REVIEW: Braking Day by Adam Oyebanji
Braking Day by Adam Oyebanji is the sort of science fiction that keeps readers on their toes throughout. Set on a generation ship on the way to what is intended to be salvation, the story is centred around the titular Braking Day. This is the mid-point in the journey, where the ship starts slowing down rather than accelerating in preparation for their destination. But in this case, this is where things go wrong. Set around a young engineer, it is a fast-paced story, blending classic space opera with elements of a psychological thriller and playing with both the reader and the characters’ minds, creating a strong sense of the uncanny.
Ravinder MacLeod is in the middle of this story. He knows Braking Day means there is no going back – once the brakes are on, for better or worse, their course is set. This is a source of anxiety for him, as he quite liked his status quo, where he was able to ignore some of his personal anxieties. But now shit’s getting real, and as the story progresses, Ravi is torn between his role as an engineer within the Archimedes’ officer corps and his humble origins – especially his cousin Boz, who may be brilliant and ambitiously creative in her own experiments, but also an ex-con. I especially liked Boz, with her no-nonsense attitude and inventiveness, but Ravi himself was a great character as well.
The world building in Braking Day was stellar. Not only did the generation ship Archimedes feel like a community and a world with distinct cultures, but each of the ships that Ravi encounters along the story does too. There are clear remnants of Earth culture that have survived through the generations – the Archimedes has been on its journey for over 130 years – but also elements that have developed out of that contained environment into something truly its own. And I thought it was brilliant how different each of the ships was, which really helped my sense of immersion. Oh, and there are space dragons. Of a sort. So that’s absolutely awesome!
In Braking Day, Adam Oyebanji manages to write a strong debut. The reader, along with Ravi, is unsure about which parts are real and which aren’t as events unfold. It is a fast-paced, but still character driven story, full of action and compelling twists. Oyebanji is definitely an author to watch – his next book will be a spy thriller, so a very different genre – and I am very curious to see where his writing career takes him. I’m a fan.

Braking Day, par Adam Oyebanji (DAW, avril 2022)
Tumblr media

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
Ravi is an engineer-in-training on the Archimedes and, it’s Braking Day. The ship is a generational ship, and, so, it’s going to take a year to break so that they don’t slam into the planet orbiting Tau Ceti. Ravi is about to be the first one in his family to become an officer on the ship, but, then, he starts seeing visions of a girl outside of the ship without a helmet. So, will he try and help the floating girl in his vision, or go for the officer-ship and secure his family’s place on the ship.
I love Star Trek and other Sci Fi books and serieses where faster than light travel is available and so the characters can hop around space, but, I also have a soft spot for the books and media that remember that right at the moment (and maybe ever) we can’t actually do that. And, so, in real life we would need something like generation ships to get across the vast spaces of space and also, we would need to brake for more than just the time it takes for the sparkles to explode on screen.
It was Science Fiction with a side of most definite Thriller in it too. Such a fun read.

Governor Oyebanji To Flag Off Construction Of Ekiti Ring Road Phase I
GOVERNOR OYEBANJI TO FLAG OFF CONSTRUCTION OF EKITI RING ROAD PHASE I ON FRIDAY Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji will on Friday 24th November, 2023, officially flag off construction of the new Ekiti Ring Road Phase I at Iworoko Ekiti following the recent State Executive Council’s approval for the variation of rates on the construction and immediate commencement of work on the road. According to a statement from the office of the State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Sola Adebayo, members of State House of Assembly, State Executive Council members, Traditional Rulers, Accounting Officers of Government’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Religion Leaders, Opinion Leaders, Iyalajes and Iyalojas as well as stakeholders in the public transportation sectors are expected to grace the epoch making event. Mr. Adebayo recalled that the road which starts from Iworoko Ekiti through Are, Afao, Araromi Obo, Ekiti Cargo Airport and terminates at Aso Ayegunle, Ijan road, was first awarded in November, 2020, adding that the execution of the project was however stalled by the outbreak of COVID-19 around the period the contract was awarded. Mr. Adebayo explained further that by the time the effects of the virus subsided, the prices of construction materials had gone up astronomically due to volatility in foreign exchange rates, double-digit inflation and fluctuation in market price indices. Describing the road as a top priority to the State Government, Adebayo noted that it would serve the cargo airport and the Ekiti Knowledge Zone adding that it would also considerably decongest traffic in Ado metropolis as well as produce a lot of other socio-economic benefits for residents and the State in general. He described the landmark event as a manifestation of the commitment of the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji to the rapid development of the Stat, adding that it would not only attract investors but would also make the environment a better place for residents. He enjoined guests to be seated by 9.15am https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02rMmH22BmQvvBHeUQhyiSS4DS5mdBM1HmWtocwoDqnq6Yu1tQDUEVPsTLSfHXaVNsl&id=100069437032705&mibextid=Nif5oz Read the full article

Sanwo-Olu commissions Oyingbo bridge, promises more projects
Tumblr media
Sanwo-Olu commissions Oyingbo bridge, and promises more projects. The Oyingbo Bridge was officially opened on Sunday by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State. This was announced by Sanwo-Olu on X, formerly Twitter. The Oyingbo Bridge's commissioning today marks a critical milestone in the development and launch of the Red Line Rail project, the author said. I would want to express my gratitude to H.E. Biodun Oyebanji, the governor of Ekiti state, for joining me at the commissioning today."Not only does the Oyingbo Bridge improve traffic flow, but it also enhances safety by separating vehicular/pedestrian traffic from rail traffic, reducing accidents at the railway." This bridge connects Murtala Muhammed Way to Apapa Road, providing access to Costain, Iganmu Industrial Area, Lagos Badagry Expressway, Herbert Macaulay Way, Third Mainland Bridge, Otto, Carter Bridge, and Ijora. The governor also gave locals the assurance that His administration claims that the projects it has launched are only the beginning and is committed to keeping the state progressing. "A surge of finished projects and initiatives that demonstrate our dedication to enhancing the lives of Lagosians will be unveiled in the last two months of the year," he pledged.
