hajji halal meat market and water store
There’s a food mart that sells Indian and Pakistani spices and groceries called “hajji halal meat market and water store.” Their building store’s banner is smeared off, so maybe they’ve been stationed in that plaza for a while without me ever noticing. Because I’m craving kulfi ice cream, we plan on taking a visit. It’s next to a salvadorean restaurant called Lorocco’s and in that same plaza is a salvadorean bakery called La Vicentina Bakery. My mom doesn’t like the bread at this bakery because it’s similar to Vallarta supermarket’s pan dulce. My sister Ari said the kulfi ice cream is made out of goat milk and rose water. The smell of it was unappetising the moment I smelled the ice cream popsicle for the first time. But it tasted amazing. My sister once showed me a tiktok video of an indian man making kulfi in his backyard—which i found lovely because ice cream is a popular summer treat that grants permission to be made outside in the sun. He used whole cow’s milk and milk powder for his recipe of kulfi. Last night, my sister offered me Rooh Afza, a rose water syrup that pairs well with cow’s milk. Ari said her boyfriend, Rocky, drinks this when he’s not fasting; his ramadan mubarak fast lasts from 6 am to 7 pm. Ari said that sometimes over the phone—ari and rocky sleep on the phone—she can hear Rocky’s mom telling him in Urdu that it’s time to eat at five in the morning. That’s a killer time to be awake. The rooh afza refresher revived me yesterday night, so this evening, I had more. Ari said cats are sacred in the Islam religion and it’s not minded if a cat ends up sleeping on a prayer rug. When it comes to the practices of Islam, I’m reminded of the television series, ‘Ramy,’ that I used to watch in my dad’s bedroom because he had a television, and I didn’t. Ramy, the main character, is a muslim who wants to be a better muslim, this time without sinning. One of my favorite episodes from season one was when imaginary / hallucinatory Osama Bin Laden visits young Ramy and gives him a lesson on strawberries. The objective was ‘How does america have strawberries all year long?’ In a season two episode, I loved that when it came to praying, the women and the men were split up. The women stayed in the mosque and the large group of men prayed outside in what looked like in front of a convenience store. I liked that Ramy had to take off his shoes for prayer, and I liked the Wudu ritual.

by Samreen Aslam
Salam everyone, as we already know the beautiful and holy month of Ramadan is here and what better way to celebrate it by trying out new easy recipes for your Iftaari? Here I’m sharing my top favourite quick snacks recipes for Iftaar which are very easy to make, nourishing and are absolutely amazing for Iftaar parties. Just like every year, you will be either fasting for 29 or 30 days, before celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr.
As Ramadan is here and we are waiting for Ramadan bazaars and special Ramadan discounts to buy your groceries. Also, a reminder; while stocking up on groceries, don’t forget the less fortunate and help make someone’s Ramadan a better one. More blessings and good deeds it will be for you.
I’ll be sharing 3 quick recipes:
Mini pizza bites
Bread pakoras
Mini Cheese balls
Mini Pizza Bites
Eating pizza in any form is always a blissful experience, why not add this blissful experience in Iftaar too?
Ingredients:
Cooking oil spray
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup whole milk
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 tsp chopped fresh basil
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1cup shredded mozzarella
1/2 cup diced pepperoni slices
4 Tbsp grated Parmesan
2 cups sauce, for serving
Steps:
Preheat oven to 350˚F. Grease a 24-cup mini muffin pan with cooking oil spray.
Add milk, egg, salt, herbs, and seasonings to the flour mixture, and whisk until combined. Stir in mozzarella and pepperoni until combined.
Let stand 10 minutes.
Stir mixture again and pour into muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full. Sprinkle Parmesan evenly over the top of each cup.
Bake until puffed and golden, about 20 minutes.
And enjoy pizza bites.
Bread Pakoras
Ramadan without pakoras seems to be impossible for Pakistanis. So what is bread pakora? These are simply bread slices dipped in spiced gram flour batter & fried. There are 2 ways these are made. First one is plain bread pakora and the other has spiced mashed potato filling in between the bread slices.
So these are basically fried sandwiches with a spicy & tangy potato filling. My super simple recipe will help you make street style crisp bread pakoras at home.
Directions:
Steam or boil 3 medium sized potatoes until just cooked.
Once the potatoes cool down a bit, peel the skin. I have used very few green peas which I steamed along with the potatoes.
Mash them up well with a masher.
Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a pan.
Add 1 teaspoon ginger paste, 1 to 2 chopped green chilies
Add the mashed potatoes, sprinkle half teaspoon salt and mix well. You can also add coriander leaves & squeeze in some lemon juice.
Taste test and add more salt if needed
Place the bread slices on a board and then spread the potato masala.
Cover with another slice of bread
Press the bread slices well to hold the stuffing properly.
Cut them diagonally. Begin to heat the oil in a deep pan. I used about a cup of oil for frying. You can shallow fry or deep fry. To a mixing bowl, add the below ingredients: ¾ cup besan, ½ teaspoon red chili powder, ¾ to ½ teaspoon ajwain ( carom seeds), ½ teaspoon salt, 2 to 3 tablespoons rice flour or cornstarch, ¼ teaspoon turmeric
Mix all the ingredients well. Then pour water just as needed to make a thick batter.
Check if the oil is hot first. To check drop a small portion of the batter in the oil. It has to rise slowing without browning a lot. This is the right temperature.
When the oil is almost ready, keep it to medium flame and proceed further.
Drop in the hot oil. Do not disturb for few minutes. If you use a large pan then you can fry 2 to 3 in one batch.
On a medium high flame, fry until one side turns golden. Then turn it to the other side and fry until both the sides turn crisp and golden.
Cheese Balls
These delicious crispy potato cheese balls make and awesome Iftaar party snack. These are flavourful, addictive and will be loved by kids and grown-ups alike. Cheese balls can be made in many different ways. The recipe shared here is super quick to make and the cheese balls can be deep fried, pan fried or even baked.
Ingredients:
Mashed potatoes 6-8
1/2 tsp salt
Black pepper (to taste)
White pepper (to taste)
3 tbsp. corn
2 tbsp. Capsicum
Boneless chicken boiled and shredded.
Steps:
Mix all the ingredients, make a shape of cutlet, place cheese block in the middle and pack the ball with light hand.
For coating and frying coat flour on the balls then dip it in egg and final coating will be of bread crumbs and fry at a medium heat.
Too much heated oil will break your cheese balls. Fry until both side turns golden red.
Comment down which one is your favourite and tag @foodatfirstsight in your pictures if you tried out any of them. Until then, happy cooking!

It was like a sexy accessory I had that no one else did, something that captured the eye and was whispered about just out of earshot (most of the time) but no one was bold enough to ask where exactly it was from. Or, this is what it had turned into, accessorizing me in intimate ways. In the ways I didn’t choose, it showed up as the large almond shape of my eyes that betrayed my feelings when I was annoyed, the prominence of my nose that wasn’t too big to be ugly but certainly drew attention to the middle of my face. It was the holidays I took off days from school but no one knew what exactly I was celebrating, or the mendhi that would adorn my hands in the days following, to slowly fade away. Eventually I was able to harness this to my advantage, almost like a convertible accessory. Between commiserating with professors who shared one of the many cultures I’d consider my own (the pendulum from Jaishi Krishna to Ramadan Mubarak to habari ako was one I rode often) to using these cultures as a bid for connection in friend groups, restaurants, the Dunkin Donuts that adorned every corner in Boston as ubiquitously as street signs, I reclaimed this accessory almost as though someone had been trying to take it away. Namely however was its presence in my romantic relationships. My other brown friends often teased me for my taste in white men, and perhaps that is a topic for a different essay; but without meaning to, or maybe subconsciously, I would use this culture almost as my own tool of sexuality, luring men with this heir of unknown - if they got to know me, if they slept with me and loved me and dated me and helped me carry groceries, they also got the added bonus of knowing where the fuck I came from. And truly, I feel this was as fascinating for them to learn as it was for me to share. Why do I look Indian/Arab but always go to Africa to visit family? Why am I wearing sarees when I post on Instagram but wear sweaters with Arabic puns displayed on them? Why do I know so much about shawarma and kibbeh, and why do I refuse to patronize Israeli restaurants? Also where does Iran fit into all this, and what on earth is a Memon? It was my deepest joy to answer these questions but also at times, due to a lack of fit in each culture entirely, to get someone to experience this “jack of all cultures master of none” with me. I wasn’t Muslim enough for the Arabs, too Indian for the Pakistanis, and quite frankly, too mzungu, too white for the Africans. Iran was hardly a country I could claim. Instead, I would dip a toe in each when needed, bringing whatever one-syllable-named white man with me, granting him a space by my side at Lebanese and Nigerian restaurants, knowing just enough to impress him but not enough that this became a boring experience for me. Ultimately this was not the thing connecting Matt or Kevin or Tom to myself, rather something I adorned us with. I was the dark exotic girlfriend, a role I took to graciously and happily. He would teach me what a casserole was and how to watch baseball, and I would share with him my spice cabinet and Indian desserts, doling them out in doses, keeping him curious and close. When inevitably each relationship would die, as they do so often in your 20s, this process would start again. In some ways this became exhausting but it was mostly exciting, my energy fueled somewhat by their curiosity, but mostly to have a partner in this disjointed, misfit culture of mine. Mine as one person, looking the way I do, knowing some of each language, laughing at jokes in Cutchi but not knowing quite enough to serve it back.
I realized later on that while this man was granted a certain access to culture through me, it didn’t mean this was overall a shared experience. That was the best part, actually, for them - dipping a toe in when it came to celebrations, clothes, restaurants, and traditions - but a little boring when it came to languages and cultural restrictions, and downright exasperating once we reached the point of politics and international affairs. “Well if we leave Afghanistan right now we’ll just destabilize the entire region! We have to be there!” “You can’t just not include them in the World Cup because they’re Israeli.” “I’m comfortable being next to you if you protest I guess but I don’t think it’s really my place to be participating?”, as if the children we dreamt of having together wouldn’t share half my genes, would have no identity as a Muslim to speak of. It was in those moments I would feel that deep regret of sharing; how dare you enjoy eating pani puri with me if you can’t use your voice for my people? You think the keffiyah is a cool accessory but don’t stand by what it means? These moments of stark realization would sit in the pit of my stomach, lacing up to my brain in the dead of night. “He’s not the one for you” I would feel it in my bones. But! We love beer together! He knows exactly how Muslim I am and accepts me this way, unlike so many of the brown men I could potentially date. There’s no competition of Muslim-ness between us. What do you give up, my dad asked me once. What do you compromise? What do you learn to live without? What connection is worth that exchange? Does sharing your culture come at a price? What is that price? Certainly more than a tray of pani puris.

Grocery Shopping- what to keep, what to leave?
In case you still feel like buying items individually by going to a physical store or order online grocery, we have compiled a list of the items necessary in Ramadan, to keep you and your family satisfied during the month. As the corona pandemic has been wide-spread, it is best to order online. Dates: No iftar is complete without dates. And you can’t just have one piece! The sweet fruit is the Sunnah for opening your fast is also very delicious and hard to resist. A lot of people like to add this to their mixed fruit bowls too. Other uses of it include making kajhur ka halwa or eating it with milk! Dates are very beneficial for your body as they are an excellent source of minerals, iron, vitamins and energy to keep you active.Besan: No Pakistani Iftari is complete without pakoray! While they are not as nutritious as one would hope, they sure are yummy! Just writing about it is bringing water to my mouth! And so, besan is necessary for you to buy during Ramadan. Keeping this in mind, all howmuch’s Ramadan packages contain this item. White Chana: There are so many ways to make chanay. Regardless of the recipe you use, this too is one of those dishes that is most probably found on your iftar table. Unlike pakoray, white chickpeas are very healthy and have a lot of nutritious value. So, instead of loading your plate up with pakoray, why not gravitate towards chanay? A lot of families also make use of black chickpeas, and I thoroughly approve as they too are delicious and very nutritious. Yoghurt:Have a scoop before sehri time ends and you won’t feel thirsty. Or, just have it as sehri! Use it in chana chaat and dahi bhallay. Yogurt is used in so many ways throughout Ramadan. And it’s a really good thing as yoghurt is full of benefits. It’s undoubtedly an excellent source of protein, probiotics and calcium. Someone who eats yoghurt daily develops a better immune system, has good weight management and reduced heartburn problems! Oil: Oil is an essential everyday item and is already used in every household. Its usage increases a considerable amount during Ramadan. It’s the substance used to fry parkoras, samosas, spring rolls, jalebi and countless other items. It is also used for making dinner or sehri with. Without oil, there are very few dishes in the Pakistani cuisine that you can cook! Rice: Many households like to have a very light dinner after iftar. Boiled rice is a popular choice. And even if you don’t eat boiled rice, you eat biryani and pulao, though, right? Eating roti for 29-30 days straight can get boring so buy rice for yourself and family so you don’t get bored so quickly! It’s great to have good food after fasting all day! There are so many different ways to cook, you can find millions of dishes that involve rice online, so why not make them? Have fun in your kitchen activities! Flour: Last but not least, is flour. You can’t have your parathas, roti and so many other forms of bread without this ingredient. This is such an essential ingredient of every Pakistani household that I am sure, even if I didn’t include, you would buy! Like all the products mentioned above, this too has been included in the howmuch grocery packages. So, sit back home and order the package right now!

The Need to Practice Social Distancing During Ramadan
After months of waiting, the blessed month of Ramadan is finally here but some of its celebrations have been dampened because of the coronavirus pandemic. No longer can you have iftar parties with your friends and family, enjoy praying Taraweh together in the mosque, and do anything that gathers a community as COVID-19 spreads from human to human contact. A lockdown is in effect in nearly all countries and people are advised to do all their shopping, dining, and other activities at home.
Given that we are observing the holy month of Ramadan, special groceries need to be purchased to meet the Sehri and iftar needs. Thankfully, best grocery stores are onboard howmuch so you can order anything and everything you want within minutes! You don’t need to go out and risk yourself to the virus.
Social distancing is hard during this month considering that Ramadan is the month where there are a lot of gatherings, exchange of food and celebrations as a community. This is why so many people are concerned with how to practice it. You can celebrate Ramadan while social distancing, it’s unusual, yes, but it’s also the need of time. So here are the few ways you can celebrate Ramadan while continuing social distancing:
Don’t Make Unnecessary Shopping Trips:
I have seen a lot of people unnecessarily going to grocery shopping because it’s the only way they can leave their homes and have some social interaction. I know these are horrible times, but we need to take precautions against coronavirus. You need to avoid going for grocery shopping every day, in fact, try to limit it once a month. Make a comprehensive list and buy everything you need in one go!
It’s best to just shop groceries online. You can select the products you want by browsing through an app, add the things you need in the card and order away. Howmuch offers delivery within 24 hours, so why bother going to a grocery store and risking your life as well as of those you love?
Avoid social gatherings:
I know a lot of people look forward to Ramadan because of Sehri and iftar gatherings. After fasting for the entire day, you get to fulfil your body’s craving for food and water with your family and friends. Sehri gatherings have also become a common thing in our society where friends or family decide to go to some restaurant or order in sehri. Yeah, both sehri and iftar gatherings need to be stopped for protecting the health of you and those you love.
You can, instead, have virtual gatherings. Technology has advanced so much that we can have everyone in the room even when they aren’t physically in the room! Get your friends and family on video calls and enjoy a lovely meal with them without endangering anyone’s life!
Online Donations:
Yes, it’s the month of Ramadan, and we all like to do charity because it is heavily rewarded by Allah (SWT). A lot of people also like to give their Zakat during this Holy Month but we need to keep in mind to maintain social distancing while doing so.
There are so many low-income families and daily wage earners that are suffering heavily because of the corona outbreak. Welfare societies come in contact with them and are great for passing on your donations. So, it’s best to donate to these welfare organizations online. Edhi and chippa are some of the most renowned charity givers who even send their representative to your door to collect the charities.
You can also purchase howmuch’s Ramzan package and donate it to a family in need. These packages have everything that an average Pakistani family would need during the Holy Month. Be kind to Allah’s creations and He will be kind to you!
