1.3 Flamenco and Museo de América
On Wednesday evening, our professor treated us to an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life: a flamenco show. However, this was not your run-of-the-mill flamenco, rather a new-age, experimental version of the genre that combined traditional elements of flamenco with an avant-garde flair. The bailaor, or flamenco dancer, that preformed for us was Andrés Marín who is well known for his non-conventional perspective on flamenco. His dancing, for example, was what you would expect to see at a flamenco show, with the shoes heavily marking the rhythm as done in tap dancing. His singing was also what is expected of flamenco, reminiscent of an Islamic call to prayer, with loads of vibrato and variance. Even more impressively, he would do both at the same time without missing a beat!
Tumblr media
These traditional elements combined with his new take on the musical aspects of flamenco, with parts of the show edging on rock and EDM, reminded me of Rosalía, who is the only flamenco artist I had been exposed to before this show. Much in the same way as Andrés mixes genres, her latest album ‘El Mal Querer’ combines traditional flamenco elements with contemporary pop. I feel that both Andrés and Rosalía, although pissing off flamenco purists, are keeping the genre alive by giving it an update, making it more attractive to the younger generation who will one day carry on the genre themselves.
Tumblr media
Now having gone to a flamenco show, and having general knowledge of the multi-layered history of Spain, it appears to me that flamenco could be the marriage of two of the most influential cultures that make Spain what we know it to be today; Islamic and European culture. While most flamenco shows focus on themes such as love and heartbreak, joy, passion, anguish, etc. this show in particular was about Andrés’ internal struggle as an artist, coming to terms with his anti-contemporary take on the genre and finding his niche in the world. While his style is far from traditional, the story he tells without a doubt rings true to the art form.
Tumblr media
The following day, our professor took us to the Museo de América, where we found out that in Europe it is taught that there are 5 continents — not 7, as it’s taught in the States — which are Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas. Upon reflection, I remembered that the Americas weren’t naturally separated except for when the Panama Canal was constructed in 1914. I feel that the idea of North and South America being separate entities leads to the anti-immigrant mentality of “us” and “them” that could start to be erased with a change in the terminology that’s used to refer to the Americas.
Tumblr media
A critique I have about the museum is that in its initial section about the foundation of the Americas it uses letters written by Cristóbal Colón (a.k.a. Cristopher Columbus) about his trips, which is a polished version of the true accounts. Much like the teaching we had in America, in Spain Colón is taught to be an explorer who discovered the “West Indies” and the reality of the situation, being the genocide and erasure of the native populations, it is often times left out. I hope that before the turn of this century we can move towards a more accurate and honest telling of the history. On a lighter note, it was interesting to see antiquated Spanish before many of the modern day rules were established (to name a couple things, the word for “and” in Spanish, “y,” was written interchangably as either y or i; while there was an “h” in Spanish, at times it could also be represented by an “f”)
Tumblr media
The most curious relic I found in the museum was a cellphone-like device. I learned that it was in fact not an ancient communication device, rather a storage tablet for rapé, or snuff, a powder whose purpose is to make you sneeze. It seems strange now, however in the Chilean culture of the time sneezing was considered elegant.
Tumblr media
This first week has been an amazing introduction to Spanish culture and history and I look forward to what the next three weeks will have to offer!

Panama - A Great Vacation Destination
There are numerous exotic trip areas in the Caribbean that almost everyone recognizes, like Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, etc.-just to mention a few. Very few think about Panama as a warm beach area to go to. However, it is an extremely amazing as well as memorable sailboat tour panama.
Tumblr media
Although the coastline hotel we went to is not truly in the Caribbean (it gets on the Pacific Ocean side), the Royal Decameron Beach Resort uses a stunning gold sandy beach, the cozy exotic climate that one is trying to find, as well as numerous intriguing places for sight-seeing, the primary one being, naturally, the Panama Canal. There are the regular amazing sundowns, warm ocean waves believing the shore, many pool, impressive palm trees as well as manicured tropical vegetation within the hotel. The extensive Royal Decameron offers terrific food with 6 a-la-carte themed dining establishments, in addition to two buffet restaurants and countless bars and snack-bars. They have a disco, a gambling establishment, tennis courts, a health facility, as well as a near-by golf course-virtually every little thing a tourist can ask for. However sufficient about the typical coastline resort amenities. What's unique regarding Panama particularly? First and foremost, the background of Panama and also the Panama Canal is remarkable, and I am not also a background buff. I won't get into a large history lesson below, however the Panama Canal is a marvel in engineering and among the most significant rivers in the world. The canal extends from Panama City on the Pacific shore to Colon on the Atlantic side, and is 80 km (or 50 miles) in size. Over 12,000 ocean-going vessels utilize the canal each year, nudging their way through the narrow canal and rising and down in the different locks to make up for the distinction in altitude between both seas. There are huge systems of virgin forest on both sides of the canal. It is really a memorable sight to see the huge ships pass through the locks. It is a must-see when visiting Panama. Since the hotel we remained in was situated on the Pacific coast, we saw the Mira Flores Locks, on the northeastern edge of Panama City. A system supplies visitors a good view of the secure procedure and has an extremely fascinating gallery connected. We took the City & Canal Tour (at a cost of roughly $65 US) on which we were able to get a terrific excursion of Panama City as well as see the Mira Flores Locks at work. There are, nevertheless, Partial Transit Tours (approx. $96 United States) of regarding four hours in length which begin in Gamboa, located at the north end of the Gaillard Cut where the Chagres River streams into the Canal. Your vessel would go through the Pedro Miguel Locks and the Mara Flores Locks, where the vessel is lowered 18 metres in two steps, and also your trip would certainly end at the beautiful Flamenco Marina. Naturally, there is also a complete canal trip onboard the Pacific Queen, where you could experience the canal in close procedure. This would certainly be an once in a life time journey where you can really feel the sensation of going up or down in the secure order to obtain from one sea to the other. There is also a rail adventure offered where you explore along-side the Canal while sitting pleasantly on a train. Panama City is likewise worth visiting. The city is divided in between the modern, thriving mall extending 10 km (6 miles) along the Pacific coastline as well as the old area of San Felipe, an area of decaying colonial grandeur. San Felipe juts right into the sea on the southwestern side of community, and also represents replicas of houses of the 3 crucial cultures of the nation: the Spanish, the Indian and also the Afro-Antillan. The quaint design is lovely and in lots of areas is being recovered to its original splendour. The trip of the old district should not be missed out on. Situated in the modern part of Panama City is the Multicentro, Central America's largest shopping center with over 250 shops. Panama City is popular for its buying as well as supplies a large variety of product including footwears, handbags, sporting activities short articles, souvenirs, garments, china, etc. we were privileged sufficient to be able to stay for a night in the Radisson Decapolis Hotel in Panama City (a 5 * Hotel) which was attached by a pathway to the Muticentro. That hotel experience was absolutely memorable! The Radisson Decapolis used an up-scale modern-day space and also the dining was superior premium food (no coastline clothing right here!) The main eating area was unique in that it was 3 tales high as well as seeking out managed you a view of all-time low of the roof-top swimming pool above. As discussed, it was only a short jump over to the purchasing centre, which likewise organized a huge casino. Panama boasts a few of the best 'eco' sightseeing and tour in the world with the Panamanian Rainforest. Over 300 varieties of birds have been seen in a day, as well as Panama provides terrific bird-watching with varieties such as the iris-beaked toucan, the tangara and also the white-tailed sparrow hawk to mention a couple of. According to research studies by the National Panamanian University as well as the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the mountains of basaltic rock at altitude add to the rich variety of types. An excursion of "Intro to Birdwatching at Cerro Campana National Park" expenses approx. $78 US. On our trip it was terrific to see small vibrant hummingbirds sweeping in and out of the hibiscus blossoms, or watching various kinds of birds in the trees outside of our hotel space outdoor patio. We could not determine much of them, and I would certainly advise taking a bird book along on your journey for even more fascinating watching. One thing that would be a good function in intending a Panama trip would certainly be the two-centre holiday option-for a one week trip you would stay five nights at the Royal Decameron Beach Resort as well as two evenings at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. That would offer you both a coastline vacation and also the 'eco' experience. We assumed that would certainly be an exceptional holiday option, but sadly it is just supplied at specific times of the year (and also not when we intended to go.). Various other excursions that might be of interest are the Jungle Boat Tour (approx. $85 US), the Canopy Adventure Tour (where you could ride the treetops in an eco experience), or the Anton Valley Adventure ($ 40 US) where you check out a vanished volcano, a zoo and botanical yard, and also a crafts market offering handmade crafts by regional citizens. In various other parts of Panama you could go deep-sea fishing, take a sundown sailboat cruise ship, take place the Panama Express train to Colon, or go scuba diving. Simply put, there are limitless opportunities for adventure as well as fun, and also at fairly reasonable prices also. We located the people of Panama really pleasurable and companionable. Although Spanish is the official language, English is extensively spoken and also most of the times we found the residents spoke English so well that we could not choose if they were citizens or not. Panama has 2 seasons, the dry season (January to mid-April) as well as the stormy period (mid-April to December). It is best to keep these periods in mind when intending your trip. I would certainly likewise suggest taking a tiny traveling umbrella just in instance. They do not call it the jungle for absolutely nothing! Temperature levels are around 80-90 F (25-30 C) and also are relatively consistent year-round, although nights are normally cooler. The equatorial sun is extreme in Panama as well as care need to be required to use sun block. I also got sunburn sitting under the canopy on the coastline. Overall we assumed that Panama was a terrific getaway. We welcome you to take a trip there and discover on your own! Here is my best recomendation for your next sailing in san blas

Chile
I think Chile is probably much longer proportionally than your average chile, as I was able to ponder on the many hours I spent on buses just to get to the middle of the country.  I had a week-long stopover in my first hard-core desert, the Atacama, one of the driest desert in the world. Its very high up, maybe 7,800 feet. And spectacular.  Before, when I thought of a desert, I thought of endless sand.  I didn't’t realize that a place could have such geologic and stunning variation, not to mention all the amazing celestial stuff going on.  It felt like another planet at times, star wars-esque.  Or mars (whose soil is supposedly quite similar) .   I’m very proud to say that I avoided sunburn, unlike many of my hostel-mates.  I took a few tours to what was around and a very memorable, very difficult bike ride.  Included in the sights was flamencos, salt flats, beautiful lakes, archaeological sites, volcanoes, llama-like vicuñas, ostrich-like rheas, and crazy rocks and craters and crags. It was beautiful, and a good place to contemplate the craziness happening in the U.S. back on planet earth.
Then! To Santiago and Valparaiso!
I was over the moon meeting my friend Max in Santiago, we have spent the last three weeks together in the most amazing city of Valparaiso.  Wow.  Before I get into Valparaiso, a few observations about Chile in general,
-They love their dogs here, never have I seen such a happy and healthy bunch of street dogs, its an inspiration
-Chile is much more European feeling, and white looking,  than any of the other countries I have been to in South America.
-But incredibly, Chile has higher wealth inequality than even the, measuring by the Gini coefficient.
-Wine is cheap, empanadas are cheap, everything else is expensive.
-Trees in cities! Its been a while.
-People speak fast and seem to not need the second half of words, confidence in my Spanish skills have plummeted.
Valparaiso! A port city with hills covered in pastel painted houses, cable-cars and trolleys, and a liberal population full of poets, Valparaiso is called the San Francisco of the south.  This is one of the best cities I have ever been in. I would love to live here, and am so lucky that I got to be here for a month.
First and foremost is the graffiti. I think you could easily name this the street art capital of the world.  Street art is everywhere, and its really good, and of course there is tagging, its nigh impossible to have a good, healthy amount of public street art without some tagging.  I have never in my life walked so slowly in a city because of staring at the walls. I love street art.  Photos to come.
Food wise, there is a surprisingly large amount of sushi being sold on the street, and many empanadas. But mostly I was thrilled to have a place to cook again, and didn't eat out much. The wine is wonderful, and I have also discovered the joys of pisco, Max and I can now make a mean Pisco Sour, request it when I’’m back in the US.
Valparaiso is a port city, and has an interesting history.  It lived its economic heyday back before the Panama canal was built, and all the ships had to go around South America. Then the economy plummeted and its been recovering ever since. Not too many years ago it was declared a World Heritage Sight, which brought recognition, tourism, and some money.  But at the same time there are many here who are critical of money and energy going to development for tourists and the rich, leaving the rest of the city with a lot of poverty and crime that has been here for decades.  I have never been warned so many times to be careful and stay out of the ‘bad’ neighborhoods, which also says something about the very nice part of the population. Happily, and much to my surprise, I have not been mugged yet!
Its been a wonderful and very refreshing few weeks with Max, full of wandering up and down hills, making food, attempting to find good hiking spots, riding trolleys, and wandering around the colorful market.   Now I’’m on my own again and am preparing to head south, get out of the city, and milk some cows on a farm for a month.

Miss Universe, Part Two: National Costumes
I’m crushed, I’d written a lengthy, entertaining review of the national costumes and I lost it.  It’s my own fault, which makes it even worse.  Always, always save as you go. Geez.  Let’s try this again, even though I can’t remember any of what I shared.  I guess I’ll just dive right in. I’ve always loved the “Parade of Nations”.  At least that’s what they used to call it when the contestants would line up in whatever get up they were forced to wear, approach the microphone and shout out their country’s name.  ALBANIA! ANGOLA! ARGENTINA! All the way to Zambia.  It was like a ride through It’s a Small World but with better hair and Wonder Bras.  Apparently that process took too long and over the decades it was shortened and shifted until eventually it just became part of the preliminary competition the week prior to the pageant.  It was renamed the National Costume Contest and isn’t aired, though they usually trot the winning costume out for applause on the big night.  But we don’t get to see that magical Parade of Nations...unless, like me, you are obsessed and search for it on YouTube.   I wasn’t sure how to group these. Alphabetically? By continent?  From best to worst?   As always, some are glorious, some are terrifying, some are confusing, and some are flops. I decided to just jump in with my incomplete and random review, starting with my comfort zone.
I love traditional folk costumes.  They’re sweet. they’re easy, they represent the country’s history, and they can probably be passed down year after year.  They’re not show stoppers, but they’re not bad.  No harm, no foul.
Bulgaria
Tumblr media
Kyrgyzstan
Tumblr media
Korea
Tumblr media
Greece
Tumblr media
All perfectly lovely and appropriate. Angola’s is fine too, though highly flammable and I’m pretty sure that’s a snake on her head which is an immediate disqualifier for me.
Tumblr media
The contestants from the Caribbean, and Central and South America invariably show up as giant warrior birds.  Sometimes they’ll mix in a coral reef or a jungle landscape, but it’s almost always sexy birds. This year was no different.
Aruba
Tumblr media
Belize
Tumblr media
Brazil
Tumblr media
Ecuador (hummingbird or peacock?)
Tumblr media
Guatemala - I saw a chicken just like this at the Wilson County Fair.
Tumblr media
El Salvador
Tumblr media
Jamaica...are those the Olympic rings on her head piece?
Tumblr media
Haiti didn’t have access to as many feathers.
Tumblr media
Maybe because Panama used them ALL.
Tumblr media
There are always exceptions to the rule, and this year the pageant folks in the Bahamas decided to send their queen dressed as a pineapple.
Tumblr media
I wasn’t aware that pineapples were a big deal in the Bahamas. Now I know. Mission accomplished Miss Bahamas. Also departing from the big bird theme was Miss Venezuela.  Try to guesssssssss why I hated her costume.
Tumblr media
I’m sure that it was the best naked-princess-butterfly-holding-a-snake costume ever, but it creeped me out. Chile had what appeared to be a log on her head and a great deal of sod draped around her. Maybe Weed ‘n Feed sponsored her.
Tumblr media
Miss British Virgin Islands showed up with Red Lobster’s all-you-can-eat seafood platter on her head.
Tumblr media
And Miss Peru was the only one smart enough to put her costume on wheels, probably because she doesn’t have legs.  I guess Peru is famous for mermaids?
Tumblr media
There are also national costumes that require the wearer to carry a heavy load.  Some are supposed to be historic buildings or temples, others are giant animals. Cambodia
Tumblr media
India
Tumblr media
Miss Myanmar is a puzzle. I’m not sure if this is a drum or a dinner plate.  Her dress looks like a tree which doesn’t provide clues that make me lean toward one or the other. I’m probably way off.  Either way, it looks heavy.
Tumblr media
Miss Netherland’s hat doesn’t look as unwieldy as some, but it IS a ship.  It’s a nod to the Dutch history of sailing and trading and I suppose it’s even in that lovely Delft blue which is a winner.   I’ll allow it.  Could be worse, she could have a whole windmill on her head.
Tumblr media
That said, how about a moment of silence for Miss Thailand.  Girlfriend had to lug around an elephant and try to look happy about it.
Tumblr media
From the contestants bearing weight, we’ll jump to those who hardly tried.  Miss France stuck an Eiffel Tower pin on her panties and tucked some tulle into her belt.   Come on, how about a ball gown that looks like the hall of mirrors at Versailles?  How about a giant macaron hat?  Maybe a gown that looks like a Monet painting.  Seriously, call me - I’ll help.
Tumblr media
I just realized that those soccer balls on her shoulders probably have something to do with France’s victory in last year’s World Cup.  Still a pass from me. Then there are the costumes that I simply don’t understand.  Probably my fault, not theirs.  I’m sure that this neon shamrock and mardi gras outfit make perfect sense to the good people of Ireland.
Tumblr media
And this marching band outfit must tell us a great deal about the country of Mauritius, but I can’t look at it without singing “76 Trombones”.
Tumblr media
Finland is really Narnia? That’s all I’ve got.
Tumblr media
And maybe Germany is known for their lavish, Vegas-style reviews...I had no idea.
Tumblr media
I’m sure that this costume worn by Miss China really does have some interesting meaning and I’d love to know all about it - but the face freaks me out a little.
Tumblr media
I see that Miss Canada is carrying a big maple leaf, but I don’t understand the rest.  Again, maybe it has something to do with natural resources, or the different provinces...or maybe those are just hockey pucks.  I need a guide to help me appreciate all of these.  I’m grateful for the costumes that are obvious.
Tumblr media
I’m not a fan of Miss USA, but I certainly understand her costume.  She’s a rose.  The rose is our national flower. Got it.  I do think she could have leaned more toward elegance and less toward stripper.  Perhaps a slim green dress, sleeves embroidered with leaves...
Tumblr media
I think that Miss Japan is probably supposed to represent one of the popular anime characters that her country has made so popular, right?
Tumblr media
Another stumper was Miss Great Britain.
Tumblr media
She’s celebrating the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote in her country, bravo! But why the giant purple wings and emerald green flamenco dress?  I need to know the story. And Miss Kazakhstan looks like she took a page out of South America’s playbook.   Is she a hawk?  She looks like she’s wearing golden armor.  Maybe a mythical figure?
Tumblr media
I loved Miss Nepal’s costume, representing the Buddhist goddess Avalokitesvara, who  is a symbol of compassion and grace.  It looks like there are dharma wheels embroidered on her costume and probably more details that are meaningful but I don’t understand.  I like it.
Tumblr media
On the other hand(s)  Puerto Rico’s costume is almost scary. I’m guessing that it may have something to do with Hurricane Maria, or maybe Puerto Ricans are very, very proud of their giant hands.
Tumblr media
Gosh, I’ve rambled too long and I still have more to share.  I won’t subject you to another twenty pictures - maybe I’ll add them at a later date in another post.  I should probably just leave you here with the winning costume.  Here’s Miss Laos and company.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought that perhaps it had something to do with a national theater or traditional puppetry, but apparently it’s based on “the mythical Kinnaree, a half-bird/half-woman that features in the country’s diverse Buddhist and ancient Hindu-influenced alongside various tribal and animist spiritual beliefs”.  Got it. From where I’m sitting it’s pretty cool, and you can never go wrong draping yourself in gold.   I’ll wrap up this knucklehead review by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this year’s Miss Universe pageant.  Every gown, every costume, every question and answer session - fabulous!  I always pick a favorite gown, and this year’s is probably Miss Curacao.   There was never a moment where a gown took my breath away, but Miss Curacao got everything right - her hair, her earrings, and this gown are a trifecta of glamour.
Tumblr media
From costumes to crowns, there it is.  Now I have to get back to reality and go clean bathrooms.  Maybe I’ll make myself a tinfoil crown and put on some fancy earrings.  Won’t Mickey be surprised?

Panama - A Great Vacation Destination
There are lots of exotic vacation places in the Caribbean that nearly everybody knows, like Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, etc.-just to mention a couple of. Very few think about Panama as a warm beach place to go to. But, it is a very interesting and unforgettable san blas sailing.
Tumblr media
Although the beach resort we went to is not truly in the Caribbean (it is on the Pacific Ocean side), the Royal Decameron Beach Resort supplies a lovely golden sandy coastline, the warm exotic climate that one is looking for, and several intriguing locations for sight-seeing, the primary one being, certainly, the Panama Canal. There are the normal fantastic sunsets, cozy ocean waves washing up the shore, numerous pool, stunning palm trees as well as polished tropical greenery within the hotel. The all-inclusive Royal Decameron supplies excellent food with 6 a-la-carte themed restaurants, along with 2 buffet restaurants and also countless bars and also snack-bars. They have a disco, an online casino, tennis courts, a health club, and a near-by golf course-virtually everything a vacationer can request. Yet enough concerning the traditional coastline resort amenities. What's special regarding Panama specifically? Firstly, the background of Panama as well as the Panama Canal is interesting, as well as I am not also a history enthusiast. I will not enter a huge history lesson right here, however the Panama Canal is a marvel in design as well as among one of the most considerable rivers worldwide. The canal stretches from Panama City on the Pacific coast to Colon on the Atlantic side, and is 80 kilometres (or 50 miles) in size. Over 12,000 ocean-going vessels make use of the canal annually, nudging their means via the narrow canal and also rising up as well as down in the different locks to make up for the distinction in elevation between both seas. There are huge tracts of virgin jungle on both sides of the canal. It is really an unforgettable sight to see the substantial ships go through the locks. It is a must-see when going to Panama. Since the resort we remained in was found on the Pacific shore, we went to the Mira Flores Locks, on the northeastern fringe of Panama City. A system offers site visitors a good sight of the locks in procedure as well as has a really intriguing museum affixed. We took the City & Canal Tour (at an expense of approximately $65 US) on which we had the ability to get a terrific scenic tour of Panama City in addition to see the Mira Flores Locks in action. There are, however, Partial Transit Tours (approx. $96 US) of about four hrs in size which start in Gamboa, located at the north end of the Gaillard Cut where the Chagres River flows into the Canal. Your vessel would pass via the Pedro Miguel Locks and the Mara Flores Locks, where the vessel is decreased 18 metres in 2 actions, and also your voyage would certainly finish at the attractive Flamenco Marina. Certainly, there is likewise a full canal excursion onboard the Pacific Queen, where you can experience the canal in close operation. This would certainly be a when in a lifetime adventure where you can really feel the sensation of rising or down in the secure order to obtain from one sea to the other. There is additionally a rail journey available where you visit along-side the Canal while resting pleasantly on a train. Panama City is additionally worth visiting. The city is divided between the modern-day, prospering commercial center extending 10 kilometres (6 miles) along the Pacific coast as well as the old area of San Felipe, a location of decomposing early american grandeur. San Felipe juts into the sea on the southwestern side of town, and also represents reproductions of residences of the three crucial cultures of the country: the Spanish, the Indian and also the Afro-Antillan. The quaint design is lovely and in numerous locations is being restored to its initial magnificence. The tour of the old area need to not be missed out on. Found in the modern component of Panama City is the Multicentro, Central America's biggest mall with over 250 stores. Panama City is popular for its buying and also provides a wide range of merchandise including footwears, purses, sports articles, mementos, clothing, china, and so on we were privileged adequate to be able to stay for an evening in the Radisson Decapolis Hotel in Panama City (a 5 * Hotel) which was attached by a walkway to the Muticentro. That hotel experience was genuinely remarkable! The Radisson Decapolis used an up-scale contemporary area and the dining was top-notch exquisite food (no coastline apparel here!) The major dining space was unique in that it was 3 stories high and seeking out afforded you a view of all-time low of the roof-top swimming pool above. As stated, it was just a short jump over to the shopping center, which likewise organized a huge gambling enterprise. Panama boasts a few of the best 'eco' sightseeing and tour in the world with the Panamanian Rainforest. Over 300 species of birds have actually been seen in a day, and Panama uses fantastic bird-watching with varieties such as the iris-beaked toucan, the tangara and also the white-tailed sparrow hawk to mention a couple of. Inning accordance with researches by the National Panamanian University and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the mountains of basaltic rock at altitude contribute to the rich variety of varieties. A scenic tour of "Intro to Birdwatching at Cerro Campana National Park" costs approx. $78 United States. On our trip it was terrific to see tiny colourful hummingbirds flitting in and also out of the hibiscus blossoms, or seeing numerous kinds of birds in the trees outside of our hotel space patio area. We could not determine most of them, as well as I would certainly recommend taking a bird publication along on your journey for even more intriguing watching. One point that would certainly be a nice feature in planning a Panama vacation would be the two-centre holiday option-for a one week trip you would certainly remain 5 evenings at the Royal Decameron Beach Resort and also 2 nights at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. That would provide you both a beach vacation and also the 'eco' experience. We thought that would be an exceptional holiday choice, however sadly it is only offered at particular times of the year (and not when we intended to go.). Other scenic tours that may be of rate of interest are the Jungle Boat Tour (approx. $85 US), the Canopy Adventure Tour (where you can ride the treetops in an eco adventure), or the Anton Valley Adventure ($ 40 United States) where you check out an extinct volcano, a zoo as well as herb garden, and also a crafts market offering handmade crafts by regional villagers. In various other components of Panama you can go deep-sea angling, take a sunset sailboat cruise ship, go on the Panama Express train to Colon, or go diving. In short, there are limitless possibilities for journey as well as enjoyable, as well as at rather reasonable prices also. We discovered the people of Panama extremely pleasurable and also companionable. Although Spanish is the main language, English is widely talked and oftentimes we found the residents spoke English so well that we might not decide if they were locals or not. Panama has two seasons, the completely dry period (January to mid-April) and the rainy period (mid-April to December). It is best to maintain these seasons in mind when preparing your trip. I would certainly also suggest taking a small taking a trip umbrella just in case. They don't call it the tropical rain forest for absolutely nothing! Temperatures are around 80-90 F (25-30 C) as well as are relatively constant year-round, although evenings are normally cooler. The equatorial sunlight is intense in Panama and treatment need to be required to use sunscreen. I even obtained sunburn sitting under the canopy on the beach. On the whole we thought that Panama was a great destination. We invite you to take a trip there and learn for yourself! Here is my best recomendation for your next sailing panama

Panama - A Great Vacation Destination
There are numerous unique getaway in the Caribbean that virtually every person understands, like Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Aruba, etc.-just to mention a couple of. Not lots of think of Panama as a cozy coastline area to check out. But, it is a very exciting and remarkable sailing panama.
Tumblr media
Although the beach hotel we saw is not really in the Caribbean (it is on the Pacific Ocean side), the Royal Decameron Beach Resort offers an attractive gold sandy coastline, the cozy exotic climate that one is searching for, as well as lots of intriguing locations for sight-seeing, the major one being, of training course, the Panama Canal. There are the normal wonderful sundowns, cozy sea waves believing the coast, numerous swimming pools, marvelous palm trees and polished exotic greenery within the hotel. The all-encompassing Royal Decameron offers terrific food with six a-la-carte themed dining establishments, along with 2 buffet dining establishments as well as many bars as well as snack-bars. They have a disco, a gambling enterprise, tennis courts, a medical spa, and also a near-by golf course-virtually everything a vacationer can request for. But enough regarding the conventional coastline resort facilities. What's special concerning Panama specifically? Firstly, the background of Panama and the Panama Canal is remarkable, and I am not even a history lover. I will not obtain into a large history lesson here, however the Panama Canal is a marvel in engineering and also one of one of the most substantial rivers worldwide. The canal extends from Panama City on the Pacific coast to Colon on the Atlantic side, as well as is 80 km (or 50 miles) in length. Over 12,000 ocean-going vessels use the canal each year, nudging their method through the slim canal and also climbing up and also down in the various locks to compensate for the difference in elevation in between both seas. There are vast systems of virgin jungle on both sides of the canal. It is genuinely an extraordinary sight to see the big ships travel through the locks. It is a must-see when checking out Panama. Since the hotel we were in was located on the Pacific coast, we saw the Mira Flores Locks, on the northeastern fringe of Panama City. A system supplies visitors an excellent view of the locks in procedure and also has a really interesting gallery attached. We took the City & Canal Tour (at a cost of roughly $65 US) on which we had the ability to obtain a remarkable trip of Panama City along with see the Mira Flores Locks in action. There are, nevertheless, Partial Transit Tours (approx. $96 United States) of about four hours in length which begin in Gamboa, located at the north end of the Gaillard Cut where the Chagres River moves into the Canal. Your vessel would certainly pass through the Pedro Miguel Locks as well as the Mara Flores Locks, where the vessel is reduced 18 metres in two steps, and your voyage would certainly finish at the stunning Flamenco Marina. Certainly, there is also a full canal scenic tour onboard the Pacific Queen, where you could experience the canal in close procedure. This would be an as soon as in a life time adventure where you could feel the feeling of increasing or down in the secure order to get from one ocean to the other. There is likewise a rail experience readily available where you visit along-side the Canal while resting comfortably on a train. Panama City is also worth seeing. The city is divided in between the contemporary, flourishing industrial facility stretching 10 km (6 miles) along the Pacific coast as well as the old area of San Felipe, a location of decomposing early american majesty. San Felipe juts into the sea on the southwestern side of community, as well as stands for reproductions of residences of the three crucial cultures of the nation: the Spanish, the Indian and also the Afro-Antillan. The old-world style is lovely and in many places is being brought back to its initial splendour. The tour of the old area must not be missed out on. Situated in the contemporary component of Panama City is the Multicentro, Central America's biggest shopping center with over 250 stores. Panama City is popular for its shopping and also provides a wide range of goods including shoes, handbags, sporting activities write-ups, souvenirs, garments, china, etc. we were fortunate sufficient to be able to remain for an evening in the Radisson Decapolis Hotel in Panama City (a 5 * Hotel) which was linked by a sidewalk to the Muticentro. That hotel experience was really extraordinary! The Radisson Decapolis used an up-scale modern-day room and also the dining was first-class premium food (no beach garments below!) The primary dining-room was distinct in that it was 3 stories high and searching for afforded you a sight of the base of the roof-top pool above. As stated, it was only a brief hop over to the shopping center, which additionally held a huge casino. Panama flaunts a few of the best 'eco' sightseeing worldwide with the Panamanian Rainforest. Over 300 types of birds have actually been seen in a day, and Panama uses excellent bird-watching with types such as the iris-beaked toucan, the tangara and also the white-tailed sparrow hawk to state a couple of. According to research studies by the National Panamanian University and also the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the mountains of basaltic rock at elevation add to the abundant variety of types. A scenic tour of "Intro to Birdwatching at Cerro Campana National Park" prices approx. $78 United States. On our journey it was remarkable to see little colourful hummingbirds flitting in as well as out of the hibiscus flowers, or checking out various kinds of birds in the trees outside of our resort room patio area. We might not recognize most of them, as well as I would recommend taking a bird publication along on your journey for more interesting viewing. One point that would be a good attribute in planning a Panama getaway would certainly be the two-centre vacation option-for a one week trip you would stay 5 nights at the Royal Decameron Beach Resort and also two evenings at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. That would certainly give you both a beach vacation as well as the 'eco' experience. We assumed that would be an outstanding vacation alternative, yet sadly it is only provided at particular times of the year (and not when we desired to go.). Various other excursions that might be of passion are the Jungle Boat Tour (approx. $85 US), the Canopy Adventure Tour (where you can ride the treetops in an eco journey), or the Anton Valley Adventure ($ 40 US) where you go to an extinct volcano, a zoo and arboretum, and also a crafts market offering handmade crafts by neighborhood citizens. In other components of Panama you can go deep-sea fishing, take a sunset sailboat cruise, go on the Panama Express train to Colon, or go scuba diving. Basically, there are endless possibilities for experience as well as enjoyable, and at fairly affordable prices too. We discovered individuals of Panama extremely pleasant and companionable. Although Spanish is the official language, English is widely talked as well as most of the times we found the citizens spoke English so well that we might not determine if they were citizens or otherwise. Over 12,000 ocean-going vessels make use of the canal annually, pushing their means through the slim canal and also rising and also down in the various locks to compensate for the difference in altitude between the 2 seas. There are substantial systems of virgin forest on both sides of the canal. It is genuinely a memorable sight to see the substantial ships go through the locks. It is a must-see when going to Panama. Because the resort we remained in was situated on the Pacific shore, we checked out the Mira Flores Locks, on the northeastern fringe of Panama City. A system provides site visitors a great view of the locks in procedure as well as has a very interesting gallery affixed. We took the City & Canal Tour (at an expense of approximately $65 United States) on which we were able to obtain a fantastic excursion of Panama City as well as see the Mira Flores Locks in activity. There are, nevertheless, Partial Transit Tours (approx. $96 US) of regarding 4 hours in size which begin in Gamboa, situated at the north end of the Gaillard Cut where the Chagres River moves into the Canal. Your vessel would go through the Pedro Miguel Locks as well as the Mara Flores Locks, where the vessel is reduced 18 metres in two actions, and also your voyage would finish at the lovely Flamenco Marina. Obviously, there is additionally a full canal excursion onboard the Pacific Queen, where you could experience the canal in close operation. This would certainly be an as soon as in a life time adventure where you might feel the sensation of rising or down in the secure order to obtain from one sea to the other. There is also a rail adventure readily available where you explore along-side the Canal while sitting easily on a train. Panama City is likewise worth going to. The city is divided between the modern, flourishing mall stretching 10 kilometres (6 miles) along the Pacific shore and also the old district of San Felipe, an area of decomposing early american magnificence. San Felipe juts right into the sea on the southwestern side of town, and represents replicas of homes of the three most essential cultures of the nation: the Spanish, the Indian as well as the Afro-Antillan. The old-world architecture is stunning as well as in many places is being recovered to its original magnificence. The scenic tour of the old area should not be missed out on. Situated in the contemporary part of Panama City is the Multicentro, Central America's biggest shopping center with over 250 stores. Panama City is well-known for its buying as well as provides a variety of goods consisting of shoes, handbags, sports posts, souvenirs, clothing, china, and so on we were fortunate sufficient to be able to remain for an evening in the Radisson Decapolis Hotel in Panama City (a 5 * Hotel) which was connected by a pathway to the Muticentro. That resort experience was absolutely memorable! The Radisson Decapolis provided an up-scale modern room as well as the dining was first-class exquisite food (no coastline apparel below!) The primary eating space was distinct in that it was 3 tales high as well as looking up managed you a sight of the base of the roof-top pool over. As stated, it was only a brief hop over to the mall, which also organized a large gambling enterprise. Panama flaunts some of the best 'eco' sightseeing and tour worldwide with the Panamanian Rainforest. Over 300 types of birds have been seen in a day, and Panama uses great bird-watching with species such as the iris-beaked toucan, the tangara and the white-tailed sparrow hawk to mention a couple of. Inning accordance with researches by the National Panamanian University and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the hills of basaltic rock at elevation add to the rich diversity of species. A scenic tour of "Intro to Birdwatching at Cerro Campana National Park" expenses approx. $78 US. On our journey it was remarkable to see little colourful hummingbirds flitting in as well as out of the hibiscus blossoms, or watching different types of birds in the trees beyond our hotel area patio area. We could not identify most of them, and also I would encourage taking a bird book along on your trip for more interesting viewing. One point that would certainly be a wonderful attribute in intending a Panama holiday would be the two-centre vacation option-for a one week getaway you would certainly remain 5 nights at the Royal Decameron Beach Resort and 2 nights at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort. That would certainly provide you both a coastline vacation and the 'eco' experience. We believed that would certainly be an excellent vacation alternative, but regrettably it is only used at specific times of the year (and not when we wished to go.). Other trips that may be of interest are the Jungle Boat Tour (approx. $85 US), the Canopy Adventure Tour (where you can ride the treetops in an eco adventure), or the Anton Valley Adventure ($ 40 US) where you go to an extinct volcano, a zoo and agricultural yard, and a crafts market offering handmade crafts by regional villagers. In other parts of Panama you could go deep-sea angling, take a sunset sailboat cruise ship, take place the Panama Express train to Colon, or go diving. In other words, there are unlimited possibilities for adventure and also enjoyable, as well as at rather practical prices too. We found individuals of Panama extremely positive as well as companionable. Although Spanish is the official language, English is extensively talked and often times we found the citizens talked English so well that we could not make a decision if they were residents or not. Panama has 2 seasons, the completely dry season (January to mid-April) and the rainy period (mid-April to December). It is best to maintain these seasons in mind when preparing your trip. I would additionally advise taking a tiny traveling umbrella simply in case. They do not call it the jungle for absolutely nothing! Temperatures are around 80-90 F (25-30 C) and also are rather regular year-round, although nights are typically cooler. The equatorial sun is intense in Panama and care need to be taken to utilize sunscreen. I also got sunburn sitting under the cover on the coastline. Overall we thought that Panama was a terrific destination. We welcome you to take a trip there and find out for yourself! Here is my best recomendation for your next sailing in san blas
