puppy love | kang yeosang
pairing: kang yeosang x gn!reader
genre: headcanon; e2l (i TRIED); co-workers au, volunteering at an animal shelter; fluff; angst if you really, really squint, crack (i’m nOT funny)
word count: 3.1k
rating: pg-13
warnings: none; one smooch, mayhaps a couple swear words (lowercase intended)
networks: @cromernet
author’s note: happy belated christmas from your secret santa, @armysantiny !! i really hope you’ll enjoy this and i sincerely hoped you spent warm holidays surrounded by people you loved! <3 i’ve tried my very best with the e2l but mAN writing it is so much less fun than reading it. big, huge, thanks to @hwaightme for giving me wonderful ideas to use and delulus to ponder so i could write this down. ilysm <333
kang yeosang is one infuriating individual. for one, there is no way anyone can be so praised and well-liked by literally everyone. not a day goes by where you don’t wonder how his small smiles and quiet attitude could bewitch every last person he talked to. not when he would not bother to say hi in passing to you specifically, or resolve to small nods and monosyllables when talking. to you.
it seems that you are the problem.
you and him work volunteer shifts at the same shelter. only, he deals with cats while you deal with dogs so it wasn’t like you’d see each other that often, but it was often enough to know he doesn’t like you.
not enough to say hi, engage in any sort of coversation or, least of all, help out if needed.
until christmas.
the shelter was decked out, you spent a whole afternoon helping out with decorations, along with yunho and yena, two other volunteers.
and yeosang.
the man almost laughed his ass off watching you balance on a ladder in the most uncoordinated way possible to avoid falling. arms flailing around and everything.
he just stood there, an ornament in his hands, with his stupidly cute smile and watched.
you sigh, scratching behind the ear of the latest rescue dog that was brought in. you like baxter, he is chill and his black, shiny fur does not show signs of him having had to live out in the streets all on his own for weeks anymore. you like him best because it looks like he is listening when you ramble on, in disbelief of the rudeness showcased, about yeosang.
just then, a call of your name sounds in the air, the voice coming from the front desk of the shelter.
“see you later,” you leave behind baxter’s toy, leaving him with one last pat on the head, and make your way to the front where hongjoong had called for you.
you smile upon entering the reception area as it had been a joint decorating effort between you, yunho and yena. the result was looking very much like an elementary school christmas project, but you enjoy the general vibe. the senior rescuer currently behind the counter, looking rather preoccupied with a few papers, however, had just shook his head dejectedly upon seeing the final result.
“i’m sorry to be doing this, but could you take the christmas day shift?” he looks apologetic as he asks, rushing to explain. “it’d only be a half day, I promise that by one you can leave, we’ve got the staff taking care of the other shifts and the morning one’s the only one left uncovered-”
“no worries,” you interrupt his rambling. “i’ll be there.”
hongjoong smiles, looking relieved only for a second, before his face betrays further worrying.
“what is it?”
“nothing, i,” he sighs, shoulders sagging upon seeing the inquisitive look on your face. “yeosang will be working the same shift.”
defeat. dejection. betrayed trust. you groan dramatically, barely hearing hongjoong say that you’d already agreed and it would not be that bad.
surely it’d make for an interesting christmas.
when you arrive on christmas morning, the night shift staff gives you a tired nod and you offer him a smile in return, quickly wishing him happy holidays.
you waste no time in doing the rounds, giving all the cute doggos their breakfast.
while going over the duty checklist left from the night shift staff you hear the bell jingle in the front and roll your eyes.
when you finally decide to go up front it takes a couple of minutes before yeosang finally comes into view.
decked out in his funniest ugly sweater it reads “here comes santa paws” and has a cat wearing a christmas hat on it and with his long hair tucked behind his ears, he’s coming up to you with an awkward air about him.
you squint your eyes in suspicion.
“merry christmas,”
you’re floored, shocked, gaping like a fish looking up at your co-worker who for the first time ever has spoken to you first.
“cookie?” he produces a tupperware from behind his back, carefully removing the lid to reveal the most crooked, ill-decorated christmas cookies you’ve ever seen. some look slightly burned. a gingerbread man has three eyes.
you’re still gaping, not in the slightest understanding how it's possible that he’s spoken to you first, and also not noticing how ever so slowly a blush starts to creep up on his cheeks.
maybe you’re hallucinating, but it snaps you out of your trance.
you quickly reach for the gingerbread man with three eyes.
“thanks,” you mumble, giving him a small smile. “merry christmas.”
yeosang nods, closing the tupperware and disappearing without a word.
so you’re left there, cookie in hand, not knowing what to do with this.
you stay put, eating your cookie, until you hear a loud bang.
you rush to the source of it, finding a very flustered yeosang surrounded by cat litter. at least it’s clean.
you hold in your laughter, seeing him stand there, look around and try to come up with a plan.
“a little help?” you pretend to wipe away tears, facing his deadpan expression.
“you would’ve let me fall from a ladder,”
“you would’ve survived,”
you scoff, turning around to grab the broom and toss it his way. Yeosang catches it, just barely.
“really?”
“you scared my dogs.”
with that, you leave him to his mess, going to comfort and play a little bit with the shaken up puppies.
it’s not until a little later that you show up at the front desk again, noticing yeosang is already sitting there, typing away on the computer.
he’s also got the phone pressed to his ear, helping out someone on the line with cat duties, speaking with his honey voice and a small smile on his face.
it’s almost mesmerizing seeing him wear an expression that’s not his usual blank stare he holds up around you.
“if you’re done staring, we’ve got hongjoong’s checklist to go through,”
just like that, you feel like a deer caught in headlights, heat pervading your face.
“sure,” you shrug, going over to him to take a look at it, trying not to stare at his smug pout.
deep down, very deep down, you think about kissing it away.
if he weren’t so unbearable. but he is. so.
the checklist read “lobby Ikea chairs”
you both looked at each other, confused, until you noticed the boxes hidden behind the counter.
there was a post-it on it that read: “good luck! -HJ”
simply infuriating. you’d lost count of all the times you had to resist the urge to roll your eyes or drop everything and go back to your dogs.
there was no trace of the cold, odd yeosang you were used to.
he’d casually sat down on the spot where you were assembling the Ikea chairs, picked up the instruction manual and waited for you to hand him the screwdriver. bewildered, you had.
that was about two hours ago, before trying to follow instructions had gone to your heads, when it was only extremely awkward and quiet while he read the manual and you tried your best to sneak glances at him. to figure out what possibly could have been going through his head, of course.
now you were busy trying to one up each other in an undeclared war of who is the best handyman, clearly having lost the main aim: building the damned chairs.
“you were supposed to put in the screw first and then the little wooden thingy.”
“does it matter?”
“does your chair look structurally sound?”
“listen, if we start over-” pinching the bridge of his nose and scrunching his eyes closed with a sigh, you stop him before he could finish his sentence.
“like hell we are, it took us two hours just to get to this.”
“exactly,” his deadpan tone leaves you no choice but to sigh.
“fine,” you give in.
you were going to kill hongjoong.
because it took you only two hours to realize all it took for yeosang to distract you were his hands working on assembling furniture, his voice asking you to pass him stuff and his silence.
if you hated it before, now you appreciated the quiet moments where all you could hear was the faint music coming from the radio and the occasional bark or meow that prompted one of you to stand up and go check on your animals.
of course it was because you didn’t have to hear his disdainful reprimanding, not at all because it gave you the chance to throw glances at him and how a few strands of hair escaped the clips pinning it back and framing his face very nicely. no, not at all. you still couldn’t stand him. mhmh.
once you finally finish building the chairs, he helps you set them up in exchange for the older ones, now piled up in the storage room.
it’s almost second nature for you to hold up your fist for him to bump.
it’s just a thing you do all the time with your friends but now you’re standing there awkwardly, fist mid air, yeosang staring at you very lost, eyes going back and forth from your face to your hand and of course now he’s not going to want to see your face ever again and you feel embarrassment slowly and steadily creeping in the more you stand there until
he fist-bumps back
a little puzzled, seemingly asking if he’s done the right thing with one look, before dropping his hand and clearing his voice
you do the same
“gotta go see the dogs,”
“yeah, no, me too… i mean, the cats, yeah, so-”
he turns around and speeds away.
you follow him.
“so how’re the cats?”
yeosang jumps on his spot, almost dropping the little mouse toy he was about to throw for a kitty to catch.
“sleeping, mostly,” he shrugs. “how’re the dogs?”
you motion for him to follow and, surprisingly, he does.
immediately, he greets the ones that are up or go up to him with a smile on his face that you’ve never seen.
it shines brighter than the sun and you find yourself smiling as well, seeing him crouch down and pat dogs left and right.
then you get a grip, not for long
it leaves you pleasantly surprised how he follows while you introduce him to every dog, how he listens while you explain why they’re there, their stories, their backgrounds
but then, while you try to get some of the dogs to play with you so he could finish the round of greetings, he reaches the puppies’ enclosure and enters it to sit among them
and while he tries to play catch with a couple, one makes his way into his arms
and when he looks down at the pup, he’s wearing the most adoring expression
like a kid seeing snow for the first time
it’s wondrous and starry and happy
and you’re staring as he softly pats the puppy’s head and coos at it
“what’s his name?”
you almost don’t answer, too focused on the scene unfolding and having trouble locating the information he’s asked for in your brain
“i don’t think he has one,” you mumble, patting baxter’s head
“sleepy,” he looks down at the puppy. “cause he’s asleep while everyone wants to play, you know?”
you just nod with a smile, or at least you hope it is because what the fuck
why are you losing your mind over yeosang cradling a sleeping puppy?
why is your brain recognizing just now that your stomach’s doing cartwheels? why do you want to look away but also keep staring?
“what’s this?” you think he’s speaking to himself, but you still catch the words leaving his mouth as he enquires the toy another puppy has just brought him
then yeosang looks up at you, eyes wide as saucers, and your heart drops for being caught staring
he doesn’t say a thing, but looks down prompting you to do the same
it’s the mistletoe chew toy
yunho’s brilliant idea of getting the dogs christmas themed toys
yeosang looks away throwing it
“yunho,” you start, catching your coworker’s attention. “yunho’s idea, to get them those.”
you offer him a pained smile as he nods, scratching his head.
“seonghwa too, for the cats…”
“ah, really?”
“yeah…”
you want to bash your head into the wall
but the phone saves you, so you dash to the front, escaping the burning flames of awkwardness
it turns out to be a family wanting to adopt as a christmas present for their kids
so you say that yes, you’re open and yes they can come in whenever
when they do, yeosang has re-emerged and stands beside you, silent like always
this time around, though, you fear he’ll hear your heart beating out of your chest at the proximity
why’s he so close?
you almost jump to greet the happy family of four when they walk in to the sound of let it snow coming from the radio
“we were afraid it wasn’t going to stop!” the dad says, brushing off some snow from his hat
turns out they’d like to adopt a dog
it surprises you that yeosang follows when you lead the family in but you try to pay him no mind
the kids seem to be enamored with every dog they see, their parents giving them free reign
they’re still very polite and don’t cause much ruckus or yell too loud, which you’re grateful for
“could you tell us more about him?”
you’re about to turn to answer the question, if it weren’t that yeosang’s already at it
he’s introducing the kids to baxter
“he’s been here for a while, he’s very fond of our y/n and his favorite snack is carrots. he doesn’t like loud noises all that much. his past owners left him here because they could no longer take care of him, but he’s looking to find a new home,” he speaks as if he’s always been taking care of him, like he hadn’t just learned all that stuff half an hour ago
and he has his smile on, the one who could charm and warm up even the coldest of hearts
except one detail
you didn’t notice the little girl facing the puppies enclosure
until you hear her go “that one’s sleeping!”
but you can’t tear your eyes away from yeosang and his can’t help but hear his soft giggle as he says “his name’s sleepy”
yeah you want to punch a wall just about now
though you have to snap out of it quick
because you’re now letting this nice family adopt baxter and can’t fuck up the procedure or hongjoong will have your head
“how’d you know?” you ask, a little melancholic but over the moon to finally see your baxter go to a family worthy of him, as you both watch the car pull out of the parking lot.
“know what?” when yeosang turns to look at you, it’s with a shadow of a smile and curious eyes, an expression you’ve rarely ever seen directed your way
you swallow hard before speaking next
“that baxter’s fond of me”
his eyes light up in recognition
yeosang swore no soul shall ever know of this
but now he feels his resolution coming apart under your waiting eyes
because truth is, he’s noticed
he notices everything about you
from how you walk in dragging your feet when you have an early morning shift, relying on your cup of coffee, to how you laugh loudly at yunho’s jokes, always get your favorite snack from the vending machines at just about the same time he goes to get his melon pan he does wait for you to be done before going up to the machines himself
and how deeply you care for the dogs and how you seem to have a soft spot for baxter
maybe he’s even heard you once or twice rambling on and on to him about how you don’t get why he doesn’t like you
truth is, he sees you, and he likes you
so much
too much
he’s afraid of doing the wrong thing, say the wrong thing and make you hate him
but apparently his plan had backfired immensely
that’s why he insisted hongjoong gave him and not seonghwa the christmas shift
he even baked stupid cookies to give you
“ah, well…” yeosang has no idea how to get out of this one. “you just seemed to like him a lot from the way you spoke about him”
you hum, not really convinced
yeosang notices though, just as he notices the car of the afternoon staff pull in under the snowfall to free you of your volunteering duties
it’s not long before the shift’s over and he’s not going to see you until after the holidays
so, as you part ways to say goodbye to the pets and grab your coats, he musters up some courage
under the snowfall, he calls your name
when you turn around his dark hair is lightly dusted with snowflakes, only making him look more ethereal, and his eyes are determined
you don’t know what’s up with you today and why suddenly he’s making you feel like a teenager dealing with their first crush under his gaze
“yes?”
he comes closer, much more than he’s ever been, so close that you’re frozen on the spot
“just wanted to let you know that you can redeem your mistletoe kiss whenever you want to”
there’s a smugness in his voice, in his pouty smirk and a sense of accomplishment shining clear in his honey eyes
have they always been this mesmerizing?
his words and his warmth leave you breathless for just a beat too long, until your eyes fall on his lips
when you look back into his eyes, his are already looking at you, waiting
“alright,” you mutter lowly, pecking his lips once, testing the waters
he places another peck on your lips and, before you know, you’re kissing him
it feels exhilarating, and soft, so soft, just like his lips. just like the hand that’s come up to cup your cheek, bringing you closer, deepening the kiss.
when you come up for air you giggle, yeosang following suit
“may i also interest you in a coffee?” he asks, hand still on your cheek, gently brushing away snowflakes before they melt. you smile.
“i thought you hated me,” it almost sounds like a question and your brow furrows when he clicks his tongue.
“have you ever heard about the concept of quiet, introverted people who feel highly intimidated by awesome, funny, pretty people?”
you laugh, finally presented with the answer to the question that most replayed in your head
“take me on a date, hilarious, quiet, handsome guy”
he blushes and you know he’ll blame it on the cold, but only brushes his nose against yours
and to think you thought he couldn’t stand you mere hours ago
now he’s here, making your heart melt like snow upon touching his perfect skin

Hey darling!!! <3, hope your day is good, well, i saw your Seto Kaiba dating hc's and i read the "He just gets even better when one day he comes home with a ring" snippet, AND I GET SO HYPED FOR WEDDING/HUSBAND SETO KAIBA HC'S, so can i request "married Seto Kaiba hc's"? if not its ok, but i will be so happy if you do it
just a moment to appreciate this handsome man's beaut-
Hello lovely! My day is going okay, I hope yours is as well <3
• ───────────────── •
Content: Seto Kaiba x GN!Reader
Warnings: Talk of children at the end (I made sure to separate that section from the rest of the headcanons incase people don't want to read that part)
Notes: I've started my second year of college and I already want to rip my hair out. I hope these headcanons are okay <3
• ───────────────── •
Seto doesn't want to trouble you with planning the wedding. He has professionals handling it.
However, obviously I feel you'd want a say in the color scheme and your own outfit at your wedding. Seto will absolutely let you make those decisions, he just figured you wouldn't want to bother yourself with the wedding plans. It would most likely be you doing all the work anyway, he has a company to run. (Wedding planning can take more than a year in some cases for those who don't know, and the more lavish and expensive it is, the longer the planning will be)
You two enjoy your engagement though. As much as Seto says he hates the press, he loves all the attention you two are getting from the Japanese media.
I think a lot of people thought Seto would never get married because of how snobby he is, and how focused he is on his company and a children's card game, so he can't wait to show up to every rich get-together with his arm around your shoulders, telling everyone you're his spouse.
Your wedding was in a lavish area off the coast of Japan. Mokuba was Seto's best man, while (Yugi friend/your own friend) was your best man/maid of honor. Your vows to each other were so sweet and loving, Jonouchi had to rub his eyes to make sure it was Kaiba you were marrying and not somebody else.
Because Seto is a famous man, your wedding was most likely televised.
The night was filled with laughter, congratulations to you and Seto, amazing food, jokes, and all around happiness. It was undoubtedly the best day of your life.
Your honeymoon was overseas though. Seto finally pried himself away from his work, and was looking forward to spending two uninterrupted weeks with you in Italy (or wherever else you choose)
Your honeymoon is filled with romantic gestures, long nights (hehe), and a whole lot of lovin'
When you come back home, Seto goes to work and you give Mokuba all the PG-13 details. How Seto treated you to nice dinners, how amazing the view was both in the day and night, and showed him pictures of you and Seto and your honeymoon
Surprisingly, Seto is the first one of you two to post your honeymoon pictures. They become flooded with supportive and loving comments, Jonouchi's comments never failing to make you laugh
Some days you'll let off Seto's staff early and make dinner for you two and Mokuba, or get takeout. Depends on how you're feeling that night
Seto appreciates it either way, and is just glad to get some time to spend with you and Mokuba at the end of his tiring work day
Sometimes you and Seto will have the same idea though, and you'll both get takeout by accident. The funniest is when you both show up to the same place and are like "What're you doing here??" "I could ask you that too"
Rarely does Seto cook, but damn is it fucking good. If he has a day off and decides to let his staff go home early, he'll cook for you and Mokuba
Seto lives to make your life easier. Need someone to manage your public account because the press can be too much to handle? He's going on a search for a suitable manager. Feel lonely by yourself at the mansion? He's asking Mokuba to surprise you with Yugi and co. (begrudgingly).
He's still going to be busy with work, but he'll make it up to you by bringing you on work trips whenever he can. He'll book nice hotels for the two of you, and always makes sure that he's all yours after five o'clock.
He confides all of his work troubles to you now, and if you thought he was stressing before when you were dating, it's now a whole new level. You're locked in with him for life, and Seto is about to spill all of his secrets to you. You suggest a therapist to help him regulate the stress, and he scoffs at the idea.
"Do you know how many people would put a price on the information I'm telling you? Yeah, no thanks."
So instead, you make ways to help him relax. You tell him about taking a bath with the whole nine - a relaxing bath bomb, candles, soft music...and he scoffs at the idea. So instead, you decide to trick him.
"Seto, there's something called an epsom salt bath that you can soak in, it helps you relax."
"Isn't that for sore muscles?"
"And weren't you complaining about how sore your shoulders are?"
You manage to get your husband in the warm bath, poured epsom salt in there, then sat carefully on the edge of the tub and massaged his shoulders. He relaxed enough to where began to close his eyes, and you slipped a blue bath bomb into the water. He was none the wiser about what you were doing until the bomb completely dissolved, you managed to light a candle or two, and he only opened his eyes when you began to play some soft music.
"What...?"
"Is this relaxing, Seto?"
"..." He won't admit it, but it really is.
• ───────────────── •
The next section talks about children, but no actual pregnancy! So if you don't like the topic, no worries! You can skip it <3
• ───────────────── •
Of course, with (some) marriages, comes the topic of children. In the Japanese dub of the anime, Seto tells Mokuba that he'll be his dad and look after them once they're in the orphanage (in the English its just big brother), which means you are now technically Mokuba's "adopted mother."
In the original manga, Mokuba was also in public school and had a lot of friends there, so I like to think that he sometimes goes between homeschooling and public school. If things become dangerous and Seto thinks Mokuba will be kidnapped again, he'll pull him out of school. But once things calm down, he'll allow Mokuba to go back to school. Which means, you and Seto are the best parents at the PTA meetings and after school events.
Of course, if Seto can't make it then you'll go for the both of you. Anything Mokuba has after school where he performs, you record it for Seto (and future memories).
Doing this for so long will make Seto think about what it would be like to actually have a child with you. I think he would want two, so they could have the same sibling bond that he and Mokuba have. And with how dangerous the world is, what if something happened to him or you or Mokuba?
He thinks about it for a while before finally bringing it up to you to see how you feel. If you're up for having a child with him, then he'll be ecstatic and jump right on it. If you biologically cannot be pregnant, then thats okay, adoption is absolutely on the table. Mokuba is excited to know that he's going to be an uncle.

Review: Hundreds of Beavers (2022)
Hundreds of Beavers (2022)
Not rated
<Originally posted at https://kevinsreviewcatalogue.blogspot.com/2024/04/review-hundreds-of-beavers-2022.html>
Score: 5 out of 5
Hundreds of Beavers is one of the funniest damn movies I've seen in a long time. A mix of Looney Tunes cartoons, wilderness epics, video games, and old-time silent comedy, it's 108 minutes of non-stop, rapid-fire slapstick with barely any dialogue that gets going in the first five minutes and never lets up until the very end, constantly escalating its jokes into the ridiculous in ways that never failed to put a smile on my face. It's the kind of movie where, at nearly two hours, I should've gotten bored given my distaste for comedies that run overly long, but just as John Wick: Chapter 4 managed to pull off the feat of maintaining non-stop action movie energy for nearly three hours, this movie had me laughing out of my seat constantly. If this movie is playing anywhere near you, be it in theaters or on VOD, you owe it to yourself to seek it out.
The plot is simple. In the rugged forests of 19th century northern North America, applejack maker Jean Kayak loses his farm in a comic mishap and now has to survive in the winter wilderness with his limited wits, whereupon he eventually crosses paths with an army of beavers building... something a bit more elaborate than a dam. The only outpost of civilization for miles around is a fur trading post, where Jean both trades pelts for equipment and sets out to win the heart of the owner's beautiful daughter, who's also the trading post's furrier who skins all the beavers he brings them. From that setup, we get a constantly escalating series of comic mishaps and set pieces as Jean sets out to trap rabbits, beavers, and other woodland critters while they in turn try to outwit him -- not a difficult feat, as it turns out. This is a film that runs on cartoon logic where realism takes a backseat, with holes in the ground serving almost as a portal network in the forest and both Jean and the beavers building increasingly outlandish contraptions to kill each other with. This film doesn't have an MPAA rating, but if I had to give it one, I'd probably give it a PG-13, with some light sex jokes (specifically one involving the trader's daughter) but nothing explicit and all the beaver death presented in an extremely slapstick manner that's more Wile E. Coyote than Red Dead Redemption.
Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, the film's co-writer alongside its director Mike Cheslik, plays Jean, and he is an immediately larger-than-life figure, a parody of a 19th-century outdoorsman and hunter-trapper who starts the film cocky and dimwitted and eventually turns into a cackling madman as it goes on. Working entirely without dialogue, he delivers a phenomenal comic performance purely through his expressions as Jean is subjected to every indignity under the sun in his quest. The entire cast understood the assignment, but this was the guy who had to carry the whole film on his shoulders, and after this, I'd happily pay to see him in other films. No less important, however, were the titular beavers, all of them, together with most of the other animals in the film, played by humans in furry animal suits. If Jean is like Wile E. Coyote or Elmer Fudd in live-action, then they're like Bugs Bunny or the Roadrunner, their obviously human proportions adding to the sense of these creatures as mischievous little critters who seem to be enjoying the torment they put Jean through. The overall aesthetic of the film, shot in black and white with gleeful disregard for realism in its special effects, not only makes the painful slapstick that Jean is constantly subjected to feel, well, more slapstick even as it touched on some surprisingly dark areas (including the funniest scene of an animal getting skinned you'll ever see), it also creates the feel of watching a live-action video game, specifically a mix of an open-world RPG with Jean's quest and accumulation of gear and a Super Nintendo side-scroller with the fantastical environments he goes through in that quest. This was a longer-than-usual comedy, but it was one that, between its non-stop onslaught of jokes and the constant progression of its story, never got old or felt like it was spinning its wheels.
The Bottom Line
Great comedies are hard for me to review without giving away the best parts, and this was a great one. I expect everyone involved with this movie to get a lot of attention going forward, such was the great time I had watching it. This is probably gonna be on my personal "best of 2024" list when the year is up, and I'm telling you now: go see it.

Spent a bus ride yesterday reading a 1997 book by Gary Martin called The Art of Comic Book Inking that someone recced in the Cartoonist Co-Op server. I'm not the target audience for it (it's geared towards traditional inkers working in the print comics industry and is more for b&w comics imo) but it's an...interesting look into how the industry was back then. And by interesting, I mean bleak as fuck!
More below:
So I got curious and tried to find what the page rates for being an inker are like now, and had a look at this list of rates from Comic Book Resource, which are all self-reported by industry professionals.*
You'll notice 'inker' isn't even its own category here. The closest one is 'line artist' which is both pencils and inks, which for the sake of argument let's say is twice the amount of work as inking by itself. (It's not, pencils are harder, don't at me.) I took the average of rates from 2020-2022 for line artists and got $227/page, for both pencils and inks.
The very lowest rate of $100/pg in 1997 for JUST inking would be $190 today. If line artists do twice the work (again, an underestimate) by doing pencils too, that ought to translate to $380/page at the lowest end today. It doesn't somehow! Huh. Have a look through that rate list and you'll see rates even lower than $100/page in today's money (mostly from the usual suspects.)
Here's some more fun math:
Forget the $28k number above--he's including covers in this number, which pay differently. Say you do 22pgs/month at $100/page--that's $26,400 (1997)/$50,282 (today). Subtract a third for taxes** and your take-home amount would be $33,522 in today's money, which works out to a wage of $16/hr.***
At the high end of Martin's numbers, let's say 44 pages a month at $150/page for a total of $79,200, or $52,800 after taxes, and an hourly rate of $25/hr. Adjusted for inflation, that's $150,845 gross/$100,563 net/$48 hourly.
Average these numbers together, and the rates in today's money would be $67,042 net/$32 hourly.
Assuming line artists do twice the work, these numbers ought to be doubled, at $120k/yr or $64/hr.
But by the actual numbers we have, if a line artist works that same amount at the average rate of $227/page, that works out to $59,928 before taxes, $40,132 after, and an hourly wage of $19.
The kicker: the living wage in my metro area (same one Gary Martin lived in when he published this book, incidentally) is $21/hr, assuming no kids. Lol.
This is also assuming you can pencil AND ink at least 22 pages a month every month sustainably without destroying yourself, which is an EXTREMELY generous assumption. Also, no one gets health insurance working in comics, so take that into account with this shoulder-destroying pace.
I'm sure I'm mostly preaching to the choir here, and none of this information is really a surprise to me--oh comics is also a bad industry that doesn't page a living wage? shocker!--but it's interesting**** to actually be able to run the numbers on it to see how much, exactly, rates have stagnated. A lot, as it turns out!
Anyway, here's a little look into how comics pays, in case you're unfamiliar. It pays bad.
*this isn't even including companies like Webtoons and Tapas, who are fairly notorious at this point for underpaying and overworking creators. This is largely print publishing.
**the self-employment tax rate in the US is something like 15.1% and has been since at least 1990 but advice is usually to pay a third in quarterly taxes--easier to overpay and get it back at tax time than underpay and owe.
***based on 40hrs/wk, and I'm showing this number bc I think more people understand hourly wages than rates. I wouldn't include the amount for taxes in this bc if you're working an hourly wage you're probably not self-employed.
****LOUD SCREAMING
#artists and math DON'T mix he's right#I did my best tho#also afaik the bit about royalties is still true#possibly even more true#comics#comic industry#inking#inker#line artist#page rates#industry rates#living wage#late stage capitalism#also if for some reason you're going to whine at me about free markets please eat your own pants instead idc

Comic practice-Rough Drafts 1/3!
I spent my last week of 2022 and first month of 2023 starting my resolution of improving my comic art. I knew I wanted to finish it within January after Henson Co put out their cute “January is for Jareth” thing, and I was like “oh heck yes it is!”
One of the biggest areas I feel I am lacking in is composition/layout, dynamic poses, and pacing. I know the best way to improve on these areas is to keep working on them, and that is best achieved by drawing comics! In order to save myself from burnout, I decided to use a script I could recite from start to finish (songs included!), and therefore Labyrinth was the best choice. This scene in particular was fun to choose because of the fun variance in lighting, creating a great way to practice my values and contrast too!
What really interested me at the end of this was that you can see where I really get into the groove around pg 6 or so. Lines are more confident and the art cleans up a lot. It all still has a way to go before I would count it “print ready” though. The next step would be to go back over these pages and clean the lines up even further, fix anatomy or pose issues (plenty of those in the first couple of pages) and start setting up tones to make more cohesive scenes. By the end of the next step, it’ll be more or less “print ready” in black and white.Critique is more than welcome for these! I’m trying to improve!! One major thing that I can already see bugging me is jareth’s hair changing volume from page to page and definitely work needed on Sarah’s face…like…everywhere. I’m also looking to improve my speech bubbles here. I feel like I’m close, and I like what I did with the different styles for Hoggle, Jareth, and Sarah, but I feel like it’s still not totally “there”. That all being said, I’m pretty proud of myself for cranking out 21~ pages in around a month and around working 40-60 hours a week. I look forward to cleaning these up and making them look even better for my portfolio. I mean, the dream is to do this for a living, and even better if it’s working for Henson Co. I have my work cut out for me! 😄

How Co-living Spaces in Mumbai Encourage Collaboration and Community
Mumbai, the city that never sleeps, is known for its vibrant culture, endless opportunities, and diverse population. In this bustling metropolis, where living costs can be sky-high, the demand for affordable and flexible accommodation solutions has led to the rise of co-living spaces. These modern living environments, including coliving PG in Mumbai, not only provide affordable housing but also foster a strong sense of collaboration and community. But what exactly makes co-living spaces so special, and how do they promote a collaborative, connected lifestyle?
1. The Rise of Co-living Spaces in Mumbai
Mumbai is home to people from all walks of life—students, young professionals, artists, entrepreneurs, and more. With its fast-paced lifestyle, finding an affordable place to stay can be a challenge. This is where coliving PGs in Mumbai come into play. Designed to offer a combination of private living spaces and shared common areas, co-living spaces offer both flexibility and affordability. These accommodations allow people to live in close proximity to work, schools, and entertainment hubs, while also providing opportunities for socializing, networking, and collaboration.
Unlike traditional paying guest accommodations or standard rental apartments, coliving PGs in Mumbai emphasize a more holistic living experience, where community, creativity, and collaboration are central to the concept. These spaces are typically equipped with modern amenities and comfortable living arrangements, making it easy for residents to focus on their work or studies while being part of a vibrant community.
2. Collaboration Through Shared Spaces
One of the primary features of co-living PGs in Mumbai is the emphasis on shared spaces. These spaces, including kitchens, lounges, coworking areas, and event rooms, encourage interaction among residents from diverse backgrounds. Unlike traditional PGs or apartments where you often have limited interaction with your neighbors, co-living spaces provide regular opportunities to connect with others in a more organic way.
Shared Workspaces: Many co-living PGs in Mumbai offer dedicated coworking spaces where residents can work alongside each other. This promotes a productive environment, where you can not only focus on your tasks but also collaborate on projects or ideas. Whether you are an entrepreneur, a freelancer, or a student, having access to a shared workspace helps you build connections and foster new collaborations.
Community Kitchens: Preparing meals together in a shared kitchen is another way co-living encourages collaboration. It’s a chance to exchange recipes, share cooking tips, and create a sense of camaraderie with your housemates. Sharing a meal not only promotes socializing but also creates opportunities for learning about different cultures and lifestyles.
3. Building a Supportive Community
Living in a coliving PG in Mumbai means you are not just renting a room—you are becoming part of a close-knit community. This community aspect is often what attracts people to co-living spaces in Mumbai. Whether you're a newcomer to the city or someone looking to expand your social circle, these spaces provide a sense of belonging.
Social Events and Activities: Many co-living PGs organize social events such as movie nights, cooking sessions, fitness classes, and community meetups. These activities foster connections among residents and help build a friendly, welcoming environment. Regular interactions with like-minded people make it easier to form lasting friendships, find potential collaborators, and even develop professional networks.
Mutual Support: One of the key advantages of living in a coliving PG in Mumbai is the mutual support system that develops among residents. Whether it’s sharing work-related advice, helping someone with their studies, or simply providing emotional support, the community aspect of co-living spaces enhances the quality of life. In a busy city like Mumbai, where loneliness can sometimes be an issue, having a built-in support system can be incredibly comforting.
4. Networking and Professional Opportunities
Coliving PGs in Mumbai are often populated by young professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who are keen to collaborate on projects and share ideas. The communal environment promotes networking, and many co-living spaces even host events specifically aimed at creating professional connections. These spaces encourage people to not only socialize but also collaborate professionally.
Collaborative Projects: Whether it's working together on a startup idea, brainstorming solutions for a business challenge, or teaming up on a creative project, the collaborative spirit of co-living spaces helps foster innovation and creativity. Residents often share their expertise and skills, which can lead to exciting opportunities and partnerships.
Mentorship Opportunities: In many co-living spaces, you may find residents who are seasoned professionals or experts in various fields. These individuals are often willing to offer mentorship or guidance to younger residents. This mentorship can be invaluable for personal and professional growth, especially for those new to the city or the workforce.
5. A More Flexible and Inclusive Living Environment
One of the main advantages of coliving PGs in Mumbai is the flexibility they offer. Residents can choose to stay for short or long durations, depending on their needs. This flexibility is especially beneficial for people who may be relocating for work or education, as they don’t have to commit to a long-term lease.
Moreover, co-living spaces are typically inclusive and diverse, welcoming individuals from all walks of life. This diversity is not just about cultural exchange; it also fosters a learning environment where residents can challenge each other's ideas, collaborate across disciplines, and build cross-functional teams. The dynamic nature of a co-living PG in Mumbai encourages residents to think outside the box and approach problems from different angles.

Unlocking the Benefits of Modern PG Accommodations
As urbanization accelerates, students and professionals increasingly flock to cities in search of education, career opportunities, and personal growth. Amid this bustling environment, PG accommodations (Paying Guest accommodations) have emerged as an essential solution, offering affordable yet comfortable living spaces tailored to modern urban needs.
1. Understanding the Rise of PGs
PG accommodations have become a significant part of urban housing, bridging the gap between high-cost apartments and basic hostel setups. They cater to a diverse audience—students preparing for exams, young professionals starting their careers, and even individuals looking for short-term stays in the city.
Why PGs Are Popular:
Affordability: PGs are cost-effective compared to independent rentals.
Convenience: They provide ready-to-move-in spaces with essential services.
Community: PGs foster social connections among like-minded individuals.
2. Life in a PG: What to Expect
Life in a PG is about balancing independence with shared resources. Unlike flats, where tenants manage utilities and upkeep themselves, PGs come equipped with:
Furnished Rooms: Including beds, wardrobes, and study tables.
Hygienic Meals: Often included in the package, saving time and effort.
Housekeeping Services: Ensuring cleanliness without added responsibilities.
High-Speed Internet: Catering to online classes, remote work, and leisure.
3. The Role of PGs in Educational Hubs
Cities like Delhi, Pune, and Bangalore are home to countless coaching centers and educational institutions. Areas like Laxmi Nagar in Delhi thrive as educational hotspots. Here, PG accommodations like Famity Homez cater specifically to students with their proximity to coaching centers, libraries, and public transport.
Advantages for Students:
Focused study environments.
Access to academic resources nearby.
Safe and budget-friendly living.
4. PGs for Professionals: A Growing Trend
As remote work and flexible employment opportunities grow, professionals are opting for PGs for their convenience and affordability. For those moving to new cities for work, PGs provide a secure and easy transition without the hassles of leasing apartments or managing utilities.
What Professionals Value in PGs:
Proximity to workplaces and metro stations.
Quiet and comfortable spaces for work.
Networking opportunities with peers.
5. The Future of PG Living
The concept of PGs is evolving rapidly. Modern PGs are incorporating advanced features to meet the expectations of a tech-savvy generation:
Smart Access: Biometric locks and app-based management systems.
Co-Working Spaces: Dedicated areas for work and study.
Recreational Facilities: Gyms, lounges, and game rooms to unwind.
Sustainability: Eco-friendly practices like solar panels and waste management.
These trends indicate a shift toward co-living spaces, which take the PG experience to the next level by creating vibrant communities that prioritize collaboration and comfort.
6. Choosing the Right PG: A Step-by-Step Guide
Finding the perfect PG can be overwhelming. Here's how to simplify the process:
Research Thoroughly: Compare PGs online, read reviews, and ask for recommendations.
Visit in Person: Inspect the space for cleanliness, amenities, and safety.
Understand Costs: Ask about rent, deposit, and additional charges like electricity.
Clarify Rules: Check for curfews, guest policies, and usage restrictions.
Talk to Residents: Get insights about the living experience directly from current tenants.
Conclusion
PG accommodations have transformed urban living by providing an affordable, flexible, and community-oriented housing solution. Whether you’re a student chasing academic dreams or a professional building a career, PGs offer the stability and comfort needed to thrive in a new city.
For those exploring Laxmi Nagar, Famity Homez stands as a beacon of modern PG living, blending convenience, security, and a home-like atmosphere. As cities continue to grow, PGs will remain at the forefront of housing innovation, meeting the evolving needs of urban dwellers.

Project 3: Modernity, Cities, Technology, Ecology- Reading Report:
My chosen text for the reading report of this project is Rebecca’s Solnit’s, “Walking after Midnight: Women, Sex and Public Space”. After having read this text, one of the main concepts and ideas that I found interesting would be at the beginning when the writer comments about how women as far as in the 19th century experience “walking out” either on your own or at a considered time of danger, a thing considered “explicitly sexual”. For example, at this particular time period of England, women were given different names to portray how they are viewed particularly by men. Solnit, 2002, pg. 234 says that some of these names include: “prostitutes, streetwalkers, women of the streets, women on the town as well as public women”. This already indicates that the way women were seen as could be considered quite ‘derogatory’ and ‘vile’ especially because all they are really doing are normal, day to day tasks such as “walking” but it is being highly sexualised. Another aspect of the text which appealed to me would be that women are viewed as targets towards men because of what they wear and how they present themselves visually to the public. For instance, Solnit, 2002, pg 234 says that “women’s clothes and bodily confinements - high heels, tight or fragile shoes, corsets and girdles- very full or narrow skirts, easily damaged fabrics, veils that obscure vision”. It echoes the idea that in society women can’t express themselves in a way in which they feel ‘safe’. Some could argue that we live in a world where men tend to ‘sexualise’ and ‘objectify’ everything about a women when it isn’t necessary. All these factors then tend to contribute to an uncomfortable environment for these women in their everyday lives, the only types of women that were perhaps a little protected would be the ones that are “sexually serving one man and under his protection and sexual control”.
However, this perception still wouldn’t be considered right as in regards to modernity and modernism because it is still a global issue that surrounds many women in the world at present day. For example, women still find a need to have to ‘protect’ themselves, this can be interpreted through an educational website called UnWomen- United Kingdom, focusing on an article called “Safe Spaces Now”. Statistics state that “Over 70% of women in the UK say they’ve experienced sexual harassment in public”. This is quite concerning that even two centuries later, women still have to live in “fear” because anything they may say or do or even have to interact can be crucial danger for them. By relating this back to my chosen text, there was a significant aspect that strikes as important which was an event which happened to the author of this text itself. In pg 244, she commented that she moved to the area of San Francisco after being constantly sexualised on a regular basis in Paris. Instead of her situation becoming better, living in San Francisco in particular the nights proved to be a stressful and scary experience. Although, this very incident that occurred was during the day time in which “a well - dressed man (….) murmured a long stream of vile sexual proposals to me” in which the author panicked and “told him off”. Sadly to her horror, the man commented that she had “no right to speak to him like that” and “threatened to kill me”.
Again, this highlights the perpetual danger women face even when there are efforts made to try and stand up for yourself and what is ‘right’. Sadly, this type of violence still continues in society now with statistics saying that “Every 10 minutes, somewhere in the world, an adolescent girl dies as a result of violence”. It shows that women don’t have a ‘free voice’ in the world, there are clearly not equal spaces between genders. It is quite upsetting that women still don’t have the right to express themselves in a way where they feel safe and free whether in their own cities or countries. It would also illicit that even at present day, men have the ability to possess ‘ dominance’ and ‘power’ and these occurrences can even happen socially such as at work or even in public transportation which has been quite a relatable experience faced myself. Compared to the text “Walking after Midnight”, when the author focuses on “women’s clothes and bodily confinements”, it is still an issue that is prevalent today. Evidence that would back my point up would come from an external source cited “Modifying Perception: How clothing and Context influence the objectification of women” by Megan Sherman. (Sherman, 2022) comments that “objectification is defined as the ‘experience of being treated as a body (or collection of body parts) valued predominately for it’s use to ( or consumption by) others” with studies saying that “studies have focused on how skin exposure drives sexual objectification”. This reiterates the idea that no matter how a women dresses or acts, a woman’s bare skin is enough to provide ‘motive’ for a man and again is sexualised for no apparent reason rather then her bodily appearance.
Furthermore, the author argues that “clothing is a factor of victim- blaming in cases of sexual assault” as proposed by ( Workman and Freeburg, 1999). For instance, it is found that men who have sexually assaulted a woman “attribute more responsibility to a woman who wears sexually suggestive clothes”. It alludes that woman are essentially from the males point of view considered as asking for ‘it’ whether they are going out to an event or simply taking a walk just like the author in my chosen text. This also highlights the fact that society has not developed in a positive way because no matter what awareness is made or spoken about, the same things that happened in the 19th century are still troubling women today.
Personally, I believe that more should be done to allow ‘modernism’ to enter and be reestablished - once we recognise what has to be changed, that will be the only way for women to be able to be comfortable in their own ‘skin’ and ‘body’. The text recognises that the treatment/ and perception of women has always been rigged so therefore illustrates that it’s always been a wide-scale global problem that has to be tackled in the near -future. In terms of my own work as an illustrator, there is some relevance of women, nature and modernism especially in the module 3 project on composing a record track based on a classical piece of music. There are quite a lot of women in my Magic Flute by Mozart opera piece and when having a look at different illustrations of its interpretation, women are drawn in quite a dramatic and feminine way especially the ‘ Queen of the Night’ which can be seen through her makeup and costume. This could suggest that even as illustrators we have an idealised concept about how a woman should be viewed as or even dressed as. This would be different if a woman wore ‘baggy’ clothes or was illustrated in ‘baggy’ clothes because some could argue that less revealing clothes are least likely to attract male perpetrators. Therefore, this again instigates the idea that ‘clothing’ does a play a huge role in personal perceptions because it can change or alter someone’s view so is relevant to this module.

Girls/Boys Rooms Near Jaipur Colleges
If you’re searching for rooms for girls or boys near Jaipur colleges, you’ll find plenty of options that cater specifically to students’ needs. Jaipur, known for its vibrant student life, is home to several prestigious colleges and universities, making it a popular destination for students from across India. This influx of students has led to a rise in demand for student-friendly accommodations, including gender-specific rooms, PGs (paying guest accommodations), and hostels. Here’s a look at what to consider and expect when renting rooms near colleges in Jaipur.
Why Choose Rooms Near Colleges in Jaipur?
One of the biggest advantages of renting a room near Jaipur colleges is convenience. Staying close to your college not only cuts down on travel time and costs but also allows students to balance their academics and personal life more efficiently. Jaipur’s college areas are well-equipped with essential services like grocery stores, libraries, cafés, medical facilities, and public transportation, making it easier for students to meet their daily needs without commuting far.
For students new to the city, renting rooms near their campus also creates a comfortable environment where they can build social connections with peers. This is especially beneficial for students who are adjusting to college life away from home. Additionally, living in student-dense areas provides a supportive atmosphere conducive to studies and a vibrant social life.
Types of Rooms Available
In Jaipur, there are several options when it comes to finding rooms for rent near colleges. Here are a few popular types:
Single Occupancy Rooms: Ideal for students who prefer privacy. These rooms are typically fully furnished, with basic amenities like a bed, study table, wardrobe, and attached or shared bathroom.
Shared Rooms: This is a budget-friendly option that allows students to share a room with one or more roommates. Shared rooms are common among students looking for affordable housing and a more social living environment.
PGs and Hostels: Paying guest accommodations (PGs) and hostels provide meals, cleaning services, and often a common area for students to relax or study. Some PGs are gender-specific, catering only to girls or boys, while others are co-ed with separate floors or wings.
Studio Apartments: These are often pricier but offer more privacy and freedom for students who prefer a self-contained living space with their own kitchenette, bathroom, and study area.
Key Amenities and Features
When renting a room, it’s essential to ensure that the accommodation has amenities that meet student needs. Here are some standard features to consider:
Wi-Fi: A high-speed internet connection is crucial for students to complete online assignments, attend virtual lectures, and stay connected with family.
Furnishing: Most rooms come furnished with essentials like a bed, study table, and storage options. Some accommodations also provide bedding, making it easier for outstation students.
Meals and Mess Facilities: Some hostels and PGs offer meal plans, making it convenient for students who don’t want to worry about cooking.
Security: Safety is a priority, especially for girls’ accommodations. Look for properties with CCTV surveillance, security guards, and restricted entry.
Study Area: A quiet, dedicated study area can enhance focus, making it an ideal feature for students.
Laundry and Cleaning Services: Many rooms for rent include weekly cleaning and laundry services, adding convenience to students’ lives.
Tips for Finding the Right Room
Visit the Property: If possible, visit the property in person to ensure it meets your expectations. Online listings can be misleading, and it’s best to verify room conditions, neighborhood safety, and available amenities.
Check Proximity to Campus and Public Transport: Ensure the property is close to your college and has easy access to public transport if needed. This will make commuting hassle-free.
Compare Prices: Jaipur offers a variety of rental options, so compare prices based on amenities, proximity to campus, and room type. This will help you find a room within your budget.
Read Reviews: Many rental platforms offer reviews from previous tenants. Reading these can give insight into the property’s management, maintenance, and any issues you might encounter.
Final Thoughts
Renting a room near Jaipur colleges is an excellent choice for students who prioritize convenience, safety, and community. Whether you’re looking for a quiet single room, a vibrant shared space, or an amenity-rich PG, Jaipur has a variety of options tailored to student needs. By considering key factors such as location, amenities, and price, students can find the perfect room that fits both their lifestyle and academic requirements. Happystay.in
