• Satoru Anabuki (Japanese IJAAF Ace)
Lieutenant Colonel Satoru Anabuki 穴吹 智, Anabuki Satoru, was depending on the source, the second or third highest-scoring flying ace of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in World War II, with 39 victories (51 claimed).
Born into a farming family in the Kagawa Prefecture, he graduated high school to take the entrance examination for the Juvenile Flying Soldier School and entered the Tokyo Army Aviation School in April 1938, In Oct 1940, he was enrolled in Tachi'arai flight school in Fukuoka Prefecture graduating in March 1941 in the 6th Juvenile Soldier Course and receiving a promotion to corporal in October. He was assigned to the 3rd Company of the 50th Air Squadron, stationed on Formosa in 1941. With the outbreak of the Pacific War, he fought in the conquest of the Philippines, where he claimed his first victory, a Curtiss P-40, on December 22nd, 1941 flying a Ki-27 aircraft. On February 9th, 1942, he shot down two more.
He returned to Japan with his squadron in Apr 1942, where the squadron was re-equipped with Ki-43 Hayabusa aircraft; Anabuki named his new fighter "Fubuki", partially based on his own surname. In Jun 1942, his squadron was transferred to Burma, where he would see combat over Burma, India, and southwestern China. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in Dec 1942. On December 20th, 1942, he shot down a Blenheim bomber over Magwe, Burma, the first of many bomber victories. On December 24th, he shot down three British Hurricane fighters in combat over Magwe, Burma. In May 1943, he received a new Ki-43 fighter; he named this new aircraft "Kimikaze" after his wife Kimiko. He was seriously wounded in combat while flying "Kimikaze" over Rangoon, Burma on October 8th, 1943; after initial recuperation, he was transferred to the Akeno Army Flying School in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan in Feb 1944.
In late 1944, after being cleared to fly once again, he shot down four US F6F Hellcat fighters over Takao, Taiwan and the Philippine Islands while ferrying Ki-84 Hayate fighters from Japan southwards. In December 1944, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant major. In the final months of the war, he was an instructor at Akeno with frequent combat assignments; in this role, he scored his 39th and final confirmed victory (53rd claimed victory), a B-29 bomber, over Japan while flying a Ki-100 fighter. After the war, he joined the Police Reserve in 1950, eventually reaching the rank of captain. Later, he joined the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, becoming a helicopter pilot stationed in northeastern Japan; he retired from his military career in 1971 at the rank of lieutenant colonel. He worked for Japan Airlines before retiring in 1984. Many of Anabuki's victory claims during the Burma Campaign have been contested by comparing them to Allied records of lost aircraft on particular occasions. In several cases, there were no records of Allied planes even operating in the area where the claims were made. Anabuki passed away on an unknown date in June of 2005 at the age of 83 years old.

In 1886 a young English writer published a review of the twenty-fifth fascicle of K. M. Ganguli’s monumental translation of the Mahabharata. The tale of the great Bharata war had clearly failed to impress him. In order to convince his readership of the worthlessness of the ‘interminable work’, it was to descriptions of battle that he turned for the most damning supporting evidence. In case his own judgement of the text (the general tenor of which emerges from a list of the adjectives he uses — ‘monstrous … nightmare-like … monotonous … impossible … nebulous’) should fail to persuade, he reproduced a short section of battle narrative:
"And he soon covered the entire welkin with clusters of blood drinking arrows, and as the infinite rays of the powerful sun entering a small vessel are contracted within it for want of space, so the countless shafts of Arjuna could not find room for their expansion … And that hero of inconceivable energy overwhelmed, by means of his celestial weapons, all the great bowmen of the enemy, although they were possessed of great prowess. And Arjuna then shot three and seventy arrows of sharp points at Drona, and ten at Dussaha, and eight at Drona’s son and twelve at Dussasana, and three at Kripa the son of Saradwat. And that slayer of foes pierced Bhishma, the son of Santanu with six arrows and King Duryodhana with a hundred."
The name of the reviewer was Rudyard Kipling.(1) To him it was clear that detailed discussion of such ‘profitless’ stuff was unnecessary: all he had to do was to assure readers of the Civil and Military Gazette that the ‘interesting epic’ consisted of a sequence of passages ‘appealing, exactly as much as this one, to the Western mind’. Such ‘fantastic creations’, he mused, were ‘monstrous, painted in all the crude colours that a barbaric hand can apply; moved by machinery that would be colossal were it not absurd, and placed in all their doings beyond the remotest pale of human sympathy’.
(1) The review appeared in Civil and Military Gazette of 24 August 1886; it is reprinted in Thomas Pinney (ed.), Kipling’s India: Uncollected Sketches 1884—88 (London: Papermac, 1987), pp. 175-8. I have silently corrected three typographic errors in the spelling of proper names.
-- from the introduction to John D. Smith's The Mahabharata: An Abridged Translation (p. liv-lv)

Boeing F-15EX completes first phase of integrated testing
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/14/2023 - 11:00am in Military
The F-15EX recently completed the first phase of its initial operational test and evaluation (IT&E) program with the launch of an AGM-158 joint air-surface missile (JASSM), the highest-range air-to-ground missile in the U.S. Department of Defense combat inventory.
The JASSM has a range of about 230 miles, according to a U.S. Air Force information leaflet.
The F-15EX is the first U.S. Air Force aircraft to undergo an integrated program of tests and evaluations. The combination of the IOT&E and DOT&E effort is unique to the program, in that the existing test data of the legacy F-15C/D and F-15E can be compared with the data from the new EX, with a special focus on the new features unique to EX, such as its advanced processor and fly-by-wire control system. The EX also has more weapon stations than the F-15E, allowing it to carry more war material.
In November 2022 tests, the F-15EX demonstrated that it can carry up to 12 AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles.
“Proving the ability of the F-15EX to employ three JASSMs after witnessing the validation of the air-to-air domain paper with a load of 12 AMRAAM that it can fire is incredible,” said Major Calvin Conner, commander of the F-15 division of the 85º Test and Evaluation Squadron. "The firepower that four F-15EX jets bring to a combatant commander is tremendous."
JASSM was launched during the Combat Hammer exercise, held at Hill Air Base in Utah in August. The shot was performed simultaneously with the 53ª Wing Weapon System Evaluation Program, which required a collaborative effort between the 83º and 86º Fighter Weapon Squadrons. The details of the shot - the targets, ranges, etc. - are confidential, but have been strongly evaluated, from the construction of the weapon to the use and analysis of the missile routes, to the target.
"This test shows innovation and results in the rapid delivery of state-of-the-art capabilities to the fighter. That's exactly what our fighters need from us," said Mark Sears, vice president of Boeing Fighters. "The F-15EX is the most affordable and immediate way to renew the capacity and upgrade the capabilities of the U.S. Air Force and we are ready to deliver additional aircraft later this year."

With Phase I of the F-15EX IT&E completed, the data from this phase will be analyzed for the final report to guide a total production decision determination in the coming months.

The U.S. Air Force plans to buy 104 F-15EX fighters, although this number could rise to 110 if some changes to the 2024 fiscal year defense bill are enacted.
Boeing begins delivering fighters with combat capability to U.S. Air Force squads later this year.

Monopods
Monopods (also called sciapods, skiapods, skiapodes) were mythological dwarf-like creatures with a single, large foot extending from a leg centred in the middle of their bodies. The names monopod and skiapod (σκιάποδες) are both Greek, respectively meaning "one-foot" and "shadow-foot".
Monopods appear in Aristophanes' play The Birds, first performed in 414 BC. They are described by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, where he reports travelers' stories from encounters or sightings of Monopods in India. Pliny remarks that they are first mentioned by Ctesias in his book Indika, a record of the view of Persians of India which only remains in fragments. Pliny describes Monopods like this:
He [Ctesias] speaks also of another race of men, who are known as Monocoli, who have only one leg, but are able to leap with surprising agility. The same people are also called Sciapodae, because they are in the habit of lying on their backs, during the time of the extreme heat, and protect themselves from the sun by the shade of their feet.
Philostratus mentions Skiapodes in his Life of Apollonius of Tyana, which was cited by Eusebius in his Treatise Against Hierocles. Apollonius of Tyana believes the Skiapodes live in India and Ethiopia, and asks the Indian sage Iarkhas about their existence.
St. Augustine (354–430) mentions the "Skiopodes" in The City of God, Book 16, Chapter 8 entitled "Whether Certain Monstrous Races of Men Are Derived From the Stock of Adam or Noah's Sons", and mentions that it is uncertain whether such creatures exist.
Reference to the legend continued into the Middle Ages, for example with Isidore of Seville in his Etymologiae, where he writes:
The race of Sciopodes are said to live in Ethiopia; they have only one leg, and are wonderfully speedy. The Greeks call them σκιαπόδες ("shade-footed ones") because when it is hot they lie on their backs on the ground and are shaded by the great size of their foot.
The Hereford Mappa Mundi, drawn c. 1300, shows a sciapod on one side of the world, as does a world map drawn by Beatus of Liébana (c. 730 – c. 800).
A race of the "One-Legged",or the "Uniped" was allegedly encountered by Thorfinn Karlsefni and his group of Icelandic settlers in North America in the early 11th century, according to the Saga of Erik the Red. The presence of "unipedes maritimi" in Greenland was marked on Claudius Clavus's map dated 1427.
According to the saga, Karlsefni Thorvald Eiriksson and others assembled a search party for Thorhall, and sailed around Kjalarnes and then south. After sailing for a long time, while moored on the south side of a west-flowing river, they were shot at by a one-footed man (einfœtingr), and Thorvald died from an arrow wound.
The saga goes on to relate that the party went northward and approached what they guessed to be Einfœtingaland ("Land of the One-Legged" or "Country of the Unipeds").
According to Carl A. P. Ruck, the Monopods's cited existence in India refers to the Vedic Aja Ekapad ("Not-born Single-foot"), an epithet for Soma. Since Soma is a botanical deity the single foot would represent the stem of an entheogenic plant or fungus.
John of Marignolli (1338–1353) provides another explanation of these creatures. Quote from his travels from India:
The truth is that no such people do exist as nations, though there may be an individual monster here and there. Nor is there any people at all such as has been invented, who have but one foot which they use to shade themselves withal. But as all the Indians commonly go naked, they are in the habit of carrying a thing like a little tent-roof on a cane handle, which they open out at will as a protection against sun or rain. This they call a chatyr; I brought one to Florence with me. And this it is which the poets have converted into a foot.

“Col. Warden Recalls Hindu 'Invasion’,” Border Cities Star. February 16, 1933. Page 5. ---- Addresses Lions; Plan To Make Jobs Is Advanced ---- THE Koma Gato Maru incident in Vancouver in 1914 was related by Colonel John W. Warden, O.B.E., D S O., at last night's meeting of the Windsor Lions Club, held in the Norton-Palmer Hotel. The other features of the program were Edward Harding's plan for the relief of unemployment and the announcement that Dr. H. Irvine Wiley was chosen as the new district governor of Lions.
'"When war is in the offing," declared Colonel Warden, "nations who are anxious to go to war show it by their plans. Previous to the world war Germany planned against England. They sent 300 strikers out to the coal mines in British Columbia to bring on a strike a year before the war. This was done so that no coal would be available for the navy or commercial purposes.
"I was stationed there just one year then and it presented a delicate situation. We rounded up 100 men but we could not find the ringleaders. To find them we said that we were going out of town and we left town but waited just outside of the town. As soon as we had left 1,500 men gathered in one place and we were notified immediately. We came back to town and captured the ringleaders and had them brought up for trial. This was done in spite of considerable disturbance from the women folks.
Wishing to cause trouble within the British Empire Germany collected 350 Hindu deserters of the Indian Army, took them to Shanghai and sent them to Canada. British naval authorities were watching their movements and notified us in Vancouver. We were told to handle the situation with diplomacy and to avoid trouble.
'Canadian officials told us not to allow them to land by any means. When the boat, the Koma Gato Maru, pulled into the harbor took 20 sea-going launches and a tug out to meet it. The man in charge of immigration was not familiar with East Indians and lost their respect by going to them first. A man who was then a member of Parliament and is now a cabinet minister made the same mistake.
"They often promised to go back peaceably but their promises were only tricks to get supplies. '"Immigration officials sent 200 policemen out at midnight to surprise the Indians but they were waiting and drove the police away by throwing missiles of every kind down at them in the smaller boat. I was struck in the back with a large lump of coal and then they cut the grappling ropes.
'"Finally I went out to their ship and told them that if they did not leave by five o'clock we would bring a warship out and make them leave. The warship came alongside with men marching on deck and at two minutes to five they cast anchor and moved out the harbor under our escort. As we left them they took off their sandals and threw, them at us and spit at us.
"When they got back to India they started a riot and two-thirds of them were killed and the rest captured. Then the war started and I left but shortly afterwards our interpreter who had been threatened with myself was shot while in the courtroom.
"This is just an example." concluded Colonel Warden, "of how other nations seek to make trouble for Great Britain when they are planning a war."
A plan for the relief of unemployment was submitted by Mr. Harding and a committee was appointed to present it to the Border Chamber of Commerce. The plan has been tried and found sound in Rochester, New York, and now other cities are undertaking it. It calls for a canvass of all citizens and obtaining their pledges to spend whatever amount they can in the next three months on improving homes, factories, stores, buildings and grounds and for the purchase of new articles. In Rochester and Monroe County the residents pledged themselves to spend $6.026.351.95 during the next three months. The plan is designed to prevent hoarding of money and to create employment.
[AL: A remarkable display of the racist, classist, conspiracy theorizing of the Canadian military and political elite, especially the ‘small fry’ of this class - local administrators, politicians, police, prison, military and capitalists, the powerful on a municipal or rural level, who can only understand events in their time as the acts of agitators and foreign enemies. It’s clearly a post-facto argument, too, sort of like The Simpsons’ Moe claiming ‘even when I knew it was the bears, I knew it was them [the immigrants].’ People like Warden opposed to Sikh immigration or strikers didn’t hide behind ‘imperial Germany did it’ at the time - they just argued that White Canada had to keep out the wrong colour and punish the labour agitator. The implication here, too, is that the unrest of the Great Depression was being caused by the Soviet Union.]

So there's a few reasons for it. The average person in America isn't super likely to be exposed to rabies so there's not really a need to go around doing pre-exposure shots for everyone (it's also two shots for the pre-exposure, separated by like a week), and they're p fucking expensive.
People who ARE at risk normally do get vaccinated! I was trying to volunteer at a wildlife center (didn't work out cause I ended up having a rough year) and while you could work with some animals, like birds, without it you were NOT allowed to work AT ALL with any species considered a "rabies vector" unless you had the pre exposure shots.
And, from what I remember, rabies isn't SUPER common in the US? Like it's still here obviously, and how prevelant it is varies based on state but it's just not something we need to worry about regularly. I do wish people were more educated on it cause I have seen people in the past think it's not worth getting the shots, or that it's "Curable" rather than "preventable". (IE if you've been infected you can prevent it from taking hold but once you show symptoms, it's over)
It's more prevalent in other countries, I remember doing research on annual deaths from rabies (hi I have health anxiety and always worry about rabies even tho I know I haven't been exposed lmao) and India has a fairly high annual death rate from it compared to the US. Plus there are some countries that are considered "rabies free"
SHIT.

omg, im the anon who prompted the advent fic you just wrote! thank you so much!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻
first of all, i love how vk is introduced as being an absolute dear with kids. and then vk sending pics of himself dressed as santa clause to joey? joey complaining about the white eyebrows? vk having joey's number saved as pyaar? hellllpppp i'm melting!! 😭😭😭🥹🥹🥹
awww i love how vk noticed shub almost immediately, and became curious about him. although why did the carer sigh when introducing shubman? 👀👀 is it just because he's a very shy kid, or is he troublesome?
the cricket scene!!! oh no, poor shub, being used to playing alone 😭😭 although I love that vk played with him and broke the ice a bit. also, vk's brief vision of him and joey teaching shubman batting and moulding him into the best batsman india has ever seen was just perfect!!! i can so see joey and vk bickering 10 years down the line whether shubman will play for india or england 😂😂😂
also, i ove the mentions of how christmas has become such an important holiday to vk after he began dating joey. and santa claus is coming to town being his favourite song bc joey hums it so often. and then the kitchen scene where vk kept adding spices to the dish joey was preparing! cross-cultural relationships are very sweet, aren't they?
I laughed like anything at joey warning vk that a kid is for life not just for christmas 😂😂😂
I love how joey was also instantly taken with shubman, and then the surprise they planned for joey was just awesome! i love shub initially calling them sir, which turns into "pitaa" and "daddy" that's so cute wtf?! 😭🥰🫶🏻 ngl, was a bit surprised to see shub calling vk pitaa, because that's basically a very ancient word for father in sanskrit-hindi, usually all kids call their dads "papa" or "baba". and pitaa is usually given a suffix denoting honour, like pitaji, or pitashree. the latter was only ever used by people in the middle ages, pitaji is still common :)
to sum it up, it was the perfect combination of fluffy, cute and christmassy! would love to see more oneshots about this little family! 🥰🥰
Ahh! Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed it :D
RE Shubman - I really am trying this year to keep myself to one shots and keep things max 4000 words, so I didn't really have time in this to answer all the questions I posed. You can make it up for yourself!
Ehehe, they totally would argue whether he should play for England or India :P
Very cute indeed!
On that, please blame Google xD Indian isn't my culture so I sought the internet for the word - apologies if it was too formal!

[ad_1] Source: AIFF -AIFF Media Team CHONBURI, THAILAND: The India U17 men’s team started their AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers Group D campaign in style with a 13-0 beatdown of Brunei Darussalam at the Chonburi Stadium on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. India’s assault started right from the first whistle as the Blue Colts dominated the ball and constantly pressured an inexperienced Brunei in the right areas. They took the lead in the eighth minute, Vishal Yadav entering the box from the right and slotting it in to give India a deserved lead. The goal had been coming, and in truth, India could have been out of sight in the first 10. It didn’t matter, though, because soon enough, the chances and goals flew unabated. In the 24th minute, Md Arbash doubled the lead, winning and then successfully converting a penalty. Five minutes later, Arbash turned provider when Brunei failed to deal with his corner at the near post. Vishal Yadav duly put away the loose ball into the net to give India a three-goal cushion. Arbash’s playmaking continued to trouble Brunei and in the 38th minute, he drove in from the left to cut the ball for Bharat Lairenjam. Lairenjam had plenty of time to pick his slot and he duly did to extend India’s already formidable lead. Mohammed Kaif put the cherry on top of a five-star first half with a header from a corner in the 42nd minute. India led 5-0 at the break. Yadav completed his hat trick six minutes into the second half, picking up a through ball, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing smoothly. With the game wrapped up, coach Ishfaq Ahmed rang in the changes with an eye to give his bench players some experience on the pitch. Just after the hour mark captain Ngamgouhou Mate capitalised on some sloppy defending to score India’s seventh goal. A badly cleared free kick offered Mate a chance from close range to put the ball in the net. Substitute Manbhakupar Malngiang got a goal of his own in the 74th minute, picking up a through ball, rounding the goalkeeper, and finishing with ease. Hemneichung Lunkim, who had been among the most prolific players for India — without getting on the scoresheet — finally got his reward in the 82nd minute. The forward picked up a loose ball inside the box, and on the turn shot it with his weaker foot, into the goal. A few minutes later, India got into double digits via Azlaan Shah’s goal from Rishi Singh’s assist. With Brunei’s players visibly fading and fatigued, India slotted two more goals in the final minutes of the game, Mahmad Sami and Sumit Sharma adding the goals to make it a clean dozen. Just when it seemed the game was done, came the pick of the bunch. In injury time, Usham Thoungamba Singh picked up the ball outside the box before letting loose from long range. The ball slotted perfectly into the corner to give India a 13th goal from an utterly dominant performance. India U17: Suraj Singh Aheibam (GK), Karish Soram, Thoungamba Singh, Mohammed Kaif, Ngamgouhou Mate (C), Sumit Sharma, Md Arbash (Azlaan Shah 78′), Levis Zangminlun (Manbhakupar Malngiang 58′), Vishal Yadav (Mahmad Sami 58′), Hemneichung Lunkim (Ahongshangbam Samson 84′), Bharat Lairenjam (Ningthoukhongjam Rishi Singh 58′). India 13 (Vishal Yadav 8′, 29′, 52′, Md Arbash 24’p, Bharat Lairenjam 38′, Mohammed Kaif 42′, Ngamgouhou Mate 65′, Manbhakupar Malngiang 74′, Hemneichung Lunkim 82′, Azlaan Shah 84′, Mahmad Sami 86′, Sumit Sharma 88′, Usham Singh Thoungamba 90+4′) beat Brunei Darussalam 0 The post India ransack Brunei in U17 Asian qualifiers opener appeared first on Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles | Revsports.
