Handmade Healing: The Beginning
Warren Worthington III x Female Reader ft. Billy Hargrove x Female Reader
Summary: Jubilee is from Beverly Hills, CA. Billy Hargrove is from CA as well, plus they’re both teens in 1983. What if they were friends? Or what if Jubilee’s best friend was Billy’s girlfriend?
What if our destinies were predetermined? What if things just happen because that’s how life works?
Warnings: language, angst, mentions of sex, and mentions of self-harm.
Word Count: 2.2k
Author’s Note: I will finish this series even if it kills me. You can all hold my word against me. This is supposed to be around 27 chapters, so strap in everyone!
Mutant.
The word was something you thought about often. You were always scared, always worried people would find out. Realize you’re a freak.
No!
No— there was nothing wrong with you, but you needed to be safe— even if it hurt.
You had wings. Butterfly-like wings, but less delicate. They were purple, and no matter how many times you cut them off or shaved them down they always grew back, and they became thicker and stronger each time.
So you cut them once or twice a week and always wore a jacket.
Even though you lived in California, nobody questioned it, not your family, not your best friend, not even your boyfriend.
Besides, it’s Cali, pretty much anything goes.
Everything was going perfect for you.
And then it wasn’t.
-
Jubilation Lee, also known as Jubilee, was your best friend since primary school. She was bright, spunky, and full of energy— she got you out of your shell and made you social.
Her parents were like your second set of parents, always there when you needed them.
She lived in a much nicer part of town— Beverly Hills to be exact. However, she wasn’t like your typical rich kid from the hills— she was nice to everyone and partied harder on weekends than anyone you knew. You probably wouldn’t know she was from Beverly Hills unless you asked.
-
Jubilee was the one who set you and your boyfriend up. They had some mutual friends, and he seemed like the perfect guy for you— good looks, and he’d get you out of your shell when Jubilee couldn’t.
Billy Hargrove was everything most girls wanted— nice car, an even nicer body, he partied hard and had an attitude to match. You, on the other hand, were quiet, and if people knew who you were it was as “Jubilee’s best friend” or “Jube’s sidekick.” Once you started dating Billy you were then known as “Billy Hargrove’s girlfriend.”
-
As a wise man once said, “Young love— full of promise, full of hope, ignorant of reality.”
Billy’s dad cheated on his mom with his secretary and wanted a divorce so he could marry her. So Billy and his mom moved from their familiar home to the empty house next to yours.
This led to late night rendezvous, parties, and lots of sex. It was like a teen drama, minus the drama.
However, reality had other plans.
-
You walked into Jubilee’s house. It was quiet, so you took that as your cue to head upstairs into Jubilee’s room.
You knocked on the door. “Jubes, It’s me. I brought Jaws 2.”
The door opened and Jubilee stood there, hair in a messy bun and pajamas on her body.
“Jubes did you wear pj's all day?”
“Yeah, I haven’t bothered to change. I have to pack my stuff.” You set your bag on her bed, ignoring the state of her room.
“Where ya going this time?” The Lee family took random vacations quite often, so this wasn’t much surprise to you. They would usually be gone just for a handful of days, coming back with some souvenirs and stories to tell.
“You know how I like, take a bunch of honors classes and stuff?” You nodded. Jubilee was smart, something people never thought when they saw her, as they never looked past her bright clothes and curly hair.
Their loss.
“Are you going to DC for that one camp? I heard Allen Smith is going to that. Maybe you’ll see him there.” You noticed Jubilee’s eyes were glossy. “Hey, Allen isn’t that bad, plus you may not even see him!”
She quickly rubbed her eyes, “It’s not that.”
“Then what’s wrong?”
“I’m going to a boarding school in New York!”
“What?!”
“My parents really want me to go. Uh, one of our teachers recommended me to the headmaster and he wants me to enroll as soon as possible. My parents think it’s a good opportunity for me. Meet new people, see new things, stuff like that.”
“But… but... you… You can’t leave Jubes!”
“I have to.”
“Why? Why do you have to go to some boarding school all the way on the other side of the country? Our school is just fine and if your parents have a problem with it they can just wait and send you to some fancy Ivy League college.”
“It’s not like I wanna leave! It’s just… It’s just what’s best. I’m sorry.” You nodded, unsure what to say. Your best friend was leaving you for New York.
“You’ll visit, right...? They, they let you come home for like summer and Christmas?”
“Of course! Of course, I’ll visit. Don’t want me getting pasty do we?” You smiled a little at her joke, a bit happier that she wouldn’t be gone forever.
-
Yet Jubilee never visited. Not for Thanksgiving, and not for Christmas.
She never called or wrote letters either. It was like she just wanted to vanish from everyone’s memory. Her own parents didn’t even mind they never saw their daughter! It made you sick sometimes, knowing they just shipped their kid away from everything she’d ever known— that they sent away your best friend.
Being the not-so-social-butterfly you were you spent more time with your boyfriend, Billy. He’d gotten a job as a lifeguard, trying to save up for a car.
You, on the other hand, engrossed yourself in your studies, hoping to please your parents with a 4.0 GPA, as Jubilee’s school switching stunt made them upset you weren’t also recommended for some smarty pants boarding school.
So you were at the library, getting books and information for your physics project.
Placing a book back on the shelf, you saw curly, dirty blonde hair in the corner of your eye.
You turned around, knowing exactly who it was.
“Billy!”
“Hey, baby, your mom said you’d be at the library so I figured I’d pick you up.”
You squinted your eyes, “What have you got planned, Hargrove?”
He winked, “You’ll see.”
“Alright, just lemme grab my stuff.” You grabbed your bag and headed outside.
“Okay, close your eyes.” You do as he said and laugh a little, feeling somewhat childish. He held your hand and slowly guided you forward.
“Okay, you can open your eyes.”
“Oh my god… Is that?... Billy is that?...” You asked, mouth gaping.
He grinned, “Yep. Just got her today.”
“Oh my god! Oh my god! Congrats baby!” You have him a peck on the lips and open the passenger door.
“You can throw your bag in the back seat.”
“Billy this is amazing! But... why a Camaro as your first car?”
“Because I like Camaros?... Look, I’ve had my eye on this specific car since New Years. Plus I’m a good driver.” You nodded, a little skeptical, but trusting in his judgment nonetheless.
He started the engine and backed out of the parking lot.
Loud rock music blasted through the windows as you drove by people, making heads turn. It was a good feeling. Something you hadn’t felt in a while.
You were mindlessly bobbing your head to the music, facing the passenger window.
Billy glanced at you. He gave you a sad smile and put a hand on your thigh.
“You doin’ okay, (Y/N)?”
“Yeah, I’m alright.”
“Wanna stop somewhere and get food?”
“Sure.”
-
You only got a soda, but you stole a fry from Billy every so often.
“You going to Sarah’s bonfire next Thursday?”
You shrugged, “I dunno. I’m not really friends with Sarah.”
Billy scoffed, “So? I don’t think anyone going is really friends with her.”
“Yeah, but…” You sighed, “I don’t know... I’m not sure I’ll go.” Billy rolled his eyes.
“What?”
“You never go out anymore. Hell, we didn’t even go to homecoming this year!”
“You said you didn’t want to go to homecoming!”
“Yeah, but that’s only because I knew you didn’t wanna go.” Billy pursed his lips for a second before continuing to speak, “Look I know you and Jubilee were really close, but you can’t just shut yourself out from everything.”
“I’m not shutting myself out!”
“Then prove it, princess.”
You glared daggers at Billy. He knew you hated that nickname. He knew!
“Fine asshole. I’ll go to Sarah’s stupid bonfire.” You dipped a fry in your ketchup with a bit too much force. “There, see? I go out.”
He raised his eyebrows and feigned surprise, “Guess I was wrong.” He then ate the fry from your hand.
-
You got home before dark, however, your house was dark inside, meaning you were home alone.
You walked into your room and sighed and set your bag on your bed. You kicked your shoes off and laid on your back. You squirmed a bit, having some uncomfort.
Getting up, you headed to the bathroom. You turned on the light and locked the door shut, then you took your jacket off.
You admired your back in the mirror, “Okay so they’re not noticeable from under my shirt—” You took your shirt off and gazed at your shoulder blades. “Okay, I should shave tomorrow. Yeah. Shave tomorrow, that’ll be good.”
When your parents got home you told them you already ate and were heading to bed. They didn’t question it and bid you sweet dreams.
-
You pressed snooze at least five times, for it was a weekend.
You only woke up when your mother banged on your door repeatedly. “(Y/N) get up! Get up!”
“Just give me a minute!” You tied your hair up in a scrunchie, and changed your sweatpants for leggings, leaving on the baggy shirt you wore to bed.
“What do you want?”
“It’s the Hargroves.” Your heart was pounding. Was Billy okay? Was his mom alright?
“They were in a car accident. Billy and his mom are in the hospital right now—” You pushed past your mother and ran to the kitchen. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“To the hospital! I need to know if they’re okay!”
-
Your mom had a cow when she saw you take her car to the hospital, worried you’d get into an accident yourself, but you didn’t care.
After parking, you made your way into the hospital lobby.
“Um, hi. Hi. I’m here to see Billy Hargrove.”
The woman looked you up and down before responding, “He’s not taking any visitors right now. Only family can see him.”
“We are family.” You spat. The woman looked taken back and stuttered out an apology and his room number. You didn’t even thank her, you were so quick on your feet, hurrying to see if he was okay. And his car…
Oh god. He just got the Camaro— Unless it was his mom’s car. Maybe his mom’s car was in the wreck. Either way, it was a messy situation.
You slowed down and started mentally counting the room numbers— looking for Billy’s.
“333… 334… 335… 336.” Billy’s hospital room. You had no idea where his mom was, but that didn’t matter right now. You just needed to know Billy was alright. You couldn’t have someone close to you taken away, not again.
-
“Um, hi. I’m Billy’s girlfriend, (Y/N) (Y/L/N).” You awkwardly waved at the doctor.
“Oh, yes. Hello, I’m Dr. Marcus. We called your parents.”
“Yeah, I came down quickly as I could. Is he okay?”
“Billy will be fine. His biggest injury is a minor sprain in his wrist.” You tried to get a good look at him. He was sleeping, arm wrapped up, and a bruise on his face.
“How about I explain what happened outside?” You nodded and stepped out of the room.
“Dr. Marcus, what happened exactly?”
“A man went through a red light as Billy was driving. He t-boned their Ford Fairmont.”
At least it wasn’t his Camero.
“What happened to—”
“Where is he?” A deep voice asked. You turned to look at the man.
Great, he’s here.
“Mr. Hargrove, Billy’s asleep right now.”
“What is she doing here?” He sneered at you.
“We called (Y/N) up here. I’m telling her what happened to Billy and Helen.”
“I don’t know why she needs to be here! She’s just his damn girlfriend. All she does is cause trouble and get others blamed for it. Wearing her stupid jacket all the time, and getting her friend sent to boarding school.”
“That—”
“Don’t interrupt me.” You suddenly wished you were twenty times smaller, or that you could turn invisible.
“(Y/N), how about you wait inside for Billy to wake up while I speak to his father?” You scurried back inside the hospital room.
-
You tried to make out what they were saying, but you couldn’t.
It wouldn’t matter anyway, for Billy was starting to wake up.
He let out a groan, probably adjusting to waking up. “Hey, baby. How are you feeling?” He blinked a few times and tried wiping the sleep away from his eyes.
“(Y/N)?”
“Yeah, baby, it’s me. The hospital called. I came down here to see you.”
“Aw fuck.”
“What is it?”
“They called him too didn’t they?”
You didn’t answer; you didn’t have to. Billy knew they’d call his dad.
“God damn it,” He groaned.
“I’m sure he’ll leave after they give him some more info. You know he doesn’t stay too long for anything.” Billy just rolled his eyes in response.
-
Dr. Marcus entered the room alone. “Your dad’s leaving, but he’ll be here tomorrow to take you home.”
“I wanna stay here with my mom until she recovers. He doesn’t need to pick me up.”
“About that…”

what we lost in the fire, by Amy LeBlanc
fiction by Amy LeBlanc | second-place winner of the 2016 Blodwyn Memorial Prize in fiction, sponsored by Book*Hug
eight: what are you looking forward to?
I stand at the edge of the barn and watch the oak tree go up first. From where I’m standing, it looks like the tree is spitting its leaves, trying to save them from the wreckage. The trunk splits down its center, shuddering more leaves out into the air. Fall is a beautiful time for it all to burn. The fire spreads. The tendrils of smoke drift across the field and latch onto the siding of the farmhouse. Not long now. There are no more footprints lining the way from the oak tree to the farm, but now oak leaves litter the ground and the low riding smoke snakes between the two. I try to clean my hands, but the gasoline spreads across my palms and seeps into the fine lines. It pools under my fingernails and I hear the crackle of our radio from inside. A news report about colour blindness, I think. I think about what Grandma used to say as I watch the tree shudder in the smoke. We don’t know what it’s like to be the ocean.
one: what do you think brings you here?
Grandpa says the people in this town honk their horns to talk to each other; one short honk to say hello, three times to warn that police are down the road with breathalyzers, and one long for when the hockey team wins. Grandpa says we should honk our horn when we turn the blind corner just before the farm; that way whatever’s on the other side knows we’re there. Grandpa says you don’t want to miss something just because you didn’t listen. Grandpa says if you see a kid on a bike honking their plastic, clown horn, you better smile at them, too. Grandpa says they might squint at you from under the visors of their helmets, and you’ll remember when your muscles were loose and lanky like theirs. Grandpa says never forget that. Grandpa holds the horn down the whole time he rounds the corner. Grandpa doesn’t slow down, because he has flowers in the trunk and wants to get home to us as fast as he can.
two: what is the problem from your viewpoint?
Grandpa sweeps his hands across the maple tabletop and sends the funeral home forms floating down onto the linoleum. I think he wanted them to fall faster, like pots and pans might have. He wanted them to crash and dent the floor, but they just float down until they coat the floorboards like petals. I think he wanted Grandma to be cremated here at the farm, but the funeral home won’t let him. I don’t want him to know that I saw him throw the paperwork; I keep my eyes just above my Maya Angelou book. I used to close my right eye and walk around the house to see what Grandpa saw when he walked. He told me what he has is called Glaucoma and there was nothing we can do about it. I found the word in my science books and saw we could fix it if we went to the doctor fast enough. It wouldn’t go away, but we could make it better for him. When I told Grandpa, he said like hell I’m going to the doctor. know what they’ll do to me? they’ll take it out. i’d rather have a bad eye in my head than a bad eye floating in a jar. All I could picture after that was an eyeball floating in the center of a jar and Grandpa walking around with a hole in his head like an open mouth that never spoke. He rakes the forms up off the floor and walks out the door. I run to the window to watch him leave. The cat follows him out the door, and they leave two pairs of footprints in the snow. Grandpa’s footprints are straight and evenly spaced but the cat’s footprints snake around his like smoke tendrils.
three: what makes the problem better?
We had to burn the cat. Grandpa was turning the blind corner and didn’t see her in time to stop. He honked as he turned, but the cat didn’t move. The screen door creaked, and he came in with a brown lump in his arms. He carried her the same way he carried firewood; her straight body leaned against his arm and shoulder. Grandpa settled her down, packed her in hay, poured the gasoline and lit the match. My eyes watered with familiar heat and it all sounded like crackling leaves. We had just lost the chickens and their ashes were still dissipating. The smell coated my nose and wouldn’t leave, no matter how many times I blew into Grandma’s handkerchief trimmed with violets. I kept expecting to see it coated in black when I pulled it from my face.
four: and how does that make you feel?
I reach my hand into my pocket to feel for the metal angel that Grandma gave me. I feel its weight in my palm and trace the pressed angel’s shape with my fingertip. She kept it in her change purse and almost mistook it for a quarter a few times when she went to the store. I had to tug on the hem of her skirt to get her notice her mistake. Tugging on her skirt released a puff of old cigarette smoke smell from the fabric. I liked to think that I could associate a time and place with each iteration of smoke. It could have been from her cigarette, sitting at the back of my school gymnasium for the spelling bee. Or it could have been the smoke bouncing off the closed car windows when Grandpa was driving us home. It could have been the smoke dispersed when she took her scarf off at the front door. She used to say that she hated the smell of old cigarette smoke. I never understood why. Instead, Grandma loved the smell of gasoline. She kept her handkerchief tucked into her sleeve and sometimes loose tissues, too. I used to follow behind her, picking up the ones that dropped to the ground. I followed her trail of tissues and smoke.
five: how are you sleeping?
Grandpa asked me to crack eggs for dinner. We’d been buying eggs from the store since the chickens died. He handed me six eggs from the carton that creaked when he pushed the tabs back into place. Grandpa’s hands were big enough that he could hold four eggs in each hand. I took one egg and cracked it against the side of the chipped glass bowl. I half-cracked the egg, creating little rifts in the white shell and then had to peel bits of the membrane back to fully open it. The yoke hung in the center of the bowl, swimming in the rest of the egg white. I reached for the next egg when I noticed a spot in the bowl. A red smear like string clung to the yoke’s center. My stomach turned and I cupped my mouth with one hand and pushed the bowl across the table with the other. Grandpa noticed. it’s just a little blood. come on, you won’t even taste it once it’s cooked. Grandpa took the bowl to his side of the table and mixed the egg with a whisk. The red stretched into a thin strand pulled taut, then finally yielded, breaking apart and dissipating into the rest of the egg. I closed my eyes and waited for my stomach to turn itself right side up.
six: when did you start feeling unwell?
I keep the cat’s ashes in a box under the kitchen sink. I haven’t decided where to scatter them yet. She liked to watch birds under the oak tree; maybe I’ll scatter them there. I used to go down to the oak tree with Grandma. Grandpa had gone into the city and we were going to have a picnic. She held a basket of apples in one of her hands and my hand in her other. Halfway down the hill she took her hand from mine to cough into her handkerchief. She tried to tuck it back into her sleeve before I could see, but it was covered in red strings, each one wrapping around the violets, crystalline, like a mosaic.
seven: do you ever feel ashamed?
There was a girl named Jubilee who lived down the road from us. I told her that Grandpa died too, and she told me that everything happens for a reason. She said that her dad died in a motorcycle crash and that it was her fault. She said it happened because she’d lied to her mom about the cigarettes she’d stolen from her purse. She said my cat and my grandparents died because my mom and dad weren’t married when they had me. Her voice was gentle and lilting, which made me think that she really believed this. I took one of Grandma’s cigarettes out of my pocket, put it between my lips and left Jubilee making crop circles in the red gravel with the tips of her shoes. I walked back to the farm, and laid Grandma’s violet-trimmed handkerchief on Grandpa’s chest. I’m starting to understand why Grandma loved the smell of gasoline.

'Queen Victoria always liked sex...' Judi Dench and Stephen Frears on making Victoria and Abdul
Jessamy Calkin
2 SEPTEMBER 2017 • 6:00AM
It was a story that was crying out for a film. Queen Victoria, old, fat, bored, widowed and still grieving, had pretty much given up and was slowly eating herself to death. Her dissolute son Bertie was impatient to get rid of her so he could be crowned Edward VII.
It was 1887, her Golden Jubilee year, and she was bracing herself for the onslaught of tributes and fealty from overseas royalty. Britain had ruled India for the past 29 years and as a gift she was sent two Indian servants, Mohammed Buksh and Abdul Karim. Karim, a clerk at the prison in Agra, was 24. He came over for a couple of months and stayed for a decade.
Initially his duties were as a servant, but after less than a year he had become the ‘Munshi’, the Queen’s teacher (she learnt Hindustani from him) and official Indian clerk. Victoria was Empress of India and fascinated by the country, but had never been there. She became besotted with Abdul: there were daily lessons, a salary increase, portraits commissioned and he introduced her to curry, which became a staple on royal menus.
As her infatuation increased, her family and the Royal household grew increasingly resentful. Racism was fairly endemic at the time, and Karim had started to get a bit uppity. The Queen put him in charge of the Indian servants, gave him his own cottage, shipped his wife and mother-in-law over from India, put him in his own carriage on the royal train, and his father – a medical assistant in the Agra jail – was awarded a knighthood.
Abdul was devoted to her, but hierarchy was everything in those days. There was a rebellion in the Royal household and a stand-off with the Queen. (Even her beloved John Brown, despite his closeness to Victoria, had always remained a servant.)
It was a narrative with a lot of charm but it was bound to end badly. And it did. After Victoria’s death, Karim’s house was raided by Bertie and almost all of the many hundreds of letters from Victoria were destroyed. Karim was packed off back to India, where his health declined and he died eight years later, aged 46.
But no one thought to destroy the Queen’s Hindustani journals, a product of her daily lessons with the Munshi. And when writer Shrabani Basu was researching a book about curry she became curious about its prevalence in the Victorian household, and equally curious about the portraits of the striking Indian courtier in the Durbar Wing at Osborne House.
She discovered that 13 volumes of the Queen’s Hindustani journals were kept in the archives at Windsor Castle, and asked to see them. Then, in Agra, she came upon Abdul Karim’s tomb and tracked down his relatives – which led to the inevitable trunk containing his journals, and a whole new light was thrown on the relationship.
When producer Beeban Kidron heard about Basu’s book on the radio, she couldn’t believe her luck. Cross Street Films, the production company she runs with husband Lee Hall (who wrote Billy Elliot), pitched for the rights and won. ‘We wanted to do it from the point of view of Abdul, the stranger looking at the strangeness of court. And to be funny and accessible,’ says Kidron.
Cross Street teamed up with other production companies, including Working Title, to produce the film. Hall wrote the script and Stephen Frears was asked to direct. ‘He’s brave and irreverent,’ explains Kidron. ‘And I felt he would get the humorous, fable-like take on the subject.’
And Frears, everyone hoped, might bring in Judi Dench to play Victoria. ‘Nobody else made sense,’ he says. They had worked together on Philomena (2013), and Dench had famously played Victoria in John Madden’s Mrs Brown, the 1997 film about her relationship with the Scottish servant (played by Billy Connolly). So it was a nice conceit that, 20 years later, Dench might play her again.
Did her heart sink or leap at the idea? It cautiously leapt, Dame Judi Dench tells me on the phone. For several reasons. ‘I have sometimes been back to re-examine something, but not in film, only in Shakespeare. But I did think Lee’s screenplay was really very good indeed, and I can’t resist Stephen Frears.’ She was riveted by the story, and had already done the homework in her last foray as Victoria.
She cites a particular scene, when, to the consternation of the Royal household, Victoria took Abdul to a remote little house called Glas Allt Shiel, on the Balmoral estate, where she used to retreat with Brown, and to which she said she would never return after he died. ‘They don’t understand anything, those stupid aristocratic fools,’ she says of her family in the film. ‘Toadying around. Jockeying for position… They couldn’t bear me bringing dear John Brown here. Yet I was happier here than anywhere in the entire world. Oh, I miss him, Abdul. And Albert… I am so lonely. Everyone I’ve really loved has died and I just go on and on.
‘No one really knows what it’s like to be Queen. I’m hated by millions of people all over the world. I have had nine children, all vain, and jealous and at loggerheads with each other. And Bertie’s a complete embarrassment. And look at me! A fat, lame, impotent, silly old woman. What is the point, Abdul?’
‘It must have been glorious to have somebody to talk to,’ says Dench now. ‘Somebody to learn from, and to exchange ideas with. And she was proprietorial with him; he kind of belonged to her – I’m sure that just having somebody to relax with must have been wonderful for anyone in that position.’
Abdul is played by Bollywood star Ali Fazal, alongside a stellar theatrical cast: Tim Piggott-Smith, Michael Gambon, Olivia Williams, Paul Higgins, Eddie Izzard – there is even an appearance from Simon Callow as Puccini.
Kidron and Frears headed to India to find Fazal. After the audition, Frears said, ‘I can see Queen Victoria being quite taken with him…’, and Fazal came to the UK for a screen test, his first time in the country. Frears instructed him to watch Peter Sellers in Being There as a reference.
‘I remember reading Victoria’s letters,’ says Fazal on the phone from India, the ones that survived, and being unable to describe their relationship – was it love? Was it intimacy? Was it friendship, or maternal? There were letters she signed as “your loving mother”, or she would say, “I miss my friend,” and on one occasion, “Hold me tight.” Those are strong words for a monarch.’
There was no evidence that their relationship was sexual, but there was a romantic element to it. According to Frears, Victoria liked to be held: ‘Brown would lift her down from the horse and put his arms around her, and she liked that very much.
‘Anyway, she always liked sex. It was just the children she couldn’t stand.’
For all that Abdul was devoted to her, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a chancer as well. ‘What appealed to him was the intellectual stimulation they shared,’ says Fazal.
‘But there was a manipulative side to him too, and I still believe he was an opportunist, though I think it was called for to be an opportunist in a world that was not yours, in a country that was not yours. You’re going to have to climb up the ladder with constant obstacles and people against you, and it requires a lot of balls to do that; you have to be a bit street-smart.’
One of the best things about the film is the glorious sets. The court routine would be for the Queen and the Royal household to spend the late summer in Scotland, at Balmoral, then return to Windsor for the autumn, and move to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight for the winter and Christmas, then back to Windsor in February.
In the spring there would be a European sojourn – Florence, say, or Nice. The film was shot in India and the UK. Windsor and Balmoral were recreated at Greenwich, Belvoir Castle and Knebworth, but the biggest coup occurred when the film-makers were granted permission to film at Osborne House, which has never happened before.
This was the Queen’s seaside holiday home, which she and Albert acquired in 1840 (and which was given to the nation by Bertie upon her death in 1901), an Italianate house with wonderful gardens. It added a whole new dimension to the film, and the actors were elated to be there.
‘It was glorious to be sitting at a desk and looking out of a window at the same view Victoria would have seen 100 years ago,’ says Dench. ‘Walking down those corridors and glancing about, you think, well the paint might have changed – but it was still really exciting.’
During filming, visitors to the house were treated to an occasional glimpse of Queen Victoria, or Bertie, which must have been surreal. They must have thought they had stumbled across a historical re-enactment, or an amateur pageant, except the actors were Judi Dench and Eddie Izzard, who had nipped down to the Durbar Room in full costume just to have a look.
Paul Higgins, who plays the Queen’s doctor, Sir James Reid, was the only cast member with a build slight enough to wear real Victorian clothing. He relished walking to the set from his hotel every day, taking the old chain ferry and striding up the hill to the unit base in the grounds of Osborne House.
‘I always walked to the house in Victorian clothes much like Reid would have worn, over lawns that he would have walked over as he chatted to the gardeners – he was very interested in gardening. It was such a great way to get into character.’
Alan Macdonald, who worked with Frears on The Queen and several other of his films, was the production designer. ‘Osborne House would have been the most difficult location to recreate because it’s based on an Italian villa, and within it they created a sort of new fashion, which is a departure from the ornate heaviness and subdued nature of Victoriana wallpapers and textiles.
Windsor Castle and Balmoral were tricky enough, but Osborne House is a whole other world that hasn’t really been seen on screen before – the colours are like Neapolitan ice creams and sorbets, and it was all about letting in light.’
A designer’s job, says Macdonald, is to reinforce the narrative tone of the film. ‘It’s not just creating rooms. Finding the location is a challenge, as is finding the furniture, or building a garden in Hampshire – but the real challenge is in creating this sort of jigsaw puzzle, putting all these pieces together, and reflecting some kind of psychological aspect of the story.’
English Heritage was happy to comply, because of the obvious benefits it will reap from tourism. But there were restrictions. ‘We had people from English Heritage saying, “Don’t step there; no, don’t sit there…”’ says Dench. ‘And if you wanted to move your glass slightly to the left, someone would have to put gloves on and move it for you.’
Some of the furniture was very delicate, says Macdonald. Too delicate to sit on. ‘So you might have a scene where 20 people are meant to be sitting in a room but only three people can sit down. So there’s a bit, for example, where Olivia Williams [Lady Churchill, Lady of the Bedchamber and friend to the Queen] looks as if she’s sitting on a chair but, in fact, it’s a sort of crate.’
One of Macdonald’s favourite moments was during an outdoor tea-party scene in Scotland (filmed in a glen where some of The Queen was also shot), in which the Queen and senior members of her household were having a miserable formal picnic at a table buffeted by the wind. A car pulled up during the filming, the door opened and a high-heeled boot poked out. Eddie Izzard.
He wasn’t required on set that day but, says Izzard, he likes to be where the action is. ‘Film is my first love and it was one of the first scenes we shot, and I just wanted to be there – so I drove myself up.’ It was a cold windy day and Izzard lay down in the heather to keep warm.
He looks like Bertie. How did his casting come about? It was the casting director who suggested him, and Frears went to watch him do stand-up. ‘My character’s interesting – very damaged by his upbringing, and his mother blamed him for the death of Albert. But he was the only one who could tell her to f— off really.’
Bertie was one of Karim’s chief detractors. ‘Victoria was on her way out; she’s eating herself to death – she’s going to go in the next couple of years and the throne will be Bertie’s,’ says Izzard. ‘And then suddenly she gets a whole new lease of life; she’s got something to live for. So you can see that Bertie would be pissed off.’
Izzard gained 26lb to play the part, and was given a beard and a cane. He relished working with Frears and was already a friend of Dench, who often goes to see his stand-up shows. Accordingly, he arranged a show to take place in the Isle of Wight during filming, to entertain all the other actors and raise money for charity.
‘It keeps me match fit, and we all had this great sense of community – we’re on the Isle of Wight for a month – so I thought it would be fun for the locals too. It’s like the circus coming to town for one day. Where I grew up, in Bexhill-on-Sea, the circus never came to town. So if I can ever make the circus come to town, that’s such a good thing to do.’
Dench attended this event, and it was if the Queen herself had arrived, says Macdonald. ‘She is perceived as regal, but she’s so warm and open and amusing and irreverent – not grand at all.’
It sounds like a very entertaining film to work on. The principal members of the cast stayed in a small hotel with 12 rooms. There was much playing of Scrabble and other games. And Dench made them all watch University Challenge.
Frears stayed elsewhere. ‘I went to a holiday camp, which I rather preferred, but I could hear their whoops of laughter while I was there. Judi is very good at all that – she’s Brown Owl. She looks after everybody.’
Dr Reid was a key character. He was in permanent attendance to the Queen, seeing her several times a day, and became her trusted companion. He was a Scot who hated Scotland. Higgins read his biography, Ask Sir James, in order to prepare for the role. ‘Apparently he was an exceptional doctor. Unlike some of her other doctors, he really kept up to date. Victoria gave him time off to travel to London and visit hospitals and keep in touch with technology and learning.
‘She came to rely on him and trust him, except when he told her not to eat so much and so quickly. She had a gargantuan appetite.’ (In one scene, Dench had to munch her way through 27 boiled eggs. Everyone was very impressed by this.)
Queen Victoria died in Reid’s arms on 22 January, 1901, at Osborne House. She was 81. ‘She was a monster, but she was also rather brilliant,’ says Frears. ‘I admire her more and more.’
‘I grew up being very sceptical of Victoria,’ says Lee Hall, ‘but when I read more about her, I found she was a much more interesting character than I had assumed and I really fell in love with her. She was more broad-minded than all the people around her.’
After her death, the Munshi was allowed to spend a moment alone with the Queen as she lay in her coffin. Then, on the orders of the King, came the raid on his house and the destruction of the Queen’s letters. He returned to India, and the land that Victoria had given him in Agra, a wealthy and titled man, and according to Basu, spent his last days sitting by the statue of Queen Victoria and watching the sun set over the Taj Mahal.

Life and Times at the Hollywood Palladium

The Hollywood Palladium is a dance hall located across the street from the Earl Carroll Nightclub and two blocks from Sunset and Vine. The L.A. Times tycoon, Norman Chandler, bought the property from Paramount Pictures, when it was on Paramount’s back lot.
Gordon Kaufmann designed the Art Deco dancehall, which design was labeled “Streamline Modern.” He also designed the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills.
On October 31, 1940, the Palladium opened with its first entertainers being Big Band legend Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, and Frank Sinatra at the mic. I wish I’d been at that debut! Alas, it was way before my time.
So what is so special to me about this place? Let me spell it out for you. In the early 50’s, the popularity of the Palladium was waning. So, individuals and private organizations were renting out the dance hall. One particular group was some Jewish organization that sponsored dances for Jewish singles. The idea was to match Jewish males with females, thereby preventing their eyes from looking to date non-Jews and, God forbid, end up marrying a Goy. My grandfather made damn sure his daughters weren’t going to marry some straight nosed, Aryan males. My aunt told me he had moved the family from Echo Park to the Fairfax district so they would be situated in a Jewish Neighborhood. To cut the chase, my mom went to one of those dances and saw my dad. She mistook him for Sid Weller, who’d been dating my Aunt Norma at the time. As it turned out, it wasn’t him, but a man who shared the same first name.
If I may insert this comment here: Thank God I wasn’t born to a Protestant family! I would have had been named “Sid Morris, Jr.” I hate that name! It sounds so snow-flaky. I would have named my pet parrot “Sid,” but a boy?!
Now, to conclude my story: My future dad gave his phone number my future mom, and that’s how it all began.
The first time I actually saw the Palladium was in 1965. At the time, Sunset and Vine was just a vacant lot. They would eventually build some high rise there in the 70’s. I think that was where the NBC radio station once stood. The Boy Scouts of America were having a “Jubilee” on this lot, and my Troop had made a campsite there. Every time I left my tent, I would look up to see this giant billboard of bandleader, Lawrence Welk, decked out in a tux and waving a baton. In the early 60’s, he had a weekly television dance show, broadcasted live from the Palladium.
Later on in the 60’s, the Palladium featured the “Teenage Fair” every Spring. I attended it in 67, 68, and finally, in 1969. They sold merchandise for teenage consumers and set up stages where local bands played in front of a smattering of teenage audiences as they milled around. There was one band I stood in front of, at the lip of the stage, watching the guitarist’s fingers so I could learn their songs. The first song I ever played on my guitar was “Proud Mary” by Creedence Clearwater.
In 1975, I went to a New York Dolls concert and met my rock idol, “Iggy Pop.” You ever hear the expression, “Never meet your idols?” I was wandering around back stage. There were no security guards, so I sauntered nonchalantly liked I belonged there. Here comes a drunk Iggy Pop, who managed to say to me, “Hey man, you got a smoke?” I took out my pack of Kools and slipped him a cancer stick. He’d barely lit it when he said, “Bummer! Menthol! Well…I guess beggars can’t be…you know?” He slapped my left shoulder and waddled back to his dressing room. I’ll never forget that encounter!
In the 80’s, I attended various events. My bass player, Cash Cobra, took me to see the Kinks and, on another occasion, a couple of friends took me to see the Clash. On my 30th birthday in 1984, my beloved wife, Pamela, took me to see “Big Country.” The last concert I saw there was also with my wife. It featured the Ramones, Black Flag, and The Minutemen. I heard there had been a riot afterward, but we’d left before that.
The Hollywood Palladium looms large in my life. I don’t even know if it still exists. The last I heard was that the place remains under management of the City of Los Angeles.
I must say this: In the main hall, there hung a giant chandelier. The place was indeed intended for more glamorous times, not for a bunch of sweaty, punk rockers. I will always have fond memories of that place.
