HAPPY WOLFENOOT!
Wolfenoot takes place the day before Thanksgiving, and IMO beats the hell out of Thanksgiving. The goals are similar and there's no racist bullshit.
So what the heck is Wolfenoot?
Well, one day in New Zealand, someone's child came up with a holiday to celebrate dogs & wolves, and along with it, a story about a Great Wolf Spirit who died. The original ideas are that people give each other small gifts, and their dogs get bigger gifts; make a full moon themed cake; eat meat (if you eat meat), & be kind to each other, and appreciate dogs and wolves. Fruitables Superblend Digestive Supplement - a canned pumpkin-based puree with added vitamins and minerals

Why we like it: The meat is gently air-dried to preserve its nutritional value, and supplemented with dried chicory root (a natural prebiotic) to prime the gut. There are no artificial preservatives, coloring, or fillers --- "mixed tocopherols" are actually a combination of different sources of vitamin E, and can come from nuts, seeds, healthy oils, and leafy green vegetables like spinach. Why we decided to buy it: Good for spreading on lick mats or stuffing in rubber toys for enrichment, or even distractions while bathing/grooming or during vet visits. Might also be a good ingredient for making treats at home. This product also doesn't contain any added sugars or xylitol like many commercial peanut butters do. The NASC seal on its label indicates that the product maintains its quality and safety through regular third-party testing.
L-theanine can help to decrease anxiety by raising serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, without causing any negative side effects or overt drowsiness. Research says that L-theanine supplementation in dogs result in reduced behaviors triggered by fear, such as flight avoidance, hyper-vigilance and trembling. Awareness of non-native — often called “invasive” — species has vastly increased over the past half-century, to the point where anyone with a green conscience has heard of them and their negative impacts.
Less recognized are the benefits of non-native species — and according to Brown University biologist Dov Sax, that needs to change.
In a review article published on Thursday, Oct. 6, in Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Sax and two co-authors pointed out that most research on non-native species focuses on their negative consequences. They argued that long-standing biases against non-native species within the scientific literature have clouded the scientific process and hindered public understanding. In the new article, the authors try to shift the focus to consider the benefits of non-native species for a more balanced discussion.
“Positive impacts of non-native species are often explained as serendipitous surprises — the sort of thing that people might expect to happen every once in a while, in special circumstances,” said Sax, a professor of environment and society, and of ecology, evolution and organismal biology. “Our new paper argues that the positive impacts of non-native species are neither unexpected nor rare, but instead common, important and often of large magnitude.”
Sax — who is affiliated with the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society — said the study borrows from a recent framework that examines the benefits of biodiversity for people and nature and applies it to non-native species, showing the diverse, frequent and important ways that non-native species provide positive value for people and nature.
“We want to provide a framework for the way that scientists can think about non-native species constructively going forward and explicitly document their benefits,” Sax said. “It’s only then that we’ll be able to accurately and fully compare and contrast them in order to perform the kind of cost-benefit analyses that can be truly helpful in making policy decisions.”
The authors, who include Martin Schlaepfer from the University of Geneva and Julian Olden from the University of Washington, recognized that some non-native species, such as introduced pathogens and agricultural pests, involve indisputably large net costs. But they noted that most domesticated species, including food like wheat and tomatoes, fibers such as cotton and wool, and pets including dogs and goldfish, provide large net benefits to human societies. They focused their review on species that are not directly managed by people — so-called “wild” or “naturalized” species, noting that many of these simultaneously provide both costs and benefits for people and nature.

As one example of a non-native species with underappreciated benefits, Sax cited the earthworm. While they can negatively change forest ecosystems, Sax said that earthworms can also augment organic agriculture: Some research has shown that when earthworms are present, there can be a 25% increase in agricultural productivity. The resulting decrease in food cost and increased ability to feed people is a direct economic benefit, Sax said.
Sax also extolled the unexpected benefits of another non-native species — brown trout. Looking at New Zealand as an example, he said most of the non-native species that have invaded the country have negative consequences, and residents therefore focus on eradicating them. Yet the nation has effectively embraced brown trout, Sax said: New Zealanders value the nutritional benefits of eating brown trout and the recreational benefits of fishing brown trout so much that they’ve established new environmental regulations to protect the species within their waters.
The framework the authors used to considered non-native species describes a comprehensive range of nature-based values, including intrinsic, instrumental and relational values.
“We posit that this framework provides a useful topology for considering the diverse array of ways that non-natives provide value and use this framework here to illustrate representative, but not exhaustive, examples of these values from diverse ecosystems and regions,” they wrote.
The authors advocate using the same framework often used to talk about the benefits of nature, especially the benefit of biodiversity, and apply that to non-native species. “How people relate to nature, to the intrinsic value of nature, to the ecosystem services, to the provisioning of resources — these are all things that we value in native species, and there are also ways to see that non-native species are contributing to these benefits, too,” Sax said. “It’s not like there’s some inherent trade-off: Non-natives aren’t the boogie man.”
For example, non-native species can be a leading cause of species extinctions, but also contribute, through their own migration, to regional biodiversity; they can reduce certain ecosystem functions, such as water clarity, while increasing others, such as erosion control; they can provide new resources, such as recreational hunting and fishing opportunities.
Yet because of the research bias against non-native species that focuses on threats and harm, Sax said that the net consequences of most non-native species are less certain. That is why he and his co-authors call for a re-evaluation of non-native species, informed by data.
“We argue that long-standing biases against non-native species within the literature have clouded the scientific process and hampered policy advances and sound public understanding,” they wrote. “Future research should consider both costs and benefits of non-native species.”

I promise this is a good-faith question: it’s something I’ve been grappling with for quite some time.
I (think I) agree with you that domestication is pretty much unilaterally wrong, and that no species should be further domesticated, and no current domesticated animals got that way without cruelty.
And I used to be anti-domestication of any kind, and also agreed with the “eventually domesticated animals, be they for food or labour or companionship, will just die out”… but lately I’ve been thinking that that is cruel and unjust and also just… has the same issues with biological control/“playing god” that domestication does.
if we brought a species into existence and forced it to evolve in a way that it can’t exist without human stewardship anymore, do we then still have the right to withdraw the stewardship and let that (sub)/species disappear? is it not more complex than that? it’s kind of like, your mess, now you have to deal with it as ethically as possible. you made these animals exist in relation to you, you can’t just disappear their existence because you realised the actions of your ancestors was unethical.
idk. I’m very confused and I dwell on this exceedingly often. personally it makes no difference to me/my impact — I would never own a pet — but I really, really want to get to the fundamental truth of this.
they'd still exist. street dogs, wild dogs would exist, cats will certainly always exist, they're everywhere. but they'd exist outside of our homes, not controlled or bred by us. like i mentioned before, turkey, and mena nations are an excellent examples. cats have roamed the land there for thousands of years. they get shelter to stay in the nooks and crannies of human made societies, and things like water, protection if they're ill or injured, etc. and the biggest reason; food. not food we give them, but pests. rodents. so, we wouldn't have to feed them for them to be safe and healthy. they protect our food, and get to eat in the process. this is a symbiotic relationship. many farmers still have it, allowing feral cats to roam around and sleep in their barns because they kill rodents that destroy crops.
this a natural and equal relationship. although it'd be more complicated in nations where pets were introduced, and have caused devastation to natural ecosystems, like my country of new zealand. it would be much better for us to try and humanely phase out cats here completely or as much as we can through desexed. we have big capture, desex, and release programmes here. multiple of our unique bird species have gone exist forever because of cats and dogs, and literally HUNDREDS more are at risk, endangered, or critical because of introduced carnivores. so, some places need pets gone.
phasing our cats and dogs as pets doesn't mean they won't exist. they'll always exist, as they have in their nations of origin. they just wouldn't be pets. your playing god argument doesn't make sense when the most "ethical" thing would be to...just stop breeding. and because cats and dogs are uncontrollable in regards to mating, desexing is the best method. it in fact prevents major suffering because cats and dogs in mating season are highly aggressive and it's when most fights and injuries occur. there is risk of cancers to those reproductive organs because since we keep them in our houses, they live longer and generally get more chronic and long term diseases. another thing is that because they're introduced to nations where they don't struggle and have little competition, as well as major protection from humans because "awww, cute", they breed at such high levels that there is not enough resources for them and mass amounts die when the resources are low in the wild. this is the natural predator-prey cycle, but because of our influence on cats and dogs and their general survive and thriving in urban areas, this occurs on much bigger scales than it would for other feral animals, who have less babies that survive to adulthood, that live shorter lives so don't consume so much resources, etc. by allowing mass populations by both pet ownership, lack of desexing, and introduction into countries with no competition, we've created situations of mass suffering of these animals. countless are put down every day because it's considered kinder than keeping them on the street ridden with disease and injuries, but there's not enough human homes to take them in.
what you are sad for is POTENTIAL, FUTURE, cats and dogs. ones that don't exist. cats and dogs don't comprehend the future, their descendants, the gravity of having kids, they don't care. they want food, social affection, shelter, and comfort. that's it. they don't care about "well, humans created me as a breed so that means i should keep existing". they have no god, no beliefs in what they are or should be. that's you projecting existentialism onto them. breeds are not species, they are human altered genes to change superficial structures and features. there's a reason why dogs can have offspring with wolves. breeds look very different, but genetically they are near identical, and so the only thing lost if the breed no longer exists is what self concerned human pleasure one derives from it. so, we give the living ones the best life we can, while undoing the damage we've done, and not participating in the selfish act of domestication and viewing them as tools or something beneath us that we can use to benefit us in some way, even if for emotional gratification.
but, it's just a lot simpler than that; if we stop breeding and desex all pets, which is the vegan view as we have no right to breed or continue this cycle and as animals do not have the capacity to understand that the current situation is not ethical from a human point of view, we have to do the facilitation through desexing. then the end result can only be that pets do not exist anymore, only strays. and in places where those pets cause major damage and aren't naturally supposed to be there, those strays are then adopted if they're able to, and go through the same process until there's few or none left. in countries of origin, the exist in the world as they always have, as wary but willing to trade allies.

Surprisingly a lot of my favorite childhood snacks are still around; but one that sadly got discontinued as soon as I first learned about it in first grade was a Japanese brand of chips called E-Aji. I was crazy for those, and I loved that they even came with dips.

That just doesn’t sound right to me. I know a lot of young people (me included, lol) make jokes about selling a kidney to get concert tickets or whatever, but at the end of the day I just don’t think this is something very sustainable. I’m alright with the option of having your organs donated at most.
When's the last time you had to refrain from telling someone I told you so?
Cooper is having a bit of a diarrhea issue today and I just know it’s came from overeating c/o my mom. I’ve kept telling her to calm the fuck down when it comes to the servings and she never listened, so today she has had to deal with the dog vomiting and poop that’s on the soft side.

Ok this was definitely my fault, but during my heartbroken and hung up era (lol) I remember going through my ex’s account after we broke up just so I can see what she had been up to. I saw a tweet where she was talking about how happy she finally was, so...you can just imagine how that went down for me.
I entered into another spiral, but it was also one of those moments that flicked a switch inside of me, telling me to just move the fuck on. I did shortly after. It’s a memory I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but I’m also grateful for it to some extent.
What's something most people don't worry about but probably should?
House fires. It’s something I’ve always been paranoid about.
Do you use movie quotes often?
Almost never.
What are some of your favorite idioms/sayings?
I don’t really find myself using a lot of idioms these days.
Will children today have better or worse lives than their parents, and why?
I want to say better. It seems as though today’s generation of parents make smarter decisions, are more politically aware, are more welcoming in terms of differences in society, etc. and I believe all of those can make for good influences on kids.
When was the last time you had a new lease on life?
Probably the start of 2021 when I started to proactively bring in good change for myself and my mental health and my life in general.
What's the craziest conversation you've overheard?
As much as I enjoy getting gossip from my friends, I don’t actually eavesdrop myself lol. I mute people out when I’m in public.
What are some goals that humanity is not focused enough on achieving?
Eliminating racial discrimination.
If you were capable of possessing people, what would you make them do?
I don’t even want to start thinking about this.
What's the most ironic thing you've seen happen?
Seeing people be crazy religious lunatics while still advocating for thieves and creeps in public office.
Which charitable cause is most deserving of money?
I think it differs for everyone since we all have our own advocacies. Personally I’d keep donating to animal shelters or any animal-related NGO.

Do you live in the same hometown as where you were born?
No, I haven’t lived in Manila in over 20 years. Fortunately.

I drove to and from home. My university wasn’t too far away that I needed to move into a dorm.
How long before you tell someone that enough is enough?
Depends on the person. I give most people a chance or two; but for people I view more important/want to keep in life I’d pretty much act like a doormat for them.
Do you want to get married one day? Why or why not?
It would be nice to, but it’s the kind of thing where I’d be fine whether I end up getting married or not. It’s definitely not a priority right now.
Do you file your own taxes or have an accountant do it?
My company does it for me.
How often do you get your haircut?
Just once a year. I’m not very hands-on when it comes to my hair.

No preference; I just go with whatever stock we happen to have at home.

Eh, not really. I barely use emojis with friends, but I would insert one or two when I’m texting someone for work purposes.

I don’t turn down offers to hang out.

Patterned.

Honestly? Fireworks.

Just sometimes. I don’t have to have them.

Yeah. It’s been a while since I did the groceries with my family but I would definitely still hop on the back of a shopping cart and zoom through the aisles at 23 hahaha.
Does everything you buy have to be organic?
No. Things are different here and most of us can’t really afford to go that extra mile to make sure everything we get is organic or gluten-free or vegan or whatever. Those products aren’t the most accessible here to begin with.
Do you support more small businesses or chain restaurants/stores?
I think I give an equal amount of support. Sometimes I’ll order a meal from small businesses on IG; other times I’ll, say, get a specific craving I can only get from a big chain.
Starbucks, Tim Horton's, or Dunkin' Donuts?
Literally I love all of these.

No.

Yes and no. It depends of the situation. But I would say more yes than no. When I’m having a rough time, nobody knows it cause I tend to crack jokes and be funnier than ever. When I’m happy, I usually keep my happiness to myself and act as neutral as I can be. I’m afraid to be judged on the things that makes me happy. But! When I’m angry… you’ll know it just by my gaze and that’s the reason I wrote 'yes and no' lol

Peace of mind and marshmallows. Oh! And season 2 of The Bad Batch.

The total opposite of me. I’m chaos… she’s nothing but chaotic. Every thing in her life is organized: her mind, her school path, her schedule. She’s very simple: always wearing plain clothes without any designs or flashy colors. She is most of the time very neutral, it’s hard to know what’s in her mind. SHE IS SO FUNNY!!! Like… the first time I talked to her I thought she was boring… but once I got to know her better… damn! the girl is crazy!!! Always chill, always relax. For her, life is a smooth ride and she helps me a lot to calm down when my mind goes on anxiety mode. Oh! And she’s an artist… A FREAKING GOOD PAINTER. I love her and I miss her a lot since I’ve moved away. 😔
