This is no joke one of my favorite posts on this website. I remember really thinking it was cool when I first read it a few years ago, it really gets to the heart of the Hinrigh's... oddness in the greater context of the arc.
Thematically important Succession War characters' abilities are tied to their relationship with Kakin society and/or the Succession War itself. Every GSB is an explicit look into how each prince perceives their royalty (and the SW of it all), etc. While this depth has always been HxH's signature, only in SW are we seeing so, so many different viewpoints and themes explored through the Nen system itself.
Due to SW's minimal panel time and commitment to patience and stalemates, abilities are often the largest source of characterization, especially thematic characterization, Togashi can use for an otherwise archetypal character. 12th Prince Momoze's GSB, as an extreme example, provides most, if not all, of her depth. The story very clearly highlights to readers the importance of the exact mechanics of Morena and Halkenburg's abilities, devoting multiple chapters to building up and explaining both. Readers are meant to compare them in order to enhance our understanding of their characters, Kakin society, and what Togashi wants to say with this story. I think this is a distinct difference in Nen characterization compared to characters more fleshed out by their thoughts, choices, and effect on the plot itself. Characters whose abilities add to their depth, but do not form the basis of their thematic characterization. Characters like Gon, Bisky, Morel and Knov, many PT members, and... Hinrigh.
Hinrigh has not been framed as a character whose subplot will say something greater about Kakin society, or the grander themes of the arc. His characterization seems defined by his drive, efficiency, and intelligence. On the mechanical level, he is a plot-mover in the story, a breath of fresh air after volumes of intrigue and plotting. Meant to be a fan-favorite, well-crafted side character: some fun foiling with other characters, some clever moments, a distinct design with a cool ability. His framing does not beg you to read and reread into everything he does for thematic scraps like Morena, or Chrollo, or Halkenburg, or Kurapika, or Beyond, or Tserriednich.
....so what the heck is this guy doing out this ability? Turning doves into handcuffs like it's not incredibly symbolically loaded, just a pragmatic use of his ability? No hidden depth here, just turning a tool into food to be consumed by myself, thus turning myself into a tool to be consumed if needed......... what?????
Look all I have to say is that I think turning doves into hand cuffs is nuts of a symbolic statement. It haunts me like a dream I can remember. I want to comission art about this.
Also I called it: a new character will introduce a new nen dope ass nen power and then immidiately die. I would even argue the power is a masterwork of characterization. It cleanly explains his world view: he can only view his hands as tools for extended or specific violence, his only will could be harm. It's this limitiation of perception that makes him both the first to engage and the first to die.
Meanwhile Hinriegh personifies tools: cameras are patient and observant, guns are fickle and deadly, but doves and handcuffs? It makes my head swirl.
#hxh#hxh manga spoilers#succession war arc#hxh spoilers#hinrigh#he's driving me insane what does it MEAN#the foiling with Padaille???#it makes my head swirl#I saw this post again and I just love how you looked at the character#really got me obsessed with the arc for the last how many years dude

ok i know i'm the 101st person to compare the phantom troupe and the heil-ly family, but with each new chapter we get more and more to work with & i'm chewing on it 24/7 like drywall. let's talk fatalism:
so first of all shoutout to the number one champion of this theory, my main man nobunaga:
literally idk if the guy is in a nostalgic mood or what, but he will not stop yapping about the similarities and for that i commend him & his service
for the record, phinks & feitan don't seem tooooo convinced. phinks specifically points out that hey, actually, we aren't amateurs like these guys and we don't have some crazy genocide murderscheme going on. this much is obvious in the way the PT reacts to luini's insane murderfanboying with "huh????????" *stab*
the phantom troupe do not want to destroy the world, nor were they designed to- they were designed for a very specific purpose and that was to create an environment (a web, hah) that could lure in the big criminals they wanted revenge against, while being dangerous enough to keep the petty criminals out.
these are two very different vision boards!!!
....that nevertheless share some strikingly similar imagery
and we find even more parallels in their respective leaders: aside from the obvious biblical resemblances, morena and chrollo share a similar outlook on life-- more specifically, a similar outlook on death.
more seem uncaring about their respective prospects of survival. self-preservation is such an inherently human trait- hell, a trait inherent to the living- that the lack of any such instinct whatsover is pretty damn terrifying. it leads to a certain kind of alienation from humanity that we know at least chrollo has felt (when he says shit like "humans are so interesting" like damn get your head outta your ass you are one of them). it makes them striking and scary and unpredictable. fucking brocco li points this out:
he's talking about the troupe here, but he could just as easily be talking about the heil-ly. because once again, the mafia is the establishment and the heil-ly and phantom troupe are decidedly not. the regular kakin mafia looks out for their own self-interests, which can lead to unchecked greed but is also what causes them to not go around murdering civilians just because they feel like it.
think of the loss in profits!!
now, nobunaga seems to think of the heil-ly as a sort of prototype- unrefined spider. when they're first investigating the heil-ly hideout, he says "maybe a switch was flipped when one of their own was killed," [see figure 1 above] which is a reasonable assumption to make considering his own experience. but when we check back in with the heil-ly...
their reaction to losing luini is "bummer," before immediately talking about what abilities they should develop to replace him. and in the second panel, when hinrigh kills padaille, the guys who are supposed to be his comrades just.. run away. later morena mentions that those same members are now leveling up to get revenge on hinrigh, but it seems like that stems more from hurt pride and morbid curiosity to see what they can accomplish with their shiny new powers.
these mfs are singing a "let's go hunt the mafia" jingle
big contrast to the way the xi-yu react to the death of lynch^
now both the troupe and the heil-ly are known to have fairly blasé reactions towards death and violence and general in the past. and that extends to their comrades' fights:
shalnark and co play cards while uvogin get leeches injected into his veins, or phinks & co stand by and watch feitan almost get his ass handed to him by zazan in meteor city- before he starts taking things seriously, that is. but i think that comes from a genuine respect in their comrades' strength. like everyone knew uvo could handle the shadow beasts just like they knew feitan could handle zazan. the heil-ly also seem to enjoy each others company and have a great rapport while chopping up dead bodies... but i think they don't expect much from their comrades in the way the troupe does. i mean, it's like phink's says: the troupe doesn't take on amateurs. everyone in the heil-ly is an amateur (except morena) so i don't think their laissez-faire attitude comes from confidence in their own abilities- i think they actually just do not care.
this whole exchange felt sooooo spiders-coded. which makes sense: i mean plenty of them are fans of the spiders! i think yokotani (the lawyer) was deadass trying to get an autograph lol
one thing to note is that when nobunaga attacks terebellum, he assumes the reason the gang hadn't shown signs of confrontation thus far was because they were convinced they were safe- that nobunaga and hinrigh couldn't get to them. i think that's only half the truth: when hinrigh throws a knife at this guy (the heil-ly's "organ" whatever that could mean) he just thinks "huh i wonder how long this would take to heal," before being saved by an issue of shonen jump. then he gets chastised for being reckless and going against morena's orders to keep his head down, but it's all very unserious. then everyone just kind of wanders off to do their own thing.
can i also just say i was getting from real uvogin vibes from terebellum over here
again, i can't really make any blanket statements with information we have available. but my current outlook is that the biggest difference between the spiders and the heil-ly right now is that the heil-ly is what chrollo had initially envisioned for the troupe: remember the "i am the head but i don't matter and you shouldn't make choices with my life in mind" speech? i think this is what that would look like. we know that (up until yorknew), chrollo truly believed that everyone saw the spiders as he did. that he would have no value as a hostage. that they would all be able to accept his death and move on:
and this turned out to be a fatal flaw.
the levels of cognitive dissonance going on during this whole exchange...
he was soooo in hhis head about being above humanity in his own little conceptual space where life and death don't matter that he forgot to look around and realize not everyone was there with him.
there were some, like phinks, who were in line with chrollo's philiosophy. kudos to them ig. but there were enough people who wanted to keep their friend alive- and are still working their asses off to do so today!- that his plan failed. pakunoda chief among them god rest her soul. this moment was one of the first dominos that sent into into the downward spiral he's on today. because after all he invested in the spider, all he gave up for it, it's web is slowly but surely falling apart. he is losing one lifelong member after another in events he is either powerless to stop or has a direct hand in. the ethos that kept him in this purgatory where he could temporarily transcend pain and guilt and humanity is unravelling, and the people he loves (not all of them, at least) don't share in it, and if that's the case then they've been suffering all this time. and if that's the case then what the hell has he been doing, and what the hell is the point.
so now he's stuck on a ship with a group of people that are like his own but worse (and younger and stupider g'bless) lead by someone who's like him but at peace. (and also probably worse lol). having a breakdown because people might love him. also he's trying to steal a national treasure because this is a nic cage movie apparently hey how many words is this post again
TLDR; chrollo is loosing the idgaf war

Chapter 391 Breakdown
It’s finally here. After roughly four years, Hunter x Hunter is back in action, and boy, was there action in this chapter. Spoilers follow!
Chapter #391 is called “Clash: Part 2”, an unsurprising title considering the last chapter (released what seems like forever ago) was “Clash: Part 1”. I can only guess how long this Clash sequence will run. The series is no stranger to “part” chapter titles, which can be seen here. However, I would not be surprised if this sequence culminates in a major, all-out battle between the mafia families.
Clash: Part 2 kicks off with residents of Tier 3 reacting to the two soldier deaths caused by Hinrigh’s ability. It seems that, in accordance with Mizaistom’s speech in Chapter 380, the seeds of panic are already being sown, and the unrestrained behavior of mafia underlings is going to cause chaos on the lower decks.
One of the civilians calls for a doctor… Leorio?
For now, it seems that Lynch and Zakuro will be looking for Hisoka, while Hinrigh looks for Morena, using the yet-unnamed black-haired woman as a lead. This is all in line with Onior’s instructions from the previous chapter.
“While you look for Hisoka on Tier 3, kill Morena Prudo, the Hei-Ly boss!” – ONIOR LONGBAO, CHAPTER 390
We get some nice characterization for Zakuro and Lynch, as well as some expansion on Zakuro’s Nen ability. I do wonder if the time limit on Zakuro’s “blood scouts” means he will recall them early in order to conserve his own blood.
After this, we’re with Hinrigh for the rest of the chapter. He pays off a guard and does some nice detective work in order to figure out where the black-haired woman went. She entered a section of cabins that only has one entry point; as a result, it’s likely being watched by Morena’s followers. In response, Hinrigh decides to track who uses the entryway by means of a cat-cam.
I really hope this kitty isn’t in for a cruel fate.
Moving on, Hinrigh reiterates that the relationship between Tserriednich and Morena is not a good one. This is something that was brought up previously in Chapter 384. Tserriednich is almost completely focused on the Succession War and hasn’t been paying attention to Morena’s coup d’état. He even suggests making his own moves against Morena, and he may even have killed some of her followers after they used the Hei-Ly door.
Hinrigh goes on to make some peculiar statements about the Hei-Ly’s motivations.
The term “relegated to the shadows” was used previously to describe the role “second-liners”, illegitimate children of Kakin royalty who are scarred at birth. Hinrigh’s thoughts seems to be pointing toward a major class upheaval, with “what’s to come” being an attack on the Kakin monarchy. The curious part of this is both Onior and Brocco are also second-liners. Are they simply more loyal to the crown?
Next, we’re introduced to three new characters (yes, Togashi is still introducing new characters): Televares, Quorolle, and Padaille. In typical fashion, these characters are given distinct personalities right out of the gate, while also giving us some context on Morena’s ability.
It’s worth noting that this is not necessarily how Morena’s ability works, only how Quorolle believes (or perhaps, hopes) it does.
I don’t have much to add to the Padaille and Hinrigh fight. It’s another example of how creative Togashi is with abilities in this arc. We get to see how versatile Hinrigh’s ability really is. Padaille’s ability, albeit simple, adds an interesting dynamic to the fight, granting him a pyrrhic victory. Padaille’s death is pretty gruesome, but not distastefully so. It all adds to the drama and horror of the Succession Arc.
After the fight, Televares and Quorolle flee to report back to Morena. Unfortunately for Hinrigh, the fight has drawn the attention of the civilians. Again, we see the mafia conflict sowing seeds of panic on the lower decks. As Hinrigh worries about being held up, he thinks “Misha, I’m counting on you”, and that’s where the chapter ends. Misha could be another animal under Hinrigh’s control or perhaps another member of the Xi-Yu. We’ll just have to wait to find out.
