When you climb into the bag, the first thing you notice is that it's very narrow. Stretched wide by the frame, you really need to scoot in; already, there's not much room for motion.

The second thing you notice is the warmth. The bag is still open, but you feel no ventilation here. The plastic begins to cling to your skin in places. If you're particularly in-tune with your breath, you might notice that the oxygen in the air begins to deplete as your air gets recycled, unless someone is holding the bag quite far open and you're looking out.

The bag is sealed over your head. You can still breathe, for a bit. You review safety protocol. You indicate that you're ready.

You try to time your breath to get the most out of it that you can as the vacuum turns on.

And, after a moment, the bag begins shrinking around you.

Within seconds, you see the plastic begin to close in front of you, around you. It gets closer and closer, and it's harder to tell when each thought crosses your mind. Your nose is being pinched shut. There's enough flex to the pvc frame to struggle, but nowhere near enough to get out. This doesn't feel like being suspended, it feels like being compressed.

In fact, you remember something about how pressure differentials work in this moment: From the outside, you know there are concave curves of plastic around your body pulling you into place, but this doesn't feel like pulling; the plastic is pushing you inward in smooth, convex arcs, with the pressure of the entire world behind it, as natural as muscles in a throat closing to trap a piece of food.

And you begin running out of breath.

You knew this would happen. You planned extra time for yourself before you signaled, to make sure they could get you out safely with time to spare. And yet, when you're used to the suddenness of a hand or rope coming off of your face or neck- the sudden acknowledgement and fulfilling of your need, and the reassurance that comes with that- the mere seven seconds... between tapping the floor, the vacuum being turned off, the clamps being removed, the opening unfurled, and the plastic pried apart around your face... they seem to stretch on far, far longer than they ought to.

And then you can breathe again, a rush of cool air against the inevitable dampness of the sweat that clung to the plastic.

PET or PVC?

LPs are alive and well. But time waits for nobody. There is a new way to make LPs and not with vinyl.

Oh and here is another subdivision of media. Two types of LP which is better?

Vinyl is PVC or Polyvinyl chloride which is a very common material. It has many uses. LPs have been made from it for a freaking long time. One issue with LP manufacture is the material is heated to melt and cooled to pull from the molds. That needs a lot of energy. Oh and it is made from oil yadda yadda.

PET is Polyethylene Tere-unpronounceable. It is used in pop bottles and such is a tough strong and easy to recycle material. Post consumer material source.

A company in Germany has developed a method of injection molded LPs using PET. Years ago in the US there were 45s injected using styrene which is a poor material with respect to physical properties and earned a poor reputation with respect to records. The PET process is promising and uses far less energy and can use recycled pop bottles.

So some "vinyl" is not vinyl. Is there a difference?

Two apparently identical LPs of Pop Music. One looks very shiny. The other less so. I listened to the audio tracks on my computer with earbud headphones. (Not high end at all but its what I got here)

They sounded different.

To be rigorous they were made in different plants with different machines and different stamper molds. That means it could have been different masters. Could have been. What I am emphasizing is the difference in sound may not be from the different material.

To my ear the injected one was better. I heard nicer depth and texture and clarity. My usual triple DTC.

I would guess that PET would last longer than vinyl in this application. The material properties are generally better to much better for hardness and strength.

Small detail watching the two spin on that 6 figure turntable. The green light reflection moves around as they turn. The thickness of the two records varies differently. There appears to be one thick spot on the injection disc and a couple smaller variations on the pressed one. Is that a warp or an actual thickness thing?

I would like to hear a PET LP on my system. There are not many available. I will keep a look out for one.
