Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Panj Piare
Hey everyone. I know I’ve taken a bit of a hiatus from doing these, but I’m back now! So I wanted to look at a story that really interests me: the Panj Piare. The story goes that Guru Govind Singh gathered the Sikh community together and asked for someone to step forward to be sacrificed. Eventually, one man steps forward, ready to die. Then the Guru ups the demand; he needs four more people to stand beside this man to be sacrificed. Soon four more men step forward. With five men in total, a sacrifice of sorts does happen, but not by ending their lives. Instead, they are initiated into the new community, the first five members of the Khalsa, the brotherhood of Sikhism. It’s definitely admirable to see that these men were so dedicated to their faith, and martyrdom is definitely a virtue in a community that Muslims and Hindus have both persecuted in the Indian subcontinent. I really like it, but again, if anyone has more insight on it or wants to correct me on a point, I’m open to hearing that. Anyway, have a great day everyone and stay safe out there!

Tomb or grave cover (cenotaph) with Shi'i inscriptions
Sycamore wood, carved
Iran, 11th-12th century AD, Seljuq Period
Many tombs or graves of holy figures in parts of the Islamic world are marked by a casket-shaped box (cenotaph) in wood or stone, although the burial itself is in the ground below. This tomb cover (sunduq) made of sycamore wood, is finely carved with Arabic inscriptions in angular Kufic script with the names of the Imams of Twelver Shi'ism as well as verses from the Qur'an (complete Surat al-Fatiha, 1:1-7, and part of the Ayat al-Kursi (Throne Verse) from Surat al-Baqara, 2:255). Also inscribed are sayings (Hadith) attributed to the Prophet Muhammad: "This world is the sowing ground for the next. The grave is the storage chest (sunduq) of good works." The names of the Panj Tan/Ahl al-Bayt (five special figures of the Prophet's family) are featured on the side: the Prophet, his daughter Fatima, his cousin and son-in-law Ali, and their two sons al-Hasan and al-Husayn. The inclusion of the names of the Twelve Imams identifies the deceased as a member of the Ithna Ashari Shi'a community. The casket is signed by the maker, Muhammad b. Ahmad, but the name of the deceased is not present.

Khamsa (also known as Quintet or Panj Ganj) is the best-known work of Nizami Ganjavi (c. 1141- 1209 CE) and without a doubt one of the most prominent works of Persian literature. Written during the last decades of the 12th century CE, the Khamsa of Nizami contains five poems and approximately 30,000 couplets.

Sequined wedding shawl from Bukhara
Uzbekistan, early 20th century.
Cotton tulle, couched sequins with silk thread, floss silk fringes
A Jewish bride wore a shawl such as this for the first time at her betrothal ceremony, usually held a year before her wedding. This symbol of engagement was worn over a brilliantly colored reddish-pink shawl, against which the sequined patterns stood out boldly. In Afghanistan both shawls, together with other garments, were presented to the bride by the bridegroom’s family before the ceremony, and she later wore the betrothal shawl for other marriage-related events such as the henna ceremony and the wedding itself. Married women continued to wear it on festive and ceremonial occasions only, also using it to cover the cushion on which a newborn son was carried to his circumcision.
The tulle net formed a large triangle on which designs were sketched in pencil by the bridegroom or another male skilled in drawing and calligraphy. The embroidery was done by one of the older female members of the community who specialized in sequin embroidery. The sequins (pulak)—silvered or gilded copper discs with a hole in the center—were attached to the net with orange floss silk threads and back stitched. The border of the triangle was trimmed with a fringed orange ribbon with sequins at its ends, adding to the weight of the shawl.
Some scarves had simpler patterns, with sequins embroidered over their entire surface at regular intervals. The number of sequins, their quality, weight, and mode of embroidery generally reflected the economic status of the couple. Unusually, this garment’s motifs unequivocally declared the Jewish identity of the wearer: decorations included Stars of David, seven-branched candelabra and Hebrew inscriptions, including the names of the couple —or of the bride only— or biblical phrases such as “Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a spring” (Gen. 49:22) and “the sound of mirth and gladness, the voice of bridegroom and bride” (Jer. 33:11). The phrase “Joseph is a fruitful bough” often appears on amulets and was considered to provide protection against the evil eye and help ensure fecundity.
The Jewish motifs appeared alongside local motifs likewise considered to possess magical significance: open palms with a hennaed circle at their center (panj), tree-of-life portrayals, almonds (badomche, boteh), birds or roosters, stars within circles, and jugs. Most of these motifs were believed to express wishes for long life and prosperity, while the jugs, were interpreted also as a Jewish motif, hinting at purity or at ritual objects employed in the Temple.
Net scarves embroidered with sequins were characteristic of the dress of Jewish women in communities in Bukhara and Eastern Iran, where they appear to have originated.
