Hi, I'm a big fan of your work. Sorry if this is a dumb question, why kill the kitties? I notice it a lot in horror in general, and it completely takes me out of the story and just makes me feel bad for the cat. I feel like I'm missing something.
No a dumb question at all - and I knew I'd be getting some of this the moment we decided to include Poe's The Black Cat in TFOTHOU.
A brief history of the appearance of cats in my work:
HUSH - Maddie's beloved cat, "Bitch," escapes the danger of a home invader completely unharmed and is alive and well at the end of the movie. The last shot of the movie is Maddie lovingly petting the cat on the porch.
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE - Yes, a malnourished stray kitten dies within Hill House, only to be horrifically reanimated. This was done to show the horrors of Hill House, serve as a warning to the family, and foreshadow the deaths of several human beings (who would meet more horrible fates) later. Hill House is an evil place, and it killed and collected all sorts of beings... there are dead humans aplenty, and also phantom dogs, which Stephen and the kids hear several times and see in episode six. I'd argue that Hill House is an equal-opportunity horror show.
DOCTOR SLEEP - Azzie the cat is a great friend to Dan Torrance. Azzie also has a "shine" of her own, and can sense when patients at the hospice are going to die, and goes into their rooms to comfort them. Azzie is never once in any danger throughout the film and, we presume, lives a long and happy life.
MIDNIGHT MASS - All of the residents of Crockett Island, which include 157 people, a huge population of stray cats, and at least one particularly sweet dog, do not fare so well in this show. But nothing against the cats - everybody dies. The arrival of a certain evil creature marks doom for literally every living thing on the island (except for two people). And yep, it started with the cats, because they were plentiful and would not alert anyone to its presence.
THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER - we adapted The Black Cat, written by Edgar Allan Poe. If you're familiar with the Poe story, you know that it involves the horrible death of a cat, which then seems to get revenge from beyond the grave. This is Edgar Allan Poe's story - we did not write it. HOWEVER, we decided to make a small change to Poe's story. At the end of our retelling, we reveal that Jupiter the cat is alive and well (and still wearing the Gucci collar), and that the supposed violence against the cat existed entirely in the person's mind. So in this show, not a single animal is harmed AT ALL. I truly don't have anything against cats. I do tell horror stories... but that's about it! I hope it doesn't make it more difficult to enjoy the story, and thank you for watching.

A thing I find interesting about the forced politicization of detransition is the idea that now a person has transitioned, they must "live with the agonizing depression as a result of their body" - as though trans people (many of whom do have dysphoria) can relate with. But that brings up a point - the pain of people presumed not to be trans is seen as legitimate, while pain stemming from transness is seen as a failing, or righteous justice for... the crime of having discomfort.
I am very empathetic with the narrative of living in a body which makes you uncomfortable. That was my reality for around eighteen years. But why did I deserve that? And what about a detransitioner and me, a transitioner, makes us different? We have a shared interest, and it's very telling as to the reason there is a forced political divide.

Hi Mike!
Words can not explain how excited I am for The Fall of the House of Usher! I've begun rereading a lot of Poe in order to catch the little homages. It's looking like a great way to say Sayonara to Netflix!
I was wondering, the "Flanaganverse" has racked up so many "regulars" with Carla Gugino (whose role in Usher has me super stoked!), Henry Thomas, Rahul Kohli, and gosh that list can go *energizer bunny voice* on and on and on. Will we be seeing some of their faces again as you move over to Amazon (projects permitting)? I know that circle keeps growing, I mean you have freaking Luke Skywalker, but seeing the familiar faces in your projects really feels like coming into a family reunion which is why I ask.
Definitely! These aren't just some of my favorite actors, they're some of my very best friends. A lot of us are family now. And it doesn't matter where I am, I'll always want to work with my family. So yes, you'll see a lot of familiar faces on the various new Amazon series... and anywhere else I happen to be working.

Fear Is Fading Fast by River9Noble - Twobats/Bruharvey, complete. A companion to the above fic. Harvey and Two Face go to therapy and deal with their feeling for Bruce (especially after Bruce gets injured).
Just A Little Bit... by HaleHathNoFury (My_Trex_has_fleas) - Superbat, wip. Creepy, haunted Wayne family and Alien Clark, what's not to love? I was very excited when this fic updated multiple times!! I did some happy dances! And then started screaming "NO" at my computer when I saw the most recent update :) Very good fic, give it a read!

Patchwork Pod by Ktkat9 - Superbat, wip. More of the mer bruce fic! A Timothy has been acquired!
Foreign Object by audreycritter - Batfam, complete. Bruce gets seriously ill, and the whole family comes together to deal with it. Part of a series! I'm in the middle of the next fic of the series, called Developmental Milestones, and I'm enjoying the heck out of that one too!
borderline by TheResurrectionist - Batfam, wip. More of the batfam hivemind fic! The family is starting to get a hang of the shared mind thing, and go up to the Watchtower together, which is one of my favorite scenes so far :)
Brush-a-bye baby by iselsis - Batfam, complete. Bruce comforts a recently found Cass. Very sweet fic.
Bruce is - involuntarily, if he may add - the president of Gotham series by soyasauce - Batfam, with a little Superbat if you squint. Fics are complete. Gotham declares independence and Bruce is made president. Shenanigans ensue.
Dog the Dog - Jason Todd's Best Friend series by Acin_Grayson, Ao3time - Batfam, first two fics complete. Batman finds both Jason and Dog stealing his tires, and adopts both.
Through the haze by Mawiiish - Superbat, complete. Bruce is exposed to a new form of Black Mercy, and has trouble getting out of it. Clark helps him, and Bruce has trouble dealing with his feeling over what he saw in the Black Mercy dreams. Clark also dealing with Feelings ™ too. Lot's of good, good hurt/comfort and flangst (fluff and angst, heehee).

December 7th is the birthday of Harvey Dent, more infamously known as Two-Face.   (I always thought he would be a Gemini.) Happy Birthday, Harvey!
Tumblr media
Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Two-Face first appeared in Detective Comics v.1 #66 in August 1942. District Attorney Harvey Dent had the left side of his face disfigured by acid thrown at him by Salvatore “Boss” Moroni.  After his disfigurement, Dent had a mental breakdown and became the notorious villain, Two-Face.  Two-Face’s criminal activities often involve the number “two”.  Two-Face employs a double-sided coin, with one of the faces crossed out, in much of his decision-making.  The unmarked side represents “good” and the scarred side representing “evil”. Harvey Dent was portrayed on film by Billy Dee Williams in Batman (1988) and Lego Batman (2017), Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever (1995), and Aaron Eckhart in The Dark Knight (2008). These comics (and many more) are part of the DuGarm Collection at the University of Iowa: Special Collections. Batman v.1 #398 (August 1986), cover by Tom Mandrake
Batman & Robin Adventures  #2 (December 1995), cover by Ty Templeton

Justice League of America v.1 #125 (December 1975), cover by Ernie Chan
Detective Comics v.1 #581 (December 1987), cover by Jim Baikie
Batman v.1 #346 (April 1982), cover by Rich Buckler
Batman: Two-Face Strikes Twice!  Book One Part Two (November 1993), flip cover by Daerick Gross
Batman: Two-Face Strikes Twice!  Book Two Part One (December 1993), cover by Dick Sprang
