QHAVPPFAQ
Quarantine Halloween: A Virtual Paint Party
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who are you?
Kyle Marcus Bryant, aka @caelpictor. He/him/his/pronoun-flexible, Black, queer, 26 (and a half), Taurus, INFP, ADHD af. I’m an artist (with a degree in it, as of 2018!), a nerd, and a lover of Halloween!
What is this event?
Quarantine Halloween: A Virtual Paint Party is an art class conducted via video call in which I teach you step-by-step how to paint a Halloween masterpiece! #distancelearning
When is this taking place?
There are two classes scheduled: Friday October 30, 2020, and Saturday October 31, 2020 (AKA Halloween) from 7-9 PM EST.
Where?
It’s all happening on Zoom! Technology is amazing!
Why?
Like many of us, I lost my job to the pandemic. I am now safely quarantined away in VA with family, staring down my student loan debt, bored out of my mind, and looking for a fun way to connect with others while also offering my talents in exchange for your cold. hard. cash!
How much does it cost?
The $10 instructor fee covers one participant for one night. If you want to take both classes, make sure to get two tickets! And if two or more people will be joining the class from one location, please make sure everyone in the group is covered! Thanks 🙂
Is there a difference between the two classes?
Nope! They will be the same. I’m just offering two different dates for your convenience! Aren’t I nice?
How do I sign up?
Simply send in your payment and the best way to contact you, and let me know which day you’ll be participating (Fri 30 or Sat 31). Once I receive your payment, I’ll add you to my little list, confirm with you that you’re on it, and I’ll send you the Zoom link/meeting ID and password on the day of the event.
Where do I send my payment?
Venmo: @KyleBryant
PayPal: KyleMB13
CashApp: $KyleMarcusBryant
None of these are case-sensitive. If there’s one you prefer that’s not listed, let me know, and we’ll see what we can do!
Which is your preferred payment method?
Venmo, but any of the ones listed above are great!
Do you accept tips/donations?
Yes 🙂 always :)))
What’s the vibe?
Very casual. Drinking, Halloween costumes, and conversation are all highly encouraged! (But never forced)! I will be in costume, probably sipping wine or a cocktail and jamming out to music while I teach. It’s quite liberating, being able to drink on the job.
What’s the etiquette?
We try to stay on mute while the teacher is teaching, but otherwise, go wild. ***And please ALWAYS feel free to jump off mute if you have questions or comments!
Who can join?
Literally everyone! Spread the word! Bring your friends! The more the merrier!
I have no artistic skills! Can I join?
I said EVERYONE, didn’t I? That’s exactly what I’m here for! Just think of me as your personal Bob Ross; I may not be able to hold your hand in person, but I will break every brushstroke down for you as simply as possible, and you’ll be surprised at how well you do. Again, if you ever have questions or need my advice, feel free to chime in at any time! And remember to focus on the experience of the painting, not the product!
General advice for first-time painters?
Work in big, general shapes first, then focus on smaller details later. I also usually start with the background and build the foreground on top of that. Also, relax, experiment, and have fun with it! There are no rules!
How long is the event?
Two hours, but please allow a little extra time for people to settle in at the beginning, finish up at the end, etc.. I promise it’ll breeze right by, but don’t feel pressured to be there for the whole event. If you miss the beginning, I’m great at catching people up, and if you duck out early, I won’t mind!
What image are you teaching us to paint?
Coming soon!
What materials do I need?
Here’s a breakdown:
Essentials:
1. Acrylic paints (a nice set of 5-12 colors is plenty)
2. Palette (for holding/mixing paint; a paper plate works just as well)
3. Brushes (at least one small brush for details, and one large brush for covering large areas; preferably one medium-sized brush as well)
4. Canvas (either a stretched canvas or a flat canvas panel, any size!)
5. Water cup (a vessel to hold brushes; I’m using an old plastic gelato container)
6. Easel (to hold the painting upright and steady; not strictly necessary, as you can use a desk or table or your lap instead if you’d like)
7. Paper towels or old rag (for cleanup and drying brushes)
Other:
1. Workspace (away from things you don’t want paint on; lay down tarp or newspaper to protect walls, floors, and other surfaces if necessary)
2. Paint clothes, smock, apron, etc. (wear something you don’t mind getting paint on!)
3. Trash can, running water, acetone, etc. (for cleanup)
Bonus:
1. Hair dryer (to help paint dry faster)
2. Pencils, pens, markers, pastels, etc. (for sketching, signing your name, etc)
3. Glitter, collage materials, sponges, stamps, stencils, etc. (just for fun!)
4. Your favorite drink (for inspiration 😉)
Where can I get them?
I’ve bought literally everything on this list from Target and Michael’s (except the easel, which I bought online). I would mask up and check your local department store or arts and crafts store (Walmart, Blick, Plaza, Hobby Lobby, Jerry’s, JoAnne’s, etc.), or if you prefer to order it all online, you can do so easily from those same retailers or… 😬 Amazon. (Protip: If you’re lost on the internet, but would like to avoid buying from Amazon, you can use its search engine as a jumping-off point and go directly to the retailers they have listed 😜) Pretty much everything else is just household items.
What will it cost me?
If you’re not worried about the quality—and you shouldn’t be! I’ve found the cheaper stuff works just as well!—you can buy the essentials (paints, palettes, brushes, and canvases) for ~$20. These items are also often sold in bulk, or in sets with each other!
What colors are we using?
My current plan for the palette is black, white, yellow, purple, orange, and green, the sp00kiest of colors! If you just want to get those six, feel free. However, I always recommend having the primary colors: red, yellow, and blue, plus black and white; that way you can mix any color you want!
What size canvas should I buy?
That is entirely up to you! 8 x 10” and 16 x 20” are pretty popular sizes, though.
Are there any extra precautions I should take?
Acrylic paint comes off skin, hair, nails, and smooth non-porous surfaces fairly easily, but it does stain clothing and carpet, and is very stubborn once dried. I would recommend being careful to prevent spills in the first place, but if it does get on something precious, rinse immediately and completely with water. If already dry, try acetone or a similar cleanser to break down the plastic particles in the paint.
How do I clean up afterward?
My method: Scrub brushes along the bottom of your water cup to get all the paint off them, then rinse under running water until water runs clear. Either let the paint water sit in the cup until the paint particles have settled to the bottom, or pour it through a filter (coffee filter, cloth, etc, because acrylic paint is made of a micro-plastic that can be harmful to the environment and your plumbing in large amounts!) Leave everything else alone until it’s completely dry, and then peel or scratch dried paint off your palette if desired. Scrub your paint-covered hands and other body parts until clean, preferably with something exfoliating.
Is the paint non-toxic?
I mean, I wouldn’t drink it on purpose, but yeah, paint left on the skin or ingested (in small amounts) is harmless.
How can I contact you?
You can comment right here on this post, DM me on any of my social media, or email me! I promise to get back to you ASAP!
Social Media: @caelpictor (everywhere)
Email: [email protected]
I will update this post as questions are asked between now and the event, so please let me know if there’s a question I didn’t answer here for you!
Thanks for reading, and I’m excited to see you all there!!!

Corel Painter 2020 Review
Painter 2020 - Where the power of Painter really comes into focus. You won’t believe your eyes when you see how much faster Painter 2020 can be.
youtube
Review By Aaron Rutten - 6/25/2019 Affiliate links in this article earn revenue that allows me to continue making great digital art resources.
Today, I‘m excited to review the latest version of Corel Painter 2020. I’ll give you an overview of the top features and share my thoughts on this version.
Pros & Cons of This Version
Pros:
Some brushes can leverage your GPU to greatly increase performance for large brushes and large canvases.
Easier to locate and make sense of advanced brush and tool controls.
Significant improvements to color selection.
Cons:
Not all brushes can support GPU.
Performance gains are hardware-dependent.
No new brush technology.
GPU-Gotta See it To Believe It!
When I first discovered Corel Painter, around version 9, it quickly became my art software of choice and I have been using it ever since. I'm drawn to Corel Painter because it offers one of the best and most robust digital painting experiences, but such power can be a double-edged sword. While it can be a benefit to paint with brushes that offer a more complex and organic look, the speed at which you can paint can suffer, especially while painting on large canvases. Compared to other art apps, Painter can feel a bit sluggish at times. This has become especially noticeable as more and more art applications are able to utilize a computer’s GPU (video card) to significantly improve brush performance. Today, I’m excited to say that Painter is finally able to leverage the power of your GPU to improve brush speed dramatically. That’s right, folks. Painter can finally take advantage of your video card.
I purchased an Nvidia GTX 1080 a couple of years ago, and while it has been great for improving the performance of Photoshop, Corel Painter had not a care in the world about my fancy video card. Now, with the addition of Painter 2020’s Brush Accelerator Engine, I’m not only able to utilize my GPU to speed up brushes, but Painter actually analyzes my computer hardware and optimizes itself for peak performance on my system. I can also see an overview of how Painter is making use of my hardware and I’m able to gain insight about how I might be able to upgrade components to improve performance. On my system, GPU has a huge impact on performance and I’m amazed at how much faster extra-large brushes perform, even on very large canvases.
[Brush Accelerator report on my i7 Desktop System with GTX 1080 GPU]
Naturally, the performance gains you may experience are going to heavily depend on what kind of hardware you have in your system, but if you have a good computer, it’s finally going to feel like it when you use Painter. Well, that is unless you use any of the brush technology that is not optimized to use the GPU (Which is a lot of brushes). I’m a bit disappointed to say that only the stamp-type brushes are able to utilize the GPU. However, many of the brushes have improved Multi-Core performance and some brushes can also use AVX2 to further boost performance. These performance boosts are welcome but are dwarfed in comparison to the performance gained by leveraging the GPU. I wish more of Painter’s brushes could use my GPU, but I’m happy with the progress made so far. Many of my favorite brushes can now use GPU, so overall my painting experience has noticeably improved. I feel much more comfortable painting on large canvases and blocking in large areas with a massive brush. So for those artists out there who have been holding out, now is a good time to give Painter another chance. If you are already a Painter user and you have a good computer, it would be well worth it to upgrade for this feature alone. But let’s take a look at some of the other updates to Corel Painter 2020:

New Brushes
While there isn’t any dramatic new brush technology to play with in this version of Painter, there are two new brush categories. The Fast and Ornate & Fast and Simple categories feature 26 enhanced brushes that take advantage of Painter’s Performance optimizations. There are also several new optimized watercolor brushes found in the Watercolor Category. It’s worth mentioning that you can enable GPU for your own custom brushes that can support it, just uncheck Disable GPU in the Performance panel to give your brushes a boost.
User Interface Advancements
The new user interface improvements in Painter 2020 aim to streamline your workflow by:
- Reducing the number of panels you need to have open on your screen
- Reducing the number of clicks required to access priority controls
- Making essential controls more easily accessible.
Many of the properties have also been grouped and reorganized in a more logical way to make it easier to find the controls you are looking for.
Property Labels & Tool Properties Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the number of brushes and properties available in Corel Painter? Lucky for you, the new Property Labels in the Properties Bar makes it easier to make sense of the properties and what they relate to. This can be disabled in the Preferences > Interface. Just as well, many of the tools in the toolbar now show more properties in the Properties Bar to make it easier to find what you are looking for without having to dig through menus.
[Property Bar Labels and Magic Wand Tool Properties]
Stroke Options & New Guides Panels New panels have been added for the Mirror Painting and Perspective Guide tools to make it easier to access these controls without having to leave the brush tool. You can even add Mirror Painting Presets. You can open these panels from a new Stroke Options flyout in the properties bar, the Advanced Button on the Properties bar (when the tool is selected), or from Window > Composition Panels.
[Stroke Options Flyout with Perspective Guides and Mirror Painting Panels]
Enhanced Shape Tools
Artists who use the vector shape tools in Painter will be pleased to hear that the vector tools have been given some TLC. In Painter 2020, all shape and shape editing tools are now available in the Properties Bar along with many of the essential shape commands. The workflow for changing the fill and stroke has been improved by making it easier to edit shape properties, plus there is now a Shape Attributes flyout in the properties bar and a separate Shape Attributes panel. These improvements really make working with vector shapes a lot less frustrating. I might even go as far as to say that it actually feels close to what you’d expect from a dedicated vector application in terms of essential vector shape editing.
[Editing the stroke width of a vector shape using the Shape Properties panel]
Improved Brush Selection
Brush selection has been streamlined in Painter 2020. By default, a new Stroke Preview mode shows more information about the appearance and characteristics of each brush. In this view, you can see the brush dab, a stroke preview, and the brush name. This view can be customized to show more or less information in the Variant Display menu.
Dab previews have also been updated to better represent the brushes. In some cases, a dab preview is replaced by an icon, such as in the case of Particle Brushes which shows the particle type.
Compact Brush Selector For those of us who are looking to save every last pixel we can for our canvases, there is a new Compact Brush Selector found in Window > Brush Selector > Panel (Compact). This panel is optimized to take up less space, but can also be expanded horizontally while flowing the brushes to fit the width of the panel. You can also access the full view Brush Selector and have both on screen if you like.
[Enhanced Stroke and Dab previews in the new Compact Brush Selector]
Last Used Brush Toggle For those of you who bounce between a brush and a blender or a pencil and an eraser, you can now quickly toggle between two brushes using the Last Used Brush button in the properties bar. When you activate the new Last Used Brush feature, your brush toggles to the previously selected brush. You can also invoke this command with a custom keyboard shortcut, express key or custom palette command. I set mine to ~.
Convenient Color Selection
Color selection has been improved throughout Painter. Dialogs that deal with choosing a color, such as the Paint Bucket’s fill with Current Color, now show the Universal Color Wheel. The color wheels are synchronized across Painter 2020.
[Universal color picker in the Shape Tool Properties]
Previous Color Preview You’ll notice in the Color panel, the color swatch that shows your currently selected color is now divided vertically in two. When you choose a new color, the left side of the swatch shows the current color and the right side of the swatch shows the previous color for easy color comparisons.
[Preview the current and previously selected colors]
Color Ramp Sliders And how could you not notice that the RGB and HSV sliders now show beautiful color ramps that can be expanded horizontally? You can also customize the color panel options to show less content and be more compact. For example, you can show nothing but the color sliders.
[The New Color Ramp Sliders in Corel Painter 2020]
Temporal Color Panel Updates The Temporal Color Panel has been updated with a new menu that allows you to customize the panel. You may have found some things were missing from this panel in Painter 2019 such as a button to toggle between your Main and Additional color. Those features are now included in the panel.
Color Harmonies
A new Color Harmonies panel is now available to show you swatches of colors that are harmonious to your currently selected color. There are 6 different modes: Analogous, Complimentary, Split Complementary, Tetradic, Monochromatic Light and Monochromatic Dark. Each mode can be shown or hidden as desired. You even have the option of locking harmonies so that they cannot be changed and you can save harmony swatches to the Color Set Libraries panel. These color suggestions can take a lot of the guesswork out of choosing colors that work well together. I find the monochromatic strings of values are particularly useful for shading.
[Corel Painter 2020 Color Harmonies panel]
Customizable Eraser Tool
You can now fully customize the Eraser Tool. Choose from a greater variety of dab profiles, size properties and opacity properties. You can even make customizations from the General Panel to create Captured Dabs and other types of Erasers.
[Customized Eraser Tool in Painter 2020 ]
Enhanced Layers Workflow
Working with layers in Corel Painter is a bit easier this time around. Contextual menus have been updated to show more relevant commands for layers. You can right-click on the layers panel to access these instead of digging through the Layers menu.
Preventing Mistakes You can now lock the canvas layer to prevent any accidents on your background and you can no longer accidentally paint on hidden layers.
[Say goodbye to accidental marks on your hidden layers] Another headache that is alleviated with Painter 2020 is that pasting when the canvas is selected will now place the new layer above the canvas layer, not at the top of the layers stack. And you can now collapse hidden layers and they will remain hidden. It’s little tweaks like this that really make a difference in my workflow.
Other Updates
I’ve focused this review on what I consider to be the major updates in Painter 2020, but there are quite a few more updates and bug fixes that I did not mention. You can learn about all of the new features by watching my Painter 2020 tutorials on YouTube or by joining my free Painter 2020 webinar. I also have an upcoming video training course that can teach you all about how to use Corel Painter 2020.
Conclusion
If you have a fast computer that can take advantage of Multi-Core, AVX2 and especially GPU, then Painter 2020 is a must-have upgrade. If you’re working on a system that is below Painter 2020’s recommended system requirements, then you may experience some minor improvements in performance, but the most significant benefits to upgrading will be the improvements to the UI, brush selection and color.
I’d recommend everyone install the free 30 day trial of Painter 2020 and run the performance test to get a feel for how Painter might perform on your system. You may find that a simple upgrade like installing a new video card could dramatically boost Painter’s performance. Or maybe you’ll get the push you need to finally get a new computer. At the end of the day, you’ll rest easy knowing that you’ve done all you can to get Painter running in tip-top shape.

After graduating from a Bachelor of Visual Communication, beading artist Camille Laddawan completed a Masters of Art Therapy, which sparked her interest in non-verbal styles of communication.
Throughout her twenties, Camille had set out following the deep artistic urges she’d experienced since childhood, slowly trying to find her medium. She experimented with photorealistic drawing, abstract oil painting and sculpture until she came to beading at the beginning of 2020.
Over the past 18 months, Camille has taught herself beading processes and techniques, slowly developing a Tone Code – her own symbology of colours and marks that each correspond to a letter of the English alphabet. Using this personal coda, she occasionally threads messages into her finished pieces. Other designs are simply dictated by pattern and palette.
Camille cites a varied selection of influences: mathematician Max Dehn who taught about the intersection of art, nature and maths; philosopher Susanne Langer for her unusual writings about symbolism and emotion; Paul Klee for his technical yet dreamlike painted poetry; polymath Joseph Albers for his work in colour and geometry; and linguist Roy Harris, whose research challenges the typical understanding of how communication, language and sign are formed.
In short, Camille’s art is deep and enveloping; both stirringly personal and yet expansive and engulfing. Her beaded creations act as a personal cipher to an increasingly abstract world.
Hello Camille! You live and breathe an artistic life. What first brought you to bead artistry?
When I was three years old at Montessori school, I lost a beaded coin purse. It was tiny, could fit inside my palm, and it was coloured yellow with pink and green flowers — perfect for putting seeds, a marble, or a spare lolly in. I loved it and its magical feel.
Other than that, my family and education have shaped my artistic background. My mother is a scientific and natural history artist, who taught painting and drawing at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne. Growing up, my sister was a talented violinist, and my grandmother was a photojournalist and an aid worker for children. The people surrounding my family were either in botany, science, art, drama or music.
Throughout high school I was extremely shy, so I engaged in a lot of sport and athletics, and hid away in the art room on the forgotten top floor (places that didn’t require me to talk). The school I went to offered life drawing and was rich in art supplies, so I made the most of the facilities and often stayed after school until 6pm, working around the cleaners, trying to master photorealism. Upon completing VCE I wanted to study a Bachelor of Fine Arts, but my family was concerned I wouldn’t earn a living, so I wasn’t allowed!
Your studio space is so calm and beautiful, can you tell me about it?
My studio is located at the front of my home in Collingwood, where I live with my partner, housemates, and Ru our dog. The property is an old shop and residence built in the 1900s, and renovated about 15 years ago by my uncle Kim, who is a prolific carpenter and furniture maker. The house is filled with his intricate woodwork. The building shoulders up to the Collingwood North post office and looks out at one of the oldest brothels in Victoria, an oil painter’s house, and another mysterious terrace (we don’t really know what goes on there).
My studio is a narrow, two-by-four meter wood-panelled room, which faces north. My desk is pushed up against the front window, which looks out onto Johnston Street; to people collecting their letters and parcels, people riding past on motorised scooters with their loud and tinny speakers, and the eclectic foot traffic of the ragged and faithful Collingwood.
What is the process of making one of your pieces?
I use high-quality glass seed beads, strong thread, extra fine beading needles, and a loom. Beading is a committed process that requires full attention, patience, and stamina. It’s hard to converse with people, as I’m consistently counting each bead and row, so I listen to Radio National or music while I work. This mathematical element sets a rhythm, and my hands are constantly attuning to the tension of the threads. Beading for me is simple and calming, with its various sequences of repetitions and patterns. I think this strange desire to devote so much time organising tens of thousands of minuscule beads and threads into rows gives balance to my mind, which tends to wander.
Once the beading is finished, I loosen the screws on the sides of the loom and the beading sinks off the loom. When holding them in your hands, they feel heavy and slinky. Then I name each work, slide them into a glassine envelope, stamp my Thai name on them and write out a certificate of authenticity. Overall, the beadings appear delicate, but they are very tough, somewhat like Hauberk chain mail.
Why are you drawn to beads?
Beads provide one of the earliest examples of symbolic thinking. Symbolic thought is the capacity to allow one thing to represent another. Beads have been used in many cultures throughout the world for tens of thousands of years as objects of trade and commerce, as well as for personal adornment. My interest in beads is because of this connection to symbolic thinking.
Can you explain the Tone Code you devised to inscribe messages into your pieces?
Tone Code is a visual alphabet I devised using combinations of light and dark tones to differentiate letters and punctuation. I wanted to find a way to connect with language and conceal messages in my work, so I began by researching non-verbal languages like Morse Code. Tone Code creates a dual purpose within my beadings, as viewers can understand and appreciate the way emotion and expression are conveyed aesthetically, as well as literally.
What does art-making mean to you, and what do you hope to communicate?
For me, art-making is a gentle and constant state of the search for or creation of meaning. The beauty in art is that it connects with more mysterious and complex ways of communicating. I am interested in how we can access language and communication from different perspectives using aesthetics.
The 26 letters of the English alphabet are oral symbols that are both powerfully functional and tailored to the colonial history that predominates Australia and globalised communication. The English language, with its left-to-right scanning from top to bottom and cohesive, linear nature is restrictive, imperialistic and it can skew and prioritise certain ways of understanding the world.
Many people believe that written/oral language is a prerequisite for understanding; if you do not have the words then you do not understand yourself, the other or the subject. My beadings hope to prompt viewers to think about other ways in which language, storytelling, documentation, and information can be communicated.
Camille takes commissions for new works and sells existing pieces via email here or Instagram DM here. Learn more about her practice here.

Back Story
Kadir Nelson, Class of 1992
Kadir Nelson was born on May 15th, 1974 in Washington D.C., and is an award-winning American author and artist based in Los Angeles, California. His paintings are in the permanent collections of several notable institutions including the United States House of Representatives, the Muskegon Museum of Art, The National Baseball Hall of Fame, United States Postal Museum, the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland, and most recently, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the World Trade Center, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Nelson began drawing at the young age of 3. When he was 11, Kadir was apprenticed under his uncle who was an artist and an art teacher. He received a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and upon graduating with highest honors, he was summoned by DreamWorks Pictures to create conceptual artwork for Steven Spielberg’s Oscar® nominated feature, “Amistad” and the animated feature, “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron”. He is the recipient of multiple awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York, including the prestigious Hamilton King Award as well the 2020 recipient of the Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Award for illustration. He adds this to multiple Caldecott Honors, Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Awards, New York Times Best Illustrated Book Awards, several NAACP Image Awards and an Olympic Art Bronze medal, among others. Mr. Nelson has also created artwork for a host of distinguished clients, including but not limited to National Geographic, HBO, Nike, Disney, Hennessy, and Sony Music, for whom he painted the cover artwork for Michael Jackson’s posthumously released album, “Michael,” which was listed in the Guinness Book of Records® for the largest poster in the world. Nelson’s artwork was also featured on the cover of recording artist Drake’s multi-platinum selling album, “Nothing Was the Same”; over a dozen commemorative US postage stamps honoring American legends, such as Major League All-Stars Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, NBA great Wilt Chamberlain, and most recently Motown’s Prince of Soul Marvin Gaye, which altogether have sold several million stamps.
Nelson’s masterful artwork also frequently graces the cover of The New Yorker magazine, paying tribute to historical and contemporary American figures in New York City and abroad, including the magazine’s dandy, Eustace Tilley. Additionally, Nelson has also authored and illustrated several award- winning New York Times Best Selling picture books including, “WE ARE THE SHIP: The Story of Negro League Baseball”, which was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, and “Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans”. Currently, he has over 30 children’s book titles in print with a global circulation in the millions, and in multiple languages. Nelson’s list of illustrated children’s books include titles by Debbie Allen, Will Smith, Spike and Tonya Lee, and Delores Jordan, mother of NBA great Michael Jordan.
Nelson’s primarily figurative paintings and sculptures focus on historical narratives and heroic subjects in American culture and are often informed by the Old Masters like Ingres, Michelangelo, Hopper, and Tanner. His sumptuous settings and characters, rich palette, and realistic, yet painterly technique speaks to both modern urban realism and masterly works of turn-of-the century American painters. *See also the ePacer Online eNews Blog at: https://epacer.tumblr.com/post/170670358442/back-story titled “Back Story” of February 9, 2018.

It makes sense to me that it would have a crease in the middle of this masterpiece of simple American life. It doesn’t in the painting but as I was looking through a book of his paintings this morning, it makes sense to me this divide right in the middle of our American beauty, our most simple, emotional and highly skilled expression of us. This is my mood as I think about growing up in the country, surrounded by those wild animals my mother took from people who thought it made them look cool to domesticate them, and she would try and nurse them back to health. My country life of oak trees and seeing the sun through the dust coming from behind a Chevy pulling away from me. And the ocean: that highly volatile, multi-faceted friend who taught me with her daily designs how beautifully complex every personality is — that was later, and I’d sit and watch her for hours, even as a kid. But the tone here is tumultuous, the personality swathed with crude windowed yellows and grey-Blue silences. The mood is ominous yet it’s simplified. Today is a day given as it stands: take it! — this potpourri of personalities. It all starts on a painter’s palette while we sleep, one brushstroke after another. Petal Palette Thank You – Two Versions
A friend recently asked if I would make her some thank you note cards. I was happy to help. I knew the Petal Palette stamps would be something she would like. So I set to work. Here is a sampling of what I made.
Do you have a favorite?
My color palette inspiration came from this week’s challenge over at T.G.I.F. Challenges. I always love a color challenge. Here’s the banner and link for that.

Beneath the Stars Chapter 6
Chapter: I II III IV V
AO3 Linkage
Summary: In an effort to get to know herself better, Feyre decides to take him up on his offer to join the Student Body Council where she helps Rhys's friends, including a particularly perky cousin, plan the upcoming Winter Formal dance.
Chapter 6
Amren was a vision in wicked delight when I pounced at her Monday afternoon. The prat had ignored my texts all weekend. She took one look at me, tucked her tongue between her lips right at the corner, and darted down behind her canvas.
Thankfully, there were no dragons nor mustaches littering the tableau on this occasion.
“Amren - what the hell!”
A gleeful, self-indulgent giggle unlike any sound I’d ever heard from Amren burst forth. I sat down like a lead weight. “Seriously - you gave him my phone number?”
Another giggle.
“And my address?”
Now she cackled.
“Amren, if you would please,” Mrs. Weaver said from her desk.
Amren settled back in, but didn’t reel the amusement in one bit. “Oh lighten up Feyre. He doesn’t bite and you could use a little shaking up in your life.”
“If this is about Tamlin-”
“Pft!” she scoffed. “Of course it’s about Tamlin. You don’t have to date Rhysand, but I’m tired of watching you moon over that boy when better options are out there. Trust me - I know.”
My eyes widened.
“No way! Did you two-”
She shook her head, but mixed some dark greens on her palette - if the earth could storm and brew as the oceans and skies. “No, but he certainly tried.”
A gasp escaped me. The thought of Rhysand entreating Amren - Amren who’s only romantic pursuit that I was aware of in recent history was a foreign exchange student from Germany who popped up two years ago with a devil’s tongue and jewelry to match that Amren simply couldn’t resist - was simply comical.
“I hope you gave him hell, Am,” I said blatantly beaming at her.
She looked up at me, the cat coming out to catch a mouse caught in the trap chasing cheese. “Rhysand may not bite, but I certainly do.”
“Girls, much as I do enjoy the stimulation one finds in another artist’s eye,” Mrs. Weaver said coming over to peek at us, “I suspect this conversation is not particularly relevant to your AP examinations?”
With a mumbled apology, I stared at my canvas.
Blank, blank, blank.
“Feyre?” Mrs. Weaver looked from my empty tableau to me and back. I sighed, sinking into my chair.
“A self-portrait? Really?
Her look was kind - understanding. “It does not have to be quite so literal, my dear. I highly doubt the examiners expect ten unique representations of your face. Art is universal across the board and no one would ask for anything quite so literal nor predictable. You have to surprise them.”
“How?”
“Try surprising yourself first and see what happens.”
Whatever that meant.
“Really, Feyre. Just put something down for now so I can see you’ve tried.”
She moved on to another student and I continued to stare blankly at my canvas while Amren popped her headphones in and mixed the swirls of green onto her own piece. There was still something of a dragon hidden in the abstract of what she painted.
Surprise myself.
How exactly did someone surprise themselves when they’d known everything there was to know about who they were their entire life?
Then again, did I know myself? I thought I did. My life had never felt quite so unbalanced - mutable since mom left. There was a piece of me missing without her - and Elain, and Nesta, and maybe even dad too when he drank.
I was so proud when we finished unpacking in the new house and he hadn’t even opened the box with his liquor inside. That was the only time my dad disappeared and the hole inside my heart widened, was when he allowed the bottle to swallow him whole into his miserable depression without mom and I had to hope the lid hadn’t been magically re-sealed atop trapping him inside forever.
But I was still… Feyre, right? I was - damn, who the hell was I?
I painted and I went to school. I supposed that made me a painter and a student, but how obvious was that? Surprise them, surprise them, surprise them - surprise myself. How the hell was I supposed to -
“Amren? Amren!” I tugged on her shirt - plain black and capped at the shoulder - and whisper shouted Pst! At her until she took an earbud out. I could hear classical music playing through it - a soundtrack to murder by.
“What?”
I gulped, but forced the words out of my mouth. “There’s a - a student body council meeting today… isn’t there?”
The corners of Amren’s lips curled up like a fox’s ears spotting a rabbit across a snow-strewn meadow. “Why yes, Feyre. There certainly is. Why do you ask? You don’t fancy yourself coming,” and she set down her brush with obvious finality, my answer decided for me, “do you?”
I tried not to let the steam leaking out my ears become visible when I quietly asked to accompany her to the meeting.
I stood outside the administration building after school and texted Tamlin, apologizing for not being able to meet up with him like normal. I felt bad about our disagreement over the move and he was absent at lunch - abnormal for him. Food was not something he found easy to resist.
When I sent a follow up text five minutes after asking if I could make it up to him later that night, he replied back not a minute later: Absolutely. My place.
An arm rested over my shoulder - softly to give me space, close enough to feel a little warmth.
“You know you have to actually go inside to get credit for attending,” Rhysand said. “Unless you were planning on sending the family house ghost in your stead.”
“Why must you always insist on being so dramatic? Get off.” I jerked until his arm fell away. “You’ll ruin my hair. That ghost spent a good deal of time fussing with it this morning before I left.”
Rhys snorted and opened the door for me with a wide sweeping gesture. “After you, Feyre darling.”
I inhaled deeply, but walked forward. What the hell was I getting myself into?
A loud bark of laughter met me as Rhys led me into the administration conference room where the Student Body Council met every Monday for after school meetings. Cassian sat kicked back in one of the chairs with his legs propped up on the table while Azriel quietly recounted some odd joke or other that prompted the booming sounds coming from Cassian.
Their conversation didn’t stop as I stepped through the door, but Cassian took one look at me, then Rhys, then back to me and I swore his eyes sparked with a glint of fiery knowing. Azriel simply nodded at me before concluding his story.
“Feyre,” Cassian said. He slapped his hands together to rid them of the crumbs from the bag of Famous Amos cookies he’d been eating. “How’s your sister?”
“Ask her yourself,” I scoffed. “Didn’t you get a date? Or did she wise up and ditch your sorry ass after all.”
“You mean you don’t know?” His eyebrows rose, considering my ignorance. “Interesting.”
“Where’s Morrigan?” Rhys cut in, for which I was grateful.
“Getting out of Cheer,” Azriel said, staring down at the open binder in front of him and - I suspected - merely pretending to flit through it. “She’s meeting Amren on the way.”
So that’s where my friend had disappeared to after AP Studio Art. Part of me wondered if she’d done it intentionally for my embarrassment.
“Who’s Morrigan?” I asked, looking to Rhys.
“She’s-”
“Here,” Azriel said, cutting him off. Azriel must have been psychic because it was a good ten seconds before the blondest head I’d ever seen waltzed into the room like sunshine through a field - and came straight at me.
“You must be Feyre!”
“Morrigan,” Rhys hissed.
Morrigan swallowed me whole and over her shoulder I spotted Amren enjoying the sight of me cornered. There was no escaping now.
When she pulled back from the hug, Morrigan was all red lips and teeth grinning like a wildcat at me. Hell - she looked like a wildcat in that cheerleading uniform hugging her every delicious curve.
“I’m so excited to finally meet you. You have no idea!” Morrigan stamped her foot as she prattled on a million miles a minute, beaming the whole way through. I felt like I’d drank liquid gold. “You’re just - ugh, look at you! You’re everything I thought you’d be. My dear cousin has told me all about you.”
“He has?” I asked, not really sure what that would mean. We both looked at Rhys.
“You’re… perky today, Mor.”
She snorted. “When am I not?”
“You two are cousins?”
“Woefully, yes. But it has its perks - like planning this damned dance. Can we start yet?”
“Shouldn’t we wait for the principal and-”
“Nah!” Morrigan chirped. She walked past Cassian and slung her backpack over his feet still draped on the table. “Can we not?” Then she grabbed a seat and plopped down right between the two boys, Azriel sweating through his shirt while he tried to keep his eyes high at the worst of times and on his binder at the best. He frowned when he caught me looking and turned away from all of us.
“Ooh, Famous Amos,” Mor said snagging Cass’s cookies. “My favorite.” Cass didn’t protest the steal, much to my surprise.
I sat down on the opposite side of the table, Rhys sliding behind me to sit on my right while Amren took the seat on my left.
“We need a theme,” Rhys started, but Mor grunted indignantly.
“Aren’t you going to introduce her?”
Rhys’s eyes looked up and almost - just almost - rolled to the side. My jaw slackened slightly. This was possibly the one person in all of Prythian High who got under his skin, maybe ever.
“She already knows everyone,” Rhys replied dutifully, “including you, as you clearly just indicated.”
“Still.”
“Alright, fine.” He gave her a begrudging look, which she returned with enthusiasm, and said, “Everyone, this is Feyre. Feyre darling, this is everyone. She’ll be our Arts and Drama Chair.”
“Minus the darling,” I clarified, “because as I told you the first thousand times you said it, that’s not my name.”
“No it’s not,” he agreed. “Feyre is. The darling is just a perk.” He winked.
“Prick. Pri-ick.”
He smirked viciously and swiveled back around. “We need a theme-”
“Masquerade!” Mor interjected. “It’s perfect. We can do a black and white scheme - that’ll really make the dresses stand out like little pops of color in the crowd - and have low-lit lantern lights strung up everywhere. Very Phantom of the Opera.”
“I don’t know how I ever forget you two are related,” Cassian said, propping a single foot back on the table that Morrigan regarded very carefully. “Neither of you never shut your faces for a single damned moment.”
“Cassian,” Azriel said, obviously tense. The glare Mor had been about to unleash upon the Russian general’s son died when she looked at Az and put her hand on his.
“Don’t fuss, Az. We won’t fight,” she said the softest I’d heard her yet. She removed her touch and Azriel immediately placed both his scar-encrusted hands under the table.
“Much as I agree the masquerade concept is an enchanting one,” Rhys resumed, “the senior class did it our freshmen year. We’ll need something fresher.”
“Blood is fresh.”
We turned collectively to Amren who sat picking at one of her perfectly manicured nails.
Silence.
“You’re fucking creepy, Amren. I hope you know that.”
“Thank you, Cassian. I’m well aware.”
“Just trying to be helpful.”
Rhys rifled in his backpack for a moment and took out a scrap of paper he’d printed off. “This is the suggested list the principal gave us of approved and within budget themes. Much as I love lantern lighting, we don’t have hundreds of bucks to blow at Hobby Lobby.”
The sheet passed to Azriel who immediately passed it to Mor who naturally took the longest time with it. Cassian gave it no more than a glance before brushing it over to Amren who studied it carefully for no longer than was necessary to have it memorized and passed it on to me.
It was a fairly typical list of party themes ranging from casino night to circus carnivals and everything in between. But there wasn’t really anything… exciting. Nothing that suggested magic or whimsy or surprise. Nothing that made you want to feel the romance.
“Well?” Rhysand asked. When no one answered, I looked up from the paper and found them all staring at me expectantly.
“Well what?” I asked.
“You’re the Arts and Drama Chair,” Cassian said. “Figure it out.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down there, Sassy Cassy. You can’t expect me to pick the theme? I thought I was just here to play with poster boards and paint so things at least looked pretty when you made a mess.”
“Part of art is having a vision,” Rhys said. He took the list from me, crumpled it up, and tossed it behind him without another look. “Right now we currently have no vision. But we could use it sorely. This is one of the last big moments of our adolescent careers. We should make it memorable.”
His gaze was thoughtful, pressing even, as his violet eyes reigned down so intently on me. He actually trusted me to do this. A dance was trivial in the long run, but we all knew it meant a lot more than the one-off jokes between us would suggest. A kernel of pride blossomed in my chest at what he was asking of me.
I had to shut my eyes and lean back in my seat with my lips pursed to pretend I was merely considering ideas rather than just trying to escape his gaze.
Dance themes, dance themes…
Well, for starters, it was a winter dance. So anything summery and more upbeat was out. Winter was a cold season, but not without a little refinery. This dance needed to feel sophisticated and just a touch whimsical.
“What do you think of when you think of winter?” I asked. “What words come to mind.”
I kept my eyes closed as the room obliged me with answers, everything from Christmas and spiced apple cider (Morrigan) to ice and snow (Azriel) and weather cold enough to freeze your balls off (Cassian). And in the middle of it, I heard a velvet voice beside me whisper of the cold, cold dead of night, when the skies close and snow glides down.
A snowfall. Though that was a horrible name for it.
Almost as horrible as the way Rhys described it like there was a hidden pain somewhere there.
I remembered once when I was little my parents drove my sisters and I up to Big Bear for the weekend, one of the few places in the southern half of the state that got snow. It was my birthday and I’d told them I wanted to see what it looked like not to be able to see the grass anymore. I couldn’t have been more than five, but I never forgot the moment my dad woke me up at two in the morning in that little cabin in the mountains and told me it was snowing outside.
Mom tried to wake Nesta and Elain, but they couldn’t be bothered to move from their beds, too warm and cozy to see something that would still be there in the morning waiting for them.
But I got up. I went and I sat on the porch with my parents drinking hot cocoa while the snow fell and when it was over some time later, the clouds parted back and you could see the stars. They glistened and burned so bright even under a California sky and it was the most peaceful I’d ever felt. I wanted to reach up and touch each one.
“Starfall,” I said suddenly and my eyes popped open. And for some reason, I only looked at Rhys.
“It’s perfect.” I didn’t even have to explain.
Mor was teetering on the edge of her seat. She stole a sheet of notebook paper right out of Azriel’s hand and started scribbling furiously. “We can hang Christmas lights and get those little paper lamps that people hang candles in - and gold! Everything in gold and maybe little accents of silver here and there…” and on and on she went.
I didn’t say much for the rest of the meeting - if you could call it that. It felt more like a family dinner of sorts with occasional bickering before overwhelming laughter and wisecrack jokes. And at the center of it all were Rhys and Mor, the ring leaders casting fire and light down upon us all.
It was nice.
“When are we going dress shopping?!” Mor asked as we walked out an hour later, the initial details for planning the dance set.
“Dress shopping?” I shot her a look. “I’m not going to the dance.”
Mor’s face shattered. Five steps ahead of me, Rhys’s head jerked.
“What do you mean you aren’t going, Feyre Archeron?”
“When did you learn my last name?”
“Feyre,” Mor said, her head tilting to one side as she frowned. “I sit three rows behind you in Calculus.”
“You do?”
Mor tipped her head back and roared with laughter. “You’re a little clueless, hun, but that’s okay.” She laced her arm in mine and if it weren’t for my sluggish pace, I had a feeling we’d be skipping ahead full speed. “And I’m going to get you dress shopping whether you like it or not. I need an opinion from someone who doesn’t wear black for a living.”
“I wear color plenty,” Amren said behind us sharply and I almost jumped. I hadn’t realized she had followed so close.
“Grey does not count!” We stepped outside into the warm sunshine and Mor paused to close her eyes, basking in the heat. “It’s so nice and warm. Don’t you just love how the sun dances on your skin when it’s hot like this?”
It had to be nearly a hundred degrees out, but she opened her eyes and gave me the brightest smile, pure happiness radiating out of her at 110%. A few feet away, the boys stood talking, but neither Rhys nor Cassian noticed the shy face staring blatantly at the long golden locks in front of them.
I could see why he was so smitten. Morrigan was a force of nature designed to orchestrate us all into living.
When everyone got out their car keys, it felt like an illusion had cracked inside me. I’d forgotten about life for a little while inside that room with all of them and I liked it - a lot. Slowly, I fished my own set of keys out and made my excuses for not joining them all when we got to the student lot.
I was excited, for once, to tell Tamlin everything. There was suddenly this very warm spot in my life where maybe I could carve out a little niche for myself - one that wasn’t isolating like my art.
“Well?” Tamlin asked when he opened the door to his home for me, this sad little sort of smile playing out on his lips. The bright, happy words I’d been bursting at the seams to keep secret in the car - to save and hoard for him lest even the air snatch their excitement - cut off in my heart at the sight of him.
Truthfully, he looked awful and I felt even worse than he looked for ditching him.
“Well nothing,” I said and grabbed him, leading him upstairs to the room I knew all too well. I realized about halfway up that I hadn’t actually told him yet where I had disappeared to this afternoon or who I was with. My stomach knotted guiltily.
And for the first time maybe ever, we had sex and none of the sick, self-loathing feelings went away - not even a little bit.
We had sex - and I felt nothing but a guilt I did not understand.

LCM: London Collections Men Day 3
J.W.ANDERSON
It’s no secret that everything J.W. Anderson stands for is centered on artwork and photography. His J.W. Anderson workshop has hosted some of the most stimulating, and remarkable collaborations between himself and other artists. Therefore it came as no surprise to learn his AW17 collection had been strongly inspired by two English painters, David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield. Both painters are known for their vivacious and graphic still life work, and this was rendered into J.W. Anderson’s designs through the collections lively colour palette and prints.
Like Simon Carter, Anderson is a designer who strives to keep a British aesthetic to every collection he unveils. This time it was crochet that connected the clothes to their heritage and legacy. Describing the technique as “the epitome of British craft”, crochet was seen on shoes, scarves, sleeves, and pockets. Stain-glass effect was the secondary trait of the collection, giving sweaters and even jeans an intricately colourful design. The collection also contained reconstructed artwork on tees, and trousers, along with over-sized scarves and bomber jackets.
At some points during the show, we feared the models may trip over the over-sized scarves which trailed behind them, as you were sat so close, you could easily reach out and touch the magnificent masterpieces as they passed by. Working their way through a series of passages and corridors, every onlooker sat on the front row and got to see the designs in true detail.
As a whole, the collection screamed artwork and colour, and we expected nothing less from a designer who is such an art aficionado.
CHALAYAN
Marking his return to London, Hussein Chalayan showed off his adorning AW17 collection at his flagship London store on the 3rd day of LFWM. According to the press release, the collection is about Ancient Greek values being replaced in the 19th century with a “new value system endorsed by corporate forces.” We took this to mean his designs would have a sense of office wear with ancient influences. This idea was seen in the collection through urbane suits which were loose fitting and draped over the body in a cloak-type way; infusing tailored clothing with a street-wear chi. The jackets and coats were boxy rounded with a combination of voluminous or slashed sleeves. Trousers appeared more formal, tailored but cropped, and tied around the waist, yet sported funky patterns. Chalayan kept the rest of the collection refined and tasteful in a colour palette of mainly blue and grey. With a combination of these things; loose flowing and jackets, and tight trousers, Chalayan achieved his aim of exploring the conceptual — the tension between “containment and things coming away”.
XIMON LEE
XIMON LEE, with its eccentric cut-aways and intricately curated palette, front-lined this season’s GQ China x London Fashion Week collaboration. As this stamped another partnership between the Chinese title and the global men’s show, XIMONLEE became representative of the rapidly increasing recognition Asian menswear brands are having.
The Berlin-based Chinese born Korean designer was the first menswear designer to win the H&M Design Award, and this signaled his foray to the international men’s fashion industry. Having been exposed to a multicultural setting, XIMONLEE’s AW 17 collection turned into an amalgamation of materials – from brocade lava-like textiles to glossy PVC coats.
The show entitled SHAME came from the Chinese combination of ‘beauty’ and ‘ugly’, and XIMONLEE displayed a polarizing illustration of this with his streamlined culottes and oversized tailored suits in subdued tones contrasted with a tapered corset in green leather. Just as you thought the garments go simpler with the introduction of the quintessential leather jacket, XIMONLEE took it a notch further by adding emblems of metallic beads scattered across the material. It’s as if the contrasting elements surrounding us – beauty and ugliness, soft and hard, strong and weak – found their muses in XIMONLEE’s AW17 collection.
The models in eye-popping velvet coats and clean-lined trousers styled by Nordic stylist Anders Thomsen walked step by step while an anarcho-jazz techno music rooting from Chinese traditional tunes was rolling out. From the production to the clothes, XIMONLEE did a clear showcase
of how seemingly incompatible worlds can beautifully collide.
CHRISTOPHER RAEBURN
Christopher Raeburn became best known for his compilation, and recycling of military fabrics, in particular for using de-commissioned parachutes in his outerwear. As well as this, Raeburn sources his fabrics from traceable organic suppliers. The ‘Re-made’ philosophy is still a very big part of his design and development process, and it played a strong part in guiding his AW17 collection. With its strong military emphasis, khaki, navy, grey, and black were the main colours seen coming down the catwalk, with hints of camouflage incorporated into multiple designs. Along with using fabric from old parachutes as mentioned he did in the past, this time the pieces were also REMADE items that originally served as bomb disposal suits for the British Army. Camouflage, Danish army blankets were stitched onto duffle coats in a patchwork like design, and the signature parachute material was used to make the sleeves of sweatshirts and jackets. The texturized multiplicity in grey tracksuits with panels of waffle-cotton, flat-cotton, and fleece was irregular and remarkable. Towards the end of the show, a model appeared heaped with lots of bags, showing off Raeburn’s collaboration with Eastpack, the nylon backpack brand. The bags were all in camouflage, apart from one in the shape of a chameleon; the model wearing it proudly for everyone to see. Showing his sense of humour, Raeburn’s chameleon bag is just another way in how camouflage and a military theme can be interpreted into design.

We’re kicking off our first official gift guide of the season with some gift ideas for creatives! I did things a bit differently this year and asked for input through Instagram stories – and you guys all had some really great suggestions! We’ve got a little bit of everything below, from books and art supplies to my favorite styling resources. So whether you’re searching for gift ideas for your creative friends or planning to send this gift guide to your well-meaning family and friends, hopefully you’ll find the perfect holiday gift below!
1 – 4 Styling Supplies: So many of you said you’d love to receive styling supplies and equipment as a gift! My favorite styling boards and backdrops come from One Stone West (I especially love their canvas backdrops) and Woodville Workshop. I also love using small ceramic dishes from Suite One Studio and The Object Enthusiast in photos to hold small things like cute paper clips, wax seals, and vintage postage stamps. Finally, a good telescoping tripod and light diffusers are essential pieces of equipment for taking beautiful photos. Plume Calligraphy and Angela Liguori offer some beautiful styling pieces, including vintage ink wells and glassine envelopes – you can also browse eBay for vintage ink wells! This handmade ceramic watercolor palette is both a beautiful piece of equipment and would look gorgeous in photos!
5 – A desk calendar is a wonderful gift idea! I love this simple black and white calendar from Our Heiday, but you can find even more calendars right here!
6 and 8 – Apple Pencil and Procreate Brushes: I heard from a number of calligraphers and illustrators out there with an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil on their holiday wish list! But if you’re lucky enough to already have those powerful tools in your arsenal, Isidore Augustine just released a brand new set of Procreate brushes just for calligraphers.
7 – Scissors: Every creative person needs a beautiful set of scissors, and Angela Liguori makes the most beautiful scissors on the planet! These Fiskars scissors are my go-to for everyday crafting.
9 – Gift Cards! I know gift cards can seem like a lame gift idea, but they have the potential to be a really personal and thoughtful gift if done well! A few gift card ideas: an Airbnb Gift Card to help your favorite creative go on a solo weekend creative retreat, a gift certificate for a manicure at a local nail salon (especially for calligraphers and stationers), And for someone just starting out might really appreciate a gift certificate to a high-end supplier like Artisaire (wax seals) or Pressed Paper (handmade paper), or even to Blick Art Supplies or a local art supply store.
10 – Artist Supplies and Equipment: So many options! Choose from shiny crafting machines like the Minc Foil Applicator or Silhouette Cameo (I have both and LOVE them!), invest in a heavy duty paper trimmer, or keep things simple with paint, paper, and pens. It’s the perfect chance to try something new, like this Artist Pad Collection from Legion Paper with twelve 9×12 drawing and watercolor pads, this Coptic pen set, or this watercolor set from Sakura of America. Look around for in person workshops in your area, including letterpress printing, screen printing, calligraphy, watercolor painting, paper marbling, weaving, macramé, etc. If in-person classes aren’t an option, look for online classes you can gift – or gift a Skillshare membership! I love the online weaving and natural dyeing classes from Rachel at Smile and Wave, and Simply Jessica Marie offers a range of online watercolor and brush lettering classes.

The Ultimate Guide to Gifts for Designers and Creatives
Designers can be hard to shop for (especially when “shopping” for each other). We like things like ampersands. We get excited about color palettes. We’re hyper-opinionated about our tools. And we really, truly, do not want another notebook. (Well, not unless it’s a really nicely designed notebook.)
