Dear Dadi

So it finally happened. The dreaded thought of getting a call at an odd hour about one of your dear ones leaving the world, sinking through the whole motion of coming to terms with the news, and then making the journey to say goodbye to that loved one.

I am glad that I got to see Dadi in November last year before she reached a complete stage of the shutdown. She could still muster a smile even though the paralysis had left her lower jaw moving to one side more. She was bed-ridden but she would try and walk around with the help of my cousin, Aman, and her four-legged walker. She would even scold people around for not letting her have her extra golgappa. She was such a softy yet so gritty. She worked as a teacher when most of the women in the neighbourhood of Pakri Mohallah, Arrah, stayed at home. She had an air of authority, yet the poor thing was always pinned down under the rein of her husband. She endured a lot, from losing one of her daughters early, then losing her eldest son (my father), not being able to be in touch with one of her daughters because of the strong-headedness of others, and then old-age slowly taking all her dignity away, caging her in a body that refused to carry on.

After her fall last year, she would always say that she kept praying to the Gods to give her Mukti. My Dadi was such a religious person. She prayed, kept fasts, visited temples, never touched meat, but in her last days, you could see that her faith was losing ground. She would often wonder what was the point of all the years of puja-paath she did. She had become a child towards her end. Well, she always was a little kid somewhere. She loved candies and you had to always share some with her. She was always the bechaari at Ludo, waiting for the dice to roll her out of her poor luck at the game. She had once slapped me because I was cutting her Goti (token) repeatedly in the game.

During my last visit, I could see her getting upset if you didn’t give her pakaudi soon after she had asked for it, even though her digestive system was throwing up anything spicy or carrying extra salt. You had to appease her and take care of her at the same time. It was nothing short of taking care of a child. She was so gullible when it came to watching serials on TV. She would get affected by the loss and struggles of her favourite characters in the show, and chide away at the vamps of these shows. She believed in the goodness of others because she was a good person herself. My Dadi was a teacher, leader, carer, and sponge ball of goodness. Thank you for all the Panchatantra stories, and for never losing patience with me when I used to pester you over why Hanuman Ji’s cheeks were inflated all the time.
