This is my first fic. @emobabeyy bestie I love you and this is for you. I legit kinda hate it but I went for it. :)

Date Night With Em:

A deep breath. A look in the mirror. Hands running down the long-sleeved black top and floral skirt clad on your body to smooth any creases. Another breath. Another look. Applying a fresh coat of lipstick and smiling in the mirror your finally ready. A final breath. A final look.

The knock at the door is startling causing you to take another deep breath to calm your nerves before you opened the door. “Wow. You look ravishing.” Emily winked earning a blush and a nervous look down in return. “You look stunning.” You gushed finally looking back up to admire the black suit Emily was wearing. A black blazer, black shirt and black pants. Like that’s hot and she’s Em so it’s even hotter. “First stop of the night. We have a reservation to get Korean food but we aren’t eating it in the restaurant.” Em spoke holding her arm out for you to link which you immediately did before heading to her car.

“Here you go.” Em smiled holding the car door open for you to get in the car. “Thank you.” You responded getting in the car and buckling yourself as she walked around to get in the car herself.

“I can’t believe how cheesy your pick-up line was.” You spoke while she was driving making her blush and avoid your eyes. “In my defence. It worked.” She smirked still avoiding your eyes. “Luckily Derek warned me of your cheesy pick-up lines before he set us up.” You teased earning an eye roll. “Derek is my wingman and he warned the hot girl of my pick-up lines. And to think he helped me plan tonight.” Em muttered to herself making you smile.

“Okay we have tteokbokki. What’s next?” You questioned excited for the rest of the evening. “We are going to a field to watch the stars while we eat.” Em explained watching your face light up like a kid at Christmas. Stars are your passion and you didn’t think she knew. You just love to watch each star twinkle away without a care.

“This is beautiful.” You told Em when you saw the picnic blanket under a tree. The blanket was surrounded by fairy lights and pillows. There were a few books since you loved to read and extra blankets just in case it got chilly. There was also your favourite snacks and drinks incase the tteokbokki didn’t fill you. “I’m glad you like it.” Em smiled placing her blazer over your shoulders when the goosebumps on your arms were noticed. A deep breath. A look at the girl.

“Em look! It’s so pretty. There’s an Orion’s belt. The three stars in a row.” You excitedly explained. “I know. So pretty.” Em answered as you looked over to see her lay on her side looking at you and not the stars. Another breath. “So are you.” You whispered laying next to her a placing a gentle kiss upon her lips. “Let’s watch the stars.” Em smiled giving you another kiss before laying on her back. You rested your head on her chest whilst hugging her looking up at the sky. Her arm wrapped around your shoulders to keep you safe.

Warnings: Murder-spoken about in detail, alcohol mentions. Summery: It’s been such a lovely evening, your boyfriend has taken you out to the movies and dinner and now you’re having a lovely starlit stroll around the park. How could anything be better?

(Authors note: This is a very dark fic, like very dark. It involves a detailed description of someone dying, please read at your own discretion.)

The breeze is cool as you walk arm in arm with Mikey around the park. It had rained earlier, while you were at dinner, and now the damp air is filled with the scent of freshly cut grass and wet concrete but, it wasn’t unpleasant. Looking around, the trees danced in the slight wind and stars could be seen between the few clouds that loomed over you, casting shadows from the almost full moon. It was quiet and serene, just you and him. You hugged your coat a little bit tighter. It was a beautiful one, not cheap either, that he had bought for you; made of alpaca wool, a caramel sort of brown and fluffy. It went down to almost your knees and you loved it very dearly. You called it your ‘teddy bear coat’.

He, Mikey, had taken you to see a movie and then out for dinner at the most lavish place you could imagine. “It’s a special evening” he’d told you but never given you a reason as to why. Now you were walking through a park only a few blocks away from the restaurant and he was pointing out constellations. It was marvellous when he was like this, attentive and sweet and lucid. He had a bad habit of getting locked up inside his own head and becoming distant and irrational. That warm feeling comes over you like a tide in how quickly it rises but less forceful, like air in how it fills you but more tangible. You love him and he loves you, he’s told you hundreds of times before. Maybe he’ll forgive you.

You have a secret, you’re not actually a part time pre-school teacher but, in fact, a detective in the NYPD and you’d been sent to observe him, find out everything you could. It had been thrilling at first, but as it always seems to happen in the movies, you fell for him and fell hard. He kept you out of business, said it was too “unsavoury” for a delicate thing such as yourself so you hadn’t really learned much about it. Of course you tried but, any questions were expertly side stepped or ignored all together. You had, however, spent a lot of time with him- retreats to the country side, trips to Paris or Italy, nights at the theatre and stunning parties at houses bigger than you could ever dream to afford. You had also spent many nights in his bed with him. You had no significant other to return home to so on that first night, the first time it had happened, when he took you in his arms for a passionate kiss and lead you by the hand to his bedroom, you had no objections. He was an excellent lover and you don’t regret a single moment you spent with him. 

Tonight was the night, however, that you had to come clean.

Mikey dropped your arm for a moment to reach into his pocket and pull out a flask and raise it to his lips to take a long swig of what you assumed was whiskey. He edged the flask in your direction as an indication that you should do the same. Your fingers brushed his as you took it from his grasp and the cool liquid stung as it travelled down your throat to heat your belly. You would need all the courage you could muster and liquid courage is as good as any. Handing the leather bound container back to him, he placed it securely in his breast pocket. You sighed. Would it still be like this after he knew the truth?

“And that one’s Orion’s belt. Good story that” he continued.

It had only just occurred to you that he’s been talking for a while now, you were too wrapped up in your own thoughts to listen.

“I haven’t heard that one, tell it to me” you said, now returned to reality and interested in the tale. He was always a good story teller.

“Well Orion was boasting one day to the goddess Artemis, she’s the god of the hunt, you know, and her mother Leto that he could kill any beast on this earth. “Bring it before me and I will lay it down!” he’d said. Very full of himself that guy. I suppose all the gods were, even though he was only like 3/4 god I suppose. So anyway, the earth goddess overheard and devised a plan. a test of sorts. She sent a scorpion to him and the scorpion stung him on the ankle and he died. That’s only one of the stories of it though. Everyone argues about how it actually happened- if he was saving Leto from the scorpion or trying to force himself on Artemis and she sent the little critter. Either way it doesn’t really matter, the outcome is the same. He gets stung and-”

“I need to tell you something!” You weren’t sure where it came from but the words erupted out of you. You couldn’t wait any longer.

“what is it? There’s nothing I don’t already know about you” he stopped walking now and turned to you, putting his hands on your shoulders as if you steady you. You had seemed quite distressed to burst out like that.

“I- well its....Look I love you. I really do” you began

“Well, I’m glad to hear it.“ he laughed. His smile put you at ease. Those perfect teeth and plump lips curving into a half moon shape towards his eyes- eyes that you could get lost in and often did. 

“Hey, just listen. You know I told you that I’m a part time teacher over at saint Johns? Well, that’s not exactly the truth. I’m. Well...”

“you’re a cop” He added

“Exactly! And I’d wanted to tell-. Wait. How did you know that?” you were taken aback. How could he have known? How long had he known? As if he had read your mind, he answered.

“I found out yesterday, talked to my brothers about it.” his voice was lower now, more sombre as if it brought him great sadness to even think about it.

“Where does that leave us?” you asked

There was a long pause, he didn’t look at you but instead behind your right shoulder, staring off into the distance. He seemed quite pensive. Another breeze rolled though the air making you shiver and a bird called out in a far off tree. You were suddenly all too aware that no one was around. It had occurred to you before, made the evening seem more romantic but, now that this information was out in the open it scared you a little. You could see the handle to Mikey’s gun peering out of the holster beneath his blazer. After what felt like minutes of silence, he finally spoke again.

“You already know how this ends” His tone was dire and it sent a chill through you.

Before you could respond and ask what the hell that even meant, a leg, Mikey’s leg, sweeps underneath you- knocking you to the ground. The force of your impact sends a huff of air out of you and the ground is cold and still wet from the earlier rain beneath your form. Before you have time to register what’s going on, he’s on top you you.

His hands go to your throat and tighten dramatically. Surely you think surely this isn’t really happening? He loves me, I know he does. This isn’t really happening. This thought it short lived, however, as your vision is already beginning to dot and you can feel your face reddening and growing hot from the lack of blood and oxygen. His face is contorted above you into a pitiful look and you feel something drip onto your face. Is he crying? You try your best to take a better look and it sent a second chill through you. He’s crying because he has to kill you. 

It may seem daft, lying on your back in an empty park with your lovers hands strangling you and it only just occurred to you, now, that you’re going to die, but everything had happened so quickly and you still loved him, even with his hands around your neck, so much that you didn’t immediately think of that. This sparks something wild in you. Your own hands go to his face, slapping and clawing at him as best you can with limited air and in this position- doing anything you can for another sweet, sweet breath of air. It’s all to no avail, spots are becoming bigger and more frequent in your vision, your arms are tired and your lungs burn from the deprivation of oxygen. Within a minute or so they fall to your sides, slapping his thighs on the way down and you look up at him one final time. 

“I’m sorry” you manage to strain and gargle out. Had you know this would be the last thing you’d say to him, or ever, you might have picked something better. Nonetheless, this was fitting. You were sorry. Sorry for lying, sorry for agreeing to the job and sorry for ever moving to New York in the first place. Somewhere in the back of your mind the image of a scorpion climbing onto a frogs back appears- an old fable your mother used to tell you before bed. They’re half way across the river when it stings and the water is dark and angry as they both get pulled under. “It is in my nature” was the scorpion’s response. This is how you felt about Mikey., you could not hate him for it, as much as that would be the easiest emotion to conjure up, as he was simply doing what he knows. What he does best. What’s in his nature.

Your vision slowly begins to vignette until only a pinprick of sight is left. He is still crying, still straining to choke the life from you as quickly as possible- you suppose that’s the only mercy he can give you right now. A quick death. With all that’s left of your vision, you look up. The stars are still beaming up above you and Orion’s belt is shining in all it’s glory. Of all the things you could notice right now, the stars were probably the best one. You blink slowly, a small wheezing sound escapes your lips and before you can think of anything else, the world goes dark.

He stays like that for a few minutes after your eyes close, making sure every last string of life has been well and truly drained from you. He’s still crying as he does it. Eventually he will raise himself up, wipe the tears from his face and take a quick look around. The park is still empty, still dark and for the first time this evening he is alone. It does not feel good. He looks down at his hands. Hands that were toughed by work and age, hands that had done unspeakable things that he couldn’t admit to himself let alone to you.

Slowly he will walk home, close the front door behind him and lock it. “Is it done?” His brother will say to him, he forgets which one. “Yes” he will reply. They will say something else, but he isn’t listening. That night he will drink himself stupid, until there are no more thoughts of hands and throats and eyes looking into his that are lit up by the stars above. It’ll become a fever dream and nothing more.

Tomorrow a paper will be placed in front of him, the headline will say something about a dead NYPD officer. He will not read it.

He likes the moon a lot, because there is a legend behind it that he heard from his mother.

The first person that he met was Colette, yet something told him that he couldn't be as charming with her so he was genuinely nice to her. She was the one that helped him figure his way around the place after he got sorted into the Heartslabyul dorm. She also introduced him to Titus and Ignis, who immediately became friends with him and didn't hesitate to include him in the group.

In the Nightmare Before Christmas, Oogie Boogie is seen as the ultimate villain, banished underground, cruel, and vile. He has an entire song and his lair is seen as that of a casino. Astro, like Oogie Boogie, has some insects that swarm around him, yet it's usually moths. He is actually working towards owning a casino someday, already having designed the place and how it'd be like.

The others in his idol group are not at the school, but they are currently working on other things for future concerts. The group is not on a hiatus, but performing is much harder since he is the one that writes the songs and produces the music as well as creates the choreography.

His favorite kind of music is actually pop, but moreover the songs that Gale introduces to him, they are bops.

He can't stand Neige Leblanche. He thinks that he's a tryhard.

He hates fried things. He will eat it if he has to, but he avoids fried foods.

He has a giant stuffed bear that's about as tall as him named Sir Waffles de la Donut.

The Model and the Idol: Vil + Astro

Vil knew that Astro would be coming to the school merely an hour after he had posted about it. He follows him on Magicam, and his follower count is not bad. Most of his posts are mainly of food he has, backstage schemes, him with the other idols, or even beaches. Sometimes he even shares pieces of music he’s working on there. Astro likes Vil’s Magicam because it’s very aesthetic and he honestly finds modeling something fascinating. It’s not something he’d like to get into, but it’s gotten his curiosity. 

The Contractor and the Gambler: Azul + Astro

Oh dear, Azul sees a way of trying to swindle Astro, seeing as he’s an idol and a gambler, two very dangerous things. What he doesn’t realize is that Astro is not as dumb as he looks and as a gambler, he makes sure that he doesn’t need his Unique Magic to win. Most of the time, when Azul tries to coerce him into signing a contract, it’s Astro playing around with him. The twins don’t even scare him, he’s a centimeter taller than them so he likes to tease them by calling them short. RIP Regina George and her groupies. 

Braincell Volleyball: Kalim + Astro

Kalim is so genuinely excited to see him constantly because he’s just an exciting person to be around. Astro knew of him because he’s a prince and he can already tell a lot of stuff about him. It was fun for Kalim, because this guy that he did not know knew a lot of stuff about him  without even trying. They are good friends and there are times where Kalim tries to be helpful by offering his dorm as a concert hall. Astro respectfully declines it every time, much to the relief of the other Scarabia residents. 

Slight Shady Writers: Rook + Astro

Poetry is like songwriting with its rhythm and flow. Rook and Astro meet up from time to time to discuss their findings of inspiration and their muses. Astro’s muse is the atmosphere around him, most of the time. He doesn’t have a specific person that’s his muse, even though Rook thinks otherwise. Either way, they are slightly shady when they are seen together so people make sure to steer out of their way. 

Dumb and Liar: Sebek + Astro

Astro has immediately found out Sebek’s weak point of Malleus and he uses it to his advantage SO MUCH. He probably even makes up lies about him and Sebek believes him. There was this one time where he lied and said that Malleus’ horns would vibrate when he was lying. Sebek sat him down and asked him a bunch of questions. The questions alone let Astro in on what was going on in the school, but not before him absolutely losing it with laughter.

Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar (episodes 23-25: Iscandar and Beyond)

PREVIOUSLY ON STAR BLAZERS...

Earth has been hopelessly irradiated by a race known as the Gamilons, and in one year’s time, even the underground cities the survivors have fled to will be unlivable.

The people of Earth have been sent a message from Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar, a planet 148,000 light years away.  She has sent Earth plans for a Wave Motion Engine to assist them in coming to Iscandar to retrieve a device known as the Cosmo DNA, which is capable of removing the radioactivity.

The Wave Motion Engine has been installed on a converted WW2 Japanese battleship known as the Yamato (rechristened the Argo) and crewed with an inexperienced team of volunteers known as the Star Force, commanded by Captain Avatar.

The Star Force has defeated a Gamilon fleet that was tasked with destroying them. They are now on the edge of the Great Magellanic Cloud, the galaxy that is home to Iscandar.

As the Argo enters the Magellanic Cloud, their navigation instruments begin malfunctioning, pointing them to a different heading than they are going. Sandor says there’s nothing wrong with them, so it’s coming from an outside source (gee, I wonder who...)

Homer checks for a signal, and finds out it’s not the Gamilons, but Starsha of Iscandar! Starsha congratulates the Star Force on nearly completing their journey (well, half of it anyway; they still need to get back to Earth) and tells them to follow her homing signal to the eighth planet in the system.

Later on the observation deck, Wildstar and Nova pose for a picture with the Magellanic Cloud in the background.

(Isn’t it cute that they thought we’d still be using cameras with film in the 22nd century?)

Nova calls the event their first date, which is a bit of a shock to Wildstar.

Meanwhile, the signal from Iscandar suddenly stops. Wildstar wonders what the issue is, since they still have the navigation heading. Then Venture tells him that there are two planets in the eighth orbit.

Suddenly, the blue planet vanishes (Homer guesses it’s due to jamming, but how can jamming a radio signal make part of a visual disappear?) and Eager reports incoming missiles!

Wildstar orders the ship’s guns to shoot down the missiles, but a number get through and cause a metallic cloud to form around the Argo, causing the ship’s instruments to go haywire as Venture tells Orion to stop the engines.

Wildstar doubts his ability to command as a result, but orders Conroy to fly out and get samples from the missiles’ debris (FINALLY! Conroy gets to do his job!)

Once Conroy returns, Sandor analyzes the missile fragments, deducing they are Gamilon in origin. Wildstar wonders if the Gamilons are on Iscandar, while Sandor offers two theories: either the Gamilons are occupying Iscandar...or working with them!

Yeah...that’s my reaction too, Wildstar.

Suddenly, Wildstar remembers there are two planets out there, coming to the conclusion that one is Iscandar...and the other is Gamilon! (OK, so why the hell are the Gamilons attacking a backwater planet 148,000 light years away? There’s GOT to be closer planets to pick on!)

Meanwhile at the capital of Gamilon (which is revealed by be under the surface of the planet), Leader Desslok receives a call from Queen Starsha, who chastises Desslok for attacking her guests. Desslok reveals that both Gamilon and Iscandar are doomed planets. Desslok is planning on colonizing Earth once the radiation does its job (again, Earth is 148,000 light years away. There HAS to be someplace a hell of a lot closer. Hell, they could’ve colonized Balan!) She then mocks Desslok for not being able to defeat a single battleship from that backwater planet (neglecting to mention that she gave them the means to create their most dangerous weapon)

Desslok then gives his people exposition that they should already know: Due to the volcanic nature of Gamilon, there are two crusts with a hollow space between (where the Gamilons live) Gamilon’s volcanic core is becoming unstable, belching sulfurous compounds into the air and sea, turning their waters into sulfuric acid. For this reason, they are seeking a new home on Earth (you’d think if they asked nicely then Earth would’ve welcomed the Gamilons, especially if they shared their tech)

Desslok then reveals his latest scheme: he will use a giant magnet beam to pull the Argo (now surrounded by the magnetic missile debris) into Gamilon’s seas, then alter the weather to make sulfuric acid rain down on the Argo, dissolving the ship. So Desslok is now stealing tech from Wile E. Coyote?

Meanwhile on the Argo, Wildstar questions Starsha’s motives (you’d think Earth Defense would be doing that before the Argo even left Earth) when Starsha contacts the Argo, confirming that Iscandar and Gamilon are twin planets.

Later in Captain Avatar’s quarters (where the Captain is now spending most of his time due to his radiation sickness), Wildstar briefs the Captain on the day’s events. Captain Avatar reminds Wildstar that the Gamilons stand in their way of reaching Iscandar.

Suddenly, the ship is rocked as the Gamilons’ magnetic beam pulls the Argo under the outer crust of Gamilon.

The Argo makes a splash landing in the Gamilon sea. Wildstar orders IQ-9 to analyze the sea, but...

...apparently IQ-9 forgot to fasten his seat belt. While Nova and Sandor reassemble IQ-9, a storm starts over the Argo. Once he’s reassembled, IQ-9 tells Wildstar they’re in a sea of sulfuric acid and will dissolve the ship. Venture immediately tells Orion to hit full thrust on the engine so they can get out of it, but...

...the supports for the newly-repaired Bridge #3 are weakened enough that it falls off, now destroyed for the second time in as many episodes. Sandor reports the rain is also sulfuric acid. Then, as if things weren’t tense enough, Eager reports incoming bombs from above!

Then the narrator chimes in, signaling one hell of a cliffhanger!

When we tune in the following day (the station I watched the show on followed a M-F airing) the Gamilons continue to up the ante by launching missiles.

Meanwhile, Desslok orders General Krypt to intensify the storm (since their gunners can’t hit the broad side of a broadside)

Unsure what to do, Wildstar comes to see Captain Avatar, who advises Wildstar to submerge the Argo (he estimates the hull is thick enough to survive 10 minutes underwater...err, underacid) and use the Wave Motion Gun on one of the volcanoes to trigger a chain reaction violent enough to distract the Gamilons so that the Argo can escape.

The crew is, to say the least, apprehensive about this plan, but follows Wildstar’s lead as IQ-9 scans for a volcano powerful enough to pull off this insane plan.

As the acid starts dissolving the extremities of the ship, IQ-9 finds the Argo’s target. Wildstar fires the Wave Motion Gun...

The blast sets off the volcano, which was connected to other volcanoes that also erupt violently, destroying the nearby Gamilon city. Desslok looks at the results of his plan...

...and loses his mind, cackling madly at this absurd turn of events as he realizes he doomed his own planet with his obsession, but at least he destroyed the Star Fo--

...nice try Desslok!

Desslok, still coming back to reality, thinks it’s a ghost ship, but orders all missiles to fire on them. General Krypt tries to reason with Desslok before he actually does destroy Gamilon. However, Desslok has well and truly gone full-on Elmer Fudd on Bugs Argo.

On the Argo, Sandor gives the laundry list of damage reports to Wildstar as Eager reports every Gamilon missile heading their way.

Wildstar orders all functioning guns to shoot down as many missiles as possible. Unfortunately there are more missiles than guns, so the Argo continues to take damage. Then Wildstar comes up with a so-crazy-it-might-work plan: fly the Argo into the center of their command center so any stray missiles will damage them as well.

The explosions from the stray missiles destabilizes the support pillars holding up the outer crust, causing it to collapse.

Desslok’s command center is destroyed and he is barely able to reach an escape craft as the Star Force limps off to Iscandar.

Speaking of the Star Force, they once again take heavy losses in this battle with the Gamilons as Wildstar surveys what’s left of the ship. During his survey, he discovers Nova collapsed on the deck, crying. She says she’s tired of all the fighting, especially so close to Iscandar. Wildstar says he thinks this was their last battle against the Gamilons (on the one hand, YA THINK?! You just wiped out their planet! On the other, way to jinx it Wildstar!)

As what’s left of the Argo clears what’s left of Gamilon and Iscandar is visible over the horizon, Captain Avatar delivers a rousing pep talk from his bed.

Upon orbiting Iscandar, Starsha sends a homing signal to the Argo so they know where to land.

...and they’ve already rebuilt Bridge #3 again. Do they have a warehouse of those things? Venture lands the Argo in the ocean near the capital city and the command staff (minus Captain Avatar, who’s still sick in bed) disembarks to meet Starsha

Starsha mistakes Nova for her sister Astra (who flew the ship that delivered her message to Earth...also, as I’ve noted, all the important women in this show look very similar), but Wildstar informs her that Astra didn’t survive the trip.

Starsha then begins having her drones load the crates of parts needed to assemble the Cosmo DNA aboard the Argo, so Sandor’s team can assemble and test it on the return trip (please tell me why Astra couldn’t fly all these parts to Earth when she brought Starsha’s message?)

Starsha allows the crew a bit of shore leave while the Argo’s repairs are made. Nova notices that, although the planet is breathtaking, they haven’t seen any inhabitants except Starsha. Startha then reveals she’s the last of her race; the rest were killed by a mysterious disease. She then leads Wildstar and Nova back to the city where she reveals...

...Wildstar’s brother Alex! OK, I wanna know how THAT was possible, considering his ship crashed on Titan!

Fortunately, Starsha explains. It turns out that Alex survived the crash, only to be taken prisoner by the Gamilons. The ship carrying him to Gamilon was damaged and crashed on Iscandar, where Starsha nursed him back to health (highly implausible, but not the craziest thing this show has tried to pull off)

Starsha is visibly distressed when she asks that the Star Force take Alex with them back to Earth, but Nova realizes Starsha has fallen in love with Alex.

On the Argo, Alex has an emotional reunion with Captain Avatar...

...and Sandor. Wildstar suggests bringing Starsha with them as well.

Meanwhile, Orion’s assistant Sparks makes suggestions about staying on Iscandar instead of returning to Earth. After Orion tells him off for even making that suggestion, he tells Nova he needs to take her to see someone.

However when Wildstar makes the suggestion, she politely declines, saying that she can’t bear to leave her home. She then shows Wildstar an image of crew from the Argo on one of Iscandar’s islands. It turns out they want to settle, but the island is unstable and could sink at any time. Wildstar immediately excuses himself and rushes back to the Argo.

On the Argo, Venture tells Wildstar that Sparks and 12 others have deserted. Sparks radios in to tell Wildstar they’re staying. Then Nova gets on the radio to cry for help. So...they intend on making her an unwilling brood mother? That’s not creepy at all...

Then Eager reports a tidal wave coming their way. Wildstar orders Venture to take off and Conroy to send a rescue party for the deserters. However, only Nova survived (were the others really worth saving, given what they intended on turning this anime into hentai?)

On the Argo, Venture reports the ship ready to return. Captain Avatar defers to Wildstar (is he really just a Deputy Captain by this point?), who gives the order. Captain Avatar once again asks Starsha to join them, but again she declines.

As the Argo prepares to leave, Starsha (at Nova’s urging) declares her love to Alex. Alex realizes he loves her as well and decides to stay behind.

Wildstar is disappointed, but wishes Alex the best, glad his brother is alive and happy.

All in all, the Star Force spent about a month on Iscandar repairing the ship and revitalizing themselves. They have just over 4 months to make the trip home, when it took then just over 6 to get there. Of course, it shouldn’t take as long since they won’t have to worry about the Gamilons...right?

As the Argo makes its long journey home, Sandor completes his work building the Cosmo DNA. The return trip is relatively uneventful as they make it back to the Milky Way and can communicate with Earth Defense once again. Wildstar reports to Earth Defense about Captain Avatar’s radiation sickness.

Speaking of the Captain, he hints to Dr. Sane that he knows he’s dying, but wants to live long enough to see Earth once more as it was.

On the bridge, Venture prepares the ship for its final space warp before reaching Earth, commenting how quiet it is without the Gamilons.

Oh, you just had to jinx it, didn’t you? The remnants of the Gamilons, led still by Desslok, prepare to fire their not-at-all-egotistically-named Desslok Cannon (similar to the Wave Motion Gun) at the Argo as it warps away. Furious, Desslok orders his crew to warp after them (without plotting a course)

Three guesses what happens next...

Desslok’s ship and the Argo materialize in the same space. Desslok takes advantage of this stroke of luck and boards the Argo, sending toxic gas ahead of them.

The Gamilons begin their assault in the engine room. Orion warns the bridge of the attack. Wildstar takes Gunnery Assistant Dash and Conroy to help fight them off.

He then comes face-to-face with Desslok, who laughs about the ship being commanded by a cadet (well, it is rather absurd...), then reveals his latest scheme: he will knock out the crew with his radioactive gas (that the Gamilons can breathe just fine), then crash the Argo into Earth Defense HQ.

In Sickbay, Nova (why is she doing nursing duties instead of being at her radar post on the bridge?) hears Venture’s announcement about the radioactive gas and immediately runs out of sickbay (without a mask)...

...to the Cosmo DNA (well, guess now’s a good a time as any to test it)

Surprisingly, it works, dispersing the radioactive gas. However...

...she had taken a hell of a lungful of the gas and collapses, falling from the Cosmo DNA! (Let that be a lesson kids: WEAR YOUR MASK!)

Meanwhile, it seems the Gamilons can’t breathe Earth-like air and retreat as the radioactive gas vanishes, warping away as they break free of the Argo.

Sandor tells Wildstar what Nova did (and the price she paid)

(You know, I really wish they had built more to this Moment rather than just hinting at it throughout the series)

Sandor rushes to get Dr. Sane as Wildstar’s emotional barriers crumble.

In Captain Avatar’s quarters, Wildstar has all but given up hope that Nova will recover, but Captain Avatar reminds him that the Star Force is all about hope and not to give up.

Some time later, the Earth is within sight! The crew is joyous about returning home...well, almost all of them. Wildstar mopes to Sickbay to see Nova.

I’m pretty sure that’s against doctor’s orders, Wildstar...

Wildstar takes Nova to the bridge to see the Earth together. We are then treated to an inner monologue about how Wildstar didn’t realize his feelings until he realized he could lose her. Typical guy...

The bridge crew clears a path for Wildstar as he tells Nova’s unconscious form all about his plans for them to settle down together.

However...

...you knew he wasn’t gonna give up that easily. The Gamilons prepare once again to fire the Desslok Cannon. However...

...we are treated to one final deus ex bullshit as Sandor reveals he treated the ship in a reflective coating similar to the Reflex Gun satellites that deflects the energy from the Desslok Cannon back at the Gamilons!

With the Gamilons well and truly defeated...wait...*dramatic pause*...nothing? OK.

With the Gamilons actually well and truly defeated, the Argo continues on to Earth.

In the Captain’s quarters, Captain Avatar asks Dr. Sane for some private time as he gazes on the Earth for the last time...

...and passes away as Dr. Sane returns.

Meanwhile on the Bridge...

...Nova awakens from her coma! There is a great celebration as Dr. Sane arrives to tell the crew of the captain’s passing.

It’s not stated in the series, but according to the Star Blazers wiki, the Argo returned with just under a month remaining.

Hang on. Calling anime "Japanimation" was a thing? I've been watching anime for over a decade and never heard that term in my life outside of abridged parodies.

Hahahah, yeah it sure was a Thing! The term ‘Japanimation’ has a long history going back to the 70s when shows like Gatchaman and Space Battleship Yamato were being dubbed and brought to the US (as Battle of the Planets and Star-Blazers respectively).

The more ‘correct’ term of ‘anime’ began catching on in the West Coast sometime in the 90s. If you weren’t in involved in very small anime VHS trading/buying fandom subculture (70s-80s), then you probably wouldn’t have heard the term until sometime in the late 80s through mid 90s when Blockbuster video stores had a “Japanimation” section that was separate from all other sections in a store.

Anime VHS didn’t become more accessible until the 90s, mostly due to Blockbuster and Suncoast video store, and the increase in companies that were licensing for dubbed and subbed releases. I wouldn’t be surprised if Laserdiscs were advertised with the term as they were just about the only way to get a legit and high quality subbed release in the late 80s.

Here’s a quote from an LA Times article about that from 1996:

“Nine companies distribute Japanese animation in the United States. All but two entered the American market within the last three years. Last year two major home video companies decided to toss their hats into the American anime ring, which until then was dominated by small vendors. Orion Home Entertainment has a deal to distribute Streamline Pictures’ 50 animeitles. Simultaneously, England-based PolyGram Video decided to try its hand at selling Japanimation in the United States.”

This article includes the terminology shift from ‘Japanimation’ to ‘anime’, which explains why I don’t recall the term lasting beyond ‘98, which was around the time that Bandai launched their online store—AnimeVillage—they never used the term. I bought the subs of Escaflowne and MS Gundam 0079 movies on VHS through that site ($120 for that Escaflowne set was a lot of table bussing tips for me). This was also around the time that Toonami/Cartoon Network/whatever was airing more dubbed anime, and they did not use the term.

You’ll find the term show up a lot in anime trailers that were on VHS put out by CPM/US Manga Corps, and they would advertise with it in their comics (English translations of manga). Of the various manga I have that was published in English (Eclipse, Viz, Comico, Dark Horse, CPM, Antarctic Press), only CPM consistently uses the term in the early to mid 90s. I’d have to dig through hundreds of single issue comics to confirm though.

EPISODE 21

“We have not sought out the Gamilons, they have found us, first in our homes on Earth and now here. We must face them and defeat them before we get to Iscandar.” - Captain Avatar

We had no way of knowing it ahead of time, but the velocity of storytelling on STAR BLAZERS was about to increase exponentially as we entered the fifth week of broadcast. The original Japanese series of YAMATO had been planned to run for 39 episodes, but the show got horrible ratings, attracting only an anemic 6% share of television audiences. Consequently, the broadcast station cut their commitment to YAMATO back to 26 episodes, which meant that the production team suddenly only had six episodes remaining in which to wrap up all of the assorted elements of their story. 

Following last episode’s destruction of the Gamilon base on Planet Balan, General Lysis has returned to Gamilon to face a Court Martial as a consequence of his actions. At the trial, the defiant Lysis is confident, even brash: “My operations never fail! If there had been no call from Desslok, it would have succeeded!”But the assembled Gamilon High Command isn’t hearing it. “Stop blaming everyone but yourself! With your arrogant stupidity, you have cost us an important base! Our control of (the) galaxy will be greatly limited!” accuses General Talan, soon to be an important figure in the saga. In what may be a first for a cartoon aired in America, the assembled Generals vote for the Death Penalty.

In his private quarters, where he’s attended by a bevy of willowy Gamilon beauties, Leader Desslok is brought the results of the trial by General Krypt (who at last is evidencing a healthy blue pallor.) Krypt tells Desslok that the verdict was unanimous, but the great Gamilon leader isn’t having it. “I know that Lysis is often rash, even dangerous, but he is the only one of my generals I can depend on to defeat the Star Force. Of course he’s made mistakes, but at least he does something, not like those who sit in judgment on him.” Desslok chooses to pardon Lysis and send him back into battle with the Star Force for a decisive showdown.

In the original plan for YAMATO, the journey from Balan into the Greater Magellanic Cloud would have taken place over several episodes and adventures, but now the production team didn’t have nearly that much track. So instead, the back half of the Star Force’s journey into Iscandar space would be completed in only two episodes, and with a single massive conflict involved. Informed of his pardon, Lysis is given new orders to prevent the Star Force’s entry into the Magellanic Cloud by any means necessary.

Despite having testified against Lysis at his trial, Volgar remains as his second in command. It’s never stated outright here, but the between-the-lines sense is that this mission is a last chance effort for the both of them. If they fail this time, there’s not going to be any coming back. Lysis and Volgar scout locations for their coming conflict, eventually settling on the Rainbow Galaxy, an area of space where the Star Force’s radar equipment will be unable to function properly. Lysis has also got some specialized new weapons to bring to the party: an energy beam system capable of warping small fighter planes across the battlefield, which he nicknames S.M.I.T.E. (Space Matter Instant Transforming Equipment) and a colossal Drill Missile, which he intends to fire directly into the Argo’s Wave-Motion Gun, destroying it. 

His plans laid out, Lysis takes the direct approach in attracting the Star Force’s attention: he sends a message of challenge directly to them, exciting the crew: “To Captain Avatar of the Star Force: The battle lines between the forces of Gamilon and Earth have never been precisely drawn. I propose we meet at the edge of the Magellanic Cloud, at RXPT730 in seven Earth days. The outcome will determine your future. If, as I expect, we defeat you, your mission to Iscandar will be finished. You can, if you wish, withdraw now and return to Earth. This is Lysis, commander of all Gamilon forces!”

Wildstar is, of course, overjoyed at the thought of a direct confrontation with the Gamilons, and he points out that if they don’t defeat them, they’re going to have to fight them all the way back to Earth on the return trip as well. The rest of the crew isn’t so sure. Sandor points out that the Star Force is outnumbered a hundred to one, and Venture says that their schedule is already extremely tight--even if they win, the delay might be enough to prevent them from getting back to Earth in time. It’s Orion who points out that Captain Avatar is present, and all eyes turn to the old man to deliver his decision on the matter.

And Captain Avatar chooses to answer the challenge. it must be said, this is an extraordinarily stupid and foolish thing for him to do, given that all life on Earth depends on the success of this single ship. But especially in Japanese culture, it would be cowardly and dishonorable to refuse such a challenge, so like it or not, the Star Force is heading into a decisive battle in the Rainbow Galaxy for all the marbles.

As the days count down, Lysis pulls together a fleet for the mission. Rather than the hundreds of starships he’s fielded in the past, he instead selects a small task force made up of three Space Carriers and one Carrier-Battleship, augmented by his own small command vessel. We see extensive sequences of the different types of assault fighters and bombers grouping up on their respective carriers and then making their way back to the homeworld.

Lysis assembles his commanders for a briefing on strategy. They represent the front line Generals of four of the most heavily contested outliers of the Gamilon Empire. As the troops assemble, Leader Desslok addresses them, giving them a quick speech to stoke their battle readiness. And then, the assembled task Force moves out, to hunt their foe.

As they near the area of the coming conflict, Captain Avatar assembles the entirety of the Star Force in the Argo’s assembly hall. As he mounts the dais, one random crewman muses, “He doesn’t look very strong, does he?” calling back to Avatar’s recent illness. The Captain Proposes that the crew drink a toast to their coming victory in water from a once-beautiful spring on Earth. Amazingly, this is the one instance where this actually was water in the original YAMATO version, part of a ritual performed by soldiers going out to face death. 

As the episode wraps up, the Star Force enters the Rainbow Galaxy, and its radar systems cease to function. Captain Avatar orders the crew to battle stations, and everybody braces for the attack to come. And on the Gamilon side, the assembled forces of the enemy similarly brace, waiting for the impending order to launch their attack and obliterate their foe. It’s on this moment of greatest tension that the episode comes to its conclusion, letting us know that, whatever the outcome of this great battle, mankind has only 215 days left to live.

Hoooohboy. This one will be specific to their dub characterizations because that's the version I've seem most recently

Derek Wildstar: maybe? If he did he'd likely be a sparse lurker, only really following his friend/crewmate's blogs & almost exclusively hoarding posts in his likes. His biggest footprint would probably be asks, most of which would be sent Venture & Nova

Mark Venture: He feels like your standard tumblr user. May or may not have had a couple posts about the shenanigans he and Wildstar got up to while they were cadets get pretty popular. Said blog is not connected to his irl identity, so it's a little jarring for his followers to see him randomly go from reblogging memes to posting that a highly respected member of the space force routinely drinks soup out of a coffee thermos

Nova Forrester: if she did have one, she'd be an occasional poster, likely running a medical tip/doctorial blog with no personal footprint (i.e: what to do if you have a heart attack or stuff your nursing staff wants you to tell them before surgery) I could also see her possibly having a relatively low-key personal blog.

Sandor: yes. Considered a local tumblr cryptid, their blog is known by most for their A grade quips and comebacks, and, to a small subset of people, their disconcerting knowledge about what is definitely classified research, such as warp engines. They're mutuals with Nova's medical blog, often adding on to her posts with suspiciously specific anecdotes. There is no identifying info, though plenty of theories as to who they could be

Eager: yeah. Has a personal blog, often vaugeposting about their coworkers (read: crewmates) being dumbasses. Their recounting of the events of ep. 14's fight breatched containment and the phrase "didn't even get my waffle" is now common tumblr dialect.

Conroy: sadly not.

Homer: probably not, but if they did they'd only use it for a handful of very specific sub-communities

Dash: I honestly can't make heads or tails, but I'm leaning towards no

Doctor Sane: as unlikely as it would be, I find the concept of them running a blog for their cat, Mimi, adorable, so I'll say yes

Orion: Maybe. If Nova has one, he probably has one. His blog would likely run the same as her's, except swap medical advice for mechanical. Occasionally posts about how awesome his grandkids/family are

Captain Avatar: as funny as it would be to say yes, the concept of Wildstar trying to explain tumblr to him is even funnier, so I'm gonna say no.

Andromeda - The Physicians

Andromeda glyphs are like layered barcodes, rather geometric and very tactile. Typically these are seen in Bolivian amethyst and Russian quartz, but can be found in any location.

The Andromedans had a vast knowledge of healing and inscribed many crystals with this knowledge. Unfortunately many of the herbs mentioned do not grown on Earth but many of the techniques for healing (these do not require surgeries or heavy-duty drugs) are being discovered by researchers today.

Cassiopeia - The Explorers

The Cassiopeian glyphs are flowing shooting circles, meteor storms, maps, mountains and more. They are rich with detail and vary considerably from crystal to crystal.

Of all of the Star Peoples, they were the ones that chronicled their journeys and left records of the places they have been. They sought out life throughout the galaxies and left messages wherever they traveled. If you use these records for scrying, you will begin to see their journeys and understand what is out there in the Universe.

Coronus - The Dreamers

Coronus glyphs are somewhat varied, but generally are roundish and a bit like paramecium. These are read by beginning in the center and traveling outward, interpreting what is present in the other glyphs accompanying them.

The Coronus peoples dreamed ... and considered in the manner of our current day Navajo where they imagine the "seventh generation" ... they dreamed about what would happen to future generations if they initiated something. If you were a Star Trek fan, this was the famous "non-interference" regulation. But to the Coronus, they considered heavily what and interaction would cause. So like a circle, it begins as a point and expands as it grows just as a change does within each successive generation!

Cygnus - The Wanderers

The Cygnus glyphs are sort of etched bar codes although there is cross-hatching and they are somewhat geometric. They are unlike any other Star People's glyphs ... and I have only ever found them among certain Brazilian citrines.

The Cygnus peoples wandered the galaxies - they were curious to be sure, but seemed to have no goal in mind throughout their travels. It seemed to be a need only to see what was out there and then leave a few messages as if to say "we were here" ... they wandered because they dreamed, perhaps of finding another civilization such as theirs.

Draco - The Originals

These were found quite by accident in a lot of partially polished Brazilian quartz. It is interesting as the glyphs look a bit like Cassiopeia and a bit like Ursa Minor but the glyphs are raised, curved and more tactile. This is consistent with the "Originals" role since the Draconians traveled the universe and likely seeded many other cultures, including Earth.

The Draconian influence is evident all the cultures they touched and it isn't the "reign of terror" you might expect from the name. Think more like the Greek, "Plato", as opposed to the Greek, "Draco". Unlike the Earthly definition of "Draconian", these were a gentle people. They introduced law and order but in a rather generic law sense ... like the Golden Rule of doing onto others what you would have them do to you.

Hydrus - The Integrators

Hydrus glyphs are generally raised and sweeping, very tactile making them rather easy to read. And unlike the other starbrary glyphs, these can actually be quite large.

These were people who integrated with the Earth peoples and sought to find a balance among the peoples. This was always their role - to make compromise, to find the middle ground, to create the best possible scenario. They did not use force, but rather their honed negotiation skills to be passed on and taught to humankind.

Leo - The Data Gatherers

Leo glyphs are very linear and geometric ... a bit like bar codes but diagonal as a leading edge to other more flowing glyphs. These are relatively rare but can be found on quartz from many locations.

The Leo peoples rarely interacted as they observed and noted what they found. They are like archeologists, meticulously cataloging what they discovered, like an intergalactic history book. This information may have been used at a later date when interactions with humans were deemed appropriate.

Lyra - The Avatars

These are very rare starbraries and I've only found them among Brazilian quartz. The glyphs are an assortment of lines in specific orientations... kind of a cross between Lemurian lines and strange barcodes.

The Lyran peoples were leaders and guides, rather like trail-blazers or trackers. Often they paired with others to either lead them to a specific planet/colony or to find a specific planet/colony, rather like the old-fashioned "trail guide".

Orion - The Psychics

Orion glyphs occasionally are on the sides but more usually, they appear on the faces of "titanium gas phantoms" and are often referred to as "Sacred Sigils". They are very geometric and arranged in intricate patterns, underscored by the titanium wisps in the crystals.

These Star travelers were very telepathic and psychic. Their messages engraved in the quartz allow for the sensitive human to "tap into" Sigil messages as each is important to a specific Keeper at a specific time. The Orion peoples are often maligned, but in fact, they were curious, perceptive and observant ... and meant no harm.

Pegasi - The Adventurers

Pegasi glyphs are similar to Pleiadian, but more ornate and sweeping. They are a new find and in looking through my pictures, they actually turned up very occasionally ten years ago. The language in these is very interesting.

The Pegasi peoples were gregarious and adventuresome. They roamed the galaxies searching for things and peoples that interested them. It is quite possible that they sold this information to others who may be searching for planets to seed/occupy or for elements and materials they needed.

Pleiades - The Philosophers

Wavy, curvy writing is characteristic of the Pleiadians, often with what I call holographic because of the way they can only be visualized by catching them with the light although the writing does not project like a true hologram would.

Pleiadians were perhaps the most active on Earth and were said to spawn the Lemurian civilization. Before a giant tsunami wiped out Lemuria, Lemurians were sent all over Earth to "seed" Lemurian/Pleiadian culture so that it's gentle and peaceful guiding principles would be available to all earthly peoples. The Pleiadians brought philosophy, ethics, art and many other wondrous things to Lemuria.

Sirius - The Experimentalists

Sirius starbrary glyphs are sweeping and sometimes sculpted and curvy. Often, they are quite tangible and are fascinating and do resemble the Pleiadian glyphs somewhat. They are frequently within secondary growth on the crystals suggesting that they were added on perhaps over other glyphs.

Sirius peoples were very interesting and it is conjectured that their major interactions were with the Egyptians. There is similarity in Egyptian writings and the many depictions on the walls of Egyptian temples suggest a vast amount of experimentalism. The Sirius peoples may have made possible the technological advancement initiated during the Egyptian era.

Ursa Minor - The Thinkers

These are sometimes called "comet quartz" or meteor quartz". The Ursa Minor glyphs are like a meteor storm, sometimes right to left and other times, left to right. The glyphs each contain thought packets detailing the ideas from this star system. Some are musings, others are inventions and others still are inspirations. When decoded, there is a wealth of data spawned by everything from science to literature to everyday living.

Ursa Minor travelers were thinkers ... their interest was in studying various civilizations and bringing the ideas back to their own. They would often live among each planetary peoples they discovered to select the best and most useful.

Virgo - The Peace Givers

Virgo starbrary glyphs are those "read between the lines". The Lemurian lines on these starbraries are often undulating and tactile and in between those lines are intricate and minute starbrary glyphs best studied with a loupe.

The Virgo peoples were gentle and kind ... I call them the peace-makers because they spread these traits wherever they roamed. They had a gift of identifying discord and then resolving the differences. Their messages are very loving and encouraging to the developing peoples of Earth.

Orion: Favourite month? this is weird but August has always been a really good month for me, a lot of good things have happened in August.

Morning Pages #16 (22.01.2017)

Sunday 22nd Jan - 10:13 a.m.

So I saw Evan last night. The whole day before 7 p.m., I was in a wild panic hoping that my coughing would pass, and also trying on outfit after outfit (at one point I was in blue jeans), trying to find something that I felt comfortable enough in to wear out tonight. I tried on each of the three dresses, then a combination of shirts and pants and skirts and stockings versus no stockings, so on and so forth, only to - at a quarter to seven and about ten minutes before I was supposed to be on the train - returned right back to the black floral dress that I had decided on Thursday, that I would be wearing out last night. It was a good three or four hours of manic panic, I swear my body positivity is a fickle quality.

It’s actually 1:56 p.m. now, I got very sidetracked. I was on the phone to Ikaros for about an hour, a little over. Then I had a shower, then I made breakfast. I’ve been watching Mad Men, or at least Mad Men has been playing in the background while I’ve been running around trying to sort myself out. Samantha sent me a message asking how my date went. One of Evan’s friends sent him a text right before he called it a night (about 1 in the morning), asking how the date ‘went’, like it was over. I need to talk about this date in detail because I honestly want to remember it for a very long time to come. It’s not that it was the best date of my life, really, but as far as first dates go, this one was just one that I want to remember, and that I’ve been set up to remember, I guess. I have these pages to do it. I wasn’t keeping a diary the first time I went out with Marcus, or Ben, or Ikaros. But I have recorded when I met Evan, and also this - our first date.

He met me under the clocks at Flinders Street wearing a white shirt with faded, blue and purple roses (I called them ghost roses) under a fitted blue blazer and smart pants, with these pretty neat brown leather shoes. I also noticed that his socks were striped orange, black, and white, like one of the tops I got from ASOS. He just came and said hi, and we went on our way up Swanston Street. He asked if I knew anywhere we could go to eat, because his plan was to take me to Samsam the Korean BBQ place that Ikaros and I had had an unsavoury experience at ($17 tofu plate that was ridiculously not worth it, and the fact that it was one of only two vegetarian options just sent us totally over the edge). In the end, we ended up taking the tram to my uni and walking back down Swanston Street until we got to Wokks, this Thai place that was actually pretty sweet. There were a bunch of painted woks hanging on the walls, all unique and bright and interesting to look at. I had a great Pad Thai for $15 and Evan got the Pineapple Fried Rice, which he’d never had before. He has great taste in food though; I mean, we have a similar taste. And it was nice having Pad Thai again after so long. It made me really miss my time at Thailander. I told him a little about Thailander.

Over dinner, we spoke mostly about philosophy, and what kind of studies take our interest. I spoke a little about what I’m studying, and he told me about what he’s been reading. That conversation continued later when we were on the train back to Northcote.

During dinner, he also told me that he had a plan to take me to this hill that was a little past Federation Square, where we could listen to each other’s music, share our songs and discover some new things together. The idea was that whilst one of us was showing the other a song, the other would have to think about a song that reminds them of the song they’d just heard. I think we went back and forth like that maybe twenty or so times. We listened to a lot of music. The hill past Federation Square got super cold though, and it was also quite loud because of all the people who were there for the Australian Open. So we took the train back to Northcote and walked from Northcote station to the All Nations Park. We climbed (like actually climbed, because he didn’t know there was an asphalt path that lead to the top) the large rock structure where I watched the New Year’s fireworks from and listened to some more music looking over the lights of West Melbourne. We only kissed maybe around midnight. It was very gradual, which was a nice change of pace considering how hot last weekend was, with the dancing and the making out. We kissed like crazy last Friday: lip biting, slight tongue, butt-grabbing, oh I have to stop talking about this. All week I’ve just wanted to go back to dancing with Evan. The way he held me, moved with me, the feel of his arms against my arms and against my waist, on my shoulders; I felt like I was dancing with an extension of myself. Granted, we do have a lot in common. He seems to be quite sensitive, a little unsure of himself but still in pursuit of lasting self-love. He’s very polite, and very soft and kind. I was cold, so he put his arm around me and pulled me closer to him, and it was gentle and good. At one point, we were kissing to James Vincent McMorrow’s remake of ‘Higher Love’. I’m listening to it now again. I don’t know, I just feel super romantic right now. It’s not that I miss him, I wouldn’t see him today if I could. I just want to have another date with him at this point. He knows I’ll be really busy next weekend, because of drama. It’s a shame though, because next weekend is my last weekend in Northcote and he won’t live that close to me anymore once I move all the way back to South Morang. His uncle lives one street down from me as it is! On Andrew Street!

The music we were showing to each other was only just indicative of how much we actually share in common too; we have very similar tastes. We listened to Etta James’ ‘At Last’, and an instrumental jazz track called ‘Virgo’. He showed me some Tori Kelly songs and every time a song would end, we’d stop making out, until after ‘Virgo’ ended. After ‘Virgo’ ended, we just kissed in the silence. They were very passionate kisses. They weren’t eager, but tender. His lips were big, wide and firm, as I remembered them from last week. Because of the angle I was at, I kind of had to work around his nose at times, lean up and alternate between the left and right sides of his face. He had my hand around my waist, and I had my hand round his neck, touching his cheek very softly. At one point his hand was on my thigh, but that didn’t last for very long. I think he wanted to be a little more delicate last night than he was when we were in a club, and he was drunk! He told me last night that he’d had pre-dancing drinks with his friends and turned up to Laundry somewhat plastered, which was why he got dancing so quickly. It was a little disappointing to hear, I’m not going to lie. I thought that he was just naturally free and uninhibited when it came to dancing, but he needed the elixir of confidence just as much as I do. He had, however, sobered up when we were talking in the smoking room. And apparently, the bourbon shots he bought us did nothing to him either, so I think he had danced off his drunkenness very quickly. His explanation for typing his name as ‘Ecan’ in my phone though, was that he was still somewhat tipsy and spent all of his concentration making sure he had put his number in correctly, which he had. Anyway, we didn’t talk too much on the hill in Northcote, mostly on the way there and the way back home. On the way there, we were distracted by the stars. He pointed out the Southern Cross and I pointed out Orion and for a second, I thought we’d kiss there and then, but it turns out we’re both pretty shy. I actually think he might be more shy than me, because I felt like I lead most of the kisses that night. He lead most of the kisses on Friday night though. At one point he kissed me on the cheek last night of his own lead though, and that did turn into more making out. Oh, they were such delicate kisses to begin with. A lot of stopping and starting, like we’d kiss and then linger, our faces just right up next to one another’s, just savouring being that close to another person before we’d kiss one more time and continue on with that luscious cycle. It was immensely intimate. And Evan is a perfect gentleman, as his friend let me know at Laundry, his exact words being that I’d need to ‘work the crazy out of him’, which I now fully understand. I just wanted him to hold me last night, but he held himself back really. He’s polite, perhaps too polite, because he wouldn’t just take me. I knew he wanted to.

It was also touching to see how dressed up he’d gotten for me, and I was suddenly very grateful that I’d gone the classy look too with my dress, rather than with my New Look ‘boob-window shirt’. It does superb things to my rack, but it’s severely not dressy. Anyway, I’d never had a boy dress up for a first date with me before, and I’d never gotten myself dressed up for a first date either.

He also told me last night that he feels ‘really comfortable around me...already’, which was very cute. I think I might have something here, I really do. Last night was a dream and I didn’t want it to end, I really didn’t. But it was 1 a.m., and I just felt like I had to say that it was getting late. And now it’s Sunday, and I know I’m going to have to wait a week or so until I see him again because of my stupid show.

He walked me home, to Emily’s place, where he said goodbye to me on the front steps. He told me he had a great night and thanked me for coming out. I thanked him for the invitation. We kissed a little more, also very sweet with what I can only describe as a hint of potential passion (imminent passion, passion so prematurely present that it was overwhelming even in its prematurity), and we held our faces together a little longer. I whispered ‘stay in touch’ to him and he said that he would. And we parted ways. I slept very soundly last night. I wish that I had more space to write here because I could talk about last night for pages and pages, but my three pages are up.

I will just say that I hope he’s feeling as excited as I am about last night right now. I hope he feels hopeful when he thinks about me. I hope he likes me!

Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar (episodes 11-14: Desslok Takes Notice)

PREVIOUSLY ON STAR BLAZERS...

Earth has been hopelessly irradiated by a race known as the Gamilons, and in one year’s time, even the underground cities the survivors have fled to will be unlivable.

The people of Earth have been sent a message from Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar, a planet 148,000 light years away. She has sent Earth plans for a Wave Motion Engine to assist them in coming to Iscandar to retrieve a device known as the Cosmo DNA, which is capable of removing the radioactivity.

The Wave Motion Engine has been installed on a converted WW2 Japanese battleship known as the Yamato (rechristened the Argo) and crewed with an inexperienced team of volunteers known as the Star Force, commanded by Captain Avatar.

Since leaving Earth, the Star Force has all but eliminated the Gamilon presence in the solar system, including the base on Pluto responsible for the majority of the planet bombs that have plagued Earth

The Argo has now left the solar system (and took 10 episodes of the 26-episode run in doing so) as their journey continues...

We open on Gamilon where Leader Desslok...

...now in his proper blue-skinned form (guess the animators missed the memo for the first 10 episodes) hears a plot synopsis for the first part of the series from General Krypt.

But General Talan has a plan, for the Gamilons have laid a line of mines (humbly named the Desslok mines) in the Argo’s path.

On the Argo, Nova picks up the mines on radar. Sandor reveals another of his deus ex bullshit innovations: an inflatable decoy version of the Argo (wouldn’t the air inside make it explode as soon as it hit vacuum?) that they send into the field with predictable results.

Venture steers the ship to avoid the minefield, but the mines follow them. Captain Avatar orders the ship to stop moving, and sure enough the mines stop as well. Nova computes that there’s just enough space between the mines for the Argo to fly through, so Venture carefully makes his way through the field.

However, the mines begin to close ranks, making travel between them almost impossible. Once again, Captain Avatar orders the ship to stop. He then tells Nova to search the field for whatever is controlling the mines’ movement and sends Sandor and IQ-9 in a fighter to disable it (again, wouldn’t that be Conroy’s job?)

As the mines close in, IQ-9 finds the controlling mine.

...not that it’s not blatantly obvious. You’d think Talan would’ve disguised it to look like the rest of them. IQ-9 carefully opens the access panel and examines the guts of the mine, tearing away the control board with just inches from the Star Force to spare.

Captain Avatar orders Wildstar to lead a crew to clear the mines away from the Argo.

Back on Gamilon, Desslok takes great pleasure in berating Krypt and admiring the Star Force’s ingenuity.

(Note to Krypt: it’s never a good sign when your ruler laughs at you)

Desslok orders Krypt to send Captain Avatar (not sure how they knew his name. Those damn Gamilon spies on Earth that will die with the rest of the planet, I guess?) a message of congratulations as another day ends on the Star Force’s journey.

The next day, we see Wildstar and Nova sharing a Moment (Nova is making a wish on a nearby star) when...

...the ship suddenly slows to a crawl. Orion reports that there’s nothing wrong with the engine. Nova quickly mans the radar and discovers...

...an energy net has caught the Argo. Wildstar suddenly notices Captain Avatar didn’t report to the bridge when the ship hit the net.

It turns out the Captain has collapsed in his quarters. Meanwhile, Venture’s assistant Eager detects a wave of missiles heading for the Argo as Captain Avatar enters the bridge. Captain Avatar orders full reverse, but the ship is trapped in the net. Things get heated between Venture and Orion as tensions rise. The ship finally starts moving just as the missiles arrive, barely missing the Argo.

A second wave of missiles approaches, but the Argo can’t move fast enough to get out of the way. Wildstar asks permission to launch their own missiles to intercept, but Captain Avatar remains silent, so Wildstar fires them anyway.

After the Argo is safe, Captain Avatar orders Venture and Orion to apologize to each other, and there are no hard feelings. Then he turns his attention to Wildstar, who acted without orders, despite the fact that his actions saved the ship. When Wildstar attempted to defend his actions...

...yeah, that wouldn’t fly these days.

After slapping Wildstar, Captain Avatar collapses. Despite having just been assaulted, Wildstar offers to help, but Captain Avatar sends him away.

On Gamilon, Leader Desslok details his newest scheme for defeating the Star Force: etco-gas, which grows when exposed to energy and dissolves matter. Desslok plans to unleash it on the Argo while they’re trapped in the space net, and should they escape the net, the ecto-gas will herd them into a nearby star.

Meanwhile on the Argo...

Dr. Sane treats Captain Avatar for a wound that he suffered in the Battle of Pluto that has gotten worse. After Nova and Wildstar leave, he informs Captain Avatar that he also has radiation sickness, and it’s getting worse (which is why he didn’t issue the order to fire the missiles)

Later...

...the ecto-gas advances on the Argo, dissolving a portion of the ship! I’m pretty sure I know who they should call...

Since Lieutenants Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler weren’t available, Captain Avatar orders the ship to attempt to break free of the space net (shouldn’t they have been doing that this whole time?) Nova finds an opening in the space net, but it will send the Argo straight for the nearby star. Captain Avatar orders the Argo to take the opening straight into the star

Captain Avatar orders the ship’s heat shields deployed, then collapses once again! Dr. Sane is called to the bridge and once again covers for the Captain’s real issue.

To combat the heat of the star, the crew dons space suits as the Argo navigates through the star’s sea of fire (even with heat shielding, the Argo should be molten slag by now)

As the ecto-gas enters the sea of fire, the flames consume and destroy it. Suddenly, a huge gout of flame erupts in the Argo’s path, and the Argo can’t avoid it! Captain Avatar orders Wildstar to fire the Wave Motion Gun at the gout..

The blast from the Wave Motion Gun is enough to disrupt the gout, allowing the Argo safe passage through.

Back on Gamilon, General Krypt has the unfortunate task of waking Desslok and informing him the Star Force survived. Needless to say, Desslok is not pleased, and a bit concerned about the potential threat the Star Force poses to Gamilon.

As the day ends, Nova and Wildstar once again share a Moment (Nova says her wish is for a certain someone to fall in love with her, but won’t say who)

The next day on Gamilon, Leader Desslok recalls General Lysis to Gamilon with orders to deal with the Star Force once and for all.

Meanwhile, the Black Tigers are patrolling along the Argo’s flight path when they pick up an object on their radar. It turns out to be a Gamilon fighter patrol. The two sides engage. The Black Tigers chase off the Gamilons...

...but capture a damaged fighter and bring it back to the Argo. It turns out the pilot is alive, making him the first Gamilon prisoner. As Dr. Sane takes the unconscious Gamilon to sickbay, Sandor begins examining the Gamilon fighter.

In the observation room of the operating theater (why would a warship have an operating theater?) it’s Standing Room Only as it seems like the entire crew wants a look at the Gamilon pilot.

Everyone is astounded that the pilot looks Human with blue skin (Wildstar and Nova shouldn’t be astounded by the “looks Human” part, since they encountered a Gamilon on Titan, but the blue skin is a new twist)

Wildstar leaves the observation room and enters the theater with murder in his eyes as we get a flashback to Earth at the start of the war, where a young Derek Wildstar visited his (then-cadet) brother Alex at the base where he was stationed when...

...the planet bombs destroyed the city where he lived, killing his entire family.

Back in the present, Derek wants to take his anger out on the Gamilon, but...

...he couldn’t hit a guy who was obviously frightened.

Captain Avatar interrogates the pilot about the Gamilons, but he knows nothing due to his memories downloaded until he returns (then his does he know how to fly his fighter?), so Captain Avatar decides to release him, since there’s not enough food for one more mouth.

When we next see the Argo, they have been stranded in a space storm outside an area of space they call the Octopus Nebula (due to the 8 stars within), waiting for it to subside, for weeks (can’t they just space warp past it?) and the crew is getting tired of waiting. Tempers flare...

Wildstar and Venture’s scuffle is put on pause as Captain Avatar calls for a meeting of the senior staff (I still don’t understand how Cadets Wildstar and Venture (as well as Nurse-turned-radar-jockey Nova) are considered “senior staff”)

It turns out that Venture believes there’s a safe passage through the Nebula, and it would take longer to go around than wait for the passage to reveal itself, while Wildstar “respectfully” disagrees.

More time passes. Wildstar has finally had enough and plans on taking a fighter out to look for a way through (once again, that’s Conroy’s job!) It turns out Conroy thinks so as well, and tries to stop Wildstar. Unfortunately, the storm’s winds grab hold of Wildstar’s fighter and send it careening back to the ship.

Captain Avatar isn’t pleased and assigns Wildstar to scrub down the hangar deck. As Conroy laughs at Wildstar’s punishment, the Captain makes him join Wildstar for failing to stop him (since he is in charge of the squadron) As it turns out...

...the crewmen who watched Wildstar and Venture brawl are also on Hangar swabbing duty for not stopping them (at least they won’t be bored any more)

Later in the Captain’s quarters, Nova suggests to Captain Avatar throwing a party as a means to distract the crew (you mean cleaning the hangar isn’t distraction enough?), but Captain Avatar is worried about the food supply and the strain a party will put on it.

That evening, in the engine room...

...Orion is visited by his assistant Sparks, who voices his concern at the delay, and that maybe it would be better to return to Earth and use the Argo as an ark to rescue who they can before Earth becomes uninhabitable. Orion sees the merit in the suggestion, but doubts Captain Avatar will give up so easily.

Later that evening, the ship’s alarms wake Wildstar from a nightmare.

It turns out the storm has subsided! However...

...a Gamilon ship has been waiting behind the storm for the Star Force! It appears to fly into Venture’s passage, so Captain Avatar tells Wildstar to take a fighter and investigate (But that’s...oh, forget it!) It turns out that there is indeed a passage, so Wildstar flies back with the good news. However, when pressed for details, it turns out that Wildstar didn’t fly far enough to confirm the passage goes all the way through. Captain Avatar tells Venture to take the Argo through, since they can’t afford to lose any more time.

However, tempers are still flaring between Wildstar and Venture so they pick up where they left off at the beginning of the episode.

...until Nova breaks it up and talks some sense into them.

Later on the Bridge, Venture takes the Argo into the passage, but the storm starts up once again. The automatic pilot can’t keep the ship on course, so Venture takes over the controls (you mean he wasn’t steering before?) The storm intensifies, and Venture is having increasing difficulty keeping the ship on course.

...so Wildstar jumps in to assist. Between the two of them, they keep the ship on course through the passage. On the other side...

...the frustrations and anger between then are quickly forgotten as they celebrate making it through!

The Star Force survives to continue its journey, but lost a lot of time in the Octopus Nebula that they’ll need to make up
