London’s Historic Cinemas
Tumblr media
As some visitors at Park Avenue Hyde Park may be aware, the London Film Festival finished its annual tenure in the city for 2021. Hosting new work from international auteurs and up and coming filmmakers, the London Film Festival is one of the most influential and reputed in Europe, often seeing red carpet appearances from some of the best-known celebrities in the world.
Whilst the film festival has closed for this year, the cinemas that hosted this exciting festival are a massive part of the experience. From West End gems to cutting edge gateways into new districts, taking a trip to one of the many historic cinemas in London is an enriching way for Park Avenue J Hotel London Hyde Park guests to get to know the city. Below you can find out more about the revolutionary, historic and all-around magnetising cinemas in the English capital, and the types of events that take place there.
Regent Street Cinema
The Regent Street Cinema is one of the most famous in London and was opened in 1848 as a theatre for what is now the University of Westminster. Often cited as the “birthplace of British Cinema” the projection capabilities of the 187-seater on Regent Street allows it to screen 16 and 35 mm film reels as well as 4K digital formats. This means that cinephile guests at hotel accommodation London can expect a varied programme of often never before seen movies.  Another historic accolade held by the Regent Street Cinema is that it was the first in the UK to show X-rated films, although now it is rather more family-friendly!
Prince Charles Cinema
A firm favourite for cult films, the Prince Charles Cinema is the home to some of London’s best movie marathons and is easily reachable for guests at the Park Avenue J Hotel London. From Lord Of The Rings all-nighters to late-night Halloween specials, Prince Charles was built in 1962 as a theatre but was developed into a  cinema for adult movies before its expansion into a fan-favourite repertory cinema. The Prince Charles Cinema, which is located just off of Leicester Square, is famous for hosting regular Q & A’s and for its seasonal Rocky Horror Picture Show and Sound of Music singalong screenings, making it the proud last independent cinema standing in the West End.
Brixton Ritzy
Not only is the Brixton Ritzy a social hub and community-oriented south London cinema but is a Grade II listed building too. With its music and spoken word staging second-floor cafe bar, the Brixton Ritzy has been establishing itself as a cinema for the people since it was opened in 1911 as the “Electric Pavilion”. With a long history of name changes and left-wing political advocacy, the Ritzy is accessible for all and wears its historic London reputation proudly.
Rio Dalston
The Rio in Dalston is a two-screen cinema on Kingsland High Street that has been open since 1915. Originally an auctioneers shop, the cinema was redeveloped in the art deco style seen today in 1933 and was refurbished once again in the 1950s’ after suffering damage during the Blitz. Its history as a foreign language and adult film cinema during the 70s’ saw it grow into a much loved independent movie hub in later decades. Now the Rio is registered as a not for profit charity, in keeping with its long history and stellar international programming.

Hyde Park, Chicago - Wikipedia
Community in Chicago, Illinois, United States
Community area in Illinois, United States
Hyde Park is a neighborhood and community area on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan seven miles (11 km) south of the Chicago Loop.
Hyde Park's official boundaries are 51st Street/Hyde Park Boulevard on the north, the Midway Plaisance (between 59th and 60th streets) on the south, Washington Park on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east.[3] According to another definition, a section to the north between 47th Street[4] and 51st Street/Hyde Park Boulevard is also included as part of Hyde Park, although this area is officially the southern part of the Kenwood community area. The area encompassing Hyde Park and the southern part of Kenwood is sometimes referred to as Hyde Park-Kenwood.[5]
Hyde Park is home to the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, and two of Chicago's four historic sites listed in the original 1966 National Register of Historic Places (Chicago Pile-1, the world's first artificial nuclear reactor, and Robie House).[6] In the early 21st century, Hyde Park received national attention for its association with U.S. President Barack Obama, who, before running for president, was a law lecturer at the University of Chicago.
History
Founding and early years
In 1853, Paul Cornell, a real estate speculator and cousin of Cornell University founder Ezra Cornell, purchased 300 acres (1.2 km2) of land[7] between 51st and 55th streets along the shore of Lake Michigan,[8] with the idea of attracting other Chicago businessmen and their families to the area.[7] The land was located seven miles south of Downtown Chicago in a rural area that enjoyed weather tempered by the lake – cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It was conveniently located near the Illinois Central Railroad, which had been constructed two years earlier. Cornell successfully negotiated land in exchange for a railroad station at 53rd Street. Hyde Park quickly became a suburban retreat for affluent Chicagoans who wanted to escape the noise and congestion of the rapidly growing city.
In 1857, the Hyde Park House, an upscale hotel, was built on the shore of Lake Michigan near the 53rd Street railroad station.[7] For two decades, the Hyde Park House served as a focal point of Hyde Park social life. During this period, it was visited or lived in by many prominent guests, including Mary Todd Lincoln, who lived there with her children for two and a half months in the summer of 1865 (shortly after her husband was assassinated).[9] The Hyde Park House burned down in an 1879 fire. The Sisson Hotel was built on the site in 1918 and was eventually converted into a condominium building (the Hampton House).
In 1861, Hyde Park was incorporated as an independent township (called Hyde Park Township). Its boundaries were Pershing Road (39th Street) on the north, 138th Street on the south, State Street on the west, and Lake Michigan and the Indiana state line on the east.[10] The territory of the township encompassed most of what is now the South Side of Chicago. Hyde Park Township remained independent of Chicago until it was annexed to the city in 1889.[11] After annexation, the definition of Hyde Park as a Chicago neighborhood was restricted to the historic core of the former township, centered on Cornell's initial development between 51st and 55th streets near the lakefront.
The Hyde Park Herald, the neighborhood's community newspaper, was established in 1882 and continues to be published weekly.
Growth and notability
In 1891 (two years after Hyde Park was annexed to the city of Chicago),[7] the University of Chicago was established in Hyde Park through the philanthropy of John D. Rockefeller and the leadership of William Rainey Harper.[8] The University of Chicago eventually grew into one of the world's most prestigious universities, and is now associated with eighty-nine Nobel Prize laureates.[12]
In 1893, Hyde Park hosted the World's Columbian Exposition (a world's fair marking the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World). The World's Columbian Exposition brought fame to the neighborhood, which gave rise to an inflow of new residents and spurred new development that gradually started transforming Hyde Park into a more urban area. However, since most of the structures built for the fair were temporary, it left few direct traces in the neighborhood. The only major structure from the fair that is still standing today is Charles Atwood's Palace of Fine Arts, which has since been converted into the Museum of Science and Industry.
In the early decades of the twentieth century, many upscale hotels were built in Hyde Park (mostly along the lakefront). Hyde Park became a resort area in Chicago.[8] Most of these hotels closed during the Great Depression, and were eventually converted into apartment and condominium buildings (most of which are still standing today).
Historical images of Hyde Park can be found in Explore Chicago Collections, a digital repository made available by Chicago Collections archives, libraries and other cultural institutions in the city.[13]
Racial integration, economic decline, and urban renewal
Until the middle of the twentieth century, Hyde Park remained an almost exclusively white neighborhood (despite its proximity to Chicago's Black Belt). Hyde Parkers relied on racially restrictive covenants to keep African Americans out of the neighborhood. At the time, the use of such covenants was supported by the University of Chicago.[14]
After the Supreme Court banned racially restrictive covenants in 1948, African Americans began moving into Hyde Park, and the neighborhood gradually became multiracial. In 1955, civil rights activist Leon Despres was elected alderman of Hyde Park and held the position for twenty years.[15] Despres argued passionately for racial integration and fair housing on the floor of the Chicago City Council, and became known as the "liberal conscience of Chicago" for often casting the sole dissenting vote against the policies of Chicago's then-mayor Richard J. Daley.[16]
During the 1950s, Hyde Park experienced economic decline as a result of the white flight that followed the rapid inflow of African Americans into the neighborhood.[8] In the 1950s and 1960s, the University of Chicago, in its effort to counteract these trends, sponsored one of the largest urban renewal plans in the nation.[17][18] The plan involved the demolition and redevelopment of entire blocks of decayed buildings with the goal of creating an "interracial community of high standards."[5] After the plan was carried out, Hyde Park's average income soared by seventy percent, but its African American population fell by forty percent, since the substandard housing primarily occupied by low-income African Americans had been purchased, torn down, and replaced, with the residents not being able to afford to remain in the newly rehabilitated areas. The ultimate result of the renewal plan was that Hyde Park did not experience the economic depression that occurred in the surrounding areas and became a racially integrated middle-class neighborhood.
Subdivisions
Tumblr media
The southwestern part of Hyde Park serves as the campus of the
University of Chicago
, one of the world's most prestigious universities.
The University of Chicago
The central campus of the University of Chicago—including Pritzker School of Medicine, the University of Chicago Hospital, the historic Main Quadrangles, and the Booth School of Business—is bounded by Washington Park on the west, 55th Street on the north, University Ave. on the east, and 61st Street on the south, placing most of the University within Hyde Park's southwestern quadrant (with the remainder, south of the Midway, being in Woodlawn). The University also owns a number of additional properties throughout Hyde Park, with many concentrated along a narrow corridor along 59th Street between the central campus and the Metra tracks—including, for example, the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and International House. Due to the University's proximity, the blocks just east of the central campus are dominated by (privately owned) student and faculty residences.
East Hyde Park
Tumblr media
Looking east along South Shore Drive near 55th St. in Hyde Park (aka East Hyde Park)
The part of Hyde Park located east of the Metra tracks is locally called East Hyde Park. This area, the part of Hyde Park nearest to Lake Michigan, has a large number of high-rise condominiums, many of them facing the lakefront. In this respect, East Hyde Park differs markedly from the rest of Hyde Park, where the vast majority of residences are either three-story apartment buildings or single-family homes (with only a small number of high-rise condominiums).
South Kenwood
Although the neighborhood bounded by 47th Street on the north, 51st Street (Hyde Park Boulevard) on the south, Cottage Grove Avenue on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east is officially the southern half of the Kenwood community area, it is often considered part of Hyde Park due to the two areas' shared culture and history; "Hyde Park-Kenwood" is thus sometimes applied to this collective area (as in, e.g., the "Hyde Park-Kenwood Historic District"). Some differences are nonetheless apparent: unlike Hyde Park, which is dominated by three- and four-story apartment buildings and modest family homes, southern Kenwood boasts a great many luxurious mansions, built mainly at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries for wealthy Chicagoans. A number of prominent Chicagoans currently reside or own homes in this area, including former U.S. president Barack Obama and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Boxer Muhammad Ali and former Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad also once resided in south Kenwood.

Diversity
Tumblr media
U.S. President
Barack Obama
has lived near Hyde Park for more than twenty years.
Hyde Park is one of Chicago's most racially diverse neighborhoods. Its population is 46.8% White, 29.9% African American, 12.1% Asian American, 7.0% Hispanic, and 4.2% of other races or of more than one race.[1] There are significant differences between the racial demographics of the part of Hyde Park south of 55th Street (most of which is part of the University of Chicago campus) and the part of Hyde Park north of 55th Street. Residents south of 55th Street are predominantly White and Asian American, with only a relatively small percentage being African American. North of 55th Street, on the other hand, African Americans make up approximately half of the population. The population of the northwestern corner of Hyde Park (north of 55th Street and west of Drexel Avenue) is almost 100% African American.[20]
Hyde Park's location in the center of the predominantly African American South Side of Chicago as well as its large population of well-to-do black residents have made it an important cultural and political hub of Chicago's black community. Many of Chicago's prominent African American politicians live or have lived in Hyde Park, including former Chicago Mayor Harold Washington,[21] former U.S. Senator Carol Moseley Braun,[22] and former U.S. President Barack Obama.[14]
Politics
Hyde Parkers of all racial backgrounds are known for being staunchly liberal in their political views. About 95% of the residents vote for Democratic candidates in general elections.[14]
Landmarks
The following Hyde Park community area properties have been added to the National Register of Historic Places: Chicago Beach Hotel, Arthur H. Compton House, East Park Towers, Chicago Pile-1, Flamingo-on-the-Lake Apartments, Isadore H. Heller House, Charles Hitchcock Hall, Hotel Del Prado, Hotel Windermere East, Frank R. Lillie House, Robert A. Millikan House, Poinsettia Apartments, Promontory Apartments, Frederick C. Robie House, George Herbert Jones Laboratory, St. Thomas Church and Convent, Shoreland Hotel, German submarine U-505, and University Apartments.
In addition, the NRHP Hyde Park-Kenwood Historic District and Jackson Park Historic Landscape District and Midway Plaisance are located, at least in part, within the Hyde Park community area.
Promontory Point
Promontory Point is a man-made peninsula that extends out into Lake Michigan at 55th Street, providing views of the Downtown Chicago skyline to the north. Promontory Point is a common location for picnicking, sunbathing, and swimming. It made news as the location of the wedding reception between George Lucas and Mellody Hobson in June 2013. [23]
Jackson Park
The southeastern corner of Hyde Park contains the northern end of Jackson Park. Jackson Park consists of lagoons surrounding an island in the middle (called the Wooded Island), on which a small Japanese garden is located. It is home to a large population of beavers and over two dozen species of birds. The Midway Plaisance, a wide boulevard that runs from Stony Island Avenue to Cottage Grove Avenue between 59th and 60th streets, connects Jackson Park to Washington Park (located to the west of Hyde Park).
Shopping districts
Tumblr media

53rd, 55th, and 57th streets host most of the businesses in Hyde Park.
53rd Street
53rd Street is Hyde Park's oldest shopping district, lined with many small businesses and restaurants offering various dining options. Harper Court, a small-business-oriented shopping center, extends north of 53rd Street along Harper Avenue. A farmers' market is held there in the summer.
55th Street
The segment of 55th Street between the Metra line and the lake offers a series of ethnic restaurants serving Thai, Japanese, and Korean cuisine. To the west of the Metra line between 54th and 55th streets lies the Hyde Park Shopping Center. The shopping center was formerly anchored by the Treasure Island grocery store, and also includes a Walgreens, Ace Hardware, Office Depot, Potbelly Sandwich Works, the Bonjour Bakery and Cafe, and an upscale French restaurant called "La Petite Folie."
57th Street
57th Street is noted for its independent bookstores, including the South Side branch of Powell's and the general-readership branch of the Seminary Co-op bookstore, known as "57th Street Books." 57th Street also offers the Medici Restaurant and Bakery, TrueNorth Cafe, and the Salonica Restaurant, along with small grocery stores, hair stylists, and dry cleaners. On the first weekend in June, the venerable 57th Street Art Fair takes up 57th Street between Kimbark and Kenwood avenues.

The downshift drags on in Miami’s condo market
Quiet has become the new status quo in the condo market.
Miami-Dade County is facing a supply of 58 months, or nearly five years, of condos priced at $5 million and up. That figure is based on the market average of about six units selling per month with 350 units on the market, according to MLS data compiled by EWM Realty International.
Of the units priced at $5 million and up that sold over the past year, 96 percent closed for less than their original asking prices. However, sellers are typically reducing their pricing by only 5 percent, the report found.
The drop in preconstruction inventory as a growing number of projects have been canceled or put on hold since the cycle began in 2011 — including the recent cancellations of Naranza at Edgewater; Spark, also in Edgewater; Fasano Residences in Miami Beach; and the Diplomat project in Hallandale Beach — is a sign that the market is correcting itself.
Announcements of new projects have been few and far between. The handful of recently launched developments are priced more affordably and located in Greater Downtown Miami, a market where lower listing prices will fare better as the glut of luxury condo supply totals more than five years, according to data from Peter Zalewski’s Condo Vultures Realty, a brokerage that specializes in buying and selling bulk condo deals. The excess inventory Condo Vultures tracked doesn’t even include the preconstruction market.
Heading farther north to Broward and Palm Beach counties, the number of projects in the pipeline is lower, but some of the same issues are present in both areas.
The Conrad and W Fort Lauderdale, for example, still have a number of unsold units. According to a 2018 report by International Sales Group, the W — which the Related Companies purchased and renovated — is only 55 percent sold. And the Conrad, which the Heafey Group purchased, is under 50 percent sold.
Below is the pipeline of South Florida condo projects proposed, planned, under construction or completed since the beginning of this cycle. The data was compiled by Cranespotters, an entity connected to Condo Vultures Realty, which sourced data from public records, mainstream media news reports and private research.

Chicago’s architecture festival is back for another season, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
150 North Riverside (Photo by Eric Allix Rogers. Courtesy of the Chicago Architecture Foundation.)
This year there will be 250 places and spaces that you can visit for free during Open House Chicago, including 50 new locations.
OHC will happen October 13th and 14th.  It’s free to the public.  But a few places require you to RSVP online.  And if you’re a member of the Chicago Architecture Foundation you get to go to the heads of the lines, and see a few places that the hoi polloi can’t.
For tons of juicy information, follow this link.

BPDA Board approves seven development projects, 223 residential units
BOSTON–The Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) Board of Directors approved seven development projects at their August meeting. The projects will generate a total of 223 residential units, 42 of which will be affordable. In addition, the projects will create over 4,000 jobs upon their completion.
Included in the approved projects is Exchange South End, a 1.6 million square foot mixed-use office, commercial, technology and life science research space that will create thousands of permanent jobs, a 1.1 acre new publicly accessible open space, local transportation improvements, and over 30,000 square feet of civic space.
The BPDA continues to make progress towards Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s goal ofincreasing affordable housing to support a strong middle-class. Since the start of 2018, 20 percent of all residential units approved are income-restricted. In total, 769 of the 3,760 residential units approved this year will be income-restricted for low or middle-income families.
Development Projects
Exchange South End approval paves way for 1.6 million square feet of life science, technology and commercial space, thousands of jobs
Live: $12.5M payment to create affordable housing Work: Over 4,000 permanent jobs, over 3,000 construction jobs Connect: 30,000 square feet of civic space situated around over an acre of new central publicly accessible open space, known as the Albany Green Size: 1.6 million square feet
Located on a 5.6 acre property at 540 Albany Street, bordering Lower Roxbury, Dorchester and South Boston, the Exchange South End will convert the former location of the Boston Flower Exchange into 1.6 million square feet of mixed-use commercial, technology, and life science research space. In addition, the project will include 30,000 square feet of civic space situated around Albany Green, a new publicly accessible open space, and up to 1,155 parking spaces. The project will consist of the phased construction of four buildings.
The project is designed to integrate multimodal transportation site-access improvements, including direct connections to the I-93 corridor, the South Bay Harbor trail, the South End neighborhood, and nearby transit stops. The proposed implementation of pedestrian friendly streetscapes, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramps, designated bike lanes, bike share and storage infrastructure, and traffic signal upgrades will serve to promote safe, accessible, and healthy mobility options.
The project will contribute $12.5 million in housing linkage funds to support affordable housing, and $2.5 million in jobs linkage funds to support job training and workforce development.
Consistent with the Smart Utilities Policy passed by the BPDA in June, the project is working closely with BPDA staff to conduct an analysis of the technical and economic feasibility of implementing a district energy microgrid as part of the project.
30 Penniman Road to bring affordable units to Allston, revitalize Penniman Park
Live: Six affordable housing units, direct access to Penniman Park, over 51 percent owner-occupancy Work: 100 construction jobs, new residents to support local businesses Connect: A quarter mile from closest transit, improved pedestrian amenities, walking distance to Boston Landing and MBTA Green Line Size: 47,640 square feet
The proposal for 30 Penniman Road in Allston includes a new seven-story, 46-unit residential condominium building, including two artist live/work units. The building will have 42 parking spaces, consisting of 40 mechanical garage parking spaces and two accessible parking spaces.
As proposed, the 46 residential homeownership units will consist of 40 market-rate units and six Inclusionary Development Policy (IDP) units. There will be a mix of unit-types, with one studio unit, 34 one-bedroom units, five two-bedroom units, four three-bedroom units, and two loft style units with direct access from the street.
The approved project proposal also includes a contribution of $46,000 toward improvements and upgrades to Penniman Park.
90 Antwerp Street to create 20 new homeowner units, including 12 affordable units and new open space in Brighton
Live: 20 new units, 12 affordable Work: 30 construction jobs Connect: Over 10,000 square feet of publicly accessible open space, 20 bike storage units Size: 28,500 square feet
The 90 Antwerp project consists of 20 homeownership units, including 12 income-restricted units. The project will create over 10,000 square feet of publicly accessible open space to benefit the neighborhood.
This mixed-income residential project in Brighton was proposed in response to the 2017 Request for Proposals (RFP) for the parcel, donated by Harvard University, with the goal of creating affordable homeownership opportunities and publicly accessible open space.
The project will include 20 on-site parking spaces for residents, two visitor parking spaces, bicycle parking, community amenity space, and other support spaces.
Sixty percent of all units will be income restricted units affordable to families earning 80 percent or 100 percent of Area Median Income (AMI). The unit types will be a varied mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units.
40 Mount Hood Road to bring homeownership units, transportation improvements to Brighton
Live: 151 homeownership units, 16 percent income-restricted Connect: Funding for Allston-Brighton Mobility Study, support for use of public transportation Size: 74,052 square feet
The 40 Mount Road project will transform an existing hotel into 151 homeownership residential units. The project will be a mix of studios, one, two and three-bedroom residential units, and is located in proximity to the B Branch of the MBTA Green Line.
The public realm surrounding the project will be improved with approximately 10,000 square feet of landscaped space lining the property on both Mount Hood and Egremont Roads, creating an active edge along a corridor that connects the residential neighborhood to Commonwealth Avenue. The area will be enhanced for pedestrians with new street furniture, trees, plantings, lightning and path patterning.
40 Mount Hood Road exceeds the required IDP and will have 16 percent of units as income-restricted. This means 24 of the total units will be income-restricted, of which 10 will be made affordable to households earning no more than 80 percent AMI.
Included in the project is a robust transportation mitigation package, consisting of $75,000 toward the Allston-Brighton Mobility Study, $20/month per unit for five years for a shuttle service, MBTA, or other transit measure deemed appropriate by BPDA, and the installation of a Blue Bike Station on the project site or in close proximity.
The developer will also contribute $75,000 toward public realm improvements along Commonwealth Avenue, including necessary upgrades to the pedestrian signals and accessible ramps at the Commonwealth Avenue and Mount Hood Road intersection. In addition, the developer will contribute $25,000 to the City of Boston’s Parks and Recreation.
Notices of Project Change (NPC)
Parcel U in Jamaica Plain to create 54 homeownership units
Live: 54 homeownership units, seven homeownership income-restricted units Work: 40 construction jobs Connect: Two new public pocket parks
Located on an approximately 126,070 square foot former MBTA site in Jamaica Plain and bound by Hyde Park Avenue, Ukraine Way, Tollgate Cemetery, and the MBTA Commuter Rail tracks, Parcel U will create 54 homeownership units, over the course of two phases. Originally approved in 2014, the approval of this NPC will increase the number of units in Phase B of the project from 24 to 30. The project will also create two new pocket parks for the public.
69 A Street in South Boston moves forward with proposed project updates
Work: Over 70 construction jobs over the length of the project, 33,700 net square feet of new office space for a vibrant live/work/play environment Connect: Developer partnering with students and schools in South Boston to participate in student exchange and cultural learning opportunities provided by CIEE, Inc.
The 69 A Street project site consists of three adjacent parcels located in South Boston. There are two existing structures at the site, a three-story brick and beam building formerly used as a rivet factory and a two-story building.
The project was originally approved in 2016, but the approval of this NPC will revise the original project to include the removal of the project’s sixth story, the removal of the originally approved rear addition to the existing three-story building, a decrease of commercial gross floor area, a 5,900 square foot floor plate reduction, the removal of 1,300 square feet of deck space, and the relocation of 1,070 square feet of roof deck from the rear of the building to the front of the building, stepping back the fifth floor.
As a result of these proposed changes, the proposed development will now consist of the demolition of the existing two-story building at the rear of the site, as well as the renovation and two-story addition to the existing building. This will include 33,700 square feet of commercial space and 12,000 square feet of ground floor retail space with 18 off-street parking spaces.
Revisions to East Boston’s 187-191 & 211 Condor Street given green light
Live: 21 homeownership units, three IDP Connect: Pedestrian access improvements, including new sidewalks in and around the project site, a financial contribution to local East Boston community organizations
Originally approved in 2017, an NPC was submitted to pull the new structure back from the edge of Condor Street, away from the waterfront along the Chelsea River. As a result, the building will be smaller upon completion. The following changes were made to the proposed building located at 211 Condor Street: a reduction of two residential units, a reduction of three off-street parking spaces, and a reduction in the gross floor area.

How to Cycle in London
Tumblr media
London is one of the most connected cities in the world, with a leading underground rail network, national and international overground train stations, multiple airports that fly planes to every corner of the country, one of the busiest bus networks in Europe, and the iconic black taxi cabs. There are so many ways to get around the big city, but sometimes, it’s nice to get active and cycle.
With such a complex road infrastructure and thousands of vehicles, you might be thinking it would be easier to hop on public transport from your hotel near Hyde Park than to cycle around town, but this isn’t necessarily true.
The city has invested lots of money into encouraging people to get on bikes in a bid to get fitter and be more eco-friendly, and this extends to London visitors, too. If you’re visiting London and want to learn more about how you can see the city by bike, keep reading.
Hiring a Bicycle
First of all, you’ll need a bike. The Santander Cycle scheme allows people to hire bikes cheaply from almost anywhere in London. Whether you’re staying at a hotel in Elephant and Castle or the Park Avenue J Hotel London Hyde Park, there’s guaranteed to be a cycle docking station near you, but you can check online to find your nearest one.
When you’ve found a station, simply follow the instructions on the screen to hire a bike! When you’re done, all you need to do is return the cycle to any station. Easy!
Safety Tips
Once you’ve hired a bike, it’s important to beware of safety rules so you can safely cycle around London and make it back to your room at one of the Hyde Park hotels in London in one piece.
Stop at red traffic lights
Firstly, you need to follow traffic signals as if you were in a car. London is a complex city with many crossroads and one-way systems, so you must remember to stop at red traffic lights.
Don’t cycle on the path
You should always cycle on the road or a dedicated cycle path. This will allow for a smoother journey and ensure the safety of yourself and pedestrians alike. Most London streets have cycle lanes for added safety.
Make eye contact with drivers
It’s recommended that you make eye contact with drivers where possible, especially before manoeuvring or turning. If you make eye contact, it’s safe to assume they’ve seen you and are aware of you. This may mean looking over your shoulder as you ride.
Signal clearly
The final safety tip is to signal clearly using your arms if you intend to turn left or right. This will let drivers know where you intend to go and allow them to make provisions for you.
Cycle safely around London
Cycling in London can seem scary, so it’s best to start with well established, short routes close to your accommodation at Park Avenue Hyde Park if you’re unsure. Overall, cycling in London is a great way to see the city and can help to save you money on your trip, too!

Top 20 Best Design Projects By Frank Lloyd Wright
Top 20 Best Design Projects By Frank Lloyd Wright – Over the course of his 70-year career, Wright became one of the most prolific, unorthodox and controversial masters of 20th-century architecture, creating no less than twelve of the Architectural Record’s hundred most important buildings of the century. Realizing the first truly American architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses, offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels and museums stand as testament to someone whose unwavering belief in his own convictions changed both his profession and his country. Frank Lloyd Wright changed the way we build and the way we live. Best Design Projects honors this celebrated American architect with the 20 most beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright houses.

Fallingwater
Also known as the Kaufmann Residence, the Fallingwater is by many regarded as the most beautiful of all Frank Lloyd Wright houses. And it isn’t hard to understand why. The spectacular house was built between 1936 and 1938 over a small waterfall in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It served as a summer retreat of Edgar J. Kaufmann and his family until 1963 when it was bestowed to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy which shortly thereafter opened it to the public.

Hollyhock House
Also known as the Aline Barnsdall Hollyhock House, this Wright’s home was designed for the American oil heiress Aline Barnsdall in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Constructed between 1919 and 1921, the Hollyhock House was conceived as a part of a larger project but the planned arts and theater complex was never completed. In 1927, Barnsdall donated her home and property to the city of Los Angeles to be used as a public art park. In 1997, the Mayan Revival style house was designated as a National Historic Landmark. It was later also added to the Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings that have been nominated for the inclusion to the World Heritage Sites list.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, located at Chicago Avenue in Oak Park, Illinois, was the famous architect’s residence and studio. He lived and worked here for two decades (from 1889 until 1909) during which he designed over 150 buildings, largely residential ones. In 2012, the architect’s former home and studio was acquired by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust, a non-for-profit organization dedicated to preservation of the architect’s masterpieces and presenting his legacy to the public.

Robie House
Listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, designated as a National Historic Landmark and added to the Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings that are nominated for inclusion to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list, the Robie House is considered to be the finest Wright’s Prairie style house. Located in Hyde Park, Chicago, the house was built between 1908 and 1910 for the Robie family who, however, didn’t enjoy their new home for long. The house changed its owners several times before it was in 1997 acquired by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust that had it restored and opened to the public.

Taliesin West
Wright built the Taliesin West in 1937 as his winter residence, studio and architectural school but the original building continued to be changed and expanded with new structures, many of which were designed by the architect’s students. Today, the Wright’s winter residence in Scottsdale, Arizona, is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and the campus of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture but it is also open to public viewing.

Ennis House
Built for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1924, the Ennis House is the last of four Wright’s textile block houses. The house reveals a strong influence of the ancient Mayan architecture and is often cited as one of the finest examples of the Mayan Revival style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Since 2011, the Ennis House has been owned by the American businessman Ron Burkle. But before the ownership was transferred from the Ennis House Foundation, Burkle agreed to open his new home in Los Angeles for public viewing 12 days a year.

Rosenbaum House
The Rosenbaum House is one of the first Wright’s Usonian style homes and according to many, one of the finest examples of the architect’s vision of the middle-income family houses. It was built in 1940 for Stanley Rosenbaum and his wife Mildred, and remained in possession of the Rosenbaum family until 1999 when Mildred went to a nursing home. In the same year, the only Wright’s house in Alabama was bought from the Rosenbaums by the City of Florence that had it restored and opened to the public as a museum.

Taliesin
Also known as Taliesin East, Taliesin is the architect’s former home and studio in Spring Green, Wisconsin. It was built in Prairie style in 1911 but the current structure is a third version as both the first and second version were damaged heavily by two major fires. Just like Taliesin West, Taliesin was after Wright’s death conferred to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation that was founded by the architect and his third wife Olgivanna in 1940. In 1976, the Wright’s home in Spring Green was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark District. Taliesin is currently also being considered for the inclusion to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as a part of the Frank Lloyd Wright Buildings.

Millard House
Also referred to as La Miniatura, the Millard House is the so-called textile block house, the first of only four designed by the architect in 1923-24. It was built for rare book dealer Alice Millard for whom Wright had already designed a home in Illinois in the early 1900s. Even though the Millard House is today one of Wright’s most famous and most admired houses, it initially wasn’t well received by the critics. Located in Pasadena, California, the house is still used as a private residence. In 2011, it was offered for sale at nearly $4 million.

Gordon House
The Gordon House is among the last Usonian style houses designed by the celebrated architect for the middle class families. It was designed for Conrad Gordon and his wife Evelyn in 1957 but it was completed only in 1963, four years after its designer’s death. In 2001, it was moved to its current location in Oregon Garden in Silverton by the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy in order to save it from destruction as its owners decided to demolish it. In 2002, reassembled and restored Wright’s masterpiece was opened to the public. Two years later, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Storer House
The Storer House is a Mayan Revival textile block house which was built in 1923 in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, for Dr. John Storer. Just like the first Wright’s textile block house – La Miniatura, the Storer House came to be regarded as one of the architect’s finest works only in the second half of the 20th century. In the 1980s, it was bought by the American film producer Joel Silver who had it restored with the aid of Eric Lloyd Wright (the architect’s grandson). Silver sold the house in 2002 for a little less than $3 million. In 2013, it was put on the market again at the asking price of just below $7 million.

Nathan G. Moore House
The Nathan G. Moore House or the Moore-Dugal Residence was built twice by the famous architect. In 1895, Wright built the house in Tudor Revival style as asked by its owner Nathan G. Moore. After it had been damaged by a fire almost three decades later, he was asked to rebuilt it. While incorporating elements of the Tudor style, this time the architect also added his own distinct touch. The house not far from the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park, Illinois, is currently home to the Dugal family.

Getting To Know Medieval London
Tumblr media
Another stalwart of the Medieval London scene, All-Hallows-By-The-Tower is a church with hundreds of years of history, potentially dating back to 675 AD. The church was notorious in the medieval era for being the burial grounds for many of the executed prisoners in the nearby Tower of London. The church has a very spooky crypt within which you can find the crows nest from Ernest Shackleton’s final voyage ship - the Quest. Other interesting notes about All-Hallows include the fact that Samuel Pepys the diarist watched from its spire as the great fire of London ravaged the city. A dramatic and historic church then.
London’s history dates back to 50 AD, not the oldest in Europe by a long shot, but certainly oen of the most interesting and tumultuous. Over the years, London has battled many events and tragedies and continuously rebuilt itself in the wake. From the Georgian townhouses of the Park Avenue J Hotel to the looming gothic spires of the city’s Westminster era, the collage of styles just goes to show how much history the Great British capital’s amassed.
This blog will explore some of the best places to visit for those who want to learn about the Medieval period of London, specifically between 1066 and the late 15th century. From awe-inspiring relics to interactive exhibits, these Medieval tourist attractions are open for guests at Central London hotel rooms to visit and expand their knowledge to encyclopedic levels.
The Tower Of London
Dating back to 1066, the Tower of London was built in the wake of the Norman invasion of 1066, an event the harked the beginning of the Medieval era. The tower itself has changed its identity many times over the years. It was once a menagerie built by King Henry III in 1235, and then became a prison that most notably was the murder site for a young King Edward V and his brother Richard of Shrewsbury in the 1480s and the Kray Twins prison in the 1950s’.
Guests at Park Avenue Hyde Park can learn more about the tower’s tumultuous history between 9 am and 4.30 am on Tuesdays to Sundays.
Temple Church
The Temple Church is recognisable from its rounded walls and surrounding gardens. The buildings around it are now home to what are arguably the “knights” of the modern-day - lawyers, but back in the 12th century they were the home of the Knights of Templar, a religious organisation shrouded in mystery. What is known about the Knights of Templar is that they were part of the Crusades of the Middle East and travelled to Jerusalem in the year 1119. Now owned by the Crown, the area still retains its sense of mystery and authority.
The London Stone
Thought to be a central city marker dating back to the Roman era, little else is known about the London Stone except that it was first mentioned by King Athelstan in the 10th century. Guests of Park Hotel restaurants and accommodation can now see the stone behind an iron grill on Cannon Street where it still emits an aura of mystery.
The Clink Prison Museum
To learn more about the grisly side of Medieval London, the Clink Prison Museum offers up all shades of nasty. Located near London Bridge, the Clink Prison Museum showcases one of the most notorious prisons in the UK. originally run by the Bishop of Winchester as part of his land, the prison and was established in 1144. Needless to say, this museum is not for the faint of heart and houses examples of torture machines, squalid cell conditions and more within its walls near London Bridge.

Brutalist London: Our Guide
Tumblr media
Brutalist architecture is something you either love or hate. London has some marvellous examples of brutalism, and no matter which side your preference falls on, they’re certainly striking to look at.
Following World War II brutalism played an important part in shaping the landscape of London as the city was re-built, with clean lines and severe structures they once appeared modern and brave. Today these buildings create a sharp contrast to the ornate and decorative buildings they share a context with and are an important part of London’s architectural history.
The Barbican
After being almost entirely razed by the Blitz, the Barbican’s architects created an ambitious and unique proposal to transform and rebuild the site. Today it’s home to 4,000 residents across 2,000 flats, organised around schools, a church, a library, an artificial lake, conservatory and an entire arts centre. The planners left no detail unconsidered, from the 40 storey towers to the basement theatre and cinemas.
The entire site received Grade II listed status in 2001 and today visitors can explore the site freely, including the many public spaces, cafes, restaurants, highwalks and estate gardens.
With an imposing portico, classic Georgian features and neat little window boxes, the Park Avenue J Hotel couldn;t be further from brutalism. Exuding character on the outside, and wrapping you in comfort on the inside, make sure you look for this hotel near Hyde Park, London.
The Brunswick
Brunswick centre was designed and opened in the 1960s, as a mixed development with an open shopping precinct complete with cinema and residential accommodation above. Located in the heart of Bloomsbury, and surrounded by rows of Georgian houses,  in true brutalist tradition The Brunswick completely excludes its local environment and dominates the environment with its bold straight edges.
National Theatre
Completed and opened in 1976, it received a mixed reception and Prince Charles famously said that it “looks like a nuclear power station”. Today the National Theatre is a must-see attraction for theatre lovers and those strolling along the Southbank. As much of a giant concrete sculpture as it is a building, the brutalist credentials of the National Theatre are strong. With its expressive and extravagant exterior and cave-like interior, it has a fort-like appearance made more notable by its presence on the bank of the Thames.
The Park Avenue J Hotel gives you the comfort, convenience and calm needed to make your stay memorable and convenient. Hotels near Bayswater, London are perfectly situated to support your visits to all of London’s top attractions and with restaurants near Hyde Park, what better way to start and end each day than with a quality dining experience.
Alexandra Road Estate
Located in Camden, the estate is home to arguably the best example of Brutalist architecture in the whole of London, maybe even the UK.
Aesthetically, the estate is striking and features unique concrete block symmetry and imposing facades. With bold linear angles everywhere you look, it’s a fascinating place to stroll around and sure to be like no other housing estate you’ll ever visit.
Get started on your planning for a trip around London’s brutalist buildings with accommodation near Hyde Park in London.
