Sometimes, Deb thinks there’s something wrong with her, like there’s a sickness that’s rotting her from the inside out. She can’t find the root of it, which means she can’t cut it out to purge it from her system. For a long time, that’s the truth—that she can’t identify what it is that makes her look within. She doesn’t like self-reflection, never has, but there are times where her even own thoughts disturb her, and that’s saying a lot with her profession.

Still, she goes on with her life because she can’t just fucking put a hold on everything because she feels like something is wrong with her. Life doesn’t work that way. Besides, there is always another killer to occupy her mind, another body to lose herself to.

The one thing that never changes, her one constant, is her big brother, Dexter.

Deb isn’t sure what she’d do without him. He’s all she has left, the most important person in her life since their father died. None of the men in her life have ever come close to taking that spot. Well, one did come close, too close. She’d rather not think of him—of how blind she was to his nature. The men she has shacked up with in the past will never come close to Dexter. Even if she finds the one, he’ll still be the most important person in her life, even if she’s not his.

Dex has a family of his own, and she is just his clingy little sister—she’s not blind to that, but Dexter isn’t a dick. He wouldn’t just abandon her just because he has a new family. Before them, it was just her. Dex won’t be so quick to forget that because their dad raised a good man out of him. She takes comfort in that.

It’s horrible when Rita dies. Dexter falls apart, and she sees just how deep he spirals. It’s hard not to with the way he pulls away, more than he usually does. Deb falls apart too—falls right into bed with Joey. A mistake that escalates further and further out of her control. Luckily, Dexter is there to help her sort out that mess. He always knows just what to do, the right words to say— most of the time, that is, but he’s human too—and she knows that no one will come close to Dexter in her life.

The realization creeps up on her without permission. She has no partner to be her lookout, just herself and all her thoughts, wicked or not. Her therapist needles her into it, poking and prodding at all of Deb’s innermost thoughts and feelings; pointed looks, strategic silences, and leading questions until it all suddenly becomes clear.

These thoughts—these feelings—been growing within her for years—god, how was she so fucking blind to that—and Deb doesn't even know when they began.

How fucked up is that? That she didn't realize how her love for Dexter grew and expanded into something sick and twisted.

Since Deb can remember, he's always been there. She doesn't think much has changed between them or that her feelings have evolved so out of her control that she didn't realize she had fallen in love with her brother, which means that this realization has been a long time coming.

Somehow, she manages to get home safely, her mind a buzzing, taunting thing as she evaluates each and every interaction she's ever had with Dex. No stone goes unturned as she goes through the motions of her typical night. Steak and beer taste bland in her mouth, and the TV is just background noise. She doesn't change out of her day clothes as she slips into her bed, staring aimlessly at the ceiling above her until her eyelids become too heavy to keep open.

“Deb,” a voice beckons her, drawing out her single syllable nickname in a provocative manner. “Debra, open your eyes,” he commands, and she heeds it immediately.

Hazel eyes meet her own.

She blinks; the vision before her remains the same.

Dexter is laying beside her, his seemingly naked body half covered in sheets. His skin glistens with sweat and his hair sticks to his forehead. There’s that familiar twitch to his lips, a sign of his amusement.

A shiver runs through her at the sight of him. Has he always been this handsome?

He reaches out, his hand caressing her cheek tenderly as he leans in. Instinctively, she does the same and their lips meet. Her hands slip into his hair, gripping it in her fists as she kisses him desperately, like he’s the very air she needs to survive. Maybe he is.

She bites his lip, her tongue swiping across his teeth and around his mouth. She can’t get enough of him, and he’s just as desperate as she is, pulling her atop of him so much of their bare skin is touching. His hands roam all over her body like a brand, searing her with their shared desire.

“Dex—fuck,” she whines, high and needy, as his fingers slip inside of her. “I’ve gotta tell you something.”

“Tell me then,” he murmurs against his lips as he finger-fucks her, already so attuned to what she needs—like he’s always been.

However, the words don’t come, and neither does she.

Deb opens her eyes to the ceiling of her room. She is alone, and she can feel slick between her thighs. Shame sits heavy in her belly, but so too does lust. She’s hungry for him and isn’t sure this craving will ever be satiated. She has always been greedy—clinging to him stronger than a sister should—and she fears that if allowed a taste of him, it won’t ever be enough.

Deb knows she won’t be able to nip this in the bud; there’s already an entire garden inside of her dedicated to Dexter that’s been growing for years, roses, thorns and all.

HARRY'S CODE is the primary element holding Dexter back not only from acting upon his impulses, but also suffering the consequences of doing so. So, it's only fair I share it with those of you who don't know it!

Don't get caught. The golden rule. The one superseding everything else, and often the root for any exceptions in Dexter's exploits. Never kill an innocent. The primary moral hook. Never kill someone who's not done a level of harm deserving of it. It's why Doakes had to die at the hands of Layla, and why even LaGuerta was victim to Debra instead. Targets must be killers who have evaded the justice system. This, Dexter toys with a lot. Harry never specified how said killers should have evaded the system, thus leaving the other Morgan to the habit of helping them slip away so they may be his to hunt. Killing must serve a purpose, otherwise it's just plain murder. It's not about revenge or some god complex, Dexter kills "to balance the books." Or so Harry had hoped. Dexter, all things considered, often kills for himself. There are exceptions - when children are at risk or when Rita and Debra suffer - but in general circumstances, he kills for the thrill of it. Blend in. Maintain appearances. Dexter likes to think he's got this one covered. The awkward albeit dependable lab geek of the Miami PD - he must be blending in rather nicely, no? Well, almost. Every now and again he'll fail to understand a cue or an expression and act rigidly. Still, it just comes off as him being reclusive and socially awkward. Feign emotions and normalcy. Paired with the one preceding it, this is the rule that's kept Dexter so unsuspecting. Smile when you need to, nod and shrug, do things others would and never, under any circumstances, be yourself. Control your urges and channel them. The wrap-up rule. Just like the very first one supersedes everything, this envelopes them all. He might itch to slice someone open, but he must withhold, do his research and bide his time. It keeps him safe, ensures that his victims fit the code and, for what it's worth, makes the eventual kills all the more gratifying.

Dexter Trailer Teases A Second Series Finale

The Dark Passenger is back. Dexter Morgan is returning to Showtime in Dexter: New Blood, and the new limited series appears to be aiming to erase the, let’s call it contentious, reputation of the Dexter series finale. You can check out the first look at Dexter: New Blood below.

Michael C. Hall is back as everyone’s favorite compulsive serial killer, this time taking up residence in snowy upstate New York under the alias Jim Lindsay (the name appears to be a nod to Dexter creator Jeff Lindsay). Dexter is once again hiding in plain sight, but he knows that “Every day I walk through this world, faking it. Knowing if someone knows who I am, that’s it.” Dex doesn’t appear to have changed his look much, meaning that in the world of Dexter, you can still count on the FBI to be pretty incompetent.

A change of scenery from the colorful beaches of Miami or the washed-out Pacific Northwest where we left him and his lumberjack beard behind should create an interesting new look for the series. There are also fresh faces in the cast. Julia Jones (Twilight Saga), Alano Miller (Underground), Johnny Sequoyah (Believe), Jack Alcott (The Good Lord Bird), and Clancy Brown, who is reported to be this season’s Big Bad, will have the pleasure of cozying up to former blood-splatter analyst.

Jones appears to be getting the most up close and personal, as she’s playing a police officer who has developed a personal relationship with “Mr. Lindsey.” Everyone that has dated Dexter either ends up dead or left alone to raise his child, so prayers for Jones’ character.

A New Dexter Finale Needs to Reckon With Dexter Morgan’s Sins

There isn’t much to go on in the trailer other than setting up the basics of Dexter’s new life. Brown can be seen taking in a crime scene with Dexter, and a sniper wearing some winter tactical gear leaves an impression, but the trailer is largely keeping us at an arm’s length. Perhaps returning showrunner Clyde Phillips—who ran the first four seasons of the original series—wants to keep as much of the story under wraps as possible. We do know that the Dexter revival will be 10-episodes long and will debut November 7 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.

For those wanting a bit of insider information, casting announcements have revealed that two major players from the original series’ run — Jennifer Carpenter, who played Dexter’s foul-mouthed sister Debra Morgan and John Lithgow, who portrayed the sinister Trinity Killer — will be back, but one can presume they will take the appearance as “ghosts,” as we know Dexter has a penchant for talking to his deceased father, among others. The pair are noticeably absent from the trailer, but that’s probably for a good reason.

Whether to redeem a universally derided finale or quench the thirst for more Dexter, Dexter Morgan is back, but whether the show captures the magic of its early seasons or falls victim to the repeated faults of its later installments remains to be seen. Regardless, we’ll be watching!
