Rivers State Crisis - Lesson from History by Osita Chidoka
On 20 May 1962, sixty-eight members of the Western Regional Assembly signed a No Confidence resolution on Chief SL Akintola as the Premier of the Western Region. They forwarded the resolution to the Governor of Western Region, Sir Adesoji Aderemi.
On 22 May 1962, the Governor, Sir Aderemi, the Ooni of Ife, wrote to Chief SL Akintola and informed him of his removal from office as Premier of the Western Region. Chief Akintola called a press conference and announced his rejection of the removal. He also filed an action in court for injunction against his removal. The Action Group, in the exercise of their right as the majority party, elected Alhaji DS Adegbenro as the new Premier of the Western Region. He was sworn in and duly recognized by the Governor.
23 May 1962, Chief SL Akintola broke into the Premier's office, which was locked, and insisted he was still the Premier. The High Court at Ibadan heard Chief Akintola's case and adjourned to 5 June 1962. The injunction was not granted.
By 24 May 1962, in a rare act of interference and for different reasons, the Premiers of the Eastern and Northern Regions took public sides against Alhaji Adegbenro, thereby supporting Chief Akintola.
25 May 1962, the Western Regional House convened for a confidence motion on Alhaji Adegbenro. A member of the Parliament stood up shouting there "is fire on the mountain" while another member took the mace and broke it. Pandemonium ensued. The House reconvened later in the day, and for some inexplicable reason, police fired teargas into the room and caused commotion. Prime Minister made a broadcast and announced a meeting of the Federal House on 29 May 1962.
29 May 1962, the Federal House met, and the Prime Minister moved a motion to declare a State of Emergency in the Western Region, citing the absence of a duly constituted government as the reason. The Minister of Finance seconded. Chief Awolowo sought an amendment to the motion opposing the state of emergency. He was defeated. The Prime Minister's motion passed with 209 in support and 36 against. The federal government declared a State of Emergency in the Western Region. Dr MA Majekodunmi was appointed Administrator of the region.
The 29 May 1962 incident indeed marked the beginning of the end of the First Republic. Due to a lack of attention and record keeping, we made 29 May Democracy Day without considering that day's event in 1962. That event gathered speed that led to the coup of January 1966, the counter-coup of July 1966, and the civil war. The Federal interference in the Western Regional House of Assembly crisis was needless, politically motivated, and unnecessary. Subsequent court judgment by the Privy Council in Adengbero and Akintola found that the Governor of Western Region's removal of Chief Akintola was constitutional. Some patience and regard for due process would have allowed the issue to be resolved legally. That would have deepened our democracy and avoided the ugly consequences that followed.
Federal interference in the Rivers state "crisis," in my opinion, is needless, unnecessary, and can cause grave harm to constitutional government. There is a need for all to act with restraint and follow the due process of the law. Abridging the law is a recipe for more crisis. History is available to help us avert needless crises.
The sequence of events account was drawn from two opposing sources, one by Chief Awolowo in his book The Travails of Democracy and the other from Ayo Rosiji Man with Vision by Nina Mba. #highlight @Everyone.

By • Olalekan Fagbade PDP leaders, bigwigs shun Atiku’s media conference In what appeared a crack in their ranks, prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not attend Thursday’s world press conference called by the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Not a single member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), including the PDP Acting National Chairman, Amb Umar Damagum attended the event. Also, none of the party’s 13 serving governors or its members in the two chambers of the National Assembly showed up. Explaining his absence at the event, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said he was not around at the time of the event. When asked why other members of the NWC did not attend, Ologunagba who spoke on the telephone, said he was not in the position to speak for other members. The PDP chairman, Damagum, was yet to react to the development as of the time of filing this report. Curiously, none of the NWC members showed up in their offices at the party’s national secretariat. Among those who were expected at the event but who did not show up was the PDP vice presidential candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. A few PDP chieftains who attended the conference included the suspended PDP national chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, and a former chairman, Prince Uche Secondus. Others were a former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi; a former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka; a former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa; a former PDP National Secretary, Senator Ben Obi; and a former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki who walked in at the close of the event. #bigwigsshunAtikusmediaconference #PDPleaders

S’East Govs, lawmakers, Ohanaeze Ndigbo to meet Tinubu over insecurity
Governors and lawmakers from the South East as well as the Igbo sociocultural organization, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo have resolved to send a delegation to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in stemming the tide of insecurity in the zone. The stakeholders took the decision after an emergency meeting held on Monday evening at the Imo state Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. Imo state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma who hosted the meeting which lasted for over four hours said insecurity remained the greatest challenge facing the region. He said; “We have identified insecurity as the problem of South East for now and it is at the front burner and must be addressed. “The federal government in the past has supported us but we think that the federal government can do more. So among other resolutions, we resolved today to make a representation to the President for his intervention to be able to bring insecurity in the region to an end. So any moment from now, we’ll be putting together an arrangement to visit the president and discuss with him. There are certain things we cannot do very well without the federal government. Security is in the Exclusive List and only the federal government can deploy as appropriate”. On his part, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu said the five governors of the Southeast are working together with lawmakers from the zone to find lasting solution to challenges facing the people. He said; “Frankly speaking, I am not going to give you the details of what we want to do. The problem of insecurity is one that cannot be solved by the Southeast governors alone. We have resolved that the leadership of Ohanaeze, the governors and lawmakers to get in touch with the President. The problem in South East is too much, is too big for the governors alone. It is a Nigerian problem and the president will give support to the governors”. Speaking to journalists, the immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said; “the new President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and members of his cabinet came to meet with us, the governors, National Assembly members, former ministers and stakeholders in the Southeast. “In the main, we were discussing the issue of security of our region. Security and the economy. It is the first maiden visit and we have taken some important resolutions.” Also, a source privy to the meeting told Vanguard that the issues bordering on sit-at-home, the continuous incarceration of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the self-styled Biafra Prime Minister, Simon Ekpa were discussed. According to the source, it was agreed that a delegation will be sent to President Tinubu in the next two weeks for his intervention. The source said, “The meeting discussed about security in Southeast and everybody agreed that we will now be discussing without political party affiliation in mind and that there is government in place and the government in place should be recognised and supported.” The source further said that “the issue of Nnamdi Kanu was discussed and it was agreed that we should draw up a delegation that will go and see President Bola Tinubu on security situation in the Southeast including Nnamdi Kanu and Simon Ekpa within the next two weeks.” Some members at the meeting led by the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu included the Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma, his Ebonyi State counterpart, Francis Nwifuru and former governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige. Others are former governor Ikedi Ohakim, former Senate President, Pius Anyim, Osita Chidoka, Prof. Maurice Iwu, Senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Sam Egwu, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Darlington Nwokocha, Dave Umahi, Prof. ABC Nwosu, Ambassador Kema Chikwe, Mrs Josephine Anenih, and Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo. Buhari's missed opportunity to stem elite superiority, By Osita Chidoka
Buhari’s missed opportunity to stem elite superiority, By Osita Chidoka
The greatest tragedy of the Buhari administration is in the inability to equalise access for all Nigerians. No Nigerian leader was equipped like President Buhari in 2015 to restore order in Nigeria. He had a solid support base, a party in control of both Houses, and an unparalleled moral authority to redefine Nigeria. Femi Otedola and Aliko Dangote went to a Drivers Licence Centre (DLC) in Lagos…

By • Olalekan Fagbade Nigeria 2023 Election: Only way the South-East can win Presidency – Former Minister opens up A former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka has explained why the South-East lost the 2023 presidential election. Chidoka, who spoke in Umuahia during a live program on FLO 94.9 FM Umuahia, said the only way for the region to win the country's presidency is for the people to engage in political alliance and build a strong coalition with other geopolitical zones. He noted that the present approach being applied by politicians in the zone cannot guarantee a victory for a presidential candidate of South-East extraction. He informed the South Easterners that the South West geopolitical region, which was always in the opposition, realized the need to be in the centre. He explained that such realization by the South West was them appropriating the strategy of alliance with the North, which in return, had made them relevant since the return of democracy in 1999. Chidoka, who recalled how the NCNC/NEPU, NCNC/NPC and NPN/NPP accords saw the South East playing important political leadership roles in the past, advised his kinsmen to revisit the approach for their own benefit. He made it clear that no zone can achieve the task of producing the President of the country just by counting only on votes or key candidates from her area, as obtained in the South East during the presidential poll. According to the former Minister, votes from the South East are always in bloc for a particular candidate which entails that any perfect alliance struck by the zone with other power blocs could land a man from the East in Aso Rock. He further suggested that the PDP could have won the 2023 Presidency if it zoned the ticket to the South East with a Northerner as the running mate. He pointed out that the South West was fast taking charge of coalition and alliance game plans which put the zone at a better political position. “The South East should return to the coalition and negotiate with other regions to win the Presidency. It is something we can’t go alone, he maintained. On the issues of insecurity, he sympathized with governors in the South East, saying that the failure in security architecture across the country has worsened the South-East case. He therefore advised the governors to regularly and properly utilize security votes.

Ekweremadu: UK Police, EFCC scuttled bail process – HURIWA
The Human Rights Writers Association, HURIWA, on Monday said Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s alleged organ harvest case was a bailable offence in UK laws, but his bail was scuttled based on a letter instigated by the UK Metropolitan Police. The group in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko on Monday which was obtained by DAILY POST in Abuja, explained that the UK Police instigated a letter using Nigeria’s anti-graft agency which approached Justice Inyang Ekwo Federal High Court and it was affirmed. The statement read: “That the London Metropolitan Police went as far as instigating a letter and court process in Nigeria by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, affirmed were used to scuttle Ekweremadu’s bail applications in the UK.” The development, HURIWA posited was despite the Federal Government’s readiness to serve as a sovereign guarantor for Ekweremadu’s bail. “The UK government put a serving Nigerian Senator, Ike Ekweremadu, through trial without bail in a “clearly bailable offence”. The group tasked the FG to strictly implement Nigeria’s Immigration laws and put any foreign to trial if found breaching the the law. HURIWA submitted that Nigeria citizens have been treacherously treated by the former colonial masters. “This is the same country that denied a serving Nigerian Senator, three-term Deputy Senate President, and former Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament bail in a clearly bailable offence even after the FG submitted a letter to stand as a sovereign guarantor.” “Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, revealed in its January post that another kidney transplant for Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia, scheduled for December 2023 was scuttled by the British system, which must put her through trial, not minding that she undergoes dialysis four times a week. “The UK equally detained the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, recently. “Therefore, no indicted officers of any foreign should be bigger than the Nigerian courts and government.” Read the full article
