Comics this week (especially Wonder Woman #10) ?
World’s Finest #28 - Been a great week for Jimmy Olsen between the last episode of MAWS and WF. More villains should blast Batman right as he’s about to unveil his prep time plan. Hope Supes and Mxy can put their heads together and beat this guy somehow, they’ve mostly been sitting on the sidelines.
GL: WJ #10 - Montos man, that spread of John in the thrall of Olgrun was worthy of Reis himself. Glad to see PKJ continuing his Aspects of Olgrun myth arc, now we see Olgrun’s Will. Will John end up playing host the same way Osul did to his Fire? I can’t wait to see how this ends.
Wonder Woman #10 - I appreciate King’s attempt to make the case that Diana is more complex than Supes and Bats when it comes to her relationship with Cheetah, but there is an obvious contrast: Diana is blessed by the gods while Cheetah is cursed! Still was a great issue, not sure if King or Sampere should get the credit for fight scenes but I’m leaning towards Sampere. Loved the Wonder Girls banter amongst themselves even if it was stiff at times.
Immortal Thor #12 - Ewing referencing the Empty Hand right as rumors are swirling that he’s jumping ship to DC? Could be a coincidence but I don’t think so.
Ultimate Spider-Man #6 - That final page was peak Spider-Man and MJ. All the people who thought Hickman was going to kill the family ASAP after suckering people in are seething right now, which is hilarious. Richard is still likely going to bite it, I can’t see Peter’s family getting out of this completely unscathed with all the ominous hints about the cost of being a hero. May gave him the costume, Ben pushed him to be Spidey, and MJ gave him the hero name. Richard has yet to contribute and is looking mighty vulnerable for the moment. But I’d love to be wrong and for this to be like Hickman’s F4 where even when one of the family “died”, a happy ending was still to be had at the end.

2022 comics reading log
In the early days of last year, I was inspired by some twitter mutuals to post my comics reading in the new year and kept it up from Jan 1 2022 till just about the bitter end. Something about it really helped keep me invigorated by the medium even in some pretty bleak times, so I’m going to keep it going this year, but here at Longboxd instead of on twitter, which I'm trying to spend less time at. Before I can do that though, I want to archive the 2022 entries in a spot that’s more permanent/less twitter-iffic, so here we go—pretty much every comic I read in 2022! (As transcribed from here)
Part 2: 22-38 (of 387)
(I can "only" post 30 images at a time here, so that’ll dictate the length of these catch-up posts)
22) Silver Star #1 by Jack Kirby & Mike Royer - Kirby’s Blubber? Very Beto vibes—very Lynchian, held together by spit and nonsense.
23) Shattered Earth #1 - The best story in this anthology has a horny dog that gets cucked by a wandering wasteland hippie.
24) Sun Runners #2
25) Shade, The Changing Man #50
26) True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys: NATIONAL ANTHEM - Narratively, it’s firmly in the "halcyon days of vertigo" mold, and that’s cool, but between Romero and Bellaire this is one of the more stunning art showcases I’ve seen in a while. God-tier coloring, IMO!
27) The Terminator #1 (1990) - Chris Warner tha gawd with nice chunky inks from Paul Guinan, and a script by DH genre MVP John Arcudi that swings between terse and pleasantly purple. This and the Predator series the year before (also drawn by Warner) set the mold for decades of movie tie-in books.
28 & 29) Blood n’ Guts #1 & 2 - These are very bad comics by a weird, probably bad dude who's weird & not always bad comics I grew up with. Not much to them (this is from one of Blair's big firehose-of-comics periods) other than a *great* logo I assume was made by Dave Cooper.
30) Alien Worlds #7 - I loved this series as a kid—it's mostly an art showcase (Corben, Morrow, Anderson & Perez in this issue!) but Bruce Jones' short stories are trashy scifi paperback anthology style fun, routinely see-sawing btwn kind of hokey & total bleak nihilism, often on the same page. one story, theoretically concerned w/recreating The Thing inside an implied sketch of a Wally Wood/EC planet setting, mostly actually focuses on infidelity leading to murder (a common Jones trope). In the end everyone dies after the revelation that their parkas are hungry aliens.
31) Eclipse Monthly #2 by various
32) Sensation Comics #6 - This is the pure, uncut shit.
33) Head Lopper #15
34) Marvel Team-Up #101 - Robot hippies and Peter Parker favorably compares the trauma of Nighthawk killing his girlfriend in a drunk driving incident to Uncle Ben’s death.
35) The Swamp Thing: Becoming TPB
36) Head Lopper #16
37) Skull, The Slayer #1 - Sorta standard Th’unda etc white adventure guy thrown into a prehistoric setting to fight dinosaurs kinda thing, (the twist being that this guy? He’s a real piece of shit!) but Steve Gan does impressive work, and Marv Wolfman’s colors are surprisingly effective.
38) The Man-Thing #8 - I haven’t read many of these. Pacing is slow if not deliberate, vampy gothic vibes. With Ploog’s squishy art, it kinda reads like a Golden Age Underground.

To be continued! Read Part 1 here

2 (A song you like with a number in the title), 20 (A song that has many meanings to you), 24 (A song by a band you wish were still together), 28 (A song by an artist with a voice that you love)
2: A song you like with a number in the title
One that's coming to mind for me is "5D (Fifth Dimension)" by The Byrds. I haven't listened to a whole lotta songs from this band yet, but this one was a favorite of mine a while back that I rediscovered recently. Something about these kinds of soft, psychedelic 60's songs never fail to make me joyful and free :)
20: A song that has many meanings to you
There's this one Alan Parsons Project song that I love called "The Eagle Will Rise Again" that I've given different meanings for with each re-listen
At first I took the lyrics solely in the context of the album's story; as a plea to the Egyptian Gods themselves to help steer the protagonist of the album in the right direction, as I assumed the storyline revolved around a man exploring the ruins of Ancient Egypt to find an answer to... something
After learning that many of the album's songs were criticizing/satirizing this fad from the 70's known as "pyramid power" (a belief that being inside of or placing an object inside of an Egyptian pyramid will grant powers to those people/objects), my main interpretation stayed but I then saw the protag as more desperate than curious. Thus the plea now felt like it came from someone who was giving up everything in an attempt to gain some sort of impossible mystical power to fix all their problems
And finally, in a vastly different interpretation from the ones I listed above, I've found an entirely new meaning to the lyrics of this song when they suddenly began to remind me of Lord Morpheus from The Sandman graphic novels. I'd go into detail as to why, but that would be MAJOR spoilers for the end of the comic
24: A song by a band you wish were still together
"Synchronicity II" and "King of Pain" by The Police. They're one of my favorite bands, and Synchronicity is one of my favorite albums (with these two being my favorite songs on said album as I love them both equally). I would have LOVED to have heard these preformed live by all three of them together, so it's a shame they had to break up such a long time ago T_T
28: A song by an artist with a voice that you love
You know what? I'm gonna give this one to Peter Hammell's utterly mesmerizing singing in "The Undercover Man" by Van Der Graaf Generator. Just the way he starts it off so soft with these little sharp ends, only to slowly build it up into this beautifully deranged crescendo by the end! It's just so... so... belissima! 👌🖤
#asks#music#for real listen to that van der graaf generator song#it's sooooo good one of my all time favs <3

Devil
The Hatred
best movies i watched in 2022:
The Thing
Eraserhead
Audition
The Batman
Mad God
Mandy
28 Days Later
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Nope
guilty pleasure movies:
Willy's Wonderland
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
some honorable mentions:
Hook - i'm not the biggest Peter Pan fan, so the magic of this movie was lost on me. i wasn't expecting child death, though.
Sinister & Happy Death Day - very surprised by how much i enjoyed them
Saw IV - Spiral: From the Book of Saw - the series is essentially a melodrama at this point
Army of Darkness & Drag me to Hell - Raimi films that disappointed me
Priest & Legion - movies with weird religious tones starring Paul Bettany that would have been better if they were comic books
F for Fake - i recommend watching this if you're a fan of video essays; wikipedia considers it the grandfather of video essays
Scanners, Johnny Guitar & Planet of the Apes - films that left me feeling some kind of way and i'm not sure if that's good or bad.
Melancholia & Anti-Christ - extraordinar...ily overhyped. why do people go nuts over these films? they're so mediocre.
Color Out of Space and Annihilation - films that left me feeling a kind of way 2!
House of 1000 Corpses - not nearly as fucked up as people made me think it would be
Big Trouble in Little China & Escape from New York - i was expecting more plot with less action in Big Trouble and more action with less plot in Escape and boy was i bamboozled.
i also realized i watched a lot of nic cage films this year: willy's wonderland, con air, knowing, mandy, color out of space, and ghost rider. i also watched three john carpenter films that starred kurt russell: the thing, big trouble in little china, and escape from new york.
accepting suggestions for next year :)

DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR SEPTEMBER 9, 2023
Ordinary People
By Ken Claar (Idaho, USA)
READ MARK 4:35-41
"To all who received [the Word], who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God."
JOHN 1:12 (NRSVUE)
"I wasn’t raised in a Christian home, so I first learned about the Bible through Christian comics. David and Goliath, Noah and the ark, Jonah and the fish — these men were all superheroes to me. Later, as a young adult in the military service, I started attending chapel where I heard some strange new things that changed my perspective: David sinned, Noah got drunk, Jonah defied God’s call. I have come to believe that the Bible is a true story of God’s power and love manifested through ordinary people.
I can relate to the stories of so many of the ordinary people in the Bible. I have been on a ship at sea during a typhoon, so I can identify with the fright of the fishermen in today’s scripture who thought their boat was sinking while Jesus slept. I can relate to Peter who sometimes spoke without thinking. (See Matt. 16:21-28 and 26:31-35, 69-75.) And I can relate to the people who were unable to believe the good news when Mary Magdalene told them Jesus was alive (Mk. 16:10-11).
The Bible is filled with ordinary people who were empowered by God to believe and to live new lives. Even Jesus came into our world as an ordinary man. We don’t have to be superheroes to be part of God’s family. We need only to believe and to follow the path God has set for us." Everyone can be part of God's family. Ordinary people find God and feel His empowering Spirit to guide them along life's journey. Go to Him and be directed along the path of your life.
TODAY'S PRAYER
"Dear God, help us always to remember that all the superheroes in the Bible are ordinary people chosen by you. Choose us this day." Amen.
Mark 4:35-41
"'35 Later that day, when evening came, Jesus said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” 36 They left the crowd and took him in the boat just as he was. Other boats followed along. 37 Gale-force winds arose, and waves crashed against the boat so that the boat was swamped. 38 But Jesus was in the rear of the boat, sleeping on a pillow. They woke him up and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re drowning?” 39 He got up and gave orders to the wind, and he said to the lake, “Silence! Be still!” The wind settled down and there was a great calm. 40 Jesus asked them, “Why are you frightened? Don’t you have faith yet?” 41 Overcome with awe, they said to each other, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”' Just have faith in God, even during the biggest storms that have come your way. He is big enough to stabilize you and set you on a level path. Your trust and faith in Him is of utmost importance. Be a blessing and help others to be directed to Him as well. Joe

“It is presented in ultimate universe #1 as something that thor, reed (who here is doom, to show how much the maker's changes have affected) and tony all felt before they knew it. So part of the premise is that they have that underlying feeling. But if we have to specificy with peter, in invasion he has the bit about maybe it being his turn, before it doesnt happen. That and playing on the whole "showing them all" part of af15 i guess”
If the figures in this universe has some kind of supernatural sensory ability for who they should be then that should have been better conveyed in this issue because every issue is someone’s first.
“Does it? The premise is peter becoming spidey when he's 35 and the tagline in the YT trailer (with almost 700k views) is quite literally "a spider-man saga unlike any other".”
It might be a Spidey Saga unlike any other but the reason for that is it isn’t a very good premise in the first place. That is why no one has done this before. It’d be potentially interesting if this was a believable extrapolation of the Peter we are familiar with who didn’t get his powers and becomes Spider-Man at age 35. But if it is a version of Peter who is becoming Spider-Man at 35 and is different in some ways and similar in others in an entirely arbitrary manner because this universe is just generally different, then I do not see the point. The entire interest in the premise would naturally stem from exploring how changing specific variables would impact the character we know. Otherwise, this is just a fanfic.
“Meanwhile the original USM's idea wsa "spider-man but in the 2000s from the ground up" geared for adaptations to use it as a source material.”
Not exactly. Marvel did opt to use USm for adaptations, but that wasn’t THE point of it at all. A MASSIVE rationale behind USM (and Marvel never openly admitted this) was to REPLACE 616 Spider-Man because the sales for ASM were catastrophic at the time. They threw around the idea of cosmically altering reality so Peter was in high school again but then opted for USM. The mentality was USM is what Spider-Man was originally intended to be and shold have always been instead of the old divorced guy he was at the time (im paraphrasing but Bendis in a 2004 interview said something like that).
Obviously, it was set in the modern day yes, but it whilst that was the advertised premise, whilst that is what fans claim the series did, on closer examination the original USM NEVER did that. Many characters had their roles, dynamics and personalities changed in various ways big and small for that to be the case. Bendis’ self-insert OC Kong McFarlane was a more relvant supporting character than Flash who, if memory serves, not only wasn’t in the series as much as he was in like Ditko’s era (relatively, obviously Ditko was like 28 issues in high school) but also had no redeeming qualities to him. He was even racist IIRC. Then you have MJ not having MJ’s backstory or personality, same with Gwen. Richard Parker being this MASSIVELY important character in Peter’s life, to the point where ‘Great Power = Great Responsibility’ was something he originally said and Uncle Ben just passed that along. Aunt May never had any major health issues requiring Peter to be the breadwinner for the family. Venom being Peter’s childhood friend whilst Harry was hardly in the series. And God…Hulk Goblin…
I’ve always said Spectacular Spider-man the cartoon is what the USM comic book SHOULD have been and it is much closer to Spider-Man from the ground up in the modern day than USM ever was. And noticeably, it was first and foremost rooted in Lee/Ditko/Romita.
“And hoenstly i would argue the first four arcs of Bendis’s USM were pretty good, he only started to drop the ball later.”
I’m sorry but I do not agree with that at all.
I admit I do not recall the first 4 arcs, but the first 3 were the origin/Green Goblin, Kingpin and Doc Ock.
Now, Kingpin I wouldn’t disagree about. the origin for the most part was actually quite good (which was co-written by Bill Jemas) but again…Hulk Goblin is trash. The Doc Ock arc was ridiculously slow, change Otto’s personality too much and reduced Kraven to a Steve Irwin joke.
“And honestly comparing it with the first issue of bendis’s USM it does just as much to set its characters, argubaly more so by giving both JJ, Ben and harry actual motivations going foward.”
But the difference is that Bendis’s USM #1 started with a Peter who was a kid, who was relatively recognisable to the 616 Peter pre-powers albeit in the modern day. This Peter is having me ask who is he and how did he wind up this way given that I know, and the reader is clearly EXPECTED to know, the standard version. Why is he working at the Bugle? How did he and MJ fall in love? What was his upbringing like given that his parents raised him until he was 15? How did they die? How did that affect him? And all of this is before we get to the actual premise of becoming Spider-Man at 35. I can’t care about Peter becoming Spider-Man at age 35 if I don’t know WHO Peter is because I don’t know much about him or the life he has lived. And choosing to give yourself powers and become a hero and endanger your family at that age is a REALLY irresponsible decision that needs to be better justified than it was. Hearing the premise from a friend I figured the logical story would have been to explore his life as he wrestled with the decision, either culminating in justifying him making the choice to himself powers, or else Peter is put in a situation where functionally he’d have no choice. E.g. he needs the power to save his family or something.
This was just ‘I feel something is missing and I am on autopilot. So now I will become a superhero vigilante.’ Like…isn’t that a HUGE decision that is going to affect your family in a massive way? The conversation he had with MJ was an utter joke because it was both short, not actually addressing the proper concerns parents and partners should be talking about and, if MJ knew what the conversation was really about (I couldn’t tell myself), then I’m asking why the Hell is SHE okay with endangering her family like that? It’s VERY different to her meeting and marrying and having kids with a Peter Parker who is ALREADY Spider-Man.
“I mean, its part of the setup that they’re a couple. Tho honestly…i think them getting togheter is one of the easiest parts to buy. MJ already thought peter was cute pre-bite in parell lives, and she only blew off their introductory dates becuase she knew he was spidey, and without that and presumably peter never being in a relationship with gwen they’d probably just jump at it sooner, even if with time and all. And i mean originally what we saw was the journey of them falling in love, but this is a story that starts with them already in love, using the fact that they’re the defacto couple in nearly every iteration to start them in a different point in life.”
I’m sorry, but I don’t buy that. MJ might’ve thought Peter was cute, but being Spider-Man helped him look more physically attractive and, more importantly, what about his PERSONALITY?
His personality isn’t going to be the same if he isn’t Spider-Man. Being Spider-Man is PART of why she fell in love with him. His sense of responsibility was forged massively through BEING Spider-Man. Hell, if he isn’t stressed the fuck out supporting his family and being a superhero, how much is HE going to be attracted to her carefree side? That’s not even getting into how different his personality would be if he wasn’t raised by ben and May and lost his parents at age 15.
In no way is it a done deal that these two would definitely hook up regardless. Is Peter seeing past her party girl façade? Is he bothering to put the work in to get passed that when it took Gwen dying to push MJ into lowering her defences even a little bit? Peter straight up said MJ was hard for him to figure out which is partially what drew him to Gwen (IIRC) so, wouldn’t it go that same way in this universe?
Like, Peter being Spider-Man was PART of MJ resolving her massive commitment issues and therefore choosing to marry Peter. So how does that happen in this universe? The simplest, laziest way to do so is that it’s a sideeffect of everything else being different.
You are right that part of the premise is them AS a couple, but that’s lame considering the selling point of this book is reliant upon pre-familiarity with Spider-Man. This book is a nothing burger if you pretend its about some brand new character.
“I mean there was a whole 5 issue prelude to more or less explain why things are different as the main hook for all 4 upcoming books. And this, much like the original ultimate, or earth one, or the new 52’s earth two or noir, or gaslight or 1602 is a pure AU. Its not a what if, or a bool sold around the idea that its a spin off from 616 ala spider-girl. If anything the main hook here is that this setting is a reversal of the original ultimate. Also related honestly peter’s parents being alive makes sense as a result of the stuff maker does to begin with, since there’s no US, there’s no SHIELD, so they wouldnt go on a plane and die when he’s a baby.”
If there was a prelude that explained everything, that infor should have been in this book as well. Every issue is someone’s first.
I don’t think those comparisons are appropriate. 1602, gaslight, noir take the stuff we are familiar with and overlay a particular theme. They reimagine the characters through the lens of those themes, which are period pieces
I can’t speak to Earth One or Two as I’ve not read them.
New 52 however is not a pure AU, it was a reboot and was thus obliged to respect the core characterisations and premises of the characters, which in most respects it didn’t hence people hated it.
I’ve already spoken about Ultimate. It was supposed to be essentially an adaptation of the original stuff in the modern day but it failed at being that.
If this new Ultimate Universe is just an AU where stuff is randomly different because it is then…there is honestly no point to it. It’s not a modern adaptation. It isn’t a period piece reimagining. Its just Hickman’s fanfiction in the same way the old USM was Bendis’ fanfiction.
I do not see how this is a reversal of the original ultimate, just because Peter is 35 that’s not a reversal. And I don’t think an ironic reversal is worth the time and money and energy this book is asking of the audience.
If you say his parents being alive makes sense, okay. But then HOW did they die? How did that affect him? How did they raise him vs ben and May? What was even their jobs? Were they still secret agents?
“Its more so that it is played with, in that context its someone using it ironically, since its about preventing a hero from being made by chance. Especially as its someone that would be aware of it once being a college of his peter. The traditional responsability speech is basically giving by ben with the whole bit about inaction coming from the man whose been his parental figure for 20 years here. It amounts to the same message just expressed differently, like the one scene from tasm but a bit better written.”
That is a false equivalency. Ben’s speech is NOT the same as the great power speech at all because peter doesn’t HAVE powers in the first place. He has the option of GIVING himself powers. Morever, I’d argue it wasn’t even the context alone which makes the speech problematic. Ben simply isn’t conveying the same message in the first place. He said stop waiting for something to happen and make it happen yourself. It was about being dynamic and a go-getter. The moral message of AF#15 wasn’t that Peter was waiting for the burglar to be caught so he didn’t do anything. It was that he COULD have done something himself but he was being selfish and misuing the power he had been given.
In this story Peter is being IRRESPONSIBLE in giving himself powers when that’d come at a HUGE potential cost for his family. It’d be different if there was a villain on the loose who, from Peter’s POV, can’t be stopped unless he steps up as Spider-Man, but IIRC that wasn’t the context.
I read Ultimate Spider-Man #1 by Hickman
So I checked this out in isolation of the whole event or events leading up to it.
I'm trying to decide if this is a case of false advertising or if it is actually as disappointing as it seemed.
This series was marketed on the grounds of 'come check out a married Spider-Man with kids'. But that was by no means the focus of the story. The focus was upon a) Uncle Ben's grieving Aunt May and b) peter's choice about whether to be Spider-Man or not.
Let me steelman and say, hey, the marketing was exploitative but that isn’t Hickman’s fault.
Honestly, this premise is still rather broken.
Let’s say, for the sake of argument, this universe is identical to 616 except the Maker has strategically meddled with it to avert the existence of superheroes.
Okay…so he made sure Peter’s parents died when he was 15 instead of like a toddler. And also that he wasn’t bitten by the spider. And also that there was no burglar. Couldn’t he have just gotten rid of the spider? Why all the extra stuff? And if he didn’t do anything other than get rid of the spider…why are all those other things different?
Speaking of which how/when/why does Jameson know the Parker family at all? Uncle Ben was a factory worker, he had NOTHING to do with the newspaper business and why would a working class guy like him know a millionaire/billionaire like Jameson? Why would he ever go into that business? Why would the Maker change that at all? If he didn’t change that how could ANY of the changed he made in the timeline ever have resulted in that?
Similarly, why is PETER working for the Bugle? Peter’s interest in photography was specifically in relation to his career as Spider-Man. Yes, he developed something of an interest in it later in life in his 20s, but that was a fleeting thing after he left college. It was never really his long term career goal. Sure, you could say he is working on the science section of the Bugle. But…why? Why wouldn’t he just, you know….go into a scientific field in general? What does the Maker gain from changing that if he was responsible for changing that at all?*
And this, in fact, is a microcosm of how the premise of this story is borked. In a world where Peter Parker
Is an adult
Was not really raised by Uncle Ben and Aunt May because his parents died when he was 15
Never experienced the death of Uncle Ben or Aunt May in his teens
Was never a superhero
HOW exactly is he the character we know and love? The fun of a What If or AU is contrasting the new version to the character we are familiar with. But by rights he should be MASSIVELY different as a person. He wasn’t raised by people who were almost a generation older than his parents. He didn’t have to bear the burden of being a provider or caregiver for his household as a teenager. He never had to cope with the guilt of Uncle Ben’s death. And would he even know the Great Power/Great Responsibility thing considering it was a combination of being RAISED by his aunt and uncle along with Ben’s death that drilled that into him? In this universe neither of those things are factors so if he DOES live by that life lesson how and why would he?
As an extension of that, how and why did he wind up with Mary Jane considering his upbringing combined with his life as Spider-Man were important factors in them falling in love. Mary Jane was attracted to his sense of responsibility, but that sense of responsibility came about due to his upbringing and that upbringing has changed. Not to mention, given her abusive father, knowing Peter was a man who had incredible power (like her father had over her) but used it responsibility was a HUGE aspect of her attraction to him, plus she got turned on by the danger to some extent.
So…how did they hook up? Unless the Maker for some fucking reason decided to make sure MJ’s Dad was a successful author and never touched the booze. But WHY would he do that????????????
And then you have the big one which is…Peter can magically sense he is in fact supposed to be Spider-Man….um…Okay, so, yes, Peter does have a certain belief in destiny because he talked about it maybe being his destiny to be Spider-Man when he was a teenager and even older. But…that was a belief. He questioned it. He never SENSED that about himself. You could argue being Spider-Man is from his POV something he doesn’t have a choice about, but that’s like saying a parent doesn’t have a choice to look after their kids. They do. It’ just that you do not have a choice about it if you feel compelled to be a good person. It was never a magical bullshit thing.
Hickman in this regard and in his general portrayal of Peter is almost making this weird ass nature over nurture argument. That Peter wouldn’t been broadly the same kind of guy we always knew him to be albeit he could commit to a 9/5, a family and be less tightly strung because he doesn’t have the stress of heroism or guilt shit. And I guess he has less of a sense of humour? (Although so does Uncle ben, though he is grieving…although Jonah is a lot more touchey feeley than he should be as well sooooooo….)
But that’s just…lame.
It’s making a mockery of Peter Parker’s struggles in the 616 and most traditional portrayals. His experiences are integral in forming him into who he is as a person. Hickman is arguing that Richard and Mary’s DNA was actually the most important thing in shaping his personality. Unless are we really saying Richard and Mary would’ve been broadly the same kind of parents May and Ben were? They were goddam CIA agents!?
And on top of that…the story is making this BROKEN argument for Peter being a superhero. He feels like he is drifting through life. He feels unfulfilled. Like something is missing. Uh huh…um…what about your kids bro?
If you become a superhero aren’t you going to be potentially exposing your family to danger? Don’t you risk your kids growing up without a father because you get killed, crippled or are generally occupied a lot by being a hero.
Now, to be clear, that situation is A LOT different to 616 Peter who already had great power before meeting MJ. He also started his career at age 15 vs this Peter who’s literally going to learn how to web-swing and fight at age 35! Shit, most people whobecome soldiers, fire fighters or police officers don’t START their careers (with 0 training btw) at age 35! And there is a massive support network for those roles too.
I’m not saying Peter can’t be a superhero and a family man, but I am saying it is morally wrong for him to CHOOSE to turn himself into a superhero when he already is a family man. This is like saying it is okay for a man in his midlife crisis to blow a chunk of the family savings on a sports car or get himself a 20 year old mistress because it will make him a more engaged husband and father.
Basically, this first issue represents a lose-lose scenario from where I am standing. We don’t know much about how this Peter is different. The ways in which he is don’t make sense. The ways in which he is similar don’t make sense. These questions need to be answered BEFORE we get to the premise of the story (Peter choosing to be Spider-Man at age 35 when he is a family man). And the premise itself is unbelievable unless we want to buy into Peter being a selfish asshole, which therefore makes him unlikable in general and very much NOT like the Spidey we know and love.
Basically, this series might as well NOT be about Peter Parker in the first place, but some other guy living through a mid-life crisis by becoming a superhero.
*Are you noticing how I kee coming back to the Maker as a explanation for these changes? I don’t even know if the stuff leading into this spelt out what he was and wasn’t involved with, but that is a big question that should be addressed. Unfortunately it is the ONLY way to explain these changes beyond ‘its just different because it is’. And either way it is lazy and lame as shit.

Hi, I'm curious about your take on whether or not Christians should be Zionists. I thought the bible supported this. Can you help me?
Hi!
I'm going to categorical here :
anyone with a proper grasp of the what New Testament, the New Covenant, and what the Church (capital C) of Christ stands for, cannot support Zionism.
I know supporting Israel is some sort of default in modern church to be pro Israel but most churches these days are demon filled bewildering the flock. That's why I think God made a big favor to Christians through the quarantine, closing down churches (little c) and pushing Christians to seek Him in the secret of their room and not blindly believing the lies of wolves in sheep's clothing shoving their down to hell with their doctrines of demon.
As CHRISTIANS, we are not entitled to one specific land or nation, and have no specific race (Galatians 3:28). The promises of God Zionists are hellbent on to justify kicking out Arabs are those of the Old Testament. But Christ happened. He told us to go out in the World and Save the nations - not conquering a place to build another kingdom of Israel.
I'd like to remind you that Jews do not acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah and have a pathological HATRED for Jesus, so I'm always baffled to see Christians uncritically defending a nation dedicated to deny the core of their faith.
Jews are literally oppressing CHRISTIANS in Israel:
youtube
Interesting how Christians will be harsher on Muslims, when Muslim hold Jesus (and Mary) and on a much higher respect than Judaism ever will....(I think a lot of this has to do with racism and cultural essentialism...)
I made a bunch of articles/post on my Christian apologetics side blog (I have a tag dedicated to anti zionism) so I'll list them down below.
Debunking the "We Stand with Israel" mantra WITH THE BIBLE
Debunking the "We Stand with Israel" on an Old Testament VS New Testament perspective
"The Synagogue of satan" (Revelations 2:9)
A documentary with Jews scholars expressing their outlook on Christianity and Judaism (you'll hear straight from the horse's mouth that the Talmud says that Jesus is boiling is excrement, was a magician, and that Mary was a harlot.... but yeah Christianism is totally compatible with Judaism...🤡)
also here's a post a reply I wrote to someone who mad at this doc and said it was aNtiSemiTe
Just today I saw that documentary about Jewish settlers and while I appreciate how balanced it was, it was quite unnerving to see the overall fanatic of these settlers thinking they are entitled to these land based on their holy book and arguing the Jews race is protected from God...when the same God is actually the one who kicked their ancestors out because how unfaithful and rebellious they were - a rebellion modern religious Jews are still uplifting are today. There's a reason why Jewish people suffered so much throughout History and have been an everlasting exiled nation.....it was all a sanction from God because of their betrayal. So it's kinda tragi-comical whener Jews are bragging about being the "chosen people"...chosen people to suffer? SMH
vimeo
The state of Israel is NOT a miracle. Without the American taxpayer money, it wouldn't exist. It's a mirage entertained by delusional fanatical, thinking soldiers bombing children and expropriating families is the will of God and godly protection.
Those people need to repent and acknowledge the Messiah already came, and will come again to judge the world. Some Jews will, and they're the 144,000 the Bible (Revelations 7) talks about - but beside any of this, modern day fraudulent Israel will disappear, and be replaced by the TRUE heavenly kingdom of God: the New Jerusalem, that Jesus HIMSELF (and not American or IDF soldiers) at his 2nd coming will build up for those who had accepted Him and their lord and savior (so not Jews).

Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Bruce Banner (the Hulk), is the small and somewhat shy daughter of Los Angeles County Sheriff William Morris Walters and Elaine (née Banner) Walters (who died in a car crash when Jennifer was 17).[20] Operatives of Nicholas Trask, a crime boss who had crossed paths with her father, shot and seriously wounded her on the day that Banner visited her to tell her about his transformation into the Hulk. Since no other donors with her blood type were available, Banner provided his own blood for a transfusion; as they already shared the same blood type and DNA, his gamma-irradiated blood, combined with her anger, transformed Jennifer into the green-skinned She-Hulk when the mobsters tried to finish her off at the hospital.[21] She then used her new powers to take down Trask, who was killed when the earth-boring device he rode malfunctioned, taking him to the center of the Earth.[22]
As She-Hulk, Jennifer possessed powers similar to those of her cousin, though at a reduced level. She also possessed a less monstrous, more Amazonian appearance. Initially, the transformation to her She-Hulk form was triggered (as with Bruce Banner's) by anger. Like her cousin Bruce, his counterpart, the Leader, Doc Samson and most other persons mutated by exposure to gamma radiation over the years, her mutated form was originally explained as being molded by her subconscious desire to look like the ideal woman. She eventually gains control of her transformations when Michael Morbius cures her of a lethal blood disease. As a criminal defense lawyer, she defended Morbius in his trial for his vampiric killings.[23]
Eventually, Jennifer decides that she is going to retain her She-Hulk form permanently—preferring the freedom, confidence, and assertiveness that it gave her compared to her more timorous and fragile "normal" form. After her brief solo career, she joined the Avengers.[24] This led to her being transported to Battleworld by the Beyonder and her participation in the Secret Wars,[25] most notable for sparking her long-standing rivalry with the newly empowered Titania.[26] After the heroes returned to Earth, she temporarily replaced the Thing (who, having been repeatedly de-powered during the event, opted to stay in Battleworld for some time as a form of soul-searching) as a member of the Fantastic Four.[27]
During her tenure with the Fantastic Four, She-Hulk met and started a romance with Wyatt Wingfoot.[28] One day, she had to prevent a radiation leak in a downed S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. This radiation exposure had a drastic effect on Jennifer: she could no longer transform back into her original human form.[29] However, this was an agreeable turn of events for her, since she preferred being She-Hulk, and it was revealed much later that the block was purely psychological.
Shortly after that, she appeared before the Supreme Court, where she battled Titania again.[30]
Sensational She-HulkEdit
After her Fantastic Four years, She-Hulk rejoined the Avengers for a while. She became hypnotized by the Ringmaster into becoming a performer in the Circus of Crime, and battled the Headmen.[31] With Spider-Man, she defeated the Headmen[32] and became an assistant District Attorney and began working for New York City district attorney Blake Tower. Here she met Louise "Weezie" Grant Mason, formerly the Golden Age superheroine the Blonde Phantom.[33] She had a long series of unusual encounters, including when she battled Doctor Bong,[34] first contended against Xemnu the Living Titan,[35] encountered "Nick St. Christopher",[36] and encountered "Spragg the Living Hill/Comet".[37]
Sensational She-Hulk #15 introduced a grey version of She-Hulk that appeared at night only and shared a lot in common with the Hulk, such as having a childlike mind, speaking in the third person and divorcing from her Jennifer Walters identity, referring to Jennifer as "puny Jennifer", She-Hulk returned to normal in the following issue, with her green coloration returning in Sensational She-Hulk #17.[38] She-Hulk later discovered that Louise Mason had manipulated Tower into hiring her, so that Mason might again star in a comic book (and thus avoid dying of old age). Later, while doing legal work for Heroes for Hire, She-Hulk spent some time dating Luke Cage.
After a time, She-Hulk returns to the Avengers. Repeated exposure to the presence of her teammate Jack of Hearts, who has the innate ability to absorb radiation that is around him, leads to She-Hulk being unable to control her changes, which resulted in her tearing the Vision in half. It is then revealed that all of the events were caused by the Scarlet Witch. Now, when she is afraid, she not only turns into She-Hulk but her mind becomes maddened by paranoia and rage. Jennifer flees, fearing that she will endanger her friends and others, leading to the "Search for She-Hulk" storyline.
The other Avengers track her to the town of Bone, Idaho, where Jennifer is lying low but the anxiety of being found prompts her to change, causing her to damage much of the town. Her cousin shows up but fails to reason with her; he "Hulks out" and the two fight—the devastation to the town subsequently being blamed on the Hulk.
Psychological limitations inhibit her transformation between her two forms. For a time, as detailed in "She-Hulk" #4 (March 2006), Jennifer works as a relief volunteer helping to repair Bone. She gains confidence after solving a murder mystery, reveals her green alter-ego to the entire town, and then uses her strength to make many more repairs. This, combined with Leonard Samson's new 'gamma-charger', gives her full control over her transformations for, as she said, 'the time being'.
JLA/AvengersEdit
In the DC/Marvel crossover JLA/Avengers, She-Hulk first appears being brainwashed by Starro when the Avengers battle her, grabbing a startled Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) by her leg, before the latter blasts her away with her powers.[39] She later assists the Avengers in the subsequent hunt for the 12 artifacts needed to trap the DC villain Krona, first battling Aquaman in Asgard, and later in the Savage Land with the rest of the heroes.[40] During the final battle against Krona and his forces, she assists Wonder Woman in her battle against Surtur, and eventually appears at the end as one of the heroes that started out the entire event.[41]
Single Green FemaleEdit
The events of The Search for She-Hulk, combined with her own lack of personal responsibility and the potential legal ramifications of her saving the world swaying juries leads Jennifer back to the legal profession in a more full-time capacity, when she was asked to practice law in the Superhuman Law division of the New York firm of Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway (GLK&H).[volume & issue needed] This offer is dependent upon Jennifer remaining human while she worked for the firm.
While practicing at GLK&H, Jennifer gradually becomes comfortable as both She-Hulk and Jennifer Walters, realizing that she has much to offer the world in both forms.[volume & issue needed] During one of these adventures, she realizes her strength as She-Hulk is dependent on her strength as Walters and works out in her human form. Thus, she exponentially increases her powers as She-Hulk.[42]
Civil WarEdit
She-Hulk registered under the Superhuman Registration Act, and is a supporter of Tony Stark (Iron Man). However, as an attorney, she advised individuals on both sides of the Civil War. She agreed to file suit against Peter Parker for fraud on behalf of her father-in-law, Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Her intention is to keep the suit tied up in the courts indefinitely. She is also the lawyer for Speedball in Civil War: Front Line.
In She-Hulk #14 (2006), Clay Quartermain of S.H.I.E.L.D. informs Jennifer that she has been drafted into the organization as a result of her registration. Her mission is to fight various foes of the Hulk while training heroes under the Initiative. She serves with the Hulkbusters: Clay Quartermain, Agent Crimson, Agent Cheesecake and Agent Beefcake.[43]
World War HulkEdit
Due to her involvement in S.H.I.E.L.D., She-Hulk derives a bit of information suggesting that the organization knows of her cousin's whereabouts. Anticipating a problem, Tony Stark has She-Hulk secretly injected with S.P.I.N. Tech that transforms her to human form. Enraged, she tells Stark that, although he may have taken She-Hulk out of the equation, he still has to face Jennifer Walters, one of the best lawyers in the country. Jennifer informs Stark that he's miscalculated: She-Hulk would have just pummeled him, but Jennifer Walters has the ability to destroy him.
On her way home, Jennifer runs into Amadeus Cho, a young genius out looking for friends of the Hulk. Cho, whom the Hulk once saved, discovered what the Illuminati had done to the Hulk, and he wants help in finding him. Cho temporarily restores Jennifer's powers so that she can take out Doc Samson, who came to apprehend Cho for Reed Richards and Tony Stark. Cho says he can permanently restore Jennifer's powers if she will join him, but she politely refuses, instead directing him to Hercules and Angel.
During the "World War Hulk" storyline, a re-powered She-Hulk assists in the evacuation of Manhattan.[44] She tries to reason with her cousin, who has just destroyed Stark Tower during his battle with Iron Man. The Hulk warns her to leave, but she stands her ground. After she lands a punch squarely to his face, the Hulk smashes her into the ground, creating a crater around her body. As he moves on to his next confrontation, all Jennifer can say is: "God help us all."[45]
Jennifer is held captive with the other defeated heroes at Madison Square Garden, which the Hulk has converted into a gladiatorial arena. The heroes have been implanted with the same obedience discs that compelled the Hulk and his allies to fight one another during their time on the planet Sakaar.
Jennifer returns to the law firm to work on suing Tony Stark for stealing her powers. She is subpoenaed to give a testimony in a case in which Mallory Book is trying to prove that the Leader's criminal acts are the result of a shift of personality induced by his mutation, and an addiction to his gamma irradiated powers, and that he thus cannot be held accountable for his actions. During her testimony, Jennifer realizes that she herself is "addicted" to being She-Hulk; Mallory forces her to admit that she has had a long list of sexual partners as She-Hulk. After the testimony, Pug appears and the two spend an evening together as friends, which cheers her up. She confronts Mallory the next day and tells her that she will put a stop to her Leader case.[46] However, it is revealed that the Leader has been acquitted of his crimes.[47]
There is an apparent inconsistency between the She-Hulk and World War Hulk comics: in She-Hulk #19, the Leader is on trial in New York City, which is being cleaned up after the Hulk's recent attack. The action in the issue takes place during or after the events of World War Hulk. However, Jennifer appears as She-Hulk in the first and second issues of World War Hulk, during which the Hulk is destroying New York City. The discrepancy is resolved in She-Hulk #20: Jennifer explains that Tony Stark temporarily disabled the nanobots to allow her to assist in the battle against her cousin, only to reactivate them when the battle was over. She amends her suit against Stark to demand the permanent deactivation of the nanobots.
Post-World War HulkEdit
At some point after World War Hulk, Jennifer was brought before the Living Tribunal[48] and asked to weigh her universe against a newer, better "cosmic trophy wife" version, described by Walters as "an ultimate universe." Her universe wins, and she resigns from the Magistrati.
After the Leader's trial, Artie Zix reveals himself as RT-Z9 and holds the main staff of GLK&H hostage while asking them questions at the behest of a group of aliens from a corner of the galaxy recently discovered by the Watcher Qyre. The aliens, called the Recluses, wish to keep their existence a secret. She-Hulk earlier decreed that Qyre not reveal knowledge of the Recluses' existence at the meetings of the Watchers.[49] This had serious repercussions: it is revealed at the close of She-Hulk #20 that an evil being has conquered that portion of the galaxy, and is preparing an assault on all of creation. Qyre, who holds knowledge of the plan, is unable to speak of it to anyone else. At She-Hulk's time trial, it was revealed that her actions made a destructive event called the Reckoning War possible. However, comments made by the future Southpaw, divulge that the war, though a terrible and dark time, will be favorably resolved.
A permanently de-powered Jennifer Walters finds that tourists from an alternate universe – designated the Alpha universe – are crossing into her universe – which they call Beta – to gain access to superpowers and comes face to face with her own powered-up doppelganger. Jennifer confirms that her Alpha counterpart slept with the Juggernaut but her anger quickly turns to sorrow as she realizes that without her abilities, the Alpha Jennifer Walters – while unfamiliar with superhuman law – is far better suited to life in the Beta universe. Realizing this, she decides that she will go to the Alpha universe and let the other Jennifer Walters take over for her.
As she steps through the portal, Reed Richards realizes he can use the previously stored configuration of the Alpha She-Hulk to restore Jennifer's powers by purging the nanites from her body and setting the teleporter to loop her back to this reality. Having regained her abilities, Jennifer remains in her home reality, while the Alpha Jen Walters returns to her own universe and reconciles with her boyfriend, the Alpha Augustus "Pug" Pugliese.
At an unspecified time after World War Hulk, She-Hulk assists Tony Stark with Emil Blonsky's murder investigation.[50] While in Stark's Helicarrier, she is attacked and beaten by the Red Hulk who states to her that he's not Bruce. She-Hulk vows to get even for the deliberate humiliation.[51] She later helps to prevent casualties in San Francisco after the Red Hulk caused an earthquake in the area,[52] and assembles Thundra and the Valkyrie together to capture him.[53]
Some months after regaining her abilities, Jennifer was tasked to defend an accused killer named Arthur Moore. While she was successful in defending him, immediately after his freedom was secured he claimed to be guilty and showed her images of the crimes he had been accused of. Jennifer's horror at what she was being shown, combined with Moore's gloating, was enough to push her rage so far that she became the savage She-Hulk once again. She attacked him and threatened to kill him if he was not given the death penalty. She also told everybody within earshot that he was guilty and backed up her accusation by revealing privileged information. This resulted in her being disbarred. Jennifer later found out that Moore really was innocent; the images he had shown her had been false. It was also revealed, albeit not to Jennifer, that Moore had hoped to get her to react exactly the way she did since his employers wanted She-Hulk disbarred for purposes as yet unknown. Unable to practice law any more, Jennifer began working for Freeman Bonds Inc. – a subsidiary of GLK&B – as a bounty hunter with her Skrull partner Jazinda.
She was later recruited by Stark as a member of an Initiative-sponsored incarnation of the Defenders for a short while until Tony Stark disbanded the team.[54][volume & issue needed] Afterwards, she continued to aid team leader Nighthawk for a brief time[volume & issue needed]until she was fully able to join the team on Nighthawk's request and that it would be away from the Initiative.[volume & issue needed]
Together they have several adventures, even encountering Hercules, but they soon ended up involved in the midst of the Secret Invasion.[55]
Secret InvasionEdit
During the Skrull takeover of Earth during Secret Invasion, She-Hulk and Jazinda hunt down a member of the Skrulls who functions as their religious leader. X-Factor initially impedes her progress, but they part ways on uncertain terms. She-Hulk and Jazinda capture the Skrull and the two heroines take the Skrull to New York, where they encounter the Super-Skrull, Kl'rt.[56] Kl'rt came to kill his daughter, Jazinda, going so far as to shoot her in the head. Due to her regenerative properties, Jazinda was still not fully dead. The Skrull religious leader wants to completely remove her regenerative ability, but Kl'rt stops him after She-Hulk pleads to his fatherly nature, tapping into his guilt for not being able to save his son who had died in a previous war.[volume & issue needed]
Lady LiberatorsEdit
Some time after the Skrull invasion is defeated, the country of Marinmer suffers a devastating earthquake. Because the victims of the earthquake are members of a minority religious group, the Marinmer government has confiscated all humanitarian aid packages, and because of Marinmer's strong ties to powerful countries such as Russia and China, other nations refuse to intervene for fear of sparking a war. She-Hulk and several members of the Lady Liberators secretly enter Marinmer, intending to steal the confiscated aid packages and distribute them to the earthquake victims.[57] The Winter Guard attempts to stop them, but gives up after seeing the plight of the earthquake victims.[58] Afterwards, the US government attempts to arrest She-Hulk for her actions in Marinmer, but drops the charges to avoid political embarrassment. With public opinion overwhelmingly in her favor, She-Hulk seems poised to get her legal license back when Jazinda is captured by the Behemoth after he mistakenly attacks her, thinking she is the real She-Hulk.[59] Jazinda is then taken to a government lab and brutally experimented on when her ability to resurrect herself from the dead is discovered. Jazinda contacts She-Hulk telepathically through a secretly implanted mind reading device and warns her that the government will be coming to question her about their relationship. Jazinda tells She-Hulk to say she did not know Jazinda was a Skrull and just before going dead/unconscious tells She-Hulk "I've always l...". She-Hulk tries to keep up the denial, but when she sees Jazinda about to be vivisected, she loses control and breaks Jazinda out. The Behemoth tries to stop her, but She-Hulk defeats him with the help of the Lady Liberators. Later it is revealed that Mallory Book, her former boss, was behind all the bad things happening to She-Hulk along with a group called the "Fourth Wall". Yet when she saw She-Hulk risk herself to save her Skrull friend, Book "cancelled" the plan.[60]
Dark ReignEdit
In the four-issue miniseries All-New Savage She-Hulk, Jennifer fights Lyra, the alternate reality daughter of Hulk and Thundra after she comes to the Earth-616 reality for the DNA of the strongest man.[61] While Jennifer and Lyra were fighting, Sentry tosses her away believing the man Lyra is referring to is him.[62] She-Hulk later returns, enraged, and pummels the Sentry into the ground. She then helps Lyra escape from Avengers Tower.[63]
M.I.A.Edit
In Incredible Hulk #600, Jennifer tasks Ben Urich to discover the identity of Red Hulk. She informs him that she is unable to as she has asked too many questions to the wrong people. She has Urich bring a photographer (Peter Parker), and meets him along with her insider, Doc Samson, and they venture into a S.H.I.E.L.D. base that is actually a front for A.I.M. and General Ross's Gamma Power Super Soldier Program. Leonard Samson then appears to have a breakdown, but in reality he is changing into Samson. Samson claims to be stronger and faster (and is larger in size, has longer hair and a lightning bolt scar) than Jennifer. The clashing duo are subdued by MODOK and the facility explodes in the aftermath of a fight between Red Hulk and Hulk; Jennifer, Samson (who has reverted to Leonard) and Red Hulk are caught in the explosion. Jennifer's status is unknown and Red Hulk does not reveal anything to Urich when the two meet a second time.[64]
While She-Hulk is M.I.A., the Red She-Hulk makes her first appearance where she claims Jennifer Walters to be dead.[65]
It was later shown in a flashback that Red She-Hulk prevented Jennifer Walters from escaping from A.I.M. custody. During this battle, Red She-Hulk brutally beat Jennifer and snapped her neck with a cable. In the last panel, Jennifer Walters appeared to be dead with the Red She-Hulk standing over her body,[66] though the Red She-Hulk claims she did not know her own strength. She then questions Doc Samson whether it was the real She-Hulk or a Life-Model Decoy, to which Samson answers "You're here to follow orders, not to ask questions".[67] Lyra later infiltrates the Intelligencia, where she finds Jennifer in stasis.[68] Following a brief fight with the Red She-Hulk, the three decide to team up to take down Intelligencia's forces.[69]
Incredible HulksEdit
Following the defeat of the Intelligencia, Jennifer begins traveling with her cousin Bruce, Skaar, Korg, Rick Jones and Betty Ross.[70] Shortly after the events of World War Hulks, Skaar becomes aware that his brother Hiro-Kala is approaching and that he intends to crash the planet K'ai into the Earth. She-Hulk is on the team as they manage to successfully avert disaster. Upon returning to Earth, they find the world in flames as it is in the grasp of the Chaos War. They journey to Hell, where they fight and defeat the Chaos King. Returning to a restored Earth, they are greeted as monsters.[volume & issue needed]
At some point before or after these events, Jennifer and Lyra settle in New York, where Lyra begins to attend high school in an attempt to gain an understanding of humanity as it occurs in this timeline. As well as helping to integrate Lyra into society, they are also involved in trying to round up the remaining members of the Intelligencia.[volume & issue needed]
They manage to round up the Intelligencia, but the Wizard is able to escape imprisonment and goes after Lyra at her high school prom, almost killing her before She-Hulk intervenes, knocking out Wizard but not before Lyra's secret identity has been compromised. The rest of the pupils turn on Lyra as a result of her prom date being injured and the endangerment of everyone at the dance. She-Hulk explains to her afterwards that they have to leave and that despite being heroes, the life of a Hulk is often lonely.[volume & issue needed]
Fearsome FourEdit
During the Fear Itself storyline, She-Hulk joins with Howard the Duck, Nighthawk and the Frankenstein Monster to form a four-person team called the Fearsome Four to stop the Man-Thing from its destructive path. They later discover a plot by Psycho-Man to use the Man-Thing's volatile empathy to create a weapon.[71]
Future FoundationEdit
Prior to a time- and multiverse-spanning trip by the Fantastic Four and family, the Thing asks She-Hulk to be a member of the Future Foundation.[72]
Doc GreenEdit
When the Hulk is elevated into "Doc Green" – a version of the Hulk possessing Bruce Banner's intellect – after he is treated for a shot to the head as Bruce Banner by use of the Extremis virus, he sets out to attack and cure other gamma-based mutations. Steve Rogers attempts to order the Hulk to stop before he goes after She-Hulk,[73] but when Doc Green finally confronts her, he instead admits that he has come to recognize that he is coming dangerously close to the Maestro, as part of him enjoyed eliminating his 'rivals', having decided instead to accept the eventual loss of his intellect as Extremis wore off rather than risk that persona emerging. Informing She-Hulk that she is the only gamma mutation whose life he felt had been legitimately enhanced by her condition, Doc Green provides her with the last injection of his cure, asking her to use it on him if he goes too far in his efforts to stop an A.I. version of himself that he created and unleashed.[74]
GwenpoolEdit
In Gwenpool's first Christmas special, Howard the Duck invited her to She-Hulk's Christmas party on the provision that she has not killed any good guys recently. She shows up and karaokes with Ms. Marvel. Also there was a one-shot image of her holding mistletoe over her head and inviting She-hulk to kiss her while Ms. Marvel looked on in girlish glee. There were dozens of superhumans in attendance, proving that whether she is acting as a hero or not, She-hulk keeps strong ties to the super-community.[volume & issue needed]
Civil War IIEdit
During the 2016 Civil War II storyline, after the Inhuman Ulysses predicts Thanos' arrival on Earth, She-Hulk was mortally wounded by a direct attack from the villain in question.[75][76] When Iron Man learns that they used Ulysses' precognitive power to ambush Thanos, he vows to make sure that no one uses it again. Before She-Hulk goes into cardiac arrest, she tells Captain Marvel to fight for the future.[77] After Hawkeye was acquitted for shooting Bruce Banner, Captain Marvel visited She-Hulk, who came out of her coma. When She-Hulk angrily demanded to know the verdict of Hawkeye's trial, Captain Marvel remained silent.[78]
Post-Civil War IIEdit
Following Bruce Banner's funeral, Jennifer Walters left the superhero business and continued to work as a lawyer, where she gained her first client: Maise Brewn, who was an Inhuman descendant. Due to the stress following the fight with Thanos, Jennifer started turning uncontrollably into her version of the Grey Hulk at different intervals. Jennifer helped Maise when she was recovering from the trauma and being evicted by her landlord Mr. Tick. When Maise got impatient with Jennifer and summoned a Fear Golem that killed Mr. Tick and some police officers, Jennifer is nearly killed by it and transforms into the Hulk. She defeated the Fear Golem and prevented Maise from committing suicide when Maise was arrested for reckless endangerment afterwards.[79]
Afterwards, Jennifer transformed into the Hulk and met the Hellcat. After changing back, Jennifer told the Hellcat that she was worried over the fact that her grey color could mean that she is like Bruce (since Bruce also had a grey incarnation). Later, Jennifer was watching a live video on the internet when a baker named Oliver turned into a Hulk-like creature on-camera.[80] Jennifer spent several days trying to track him down, eventually confronting him as the Hulk at the Brooklyn Bridge. During the following battle, she lost control of her Hulk persona, almost killing him, though the Hellcat managed to calm her down. However, the incident left Jennifer worried about losing control again.[81]
Some time later, the Leader kidnapped Jennifer and forced her to transform into the Hulk in order to force her to kill his new assistant, Robyn, who willingly went through a blood transfusion in order to become a Hulk-like monster herself. The Hulk nearly killed Robyn, but Jennifer managed to regain control, before defeating the Leader by electrocuting him. Jen then went with self-help writer Florida Mayer, who used a special pill to transport Jennifer to her subconscious, leading her to confront her Hulk persona and illusions of Thanos and Banner, finally overcoming her trauma in the process. Upon waking, Jennifer reverted to her She-Hulk persona.[82]
During the war against the Cotati, She-Hulk is revealed to have been killed and replaced by a Cotati, attacking the Avengers when they tried to negotiate a truce with their new enemy, the heroes only surviving the attack thanks to the Invisible Woman's forcefield, although the Cotati/She-Hulk then beats down the Thing and retreats.[83] Invisible Woman, Mantis, and Thing are locked in combat with the Cotati-possessed She-Hulk. Back in New York, Jo-Venn and N'kalla release their positive memories which revives She-Hulk enough to break the Cotati off of her and to stop the fighting between the Kree and the Skrull. When the Cotati are defeated, She-Hulk and Thor take Sequoia away.[84] It turns out that She-Hulk was able to return to life thanks to Leader who has mastered the way to control the Green Door.[85

In another universe, Dr. Chris Carnovo is older, wiser, and a professor of Renaissance history at the local university. He’s also the maestro of the local historical fencing club. One of his colleagues, Audrey King, has a teenage son named Luke whom Chris has decided to teach the art of 17th century Italian rapier. Luke just so happens to be the cousin of Leo King, the boxing Lion character I created. So yeah—my characters all know each other and are related to each other.
Here, Chris demonstrate to Luke the geometric principles of the inquartata. Luke is now a little more motivated to trust Chris’s instructions.

Peter the Marshal, Lord of the Isles, depicted normally and personified (fursonified?) as his heraldic animal—the Islandic lion. In the background is his ancestral castle of Aesirert. He carries Dragonsbane, the dragonsteel greatsword of his ancestor, Peter Dragonsbane.
The Isles are home to a still-healthy population of Islandic lions. They are among the top predators on the Isles, rivaled only by dragons. But while dragons are considered the most powerful animal of Heimar, the lion is considered the most noble. Islanders respect the lions’ living in prides, believing that it mirrors their own strong commitment to family and clan, and they are not generally considered the threat to humans that dragons are. It is also the heraldic symbol of the Prince of the Gods, ever since the days of Peter Dragonsbane, who appeared as a stranger wearing a badge with a golden lion.
The lion was also the heraldic badge of Peter’s father, Claas Perseyn, the previous Lord of the Isles. When Tiberian I united the free Kingdom of Heimar with the slave-holding Thrallic Empire, Claas painted a red lion on his shield and banners, symbolizing his allegiance to the Prince of the Gods but also the unworthiness he felt to bear the Prince of the Gods’ own golden lion, due to his role in supporting Tiberian (albeit before his treacherous nature was revealed). Claas was nicknamed the Red Lion due to his coat of arms and his prowess in battle.
After Claas’s assassination, Peter was adopted by Torin Capintyre, the Prince of the Gods, and in Torin’s honor adopted the golden lion as his coat of arms. The golden lion head on a blue field is the coat of arms of the Marshals of Heimar to this day.

So I just discovered “Beyond the Western Deep” (drawn by @kobbers ) and OMGoodness I love this webcomic! It’s like Game of Thrones with talking animals, rated PG-13. It has great characters with complex motivations, great worldbuilding and character design, an art style I love, and a gripping series of interlocking plot lines. It’s a rare treat to find a story that I have to read compulsively, but this story was one of them.
One of my favorite characters is Hardin, an ermehn warlord whose morally questionable decisions kick off the events of the story. He’s a mysterious character, with an undisclosed plan to help his people take back their land and dignity from the warlike canid, who can really rock the cape and kilt look. I decided to draw him as he appears in Chapter 2, overlooking the pass guarded by Deltrada Garrison as he plans his assault on the fortress—an assault which marks a major turning point for the other main characters.
I drew Hardin freehand, and used a screenshot of the comic to get the right colors.

The Phantom of the Opera was one of my favorite novels growing up, and I think I am the last person alive who fell in love with the novel before ever hearing about the musical. This is how I imagine Erik, the eponymous Phantom of the Opera, looks according to the book’s description.
Growing up nerdy and socially awkward, Erik became a particularly special literary friend to me. I think everyone at some point or another has felt like there was something good they could offer the world, like they could be something special for someone—a lover, or even a friend—but has felt like there was some quality about themselves that holds them back. Some feature of themselves that, if seen, would make the world recoil in horror. I don’t think I’m particularly special in having felt this way. I think it’s a universal human feeling—only the details are unique to our own little stories.
But that is why we need characters like Erik. That is why we need novels like The Phantom of the Opera. We need the exaggerated pathos of a Gothic novel to put a magnifying glass to the feelings we feel but do not notice that we are feeling. We need the grotesque face of Erik to haunt us because underneath his mask is not merely a death’s head, but that feature of ours that holds us back. We need Christine and Raoul and the Persian to show us that when we give in to our self-loathing and defeatist attitudes and make that feature of ours our identity, we become the very monsters we fear that others see.
What was Erik, truly? Was he a disfigured monster? Or was he a musical genius who just wanted someone to love, into whom he could pour his heart? Isn’t that what we all want? Isn’t that what makes us human? As Gaston Leroux said of his creation, we must pity Erik, because he was the one who couldn’t see his worth behind his face, and he was the one who hid it from the world.
That is what a well-written character is—they are like us, blown out of proportion until we can see all that we are, good and bad, and who can take us by the hand and say, “I understand. But now it is time for you to live, and have the happily ever after that I could not.”
