“Whimsy, whimsy, and more whimsy—that’s always been my aesthetic choice,” Vaginal Davis says, her voice soaring with joy at the very thought of it. After a whirlwind trip to launch the installation of her seminal 1999 work, The White to Be Angry, at the Art Institute of Chicago and a series of standing-room only events, Davis has finally returned to her home in Berlin, where she has lived since 2005.

“I don’t like to be dogmatic, didactic, or preachy because people don’t really listen. I’m an around the way girl, that’s what I am,” Davis says, tapping into her South Central, Los Angeles roots. A true American original, Davis’s origin story is the stuff of legend. Her mother, a Black Creole “femme lesbian separatist” then 45 years old, met her father, a Mexican-American Jew in his 20s, just once. Davis was conceived during a Ray Charles concert at the Hollywood Palladium in the early 1960s. Born intersex, Davis’s mother rejected the doctors’ orders that she choose a single sex for her child, allowing her the freedom to be both.

Coming of age in the heady days of 1970s West Coast punk, Davis took her name in homage to activist Angela Davis, schooling the clueless like a true revolutionary on every front. The originator of the homo-core punk movement and a gender-queer art music icon, Davis rose to underground stardom while taking on a diverse array of personas while performing with art bands including Black F*g, Cholita! The Female Menudo, the Afro Sisters, and Pedro Muriel and Ester (PME).

Les éditeurs européens demandent un soutien immédiat

Dans une lettre adressée aux ministres de la Culture de l’Union européenne, la Fédération des éditeurs européens demande des « mesures immédiates » de soutien à la filière du livre.

La Fédération des éditeurs européens (FEE) a écrit aux ministres de la Culture de l’Union européenne, le 7 avril, pour leur demander un soutien « immédiat » à la filière du livre. En amont de la réunion informelle des ministres de la Culture de l’UE du 8 avril, la FEE a voulu sensibiliser les pouvoirs publics aux « sérieuses difficultés financières et logistiques » auxquelles font face les éditeurs depuis le début du confinement.

Augmentation des budgets et des aides

« Les nouvelles sorties sont annulées (avec des conséquences terribles pour les auteurs, les traducteurs et les éditeurs) et les librairies sont presque toutes fermées. Le secteur souffre déjà d’une perte cumulative de 25% de son chiffre d’affaires pour 2020« , indique la FEE. Afin de remédier à cette situation précaire, l’association demande aux Etats membres de l’UE de leur apporter une « aide urgente et concrète« .

La FEE suggère de financer entièrement le programme Europe Créative, visant à renforcer la compétitivité du secteur culturel européen, et de flécher explicitement une partie de ces fonds vers l’industrie du livre. Elle préconise ensuite d’augmenter le montant de la garantie financière accordée par l’UE aux PME du secteur de la culture, afin de faciliter l’emprunt et l’accès aux liquidités pour les entreprises exsangues. Elle propose enfin que l’Union augmente ses achats de livres pour les institutions et les bibliothèques dans le but de soutenir la reprise du secteur.

Une réunion, pas d’annonce

Aucune mesure n’a été annoncée à l’issue de la réunion des ministres de la Culture européens. Les discussions ont tourné autour des conséquences de la pandémie de Covid-19 sur les secteurs culturels de chaque pays : annulation des événements (concerts, expositions, etc.), fermeture des musées, cinémas et bibliothèques, etc. Les responsables ont néanmoins convenu d’explorer des pistes pour « augmenter de manière significative la résilience des secteurs de la culture et de la création, autant sur le court terme que le long terme« .

Le ministre de la Culture Franck Riester a souligné que « le secteur culturel ne pourra pas survivre dans les prochaines semaines ni redémarrer demain sans un soutien public massif« . A l’instar de la FEE, il a évoqué l’utilité du programme Europe Créative et a insisté sur le rôle de soutien aux secteurs culturels joué par « les fonds de cohésion ou les fonds de garantie« . Il s’est dit favorable à une augmentation du taux de garantie aux industries culturelles et créatives. Enfin, Franck Riester a plaidé pour la mise en place d’un « pass culture européen » calqué sur le dispositif français, avec pour but de favoriser une relance par la demande culturelle.

Rotary Pakistan "Total Literacy and Quality Education in Pakistan" concert with Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in Karachi

Rotary Pakistan hosted a fund raising concert with world renowned singer Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at D.H.A. Golf Club Karachi for supporting Literacy and Education in Pakistan.  Rotary Pakistan Literacy Mission (RPLM) has adopted more than 100 government schools in Karachi in the first phase of their mission of “Total Literacy and Quality Education”.

These schools will be remodeled by undertaking extensive work on teacher training, child development and infrastructure development. They will be brought at par with private school to meet the ever evolving educational needs of our society. In his opening remarks District Literacy Chairman Sindh & Baluchistan PDG Iqbal Qureshi emphasized the importance of literacy in the region and the objectives of Rotary International. He highlighted, Rotary’s achievements and the contribution in improving the lives of the people in Pakistan.

Chairman, Rotary Pakistan Literacy Mission, PDG Muhammad Faiz Kidwai briefed the audience on the RPLM T.E.A.C.H. program, its working, goals and objectives. He highlighted the importance of the fund raiser which is held to support the literacy cause. He thanked the audience for their support and appreciated the services of the organizing partner, Rapido by calling their CEO Syed Kashif Rafi and RCK Darakhshan President, Waqar Ahmed Shaikh on stage and acknowledged their efforts.

District Governor Nominee, Rtn. Irfan Qureshi delivered the appreciation note and thanked all the partners, sponsors, Rotarians, Rotractors, volunteers and especially the audience for being there. The event was hosted by Mr. Salman Ahmed, CEO PME World and Ayesha Sana who emphasized the importance of literacy in Pakistan and also praised the efforts of the maestro Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for supporting Rotary and literacy in Pakistan. The maestro Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan mesmerized the audience who were present in thousands with his melodious performance.
