Babylon - More or Less a Review

With a clear overdose of cocaine, a budget of $80 million dollars and film stars such as Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt's flat back of his head, Damien Chazelle's latest film tells of early Hollywood, the transition from silent films to sound films and, above all, lots of parties. What may sound like an absolute slay (for the boomers out here: triumph) turned out to be one of the biggest box-office flops of last year.

Maybe I'll be able to convince a few more people with this brilliant review to spend three hours and nine minutes of their lifes, not counting the short break and travel, in the cinema and then be haunted by Tobey Maguire in their nightmares for the rest of their lifes (if you know, you know) and improve Babylon's revenues at least a little bit.

I watched Babylon together with my mother on an average Friday afternoon right after school.

Outfit of the day was a green leopard patterned knit jumper, cream colored jeans, a pair of Comme les Garçons x Converse shoes and Nivea Natural Balance deodorant with a scent of organic green tea. Now I suddenly wonder if there is a difference in the scent of deodorants, whether the green tea is organic or not? Nevermind. Although, what would Fairtrade green tea smell like? Maybe I should write Nivea an email.

Now back to the actual topic: *drumroll* the film!

The film starts, after an elephant pooped into the camera in quite a detailed way, with a large and very chaotic party in a desert house. Already after the first ten minutes, it is very clear which direction the film will take. At the party we are also introduced to most of the important characters. Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), the kinda wannabe born star who wants to become an actress, Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), an actor famous for silent films (we can see where this is going), Sidney Palmer (Jovan Adepo), a musician on the rise of fame, Lady Fay Zhu (Li Jun Li), an actress and performer inspired by Anna May Wong, Lady Fay Zhu is being described by Margot Robbie as an absolute badass, which totally I agree on, and last but certainly not least Manny Torres (Diego Calva), who has always wanted to work on a film set.

My favorite review that I found on Letterboxd.

Let’s start with the good. The feeling and the emotions you get from this film are astonishing. Babylon is a bit like a roller coaster. The film is a very intense experience with all senses involved. It was both fascinating and unbearable for me, but kind of in a good way. The experience certainly shouldn’t be compared with Chazelle’s rather cheerful romcom La La Land. Towards the end there were scenes where I just wanted it to end and when it did I was very relieved. This slightly uncomfortable feeling you get is totally on purpose and that’s what makes Babylon so intriguing. Part of this experience is also the great music from Justin Hurwitz, which I think shouldn’t be overlooked.

The performances in this film are just beyond. Li Jun Li as Lady Fay Zhu was probably my favorite. *spoilers ahead* I loved every single scene of hers, her acting is so strong and you can feel her attention grabbing confidence even trough the screen when she enters a room. My favorite scene must have been when she saved Nellie LaRoy from nearly being killed by a snake. Margot Robbie was really powerful too. In one scene, Nellie is shooting her first film ever and she has to let a tear roll down her cheek, but they have to take several shots and she’s able to repeat it over and over. In this scene we can see how good of an actress Margot Robbie is. I also really seemed to enjoy that one scene where Nellie is looking for new sponsors for her future films at a party full of rich people. She starts to get really mad, because all these people are so arrogant and selfish and in the end she purposely throws up on an extremely expensive rug (it was giving me very much Triangle of Sadness vibes).

Now let’s talk about the things that I didn’t enjoyed quite as much. First of all: the length. I know that films are getting longer over time, but if I enter the cinema by four o’clock and leave by nearly eight o’clock, then I just have to say that the film’s too long. And I don’t want to say by any means that the film was boring at any point, but I’m not sure if this length was needed. The second thing I disliked was that we didn’t get to see anything from the relationship between Nellie and Lady Fay Zhu. This goes though probably hand in hand with making the film even longer. So I can see the point not to include it, but I still think that it’s a bit sad.

All in all, I think Babylon is a good film and is definitely worth watching, especially if you like the kind of razzle-dazzle film style.

Overall I would give Babylon an 8 out of 10 rating.

When I've been wrecking my brain over whether or not Genshin draws the correlation between dust and ashes, and I happen to look into Albedo because of his tie (we can... call it that) to alchemy, and even the art of Khemia specifically which is the much more ancient form of it, and there it is.
