Ozdust Duet - for two marimbas
I was inspired by Austin Keck‘s video of his arrangement of Defying Gravity to make a marimba version of the Ozdust Duet. That scene of the movie was one of the most emotional experiences I’ve ever had in a movie theater. It reminded me of how precious it is to have friends that see me and love me for who I am, just as I am. I hope you all have the perfect dance partners to join you on the floor whenever you decide to cut a rug, however you see fit. Sometimes, you really do have to “not give a twig about what anyone thinks.” Happy dancing! 😉
To clarify; I arranged, recorded, performed and edited this myself. Let me know if y’all want the sheet music. 🩷💚

hey hey another thing. Everyone noticed how subdued movie Elphaba is relative to book/musical Elphaba, right? Book Elphaba's whole thing is being loudly independent and making her own bold choices (then getting [metaphorically] pushed down 5 flights of stairs for having the gall to exist). Musical Elphaba is less of a reddit atheist than her book counterpart, but still plenty abrasive and, ultimately, forges her own path (with its own relatively less tragic consequences).
Movie Elphaba? She doesn't choose to go to Shiz. Her father's planning on keeping her tucked away in their family home until the day she dies, where she can't hurt anyone or further embarrass the Thropp name. Morrible's the one who gets her enrolled, fully aware that Elphaba has no choice if she doesn't want to spend the rest of her life stuck at home, only ever leaving to accompany Nessa. This Elphaba doesn't choose to go to school, she doesn't choose to go to the Emerald City, and, really, she doesn't even choose to defy gravity -- there is no alternative, she can't live if she stays with the Wizard, especially not after Morrible's preemptive announcement of her wickedness. Movie Elphaba's trapped by her destiny, walking the path laid out for her. With one crucial exception, of course: Glinda, baby, that's right, the only thing this Elphie's ever chosen for herself, the only thing she's been allowed to choose, is to have Glinda at her side!
This softer, more noticeably scared Elphaba creates the extremely juicy dynamic of visibly relying on Glinda for support. As soon as they become pals, Elphaba's latched onto her, the only person who isn't scared of her magic, the first person to care for Elphaba's well-being. She chooses to befriend Glinda, she chooses to bring Glinda to the Emerald City, she chooses to ask Glinda to defy gravity with her. This is what makes this version of Defying Gravity so delicious: Elphaba's never truly believed in herself! The only reason she ever started was because Glinda was there to encourage her, and now, at this crucial moment, this Elphaba, who has lived her life so terrified of the harm she could cause others, has the confidence to not only risk her own life with a spell she's never tried, but the life of her one and only friend!
And Glinda refuses! And it's totally understandable now! Of course this Glinda would say no -- she's not scared of what could happen to her, she's scared of what will happen to Elphie, and standing there, she gets it. She understands the role she's played in Elphaba's life. Glinda knows Elphaba wouldn't be there, ready to declare war on the Wizard, if Glinda hadn't been by her side the entire time, and she has to refuse. She has to. Elphaba's request isn't come with me, we're stronger together, it's I can't do this without you, I'm not strong enough, and Glinda KNOWS that's not true. The only way she can express this is by sending Elphie off on her own, to straighten her hat and wish her luck. It's the only way Elphie will take flight and finally realize that she's got the power to do anything she wants, if she just tries.
#wicked#gelphie#meant to include some aspect of this in the other post but I caught sleepy bitch disease#then got whammied by the OST on shuffle hitting me with no one mourns the wicked -> ozdust duet -> wizard and I -> defying gravity yesterda#it's so hard to drive when you're trying very hard not to cry#and even worse when you have this shit rotating in your mind like kebab

honestly with how much they weaponized the For Good music in this movie, we should expect nothing less than literal death while watching Wicked: For Good
#it’s in the opening when Glinda is flashing back after being asked if she was Elphaba’s friend#and the Ozdust Duet weaves it around#probably some other places too#they want us DEAD#wicked part one#wicked for good#wicked#wicked movie

Damn, the Wicked movie really was as good as everyone said.
#wicked#listen I majored in musical theatre I’m exactly qualified to have strong opinions here#and they did a damn good job#I never realized the stage version felt rushed until suddenly it wasn’t#and every single new change felt purposeful#and the Ozdust duet! I cried!#I never cared about much about dancing through life before but it’s so incredibly pivotal to the movie#and something bad felt actually ominous!

the real and true reason why they had to split wicked up into two movies, is because they knew we would need a year to process the ozdust duet scene before they could hit us with for good. there would simply be too much sapphic power for us to handle if those two scenes were in the same movie.

I think another reason why the Ozdust Ballroom scene hits as hard as it does (besides the incredible acting) is the genre the story is taking place in.
This is a musical. It's normal for people to break into songs that somehow everyone around knows the lyrics and choreography for.
But Elphaba doesn't really get to enjoy the privilege of the genre she is in. Not at first at least.
"The wizard and I" has her dancing and singing all by herself. The few people who see her just run away.
"What is this feeling?" is a duet between her and Glinda where once again she's kinda on her own, everyone already deciding that "dear Galinda you're just too good".
When Fiyero starts a whole song and dance in the library no one bats an eye. Everyone was on board with the idea of just "Dancing through life".
And there comes the Ozdust Ballroom scene. Elphaba starts to dance -- in a club of all places, where dancing is normal -- and everyone just stares at her like she's the weird one.
So Glinda joining in and following along to Elphaba's dance, without taking over like in "What is this feeling?", showing her that she is no longer alone, is definitely a gut puncher.

Ozdust Duet
Galinda learns that she was allowed in Morrible's sorcery seminar at Elphaba's request. Feeling ashamed for mistreating her, Glinda dances with Elphaba in front of everyone.

This might be a hot take but the music in the Wicked movie is better than the music on the movie soundtrack. They removed the percussion of the stomping and book banging from What Is This Feeling? (insane choice) and often the speaking parts mixed into the rest of the song sound like they’re coming through a tin can. They’re not loud enough.
Also, the bonus track “Ozdust Duet” is the most romantic fucking shit I’ve ever heard.

Don't think about how the Ozdust Duet is actually foreshadowing...
Elphaba tries to do something good (dancing) and it comes off as chaotic and threatening, even though it's just self-defense (from social humiliation).
Galinda steps in and moves with her and, though skeptical at first, eventually the masses warm up to the dance and join in because now someone they admire is validating it.
Don't think about how that's actually foreshadowing how Glinda takes up Elphaba's cause and actually does some good for it in the end.
