I. Bad Blood

Kerem Ozak arregaçou as mangas da camisa como se se preparasse para uma briga. De certo modo, estava mesmo entrando em uma. Olhou especulativamente para Frans, seu supervisor, com uma pergunta nos olhos. Não podia estar falando sério, podia?

“A missão, como você mesmo apontou ao designá-la a mim, já será uma tarefa delicada e complexa sem a adição de um elemento que exige acompanhamento cuidadoso”,disparou antes que pudesse segurar a língua.

“Vejo que tem objeções”, disparou o outro, com a voz inalterada e expressão cautelosa. Habituara-se aos rompantes de Kerem há muito tempo, tempo o bastante para não se deixar levar pela voz áspera e olhar duro. “Mas o assunto não foi trazido para debate, Ozak. Está decidido. Ela vai com você”. 

Kerem ficou em pé num movimento lento e contido, apoiou as mãos na mesa e seu corpo se inclinou na direção do superior, vasculhando brechas em seu rosto que pudessem jogar a seu favor. Uma oscilação que fosse. Não havia nada. 

Os músculos sob a camisa estremecerem com a força que fazia para manter a postura de descaso, muito embora seu rosto estivesse tomado por descontentamento. Tamborilou os dedos sobre o dossiê e agitou a cabeça, incrédulo. 

Não conhecia Aksoy, embora os rumores sobre suas habilidades já tivessem chegado até ele. Havia, no entanto, uma diferença em apresentar resultados brilhantes em missões pequenas e estar preparada para uma tarefa daquele porte. Podia parecer arrogante — e seria estupidez afirmar o contrário — mas não queria, não podia, condicionar o sucesso de seu trabalho a uma aprendiz, por melhor que ela pudesse ser um dia. 

Tinha aprendido a trabalhar sozinho, era bom trabalhando sozinho. Ter outra pessoa com quem se preocupar implicava em redefinir todas as suas prioridades.

“Eu não vou ser babá de uma agente despreparada, é imprudente…”, as palavras saíram bruscamente, um tom acima de seu habitual, mas a visão do canto do olho o fez se interromper. Kerem suspirou, a respiração um pouco irregular e se endireitou. Cruzou os braços observando-a parada na porta. Ótimo, pensou. A julgar por sua expressão, ela tinha escutado.

“Para uma agente, você não se disfarça muito bem”, ele resmungou, e recebeu um olhar de aviso de Frans em resposta. 

Ergueu as sobrancelhas, quase se dando por vencido. Ela ainda podia desistir da ideia.
