign you had understood, but through the silence he could only hear your even breaths. You had fallen asleep again.
Fun smiled to himself as he listened to the little sounds you made, as he felt your breath against his chest and deeply inhaled your familiar scent. Why could you not always fall asleep like that? The answer, he knew that, was simple really. Because he was a jealous idiot, who had thought you would care more about Party than him. But that he had found you in his room, wearing his shirt, and the way you had latched onto him immediately hinted at a different reality. Why had he been too blind to see this any earlier? Why had he been too scared to admit this to himself any earlier?
But better late than never, right? And better to live the moment than to worry about the past. Or the future for that matter, because the future looked even worse. Right now he had you though, you cuddled into him, he safe in your arms. This was all that mattered, so he would hold onto this for as long as he could.
~*~
When you woke up, you felt soft warmth all around you. For the first time in days, weeks even, you woke up and felt warm, not freezing cold. You did not have to open your eyes to know the person radiating this warmth, the person whose chest you were resting your head on, the person whose arms were wrapped so tightly around you, was Fun.
You had fallen asleep thinking he had died, and vaguely you remembered him coming into his room, talking to you, but the details escaped your memory. For weeks, ever since Party had come back, you had wished to wake up like this again, side by side with Fun, peaceful, intimate even. Now that you did, your heart was beating so hard you thought it might break your ribs.
For a long time you did not move, did not even open your eyes. The world could pass you by, you thought, and you would not care.
Well, that was not entirely true, you guessed. Yesterday the idea of going to save Kobra had felt useless. What good would it do? But now, now that Fun was back with you, you were almost itching to get going, to make plans. Even if he had retrieved no information at all, you felt a lot more confident your plan, whatever it would be, would succeed and you would all make it out of Battery City in one piece.
Judging by the orange light that shimmered through your eyelids, you assumed the sun had risen a while ago, when suddenly Fun began to massage small patterns into your waist with the hand he had placed there.
Opening your eyes, you tilted your head up, finding Fun was already looking at you so softly that you could not help but hold your breath.
For a long time you just watched each other. Stubble had had grown on his chin and jaw, and with his long, dishevelled hair he looked so cuddly. His lips twitched again and again, as if he wanted to say something, but ended up just smiling a little bit more each time.
“I’ve missed this,” he suddenly whispered, breaking the silence, his arms slightly tightening around you to emphasise the hug. And after short hesitation he added: “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you, too,” you answered without missing a beat, your heart stuttering in your chest as you realised Fun’s eyes were fixed on your lips. Unable to repress it, your own eyes flickered to his, wondering what he would do if you kissed him right now. Was he thinking the same? What would he answer if you asked him?
The questions racing around in your head got disturbed by a loud knock on the door that startled both Fun and you.
“Get dressed,” Jet shouted from behind the closed door. “Party remembered more stuff!”
“We are dressed,” Fun shouted back, almost making you laugh with how unhappy he sounded about it.
Quickly you untangled yourself from him, letting him climb out of the bed, before you followed him out into the Diner.
Jet stood next to a table that was filled with countless sheets of paper and maps. Getting closer you began making out the shapes Party had scribbled on the white sheets with pens and sharpie. They all looked like quick sketches of seemingly endless corridors, long hallways with doors going left and right. There were pictures of rooms, too, some almost looking like community showers, others clearly laboratories, holding and interview rooms. You did not dare take a closer look of a sketch of something that looked like a tiled room with a chair and a drain in the middle of the floor.
It took you a moment to notice the small letters and numbers that were scribbled into the corners of each sheet of his drawings, but when you did, you realised that they all corresponded with rooms and corridors on the maps that were spread out on the floor. You had never seen these maps, but you did not have to ask to know that those where the maps Fun had brought back from his mission. How he had kept them safe through the acid rain, was a mystery to you. Actually, now thinking about it, you still did not know how he had made it back to the Diner after four days. At some point you would have to ask him about it, but now other things were more important.
“Jet and I stayed up yesterday to look at these maps,” Party explained gesturing to the floor. He was pale, dark circles under his eyes, but seemed calmer than you had seen him in weeks. “I don’t know what it was, but it must’ve triggered some shit, because I could suddenly remember all these hallways and rooms...”
He trailed of, looking at the sketches on the table.
“They kept Kobra here,” he continued, pointing to one of the holding rooms. “Last I know of, at least.”
“Then that’s where we’ll be going first,” you decided.
“And if we don’t find him there, we’ll go to this room here,” Fun added, pointing to a small room on the map.
“What’s there,” you asked, looking at the black haired killjoy curiously.
“A unit of the command centre,” Jet answered for Fun.
“They coordinate the movements of the DRACs from there. Chances are, we’ll find out where Kobra is if we go there,” Party continued.
“But you said he wasn’t wearing a mask anymore, when you saw him last. Wouldn’t that mean another office is responsible for him?”
“Gotta start somewhere,” Party admitted through gritted teeth. You could not argue with that. “And if we’re lucky we can get access to the general computer system from there.”
“So if we first want to go here, and then there,” Jet pointed to the map, “It’s best we go along here…” he drew a line along the corridors with his finger. “But we should avoid taking the elevators.”
“How do we get in,” Fun asked.
“I think it’s pretty obvious that storming in like last time might not promise the highest chances of success,” Party mumbled sarcastically, making you all chuckled humourlessly. “You suggested the sewer system, didn’t you?”
His eyes snapped to you, making you nod.
“If we have some information on-”
Wordlessly Fun pulled a map out from underneath the sketches. It was bigger than the one on the floor, and in colour. Red, blue and green lines, crossing over one another like a gigantic knot of yarn, spread over the paper.
“As requested,” he winked at you.
“Is that-”
“A map of the entire sewer system of Battery City, yes it is,” Fun grinned proudly, spreading the map out over the table with the sketches.
It did not take you long to find which canals lead to the BLI headquarters, but then the task of finding the most convenient entrance to the canals began, and even worse: the planning of the route from the entrance to the headquarters. Trying to follow the thin, colourful lines on the paper made you feel like when you had been a kid, playing one of these maze games of ‘help the mouse find a way to the cheese in the middle of the maze’. It took you literally hours to finally find a route, which you all considered appropriate for your endeavour. The problem was not just getting in, but getting out as well. Neither of you had the faintest clue in what state Kobra would be once you found him, and you had to assume he was too weak to walk by himself, or even crawl. Therefore you had to choose the widest sewers, and the route with the least ladders.
Party also suggested that you should bring some of the old DRAC uniforms you had collected over the years, and dismantle some of the masks, so you could sneak into BLI dressed as DRACs. This way your presence would hopefully be hidden longer.
By the time the initial planning was finished, your head hurt, and you felt exhausted. It had quickly been decided that you should be the one to dismantle the old DRAC masks. Technically they should be safe even now, with their electronics having been destroyed the moment they had been removed from their original victims, but you all agreed it would be safer to take out the electronics completely. None of you felt extremely excited at the idea of getting their brain accidently fried by a faulty DRAC Mask.
Fun had offered his assistance to you, while Jet and Party had begun collecting tools and weapons you might need for the mission.
As you sat on a corner table, the masks turned with their insides out, slowly cutting and pulling out cable after cable, circuit after circuit, you could not help but wonder how Fun had made it back to you.
You had just finished with the first mask of four, Fun watching closely what you were doing so he could do it himself, when you eventually decided to ask. You could tell he was looking at you, as he mulled over the answer in his head, biting his lip, but you did not dare looking up, focusing on the second mask instead.
“The way in was easy,” Fun eventually answered. “I found the maps almost immediately. I was already outside, when a SCARECROW-Unit spotted me.”
A shiver ran down your spine. DRACs were bad enough, but SCARECROWs were worse. DRACs worked automatically, controlled from a computer system at BLI, but SCARECROWs were just humans with a mask on, fully aware of every cruel action. And they had fun torturing, hunting, killing…
“I… to be honest I don’t know how I got out. They shot my bike, and I just ran. Clung to the maps I’ve stolen and ran. They chased me for… I think for two days at least. Until the acid rain came.”
“How did you survive that anyway,” you asked, cutting another cable, still not looking up at Fun.
“I’ve been tracking along the hilltops. Harder for the SCARECROWs to follow me there with their bikes. And when the rain started I had just passed a cave. So I went back, hid out there for almost a whole day.”
You nodded, carefully pulling a cable from the mask.
“Jet said there was a transmission by Doctor D about a ‘joy who got killed by a patrol of DRACs…”
“I know. He told me,” Fun nodded.
“We thought it’d been you.”
For a moment Fun did not answer. You knew he was staring at you, maybe wondering what that Killjoys had gone through.
“Well… wasn’t me. ‘m sorry for the poor guy, but wasn’t me.”
You nodded, trying to get the shaking in your hands under control. How many more times would you think one of your friends had died? How many more times would you have to go through that horror again and again?
The warm touch of Fun’s fingertips against the back of your hand made you flinch. His hands were dry and rough, no wonder after having spent four days in the desert. Carefully he intertwined his tattooed fingers with yours. You kept your eyes fixed on where he brushed his thumb against your skin.
“A couple of times I wasn’t sure I would make it,” he confessed, his voice quiet, as if he didn’t want the others to hear what he was saying. “I knew food and water was running out, radiation beginning to make me dizzy. There were times when all I wanted to do was lay down and give up.”
You swallowed hard, trying not to imagine him like that. Blinking rapidly you tried shooing away the imagines of Fun dragging himself through the desert underneath the burning sun.
“A few times my legs gave out, and I thought I’d just stay down. Wait for BLI to find me or the sun to fry me alive, whatever would happen first.”
You clenched your jaw, keeping your eyes focused on Fun’s hands, tracing his many tattoos with your eyes.
“You know what kept me going,” he asked.
Unable to answer, you quietly shook your head. You did not want to imagine what would have happened if he had not kept going. You did not want to imagine what his hands would look like now, if he hadn’t. Truth be told, you rather liked the view of your fingers intertwined with his.
“You,” he answered his own question. “The thought that I had to get back to you. No matter what. To apologize. To talk to you. Just to see you again. Just once. That was all I could think about. That I couldn’t let you cry over me again. I know I failed with that but- I just had to see you again. Hold you again. That was the only thing that kept me going.”
The beating of your heart was so loud in your ears that it drowned out everything but Fun’s voice. What did that mean, that the thought of you had been what had kept him going? Did it mean anything at all?
“Yesterday night...” Fun’s voice was still quiet, still secretive, still keeping his words from the others. “You said there was something you wanted to talk to me about.”
Finally you looked up at him. You could feel your mouth going dry, remembering how you had almost told him how you felt for him. Was there a chance he had already guessed it? What was there to lose if you finally told him the truth? Didn’t you owe him the truth after what he had just confessed himself? Because it was a confession. The more you thought about his words the more you realised that it was a confession. Perhaps not a love confession. But maybe the closest you would ever get to one. And after all these years, years spent together, years spent apart, weeks of sharing a bed, weeks of not talking to one another – he deserved the truth.
“It’s just...” you took a deep breath. The intensity in Fun’s eyes made you dizzy. “I guess, I just wanted to tell you that I-”
The sound of a motor in the distance made you shut up. For a moment Fun and you stared at each other alarmed, before your heads both snapped towards the window. Party and Jet, too, stopped their work, listening intently. From the sound of it, it was a car, a big car, quickly approaching the Diner.
They had found you, you thought. Finally, after all these years BLI had really found you. It was over now.
Fun already jumped up, clearly searching for his ray gun, when suddenly, much to your surprise Party clapped his hands triumphantly.
“Reinforcements, finally,” he grinned, before he strode out of the Diner without a care in the world.
Sharing confused glances Jet, Fun and you followed him, just in time to see a huge, old pick-up truck race down the hill, heading straight for the Diner. It took you a moment, in the dust and over the distance, to make out the vehicle, but the closer it got the more you were certain you knew it. It was rusty and old, once blue colour faded in the sun’s radiation, with wheels specifically made for driving off road in the desert.
With screeching breaks, in a cloud of dust, the pick-up halted right in front of the Diner, making you all blink, trying to spy who had come to join you. Only Party seemed confident and happy about this development.
Your heart was racing, as you waited for the new company to reveal themselves, not even noticing that Fun hat taken a protective step in front of you.
Suddenly the driver’s door jumped open, making you flinch, and out of the car hopped a man with short, dark hair. He was not very tall, around Fun’s height at the most, and his grin was wide, his black eyes sparkling excitedly.
“You called, we came,” he told Party, striding over to him confidently. “Honestly we didn’t think we’d ever see you again.”
Party met the man halfway, hugging him briefly.
“Neither did we,” he confessed. “Good to see you, Sandman.”
Behind Sandman, two other men had climbed out of the car. One had brown, curly hair, which was long enough to stand into all directions, and piercing blue eyes. He was followed by a man with short dark hair and a neatly trimmed beard, colourful tattoos covering every inch of his skin, save for his face, shown off by wearing only a tank top and shorts, unusually light clothing in the Zones.
“Novocaine, Phoenix,” you breathed, stepping out from behind Fun, and running over to the two, who hugged you tightly. “I thought you guys were in old-Chicago.”
“Not much left there, if we’re being honest.”
The voice belonged to a fourth man, who had climbed out of the passenger side, and made his way over to you. His strawberry blond hair reached almost down to his shoulders, a bleached out trucker cap on his head keeping it from falling into his face.
Soul Punk had always been your best friend outside of your crew, and while Sandman had been closest to Kobra, Soul had been the one who had taken care of you for the first months after the others had died. Together with his crew, the Youngbloods, he had helped you trade with other Killjoys, who otherwise would have been too scared of you to even come near you.
The Youngbloods had offered you to join them multiple times, but you had always refused. It would not have felt right. And then they had gone East, back to their old hometown, Chicago, where BLI had another huge base.
“What are you doing here,” you asked in disbelieve, wrapping your arms around Soul, and hugging him tightly, unaware of the furrowed brows from underneath which Fun watched you.
“I sent out a message,” Party explained, prompting you to let go of Soul, and turn to him. “A few days ago already. If we want to make it into Bat City and back out, we need help.”
“So we’re here to help,” Sandman added. “Can’t just let Kobra rot with BLI, can we? Not after all you guys did for us.”
It was true, you guessed. The Youngbloods and the Fabulous Killjoys had been friends even before you had joined your crew. It seemed like one day Kobra had spotted the Youngbloods in a tight spot with BLI and had somehow saved them singlehandedly; a debt Sandman had always insisted was not yet paid.
“I suppose you already have a plan,” Novocaine asked, looking into the round expectantly.
“Oh trust us, we do,” Party grinned.
He seemed to know more then than you, because at this point you had no idea how to fit the other Killjoys into the carefully crafted plan you had made so far. Not to mention that smuggling eight Killjoys into the heart of BLI seemed a bit too much of a risk.
Indeed Party had kept a part of his plan to himself, in case the Youngbloods wouldn't turn up in time, as he admitted. They were your back-up, so to speak. Should you take too long in the headquarters, the chance of getting found out would be too big. So they would act as a distraction. Phoenix and Novocain would smuggle into the weapons depot of BLI, and cause some havoc there, while Soul and Sandman were to activate some undercover Killjoys within Battery City to imitate a revolt.
“What kind of havoc did you have in mind,” you asked Phoenix, curious to learn more about their plan for the weapons depot.
“Oh you know,” he shrugged. Phoenix was probably the quietest out of the group, but now his eyes were shining mischievously. “Just a bit of boom.”
“A bit of boom,” Fun echoed doubtfully.
“A bit of big boom.” Phoenix grinned proudly.
“A bit of big boom, you heard it guys,” Novocain agreed, but both refused to share more details.
The planning continued long into the evening hours, the Youngbloods curiously studying the maps Fun had stolen, impressed by the work you had already put into the plan. It was agreed that you needed to move as soon as possible, and since nobody knew how the plan could be improved any further, you decided on leaving in the morning, as soon as the sun had risen.
Over dinner, shared cans of PowerPup, the Youngbloods told you more about their time outside the Zones, explaining how old-Chicago had turned into an impenetrable fortress of BLI.
“But Old-Chicago is just that, a fortress,” Novocain explained. “Keeping their citizens in, and strangers out. Old-New-Jersey, that’s where the devil lives.”
You glanced over at Fun, knowing he had once lived in what had been New Jersey.
“What do you mean by that,” you asked.
“It’s no city,” Soul jumped in. “It’s… like an industrial site. The whole state. Covered in factories and laboratories.”
“What do they manufacture?”
“Don’t know,” Sandman answered. “Nothing good, that’s for sure.”
“We’re headed there,” Novocaine added. “After Battery City. There are two crews there, who requested help.”
“Any chance we know them,” Jet asked curiously.
“Man, I don’t know,” Sandman shrugged. “The Kids are a duo from former Columbia, and the Lost Boys from Salt Lake City.”
“Any chance Blue Shadow’s one of them,” you asked, remembering a Killjoy with bright blue hair you had met long before the Fabulous Killjoys. You still could hear the tremble in his voice when he had told you about the purge of Salt Lake City.
“That’s him,” Sandman nodded. “He’s running with Mr. Sinister now.”
“You know him,” the question came from Fun.
“Met him ages ago,” you nodded. “We spent a few weeks on the run together. Didn’t really work out as a duo. Don’t know that other guy though.”
“He’s decent,” Soul nodded. “They all are, really. They’re teaming up, looking for a few more Killjoys to get a good team together, to get behind what the hell BLI is doing at the east coast.”
“Care to join us once we’re back from Bat City?”
Quickly you exchanged looks with your friends. Generally neither of you would have a problem with it. You all could tell that the Zones were no place for you anymore. BLI was too close on your heels, with their routes running almost directly next to the Diner, with almost getting their hands on Fun. But Kobra was more important. And depending on what he would vote for, you could still make a decision later.
“Let’s get Kobra back first,” Party spoke for the rest of you. “We can’t make a decision for the crew without everyone being in on it.”
The Youngbloods nodded in understanding.
Not much later everyone began growing tired. Just as the others were about to get up, you finally found the courage to address a concern that had plagued you the whole time.
“One more thing about tomorrow,” you said, making everyone look at you expectantly. “We leave no one behind. No one. Otherwise it’s useless. No self-sacrifices.” You glanced at Fun. “No playing the hero. We’re staying together as a group. We get in, get Kobra, get out. Everyone has to make it this time.”
You could feel everyone’s eyes on you, how they were considering your words.
“Alright,” Party agreed. “I can get behind that.”
The Youngbloods nodded, not sure if you had meant to include them.
“We’ll make it all back out,” Jet assured you.
“Together,” Fun placed a comforting hand on your shoulder.
Swallowing thickly you nodded.
“Good.”

When you go so far off the rails writing Ace Attorney roleplay with your boyfriend that it begins to include things such as:
- Evil, abusive Phoenix Wright planning a terrorist bombing to kill his co-lawyers in revenge for a perceived lack of control (in this timeline, he hates Apollo since he reported Phoenix for clearly selecting a biased party with the AJAA jury among other crimes)
- Blackquill, who of course is dating the real Fullbright, going on a revenge mission to murder Phoenix Wright. Both parties disappear for three years.
- A convergence of the GAA characters into the plot. This is revealed to be part of the machinations of an organization named True Justice and their primary leader, Just Authority, a robotic insane murderer with the power to meld timelines together due to something something science experiments.
- Trucy almost is killed by a drunk Valant Gramarye, who Just Authority convinces to kill for the sake of getting famous.
There are no longer any wheels on this bus but we're still somehow picking up speed. God help me.

Going to sob, okay so Murphy is throwing a party in my hometown this weekend and offered to come pick me up from my college town like an hour away that way I could come to his party, thinking he'd be picking up me and Phoenix because Phoenix and Murphy are best friends and Phoenix is also invited to said party and goes to school with me
Only, Phoenix was planning on taking the bus earlier that day back to our hometown and not getting a ride from Murphy, but Murphy doesn't like driving alone and also didn't want to have to drive on the way back, so he ends up getting his (Murphy's) boyfriend and Phoenix to come ride with him to come get me and I'm??
Phoenix woke up in [College Town] this morning, took the bus to [Hometown] drove back down third wheeling with Murphy and his boyfriend to [College Town] just to come pick me up and drive back to [Hometown] AGAIN that's literally like three plus hours of driving between the two cities in a single day what if I cried

wild dream I had
Last night I had a dream I switched majors to law because Ace Attorney inspired me. I decided to be a defense attorney because I personally want to defend the wrongly accused. So I showed up for law school except it was filled with 8-year-olds and I wasn’t allowed to curse. Also all we did was watch SpongeBob. And everywhere was designed like a courtroom. Even the bathroom was some sort of courtroom. There was even a “combat courtroom” where violence was allowed. Anyway, I ended up being forced into marriage with this guy I haven’t seen before. And everyone had a party and was given SpongeBob party favors. I hid in the bathroom which was designed like a courtroom. And I rode the school bus home, which was actually more like a wagon. The kids on the wagon were role-playing Phoenix and Edgeworth and saying “OBJECTION” before saying anything regardless of context. All while I was thinking in my head, “They don’t know Phoenix and Edgeworth are in love, your honor”
