Summary:
"The Journey West" (Si-U-Chi) is the most widely read Chinese mythological novel, of which a story "Pachieh Wants to Marry" proved an especially interesting comedy. Formerly the "Marshal Tien-peng" in Heaven, the lustful Zhu Bajie had a secret date with a fairy girl against the heavenly rule and was sent down to earth. Horsing around a brook flanked by beautiful flowers, he was drawn by and would join 4 pretty girls in their rollicking games but all the people were frightened away by the appearance of an "apparition." Sorrily, he found all but Gao YuanWai's home crowded with many guests attending a party to enlist a groom for the daughter of the host. The ugly yet omnipotent Bajie managed to change into a handsome young scholar and was accepted. Regretfully he drank too much, returned to his original self, and was fobbed away with the promise of the sick girl to marry him later on. At the time, Monk Tang passed by in his journey to get sutras from the West. He ordered Sun Wukong to get the ghost punished. Wukong changed as a pretty girl instead of Miss Gao, and enchanted Zhu Bajie to be out of himself. At the important juncture, Wukong returned to himself and a scuffle followed. Bajie was defeated only to be saved by appearing as a girl to appeal to the compassion of Monk Tang. Suddenly the Goddess of Mercy descended from heaven and prevented Wukong from killing Bajie. Meanwhile she ordered Bajie to protect Monk Tang in his journey west to get sutras in order to offset his sin with merits. Moved by the kind suggestion, Bajie did his best in the journey consisting of a master and 2 disciples. If you want to know more of the details, please come to see this superb comedy.
