How the Blue Angels convinced Tom Cruise to make the movie "Top Gun"

It's hard to imagine a world without the Top Gun movie. Aviation lovers watch at least once a year, despite the banality of the 80s, because the flight scenes are as cool now as they were more than 30 years ago. The best talents were hired to ensure a successful production, but the star of the film needed to be convinced by the Blue Angels to finally decide to become Maverick.
In another fantastic interview with Ryan Notthaft on Blue Angel Phantoms on YouTube, the Blue Angel pilot who piloted Tom Cruise, Curt "Griz" Watson, talks about his experience.

When reading the script alone, Cruise didn't find it funny. He was a serious actor who was still standing out, and there was a lot of apprehension about how the audience would receive an aviation film. Because the truth is that no aviation movie was really a big box office success before Top Gun.
But the producers knew they had a winner. They considered Top Gun as "Star Wars on Earth", inspired by a story years earlier in California Magazine. But Cruise initially did not share his vision, nor did many producers before Paramount. They had no real characters or stories, just cool jets.
"When I first read it, I thought they had a very limited story and script," Cruise recalled in an old behind-the-scenes article about the production of the film, which you can watch at this link. "I thought so, I don't know about it."
In a final desperate attempt to convince Cruise to join, producer Jerry Bruckheimer called Navy Admiral Peter Garrow, asking Cruise of the Navy to convince him to make the film. Garrow, of course, called the Blues Angels with the orders.
Grizz exceeded Cruise's expectations very well on the team's No. 7 jet, an A-4 Skyhawk. With a bag full of vomit, Cruise was hooked and his love affair with aviation began. When he landed he walked to the nearest public phone, called Bruckheimer and said "I do this".
But he was not satisfied only with the flight on the A-4 of the Blue Angels. After all, Mav is an F-14 Tomcat pilot. So Cruise requested flight time on the F-14 as part of his character's development. What made perfect sense. Cruise even put this in his contract. The producers and the Navy happily accommodated him.

His first F-14 flight also hit him in the head. Your pilot, indicative of call Bozo, put him in a difficult situation. You can watch the interview above about some of these flights, or better yet, watch the video here where Cruise and Bozo talk about it.
He loved piloting the F-14 so much that he even told his pilots "let's film these scenes and then tear everything apart. I'll evaluate you about who is the best driver." Each pilot wanted to know how his other pilots fared and then competed to see who could kick Tom's ass harder.
Cruise has been in love with flying since then. He is now a talented pilot, certified for various types of aircraft. He also owns a World War II P-51 Mustang fighter.

I don’t know they are my second house, third or fourth. But i know they was humble and care with everyone. Yaaa pertemuan awal kita dengan mba dewi dan mba vania di kos ini, kos putri Pak Reno Delanggu Klaten. Pertemuan kita yang cukup singkat bahkan menurut ku itu sangat sangat sangat singkat hmm.
Awal Mei 2023 di semester 8 ini ada tugas pre klinik yang harus aku dan teman teman ku selesaikan, dan kita ber 6 dapat tempat pre-klinik di RSU PKU Muhammadiyah Delanggu Klaten, yang dimana antara kampus dengan tempat ini cukup lumayan jauh dan tidak memungkinkan kita untuk pulang balik takutnya juga shift malam dan banyak resiko di jalan nantinya. Pada akhirnya kita ber-5 memutuskan untuk cari kost di sekitar RS dan salah satu temen ku Ayunda namanya menemukan kost ini, kost putri milik Pak Reno. Yaaa di sinilah awal pertemuan kita, fyi mba dewi yang pakai paju kuning, dan mba vania pake jilbab navy.
Pertama kali kita pindah ke kost ini disambut baik sama mba vania yang bukakan pagar untuk kita, btw pagar kost kita itu unik wkwk, ga ada gemboknya tapi bisa dikunci dan hanya orang dalam aja yg bisa buka, kalo dari pintu luar ga akan bisa dibuka aneh yaa wkwk. Disitu lah mulai basa basi antara ibu Arini dan mba vania (kebetulan waktu pertama ke kost Arini diantar ibunya), dari basa basi itu kita tau ternyata mba vania kerja di RS tempat kita praktik. Dan mba dewi adalah mahasiswa lulusan IPB yang kerja di salah satu perusahaan yang ada di Delanggu Klaten.
Seiring berjalannya waktu kita sering bertegur sapa seperti, “hari ini shift apa, si ini kemana?, mba mau berangkat kerja?, masak apa hari ini?, kalian mau kemana?, mba mau ikut gaa?, mau pulang ya mba?” Dan masih banyak lagi awal percakapan setiap harinya. Hal seperti itulah yang membuat kehidupan kost menjadi hangat.
Banyak banget cerita di kost ini sepeti ada tetangga yang setiap hari karaoke di depan rumahnya yang kenceng banget suaranya, lumayan menganggu sih menurut ku tapi mba dewi si paling berani ngomong ke Pak kost untuk menegur gitu wkwk, dan setelah di tegur mulai lah suara musik dan karaoke nya lebih rendah hehe.
Waktu berlalu begitu cepat kali ini. Sampai suatu ketika beberapa hari sebelum kita selesai mba vania ngajak main bareng yang rencananya di hari terakhir kita jaga tanggal 10 malamnya, tapi ternyata pada hari H ada beberapa keperluan yang membuat rencana kita tidak kesampaian. Untuk menggantikan rencana awal jadinya kita foto bersama di depan kost ini, dan di atas hasil fotonya hihi.
Satu bulan lebih telah berlalu kurang lebih tepatnya 34 hari aku dan kawan-kawan ku melaksanakan pre klinik dan tinggal di kos ini. Sedih rasanya udah merasa nyaman di tempat ini dan harus melanjutkan hidup lagi dengan kembali ke kampus. “Life must go on!People come and go itu hal yang biasa” iya biasa memang tapi tetep sedih juga huhu… :( . Sekian cerita dari kost Pak Reno kali ini, seru sekalii dan hangat sekali, sampai jumpa lagi kakak kakak baru kami…

Selesainya sembahyang Haris berpamitan kepada Juwita, "Ta ono sing jemput?" tanya Haris kepada Juwita yang masih mengenakan sepatu warna coklat muda. "Aku naik gocar Mas, Yen arep ndhisiki ya orapopo," jawab Juwita. "Yowes aku ndhisiki ya, Assalamualaikum," pamit Haris dipikulnya ransel berwarna Navy ke pundaknya.
Perjalanan Haris lumayan ajan menempuh 30 menit dari stasiun, dibawanya oleh-oleh dari Semarang untuk keluarga di rumah. Perpulangannya kali ini untuk menghadiri kakaknya yang akan menikah esok hari. Ada rasa gelisah dalam hatinya karena dia tahu setelah ini dia akan menjadi sasaran empuk keluarga besar dan tegangganya yang akan bertanya 'Kapan nyusul Masmu?' Pertanyaan basa basi yang memang basi.
"Pak, Mas Haris wes teko," ucap adik bungsunya yang lari menghampirinya. Dilihatnya ada tentengan tahu bakso semarang Bu Pudji "loh kamu gak dari Jakarta tah? Kok oleh-olehe Semarang? Tau gitu aku titip Bloomery Mas," ditariknya oleh-oleh itu dari tangannya. "Mbekan tekan, wes nesu-nesu gara-gara oleh-oleh. Pie toh Li," jawab Haris pada adiknya Lili.
Haris melihat Bapak di depan pintu, ia menghampiri Bapak dan salim serta memeluk Bapaknya "Sehat Pak?","Sehat Ris, kowe mesthi pegel. Wis kana turu ing kamarmu," ucap Bapak Haris sambil mengusap kepalanya.
Haris menuju kamarnya, dibukanya pintu kamar itu. Masih sama seperti dulu tata letaknya, kasur single ukuran 120 x 200 dengan lemari dua pintu yang ada disampingnya serta meja belajar di samping pintu. Bahkan masih ada dua foto wanita favoritnya di atas meja belajar, foto pertama yaitu foto bersama Ibunya saat dia di Bromo dan foto Ratih yang dulu pernah menemaninya selama 10 tahun sejak ia sekolah hingga Haris bekerja di Jakarta, foto itu saat Haris dan Ratih wisuda.
Ditatapnya foto Ratih, sedikit rindu dibenaknya. Bagaimana caranya Haris bisa melupakan Ratih yang sudah menemaninya 10 tahun. Ratih yang kala itu mendukung Haris untuk menjadi Ketua Osis, Ratih juga yang membantu Haris untuk mengambil kuliah di Teknik Sipil di Universitas Brawijaya. Ratih juga yang mendukungnya untuk Haris dapat berkarir ke Jakarta. Semua sudut Kota Malang ada kenangannya bersama Ratih. Tempat favorit mereka adalah Kedai Payung Biru yang letaknya 500 meter dari sekolah.
Haris membuka laci yang terdapat kotak coklat berukuran 20 cm x 20 cm. Terdapat sepucuk surat terakhir dari Ratih untuknya serta semua barang-barang pemberiannya untuk Ratih. Mulai dari jepitan berwarna ungu, gantungan kunci, buku diari Ratih, baju kembar mereka berwarna biru dengan garis-garis putih berukuran S, sepatu flatshoes hitam ukuran 37 milik Ratih, dan foto-foto mereka bersama. Dibacanya surat itu lagi 'Haris aku pergi karna pilihanmu, mungkin cintaku sudah habis untukmu. Aku pergi karna kau yang ingin, aku tahu ini sulit bagi kita berdua. Namun ku doakan kau menemukan seseorang yang jauh lebih baik dariku. Tapi percayalah kamu adalah orang yang pertama dihidupku yang membuat hidupku jauh berwarna. Ku kembalikan semua ini, buang saja jika kamu tak sanggup menerimanya atau bahkan bakar saja. Biar semua kenangan kita pun terbakar.' Tulisan itu masih terbaca 70%.
Ternyata Ratih salah, Haris terus menyimpan semua ini hingga rasanya tak sanggup ia lupakan. 'Tok-tok' ketukan dari pintu kamarnya. Dibuka pintu kamarnya ternyata ponakan Haris yang jahil mengetuk dengan sengaja mengganggu Haris yang sedang bernostalgia.
"Pak le, ayo ke Indomaret," ucap ponakannya yang mematahkan nostalgia Haris bersama Ratih. "Ayo, Pak le jupuk motor dhisik yo," jawabnya sambil ke arah pintu depan mencari kunci motor dan mengambil motor di garasi samping.

Lockheed Martin, under contract with Northrop Grumman for the U.S. Navy's E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, delivered the 75º APY-9 radar that provides the U.S. Navy with information mastery through revolutionary sensor capability. More Hawkeyes were built and delivered than any other AEW platform in the world.
“As the primary sensor of the E-2D, the APY-9 radar has a long legacy of providing agile deterrence for greater security of the 21st century,” said Chandra Marshall, vice president of radar systems and sensors business at Lockheed Martin. “Our main focus is to bring our military and women home safely, and the APY-9 sets this standard for all other AEW radars.”
The newest Advanced Hawkeye variant is at the forefront of technological capacity, largely due to Lockheed Martin's APY-9 radar. The E-2 built by Northrop Grumman has become known as the "fleet eyes" of the U.S. Navy due to its ability to simultaneously monitor the air, land and sea. Whenever a Navy aircraft carrier has aircraft in the air, there is an APY-9 radar in operation, protecting the United States and its allies.

The U.S. Navy financed 80 of the 86 aircraft of the current purchase program. Japan bought 18 E-2D Hawkeyes and France bought three. With U.S. and international demand, APY-9 is expected to be in production by the end of the 2020s, and in modernization and support by the 2040s.
Lockheed Martin is a contributor to the E-2D built by Northrop Grumman for more than two decades. The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye platform provides critical and actionable data to enable decision mastery for joint forces and rescuers. These advances provide the armed forces with the necessary situational awareness to reduce the time between initial consciousness and active involvement.
