The Bookshop (original story)

Having achieved a nice, long, warm nap, the orange cat began to unfurl himself and stretch his front legs across the shelf of books, then moved forward to stretch his hind legs behind him. Slowly, he sat up, his striped tail falling gracefully over his front paws, and surveyed his domain.

The bookshop had seen a steady trickle of customers in and out all day. Eliza behind the counter was constantly moving; when she wasn't ringing up books, she was locating books, or taking in donated books, or organizing the ever growing precarious stacks of books, or getting. caught in a conversation with women who just want to talk about the book they've been reading lately.

But Fides was having a very usual day.

His morning was spent walking the topsofthe bookshelves and combing through teh aisles for books that would be needing homes today and knocking them down to teh floor. And then he took his morning nap in the sun streaming through the eastern arching windows.

Then he heard a group of college students come in and strode over to ensure they received a healthy dose of destress-purring, for which he was rewarded with a handful of fishy treats Eliza handed out. And then he took a very brief nap on one of the student's chemistry books.

then a man with a booming voice walked up to the counter in a huff so Fides ran over to stand guard with Eliza - not that she needed help, but everyone calms down a little when they see an orange cat.

Finally, he had found another nap on a particularly cozy bookshelf near the front door. And that was when she walked in.

"Hello!" Eliza sang from behind the counter. "Are you looking for anything?"

"Oh, hello," said the girl's father.

But from his sitting position on the shelf, Fides could see the little girl stood in the doorway, eyes raised to the mammoth sized book shelves spanning the entire Victorian building, mouth gapping open in awe.

And Fides, being the Secret Keeper of the bookshop, could see something else. The dark purple light that surrounded the little girl pulsated angrily.

The cat hopped lithely from his shelf to a short shelf to a stack of books and finally to the floor right in the girl's path. She gasped and clutched her little hands at her chest and then smiled. "Kitty!"

Fides stepped toward her to show how friendly he was and the girl raised a hand toward him. He rubbed his head against her small hand immediately, purring loudly. She giggled to herself and kept petting him for as long as he let her.

But Fides had a job to do. After one more head rub, he took a few steps away from the girl into the aisles of books and looked behind him to make sure she understood. Indeed, she had started to walk after him.

He was glancing through the dwindling stacks at the end of the aisles that Eliza as assembled from the books he knocked off that morning.

Not that stack. Not that stack. No, not that one either. Hmm, maybe, oh yes!

"Mraow!" Fides said to the girl as he turned a corner. The girl giggled and sped up to follow him.

Fides Brough her to a stack of books and began rubbing against it until the top most book fell over and into the girl's way.

When her eyes landed on the cover, her giggle stopped. Her face fell. The invisible purple light around her started to grow, slowly at first, then all of a sudden enveloping the entire aisle. Slowly, she stooped down to the book and picked it up. With one hand, she ran a finger under the title and then stroked the illustration on the front cover for a long time.

Fides gave her a second with the book before stating, "Mraow!" He rubbed against her ankle then sat and looked up at her.

"Riley! Where did you go?" Her father called from the front of the store.

Fides gave a quick meow and starting nodding in his direction. Before turning the corner, he looked back at the girl.

She was looking down at the book again, her eyebrows knit together. Fides gave another "Mraow!" the got her attention and she started following after him again.

"Oh, here you are, Fides," Eliza said as the orange cat came into view. He jumped up onto the checkout counter so she could pet him and whisper, "Were you helping her?"

The girl came into view, still holding the book, and looking up at her father with big watery eyes.

"Hey, Riley, did you find something," her father asked.

The girl gave a sheepish nod and reluctantly handed the book over. Her father knelt down to looked at it and sighed.

Fides watched a the same purple light began to pour from her father now, mixing with her's and filling up the space.

He took the book and bent to kiss his daughter on the top of her head, then stood and handed the book to Eliza behind the counter. "We'll take this one."

"Of course," Eliza offered a warm smile and took the book.

The hand drawn illustration on the cover was a mother looking down and smiling at her daughter.

Eliza's breath caught in her throat but her kept up her smile and began ringing up the book.

Fides moved to the front of the counter, rubbed against the girl again, and prompted some petting from the father. When the book was paid for a bagged, the father lead the girl out of the door. But she stopped for a moment and whispered, "Thank you, kitty."

I’ve had quite a day...not sure how yours went, so let me tell you about mine -

Not So Good Things:

Beta reader for Cat Fic told me they aren’t in the right headspace for beta’ing right now - and I get it. They’ve been swamped with midterms and are now enjoying their Spring Break, and since copyediting is part of their study field...I get that they don’t want to look at anything remotely connected to it for a while. I’d probably be the same, absolutely no hard feelings there.

But that means that Cat Fic will be delayed. The fic itself would probably be good enough to be posted, and @stiltonbasket was already kind enough to look over it once, but I’m a wimp and would like for at least two people to look at it before I toss it to the masses. I’ve asked someone else on twitter but I’m not sure if they’re up to it, so...if any of my followers would like to have a go? Toss me a note!

My mother and I had a falling out again. I will say though I am hormonal right now, so it’s not impossible that I might have snapped at her. I am going to sit down and think it over as soon as I’ve calmed down, but I just feel like the two of us living together becomes increasingly difficult. Not unbearable...we just function better as a mother-daughter duo if we aren’t cooped up together 24/7, you know what I’m saying?

I am feeling increasingly lonely, to a degree that us absolutely unreasonable. I do have people I could reach out to. Somehow though I seem to lack the emotional capacity to do so, but then again I end up feeling alone, and - it’s just frustrating. It’s my fault too, I could get my act together and do something about it, but yeah. Right now, it is what it is.

Good things:

My package is in transit! Which sounds like a weird thing to say, but it’s a pouch in which I can finally properly store all of my crocheting supplies so I can take them with me on the go without losing all of my hooks and stitch markers. I cannot wait to sit down in a park under a tree with no one else around except for a bunch of ducklings and cochet the day away.

BOTH black cats came to say Hi today! Well, one of them sauntered into the house not less than three times; the other one followed her, approached the door cautiously, crept innto the hallway, and disappeared outside again. The curious one kept bothering my mother for pets, and when I sat down on teh couch, kitty flopped onto my lap, started purring like an engine, and even groomed me a few times.

“Think it’s lost?” Stan asked, looking at his younger brother.

📝 Favorite headcanon for your muse?

I *think* this qualifies… generally speaking, I do not like to equate Miqo’te to housecats. Vylette gets irked ic when people call her “catte” or “kitty” especially. And while I will use tail and ears as part of emotes since I think that makes sense (Some of the in game emotes even utilize this) I don’t make her act overly cat like for teh most part. I feel like even if related to cats, Miqo’te likely have evolved past the point of acting like the pets we have at home. I make 2 exceptions… 1) She will purr. Not so much randomly, but when she is extremely happy, relaxed or enjoying herself. Being cuddled by her mate or snuggling up against them is the sort of thing that qualifies. also perhaps receiving some wonderful surprise from a close friend could also elicit this. 2) If she is outdoors and has to sit down she has a ritual of sorts I chalk up to primal instinct. She will circle precisely three times to “pat down the grass” the way animals in the wild will do. She will do this even if the grass is not exceptionally tall. IT is a habit and she does not even realize she is doing it! Thanks @scatteredstoryteller!

Unfortunately i do not effectively draw, and I’m profoundly jealous of those that can. I can manage an unconvincing kidney or an overly complicated scribble on an endocrine system, but they are better described as ‘a spider falling into ink and having a seizure across the paper’ than ‘art’.

Rightfully so. What sort of poodle weight as much as a grown woman? That’s a poorly thought out ruse if ever I saw one. That said, I’ve had someone come into the clinic and ask to take home a syringe full of euthanasia solution for their dog at home, which happened to be human sized. We firmly declined.

It’s a fair comparison for soft tissue surgery, which is the more common surgery. Facial surgery takes a little more finesse, but orthopedic surgery is more like carpentry.

I’d never heard them called ‘Scottish Straights’ before this site. I’m sure there’s a joke to be made from that name somewhere. They lack the gene for osteochondrodysplasia but are equally likely to develop the genetic heart and kidney diseases.

If you mean whether they also get osteochondrodysplasia, then it doesn’t appear to be so at this stage. This s a relatively new breed though, and I’m yet to see one in Australia, so will await further data.

It eats a whole bunch of starch and potassium that won’t do any harm to a normal cat. It’s far from a balanced diet, but the occasional banana nibble doesn’t concern me.

You can get blood levels for various vitamins and minerals checked (they’re expensive though), but I would suspect this is more likely behavioural, especially because she’s after chocolate and it’s easy to ‘spoil’ a dog who’s pregnant for the first time. I wouldn’t give in to her, especially with regard to teh chocolate.

A pug x beagle is not a ‘new pug’. While such a cross reduces some problems, It’s not going to solve all of them and is a lazy, short term solution. This is particularly the case if you have breed standards, and public desire, striving towards a flatter and flatter face.

I have talked about this before here.

What I personally would like to see is new gene infusions from multiple suitable breeds, then back crossing those mixes to pug lines, selecting for better faces, hips and spines. This will take a global effort and a lot of work to organize, but it would be the best long term solution.

I don’t see really yellow cats very often (they look like their blood has been flooded with yellow highlighter), but I have about a 50:50 track record for getting them to survive. By the time they’re that jaundiced, the poor things are very, very sick.

I tend not to see this. For young kittens their main problems from being strays are parasites and malnutrition, which you can correct with some parasite treatment and good tucker. Older cats may have picked up viral infections, FIV and Feline Leukaemia being the most important too, but if they have avoided these specific diseases then they’re pretty hardy. Pedigree cattery cats may avoid the malnutrition, but they’re not guaranteed to be free of these diseases, and it’s common to see them with cat flu, so they’re not notably better off.

I recommend everyone have a financial plan for if their pet ever gets sick, and for most people that’s insurance. However, I’m not a financial adviser so I don’t recommend any brand in particular.

I’m not a herpetologist, but firstly reptiles don’t have a gender, they have a sex. In many species it has been determined that temperature does play a role in skewing the percentages of either sex (pH and other water parameters can do this in fish too). Wikipedia has a good starting article.

Yes, we have that type of grass seed, but we don’t often use that name. They’re just a grass seed or an *expletive* grass seed.

The police usually have their own vets they prefer, but I see the occasional guide dog or seeing eye dog. They have a few extra challenges when it comes to medicating them, because instructions like “administer half a mil” is a challenge when you’re vision impaired.

I have treated a custom’s dog before, and had to write him a medical certificate to excuse him from work while he was healing after surgery.

It’s possible, you could technically ‘crack’ any articular joint. I suppose he might also be cleaning his claws, but I can’t really speculate more than that.

That’s an interesting and difficult question because video games either have very short days or lots of bad things happen and you’re likely to die

While there is a certain appeal to survival games where literally all you’re expected to do is find yourself some food and not annoy the monsters, I would probably choose the Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time. I’m still hugely fond of that game from my childhood, it was very pretty and the danger levels were manageable. And it was just pretty and peaceful a lot of the time.
