Like... Passive being inside of Nightmare and because of his negativity, it only makes Nightmare stronger. And the only times Nightmare is weakened is in those rare moments that Passive finds something funny or beautiful. Only for Nightmare to ruin it as fast as possible to prevent his escape and secure his power.

And it results in Nightmare's cruelty, snuffing out anything good around him. Because if Passive manages to escape, Nightmare won't be able to stay stable and disintegrate or rejoin all of negativity and losing his autonomy/sense of self.

Kind of like a member of a hive trying to stay independent.

And Passive is just tired of everything around him being ruined just by being around him - even if he does get free, he can't help by try and hide himself away to keep anything else from being destroyed.

In his mind, he really is what brings evil. The villagers hurt him because he was labeled as evil, his mother tree is dead because of him, his brother turned to stone, the deaths of immeasurable people...

And because of that self-loathing, Nightmare builds a cage around him, using him like a soul of his own.

But there's also a kind of symbolism to it. At his core, Nightmare really is just a scared kid.
