Ever wondered how to grow fresh parsley right in the comfort of your own home? 🌿🏠 Today, we're here to share some tips on cultivating this flavorful and versatile herb.
Step 1: Choose a sunny spot. Parsley loves the sun, so find a spot near a window or on your balcony that receives ample sunlight throughout the day.
Step 2: Prep the soil. Use a well-draining pot or container with nutrient-rich soil. Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
Step 3: Sow the seeds. Sprinkle the parsley seeds evenly across the soil's surface, then cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil. Gently water the seeds to keep the soil moist.
Step 4: Provide consistent care. Water your parsley regularly, keeping the soil moist but not overly saturated. Remember to give it some love and attention!
Step 5: Harvest and enjoy. Once your parsley has grown to a desirable size, harvest the leaves by snipping them off at the base. Use them to add freshness and flavor to your culinary creations.
There you have it, a simple guide to growing parsley at home! 🌿🌱 Start your own little herb garden and enjoy the convenience of having this aromatic herb within arm's reach whenever you need it.

“Say ‘Cheeeeese!’” ⁣ Ready for its closeup, the caterpillar’s markings really do personify it. From the black eye spots on either side of its face, which actually hold its 6 tiny eyes, the spot that looks like a nose, to the upper lip (Clypeus) that looks like rows of teeth. Also clearly visible, and looking like some serious 5 o’clock shadow, are the setae (hairs) - Caterpillars sense touch using these bristly hairs, that are all over their body. ⁣ #backyardwildlife #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #macrophotography #canon5dmarkii #canon #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom #ipreview via @preview.app (at Springfield, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC7CFwSphkj/?igshid=cdtveysq112x

This photo gives us a better look at a spiracle (the holes that it breathes through) and the insect’s small, simple eyes (also called Ocelli), that can detect changes in light intensity, but cannot form an image. Their eyes are much different in caterpillar form than when they’re butterflies. #backyardwildlife #macrophotography #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCzovV2Jlp5/?igshid=kbgu6xlivmzb

Before it even emerges from its egg, the very first thing a caterpillar does is eat. It chews its way out of its egg, and then it typically eats the rest of the eggshell. After that, it starts devouring the plant it's standing on. The caterpillar eats until it's literally too big for its body, and then it molts, shedding its too-tight skin, typically eating it afterward, revealing a newer, roomier skin. Eating their molted skin gives the caterpillar a little extra nourishment and also gets rid of evidence that could attract predators. ⁣ And that’s what they’re made to do; eat, poop, and molt. A caterpillar's body is adapted for eating food, turning it into fuel and storing it, to power their metamorphosis. #backyardwildlife #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCxHottJJvZ/?igshid=1svyrnlnah059

Have you ever wondered how caterpillars and butterflies breathe? I’ve never really thought about it, to be honest, but now that I know I find it very interesting. It’s the same for other insects. ⁣ Caterpillar’s don’t have lungs, or a respiratory system, like we do. ⁣ Can you see the shiny black spots along the side of the abdominal segments, above the first orange spot? (Scroll to see one magnified) Those are tiny openings along the sides of their bodies, called Spiracles, that open, using abdominal muscles, when oxygen is needed. Some spiracles are dedicated to taking in oxygen, while others are used to expel carbon dioxide and each spiracle has a trachea that carries oxygen into the caterpillar’s body. . . . . #backyardwildlife #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #macrophotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom #ipreview via @preview.app (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCqoUY9pxkk/?igshid=1ipnwurh4no55

Like all insects, caterpillars have 3 main body parts: a head, a thorax and an abdomen. Another distinguishing factor of an insect is 6 hinged legs. Although it may look like there are additional legs along the abdomen, the Eastern Black Swallowtail Caterpillar’s six legs are the skinnier extremities attached to the thorax, that look more like claws. The additional appendages along the abdomen are called “prolegs” and they support and move the length of the caterpillar's abdomen, with the help of small, hook-like suction cups, called crochets, on the end of each one. Since prolegs don't have segments or joints, they're not considered real legs. ⁣ #backyardwildlife #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #macrophotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCkE3XppYim/?igshid=1jhl3osn7s8g0

Can YOU balance a raindrop on your head? That’s pretty impressive! You can see the caterpillar’s world in the aquatic sphere; a world of parsley and basil. ⁣ #caterpillarchronicles #macrophotography #canon5dmarkii #backyardwildlife #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #mynewengland #newenglandigers #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCef0LNp9To/?igshid=1s5nwps07949h

1. Covered in raindrops, after a thunderstorm. ⁣ 2. Can you see the aphid that seems to be drinking from the raindrop on the caterpillar? I wonder if that would be considered a form of symbiosis. “Commensalism” is a one-sided symbiotic relationship where one of the organisms benefits while the other is not helped, nor harmed. That sounds fitting to me. ⁣ Maybe the @bravewilderness team would know! @mario_aldecoa @realmarkvins @coyotepeterson #askabiologist #macrophotography #backyardwildlife #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCbrJoRJlkS/?igshid=1fut9w0xsizvk

While moving some parsley leaves out of the way for a photo, I must’ve startled the caterpillar because, all of a sudden, there were what looked like inflatable orange antennae on its head. That eversible horn-like organ is actually a scent gland known as an osmeterium. Hidden under the skin, and exposed when threatened, the osmeterium is coated in foul smelling chemicals, with a fragrance that some say is close to rancid butter (I didn’t smell anything). If the sight and scent weren’t enough to scare a predator off, the caterpillar will also vomit to help repel an attacker. Luckily I didn’t seem to be that much of a threat! ⁣ Scroll left to see the osmeterium disappear. @bravewilderness should do an #askabiologist episode on these fascinating creatures! @coyotepeterson @marioaldecoa #backyardwildlife #macrophotography #easternblackswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography #propetpixdotcom  (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCY0fDjpIgq/?igshid=qoxtv6n063qv

Exactly 1 week ago my mom asked me what kind of caterpillars were on her parsley. She thought they were either a monarch or a tomato worm, if it were the latter it would have been evicted. I grabbed my macro lens and fired up the internet (In that order - photos first! I don’t want to miss an opportunity!) This will be one of few truer to size images, since macro lenses get you up close and personal with small objects, that’s what I intended to use it for. 🕵🏻‍♀️ A quick search informed me that, though often mistaken for Monarch caterpillars, this is a Northern Swallowtail Caterpillar. And they actually turn into some strikingly beautiful butterflies! For the past week I have been researching and documenting them, I forgot to mention - there are 2! I hope you’ll stick around and enjoy the (so far) week long journey I now refer to as #thecaterpillarchronicles 🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛🐛 . . . . #backyardwildlife #northernswallowtail #caterpillar #butterfly #metamorphosis #parsleyplant #animallover #animalphotographer #wildlifephotography #petphotographer #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #photographer #lifeofaphotographer #photooftheday #photographylife #propetpix #julieannbloniaszphotography (at Sixteen Acres) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCUyb0apwOA/?igshid=101ag1ck0r6ne
