Oscar Palmer Robertson (November 24, 1938) nicknamed “The Big O”, is a retired basketball player who played for the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks. He played point guard and was a 12-time All-Star, 11-time member of the All-NBA Team, and one-time winner of the MVP award in 14 seasons. In 1962, he became the first player in NBA history to average a triple-double for a season. In the 1970–71 NBA season, he was a key player on the team that brought the Bucks their only NBA title to date. His playing career, especially during high school and college, was plagued by racism.
He is a two-time Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, having been inducted in 1980 for his career, and in 2010 as a member of the 1960 US men’s Olympic basketball team and president of the National Basketball Players Association. He was voted one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. The US Basketball Writers Association renamed their College Player of the Year Award the Oscar Robertson Trophy in his honor in 1998, and he was one of five people chosen to represent the inaugural National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame class in 2006. He was ranked as the 36th best American athlete of the 20th century by ESPN.
He was an integral part of Robertson v. National Basketball Ass’n of 1970. The landmark NBA antitrust suit, which was filed when he was the president of the NBA Players’ Association, led to an extensive reform of the league’s strict free agency and draft rules and higher salaries for all players. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #kappaalphapsi

Oscar Robertson was in my opinion the best Rookie of all-time. Even better from Wilt Chamberlain's (37.6 points, 27 rebounds, 2,3 assists) Rookie season.
Oscar after the University of Cincinnati was then taken by the Cincinnati Royals with the first overall pick in the 1960 draft.
He would go on to average 30.5 points, 10 rebounds and 9.7 assists per game.
Almost triple-double stats. Big O won Rookie of the Year helping add 14 wins to the Royals win total and was also named the All-Star Game MVP as a rookie, nearly notching a triple-double.

Basketball is a thrilling sport that involves skill, strategy, and teamwork. Amidst the countless statistics basketball enthusiasts analyze, the term "triple-double" holds a special place. A triple-double is a statistical achievement that signifies an exceptional all-around performance by a player. This article will explore the concept of a triple-double in basketball, its historical significance, notable records, strategies to achieve one, controversies surrounding it, and its impact on the game. Introduction Basketball is more than just scoring points; it encompasses various aspects such as rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. A triple-double occurs when a player reaches double-digit figures in three statistical categories during a single game. It is a testament to the player's versatility and contribution across multiple facets of the game. Understanding Triple Double To fully comprehend the significance of a triple-double, we must delve into its components. The three statistical categories typically associated with a triple-double are points, rebounds, and assists. However, other categories, such as steals and blocks, can also contribute to achieving this milestone. The Components of a Triple Double Let's explore the components of a triple-double in more detail: Points Points are the most familiar and celebrated statistic in basketball. It represents the number of times a player successfully scores by shooting the ball into the opposing team's basket. A player must score at least ten points to contribute significantly to a triple-double. Rebounds Rebounds measure a player's ability to retrieve missed shots from both teams. They are categorized into offensive rebounds (grabbing missed shots from their team) and defensive rebounds (securing cut images from the opposing team). Accumulating ten or more rebounds is crucial for achieving a triple-double. Assists Assists reflect players' ability to create scoring opportunities for their teammates by passing the ball. Recording ten or more assists demonstrates exceptional court vision, playmaking skills, and selflessness. Steals and Blocks While points, rebounds, and assists are the primary categories, contributing to a triple-double, steals (taking the ball away from opponents), and blocks (defensive actions to prevent shot attempts) can also elevate a player's performance. Historical Significance The concept of the triple-double has been ingrained in basketball history for decades. It has become a benchmark of excellence, showcasing a player's impact beyond scoring. The first recorded triple-double in NBA history occurred in 1960, achieved by the legendary Oscar Robertson, known for his exceptional skills and versatility. Triple Double Records Over the years, numerous players have etched their names in basketball lore by amassing impressive triple-double records. From Russell Westbrook's relentless pursuit of triple-doubles to Magic Johnson's showmanship, these records highlight the greatness of individual players and their contributions to their teams. Notable Triple Double Performances Some triple-double performances have transcended statistical achievements and become legendary in basketball history. From Wilt Chamberlain's 22-point, 25-rebound, and 21-assist masterpiece to Russell Westbrook's record-breaking 20-20-20 performance, these extraordinary feats leave an indelible mark on the sport. Impact on the Game The triple-double has had a profound impact on the game of basketball. It has elevated the status of players who consistently achieve this feat, enhancing their marketability and legacy. Pursuing triple-doubles has also transformed how players approach the game, emphasizing versatility, teamwork, and individual statistical accomplishments. Strategies to Achieve a Triple Double While triple-doubles are rare, some players excel at accumulating statistics across multiple categories. Understanding
the game, having exceptional court vision, and being actively involved in all facets of play are essential strategies for players aspiring to achieve a triple-double. Criticisms and Controversies Despite its popularity, the concept of the triple-double has faced criticism and controversies. Some argue it emphasizes individual achievements over team success, leading to stat-padding and selfish play. However, proponents maintain that triple-doubles reflect a player's ability to impact the game holistically. Triple Double in Other Sports Although triple-doubles are most commonly associated with basketball, similar statistical achievements exist in other sports. Athletes in various disciplines have versions of the triple-double, from hockey to cricket, highlighting their all-around skills and contributions. Triple Double in Pop Culture The allure of the triple-double has transcended the realm of sports and made its way into pop culture. From references in music lyrics to appearances in movies and TV shows, the term has become a symbol of excellence and versatility, resonating with a broader audience beyond basketball enthusiasts. Triple Double and Player Legacies Pursuing triple-doubles has become a defining characteristic of certain players' careers. Achieving this milestone repeatedly elevates a player's status and legacy, solidifying their place among the all-time greats. The correlation between triple-doubles and player legacies adds another layer of intrigue to the concept. Triple Double and Statistical Analysis The advent of advanced statistical analysis in basketball has shed new light on the value of triple-doubles. Analysts examine the impact of these performances on team success, player efficiency, and overall game outcomes. This statistical lens offers a deeper understanding of the significance and implications of triple-doubles. Triple Double as a Barometer of Excellence The triple-double has become a barometer of individual excellence in basketball. It signifies a player's ability to contribute in multiple areas, showcasing their versatility and all-around skills. Fans and analysts alike appreciate the rareness and brilliance of this statistical achievement. Conclusion In conclusion, a triple-double in basketball represents an extraordinary all-around performance by a player. It signifies their ability to excel in scoring, rebounding, assisting, and other vital statistical categories. The concept of a triple-double has left an indelible mark on the sport, transforming how players are evaluated and their legacies are shaped. Whether viewed as a measure of individual brilliance or a reflection of team impact, the triple-double captivates basketball fans worldwide. FAQs How often do triple-doubles occur in basketball? Triple-doubles are relatively rare occurrences, happening sporadically throughout the basketball season. They require an exceptional level of skill and versatility from the player. Can a triple-double guarantee a team's victory? While a triple-double reflects an impressive individual performance, it does not guarantee a team's victory. Team success depends on various factors, including the contributions of all players and the overall game strategy. Who holds the record for the most triple-doubles in NBA history? As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Russell Westbrook holds the record for the most triple-doubles in NBA history, surpassing the previous record set by Oscar Robertson. Are triple-doubles recognized in other basketball leagues around the world? Yes, the concept of the triple-double is recognized and celebrated in various basketball leagues worldwide, although the specific statistical categories may vary slightly. Can any player achieve a triple-double, or is it limited to specific positions? While players of any position can achieve triple-doubles, they are more commonly associated with guards and forwards who have the versatility to contribute to scoring, rebounding, and playmaking.

"Monday night, a photo of Jokic in a Denver Nuggets sweatshirt when he was about 5 years old went viral on social media after it was shared on Instagram by Serbian agent Misko Raznatovic.
"Back in 2000, when this photo was taken, he is wearing a Nuggets sweatshirt -- not because he loved basketball or even knew about the Nuggets -- but because he got it as a present. Chances of a kid from a small Serbian town having a sweatshirt from a lesser-known American team back in 2000 were minimal," Raznatovic wrote. "But chances of that same kid growing up to play basketball and achieve his career high, win two MVP titles and sign a historic agreement with the same club whose sweatshirt he wore at age 5, were -- zero."

Oscar Robertson's impact on the league is undeniable, and his legacy deserves recognition. Despite his incredible accomplishments, such as averaging a triple-double for an entire season, Robertson often doesn't receive the credit he deserves. In my opinion, he is the greatest point guard in history. At 6'5", Robertson was a pioneer ahead of his time, showcasing his versatility with impressive scoring, playmaking, and rebounding numbers. Throughout his illustrious career, he averaged 25.7 points, 9.5 assists, and 7.5 rebounds per game. His contributions to the game should be acknowledged and celebrated.

Big O
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oscar Robertson aka “The Big O” averaged a triple double for the entire 1961-62 NBA seaon, his sophomore year in the league. The first is his “tall boy” Topps 1969-70 card with the Royals. The second is a great action shot and his last card from the 1974-75 Topps set.  My son and I met him at a card show and had him sign an official NBA basketball. I wouldn’t say he was overly happy about it, but we didn’t mind. It was a thrill to meet such a great player and great man. As President of the NBA Players Association he successfully won an anti-trust suit agsinst the league paving the way for free agency and the massive salaries NBA players enjoy today. I wonder how many of them realize and appreciate that?

Russell Westbrook breaks the NBA record by triple double, surpassing Oscar Robertson
The record had stood since 1974, the year Robertson retired. “Russell Westbrook, I am very happy for you,” Robertson said in a recorded video message. “Your family is very proud of you. And I salute you for all your achievements in the game of basketball.” The record-breaking moment came on Monday night during the Wizards away game against the Atlanta Hawks, when Westbrook trapped his tenth…

Oscar Robertson, by Russell Hoban, casein paint on masonite, 1961
“Few players in basketball history have rivaled the talent and versatility of the NBA All-Star known to fans as "The Big O." Averaging upwards of twenty-five points per game during fourteen stellar seasons with the Cincinnati Royals (1960-70) and the Milwaukee Bucks (1970-74), Oscar Robertson amassed a career record of 26,710 points to become the top-scoring guard of all time. His superb playmaking and rebounding skills coupled with his phenomenal ability to sink baskets from virtually anywhere on the court, made him both a defensive weapon and an offensive threat. Although some of his achievements have since been equaled or exceeded, Robertson continues to hold one of the most remarkable records in all of pro basketball, for he is the only player ever to have double digit averages in scoring, rebounding, and assists-a "triple-double"-throughout an entire season.” - The Smithsonian Institution
Russell Hoban would move to the UK in 1969 and become a successful writer of children’s books, science fiction, fantasy, poetry, and more.
