This is a young plant of Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood, iron tree, ironwood) which becomes a wide-spreading, normally multi-stemmed deciduous tree or large shrub. In autumn the leaves turn yellow, red and purple falling to reveal the trunks of flaking bark and small crimson flowers on bare twigs.

A couple months ago I learned that my county was going to be giving away trees. I decided I wanted free trees so I went to the list of available ones, picked out the types that would fit well into my yard, and submitted my request before the deadline. Each person was able to pick up to three trees, and they weren’t guaranteed.

I just learned that I got approved on all three trees I wanted. Two for my backyard on the side, and one for my front yard over in the front corner. I have a class in early October to show the care and planting of the trees and I even got some help to plant them.

Can’t wait! Free trees!

These are the three I chose. Two Persian Spire parrotias and one Chinese pistache.

Parrotia flower blooming in Miocene rainforest

Description and study of the fossil flower of Parrotia zhiyani based on a well-preserved amber inclusion from the middle Miocene of Zhangpu, Southeast China using light microscope and microcomputed tomography techniques.

Based on this paper and fossil, Parrotia zhiyani was a small flower with no petals and likely produced polymer. They had a pair of prominent bracts that the flower would've bloomed from. The androecium consists of 12 stamens (pollen producing area of flower), and each stamen consists of a short, slender filament and a prominent, elongated anther (pollen). The anthers with short simple hair like outgrowths on the outer surface and a prominent connective extension at the top were opened by vertical slits. Unlike its living relatives, the new Parrotia from Zhangpu grew in a Miocene seasonal tropical rainforest.

Persian Parrotia

(Parrotia persica)

This type of tree grows to a height of 40 ft. Its leaves are 3 to 5 in and are oval-shaped. The facts about the flowers for the tree are that they lack petals and consist of only stamens. The shape of the back is smooth in texture, and the color is tan and transforms into different colors as it ages. The soil it resides in is soils that have a pH level of 6 to 6.5. The tree is used for as a means to control different species of insects that are harmful to the trees of urban habitats.

The autumn colour of Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood) provides a setting for this peacock who lives in the arboretum at Marks Hall, Essex. This spreading deciduous tree or large shrub has flaking bark and small spidery red flowers on bare twigs in the winter.

Check out the bark on this guy! What a mosaic.

I was originally going to tag this as a monotypic plant, but to my surprise I just found out about the Chinese Ironwood, P. subaequalis. It was previously put into the witch-hazel genus, Hamamelis, then in a new genus of it's own, before finally having its DNA analyzed in 1997 leading to it's placement in Parrotia.

Die aardige meneer van de koffie... die missen we allemaal. Inclusief het koekje bij de koffie. En die meneer deed nog veel meer. Organiseerde van alles, hield hangjeugd buiten, lette op en schonk een lekkere koffie. Hij wilde ook huur betalen, maar kreeg steeds geen gehoor van de beheerders van Parrotia. Zelfs een handtekeningactie - honderden handtekeningen! - mocht niet baten.

Ik kom er nu niet meer. Want de koffie in de Huiskamer: dat was een prima reden om hier even binnen te stappen voor een tijdschriftje, een krant of een praatje. Jammer hoor.
