It’s an irrational fear , he knows , the same kind everyone gets when they’re going to the doctor , but this time’s like the final boss . Forget yearly checkups , this is  — A DENTIST. Shen Yuan can’t help but to wonder who sets out in their life to be a dentist anyways ? Are they like ‘ yeah , my career should be making people cry as I stare down the void of their throat . ’ ?
Ah, but he shouldn’t be so critical . If dentists didn’t exist , this wisdom tooth he’s got digging into his mouth would just hurt forever and who knows what would go on with those cavities. He’s seen this guy a couple of times for medical advice , and from what Shen Yuan can tell he’s pretty professional . It helps a lot , considering he’s fully self-aware that he can get a bit chatty , especially when his nerves are acting out. ( He’s surprised his dentists hasn’t knocked his teeth yet out of spite. )
He’s fiddling with his mobile phone , catching up on some web novels before he hears his name called by the nurse.  It sucks that he’s gotta leave himself on a cliffhanger , but the marvelous world of dentistry was calling. He bids her goodbye , ending her shift early apparently . At least there would be no one around to call him a wimp behind his back when they hear his pitiful cries along with the sound of a drill.
“ Doctor ,” he says amicably as he slides into the chair . Nervous laughter escapes as he nods towards Moonjo , “ Aha , this procedure , it won’t be so bad right ? ”

miisterbarba replied to your post: “I’m sure Mr. Barba and I can work something out”...
pls give me all the Rita/Rafi headcanons. I need them.
Li s te n. there are three times they could have been involved with each other: in college, early in their careers when they were both struggling, and later on as established lawyers with fierce reputations (they would have stopped any/all involvement, as a casual thing, when she switched sides. I have feelings and thoughts about that too b u t we are talking about something else rn so). puttingi t under a cut because it got so long because i have no chill omg:
College headcanons:
They’re both outsiders and competitive af because they don’t have the connections other people have. They both hve to fight it, and since the other one is the biggest target- the most vocal, the most competitive grades, the smartest arguments- that’s who they zero in on. At some point they’re made to do a project together (I picture an exasperated professor like “i’m gonna make them do this because i’m old and need my amusement”) and they realize that even though they’re alway competing, they also both respect each other? and Rita has these really organized notes andRafael asks her ot explain her system. so they are sort of friends but not really; they don’t hate  each other, so shit relaxes and they start having fun in class together. Then there’s some kind of class-widee vent that they both go to because this is how you build networks. At this event, this mixer or whatever, Rafael notices how she talks to everyone but doesn’t seem to have friends; he knows whati t;s like to be lonely so he brings her a beer and they talk shit and they end the night as friends. From this point it evolves over months - neither of them are easy to get to know or emotionally available- and even though they both have hook ups there’s nothing serious. I like the idea of them evolving until it just sort of makes sense for them to sleep together, like they’re so tangled up in each other already that literally no one thinks they aren’t sleeping together. and it’s like why weren’t we doing this before when it doe happen ,but one of them pulls back (maybe Rafi after a visit home?) and while the other is hurt, they’re too important to each other to let their whole relationship die? and they get gradually more serious about each other until the last year of law school they are officially together, but they end up breaking it off when school is over because they have different jobs in different places, and it is what iti s. they stay friends but they can’t be together and it’s hard but they’ll both survive.
Early career headcanons:
If they didn’t go to college together, they worked together in their first few years together. Again, their other-ness is a factor; Rafael is too scrappy, and she’s too female to be given much room. They end up taking the shitiest cases and the most grunt work, because that’s how it is. They develop their own codes for people in the office, like “Jesus Sandals wants to know if you can do this paperwork for him”, referring to the hippiest of the senior lawyers. Because they’re both driven and both on the outside, they’re pushed together and they bond over the shittiness of their job and the weight of their ambition. One time rita makes a mistake that costs them a case and she gets bawled out by a senior lawyer. She doesn’t cry, butshe’s fucknig upset  for the rest of the day, so Rafi takes her out for a good meal and just talks about stuff. Music, art. Boats. for one night they’re not lawyers, they’re just two people sharing a meal, and then dessert, and then coffee, and then finally Rita’s bed. and it’s good and simple and fine.
They end up serious for about a year, but their ambitions drive them apart. One of them moves firms and they see less of each other, but every once in awhile they share a meal, hash over cases, bitch about life, and fall into bed. It’s never A Thing that complicates their lives or careers; it’s a relief to be with someone who gets them.
Established lawyers headcanons:
They were friends in law school, and have been following each other’s careers even though they didn’t really stay in touch. Rita joins the DA’s office after Rafael does and works a different burrough, but they eventually have a crossover case. At first they work well, but they’re both used to stubborning their way to being right, so the end up at an impasse, strategy wise. It goes on for two days, and the tension between them builds. Rita finally says “ we needot owrk something out” and for some reason that makes Rafael’s blood boil, because fuck you his idea is the best one. he tells her that and she says no this isn’t Crime 101 this is actual law  and he’s not going ot charm his way to a win ,he has to use his head. They end up arguing and at some point they make out in her office but don’t come to a compromise. When they finally do, it’s at his apartment and they end up having sex on the couch to celebrate the anticipated win (FYI: the arguments were solid, but the jury was dumb). The next time they work a case together, the same thing happens, except they win. This becomes a pattern and people joke about how they have to sleep together to win. it’s not true, but people are dumb. They’re a thing off and on, but ultimately they realize for them to advance their careers they need to stop. There’s no hard feelings and they always respect each other’s work, even when they’re pissing each other off. At certain times down the road, they end up sleeping together; sometimes because it’s easy and familiar, sometimes for fun. Occasionally for revenge. It doesn’t affect their work-life, though; they’re both so good at compartmentalizing. It stops for real after Barba joins SVU and she switches sides; two ADAs sleeping together is one thing, but opposing counsel is another. They flirt like fuck still tho.
these turned out more like small fic synopses, and there’s a fourth option: they’ve been involved off and on since college. but it’s late and i’m tired so have thi. because Rita/Rafi is so my jam.
