There’s something for everyone in London
Tumblr media
Visiting anywhere is tough with a family in tow. From finding the right hotel to securing tickets for the best attractions, creating an itinerary which works for everyone, and factoring in the constant need for food, naps, and drinks, London with a family can be a tough ask. Until now.
This blog is all about navigating a visit to the city with family members of all ages – sharing the best hotels in Paddington London, where you can get bed and breakfast near Paddington Station London on your way to check out the finest attractions, and which shows to make sure you see.
Where to stay
Some of the best London accommodation is near Paddington Station, combining the central location with the proximity to Regents Park and other central London green spaces for optimum peace and quiet – not to mention access to ZSL London Zoo which is popular with visitors of all ages. Whether you are an early riser or a night owl, being close to a green space gives you somewhere to see the sunrise or the sunset, with Hyde Park in particularly one of the most vibrant in terms of events and other experiences.
The Park Avenue Inn London is a family friendly hotel which offers a range of packages or choose something a little further afield in East London and make the most of access to trendy Shoreditch and Stratford.
Eating, drinking, and snacking
Finding a restaurant that ticks everyone’s tastebuds is near impossible – which is why when it comes to visiting London as a family, your best bet is to opt for one of the markets with tons of different foodie options and things to try.
Borough Market is great for day time eating, or head to one of the many outdoor food attractions such as Pop Brixton for more of a hot food experience with the ability to order from different outlets. If you want a refined meal or something truly British, then consider afternoon tea at one of the top London hotels – and make sure not to miss the local treats on offer from street vendors as you wander Covent Garden and the Southbank to name just two options.
Attractions you cannot miss
This is where planning and having an itinerary is key – with the best trips being those where you consider, and channel thought into the location of your top attractions and how to fit them together into day trips.
The West End of London is one such location which you must visit, with most of the top shows doing matinee shows on specific days as well as evening shows virtually all week. If you are planning on catching a show, then book in advance or speak to the reception staff at your hotel to arrange tickets.
The main attractions near to Paddington London include Madame Tussauds and the Planetarium, or you can head towards the river side to visit the Tower of London and the London Eye.

Silver cooper at soroptimist, and since my friend who died was English; let's go over this.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/TheLastAmericanVirgin (Janneke is in here, and that's not the point but a movie that matters)
A cooper there means
• A food pantry that's empty but for yellow stuff
• A soundtrack indicative of musical theater, in Market of Choice *right time wrong me chorus* in exact synch with my coming through the checkout, complete with *won't stop raining* *soul so in despair, woman stalker from lithia park standing behind me in yellow* *empty pleas for contact, lyrics about crying*
And phil would have had better luck with "The second flavor of this occurs in the Cowboy Bebop episode "The Real Folk Blues (Part 1)", when Vicious kills the leaders of the Red Dragon and takes over the syndicate, executing one of them by slashing him across the eyes and making him "shed tears of scarlet".
Although, his sf MO was in all probability closer to "While the team celebrates Helen Morton's promotion to DCI, Annie meets someone in a restaurant, calls Banks from an alley nearby, and she is stabbed after telling him where she is. Banks and the team begin the painful job of finding out exactly who was responsible for Annie's death."
(London kings road skinheads *love those chef's knives*, and wouldn't you know it, it's where skinheads are from) But I digress.
A soundtrack at *MoC* like that means
•Something in the vicinity of the palm inn, a sweeper with a blower blowing crap into my eyes, as I reached the span of the turn in, see crying above
•A car stalker, notable for not being one, but several short distance to mountain avenue *where a yellow honda* was waiting to turn down mountain, AND a yellow motorcycle but not before *BOTH* 211-gah AND 122668
A palm inn experience like that one forecasts,
•A soundtrack at Safeway, and boy is there, Lionel Richie "you need to forget about me" in musical theater synch as I go through with *one item* "Does the music ever make you crazy?" I ask the *Filipino* cashier who's open
(Safeway had Don't You Forget About Me the last time I was in there, I think)
Safeway like that can only mean,
•A set of people who are supposed to look like me, either in dress or nose (a broken nose of ten or more times; always the stuff you're sensitive about) Ashland library staged and ready to go combatively when I walk in the door
(A ryan as reference girl is wearing stripes but the *shelver spy* ryan got a job here, hasn't tried to crowd me, yet. "You would die" she said when I offered that this was a way (her behavior) that ryan could get killed and that was *a very long time ago*)
And yes, would ryan have gone after Janneke in highschool or whatever, he would've been the idiot at the pawn shop from that movie. Sex makes men dumb, but *only the heterosexual ones* would agree Chris Horton.
And yes, this shit is *every day*, as the food pantry downstairs was empty and "hunger is the best spice" was the top promoted Google result when I searched the Real Folk Blues quote. So ***what*** exactly *is* ms13??? Is it Chicago's CIA or something?
Afterword, a sunflower girl I *randomly* encounter around a park often (read always) contain one of the following,
•"You should steal things and then sell them" entrapment
•"You're saying you're a murderer??" implication and in response to *any reference to violence past present news future*
•"You're a robot" discredit-ish
*fat librarian flashes "heart" "honor the wild" book covers in rapid succession* how's your health, ryan?
• "I'm a wood rabbit" saloon girl reference to "being chased around a track" diminutive
• "It's a pimp" in reference to a mark on her face
(Her attempts at giving me the "Gang Leader for a Day" experience that Indian guy wrote a book about, and that I read in one sitting at the talent library years ago)
It's not getting the hell killed out of myself by a street gang, so I can complain but it doesn't mean anything until I'm dead.
•She "likes to lay in the grass", prostitution costs money that she thinks I have and that would snk attract the attention of the fbi or something, story of my life; people *only ever* interact with me because they want something.
It's going to turn out to israel or something, isn't it, ms13? Escobar was based on england's opium trade in China and was reputed to be semitic himself; hope you guys know what you're doing, Charlton Heston caused a lot of mass shootings with one NRA speech.
All those cars piss me off because an empire of atrocities has finally taken over Ashland, I guess. My late friend thought the Chinese were going to save the world.

8 Fun Facts about visiting New York
Tumblr media
If you haven’t yet been to New York, we’re here to bring some fun facts to you. Take it as a tour guide’s list of the places you must visit, while some facts will simply help you learn more about this city.
New York was not born with the name originally. It’s had a different name before, and nowadays is called by other names too. If you want to get to know about such fun facts about New York and more, keep reading to the very end
Learn these fun facts about New York
Welcome to the ‘concrete jungle, where dreams are made of – there’s nothing you can’t do’, sang Alicia Keys featured in Jay-Z’s popular song Empire State of Mind. This song had all that you could know about the city, especially the love for it. It’s true indeed when she further adds that the streets make you feel brand new, and the big lights inspire you.
When a city this small, that’s twice as small as London can make you vibe to its tunes, you’ve got to understand how amazing it must be. So, let’s begin with exploring the city through these amazing fun facts.
1.      The Dutch settlers originally called it – New Amsterdam
New York, as we mentioned, was not originally called so! Its lands were initially discovered by the Dutch Settlers, and they called it New Amsterdam until the English took over, and named the city in the Duke of York’s honor. There were some cities that were in fact Dutch origin. For instance, Wall Street was called Waal Straat, Brooklyn was called Breukelen, and Harlem was called Haarlem
2.      New York’s reference to the Big Apple
New York is nicknamed ‘The Big Apple’ because of the prizes that were awarded at horse racing events in the 1920s. The term referred to ‘the ultimate’ prize or ‘the best’, because of which several musicians and journalists started referring to New York with the name ‘The Big Apple’. This nickname was made official in 1971 as a means to boost tourism after some bad press. The city is also known as Empire City, The City that Never Sleeps, and City of Dreams.
3.      The city with the first ever Pizzeria in the USA
New York is the first city where pizza lovers were born. This Pizzeria was opened in 1905 and was certified by the Pizza Hall of Fame. It’s interesting to note that Lombardi’s Pizza on 32 Spring Street is going strong, among the 1,600 pizzerias in the city.
4.      Home to a diverse population
New York is home to people from different parts of the world. This is evident by the number of languages spoken in the city, which amount to more than 800 languages. You could say that almost half of the city speaks more than one language, whereas one-third are born overseas. This city has the largest population with a widely diverse group of citizens. One in 38 people in the USA are from New York.
5.      The birthplace of LGBTQ+ rights
One day the police walked into a bar and the rest is history, especially in New York’s Greenwich village. This place had a bar called Stonewall Inn, which was a popular and safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community way back in 1969. The police decided to raid the place, but the people in the bar fought back, instead of submitting. The event led to riots, creating a worldwide movement, making New York the friendliest place for LGBTQ+ people.
6.      The Gallery where whispers are heard loud and clear
The Grand Central Terminal is a domed walkway in New York. It has a remarkable architecture built at 42nd street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The design of this architecture does something amazing. If you stand in one corner next to a tiled wall, and whisper a few words to another person standing on the opposite side more than 30 feet away, you will be able to hear each other. It’s the most amusing acoustical phenomena that attract tourists to try it out and have fun at this whispering gallery.
7.      The promenade at Central park
New York’s elite Central Park is a place where you will find lots of birds. The park has a straight path that leads to the Bethesda Terrace. This park was originally known as the Promenade. This was once a park for the elite to take walks in their finest attire and admire each other’s wealth.
8.      The Statue of Liberty was originally born in Paris
Lady Liberty is an iconic symbol, representing the American dream, and of course, freedom. Originally built by French sculptors Bartholdi and Eiffel, the tower was built to celebrate the friendship between the US and France.

What to See in London on a One Day Tour
Tumblr media
There’s so much to see and do in London that you must maximise your visit and see as much as possible. If you’re staying in one of the hotels near Queensway, London and only have one day to dedicate to sightseeing, here are some of the top places you need to visit in order to get the most out of your stay.
1. The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben
London isn’t a city of skyscrapers and instead has one of the most unique and dynamic skylines in the UK, with one of the defining features being the Palace of Westminster, better known as the Houses of Parliament. Adjoined to this iconic building is Big Ben, the clock tower that can be found on depictions of London all around the world.
If you’re in London and want to see all the iconic landmarks in one day, make sure you start here as this is arguably the top tourist hotspot in the city and will not disappoint.
2. Buckingham Palace
Great Britain is famous for many things, but the royal family tops the list. Whilst there are palaces all around the UK that the Queen stays at, her main residence is Buckingham Palace. It’s just a short distance from the Houses of Parliament and hotels on Bayswater Road, London, making it easy to slot into your itinerary for the day.
3. St. Paul’s Cathedral
Another defining feature of the London skyline is St. Paul’s Cathedral, known for its iconic dome. It’s more than 1,400 years old and is placed atop the highest point in the City of London, Ludgate Hill. The cathedral has been witness to two world wars, many battles, and more monarchs that we can count. It’s steeped in history and is an absolute must-see to anyone visiting London for a day. It’s also exceptionally close to Park Avenue Bayswater Inn Hyde Park, meaning you can spend less time travelling and more time exploring this great Anglican cathedral.
4. The Tower of London
For bloody tales and a glimpse at the Crown Jewels, make sure you visit the Tower of London. It is a sight behold amid the modern buildings that surround it, but from 1078 onwards, this has been a royal fortress tasked with protecting London and the reigning monarch. The lively tour guides put on an excellent performance and are brimming with knowledge on the gruesome history of the castle, and you can see the world-famous ravens who have been at the tower for hundreds of years.
5. Oxford Street
For something a bit more laid back and modern, hit up Oxford Street, London’s shopping hub. There are over 300 shops for you to peruse, not to mention the multiple restaurants and pubs that also line this famous street. If you’re looking to get a souvenir or simply indulge in some retail therapy after a busy day of sightseeing, this is the place to go.
You don’t need to worry about carrying heavy bags – there is plenty of accommodation near Oxford Street which serves as the perfect home base to retreat to after your jam-packed one-day tour of London.

Today we remember the passing of Johnny Thunders who Died: April 23, 1991 at the Inn on St Peter in New Orleans, Louisiana.
John Anthony Genzale (July 15, 1952 – April 23, 1991), known professionally as Johnny Thunders, was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He came to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of the New York Dolls. He later played with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist.
Thunders was born John Anthony Genzale in Queens, New York, the second child to Josephine Genzale (née Nicoletti, 1923–1999), who was of Italian descent, and Emil Genzale (1923–1982), who was of Italian, Russian-Jewish, and German-Jewish ancestry. He had an older sister, Mariann (1946–2009). He first lived in East Elmhurst and then Jackson Heights.
His first musical performance was in the winter of 1967 with The Reign. Shortly thereafter, he played with Johnny and the Jaywalkers, under the name Johnny Volume, at Quintano's School for Young Professionals, around the corner from Carnegie Hall, on 56th Street near 7th Avenue.
In 1968, he began going to the Fillmore East and Bethesda Fountain in Central Park on weekends. His older sister, Mariann, started styling his hair like Keith Richards. In late 1969, he got a job as a sales clerk at D'Naz leather shop, on Bleecker Street in the West Village, and started trying to put a band together. He and his girlfriend, Janis Cafasso, went to see The Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden in November 1969, and they appear in the Maysles' film, Gimme Shelter.
Dolls bass guitarist Arthur "Killer" Kane later wrote about Thunders' guitar sound, as he described arriving outside the rehearsal studio where they were meeting to jam together for the first time: "I heard someone playing a guitar riff that I myself didn't know how to play. It was raunchy, nasty, rough, raw, and untamed. I thought it was truly inspired...", adding "His sound was rich and fat and beautiful, like a voice."
The New York Dolls were signed to Mercury Records, with the help of A & R man Paul Nelson. Thunders recorded two albums with the band, New York Dolls and Too Much Too Soon. They were managed by Marty Thau, and booked by Leber & Krebs. Subsequently, they worked with Malcolm McLaren for several months, later becoming a prototype for the Sex Pistols.
In 1975 Thunders and Nolan left the band, Thunders later blaming McLaren for the band's demise. Johansen and Sylvain continued playing, along with Peter Jordon, Tony Machine (an ex-assistant agent at Leber & Krebs) and Chris Robison, as the New York Dolls until late 1978.
Thunders formed The Heartbreakers with former New York Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan and former Television bassist Richard Hell. Walter Lure, former guitarist for the New York City punk band The Demons joined them soon after. After conflict arose between Thunders and Hell, Hell left to form Richard Hell and the Voidoids and was replaced by Billy Rath. With Thunders leading the band, the Heartbreakers toured America before going to Britain to join the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned on the 'Anarchy Tour'. The group stayed in the UK throughout 1977, where their popularity was significantly greater than in the U.S., particularly among punk bands. While in Britain they were signed to Track Records and released their only official studio album, L.A.M.F., an abbreviation for "Like A Mother Fucker". L.A.M.F. was received positively by critics and fans alike, but was criticised for its poor production. Displeased with the production, the band members were soon competing with one other, mixing and remixing the record, culminating in drummer Jerry Nolan quitting in November 1977. Shortly thereafter, the Heartbreakers officially disbanded.
Thunders stayed in London and recorded the first of a number of solo albums, beginning with So Alone in 1978. The notoriously drug-fuelled recording sessions featured a core band of Thunders, bassist Phil Lynott, drummer Paul Cook and guitarist Steve Jones, with guest appearances from Chrissie Hynde, Steve Marriott, Walter Lure, Billy Rath and Peter Perrett. The CD version of the album contains four bonus tracks, including the single "Dead or Alive" and a cover of the early Marc Bolan song "The Wizard". Soon afterwards, Thunders moved back to the US, joining former Heartbreakers Walter Lure, Billy Rath and sometimes Jerry Nolan for gigs at Max's Kansas City. Around this time Thunders played a small number of gigs at London's Speakeasy with a line up including Cook and Jones, Henri Paul on bass and Judy Nylon and Patti Palladin (Snatch) as back up vocalists.
In late 1979, Thunders moved to Detroit with his wife Julie and began performing in a band called Gang War. Other members included John Morgan, Ron Cooke, Philippe Marcade and former MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer. They recorded several demos and performed live several times before disbanding. Zodiac Records released an EP of their demos in 1987. In 1990 they also released an album titled Gang War, which was credited to Thunders and Kramer.
During the early 1980s, Thunders re-formed The Heartbreakers for various tours; the group recorded their final album, Live at the Lyceum, in 1984. The concert was also filmed and released as a video and later a DVD titled Dead Or Alive.
In the 1980s, Thunders lived in Paris and Stockholm with his wife and daughter. In 1985 he released Que Sera Sera, a collection of new songs with his then band The Black Cats, and "Crawfish", a duet with former Snatch vocalist Patti Palladin. Three years later he again teamed up with Palladin to release Copy Cats, a covers album. The album, produced by Palladin, featured a wide assortment of musicians to recreate the 1950s and 1960s sound of the originals, including Alex Balanescu on violin, Bob Andrews on piano, The Only Ones John Perry and others on guitar, and a horn section.
From August 1988 until his death in April 1991, Thunders performed in The Oddballs, with Jamie Heath (saxophone), Alison Gordy (vocals), Chris Musto (drums), Stevie Klasson (guitar) and Jill Wisoff (bass). From April–May 1990, Johnny performed an acoustic tour of the UK and Ireland joining up occasionally with John, Sam & Peter of The Golden Horde, whom he had met and played with previously in 1984 at the TV Club, and were concurrently on tour (of the UK & Ireland) at that time also, for full-band electric performances and TV appearances. On May 8, 1990, recording sessions in London for a joint EP-single cover version with The Golden Horde of "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies, and original material, had to be cancelled when Johnny experienced "health problems" following his performances in Wakefield, UK while on tour.
His final recording was a version of "Born To Lose", with German punk rock band Die Toten Hosen, recorded 36 hours before his death in New Orleans.
Rumors surround Thunders' death at the St. Peter House in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 23, 1991. Thunders apparently died of drug-related causes, but it has been speculated that it was the result of foul play. According to his biography Lobotomy: Surviving The Ramones, Dee Dee Ramone took a call in New York City the next day from Stevie Klasson, Johnny's rhythm guitar player. Ramone said, "They told me that Johnny had gotten mixed up with some bastards... who ripped him off for his methadone supply. They had given him LSD and then murdered him. He had gotten a pretty large supply of methadone in England, so he could travel and stay away from those creeps – the drug dealers, Thunders imitators, and losers like that."
An article in the Orlando Sentinel states that he died of an overdose of cocaine and methadone, according to the coroner's office in New Orleans. Chief investigator John Gagliano said "tests completed last week found substantial amounts of both drugs."
While other sources state: An autopsy was conducted by the New Orleans coroner, but served only to compound the mysteries. According to Thunders' biographer Nina Antonia as posted on the Jungle Records web site, the level of drugs found in his system was not fatal. According to the book Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon by Pamela Des Barres, who interviewed Thunders' sister, Mariann Bracken, the autopsy confirmed evidence of advanced leukemia, which would explain the decline in Thunders' appearance in the final year of his life. This also sheds light on the interview in Lech Kowalski's documentary Born To Lose: The Last Rock and Roll Movie, where Thunders' brother-in-law says, "Only Johnny knew how sick he really was."
In a 1994 Melody Maker interview, Thunders' manager Mick Webster described the family's efforts to get New Orleans police to investigate the matter further: "We keep asking the New Orleans police to re-investigate, but they haven't been particularly friendly. They seemed to think that this was just another junkie who had wandered into town and died. They simply weren't interested."
Thunders was survived by his wife Julie Jourden and four children: sons John, Vito, and Dino, and daughter Jamie Genzale by Susanne Blomqvist.

Harry Potter Tours Around London Fit For A Muggle
Tumblr media
Harry Potter and London go hand in hand; like salt and vinegar, or fish and chips- or Ron, Harry and Hermione. The two are synonymous, thanks to key parts of the films and books being shot on location. And due to the fact you are a Harry Potter fan (obviously, who isn't?) then you will want to keep reading to follow these tips on the best Harry Potter locations on offer in the city. If you are lucky enough to have booked some accommodation in London Paddington, then you are in a prime position to see all the magical sights the city holds. So let’s find out how you can maximise the best hotel deals Paddington London has summoned up this summer.
The Warner Bros. Studio Tour
If you haven't heard of the Warner Bros. Studio tour then you must have been suffering from the effects of the confundus charm. It is honestly one of the greatest experiences on offer anywhere in the world for movie fans. As far as film experiences go, this is really hard to beat. You will be welcomed through the grand oaken doors of Hogwarts, and ushered into the stunning Great Hall itself. From there you are free to walk around the studio where a large portion of the films were shot. Gryffindor common room and Dumbledoor’s Office are obvious highlights, and there are a few more surprises in store for you after that! The only downside is the location of the studio, it’s not exactly central. But a few train and bus rides will get you there from your hotels in Paddington, London.
Self-Guided Tours For Muggles
As previously mentioned, the city is full of film locations, so have a quick look online and find a self-guided tour to follow using the magic of technology! These tours are obviously free and only require your feet and passion for Potter! You can see things like Platform 9¾, The MInistry of Magic and the Leaky Cauldron. You can also explore the alleyways that were J.K Rowling’s inspiration for Diagon Alley!
A Real Wizarding Tour
For the real ‘Potter Heads’ out there there are always the magnitude of Guided tours on offer in London, led by magical historians and wizarding aficionados. These guided tours are jam packed with information and wondrous locations so get ready to experience the real magic of London. Another bonus of these walking tours around the city is the fact that you do actually get to see lots of London’s major attractions at the same time, two birds with one stone!
If you feel like you don’t have the energy to walk around the city, there is always the Wizards London Bus Tour, that will help you apparate around the city in no time. The Bus leaves from London St. Pancras station which is a short walk or an even shorter tube ride from the Park Avenue Inn Paddington London. The perfect location to explore the wizarding world hidden within the nation’s capital, so get cracking, and don’t forget to stop for a butterbeer!

3 Of the Top West End Musicals in London
An excursion toward the West End is one of the features of any stay in London, and its nearness makes it significantly more so when you remain in a Hyde Park inn. London is a phenomenal city with enough attractions to keep you occupied for a considerable length of time, yet on the off chance that it's sheer stimulation that you're after, then getting a world-class melodic at one of London's marvelous theaters must be perhaps the best thing you can do during your time here.
youtube
1. Les Misérables
A great many people arranging an excursion toward the West End to get a melodic will at any rate have heard this name previously, and that is on the grounds that Les Misérables is the longest-running melodic here. It's well worth getting tickets for this one when you book your Hyde Park lodging. London musicals come in all shapes and sizes, however this is a flat out great. It depends on Victor Hugo's tale about France in the nineteenth century and consolidates energy, love and catastrophe. It is playing at the Queen's Theater on Shaftsbury Avenue.
2. Underhanded
Underhanded just landed in the West End in 2006, yet it absolutely made a sprinkle! It recorded the greatest consistently opening in the West End's history. In view of the book by Gregory Maguire, it recounts to the narrative of The Wicked Witch of the West, before the occasions of The Wizard of Oz. It is presently playing at the London Apollo Victoria Theater.
3. The Lion King
At the point when the Lion King film got one of Disney's greatest ever hits in the cinematic world, it wouldn't have been long until it moved to the stage. Regardless of being founded on an animation, and having an all-creature cast, the melodic turned into a colossal hit - thanks to a limited extent to the unbelievable outfits that breath life into it, and obviously the extraordinary tunes. Any individual who has seen the film will cherish seeing the show, in actuality, settling on this one of the top decisions to look at when you remain in a Hyde Park lodging. London's Lyceum Theater on Wellington Street is the place you'll get this one.
Catch a Musical in London
London has some incredible musicals to browse, and the above determination is only a start. There are a lot more to enjoy, in this way, to investigate what's on, just bring a meander down from your Hyde Park lodging. London is an impressive amusement goal whether you are remaining here for a weekend or half a month, so ensure you utilize the chance to visit the West End during your remain.

Deer Park Tavern, 108 W Main Street in Newark, Delaware, towers above the intersection of W Main Street and London Avenue at the northwest edge of the University of Delaware campus. 10 Things to do in Notting Hill, London
Tumblr media
Notting Hill is a lively area located within the elegant borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Popularised by the 1999 rom-com of the same name, this district stands out from the rest in west London due to its vibrant and carefree spirit. There’s a lot going on in Notting Hill, so whether you’re staying in the area or further afield at one of the hotels near Paddington, make sure you reserve time on your London trip to see the top sights of Notting Hill.
Visit Portobello Road Market
Portobello Road Market is perhaps the most famous attraction in Notting Hill, and for good reason. It’s the world’s biggest antique market, with more than 1,000 stallholders and dealers selling unique collectables for a fair price.
Go to the Notting Hill Museum of Brands
Travel back in time and unlock forgotten memories at the Notting Hill Museum of Brands. This is the perfect rainy day activity as there is more than 200 years’ worth of consumer history to scour through. What’s more, it’s only a short distance from the Park Avenue Inn Craven Hotel, so you don’t need to worry about travelling too far if the weather turns.
Stroll down St. Lukes Mews
If you’ve seen the film Love Actually, you’ll be familiar with St. Lukes Mews. It’s a residential street in Notting Hill that was used during the film, and it’s now a tourist hotspot. For any Love Actually fans, make sure you take the chance to get a selfie (but be respectful of residents).
Party at the Notting Hill Carnival
Notting Hill Carnival is one of the greatest celebrations in all of London. It’s a cultural fusion of music, dance, and street floats. If you’re in town across the August bank holiday, make sure you get your sequins on and head to the carnival.
Get something to eat at Acklam Village
Acklam Village is just off Portobello Road and is the place to go for delicious and affordable street food, perfect if the last thing you ate was breakfast near Paddington London.
Buy a book from The Notting Hill Bookshop
Made famous by the film Notting Hill, The Notting Hill Bookshop is still open for business. If you’re a literary fiend, consider buying from this independent retailer.
Get some vinyl from Rough Trade
Speaking of independent retailers, make sure you check out Rough Trade, one of the only surviving independent record shops in the city.
Grab a bargain from Portobello Green Market
Portobello Green Market is bustling with vintage items like prints and clothes, and it’s less busy than its sister Portobello Road Market. There are lots of great bargains to be had here, so why not spend what you’ve saved from the hotel deals in Paddington London on a unique market souvenir?
Attend a gin tasting class at The Ginstitute
Fancy a tipple? If so, head to The Ginstitute to attend a gin tasting class or a gin-making workshop and sip a tonic next to one of the big windows overlooking the main market below.
Enjoy a drink at The Churchill Arms
For something slightly more relaxed, head to The Churchill Arms, a pub adorned with flowers and foliage and home to a far more relaxed, slower atmosphere than other pubs in the area.

Trust objects to plan for 82 houses and a ‘visitor centre’ adjacent to The Pineapple, Hill of Airth
Conservation charity the National Trust for Scotland has lodged a formal objection to a planning application lodged by George Russell Construction for a housing development at Mains Farm, Airth, directly adjacent to The Pineapple and the historic Dunmore Estate.  Dating to 1761, The A-Listed Pineapple is one of Scotland’s most exotic and celebrated buildings and was constructed by the Earl of Dunmore amid a purpose-designed landscape.  The property has been in the Trust’s care since 1973.
The Pineapple, Dunmore Estate: photo © The Dunmore Pineapple, Falkirk. David Robertson 1999, National Trust for Scotland
An unsolicited proposal for a visitor centre along with 22 houses was made public in 2018 and the Trust entered into correspondence with the developer.  Contrary to the impression given in the developer’s Design and Access Statement, the Trust did not endorse the proposals and merely requested assurances on the ecological impact on rare species as well as clarification on the purpose of the visitor centre. No such assurances were forthcoming and the developer eventually withdrew the planning application for this initial scheme.
The new application, which is now under consideration by Falkirk Council, almost quadruples the number of proposed houses to 82. The overall scheme causes the Trust great concern for the integrity and setting of the landscape around the Pineapple, as well as the threat to wildlife.   It is also the Trust’s view that a development in this location would set a planning precedent that may mean more of the area being re-zoned for development.
The National Trust for Scotland’s Chief Executive, Phil Long said:
“The Pineapple is one of the most significant buildings in Scotland and its unique ambience is dependent on its setting within Dunmore Park with its woodland and abundant wildlife.
“It is clear to us that this development scheme would have a hugely adverse impact on the site, which is designated within the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.  As we have seen all too often, inappropriately-scaled and sited developments have impaired or overwhelmed many important historic and natural landscapes and it’s our obligation to ensure that this does not happen to The Pineapple.”

21 July 2020 Builders frustrated by poor performance on crucial planning decisions
Responding to official planning performance statistics for 2019/20 published today, trade body Homes for Scotland (HFS) described another overall increase in decision times for housing applications as “hugely frustrating”.
Director of Planning Tammy Swift-Adams said:
“Despite an 11.5 per cent drop in the number of decisions made on local housing applications (defined as being for less than 50 homes), the time taken to make those decisions crept up for the second year running.
“This is concerning given that these small developments are, by nature, the lifeblood of SME home building businesses – a sector supported by Scottish Government loan funding during the crisis, but also needing local government support if it is to thrive”.
“Things are no more positive for major housing applications (those for 50 or more homes), decisions on which were two weeks slower than the previous year at 37.5 weeks – more than double the 16 week statutory timescale.”
“With all of the consultation and discussion time that has gone into improving the planning system, it is extremely frustrating to see this evidence that improvements are just not emerging on the ground.”
“And, of course, we also await the Scottish Government’s decision on whether planning application fees will be increased again. This decision, and the timing of its implementation, must be made in the context of this performance – with home builders currently receiving some of the poorest service across the system whilst already paying the lion’s share of fees.”
Swift-Adams also points to the Scottish Government’s new consultation document proposing changes to Scottish Planning Policy. These include removing the principle that planning applications that will help solve housing shortages should be looked upon favourably by decision-makers. The paper also seems to suggest that planning authorities should focus more singly on allocating their preferred sites and pay less regard to whether or not the homes that are needed are actually going to be built.
She continued:
“Scottish families and communities don’t need housing land. They want real homes to live in, and more of them. That requires a better functioning system and policy that encourages local planning authorities to ensure the sites they choose for housing development can and will be delivered. With the housing market showing encouraging signs post-lockdown, now is the time for local authorities to work closely with home builders to deliver the homes required.”

27 May 2020 New Homes Quality Board – interim board announcement
First step towards creation of New Homes Ombudsman scheme
The first step towards the creation of a New Homes Ombudsman (NHO) scheme has been announced with the appointment of an interim New Homes Quality Board (NHQB) chaired by “New Homes Quality Champion” Natalie Elphicke MP.
As a new independent body, the NHQB will have responsibility for the quality of new build homes and consumer redress. It will be guided by the principles of independence, transparency and integrity, and will comprise a mix of representatives of consumer bodies, home builders, warranty providers, lenders and independents such that it will not be dominated by any one group.
The interim board has ‘met’ for the first time and will now:
• oversee the composition and appointment of a permanent board; • complete, consult on and adopt a new comprehensive and robust industry code of practice that will place more stringent requirements on all parties involved in the construction, inspection, sale and aftercare of new homes; • agree a process to appoint a New Homes Ombudsman (NHO) service to adjudicate against the new code.
Nicola Barclay, Chief Executive of Homes for Scotland, said:
“While housing is a matter that is devolved to the Scottish Government, consumer protection remains a reserved matter and so comes under the responsibility of Westminster, making a UK-wide solution crucially important. Working closely with colleagues in the Home Builders Federation in England, we are delighted to see this progression which reinforces our determination to ensure a high-quality home for each and every purchaser. We are also pleased that the stringent requirements will see consumers receive the same level of clarity and consistency wherever they live.”
The ambition is that a permanent chair and board will be in place by Autumn with a view to the new code and ombudsman service being in place by the start of 2021. There will then be a transition period for builders to sign up to the new arrangements. It is anticipated Government will ultimately legislate to improve consumer redress as soon as possible and these new proposals aim to complement such reform.
Natalie Elphicke said: “This is a welcome move, and a much needed step in the right direction. I am committed to ensuring that the new arrangements will deliver a step change in the quality of new homes and customer experience. They will be based in the principles of independence, transparency and integrity, values I know Government and the industry are determined to instil. I look forward to working with all parties to finalise and implement these changes as quickly as possible.”
All the new arrangements will be paid for by the industry and once established, the NHO will be free to consumers, with access being through a new portal.
Natalie Elphicke is a qualified barrister and solicitor. In 2015 she was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to housing. Natalie’s background is as a national specialist in complex housing and structured finance law and public policy. A former international law firm partner with over £4billion transactional experience, she had been described as “probably the best in the City” in her specialist area of housing.
She has extensive experience structuring and successfully setting up new organisations in her professional capacities, working with a diverse range of stakeholders. This includes most recently at the Housing & Finance Institute. She has a strong reputation as an independent commentator on housing matters ranging from housing policies to building new homes faster as well as in relation to the quality and safety of new build construction.
Natalie is a member of the Jaywick Sands coastal community team and a member of the NHBC advisory panel. She is a voluntary worker at her local homeless shelter, having previously volunteered at free legal/advice centres over many years. In December 2019, Natalie was elected as a Member of Parliament for Dover & Deal.
21 Apr 2020 Housing delivery can build way out of coronavirus crisis
Responding to today’s publication of the latest UK State of the Economy report, Chief Executive of industry body Homes for Scotland Nicola Barclay said:
“Whilst public health has quite rightly been the government’s top priority up to now, it is clear that the economic fallout could have even further reaching consequences for the country. Today’s report highlights that Scotland’s GDP could fall by 33% during the current period of social distancing, with construction noted as one of the most exposed sectors.
“We share the Economy Secretary’s desire to rebuild the economy as quickly as is safely possible and believe that we can, quite literally, build our way out of this. This is why we are working on a recovery plan which includes the core components necessary to kickstart home building, including putting robust control measures in place to protect workers, home purchasers and tenants, as well as working across the sector to ensure everyone is ready to go as soon as we can.
“Delivering the homes of all types that our country needs brings many significant benefits in terms of protecting vital jobs and skills, improving social wellbeing and contributing more widely to the economy through the extensive supply chain.
“Restarting from a standstill requires considerable planning and co-ordination so it is imperative that the Scottish Government works closely with industry to establish a programme for recommencement so we can provide the homes that so many people desperately need.”
9 Apr 2020 Mark Baines, Glasgow School of Art
Mark Baines, who has been a seminal part of the School for 50 years, has passed away (not Covid-19 related).
Mark was one of the first cohort to study on the full time programme at the Mac, went on to work with Andy and Isi at Gillespie Kidd & Coia, with Ian O Robertson Architect and Ian Bridges Architect before returning to GSA to teach generations of architecture students, most recently as Stage Leader for the DipArch programme.
Below is a tribute from his long-time colleague Johnny Rodger, Professor of Urban Literature at The Glasgow School of Art:
Mark Baines
It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing away of our colleague Mark Baines. As an esteemed and respected teacher, practitioner and critic, Mark Baines played a distinctive and vital role at the heart of architectural culture in Glasgow and Scotland in general. Any comprehensive list of his important achievements and his experiences could never be retailed in the space available here, and his place in Glasgow life was a unique one.
His long connection with the Mackintosh School of Architecture started in the early 70s when he was amongst the first cohort of full time architecture students at his beloved Glasgow School of Art. After going out to work as a practising architect for a few years he returned to teach in the school in 1982 and he taught there right up until 2020.
Generations of students were influenced by his encyclopaedic knowledge of the field and his quiet, patient, insightful and inspirational analyses which opened up a whole new spatial and structural world to them. He was the critical eminence grise behind the student edited annual MacMag, and he guided and oversaw the production of that publication which has refined and exposed the creative spirit of the Mac students since 1974. Public recognition of his position as a towering figure in the pedagogical culture of the Mac came when at the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland’s annual Design Tutor of the Year Awards in 2013 he was given a Lifetime Achievement Award.
After MSA Mark started his professional career at the firm of Gillespie Kidd and Coia. The firm had a long association with teaching in the school going back to the 1920s and arguably longer, and Mark joined them as they were at the cutting edge of the rebuilding of the country after WWII. His experience there under the tutelage of Isi Metzstein and Andy MacMillan, set the standards for his own life as an architect and architectural teacher in terms of the fundamental importance of drawing, the vision of the discipline as a collaborative one through the methodologies of the studio, and the necessity of a discursive critical approach to the work.
Mark went on to work with other firms like Ian O Robertson Architect and Ian Bridges Architect through the eighties and onwards , especially on housing projects, and in 2007 completed the design and construction of the massive Merchant Building –a contemporary response in scale and material to the historical setting of Glasgow Cross – with his firm Gholami Baines.
As a critic Mark Baines played a prominent role as a public intellectual, writing chapters and articles for magazines, books and catalogues, putting on exhibitions and giving talks to innumerable groups and societies. Although his knowledge of architecture and architectural history was inexhaustible, and his moral and ethical discourses on where we live and how we do it drew a broad civic public, he became particularly well known for his critiques in a few specialist areas. After working with GKC and studying their work he became one of the acknowledged world experts in the field, writing extensively on the importance of their work in an international sense.
Among the exhibitions he curated on the GKC work, his 2007 one drew the biggest viewing public that The Lighthouse has ever had for any show. He was also an authority on the great 19th century Glasgow architect, Greek Thomson, wrote extensively on his work, campaigned to save numerous of his buildings, and was Chair Person of the Greek Thomson Society. Although his own tastes and indeed practice were of a contemporary not to say modernist outlook, Mark Baines worked tirelessly to broadcast to the world the genius of Thomson’s work and his importance to architectural history.
Mark was a respected and admired colleague, and was recognised by his fellows for the perspicacity of his vision, the originality and acuity of his judgement and the consistency of his approach. For many people he embodied the successes of the studio system at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, as a humane teaching and learning environment. Generations of students and colleagues from all around the world have been humbled then inspired by the breadth of his culture and his willingness to share it. He will be missed greatly at the Glasgow School of Art to which he was totally committed as a creative and collaborative institution.

The Scottish Government has announced a public inquiry will be held to examine issues at the new Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP) and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) sites.
RIAS President Robin Webster OBE says; “The RIAS welcome the move by Health Minister Jeane Freeman’s to hold an inquiry into the delivery of Scotland’s 2 hospitals. This follows our earlier support for inquiries into failures in Schools across Scotland and our continued involvement in these discussions.
The removal of a co-ordinating overseer with professional independence; a broad and comprehensive understanding of the building design and the procurement process; with the time to apply that understanding and vitally, the executive authority to influence it, has inevitably allowed many gaps in the procurement process to open up; such that responsibilities are clouded, and appropriate resolution of issues fails to occur.”

7 wilderness stays that feature ocean, lake and land life

The Serpentine, Island Lake, Langvlei and Rondevlei are a globally acknowledged Ramsar wetland. • One thing for everybody – from a five-star resort (Views) to cheap visitor homes, self-catering choices in varied sizes and environment, to the most effective campsites within the nation (SANParks’ Ebb & Move North Camp). • Most take into account Wilderness to be a village on the N2, however it’s a 18-kilometer stretch of coast from the mouth of the Touw River to Swartvlei that features seaside, lakes, rivers, forest and farmland. It affords a totally completely different trip relying on the place you keep. • It is a fabulous seaside vacation spot as there is no such thing as a street between the properties and the seaside (that’s, be warned: the ocean is fairly wild right here). Sands Street is my favourite; It has retained its old school, low-key avenue look of the seaside bungalow and is stage with the seaside. • In case you favor canoeing and chook watching, go for a riverfront, ideally going through north for the solar or someplace alongside Bo Langvlei Street. • Lots of the services right here have related names: Wilderness Dunes and Dolphin Dunes shouldn’t be confused with Dune Seashore. Ocean View shouldn’t be Views (or Oceans); Lodge on the Lake shouldn’t be a lakeside lodge, and home on the seaside shouldn’t be a translation of On the Seashore.

Bo-Langvlei Street is a dust street that surrounds Langvlei Lake. It’s undeveloped and peaceable and is much from the busy N2. Rolling hills with pure vegetation provide nice views of the water. That is the place Rod and Hydie McDade retired and constructed their very fairly two-story home and the adjoining cottage in order that it was precisely on this space. The complete wilderness space is nice for chook watchers, however the proximity of addition to nonetheless waters to the Malachite Chook Sanctuary (a beautiful 20-minute stroll) and views of Langvlei make it an particularly sensible choice.
