Lead study Mexican author Luis Rodríguez, a professor emeritus at the Institute of Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico
In 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) helped identify hundreds of free-floating "rogue" planets that don't orbit a parent star. Now, astronomers have found that a pair of these planets may be producing enigmatic, hard-to-interpret radio signals.
The rogue planets spotted by JWST lie in the Orion Nebula, a long-time observational hotspot for astronomers. In total, they number over 500. This discovery bonanza was possible thanks to JWST's ability to pick up infrared radiation emitted by these relatively young planets.
Bizarrely, though, about 80 of these planets exist as pairs. Similar in mass to Jupiter, the planets orbit each other at distances ranging from 25 to 400 times the distance between Earth and the sun. These tangoing duos, called Jupiter-mass binary objects (JuMBOs), pose a huge mystery for astronomers, because the existence of these worlds challenges current theories of planet formation. Some scientists think these objects may not even be planets but rather previously unknown entities that are larger than planets but smaller than brown dwarfs, which are sometimes called "failed stars" because they blur the line between planets and stars.
The JWST data showed that JuMBOs generated infrared radiation, but the new study's authors wanted to see if these dancing objects produced radio waves. That's because different classes of cosmic objects produce distinct patterns of radio emissions. For instance, planets like Jupiter spew several types of radio signals, including gigahertz-frequency emissions thousands of times higher-pitched than an FM signal, partly because of their magnetic fields.
Spotting such signatures from the JuMBOs could help resolve their identity. The observations could also explain "why some objects have detectable radio emission and others do not," lead study author Luis Rodríguez, a professor emeritus at the Institute of Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, told Live Science in an email.
To find radio wave "snapshots" of the Orion Nebula where the JuMBOs reside, the scientists combed through archives of observations maintained by the U.S. National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). They found just one pair that apparently emits radio waves: JuMBO 24. Itself an oddity among the oddball objects, it's the heaviest of the JuMBOs, and also the one with the tightest space between its component planets.
A decade's worth of data the research team collated showed that the radio waves remained steady but strong, with a power of roughly a quarter of a ton of TNT and frequencies of 6 to 10 gigahertz. The radio waves also weren't circularly polarized, meaning they lacked spiral, twisting electric fields, the team reported in their study, published Jan. 8 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
But these features aren't what astronomers expect of signals created by planets." Circular polarization is an unambiguous indicator of the presence of magnetic fields," Rodríguez said. Without this, the team can't say definitively that the signals come from JuMBO 24 (assuming the planets have magnetic fields). Besides, radio emissions from other exoplanets are more variable and less intense.
Even if JuMBO 24 isn't a pair of planets but rather another type of cosmic duo, the signals are unusual. Signals from brown dwarfs are very different from the newly identified radio beams. The beams' brightness and frequency even ruled out the possibility of pulsars, the rapidly spinning cores of dead stars that produce pulses of radio waves at regular intervals.
The researchers also estimated the likelihood that the signals originate from an object behind JuMBO 24 and found it to be exceedingly slim, at just 1 in 10,000. And, in case you were wondering, the signals probably don't originate from aliens. "The fact that both components emit at similar levels favors a natural mechanism," Rodríguez said.
With the research at an impasse, the team is applying to the NRAO's Very Large Array in New Mexico to collect data from free-floating planets. Until then, the radio signals will remain a mystery.

just finished season 2 of Lower Decks and i'm SO glad i tried this show again
i actually started the show a while ago, but the constant easter eggs put me off.
(i still don't know how non-Trekkie viewers are meant to get the jokes where the punchline is "reference!! 😂", but lots of people enjoy it so ymmv).
i stopped a few minutes into episode 2 after Rutherford agrees to quit his job as an engineer so he can watch the Trivoli pulsar with Tendi.
i honestly thought it was going to be a storyline about a guy giving up a job he loves and making his boss angry so that he can spend time with a female friend he has a crush on, because that's the plotline i've been conditioned to expect from tv. i wasn't feeling excited about the show, so i put it on pause.
but if i'd watched for about two more seconds before noping out for a few months, i would've seen this:
when i started watching again, i realised that the episodes never bog themselves down in drawn-out, uncomfortable storyline or character staples - they're actually incredibly well-written, tightly paced, and tell their stories in just the right amount of time. Rutherford wants to be Tendi's friend (at least for now), his boss Billups is really supportive, and Tendi brings a PADD into the Jefferies tube so they can both do what they enjoy, separately but together.
another great part about that scene with Rutherford and his boss is something that Lower Decks does a lot, which is make jokes that actually rely on subverting audience expectations. a big example - and a way of referencing other parts of the Star Trek franchise that does work for me - is when the creators gently poke fun at or subvert common story beats, emotional arcs, or dramatic moments from other parts of Trek.
like when Rutherford loses his memory and Tendi is excited to get to know him again, rather than devastated that he doesn't remember her.
or when they save themselves from being smooshed by Dooplers by dramatically ejecting the warp core of their tiny model starship.
or when Tendi goes on an arc of significant personal development over the course of one (1) whole episode.
they're general enough that even people who haven't seen other Star Trek shows (or movies) can still recognise and appreciate them.
beyond this, the show also has great moments where they (lovingly) cast a light on some of the flaws and foibles in the franchise, often in subtle or comedic ways.
like showing people in beep chairs living their best lives (in contrast to TOS and SNW's view of the beep chair as a tragic, doomsday fate for Pike).
or using Tendi to comment on Trek's depiction of Orions specifically as all pirates and slavers, and alien cultures more generally as monocultures.
or even just acknowledging that Trek shows mostly focus on the bridge crew doing heroic first contact-esque adventures, when that can't be all there is to Starfleet.
heck, they even have Rutherford go on a journey of acceptance and self-discovery after a permanent memory wipe (in contrast to Uhura in TOS, where it's never mentioned again).
another reason i really appreciate the show is that the creators have taken the time to think through what a more inclusive future could look like, in ways that are noticeably lacking or absent in many other Trek shows:
beyond exploring diversity through explicit identity representation (which is still very important), it does this through its world building as well.
i love this communal sonic shower scene for what it says about gender and body politics in Trek. in the future, why would we still separate bathrooms and changing rooms by gender? and why would we have the same views and expectations around bodies that we (by "we" i mean Western countries) do now?
this short scene dismantles the idea that nudity is inherently sexual, that gender is binary and biological, that some genders can't be trusted around other genders while naked, and that heterosexuality is the default (and when you bring dozens of alien species into the mix, why wouldn't we have more and newer ways of thinking about gender?). it even has a little mention that Boimler prefers not to shower with others, leaving space for people to act however feels most comfortable for them.
it's such a little thing, but after years spent (lovingly) yelling at the screen during TNG, TOS, DS9, etc saying, "why are they assuming everyone is straight? WHY would people be this sexist?", i noticed it immediately and appreciated it immensely.
(this isn't related to the storytelling, but i also have to say - the animation in Lower Decks is so pretty???):
this isn't a perfect show, but it's funny, has fantastic storytelling, and it loves the source material without worshipping it. (which is not something i expected to say, given how it started).
plus i love these characters SO MUCH.
so far, so very good 🤞.

The Mayans Galacticos mission originates from the stars. The various star systems comprise an integral federation. This mission began a long time ago (by terrestrial standards) and is anchored in the Pleiades with several starting points, including Arturo, Antares and Sirius. The Pleiades are also known as "the luminous still", which as our solar system revolves around Alción (the Gran Sol Centrale), the main star of the Pleiades, in a cycle of 26,000 years. The mission is multidimensional, albeit with a particular emphasis on the Velatropa sector. This region of our galaxy is defined by the Pulsar Vela, located in Orion's arm of what we call the Milky Way Galaxy, more specifically Vlatropa 24: intergalactic code name of our Sun, Kinich Ahau. Our solar system is at the center of an area of 6000 light years in diameter defined by the pulsar Vela (V), a residue of a supernova at incredible speed. A pulsar is a late, advanced state of what was once a supernova. Remember Vela is just a small (but powerful) “microbe” in the galaxy. This mission oversees the planetary system Velatropa 24, with particular focus on the five internal planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Maldek (Asteroid belt time). The Arturo Probe describes how this area of Velatropa 24, including Earth (Velatropa 24.3), became the quarantine zone of free will. This is also the area of a development program known as "the fall" 0 "original sin". It was known to beings from other parts of the galactic system that within the quarantine zone of free will there would be a learning process that would focus the karmic waste of many worlds systems into a structure that would inevitably reach a point where the process could not have gone beyond the entire system of Kinich Ahau. Once the problem in the Velatropa sector was quarantined, the "guardian angels" could keep an eye on it and with the indicated time approaching, they would have increased surveillance. Why is this even necessary? In the evolution process of this star system, Planet Earth (V. 24.3) has moved away from the frequency of natural time that works in the rest of life in the universe. The reason for what is known as the Mayan civilization and the Mayan astronomy system and mathematical calendars was to help restore the correct course of time on Earth. Mayans math is the jewel of this galactic system of knowledge brought to our planet. The High Hand of Sirius began to witness this march of events by understanding the battle being waged in the collective human mind. A remedy known as the Dream Spell was sent by Sirius through Arthur's force field to help humans cross dimensions and re-align with their dimensional destiny. The Dream Spell codes transmitted to José Argüelles/Valum Votan actually describe the harmonic register of movements for stabilization of Kinich Ahau's system (Sol or V. 24). The harmonious records of planetary orbits compared to others create cycles of synchronization over time called "Dream Spells" - the specific Dream Spell code for this time is known as the Earth Time Ship. The mathematical codes for the restructuring of the human species according to a galactic/harmonic time frequency. These codes have been reduced to the practical calendar format of 13 moons and 28 days (synchronous) and are based on Syrian cycles. This is all part of the Maya Galactica mission. Maya Galacticos are planetary navigators and mapographers of the Earth’s great psychic field, of the solar system, and beyond the galaxy. This means that their perceptions, ways of knowing and communication come from a high degree of telepathic tune with the cosmos. The galactic Mayan calendar is not what it seems. The ultimate purpose of this calendar (13 months 28 days) is to make sure that the Earth is tuned into the new galactic ray. As synchronous engineers, the Maya Galacticos first deposited these codes in the form of what we call the Maya civilization and then, as a new planetary dispensation, came the Dream Spell codes. After the Dream's Spell was published, many more quadratic/five-dimensional gifts are followed to define a terrestrial pathway to the stars, known as synchronous order. On the one hand, the goal of these tools is to prevent the planet from self-destructing, on the other hand, to stabilize the planet's consciousness in a cosmic resonance with the local galaxy, so that this has an effect on the Sun. As the sun goes through its internal crises, a stabilization of the solar frequency is created that changes consciousness on this particular planet. This is a unique situation in the final phase of the Velatropa sector experiment, with the V star. 24 (Our Sun) & V. 24.3 (planet earth) as points of interest. Pacal Votan is the head of the engineering team for this experiment.”

On a completely clear night, with a perfectly clear sky, the full moon revealed in its extreme splendor and, of course, not being able to miss the luminous pulsar of the stars scattered in this sky so seductive and, finally, the sky makes its greatest revelation of this night, a cluster of these celestial bodies that stands out revealing the so familiar and comforting formation of the constellation Orion, a constellation very well known and recognized by him, by Henry.
Henry who couldn’t feel like he belonged anywhere, not even in such familiar places, like his family home, where he currently lived, where he grew up and went through the most significant moments of his life, he couldn’t even feel part of situations where he was close to people he loved and he knew that these people loved him equally, he believed that it was so derogatory, so cruel to himself and these people, but what can he do if he just can’t change that? It often made him believe that he was an alien in the middle of the Earth, well, but that must be crazy in his head, right?

A Symphony of Stars: Stellar Performances in Nature's Theater
In the vast expanse of the cosmos, where celestial bodies dance to the rhythm of gravity and light, a spectacular symphony unfolds night after night. Nature's theater is adorned with the brilliance of stars, creating a mesmerizing performance that has captivated humanity for centuries.
The Cosmic Orchestra: Stars as Musicians
Stars, those celestial luminaries, are the virtuosos of this grand cosmic orchestra. Each star contributes its unique notes, emitting light across the electromagnetic spectrum. From the fiery reds of cool giants to the dazzling blues of hot, massive stars, the variety of stellar hues paints an awe-inspiring canvas against the backdrop of the cosmos.
The Choreography of Constellations
Constellations, like graceful dancers, emerge from the seemingly chaotic arrangement of stars. Ancient cultures wove myths and stories into these stellar patterns, connecting the dots in the night sky to form celestial tales. The Big Dipper, Orion's Belt, and the Southern Cross are just a few of the constellations that have adorned the cosmic stage for millennia.
Galactic Ballet: Stellar Nurseries and Supernovae
Within the cosmic theater, stellar nurseries give birth to new stars, as clouds of gas and dust collapse under the influence of gravity. This ballet of creation is juxtaposed with the explosive finales of massive stars—supernovae. These cataclysmic events release energy equivalent to the brightness of entire galaxies, leaving behind remnants such as pulsars and black holes.
Eclipses and Planetary Transits: Celestial Cameos
Occasional celestial cameos, such as solar and lunar eclipses, add dramatic flair to the cosmic performance. The Moon, a constant companion in Earth's night sky, takes center stage during eclipses, casting shadows and creating moments of celestial alignment. Planetary transits, where planets pass in front of their host stars, offer brief but captivating performances in the vast theater of space.
Stellar Symmetry: Nebulas and Galaxies
Nebulas, with their ethereal beauty, contribute to the visual poetry of the cosmic symphony. These vast clouds of gas and dust serve as stellar nurseries, sculpted by the winds and radiation of nearby stars. Galaxies, colossal collections of stars, dance together in gravitational harmony, creating intricate spiral arms and elliptical patterns that add depth to the cosmic stage.
The Audience: Earthbound Observers
As mere spectators in this celestial theater, Earthbound observers play a crucial role. Telescopes, both ground-based and spaceborne, serve as the lenses through which we peer into the depths of space, capturing the intricate details of distant stars and galaxies. Astrophotographers, armed with cameras and passion, freeze moments of the cosmic symphony in breathtaking images.
In conclusion, the symphony of stars is an ever-evolving masterpiece, captivating our imaginations and fueling our curiosity about the vastness of the cosmos. As we gaze upward into the night sky, we become part of a timeless audience, witnessing the stellar performances in nature's grand theater. The cosmic ballet continues, inviting us to explore, marvel, and contemplate the mysteries that unfold in the celestial tapestry above.
