Arcadia: An Exciting and Romantic Decline from Thinking to Feeling.
By Ross
Walking into a Tom Stoppard play (The Real Thing, Rock ‘n’ Roll), always sends me into an excited state, thrilled to be challenged and inspired to do some pre-theatre studying. His words tend to weave a wild web that makes one feel…

Featuring John Butcher, Travis Laplante and Sahba Sizdahki
All profits for this release will go to support those affected by the Christchurch shootings in New Zealand (Victim Support Manaaki Tāngata).

WHAT IS SOUND ART?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? (exercise #7)
It is very difficult for me to distinguish “sound art” and “music” without feeling disingenuous because I truly believe they are the same thing. If you put any music in the right artistic setting/context/venue, it would be received as an art performance/exhibition. If you put sound art in a club it would be seen as a subversive set of music. It’s entirely a matter of context—and of course, this isn’t something we haven’t talked about already, but I wanted to say it anyway because I constantly find myself coming back to this idea. I also think that maybe “sound art” has become a term out of necessity, since some people aren’t as well-versed in avant-garde/experimental/“out-there” music, and if you present a performance as “art that uses sound as its main medium” as opposed to an “experimental music performance” (just two descriptive examples off the top of my head) the inexperienced audience is going to be immediately more receptive to it and possibly listen much deeper than they would otherwise. I also think that from the artists’ perspective, “music” can have a lot of rigid connotations (unfortunately) and referring to an auditory work as “sound art” can be more freeing and open up new avenues of musical/sonic exploration/experimentation.
Personally, I think we should just be more inclusive with the term “music.” There are literally countless amounts of records that could be presented as both art and music, depending on who you’re talking to and what the context is (as I mentioned earlier)—and there are tons of installations, multimedia performances, etc. that have incredible musical value. But since I have to define Sound Art: I would say it is the utilization of specific sounds, acoustics, instruments, and/or objects to create an sonic experience, usually with a specific thesis or intended effect. A sound artist can use anything—extended instrument techniques, amplified sounds, electronics, objects, the list goes on. Anything that makes sound, or contributes to the creation of sound, is subject to use in a sound art piece.
There’s a great independent label in NYC right now called PTP (Purple Tape Pedigree: named after the limited purple cassette release of Raekwon’s “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx”) that completely destroys the distinction between sound art and music. Run by Geng AKA King Vision Ultra, a total old-school hip-hop head who also makes doom/drone/ambient/terrifying beats instrumentals, the label puts out the craziest experimental, forward-thinking music that is often performed in a way that effortlessly combines performance art/live experimentation/punk attitudes and feels incredibly fresh. Just wanted to give them a shoutout since I was thinking about a lot of the releases on the label while writing about how (IMO) sound art and music should just be called the same thing.

Ace AIR: Abby
Program: Ace AIR Location: Ace Hotel New York Date of Stay: 05.21.17 Artist: Abby
While spending the night with us, Abby put together a great mix of 12 tracks spanning just shy of 30 min. You can listen to and download Late Night at Ace here; playlist below.
Could B U by (DJ Taye X DJ Spinn remix) - Jessy Lanza Mansa Musa by Jlin Araurian Baby Boy Dance (Abby blend) by Nujabes + Fat Jon / Beyonce + Sean Paul Danza Jaguar by E+E 773 Love (Cyril Hahn 4am Bootleg) by Jeremih Venus As A Boy (AM97 Exploratory Edit) by Bjork Court Vision ft Evy Jane (Actress Remix) by Sporting Life Ntvm by Avril23 It All Depends on You by Ruth Etting Lillium by Elfen Lied Soundtrack Chirp by Embaci Another Day by This Mortal Coil
Abby (Mind Club/PTP), the genre-hopping DJ based between Detroit and New York, has an ear for the absurd. Over the last year, she's used her Soundcloud account as the home for a series of extraterrestrial mixes that run the gamut between contemporary club constructions, blistered noise, and sci-fi synth work, uniting disparate and asynchronous sounds under titles like "Probed: The Encounter" and "I Dance Like Shrek." She's a friend of the euphoric downers over at NYC label PTP, and their catalog gives something of an indication of what you can expect from an ABBY blend, disorienting and surprising sounds that threaten to suck all the air of the room before filling it back up with helium.
This May, our Artists in Residence program is curated by Discwoman. Founded by Frankie Hutchinson, Emma Burgess-Olson and Christine Tran, Discwoman is a New York-based platform, collective, and booking agency—representing and showcasing cis women, trans women and genderqueer talent in electronic music. Started as a two-day festival in September 2014 at Bossa Nova Civic Club Discwoman has since produced and curated events in 15+ cities—working with over 150 DJs and producers to-date.

Its a totally backwards and broken system. There is no incentive for law enforcement to be accountable because they personally don't have any financial consequences. Time to implement mandatory liability insurance and watch how fast that changes. Good idea or nah? What do you think?

Pity in History: Funny Fanaticism In War Against Art and Property By Ross Have you ever wandered into a majestic ornate house of worship in some foreign city (I’m a bit of an atheist church-seeker on holiday) and wondered how this came to be. Where did all this money come from to build this ‘temple’ to someone’s God?…

On the heels of the New York Times reviewed launch event last month, CHASM returns to start the year with a showcase of live performances and light installations. Collapsing Scenery headlines with a musical performance set within a live multi-channel video installation, marking the release of their new single and 7”, The Cat Looks At The King. Sandra Cordero (The Sperm Whale NYC), a veteran of NYC institutions such as Rubulad, Disorient and Warper Party, presents a live visual set, implemented through custom-coded software. Margaret Velvetand Laura Duvall, part of CHASM's opening line up, will present a new iteration of their movement-based duet. With his first solo album recently out on Sweat Equity, interdisciplinary performer and director Richard Kennedy will give a live vocal performance. Following Collapsing Scenery, Malory (GODMODE) brings a dark, minimal electronic set. Label mate Plǝbeian continues the night with a live set of driving, energetic beats. CELESTIAL TRAX (PTP fka Purple Tape Pedigree) released a new EP on Materia Records last month, and will close the night with a DJ set to lift the dance floor.
