Travelogue: Khao Yai - A Surprise Destination but Once is Enough

Throwback to my Thailand trip last year which I finally found the time to write about. The parents suggested Thailand so I just went along and decided to put Khao Yai and Hua Hin as destinations as well since I’ve never been there before. Check-in was at Terminal 2 and it has been my first time departing from this terminal since covid. Check-in was fuss-free and done quickly and we soon proceeded…

it's not like @amadouers to show up late. at least not for darius. he paces the front of the restaurant while considering the possibilities. it's a midway point for the both of them—halfway home to palmview (otherwise, he would have picked her up). the server refused to fulfill their reservation unless the entire party was there. even if was their usual party of two, it was something he was looking forward to all week. darius was quick to punch in his timestamp card and change into the spare change of clothes he packed. there's the intrusive thought that maybe he'd done something to piss her off in the four hours since they'd last spoken. but maybe she was met with some car trouble? with three minutes left on the timer and the line of people crowding the front, darius sidesteps into the parking lot and makes a call. “ hey are you okay? we can reschedule if you didn't feel like driving here. i can just come over after i pick something up for us. sound okay? ”

So in the comics, Jimmy Woo forms a close relationship with this woman named Suwan, who is the great-grand-niece of his arch-nemesis, the Yellow Claw. They initially start out as enemies but later on, Suwan falls for Jimmy and betrays Yellow Claw in several occasions. Suwan and Jimmy Woo basically have an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers relationship in the comics.

Now, if the Jimmy Woo series is ever greenlit (fingers crossed), I really, really, really want Ali Wong to play Suwan. Because she and Randall Park already played a couple that started out with them bickering. 

It’d be “Always Be My Maybe”, but with spies, superheroes, and ancient warlords who want to conquer Earth.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

April 7th - Jimmy Woo

James Woo had been an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation assigned primarily to investigate and apprehend the Chinese-national crime boss known as the Golden Claw.  The Claw controlled a vast criminal empire and Woo proved to be his greatest adversary.  Further complicating matters, the Claw's grandniece, Suwan, was in love with Woo.

In the late 1950’s Woo was given a new assignment and asked to oversee the fledgling superhero team called The Avengers (an early predecessor to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes composed of Marvel Boy, Namora. Gorilla Man, Venus and the robotic M-1.)   Later Woo was recruited by the agency SHIELD to serve on their ‘Godzilla Squad,’ assigned to hunt down the giant Kaiju known as Godzilla.

In his older age, Woo resumed his search for the Golden Claw, connecting the criminal to a multinational conglomerate called The Atlas Foundation.  Woo organized a raid of an Atlas facility which resulted in a massive explosion that killed Woo’s team and left him in critical condition.  

Marvel Boy, who was now going by the moniker of The Uranian, used his Eternal technology to heal Woo, restoring him to the age he was when they first met back in the 1950’s.  Together with the other members of the 50’s-era Avengers, Woo set out to discover the truth behind this mysterious Atlas Foundation.   Their investigation took them around the world and they ultimately located The Golden Claw who revealed that the whole ordeal had simply been a test.  The Claw had been alive for centuries and was now at his life’s end.  He wanted someone noble and shrewd to replace him as head of the organization he had created (now called The Atlas Foundation) and he believed Woo to be that man.  As such, The Claw ended his life and left Woo the sole leader of the Atlas Foundation.

Now calling themselves The Agents of Atlas, Woo and the others embarked on the challenging endeavor of transforming Atlas’ global operations from a criminal empire to promoting, peace and justice to underserved peoples.  

After many adventures alongside the Agents of Atlas, Woo founded the Pan-Asian School for the Unusually Gifted, a Mumbai-based school for Asian teenagers with superhuman abilities. Woo additionally became a member of The Protectors, a group of Pan-Asian heroes that included Amadeus Cho, Ms. Marvel, Shang-Chi, Silk and SHIELD agent Jake Oh.

During the War of The Realms event, Woo organized an extended Agents of Atlas team, made up of the original squad, mixed with the Protectors and new heroes from the Pan-Asian nations.  Since then, Woo has seated Brawn (Amadeus Cho) as the field leader of the new iteration of The Agents of Atlas.

A version of Jimmy Woo features in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where the character is portrayed by actor Randall Park.

Jimmy Woo first appeared in the pages of Yellow Claw #1 (1956).

20 August 2019: King Abdullah II, accompanied by Crown Prince Hussein, visited Ajloun Governorate, where they were briefed on the designs of the Ajloun cable car plan, signalling the start of work on the project which becomes operational in mid-2021 as part of a plan to enhance the Suwan development zone in the governorate.

The visit also included a stop at the Ajloun Business Incubator, which works with young entrepreneurs and supports small- and medium-sized enterprises. He also inaugurated the Zaha Cultural Centre-Ajloun, established to hone children’s talents and nurture their creativity, targeting ages from three to 16 years old. During the visit, His Majesty met with the president and members of Ajloun’s governorate council, as well as heads of municipalities in the governorate. Speaking at the meeting with governorate council members and mayors, His Majesty said he is proud to be among the people of Ajloun. Noting the cable car project and the other projects he visited, the King said he felt proud when he met with enthusiastic young Jordanians in the governorate. His Majesty called for capitalising on the advantages offered by Ajloun in tourism and agriculture, stressing that the governorate has great potential and all must work together towards Ajloun’s progress. The King underscored the importance of having a comprehensive plan for the governorate that identifies priorities and the role of each party in order to move forward with projects in Ajloun. Speaking at the meeting, Governorate Council President Mohammad Nour Smadi gave a briefing on Ajloun’s development plan, its projects, and its experience in decentralisation. Smadi noted that His Majesty’s visit sends a message of support to decentralisation, adding that the government should make this topic a priority and conduct field visits to governorates to ensure plans are implemented on the ground. Speaking on behalf of the heads of Ajloun Governorate’s five municipalities, Ajloun Mayor Hassan Zghoul stressed the importance of having development projects that generate revenue for municipalities, suggesting a number of investment projects. Members of the governorate council also presented their proposals for development projects in Ajloun, suggesting solutions to address some of the issues that the governorate faces. Also speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Omar Razzaz said the government will take note of the various comments and proposals presented, adding that the experience of decentralisation so far has not been up to the aspirations outlined by His Majesty. The government seeks to review the law on decentralisation to reach a more effective formula, in coordination with governorate councils, with the goal of submitting it to Parliament, Prime Minister Razzaz added. The prime minister highlighted the government’s projects and plans to enhance services in Ajloun, stressing the importance of the cable car project, which is part of a wider plan to attract investments and create jobs by bolstering Ajloun as a key tourist destination. The cable car route is planned to extend over 2,850 metres from Suwan area to Ajloun Castle, with 40 cars each accommodating eight passengers. The JD10-million cable car project is part of the first phase of a programme to enhance the Suwan development zone in Ajloun, which is expected to create nearly 50 job opportunities. The second phase entails establishing a conference centre, a five-star hotel, and a number of restaurants at a cost of JD50 million. It will be implemented in partnership with the private sector and is expected to generate nearly 700 job opportunities. For his part, Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi noted recent initiatives implemented in Ajloun upon Royal directives, such as establishing housing units, schools, youth centres, and public parks, as well as providing funding for income-generating projects. A number of new projects will also be implemented in coordination with the governorate council to address Ajloun’s development needs, Issawi added.

Idea for the potential Jimmy Woo/Darcy Lewis spin-off series (2.0)

General premise of the series:

FBI agent Jimmy Woo is assigned to a case involving the criminal organization known as the Ten Rings. Apparently, one of the organization’s cells is working in the United States and that they’re planning to kidnap high-profile, K-pop superstar Seol Hee/Luna Snow during one of her concerts. Jimmy’s mission is to ensure this doesn’t happen and to track down the kidnappers’ leader. 

What starts out as an uneventful mission quickly turns south when the Ten Rings attack the concert and take out most of Jimmy’s FBI unit. It turns out that the Ten Rings knew about the FBI presence and were ready for them. As the sole surviving member of his team, Jimmy manages to get Luna to safety and the two of them go on the road to escape the Ten Rings.

The rest of the series focuses on Jimmy and Luna trying to figure out why the Ten Rings are after her and to stop their ringleader. Along the way, they recruit Darcy Lewis and a new hero who just so happens to have a history with the Ten Rings. 

(basically...think of this as the MCU’s version of “The Bodyguard”)

Episode breakdown (only rough summaries, missing all the character development in-between):

Episode 1: Jimmy and Luna meet. They bond over shared interests. Ten Rings attacks the concert. Jimmy gets to Luna and they both go on the run. Golden Claw, the Ten Rings leader, is introduced.

Episode 2: Jimmy goes to Darcy’s house to hide from the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi arrives to the city when he hears about the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi meets with Jimmy, Darcy, and Luna. Although they don’t trust each other yet, Jimmy agrees to work with Shang-Chi.

Episode 3: Jimmy, Luna, Darcy, and Shang-Chi leave the United States for South Korea, hoping Luna will be safer at home. They’re attacked at the airport by a separate group, leading to Jimmy and Shang-Chi fighting together. The group that attacked them are revealed to be mercenaries trying to collect the bounty on Luna Snow’s head. The quartet link up with the Seoul police.

Episode 4: Revealed that Luna Snow was trying to expose her agency for having connections with the Ten Rings, which is why Golden Claw wants her dead. Darcy also learns that the Ten Rings have infiltrated the Seoul police as well, resulting in an epic fight scene. Shang-Chi is arrested for battling the corrupt police.

Episode 5: Jimmy and Darcy work with a good cop, Suwan, in order to get Shang-Chi out of custody. Despite the plan succeeding, the Ten Rings strike again and manage to kidnap Luna Snow. They hold her hostage in a Stark Industries cold fusion reactor.

Episode 6: Jimmy, Shang-Chi, and Darcy battle the Ten Rings one last time in order to rescue Luna. Luna Snow gets her cryo powers (the cold fusion reactor meltdown). With the help of Shang-Chi and Darcy, Jimmy manages to kill Golden Claw. Episode ends with Jimmy wanting to work with Shang-Chi and Luna Snow again, hinting at an Agents of Atlas movie.
