What Bolt Carrier Group Should I buy?
As the AR platform has gained popularity over the past few decades, there have been a myriad of companies popping up and producing quality parts for your AR project…and of course there are some not so quality options out there as well. One the parts that can have some varying degrees of quality and performance are the bolt carrier group in your AR rifle or pistol. What exactly makes one bolt carrier group stand out from another? We’re going to discuss some differences in bolt carrier groups and why you might want one over the other.
The bolt carrier group is often considered by many a stoner weapon platform aficionado to be the heart of the platform. I would argue the bolt carrier group and the selected barrel assembly to be the heart whereas the bolt carrier group is one of the heart atrium and ventricle. There is them spec variety of a bolt carrier group which includes an 8620 steel carrier assembly, grade 8 fasteners properly staking of the gas key and grade 8 screws for the gas key. The bolt itself if a true mil-spec bolt will be made from Carpenter 158 steel and have magnetic particle inspection and high pressure testing performed. This mil spec variety is considered the pinnacle of how a bolt carrier should be manufactured. But is that still true today?
So many manufacturers have started manufacturing bolt carrier groups with differences in materials, different coatings for lubricity and durability and even some of the physical characteristics have changed a bit for some of the parts and features of a bolt carrier group. The most hotly debated variant of the bolt carrier group has got to be the bolt itself and the material used. Many, many bolts manufactured today are not made of the standard C158 steel, but are rather manufactured from 9310. It is a hotly debated topic that 9310 is not as strong of a material as the C158 variety, but that argument has wained in recent years. If a 9310 bolt is properly heat treated, they say it can in fact be stronger than C158 steel. Personally, I have run either bolt styles and have not had a bolt lug shear on either variety of bolt material. Typically a 9310 bolt will have some sort of a nitride coating which adds to it’s strength and durability.
Coatings have also come into play and caused some arguments one way or another. A standard mil spec bolt carrier group will be a phosphate finish. Nitride finished bolt carrier groups are also super common these days and I truly prefer such a coating. Nickel Boron, PVD and TiN coatings have also become popular, although I don’t believe they offer much other than looks over a god quality nitride finished bolt carrier group.
So which bolt carrier group should you purchase? My recommendation is always one that is from a manufacturer know for quality parts. One look over at Brownells and you’ll have access to Brownells manufactured bolt carrier groups, but also those manufactured by SOLGW, Geissele, BCM, Spike’s Tactical, Aero Precision and many more. I would consider any of these quality for the job at hand. The advantages you will get with the higher ned offerings will typically be better fit/finish, maybe better quality gas key screws etc… but at the end of the day, the cheapest bolt carrier group will do the job for the majority of people.
