The Cabinet of Curiosities' adaptation of Pickman's Model pretty clearly does not believe the original story can be stretched out into an hour (probably correct, honestly). The problem is that instead of trying to build on the source material, the show chooses to bolt on a completely unrelated concept, while still keeping the original twist. Like, this can either be a story about a painter of disturbing creatures who turns out to be using real references, or it can be a story about some cursed paintings. Trying to do both at the same time means they just undercut each other. Be honest with me, if you weren't already familiar with the original story, would Thurber picking up the photograph in the cellar even register to you? Or would you just assume Pickman's paintings were summoning monsters somehow?
Speaking of Thurber, this creates a pitfall for his character because it hinges on the original twist. Instead of having him be Pickman's supporter until he sees the photograph, the show has him turn on Pickman at the 10 minute mark which means we get 50 minutes of him whining about cursed paintings. No buildup, no change. And no, throwing in a time skip and some veiled references to his alcoholism and failed artistic endeavors does not help.
And since no discussion of this episode would be complete without mentioning Crispin Glover's crazy fucking accent: it is the most sincere recreation of Lovecraft's phonetic New England dialogue I've ever heard, 10/10. Out of respect for his commitment, I will ignore the fact that Pickman definitely doesn't talk like that in the story.
#pickman's model#hp lovecraft#shoutout to oriana leman for the subtle and excellent monologue during the dinner scene#she really nailed that sense of trying to casually tell a story that you are actually quite disturbed by

Wasn’t there some super unsubstantiated rumor that he was involved with the girl who played his wife in the del Toro show. I looked her up, her name is Oriana Leman. She’s from Canada, there’s like no information about her, she only has a couple of film credits, and she deleted her Instagram a while ago. Probably stupid people who think all actors have to hook up, but it would line up with him missing someone late 2021/early 2022, and pandemic restrictions.
Babes I know I've been mostly gone the past two years and totally out of it but I was here A LOT in 2021.
AND THIS IS LIKE THE FIRST TIME I HEAR ANY OF THIS SHITE? no really the first time lol

my favorite story, about my career, my favorite actor, an excellent director, Guillermo del Toro all over it. every good thing packed into one
review;
Glover is incredible and, surprisingly understated in the role. This series so far has a lot of wonderful acting and this episode is no exception. The sets are also excellent, you feel the place is real. They stuck the ending well.
The drawback for me is that in the original story, Pickman has incredible ability to paint or draw any real thing he sees, he's a purely representational artist with difficulty tapping into creative or imaginative urges. it's addressed as his only weakness as an artist- that he needs a model for every thing he depicts. (as a surrealist/unrealist I greatly appreciate the subtle insults to realism in art in the story)
when he presents the abominable creatures in his drawings, he's congratulated and given kudos for finally finding a streak of imagination, for finally painting and drawing things of his mind, not just what he's directly got in front of him.
as the paintings and drawings become more horrifying and elaborate his friend becomes concerned. this art, this imagination, is *disturbing*. it's dark.
and this premise is turned on its head in this remake of the story. Pickman is given to us here as an imaginative talent, gifted at creativity but less so at representing pure form in realism.
this removes the base premise- that Pickman, if painting these disturbing creatures, must have
Pickman's model.
