The sale of jeeps and pick-ups decreased to 1,390 units from 1,547 units sold during the same period last year. However, sales of tractors increased to 2,678 units from 2,254 units in July last year. The sale of rickshaws and motorbikes decreased to 73,588 units during July 2023 against 96,421 units in the same period last year.Indus Motors (INDU) posted the highest decline of 26% MoM to 1,368 units in July 2023 led by a 65% MoM decline in sales of Fortuner and Hilux.Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) recorded a decline of 19% MoM to 2,444 units in July 2023 led by a decline in sales of Bolan (-44% MoM), and Alto (-25% MoM).However, Honda Atlas Car (HCAR) recorded an increase of 61% MoM to 494 units in July 2023 mainly due to the low base of last month.Hyundai sales were also up 2% MoM, whereas Tuscon sales were up 5% MoM to 328 units in July. Amongst Tractors, Millat Tractors (MTL) recorded a decline of 22% MoM to 1,656 units in July 2023, while Al-Ghazi Tractors (AGTL) recorded sales of 1,022 units, up 20% MoM.Sales of trucks and buses were up 31% MoM, and down 29% YoY to 195 units in the month under review. Pakistan’s bike sales were down 11% MoM and 24% YoY in July 2023. Atlas Honda (ATLH) recorded sales of 62,000 units, down 17% MoM and 23% YoY. Higher bike prices and the low purchasing power of consumers are the primary reasons for the decline in sales. [ad_2]

What public health experts say about using the elevator (Washington Post) Even before the novel coronavirus pandemic, special etiquette ruled the elevator’s awkward confines: Face forward. Hold the door for stragglers. Chatterboxes unwelcome. Now, health agencies and medical experts are urging elevator riders to follow additional rules: Wear masks. Tap buttons with an object or knuckle. Avoid speaking when possible. If riders follow those recommendations, “there’s essentially no risk in an elevator,” said infectious-disease physician Colleen Kraft, associate chief medical officer at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. “It is a short period of time,” she said. “If you are wearing a mask and others are masked in the elevator, I don’t think it poses any risk.”
Trump, citing pandemic, orders limits on foreign workers, extends immigration restrictions through December (Washington Post) President Trump issued a proclamation Monday barring many categories of foreign workers and curbing immigration visas through the end of the year, moves the White House said will protect U.S. workers reeling from job losses amid the coronavirus pandemic. The ban expands earlier restrictions, adding work visas that many companies use, especially in the technology sector, landscaping services and the forestry industry. It excludes agricultural laborers, health-care professionals supporting the pandemic response and food-service employees, along with some other temporary workers. The restrictions will prevent foreign workers from filling 525,000 jobs, according to the administration’s estimates. The measures will apply only to applicants seeking to come to the United States, not workers who already are on U.S. soil. Major U.S. businesses broadly panned the president’s proclamation. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which had lobbied to soften the limits for months, said Trump adopted a “severe and sweeping attempt to restrict legal immigration,” which could hurt the country’s economic recovery amid the pandemic.
N.Y.’s Legal Limbo: Pandemic Creates Backlog of 39,200 Criminal Cases (NYT) The coronavirus outbreak is putting extraordinary stress on New York City’s judicial system, forcing lengthy delays in criminal proceedings and raising growing concerns about the rights of defendants. Since February, the backlog of pending cases in the city’s criminal courts has risen by nearly a third—to 39,200. Hundreds of jury trials in the city have been put on hold indefinitely. Arraignments, pleas and evidentiary hearings are being held by video, with little public scrutiny. Prosecutions have dropped off, too, as the authorities have tried to reduce the jail population. The health crisis has tested the technical capacity of the courts and their ability to preserve due process in an emergency. Around the state and country, local and federal courts are dealing with similar issues, installing plastic “sneeze shields” and setting up directories of remote proceedings on YouTube. No one has quite figured out yet how to bring the public back safely to New York City courthouses, nor how to resume trials and state grand jury hearings. Officials said the challenge of balancing public health and the requirements of the law is likely to persist for some time.
Seattle will move to dismantle protest zone, mayor says (AP) Faced with growing pressure to crack down on an “occupied” protest zone following two weekend shootings, Seattle’s mayor said Monday that officials will move to wind down the blocks-long span of city streets taken over two weeks ago that President Donald Trump asserted is run by “anarchists.” Mayor Jenny Durkan said the violence was distracting from changes sought by thousands of peaceful protesters opposing racial inequity and police brutality. She said at a news conference that the city is working with the community to bring the “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest” zone, or CHOP, to an end and that police soon would move back into a precinct building they had largely abandoned in the area. The mayor did not give an immediate timeline for clearing out the occupation but said “additional steps” would be examined if people don’t leave voluntarily. With scores of people camping in a park in the protest zone, Durkan said peaceful demonstrations could continue, but nighttime disorder had to stop.
Spate of shootings raises fears of a violent summer (AP) A spate of shootings over the past several days has law enforcement on edge, with some warning that a turbulent brew of a pandemic, racial unrest, historic surges in gun sales and a rancorous election year could make it an especially deadly summer. That increase came before the start of summer, when there is traditionally a spike during the warmer months as people venture outside more, and before Independence Day, which historically has been one of the deadliest days each year. Gun experts say the statistics reflect an American public increasingly stressed by the coronavirus that has roiled the economy and kept them cooped up at home, deep divisions over justice and policing, and the political divides of a presidential election year. In just the past few days, more than 100 people were wounded in shootings in Chicago, including a 3-year-old boy who was killed while riding in the back seat of a car with his father. Police said the boy’s father was the intended victim.
AP-NORC poll: Nearly all in US back criminal justice reform (AP) Americans overwhelmingly want clear standards on when police officers may use force and consequences for officers who do so excessively, according to a new poll that finds nearly all Americans favor at least some level of change to the nation’s criminal justice system. The new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research also finds there is strong support for penalizing officers who engage in racially biased policing. Americans are more likely now than five years ago to say that police violence against the public is a very serious problem and that officers who cause injury or death on the job are treated too leniently. Americans are largely united behind the idea that action is required: 29% think the criminal justice system needs “a complete overhaul,” 40% say it needs “major changes” and 25% say it needs “minor changes.” Just 5% believe no changes are necessary.
Powerful earthquake shakes southern Mexico (AP) A powerful earthquake centered near the southern Mexico resort of Huatulco on Tuesday killed at least five people, swayed buildings in Mexico City and sent thousands fleeing into the streets. Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said one person was killed and another injured in a building collapse in Huatulco, Oaxaca. Otherwise he said reports were of minor damage from the magnitude 7.4 quake, including broken windows and collapsed walls. The state-run oil company known as Pemex said the quake caused a fire at its refinery in the Pacific coast city of Salina Cruz, relatively near the epicenter. It said one worker was injured and the flames were quickly extinguished. Churches, bridges and highways also suffered damage during the quake.
E.U. May Bar American Travelers as It Reopens Borders, Citing Failures on Virus (NYT) European Union countries rushing to revive their economies and reopen their borders after months of coronavirus restrictions are prepared to block Americans from entering because the United States has failed to control the scourge, according to draft lists of acceptable travelers seen by The New York Times. That prospect, which would lump American visitors in with Russians and Brazilians as unwelcome, is a stinging blow to American prestige in the world and a repudiation of President Trump’s handling of the virus in the United States, which has more than 2.3 million cases and upward of 120,000 deaths, more than any other country. Travelers from the United States and the rest of the world  already had been excluded from visiting the European Union—with few exceptions mostly for repatriations or “essential travel”—since mid-March. But a final decision on reopening the borders is expected early next week, before the bloc reopens on July 1.
Verdant concert (Foreign Policy) Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house was reopened on Monday and filled to capacity for a special performance of the Uceli string quartet. However, the only humans in attendance were the performers on stage; 2,292 houseplants filled the seats instead. The concert was the brainchild of conceptual artist Eugenio Ampudia, who came up with the idea after developing a closer relationship with his own plants during Spain’s strict lockdown. “I think that all these plants somehow know in their inner being, in their cells, their photosynthesis that they have been at this concert,” he said afterwards. The plants will now be donated to local health workers.
Pakistan rejects lockdown measures (Washington Post) Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Pakistan have nearly tripled in the last month, and aid groups are warning of an increasingly dire situation that is forcing hospitals to turn patients away. Yet after restrictions meant to contain the pandemic earlier this year drove millions of Pakistanis toward hunger and starvation, the country’s government is instead pushing to reopen its battered economy. Government officials have called on Pakistanis to wear masks but rejected calls for a lockdown, fearing that it could force the country into economic collapse. Although government officials never ordered a countrywide shutdown, most Pakistani provinces were under strict measures until early May. At a news conference Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan said those efforts created “an unprecedented situation” in the economy that cannot be repeated.
South Korea in second wave (Foreign Policy) The director of South Korea’s Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (KCDC) Jeong Eun-Kyeong has confirmed that the country is experiencing a second wave of coronavirus infections. South Korea had largely banished the virus in April only to see a spike in cases in early May. “We originally predicted that the second wave would emerge in fall or winter,” Jeong said. “Our forecast turned out to be wrong. As long as people have close contact with others, we believe that infections will continue.” South Korea’s daily number of new cases is still relatively low: the KCDC reported 17 new cases on June 22.
Saudi Arabia: Hajj will see at most ‘thousands’ due to virus (AP) A Saudi official said Tuesday that the hajj pilgrimage, which usually draws up to 2.5 million Muslims from all over the world, will only see at the most a few thousand pilgrims next month due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus. The kingdom’s Hajj Minister Muhammad Benten said a “small and very limited” number of people—even as low as just 1,000 from inside the kingdom—will be allowed to perform the pilgrimage to ensure social distancing and crowd control amid the global virus outbreak. While the decision to drastically curb this year’s hajj was largely expected, it remains unprecedented in Saudi Arabia’s nearly 90-year history and effectively bars all Muslims from outside the kingdom from travelling there to performing the pilgrimage.
Kenyan fathers grapple with their sons’ deaths in police custody (Washington Post) Death at the hands of police or in their custody happens at a far greater rate in Kenya than in any other African country, according to reports aggregated by human rights organizations. Here, where the police and their victims are invariably black, racism isn’t the driver behind brutality. Almost all the dead are young men in the slums, where residents say police operate with impunity because legal recourse is largely unavailable to the poor. As in the United States, the government in Kenya makes no attempt at official, nationwide record-keeping of police brutality, a task that falls to grass-roots organizations whose fieldworkers are regularly menaced for doing their work. Their estimates range from several hundred to thousands of cases per year, including hundreds of deaths. It is a fate so common and the conviction rate for officers is so low—below 1 percent—that each killing tends to move from its bloody climax to numbing aftermath within a few days. In mainstream Kenyan culture, male grief is swept under the rug. Grinding of teeth is expected, but tears are not supposed to flow. Expressions of rage are met with shame. So instead of taking injustice as a call to action, many fathers suffer the loss of their sons in silence.
Ebola on the wane (Foreign Policy) Congolese health authorities are expected to declare the end of the world’s second-deadliest Ebola outbreak this week, as the 42-day threshold since the last confirmed case approaches. The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has lasted 23 months and killed 2,280 people to date.

Aircraft Crashes: accidents or murder?
The past nine decades, various fatal air crashes have spawned conspiracy theories that linger as haunting historical mysteries. Five cases produced official verdicts of criminal activity, but no suspects were ever indicted. The remainder are listed as accidents, but nagging doubts remain. These cases include:
July 4, 1923 Actor-pilot Beverly “B.H” DeLay and passenger R.I short (president of the Essandee Corporation) died while performing aerial acrobatics at Venice Beach, California. Time Magazine reported that half-inch bolts in the wings of DeLay’s aircraft had been switched with smaller bolts, causing the wings to collapse during flight. Gunshots of unknown origin had also been fired at DeLay days earlier, during a performance in Santa Monica. Journalists linked the crash to bitter litigation between DeLay and C.E Frey, a rival who claimed ownership of an airstrip purchased by DeLay in 1919. Several Frey employees were jailed for sabotaging that airfield, but no one was indicted for DeLay’s murder.
October 10, 1933 A United Airlines Boeing 247 aircraft travelling from Cleveland to Chicago crashed near Chesterton, Indiana, killing all seven persons aboard. Witnesses reported hearing a mid-air explosion at 9:15pm and watching the plane plummet into flames from 1,000 feet. Investigators from North-western University and Chicago FBI office concluded that a bomb had detonated in the plane’s baggage compartment, but no suspects were ever identified.
March 29, 1959 Barthelemy Boganda, first prime minister of the Central African Republic (C.A.R) and presumed to win election as president when France released control of his nation in 1960, died with all others aboard when his plane crashed 99 miles west of Bangui. No cause of the crash was officially determined, but suspicion of sabotage persists. On May 7, 1959, the Paris weekly L’Express reported discovery of explosive residue in the plane’s wreckage whereupon the French high commissioner banned sale of that issue in the C.A.R. In 1997 author Brian Titley suggested that Boganda’s wife, Michelle Jourdan, may have killed hi to avert divorce and collect a large insurance policy.
November 16, 1959 National Airlines Flight 967 vanished over the Gulf of Mexico with 42 persons aboard while en route from Tampa, Florida, to New Orleans. The final radar contact with Flight 967 was recorded at 12:46 am. Searchers found scattered wreckage with corpses near that point, but most of the aircraft was never recovered. Suspicion focused on passenger William Taylor, who boarded the plane with a ticket issued to ex-convict Robert Vernon Spears. Authorities surmised that Spears had tricked Taylor, a friend from prison, into boarding the plane with a bomb, thus permitting Spears to collect on a life insurance policy purchased in his name. Police later arrested Spears in Phoenix, driving a car registered to Taylor, but he subsequently vanished and was never charged with any crime pertaining to the crash.
September 18, 1961 Dag Hammarskjold, second secretary-general of the United Nations, died with 15 others when his plane crashed near Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), during a diplomatic tour of the strife-torn Congo. Security was tight during the tour, including use of a decoy aircraft, and Hammarskjold’s pilot filed no flight plans on the trip. Officially, the crash resulted from a pilot’s error in approaching Ndola’s airfield at the wrong altitude after nightfall. Many observers suspected a bomb or rocket attack. In August 1998, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, chairman of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, announced that recently uncovered letters implicated South African intelligence officers, Britain’s MI5, and the American CIA in Hammarskjold’s death. One letter claimed that a bomb in the plane’s wheel bay was set to explode on landing. In July 2005, Norwegian major general Bjorn Egge told the newspaper Aftenposten that an apparent bullet hole in Hammarskjold’s forehead was air brushed out of photos later published showing his corpse.
October 16, 1972 House majority leader Thomas Hale Boggs, Sr., was campaigning for Representative Nick Begich when their airplane vanished during a flight from Anchorage to Juneau, Alaska. Also aboard were pilot Don Jonz and Begich aide Russell Brown. The plane was never found. Begich won November’s election with a 56-percent margin, but his presumed death left GOP rival Don Young running unopposed in a special election to fill Begich’s vacant seat in Congress. Some conspiracy theorists link the disappearance to Bogg’s outspoken criticism of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover (who died in May 1972), but Begich’s children blamed President Richard Nixon, claiming that the crash was staged in a vain attempt to thwart congressional investigation of the unfolding Watergate scandal.
August 1, 1981 Brigadier General Omar Torrijos Herrera, “Supreme Chief of Government” for Panama since 1968, died with several others when his plane exploded in mid air during a storm. Slipshod radio coverage delayed the report of his plane’s disappearance for nearly a day, and several more days elapsed before soldiers found the wreckage. Florencio Flores succeeded Torrijos as commander of Panama’s National Guard and de facto ruler of the country.
October 19, 1986 Samora Moises Machel, president of Mozambique and leading critic of South Africa’s racist apartheid system, died with all board when his plane crashed near Mbuzini, in South Africa’s Lebombo Mountains. At the time, Machel was returning home from an international conference in Zambia. The Margo Commission, an investigate panel including representatives from several nations, blamed the crash on pilot error, a verdict flatly rejected by the governments of Mozambique and the Soviet Union Russian members of the commission filed a minority report claiming that Machel’s plane was lured off-course by a decoy radio beacon, set up by South African intelligence officers. Machel’s widow, Graca, remains convinced that was murdered. In 1998 she married then-South African president Nelson Mandela.
August 17, 1989 General Muhammad Ziaul-Haq, ruler of Pakistan since he overthrew predecessor Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1977, died with several other generals and U.S. ambassador Arnold Raphel when their plane crashed shortly after take off from Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Witnesses reported a smooth lift off, followed by erratic flying and a steep nosedive. FBI agents called the crash accidental, but persistent conspiracy theories blame a wide range of suspects, including the CIA, Russia’s KGB, Israel’s Mossad, India’s RAW Intelligence agency, Afghan communists, ad Shi’ite Muslim separatists.
April 6, 1994 Unknown snipers shot down a government aircraft at Rwanda’s Kigali airport, killing Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana, President Cyprien Ntaryamira of Burundi, and all others aboard. The resultant political chaos led to full-scale genocide in Rwanda, where ruling Hutu tribesmen slaughtered rival Tutsis, and sparked civil war in Burundi.
July 19, 1994 Alas Chiricanas Flight 901 exploded while en route from Colon, Panama, to Panama City, killing all 21 persons aboard. Authorities found evidence of a bomb, blaming the crime on terrorists. Suspicion focused on Jamal Lya, the only passenger who corpse remained unclaimed after the bombing. Soon afterward, an unknown spokesperson for a group calling itself Ansar Allah (“Followers of God”) claimed credit for the attack, but investigators could find no other trace of the organization.
July 17, 1996 Trans World Airlines flight 800 left New York’s JFK Airport, bound for Paris, at 10:19pm Twelve minutes later it exploded in mid-air, killing all 230 persons aboard and littering the ocean with wreckage offshore from East Moriches, New York. Despite initial speculation of a terrorist attack, the National Transportation Safety Board issued a final report in August 2000, blaming the explosion on a presumed electrical short circuit that ignited fumes in the aircraft’s centre wing fuel tank. Meanwhile, multiple eyewitnesses on land reported seeing “a streak of light” rising from sea level toward the airliner before it exploded. Initial examination of the wreckage revealed apparent residue from three different explosive compounds, PETN, RDX, and nitro-glycerine but authorities claimed to find no evidence of impact from a rocket or missile. Some conspiracy theorists maintain that Flight 800 was shot down by terrorists, while others suggest a disastrous mistake during an offshore U.S. Navy training exercise involving surface-to-air missiles. The case is officially closed.
October 25, 2002 Minnesota senator Paul Wellstone died with seven others, including his wife and three children, when his aircraft crashed near Eveleth, Minnesota. Wellstone was near the end of his campaign for a third Senate term, his death coming 11 days before the scheduled balloting. Initial reports blamed icing of the aircraft's wing, but that suggestion was later rejected. Federal investigators finally named pilot error as the “likely” cause of the crash, claiming that deceased First Officer Michael Guess was “below average” in proficiency. In fact, Guess had been fired from two previous flying jobs for incompetence. Jim Fetzer, a philosophy professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, published a book in 2004, blaming Wellstone’s death on unnamed members of President George W. Bush’s administration.
July 30, 2005 Dr. John Garang De Mabior, vice president of Sudan and former head of the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army, died when his helicopter crashed in southern Sudan. Circumstances of the crash remain unclear, and Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni blamed “external factors” for the incident. Foreign observers note that Garang’s death helped bring an end to Sudan’s long-running civil war.

Boost your Restaurant Sales this Summer!
In countries that don’t have really hot summers, people like to eat in parks and outdoors during the season. That’s not the case in Pakistan. June, July and August are the months when the sun doesn’t shy away from shining here, at all. As a result, the number of people that resort to air-conditioned, clean and cosy restaurants increase. Hotter weather makes people order light food that is less profitable for restaurants. A restaurant menu management software comes in really handy to update the menu fitting the season to improve the sales of these items.
Without an effective summer marketing strategy, small restaurant operators can greatly suffer. Not offering a good dining place can be a factor to drive your customers away from you. Your loyal customers might be willing to take their food in brown bags to the comforts of their home or cars, but without placing attractive promotions, you’ll have very little chance of attracting a new audience. Following are some of the strategies that you could apply to boost your sales during summertime:
Tumblr media
Securing your Loyal Customer Base:
Customers are the biggest asset of any business. You need to give a reason to your customer to keep coming back to you even in the brutal summer heat. You can put up a new menu, hold a special tasting for the new items, and promote loyalty programs with special offers for customers during the summer days.
Having a strong internet presence is a requirement in today’s world. Social media offers plenty of opportunities to promote your offers without costing you much So, use it to your benefit. You can partner up with soft drinks companies and offer free drinks with your food. Plus, you can create new, innovative beverages to improve your sales.
Celebrating Summer Holidays with Food:
Summer months bring a lot of holidays. From June to August, you get to celebrate father’s day, summer solstice, labour day, and much more. Keep these days in mind, and set up special menus, takeaway deals and make picnic baskets accordingly. You can manage all your sales in a better and more effective way by using mobile POS systems. In many countries, film festivals, concerts, and other entertaining activities are held to gather more audience. For sports lovers, matches are screened on big screens.
Special Summer Menus:
Summer brings a lot of tasty fruits and vegetables such as mangoes, peaches, salad greens, bell peppers, fresh herbs, etc. This means that you can create amazing, attractive and profitable dishes during the season that brings customers to you. It’s advisable to create some signature thing for your restaurant. For example, you can have “vegetable of the day” at your restaurant. Your customers will get used to expecting something new every day which will generate more interest in your menu. Also, make sure to upload a pic of the dish you create and share it on your social media! The more media buzz, the more sales!
Simple Desserts:
As we have established, summers mean a variety of fresh fruits. You can create simple yet colourful and appealing desserts with these. All you need is to chop up fruits like mangoes and peaches, mix heavy cream, add sugar or honey and spoon the mixture over a sponge cake or some server it with ice cream. Summer smoothies are hugely popular among people and could earn huge profits for a restaurant so make sure to have them on your menu!
Summer Entertainment:
It’s wise to book musicians, stand up comedians and other artists to attract new people towards great food and friendly atmosphere. Eccentric entertainers like palm readers, fortune tellers and others are especially popular among the elites. If you offer top-notch entertainment, then many people will just come to you for food too! And of course, you should advertise the entertainment you are offering heavily on your social networks to reach your old as well as potential new customers!

Apple unveils iPhone 12 with 5G, HomePod Mini smart speaker
Apple Inc on Tuesday launched the iPhone 12 with faster 5G connectivity, which the Cupertino, California company hopes will spur a wave of upgrades and keep its sales booming through the end of the year.
Verizon Communications Inc CEO Hans Vestberg said the new iPhones would work with the carrier’s “ultrawideband” 5G network designed to alleviate bottlenecks in major cities like New York and Los Angeles as well as in crowded areas like NFL stadiums.
Apple said all iPhone 12 models in the United States will support millimeter wave 5G, the fastest variant of the technology, as well as lower-frequency bands. Some rival Android devices support only the lower-frequency versions of 5G.
The iPhone 12, with a 6.1-inch display, has flat sides with a flush display, similar to the company’s iPhone 5 and a departure from rounded edges in recent years.
The new phone will have a “ceramic shield” glass cover to resist cracks when dropped.
HomePod Mini
Apple also announced a HomePod Mini smart speaker that will come in white and gray, cost $99 and be shipped starting November 16.
The new HomePod offers features like allowing use by multiple users in a home and sending information to car-based systems. For example, a user can tee up driving directions to a store after asking the HomePod what time it closes. Many of the features serve as a catch-up to similar offerings from Amazon.com Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google.
The annual launch event is nearly one month later than normal and comes as the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted Apple’s well-oiled machine for designing and churning out its biggest-selling product.
The iPhones announced Tuesday will test whether Apple can keep up that streak and ride a wave of consumer excitement around 5G wireless data networks, whose speediest variants outstrip their predecessors’ data rates multiple times over. Android devices from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and others have featured the new networking capabilities for months, and analysts say 5G phones are driving upgrades.
But Apple is in a delicate position of needing to excite consumers with 5G without setting them up for a disappointment. For many of its fans, it will be their first experience with 5G networks, which in the United States remain years away from delivering dramatic speed boosts for most consumers. Some analysts worry Apple will be selling a high-powered sports car while its customers remain confined to sleepy village roadways.
Shares of Apple fell 2.7 per cent on Tuesday, after jumping 6pc the day before, which added $128 billion to its stock market value.
Apple in January quit giving financial guidance, citing uncertainty from the pandemic. But despite waves of retail store closures and travel bans that delayed the development of the iPhone because Apple engineers were not able to cross the Pacific to Chinese factories as frequently, Apple’s financial results have largely bucked the pandemic.
In July at its most recent earnings, the company posted year-on-year revenue gains across every category and in every geography as consumers working and learning from home during the Covid-19 pandemic turned to its products and services.
Apple last month launched new watch models with blood oxygen sensors and updated its iPad models while also rolling out a new bundle of its paid subscription services called Apple One.
The company has also committed to introducing new Mac computers before the year’s end based on processors of its own design rather than those from Intel Corp.

Car loans hit record high of Rs326b
Car loans increased by 46.8 percent year on year and reached an all-time high of Rs326 billion in August 2021, thanks to low borrowing costs and a low cost of capital.
As reported on Tuesday by Arif Habib Limited, loans obtained by consumers to purchase automobiles increased by 3.8 percent in August 2021 over the corresponding month in the previous year, July. The substantial increase in auto financing “confirms that lower interest rates are motivating people to purchase automobiles while also favoring the sales volume of automobile companies,” said Arif Habib Limited analyst Arsalan Hanif. “Lower interest rates motivate people to purchase automobiles while also favoring the sales volume of automobile companies.”
“We expect this tendency will continue until interest rates on credit reach double digits.” As reported by Taurus Securities, new economy car sales grew 21 percent on a year-over-year basis in the first quarter of this year, while hatchback bookings increased by 48 percent during the same period. Additionally, the purchase of sedans nearly doubled in August, with a 98 percent increase year-over-year in the category.
In contrast, “new luxury passenger car sales decreased by 15%,” according to the report. Automotive financing accounts for 30-32 percent of total automobile purchases in the United States. Because a large proportion of Indus Motor Company’s customers reside in rural areas of the country, the company’s auto financing sales were lower than the industry average. In order to boost the dynamics of the vehicle sector, the government has lately implemented a number of new policies.

Mashood Khan, an automobile industry specialist, explained that the major goal of the measures is to strengthen the automobile industry by increasing demand for automobiles, in the same way, that other industries such as construction, banking, textile, and chemicals have seen increased demand for vehicles. “These trends are expected to continue through the end of this year.” He characterized the increase in car financing as a positive development for the industry, but he pointed out that there were a number of hurdles to the sector’s ability to function.
Over the next year, the automobile sector will experience problems in maintaining its growth pace, owing to a rise in the cost of manufacturing, an increase in shipping and logistic costs, and delays in the arrival of raw materials, among other factors. His request was to clarify the reduction in additional customs charges on raw materials and components imported by vendors, which the government refused to do.
According to him, “raw material for automotive parts will not only aid in the localization of car parts but will also aid in the expansion of exports from the country.” It was recently announced that the Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts and Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) and its equivalent in Mexico had signed a memorandum of understanding to pave the way for mutual understanding and cooperation. The local business people, according to him, communicating with the Mexican auto parts organization through the Pakistani embassy in Mexico.
He stated that the memorandum of agreement would be used by the local car parts producers to aid in the development of the local industrial sector. According to Khan, “the ball is in our court today, and we must capitalize on this chance and take full advantage of it by modernizing technology and enterprises.” “A relaxation of government duties, as well as easier access to financing, can help Pakistan’s car sector to grow even more.”
He asked the associations in Pakistan’s automobile industry to reach out to their counterparts in other areas of the world and establish connections with them. Mexico is the world’s sixth-largest manufacturer of passenger vehicles, with an annual production of around 3 million automobiles. “More than 89 percent of the automobiles manufactured in Mexico are exported,” he explained.

Your Tuesday Briefing – The New York Times
An outbreak in the capital rattles China
Some residential compounds in Beijing were under lockdown on Monday and tens of thousands were tested for the coronavirus as the government rushed to contain a new cluster of infections.
The outbreak has jolted China, after President Xi Jinping had said that Beijing should be a fortress against the pandemic.
Details: City officials said Monday they had tracked down 79 infections in Beijing over the previous four days, including 36 confirmed on Sunday. They appeared traceable to the Xinfadi food market, which was shut down over the weekend.
Disease experts said limited bursts of infections were likely to become part of the “new normal” for China. Still, it led to the firing of two local officials and the manager of the food market.
Pakistan’s hospitals are overwhelmed
A month after Pakistan’s lockdown ended, people who have the coronavirus are being turned away from hospitals that have simply closed their gates and put up signs reading “full house.”
Doctors and nurses are getting sick at alarming rates, and are also coming under physical assault from desperate and angry families. It’s prompting intense criticism about whether the government should have been more careful in its response.
Medical professionals now expect the virus to peak in July or August and infect up to 900,000, adding further strain to a shaky health care system that some warn may collapse.
Details: Before reopening, Pakistan had recorded about 25,000 infections. A month later, the country recorded an additional 100,000 cases — almost certainly an undercount — and the pandemic shows no signs of abating. At least 2,356 people have died of Covid-19, according to official figures released Thursday.
Quotable: The government “did not listen to what doctors were saying,” the Pakistan Medical Association said in a statement. “Now the result of this negligence is obvious.”
Breaking up with China is hard to do
The coronavirus pandemic has reminded many countries how deeply reliant on Chinese business they are, and some are trying to reduce their exposure.
That’s not always as easy as it sounds — especially during an economic crisis. We looked at three companies in three countries heavily reliant on China to understand what businesses are facing.
Australia’s lobster: Before the pandemic, 95 percent of Australia’s spiny lobsters were being shipped to Chinese partners. One third-generation fisherman in Western Australia said he tried quickly to diversify, but found that his only hope was rebuilding ties with China.
A German lighting company: The last time German industry faced a severe downturn, relief came from China. Olaf Berlien, chief executive of Osram, one of the world’s largest lighting companies, said that since then he has become more skeptical and worked to rethink logistics and supply chains.
Luxury bathroom fixtures from Japan: Toto, Japan’s largest toilet maker, makes what China’s nouveau riche really want: electronic bidet toilets with heated seats, warm water jets, pleasingly shaped ceramic bowls and automated lids.
China accounts for more than half of its overseas sales. And for Toto, the huge market and skilled workers are too good to pass up.
If you have 5 minutes, this is worth it
In Russia, migrant workers come last
As the coronavirus batters Russia, migrant workers from Central Asia have been hit especially hard — first losing their jobs, then often refused medical care if they become ill, and now unable to return home because of fewer flights. Above, migrants from Central Asia in cramped housing in Moscow.
The coronavirus crisis has magnified the inferior status of migrant workers. Desperate to get home, migrants have been banging on the doors of their embassies in Moscow. “Migrantophobia is real in Russia,” said one lawyer.
Here’s what else is happening
Philippines: The journalist Maria Ressa and a former colleague at the news site Rappler, which Ms. Ressa founded, were convicted of cyber libel by a court in Manila. It was another blow to press freedoms in a country where journalists have been threatened and bullied.
U.S. rights: In a stunning victory for the L.G.B.T.Q. movement, the Supreme Court ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, applies to gay and transgender workers and protects them from workplace discrimination.
U.S.-Russia spying: A court in Moscow sentenced an American, Paul Whelan, to 16 years in prison on espionage charges. The former Marine was arrested in 2018 after being handed a flash drive that he says he thought contained pictures of churches but was instead loaded with classified information.
Snapshot: Above, a barbershop in Rajkot, in India’s Gujarat state. From our series “The World Through a Lens” comes a collection of portraits from Gujarat, a place that defies easy generalizations, says photographer Michael Benanav.
What we’re reading: This list from Vox on habits that people want to keep post-lockdowns. More working from home is an obvious one on that list, but there are also some thoughts about less consumerism and slowing down.
Now, a break from the news
Cook: These chocolate chip cookies are about as adaptable as cookies get. You don’t even need chocolate chips — pack them with dried fruit, nuts or a chopped up chocolate bar.
Watch: Comic Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special “8:46” addresses police brutality, the death of George Floyd and protests. There aren’t really any jokes, writes our culture reporter, but instead “a raw accounting.”
Read: Take a look, or perhaps a second look, at Robert Frank’s eye-opening book of 83 photographs, “The Americans,” published in 1959. He had crossed America by car, seeing it as an outsider, a Swiss who left Zurich in 1947 in search of broader horizons.
At Home has our full collection of ideas on what to read, cook, watch, and do while staying safe at home.
And now for the Back Story on …
Confronting South Korea’s beauty standards
Frances Cha’s novel “If I Had Your Face” is an unflinching look at how four young women pursue their dreams and ambitions in Seoul. Ms. Cha confronts South Korea’s social norms, including its impossibly high beauty standards. Here’s what she told our In Her Words newsletter:
What inspired you to write a book about contemporary South Korea?
I wanted to write about the people I encountered every day in Korea. I have read “The Joy Luck Club” so many times that both my covers have fallen off. And reading it, I realized it was possible to have an Asian protagonist and explore themes like filial piety. I wanted to write a story about young women that is very specific to modern Korea.
Explain the connection between filial piety and elective plastic surgery.
Filial piety — “hyo” in Korean — is the age-old historical and traditional virtue of deep respect and support and love toward one’s parents and elders. To say “he is a hyo-ja” or “she is a hyo-nyeo” means someone is a good son or daughter, exhibiting and living by respect that is born of gratitude to your parents. I know many friends of my parents have lived with their in-laws for many decades, supporting and providing for them, despite the fact that these relationships are often strained.
The cosmetic surgery industry is practically its own character in your book. Can you help us understand more about the obsession with plastic surgery in South Korea?
When I tell people I’m Korean, people always ask if I’ve had plastic surgery. Plastic surgery runs very counter to American and Western ideas about remaining true to yourself — that you shouldn’t have to change anything about yourself because of anyone’s judgment.
But in South Korea, there are very real and practical reasons people have plastic surgery. I ask readers to reserve their judgment on that. The reality in 21st-century South Korea is how you look does matter, especially if you don’t come from wealth and status. Until recently, job applicants had to submit a photo with their job application.
That’s it for this briefing. See you next time.
