these two Stood Next to Each Other and then Shook Hands and it was over for me. i loved demarco and macon and so naturally, i am sooooo normal about them.
~ snippet from an upcoming fic ~
Benny loves it when Macon talks about trees. It helps him fall asleep.
Theyā€™re outside and standing up, so itā€™s not like he can just conk out, but he watches as the wood machine pulls a stump out of the ground, sounds like grinding, cracking bones following it up.
ā€œ...they can get pretty massive, too.ā€ Macon is saying, cigarette dangling out of his mouth, and Benny turns to glance at him, for a heartbeat. ā€œBut the Sequoiadendrons get huge. Bet you could drive right through one.ā€
Benny blinks, and realizes his mouth is wide open. ā€œWhat?ā€ He says, after a minute. Maconā€™s mouth tilts upwards, and his smoke moves with the gesture.
ā€œBet theyā€™ll all be gone, before Iā€™m even dead.ā€ He says, and itā€™s almost hollow. ā€œAround for millions of years and dead before Iā€™ll see one in real life.ā€
Bennyā€™s fingers are cold. He reaches out, takes Maconā€™s cigarette from in between his lips and brings it to his own mouth. He doesnā€™t think about the movement, just does it.
He can feel Maconā€™s eyes on the side of his face as he takes a drag. ā€œWhatā€™s seventy-eight times one hundred and twenty-nine?ā€ He asks, blowing out smoke. The first two numbers to pop into his head.Ā
Maconā€™s quiet, for a moment. Thinking. ā€œTen thousand sixty-two.ā€ He says, finally. ā€œWhy?ā€
Benny smiles around the smoke, but turns and tucks it back into the corner of Maconā€™s mouth, nonetheless.
ā€œNothing.ā€ He says. He loves it when Macon does math, too. ā€œWhatā€™s sixty-two times eight hundred forty?ā€
Macon huffs, and smoke blows out of his nose. ā€œFind someone else to do your times tables.ā€ He says dryly.

just finished annihilation and i think part of why i love it so much is because the environment is so rich you can smell it. the moldering tower, the soaking cypresses, the layers of disintegrating corpses -- can't you feel the rot in your nose already? the earthiness of it? doesn't the wet scent of mildew rise quick and unbidden from your memory? aren't you there already, halfway into the muck yourself? with that smell on your mind idle thoughts walk you transfigured alongside the biologist, consumed, subsumed, already a denizen of area x but her journey only halfway to completion. only time sits between flesh and compost, really, and decomposition is just a transferal of life -- the biologist knows this; the biologist awaits this. and, with that smell of end-mold already conjured, it's quite difficult to think of area x as any further away than your own backyard; of the biologist's fate as particularly alien to any of our own.

Day 11! Paddle steamer, ft. Coelytan
Tumblr media
ā€œHave you seen those newfangled iron-hulled wheel ships? Those blood powered steamers what halt for no manner of beast nor squall? It seems the dockyard folk have managed to squeeze one of those great steelway engines ā€˜neath the deck of a ship, at long last. Lot more money to be made in shipping these days since they expanded the locks at old Arnhest- boatsā€™ve swelled in turn, but I didnā€™t think Iā€™d live to the day sailinā€™s optional. The draftsā€™re shallow too- can go all the way from Kulske to Visennes by way of Coriol in winter if ye wanted. Used to be you had to stay in sight of coast and watch for coelā€™ans, all hours, every day. Now thereā€™s talksā€™ve opening regular lines all the way to Skjop. Thatā€™s bluewater- madness, even for a steel monster like that. Beasties canā€™t crack yer keel- sure. But theyā€™re creative. Last thing ye want to be on the high seas is stimulatinā€™.ā€
- Old Kriā€™Annan mariner, name unknown. Circa 825.

On October 2nd 1947 the paddle steamer Waverley was launched from A. & J. Inglisā€™s yard on the Clyde.
The Waverley is the last sea-going passenger paddle steamer anywhere in the world. She was named after the debut novel of Sir Walter Scott, but wasnā€™t the first paddle steamer to bear the name. The previous Waverley, built in 1899, had been requisitioned as a minesweeper during World War II and sank during the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940.
Materials were so scarce in post-war Britain that the new Waverley had to wait more than three months after her launch to have the boiler and engines installed. She finally entered service in June 1947, sailing a scenic route up Loch Long to Arrochar.
Ownership of the Waverley passed to the Caledonian Steam Packet Company in 1948. Between 1949 and 1964 she had a variety of winter duties, often replacing another ship that was being overhauled, or she was the spare vessel ready to cover for others in an emergency. In the main season, her routes were extended to include the Isle of Arran in 1953 and from 1958 onwards, there was also a cruise up the Clyde to Glasgow. By 1970, she was the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world. By 1971, Waverley was one of only two large excursion vessels left on the Clyde and was based at Gourock. In 1973, CSP became part of Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd
Waverley was sold on 8 August 1974 to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and refitted for the Waverley Steam Navigation Company. In 1975, she re-entered service on the Clyde, sailing at weekends from Glasgow and in mid-week from Ayr. In 1977, she spent a week on excurisions from Liverpool and the success of this led to over a month being spent on the South Coast in the following year. In 1981, she was fitted with a new boiler and embarked on her first full season of Round Britain cruising, with the peak summer weeks spent back on the Clyde.
In her 1990/91 winter refit, the paddle wheels were replaced and a major Ā£7m two-stage rebuild was undertaken in early 2000 and winter 2002/03 in Great Yarmouth with the support of the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Waverley continues to be maintained in excellent condition and is the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world, fully restored and painted in her original LNER colours. She now runs cruises and charter days out around the British Isles and in 2015 celebrated 40 years of service under her current owner.
I had the pleasure of going on the Waverley last year, boarding at Oban and spending a whole day crusing up the west coast to Knoydart where wehad a short time before heading back to Oban.
