The hours between me leaving Chris and Robert arriving seemed to fly by in the blink of an eye. I didn't get an ounce of sleep, even though the constant tears had overwhelmed and exhausted me. Every time I tried to close my eyes, all I saw was him. It was all too much.

Instead I spent the time, carefully and quietly moving the boxes from my room to the hallway near the front door, so that I could make a swift and quiet getaway in the morning. The apartment was leased semi-furnished, so there was no big furniture or bulky items to take that would cause us to slow down at least.

Robert arrived promptly at 7.30am with a Starbucks coffee in hand, which was welcomed with a grateful moan as I took my first sip. We chatted quietly downstairs for around 20 minutes before the removal men arrived and after instructing them to be as quiet as possible, it was only a small amount of time before we were packed and ready to go.

As Robert made his way to the car, I stopped in the doorway for a moment, taking a few deep breathes as I prepared to leave Chris behind. I knew I couldn't cry, I couldn't let the emotions get the best of me, at least not while Robert was there. It would cause too many questions.

I looked back into the house one last time, choking on the lump that had formed in my throat as I hung my keys on the hook next to the door. Taking a moment to look towards the breakfast bar where so many memories had been made, I took one last deep breathe.

It was time.

The door closed and with that, so did a chapter of my life.

The drive to the new apartment was short, with it only being a 5 minute drive from Chris' place. There was barely any time to think about everything I was dealing with in my head before we were unpacking the van again.

The apartment complex was tall and modern, surrounded by large windows for the occupants to look out onto the beautiful city landscape.

My new apartment was on the 12th floor, so Robert and I were incredibly grateful the lift was in service.

We separated from the movers and headed up to my new apartment. I know I should have been excited, but I felt sick and uneasy, my body trying to scream to me that this was wrong but I ignored it.

The door to my apartment was directly opposite the lift. The number 32 in big brass letters adjourned the big oak door.

I hesitated slightly, taking a deep breath before Robert gripped my hand and excitedly pulled us both towards the door, wasting no time before slipping the key into the lock.

He pushed the door open wide, revealing the bright, open space that was my new home.

"Welcome home kiddo." He said happily, giving me a gently nudge over the threshold.

Upon entering there was a door immediately to my left, open revealing a large bedroom and a door immediately to my right that boasted a modern, tiled bathroom. Directly ahead was a stunning open plan living room/kitchen. The oak counters and black amenities stretched along the left wall. A beautiful marble breakfast bar stood a few metres away separating the space between the kitchen and living areas. Two beautiful suede teal sofas with gold feet sat in an L shape facing a matching TV stand in the corner of the room to the left. Large windows spanned the entire front and left of the room, making it bright and revealing a stunning view of the city below.

As I stood in the middle of the room, taking it all in, I couldn't help but notice I could just about make out Chris' house in the distance. A stark reminder of the pain and misery I've moved into my new apartment with me.

Over the next hour or so, the removal men moved all of my belongings into the house, whilst Robert and I worked quickly to unpack each box. Luckily I didn't have too much stuff and the apartment was furnished and so it wasn't long before we collapsed onto one of the sofas for a well earned break.

"Thank you Robert." I sighed heavily.

He looked over at me with an expression of concern and raised a single eyebrow in return.

"I mean it Robert." I insisted, "Thank you for sorting this out for me. The place is stunning."

Robert raised a half smile and let out a small laugh.

"You're welcome kiddo. Whens the house warming party?" He asked with a smirk.

"Oh no! Not happening." I quickly added with a smile.

Roberts phone began pinging frantically, pulling his attention away from me for a few moments as he tapped away, allowing me to relax the fake smile from my face for a few seconds.

"Oh crap." Robert snapped all of a sudden.

"What is it?" I asked with concern.

"I'm gonna have to run, there's been some errors with scheduling that need to be sorted." He said quickly as he jumped to a stand and began grabbing his belongings from the breakfast bar.

"Do you need me to come help?" I asked after him as he made his way towards the door.

"No kiddo, it's fine. You enjoy your day off. I'll see you tomorrow." He exhaled and with that, he was gone and it was silent.

I felt like a spare part. It was all so strange and new. I'd gotten so used to there always being some kind of noise, wether that would be Chris pottering around downstairs or Dodger whining to come in my room. All those small things I didn't know I needed, until now.

I made my way into my new bedroom where I flopped down onto my queen sized bed. After no sleep and an exhausting few days, it wasn't long before my body slipped into a deep sleep.

I was awoken from my nap by a loud banging coming from the hall.

I rubbed my eyes roughly as I stumbled from the bed, attempting to make my way towards the door to investigate.

The noise grew louder with each step I took. As I reached the front door of the apartment, I peeked out of the spy hole on the door, trying my best to see what was going on. Unfortunately, all I could see was the elevator in front of my apartment and a small portion of hall on either side.

I had no other choice but to open the door and peer around the corner.

Stood down the hall, at the next door, was what appeared to be a man. He was wearing a pair of dark grey jogging bottoms and a light grey hoodie that was pulled up over his head. On his feet he wore what looked like white sneakers. Chris had a pair just like them.

I watched on silently as the man thumped his fist on the door again, 3 times. Each thump harder than the one before.

No answer from the apartment again.

The man hung his head and pressed his forehead against the door. His fist still resting upon the wood. I could almost feel his despair.

I swallowed the lump that was forming in my throat and fought every urge in my body to just go back into my apartment and hide.

"Excuse me, are you okay?" I bellowed down the hall.

The man very slowly turned his head in my direction. I could see the tears staining his cheeks from underneath his hood, although I couldn't see the majority of his face.

"Do you need help?" I called out once more, growing a little concerned.

The man began moving slowly towards me, determination with each step.

My heart began racing and I wondered if I should slowly back up into my apartment but I froze. My body siezed up and I was glued to the spot.

The man slowed as he neared me, coming to a full stop a few feet away. He lifted his hands up to his hood pulling it down to reveal his full face. Red, covered in tears and eyes full of despair.

"You left." Chris sobbed, more tears flooding his already blood shot eyes. "You left me."

Unless you’ve dwelt under a rock your entire life, you’ve probably heard the story of the RMS Titanic, which struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank on 14 April 1912, ending the lives of over 1500 of the 2200 people on board. What you might not know, however, is that there were numerous warnings given to the crew of the ship, that were all ignored.

First, the crew on a ship normally uses binoculars to look ahead, in case of things in the way, like icebergs. But they were all locked in a cabinet, and the key was in the pocket of an officer removed from the crew before the ship left port. Also, the weather was unusually calm, with no moon and clear air, and the cold water meeting the warm air gave off a light fog that made it difficult for the lookouts to see.

The weather conditions contributed to the production of an abundance of icebergs. The climate caused a higher number than usual, and many were concentrated in the Labrador Sea. Extremely active tides that month due to the alignment of sun moon and earth contributed to tides drawing the icebergs south into the Gulfstream channel below the Labrador Sea.

Added to that, the captain had ordered the ship ahead at full power, under pressure by the managing director, Bruce Ismay, because the White Star Line wanted to break a 6-day record for the crossing. They maintained full speed even in waters known to contain ice.

And last but certainly not least, over 10 messages about icebergs went unheeded by the crew. The tenth message the ship received was from the SS Mesaba, a merchant ship traveling ahead of them through the icy waters. The message identified a rectangle the Titanic was about to travel through, and read, “Heavy pack ice and a great number of large icebergs.” This message did NOT get relayed to the captain, however, because the radio operator on duty noticed that it did not contain the prefix, ‘MSG:’ (Masters Service Gram), which would have made it imperative he relay the message to the captain.

The final message received by the Titanic came from the Californian, who reported that she was surrounded by ice and had stopped. The operator on the Californian, in his excitement, addressed the operator on the Titanic with the informal ‘Old Man’ preface, skipping the required MSG, and making it an informal address. A terse response interrupted the message from the radio operator on the Titanic: “Keep out, shut up, I’m working Cape Race”. To cut this operator a little slack, he’d been ordered by the captain to ensure he delivered every personal message to the rich passengers by hand, which kept him extremely busy. Too busy to pay attention to the messages that might have saved them all.

These eleven messages all warned the captain and crew about the unusual abundance of pack ice and icebergs at and above the 42nd parallel. All of these messages went unheeded, and disaster inevitably followed.

Proverbs contains perhaps the highest concentration of wise advice found in the Bible. It’s personal messages from God relayed by the wisest man who ever lived. The proverbs give wonderful advice on how to make God your priority, to spend time with Him, to cling to Him. It goes on to advise us on how we can have success in life, lasting and real success. It warns us about the angry man, the lazy man, the miser and the fool. It tells us about pride and gossip, about taking the high road and considering your words well before they leave your mouth.

The promise we unpack today is a blanket and general promise, and is conditional to those who listen to God. It does not mean that every one of us will avoid trouble. In fact, Jesus promises the exact opposite elsewhere, that in THIS world you WILL have trouble.

In fact, I can tell you that living in or near Memphis TN is dangerous. All of us dwelling here know that this is not really a safe place to dwell. It’s not a place where we feel particularly secure, and it’s easy to fear the evil that travels our streets at night, with its drive-by shootings and gang slayings.

So, what does this promise tell us about being secure, and without fear of evil? As you look around in my town you see gold-rimmed Cadillacs and Lexus cages, Escalades and Lamborghinis, while you, like me, probably drive around in a second-hand, paid off old car or van. They flash Rolex watches while you wear a Timex or a bottom-end Fitbit. They have the mansion, you have the crackerbox. They seem to go through life with little care about the violence going on – they might even be part of its source. But this world is not the end of the story. We can go through THIS life with a clear conscience, with confidence that we and ours will make it safely into the next world. Where all that we accumulated in THIS world won’t matter.

Movie Review | Civil War (Garland, 2024)

I’d initially written this off based on the dopey trailer, but after hearing some of what goes down in the movie and seeing a large swath of the internet be extremely annoying in their dislike, I figured it was worth a look if it was pissing off these types. I’m gonna talk some shit here, so you can skip down at least a paragraph if you want to read something a little more substantive, but I suspect the reason these people have been so vocal about not liking this is because they were looking to have the movie parrot their views back to them in as didactic a manner as possible. We simply can’t have movies deal with political subjects without spoonfeeding you what to think in as blunt a manner as possible, and it’s simply unacceptable to capture something about a political situation that doesn’t involve spelling out who’s bad or whatever, and quite frankly I think these people would be better off rubbing one out to their copies of whatever political publication they subscribe to.

I also think a lot of these types are just bad at reading movies. I just watched a streaming show that much of the internet seems to be creaming their jeans over (that I actually mostly enjoyed) that balked at presenting anything resembling ambiguity or conflicting emotional effects and proceeded to drown any scene that might be remotely thrilling with an ironic musical cue so you would know what to think. The fact that this doesn’t do that and will present you with something that might actually seem exciting and try to implicate you in the proceedings is probably frazzling some brains. The lazier critiques of this have been saying this is afraid of having ideas or points on the subject, but I do think there’s something interesting here about the journalistic process, and the ethics of getting the shot, and the tension between reporting the facts versus the sympathy or disdain you might have for your subjects. This takes after action-packed wartime journalism movies like Salvador and Under Fire, and I think the latter has probably the best scene out of any of these movies illustrating this idea, where all the reporters watch the city being bombed from the comfort of their hotel rooftop. (I think this is also less neutral than some of its detractors are claiming, and instead playing it like The Battle of Algiers where those we’re sympathetic to can still do unsympathetic things in war.) Or the scene where they’re caught in sniper fire near some country side attraction turned roadblock, and the soldiers they talk to are being super condescending in answering any questions. One of the highlights of the movie has Jesse Plemons looking like a tactical Elton John but also being super scary, and the movie is, knowingly or otherwise, mining that dissonance for a surreal charge. I won’t spoil how the scene ends, but I laughed out loud, which from me is an endorsement. Maybe I was laughing through a good chunk of this, but that meant I was having a good time.

And the climax fucking rocks, the Western Forces going into DC, their tanks and helicopters mowing down any sorry ass Secret Service bastards they run into (see one of their limos get royally owned when an entire unit opens unloads on it), and eventually having to shoot it out in the White House. You know Garland was watching Black Hawk Down and going “This is so sick” and then awkwardly adding “…but also very serious” when his sourpuss viewing partner caught his reaction. It honestly feels videogamey to me, both the shooting game gunplay at ground level and the RTS-style overhead pans. The budget here (high for its studio but low for blockbusters) means that there’s a good amount of CGI assistance, but when it’s in the service of cool helicopter shit, I ain’t complaining. (I also think the lower budget influenced the episodic structure of the movie, which I again think works in its favour.)

With the gawking view of Trump… sorry, Offerman country and the queasy triumph of the closing stretch, this feels like a paranoid fantasy for a certain kind of liberal, like Red Dawn for MSNBC viewers. And it also kinda owns, if you’re okay for a filmmaker to go bozo mode on a potentially serious subject. I’d joked earlier that I would have been more inclined to watch this had it been called Trumpmerica 2025 or something like that, but the results are a lot closer to what I imagined.
