The barrier properties of medical protective clothing materials are affected by many factors, including material type, fabric structure, oil and water repellency, etc.
(1) Types of materials
The type of material directly determines its barrier performance. For example, although traditional cotton fabrics are comfortable, they cannot block the penetration of blood and other liquids due to their high hygroscopicity. Although polypropylene, polyester, and other materials have poor moisture absorption, the non-woven fabrics made have high filtration performance and are currently commonly used in medical non-woven materials.
(2) Fabric structure
Different fabric structures will affect the pore size between the fibers, and the pore size is related to the barrier ability because the pore size of the fabric directly determines whether particles or microorganisms in the air can pass through. For example, DuPont's patented product Tyvek, the non-woven fabric made by the flash method has very fine fibers and a messy and dense structure. To pass through this structure, it must go through a tortuous path and have considerable movement in the lateral direction, so it can effectively block the penetration of liquids, bacteria, spores, and other microorganisms.
(3) Oil and water repellency
Changing the oil- and water-repellent properties of the fabric through post-processing or post-finishing such as coating and lamination can also improve its barrier capability. On the one hand, post-finishing such as coating and lamination can reduce the surface tension of the material and block the penetration of liquids, such as The oleophobic polymer structure on the surface of the current commonly used PTFE membrane makes the critical surface tension of the material low; on the other hand, the micropore diameter of the membrane is much smaller than the diameter of the liquid, which can directly intercept droplets.
