first & loss for mal :>

First: Has your OC ever been the one to leave first? Why did they go, and who did they leave behind? Do they regret it?

Besides her parents, Mal would always be the first one to leave. They weren't even lovers or friends whom she'd abandon, they'd be would-be-friends instead. Before the events of the game, there were a select few (hi, Afhiri!) who tried to befriend Maleane, but most of the attempts would end up with the drow disappearing into the woods.

I haven't finished the game yet, but part of me feels like after everything unfolds, it wouldn't be at all surprising if Mal left everyone again. Just to process everything that happened. Unless there's someone that stops her and convinces her to stay.

Loss: Is there anyone important to your OC who has passed away? How did they handle the loss?

She is not entirely sure if her father is dead, but she chooses to believe so. When Lathorien first departed, Mal cried for a whole day, thinking that she'd done something wrong and he didn't want to be with them anymore (a notion that her mother made no effort to dismiss). Then, she'd spend months waiting and waiting and waiting for him to return, at times venturing out of the forest, peeking in between the trees, at any road she'd find. Unfortunately, he never came back. She was barely twelve when he'd left, so eventually time patched that hole in her heart up, or at the very least stuffed it full of other things that made it hurt less.

A little more than a decade later, Maleane's mother was murdered and her death left a gaping wound not only in her heart, but also her psyche. Not only was listening to her mother's screams and groans of pain for days extremely traumatic, by the end of it Mal had to face the fact that she was utterly alone. She had no more family to turn to, no community, no friends. It was devastating. But in a weird twist of fate, it was also the reason for her to finally break free and start venturing into the world, even if it was all baby steps. I don't think Mal was able to completely process it and move on, she just sort of compartmentalized it for the sake of survival.

Name:

afhiri, but if performing will tell people their name is gift ^_^ afhiri does have a surname i just haven't decided what it is yet because it's almost better to me if no one ever finds out. even me candor's actual name is raguel, but chose the virtue name candor for itself! this was with intent for when it introduced itself to afhiri, but it completely failed when he realised afhiri doesn't know what candour means :D cirok is a name that they picked themselves after his failed transformation into a kaorti and became a rivener! it's actual name is long lost, and no one will ever learn it

Nickname(s):

afhiri has the nicknames hiri and iri, and various pet names from their various partners. "sweet clown" and "my favourite bard" are used often by gale! a fun fact is gale will give afhiri moon and star related names, and candor will give afhiri sun related names! candor is called candy by afhiri, and they'll tease it with lots of "you're so sweet! like candy!" hehehe... the torment melts the heart of even the most honourable of angels cirok is called cir by afhiri but other than that their name doesn't actually get used often, since it only really interacts with afhiri and gale. gale calls cirok "it" a lot, and "phantom", using cirok mostly when afhiri pouts at him. it sounds mean but cirok doesn't mind and sometimes prefers the depersonalisation of it

Gender:

afhiri is intersex and was raised to be a boy from birth, however they developed to look more like a girl, causing a lot of inner turmoil and conflict. afhiri is transfem and nonbinary. they also take testosterone to feel closer to their masculinity. she/they pronouns! candor is quite literally a sexless solar angel, but is maculine in appearence and presentation. calling candor a man in any form would be incorrect. he/it/they pronouns! cirok is nonbinary. don't ask whats under its clothes... vaguely gestures to the fact it's a failed kaorti transformation. it/they with heavy preference for it/its.

this is a little difficult because realms lore has changed on this a lot, if i'm correct in my information. from people being blessed by stars or entire consellations to each month actually having a sign in more recent lore. here is a link anyone doing this for realms ocs (like bg3 ocs) can use to figure this out! the lore on stars and consellations in the realms is spotty at best, but this could be helpful if you wanna go that route!

afhiri is baldurian and from the lower city in a poor district. baby is a tiefling! candor is a solar from the upper planes! candor originally called the chronias layer of mount celestia its home but upon agreeing to serve lathander moved to the realm morninglory in elysium. candor spends a few decades on toril, but eventually returns to morninglory where they stay for eternity cirok is a rivener, and what it was before this is lost to time, and you're not going to get an answer out of them. but if you were able to get a good look, you'd assume cirok is maybe a human or a half elf. cirok stays in waterdeep with afhiri and gale post-game but where cirok was before is anyones guess!

afhiri has multiple partners! time to get complex

afhiri has no partners prior to the events of the game, or any sort of relations at all, including platonic, beyond her family. and a chwinga. anyway

during act 1, in afhiri's canon, karlach and wyll start a relationship together. afhiri joins this relationship as a fwb addition to explore her own sexuality with people she trusts. this situationship doesn't end until (end game spoilers).

afhiri's relationship with gale goes the same way it does in canon, but insert a scene where he gives afhiri the 'i would be so much better for you' better partner assertion trope speech about karlach and wyll, completely misunderstanding afhiri isn't romantically involves with them.

over the course of the game afhiri meets multiple people she has interest in. afhiri's goals, highkey, are to explore her sexuality, what sex is, what it means for her, and the same with romance. this is something she discusses with gale, and he provides his consent to allow afhiri to figure herself out. to gain the consent she needed from gale, she has to have a hieracial polyam situation, meaning gale is the primary partner who comes first.

she gets involved with barcus, omeluum + blurg (who in afhiri's canon are married), and the emperor. she also has 'one night stands' with a few people just to see what it would be like and if she's into what they offer, only starting relationships with those that fit with what she comes to realise she likes.

ok so candor is a solar. which is, going by the highest deva rank, 2 ranks above deva. devas can become solars if they achieve great things and Want to, as angels ascending to higher forms is a choice. the one before solar is planetar. the full Tier List of angels is

i will tell you now picking what candor was took me weeks. i even had different ones on it's oc page. you read through my dms with aisling and null and it's me changing my mind every damn DAY. this also means that's retaining candor lore from when candor was a deva (monadic deva - to be exact). however there is a very key difference between all the angels and solar. solar choose who they serve, and are free to change their mind whenever they want. they are angels with free will.

so in terms of gold!gale, candor would have to deem gale worthy enough to serve. candor currently serves lathander, and has done for thousands of years, because it found lathander to be a god worthy of it. now - would candor leave lathander for gale? absolutely not. would candor without a god choose to server gale? absolutely not.

candor fucking despises gale. candor told afhiri that they should kill gale because he's a danger to them, and to everyone. to the balance of the universe, to the upper planes and everything that exists in this moment. candor has always found gale to be bad ^_^

so.. oh my god. gale is the god of ambition now? an extremely dangerous thing for a god to hold domain over? gale, there was a reason there was no god of ambition.

there's some hints in raphael's new ending (requires him to have been promised the crown, left alone and god gale to happen) which tell us that gale does exactly what i had already had candor assuming - that gale will bring ruin to the heavens.

candor would probably be a leader of an army charging onto gale's doorstep to behead him. ^_^ i love making ocs who oppose everything my favourite character stands for

if we were to consider an au where candor did serve god!gale..... it would not last long, and would end in candor trying to kill gale again.

would candor beat gale on a 1:1 fight? well - a god can only die in it's home plane. and a solar can only die on it's home plane. so already we're at a standstill. if candor invades gale's new plane of ambition, gale can be killed there, but gale also controls everything there so it would be extremely hard. but candor also can't die, but candor's form can be destroyed and candor will have to be reborn - and sometimes when solar's are reborn they do not come back as solars, but as aasimar and lose a great deal of their power - so candor would not want to lose. so fighting gale like this is foolish. so gale needs to be weakened. that would require a loss of followers, most likely all of them unfortunately - which could be doable if you find a way to cut off their ability to pray - but it would also take a lot of time for a god to become weak enough for what we want. so.. we have a new idea. god!gale tells us the crown of karsus is protected with all his power in his plane. if one were to get the crown and destroy it, gale would lose his godhood.. immediately. the karsus weave would be destroyed. yadada. so the real plan here would be to keep the lad distracted while other people go for the crown. so can candor beat gale in a 1:1? no, candor would need friends. but candor would also not die. ^_^

so unfortunately it would not happen. gale would need to manipulate and control candor to keep it, which is something i don't want god!gale to become. despite how clearly terrible god!gale is for everything...... but i do have a way we can make this work

afhiri ^_^ in my 3 years later fic afhiri and gale ascend together. they do it a completely different way without the crown. we're not getting into that rn. anyway

afhiri and gale would obviously serve together in the same way god!gale ends, separate gods with their own domains but they are very clearly still together, and gale would help you settle into becoming a god.

while candor would absolutely still be incredibly murderous over god!gale even if afhiri has ascended, it does put a spanner in the works. and actually becomes incredibly painful. so i've never thought past the ascension in my fic, it ends dead there and what happens next is anyones guess. ascending is the end of their story. but if we are thinking of the actual new epilogue, 6 months later not my 3 years later - what would candor do once this happens? i would assume the entire time gale has been a god candor has been campaigning to get people to side with it to go kill gale. but now afhiri has ascended?

see i can see candor serving afhiri. very easily in fact. afhiri would not send ripples across the heavens and bring ruin with something like Ambition, gods no. but can i see candor being essentially neutralised by afhiri to not kill gale? it was already neutralised once before the ascension, and candor is probably feeling a large amount of regret for not killing gale while he was mortal. i honestly don't know.

see raphael's ending does not change if you ascend too. it still talks like you haven't ascended. raph talks about after you have died all this shit will happen - so talking like you're a mortal who will die of old age. raph's ending doesn't take you into account! so completely ignoring it/adding a romance portion - could you stop gale from bringing ruin?

if you could stop gale from bringing ruin.. candor could be passified. if you couldn't? well. candor is leading the army to gale's doorstep and it will be one hell of a war ^_^

my oc dru kind of got cannibalised by rue but still exists.. cuz dru's intended path literally doesn't work because i made her before i finished the game and the ending doesn't allow her to exist and it would have to be rewritten by me so much that i just don't have the energy so dru just lives in my lil au "what i wish the ending allowed" space in my brain <3 i'm not gonna share a picture because this also allows me to have her exist outside of the games limitations so no picture <3 she's so much cooler than the cc allows <3 dru is a high elf who is delusional and thinks shes actually a fey eladrin and is very uncomfortable to be around because shes just insane. completely isolated from society and the world and would have the hermit background if they didnt remove it .. larian literally didnt want her to exist.

unfortunately due to my pc death i no longer have asuras cc stuff so she will need to be remade but... this is asura shes literally terrible. shes my unfortunately extremely power hungry character who will accept every single option to make her stronger. she fucks mindflayers. and minthara. and she and minthara will rule the entire world together as tyrant wives and maybe they ascend. true love stuff. asura won't live until i'm confident minthara isn't a broken fucking mess . i think playing asura will make me worse. shes like how people play bhaalist durges who love their daddy but shes not the durge. shes just a bad person

THIS IS TAV. yeah his name is tav. they're just a tav man idk. this is my first character from full release tav is an ancients paladin whose entire vibe is "you don't quite suite your oath" and that's fun. they are the most lawful good boring ass motherfucker you ever met and literally my favourite type of character. he's all about Justice and Order and Goodness and Sacrificing Your Happiness For The Greater Good. that kind of annoying paladin! <3 tav never got to finish the game because my pc died and killed them. oh and tav has a twin who dedicated their life to annoying tav because .. like. lawful good paladin? DESERVES to be annoyed

which is really funny because the twin is my EA character! also tav! see the thing is. paladin tav is actually tav. but this monster? tav isn't their name. but they go by tav. just so they can hopefully fuck with their twins reputation. doing terrible things in their lawful good twins name!!! i still can't decide if i want twin tav to work with the guide and kiss nine-fingers keenne or work with the zhentharim and kiss rugan. or maybe they're a double agent and kiss both. idk!!! twin tav has literally no moral compass and just does shit for money mostly. and to make their twins life hell <3

and lastly i have this dude who doesn't have a place on my oc page because he doesn't have a name or nothing like. he's completely blank beyond i KNOW he's something to do with afhiri. so fun fact afhiri's lore was leading towards this dude being some sort of outer planes entity, either a god (dead star) or the herald of such, and baited afhiri through a portal as part of her destiny. this is how she gains her wild magic. BUT this was scrapped for what ended up happening (afhiri befriends a chwinga. cuteness ensues). HE STILL EXISTS IN AFHIRIS LORE SOMEWHERE - HE IS LITERALLY A COMPANION IN HER PARTY - when my pc stops crashing every time i play bg3 he's going to be on my blog a lot because im gonna use fancy editing to make him a companion and shove him in cutscenes. afhiri and he will kiss btw. i definitely don't want him to be actually a tiefling though this is just a form he uses to walk faerun and not to cause any ruckus... and to make afhiri feel ease around him <3 ALSO HES NOT ACTUALLY AFHIRIS GUARDIAN... u will see who is when my pc stops dying <3

a huge portion of afhiri's story across the game is exploring their sexuality and sex. you can see where this is going!!!!!!!!!

afhiri's main attraction to gale is his magic, afhiri thinks magic is COOL and PRETTY and it's AWESOME!!!!!!!!! elminster is a level 29 wizard. the magic that old man can show her. seduction? EASY. if elminster wanted afhiri as partner? DONE, EASY. that wizard could have stolen afhiri away so easily if he wanted to................

i've been writing afhiri x gale for a couple days now without any real breaks. nothing that i can share mostly writing alternative ways to handle storybeats i know i want. and i just came to the conclusion that i keep making afhiri more childish and more feral. i'm adding to her impulsiveness and unpredictability and giving them more energy. and i realised something about that!

afhiri was forced to grow up when she was very young, she was a child caring for other children like a parent. they had to repress herself to be what they had to be for her siblings, so when she moves out she quickly starts regressing to the child self they never got to be. so the afhiri that everyone knows throughout the game is a young adult acting much like a child would, rejecting responsibility, not caring about the severity of things, to the point she just doesn't understand what's going on, acting foolishly and recklessly, endangering themselves at every turn. the "afhiri toddler harness" joke is painfully not a joke because leaving them to their own devices is dangerous. i literally created an oc (candor uwu) to go with afhiri in order to make some realistic way for her to survive the year between leaving her home and adventuring to the events of the game because i just sat there like. huh. afhiri would fucking die if they didn't have someone to keep them alive.

lets look at afhiri's primary traits for a sec ignoring how gendered some of these are

the fool

cuckoosnarker

magical clown

plucky comic relief

let's also think about the fact afhiri is a manic pixie dream girl for a second

and at the character inspiration sheet i made for them!

this isn't an emotionally mature character who can look after themselves - with intent by afhiri themselves. afhiri doesn't want to look after people anymore, they don't want to be relied on, they don't want responsibility. afhiri is rejecting everything they were forced to be. afhiri wants to have fun, kill rich people and be free to do whatever the hell they want. afhiri only wants independence and the ability to choose who they are.

now think about this type of character in a romantic relationship. this can only really go a few ways.

it's completely lighthearted and fun and it survives on the fact that nothing is asked of afhiri beyond having a good time. this is the basis of many afhiri relationships! its all good fun

it crashes and burns because the other party asks afhiri to grow up - to emotionally mature - to be responsible - to be an adult - to act her age. this isn't going to work, afhiri will feel threatened by this, reject it and reject them. not because afhiri will never do that again, but because it feels like an attack on their freedom, their independence, their ability to choose for themselves. it feels forced on them - so they run

lastly - it's being with someone who will take all the adult responsibly requires of them both on their own. someone who enjoys afhiri being how she is and doesn't want that to change, and is fully willing to look after her in the way she requires in order to stay as she is. inherently this will have a power imbalance, and afhiri will have complete dependency on them whether they realise it or not.

you can totally theorise where afhiri's various partners fit on this, most of them are in the first bullet point because afhiri doesn't exactly invite getting into a serious relationship with them. it has to be the other party who seeks that and makes it happen - and does it all in a way that afhiri doesn't feel threatened - avoiding the second bulletpoint.

gale is the final bulletpoint for afhiri. their entire relationship is built on the basis that he looks after her. he likes how feral she is, how reckless she can be, how fun and full of life she is, the never ending energy and the childlike innocence she displays. he likes how blunt they are and how they do whatever they want without thinking for even a second on if it's a good idea. it keeps him young and fit, he finds it amusing and charming. and he's perfectly happy to take care of them, cook for them, clean up after them, wash their clothes, stop them from attacking that guard in the middle of the street because he exists and afhiri hates that (acab afhiri real). and it also requires gale to let her go when she needs it. it takes afhiri years to move in with him and years to marry him, afhiri spends several months a year not in contact with him because she goes off adventuring all on her own, sometimes she even forgets to say something. being with afhiri isn't exactly easy, but they make it work... because gale is willing to make it work. afhiri is just vibing man.

past & future for dear afhiri !!!

Past: Does your OC have any past partners? How did the relationship(s) end? Are any of their exes still in their life, and if so, do they get along?

no! :D one of my absolute favourite things about afhiri is their discovery of sex and romance through the events of the game. afhiri grew up raising their many siblings, didn't go to school, had no friends, was considered the weirdo tiefling.. there was no opportunity for afhiri to have a first love let alone actual partners. afhiri is immensely inexperienced at the start of the game, and hasn't even explored their sexual indentity in the most basic of senses.

it's through interacting with the companions, and several npcs, that afhiri learns about romance and sex, what her preferences are, what she is attracted to.. what it means to find attraction in another, what a crush is.

in afhiri's canon karlach and wyll start a romantic relationship with each other, and afhiri is the closest to them both. afhiri begins a situationship with them both. this actually sparks afhiri's own first and proper romantic relationship with gale, who gives her the old 'i would be so much better for you' speech, completely misunderstanding that afhiri is essentially fwb with karlach + wyll, not in a relationship with them... dkfgdgjd

Future: Is there anyone your OC is looking forward to meeting or to seeing again? Who? What might that meeting or reunion look like?

afhiri is very chill during the whole events of the game, not even viewing certain life or death situations with the respect and urgency they deserve. but if there is one thing throughout the game that gives them any measure of anxiety - it's concern for their family in baldur's gate. it is only upon learning the absolute army is marching on baldur's gate that brings afhiri to the reality of the situation they're under.

when they meet with their family again in act 3, her mother has given birth to another kid T_T afhiri missed the birth of a sibling!! this has never happened before!!! afhiri didn't even know their mother was pregnant! they get over it pretty quick, but missing so much and not being there for their family hits like a brick.

i've just come out of a decently long relationship that wasn't healthy, in fact i came out of it very shortly before bg3 released. throughout that relationship i was too exhausted and drained to.. really care about much for more than a day. i felt like i was broken and my ability to find new special interests (autistic style) was just gone, and i couldn't love my existing ones anymore either.

bg3 is the first thing i've really cared about in awhile, i cared about it enough to start posting on tumblr again, to make gifs and to write for the first time in a decade! and it wouldn't have happened without gale, specifically. i didn't really post about my first tav, i didn't post about other characters, it was my need to see and consume more gale that.. has me here on tumblr right now.

and honestly - afhiri became so important to me because i really enjoyed their dynamic with gale. afhiri wouldn't be afhiri if it wasn't for gale!!! so . like

i don't think gale changed me so much as gale came into my life at just the right time to help me feel alive again and want to have friends again and be around people again. to be in a community and have a shared interest with lots of people. sometimes it gets overwhelming and i wish i was alone again, self isolating again, but then i see a new fat gale fanart and i'm fixed

ive also allowed afhiri to be an npc in a homebrew campaign which made me SOO HAPPYYY i coulda cried
