With Louisville’s bike share system launching in less than five days, crews have been hard at work distributing stations across the city. And the photos are starting to make their way out!
Bike share is a system of rentable bikes considered part of a city’s overall transportation network. It helps bridge gaps that are unwalkable but too short to drive. Or it helps locals and tourists see the city in new ways. It helps students make it from UofL to Central Park for a study break, and a West Main worker make it to lunch in Nulu. And it’s just a lot of fun.

Louisville’s system is called LouVelo. When it opens on May 15, it will contain 305 bikes distributed over 28 stations in its first phase. Stations are located on a major north-south axis extending from Downtown, SoBro, and Old Louisville. (This fall, 15 more stations are planned at the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus.) More stations are located in Nulu and Butchertown, and at the Waterfront.

Future phases call for extending LouVelo’s footprint west into Portland and Russell and east into the Highlands. Mayor Greg Fischer was excited about the growth possibilities of bike share here at a late-April launch announcement. “We’re off to a good start with 300 [bikes],” he said. “There’s no reason why it can’t be 500 or a thousand, and then two thousand.”
First announced in 2014 and delayed multiple times, it’s exciting to see LouVelo hit the streets. And the colorful logo and color scheme lend the system a friendly and inviting tone. We couldn’t be more thrilled.

The first station was installed Monday at Spalding University’s Mother Catherine Spalding Square on Breckinridge Street. Now they’ve popped up all around town. Each station is a solar-powered standalone unit, simplifying the installation process. Once they’re assembled and loaded onto a truck, crews simply set them into place on the sidewalk or street.

Cariocas e turistas se encantaram quando, em outubro de 2011, um sistema de aluguel de bicicletas, o Bike Rio, tingiu de laranja — cor do banco patrocinador do projeto — as ruas e ciclovias da cidade. Passados quase seis anos, a lua de mel — foram 20 milhões de viagens no período —, parece ter acabado. Usuários reclamam de uma série de problemas, que vão desde equipamentos quebrados à dificuldade de se encontrar um ponto de aluguel que esteja funcionando. Na tarde desta terça-feira, o aplicativo Bike Rio mostrava que 37 das 260 estações espalhadas pelas zonas Sul, Norte e Oeste estavam inoperantes (14,2% do total). Uma nova empresa assumiu a operação no mês passado com a promessa de melhorar o serviço, mas, até agora, não há prazo para a implantação das mudanças previstas, que incluem a compra de três mil bicicletas, de modelos mais modernos, e sistema antifurto. Enquanto as novidades não chegam, turistas e cariocas experimentam a frustração de muitas vezes continuarem a pé quando desejam pedalar. Se não, teriam debitado o atraso no meu cartão. A estação Ferreira Viana, na Praia do Flamengo, também estava sem funcionar. Segundo o administrador Luís Eduardo de Castro, não é possível alugar bicicletas no local há duas semanas. Mas não é só responsabilidade da empresa as dificuldades que os usuários estão enfrentando. A má educação também tem uma boa parcela de culpa já que, com frequência, o funcionamento do programa é interrompido devido a atos de vandalismo. Desde que a Tembici assumiu a operação do sistema, em maio, foram 260 bicicletas vandalizadas, cerca de 10% do total. As estações onde há mais estragos são AquaRio, Pontal, Centro de Convenções, Lúcio Costa, Posto 9 da Barra, Rodoviária Novo Rio, Praça Coronel Castelo Branco, Metrô Praça Quinze, Praia do Pepê e São Conrado. A publicitária Beatriz Medeiros, moradora do Leblon, aluga bicicletas semanalmente e lamenta sempre se deparar com equipamentos avariados nas estações. — Queria usar diariamente, mas nem sempre há bicicleta disponível e acabo optando por outro meio de transporte. Além disso, quando chegamos a uma estação, normalmente encontramos muitas delas quebradas, sem banco ou com o pneu furado — lamenta. Segundo a empresa, das “laranjinhas” que sofreram danos, 150 já foram recuperadas e voltaram a circular. A Tambici informou ainda que foram disponibilizadas 100 novas bikes. Outras 300, de acordo com a operadora, serão entregues nas próximas duas semanas. No mês passado, 41 foram roubadas. A intenção da empresa é mudar o sistema de aluguel e oferecer modelos mais modernos. Três mil bicicletas já foram compradas e devem chegar ao Rio em setembro, mas a Tambici ainda não pode colocá-las nas ruas porque há um impasse contratual. A companhia comprou a Samba Transportes Sustentáveis, que operava o serviço e tinha um contrato com a prefeitura válido até o segundo semestre do ano que vem. Para que a Tembici troque as bicicletas, seria necessário esperar o fim do prazo ou realizar uma alteração no contrato firmado com a Samba e herdado por ela. A Subsecretaria de Projetos Estratégicos afirma, no entanto, que “não negocia aditivo ao contrato da prestação do serviço de compartilhamento de bicicletas no momento”. Quando o imbróglio for solucionado — a empresa afirma estar negociando o prazo com o município — , a Tembici promete pôr em operação bicicletas mais robustas, com pneus em aro 24, substituindo os atuais, de 26. A mudança pode diminuir o número de roubos, já que as peças com aro menor têm menos valor de mercado. Mas não é só. As bicicletas vão contar com uma trava antirroubo desenvolvida especialmente para o Brasil pela empresa PBSC Urban Solutions, do Canadá. — Para o ladrão conseguir levar, só quebrando — diz Luciana Nicola, superintendente de Relações Governamentais e Institucionais do Itaú Unibanco, que patrocina o serviço. As novas bicicletas vão ter também bancos mais confortáveis e reguláveis, além de cesto adaptável para o tamanho da bagagem, com luz de LED, que também será colocada no banco, para aumentar a segurança do ciclista. A cor laranja e o peso, de 16kg, continuarão os mesmos, assim como a configuração de marchas de três velocidades. MODELOS ATUAIS DEVEM SER DOADOS As mudanças devem ocorrer também nas estações. Elas foram repensadas de maneira a otimizar a quantidade de bicicletas estacionadas. O modelo fixo será substituído pelo modular, que poderá receber mais bicicletas, conforme a necessidade. Cada estação poderá ficar com 20 vagas, em vez das dez ou doze atuais. A ideia já é realidade em cidades como Nova York. O painel de pagamento também ficará mais moderno, com comunicação sem fio e interface digital mais fácil de ser usada. As bicicletas atuais não vão ser aposentadas. Uma das ideias, diz Luciana, é capacitar moradores de rua para que eles usem as bikes para fazer entregas. Segundo ela, o assunto já está sendo tratado com as prefeituras dos cinco municípios onde o projeto funciona: — Vamos doar essas bicicletas antigas e dar a elas um papel social, para que gerem renda. Estamos iniciando essa conversa com as prefeituras, mas em São Paulo, as negociações já estão avançadas — disse. No Rio, as bicicletas representam 5% do total dos meios de transporte utilizados para o deslocamento na cidade, seja para lazer ou para trabalho. European Bike Sharing Cashes in on Opportunities Stoked by Innovations and Government Support
Urban dwellers' preference for green transport and desire to save fuel and parking costs alter mobility patterns, finds Frost & Sullivan's Mobility team
LONDON, Feb. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- As densely populated urban centres all over the world grapple with issues of rising fuel consumption and carbon emissions, green mobility solutions such as public bike sharing service (BSS) are rising to prominence. This shift away from personal cars towards sustainable mobility solutions is bolstered by the high parking fees, volatile fuel costs and growing congestion in busy urban areas.
"Urban commuters are considering multiple mobility options to optimise travel time and convenience for short distance travel of less than five kilometres," said Frost & Sullivan Mobility Research Analyst Debanjali Sen. European Bike Sharing Market, Forecast to 2025 is part of Frost & Sullivan's Automotive & Transportation Growth Partnership Subscription. The insight finds that the bike sharing fleet will be more than double in size from 151,302 units in 2016 to 341,250 units in 2025. Southern and Western Europe have high BSS activity. About 196 cities in Southern Europe have more than 35,000 rental bikes; in Western Europe, 150 cities have nearly 70,000 rental bikes. Spain and France are the strongest markets, but the UK, Germany and Italy are expanding quickly.

Although BSS enjoys escalating demand, high insurance costs could prove a deterrent to its wide-scale adoption. Furthermore, safety guidelines of bike sharing programmes are often not aligned with those mandated by insurance schemes, necessitating deeper analysis and resolution of the insurance issue.
"Owing to the often prohibitive capital and operational costs of running BSS schemes, cities and bike sharing operators are likely to depend on third-party sponsorships," noted Sen. "Some prominent providers, such as JCDecaux, Nextbike, PBSC and Smoov, employ the advertising model. Their success will encourage companies from different verticals like health, lifestyle, banking and foods to enter the BSS market as sponsors, advertising partners and financers for brand activation opportunities."
