Caring for Your 2.5-Year-Old Pup: Learning More About the Ingredients in Organic Puppy Food
Your 2.5-year-old pup deserves the best nutrition to grow strong and thrive. If you've chosen organic puppy food, you're on the right track to providing your furry friend with high-quality ingredients. In this guide, we'll delve into the world of Organic dog food New Zealand and reveal the essential ingredients that should be on your radar. From protein sources to healthy carbohydrates, we'll explore it all. Get ready to learn how to keep your pup happy, healthy, and full of vitality.
1. Protein Powerhouse: The Role of Quality Meat
The first and most vital ingredient in organic puppy food is quality protein. Look for whole, named meat sources such as chicken, beef, or lamb. These ingredients offer essential amino acids necessary for muscle development, energy, and overall health. Organic puppy food should contain a substantial percentage of protein, often around 20-30%.
2. Essential Fats: A Source of Healthy Omegas
Healthy fats are crucial for your pup's development. Organic dog food New Zealand should contain sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, such as flaxseed or fish oil. These fats support a shiny coat, healthy skin, and brain development.
3. Fruit and Veggie Medley: Nutrient-Rich Plant Ingredients
Fruits and vegetables like sweet potatoes, peas, and blueberries not only add flavor but also provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These ingredients boost your pup's immune system and overall well-being.
4. No Nasty Additives: Artificial Ingredients to Avoid
When selecting organic puppy food, ensure it's free from artificial additives, including colors, flavors, and preservatives. Organic options prioritize natural ingredients and avoid synthetic additives that can be harmful to your pup's health.
5. The Power of Probiotics: Digestive Health
Some Healthy puppy food NZ include probiotics like Lactobacillus acidophilus, which promote good bacteria in your pup's digestive system. This can aid in better nutrient absorption and less gastrointestinal upset.
6. No Allergen Hazards: Grain-Free or Limited Ingredients
If your pup has allergies or sensitivities, consider grain-free or limited-ingredient options. These formulations exclude common allergens like soy, dairy, or wheat, making them suitable for pups with specific dietary needs.
7. Real Meat as the First Ingredient: Read the Label
One of the best ways to ensure your pup is getting top-notch nutrition is to check the label. A reputable Organic dog food New Zealand should list a quality meat source as the first ingredient, indicating that the food is protein-rich.
8. Organic Certification: The Gold Standard
For true organic puppy food, look for products with organic certifications. These certifications ensure that the ingredients used are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Conclusion
Selecting the right organic puppy food for your 2.5-year-old pup is an essential part of ensuring their health and well-being. Keep a close eye on the ingredients, with a focus on quality protein, wholesome carbohydrates, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables, and probiotics for digestive health. Avoid artificial additives, and consider your pup's dietary needs. Visit our site to order online dog food In New Zealand.

COVID-19 / Ukraine Crisis - Impact Analysis:
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the supply chain of the animal feed industry. The different animal nutrition food items, vitamins and medicines including pet pharmaceuticals were out of stock.
The Russia-Ukraine war has impacted the supply chain and resulted in high input prices. In the short term, rising product prices in the domestic market contributed to increased earnings for producers.
Key Takeaways:
Dominance of North America Region
Geographically, North America led the Pet Food Market with a 37.3% share of the overall market in 2022. This is due to the increasing innovation by pet food manufacturers and rising pet adoption in the region. In 2020, as per American Pet Products Association National Pet Owners Survey, 63 million households or 74.6% of all households have dogs as pets.
Canned Food Segment holds the largest market share
According to the Pet Food Market forecast, the Canned Food Segment held the largest Pet Food Market revenue of $18 billion in 2022. The segment is estimated to grow at the fastest CAGR of 9.5% during the period 2023-2030. This is due to increasing consumer desire for feeding their pets nutritional food rich in vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber and other elements that are crucial to a balanced diet.
Premade Multi-layered Pouches Segment is anticipated to grow faster
As per the Pet Food Market analysis, the Premade Multi-layered Pouches segment is estimated to grow at the fastest CAGR of 9.8% during the forecast period 2023-2030. It is due to the durable structure, puncture-resistance protection and proper closures for pet food products, driving the segment growth.
Inquiry Before Buying
Increasing innovation by pet food manufacturers
The major competitors in the market are focusing on the launch of a number of pet food products to meet the needs of different types of animals that belong to different age groups. This is anticipated to fuel the expansion of the pet food industry. For instance, In November 2020, Nestle Purina introduced pet animal food that builds on alternative proteins to make better use of global resources. The range includes insects and plant proteins from millet and fava beans.
Rising health awareness among customers toward the organic product for pets
Customers are now more aware of the ingredients in their pet food. The market for organic pet food is increasing rapidly as a result of pet owners' growing attention to the health and welfare of their pets. The increasing number of health problems affecting pets has influenced pet owners to choose organic pet food over conventional options. These factors are contributing to the key Pet Food Market trends during the forecast period. In 2020, organic pet food consumption was worth $22 billion.
Schedule a Call
Imposition of strict regulations hamper market growth
Pet food comes with some of the strictest regulations out there, especially in western markets. Pet animal products are strictly examined in developed markets at every stage from the ingredients used in food preparation to their sales and marketing. The high stringency involved with commercialization is one of the major factors hampering the growth of the pet food industry.

PET CLUB HAUL - Product Reviews & Nutritional Considerations
Pet Club has been one of our go-to local pet stores in the Bay Area for a few years now. We like going here because we tend to find lots of food/treats at reduced pricing, and lots of toys (Blanca's fave) for less than $15. They also have self-service pet wash stations at their Emeryville and Santa Rosa locations!
You can find coupons and more info on their website: https://www.petclubstores.com
Here are some good finds from the other day, some of which we already purchase pretty regularly and others that just seemed worth a try ---
Fruitables Superblend Digestive Supplement - a canned pumpkin-based puree with added vitamins and minerals Normal retail price is usually ~$7 per can, but we bought it from Pet Club for $5.49 per can Ingredients: Pumpkin, Apple Pomace, Spinach, Tomato Pomace, Choline Chloride, Ginger, Calcium Carbonate, Cinnamon, Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5) Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Folic Acid (Vitamin B9), Vitamin B12 Supplement. Why we like it: Helps to promote healthy stools and digestion.
Pumpkin is considered a "superfood" for pets because it is full of antioxidants - it is a source of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as iron, potassium, and beta-carotenes. The soluble fibre content in pumpkin aids in firming stools by absorbing water as it passes through the GI tract, and also acts as a prebiotic to support the presence of healthy gut bacteria.
The Fruitables Superblend "Weight Loss" formula also contains ground oatmeal and inulin to help dogs and cats feel more full and enhance bowel movement - it's good for pets that would benefit from a low-calorie/high-fiber diet, i.e. patients who are obese or need to lose weight, or have diabetes, chronic/severe constipation, hyperlipidemia, liver/galbladder disease, IBD or lymphoma, etc. This product's efficacy has actually been clinically proven through feeding trials done at Texas A&M University (here's the article - "Lipid Metabolic Alterations and Satiety with a Pumpkin-Based supplement in Obese Dogs") There is also a "Switch" version, which is just 100% pumpkin puree (no additives) - useful when transitioning diets or introducing new foods.
Fish & Venison Jerky by The Real Meat Company - made with sustainably wild-caught hoki and mackerel and free-range venison from New Zealand Normal retail price is usually $20-25 per 12 oz. bag, but we bought it at Pet Club for $16.99. Ingredients: Fish, Venison, Lamb, Dried Chicory Root, Vegetable Glycerin, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols (used as a preservative).
Why we like it: The meat is gently air-dried to preserve its nutritional value, and supplemented with dried chicory root (a natural prebiotic) to prime the gut. There are no artificial preservatives, coloring, or fillers --- "mixed tocopherols" are actually a combination of different sources of vitamin E, and can come from nuts, seeds, healthy oils, and leafy green vegetables like spinach. Also, the vegetable glycerin used in their products are indeed vegetable-based, with Kosher certification, refined to meet USP grade - meaning that the glycerin is naturally extracted with low vapour pressure, low toxicity, and low flammability to reach high purity levels. In addition, Blanca's current diet mainly consists of venison and fish as protein sources...
Venison/deer meat is low in fat, but rich in protein, and loaded with iron, phosphorus, zinc, and B vitamins that help support healthy metabolism and red blood cell production, and boost energy. It is also considered a novel protein, which makes it less likely to cause allergic reactions in pets with food sensitivities or inflammatory bowel disease.
Fish like hoki and mackerel are packed with essential omega-3 fatty acids that contribute to pets' overall health by improving the body's inflammatory response, easing pain and swelling of the skin, organs, and joints. Moreover, the wild-caught fish are sourced from certified sustainable fish populations in New Zealand that strive for the highest standards in reducing mercury contamination.
"Joey's Favorite" Salmon Treats by Dr. Marty - 100% real freeze-dried salmon bits Normal retail price is usually $20-26 per 4 oz. bag, but we bought it from Pet Club for $16.99 Ingredients: Salmon. Why we like it: Only one single ingredient, and since it is freeze dried, it still contains a good portion of its nutritional content. They're good to serve as treats or pour as meal toppers.
Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids that help support skin and coat health, cognitive function, and improve mobility in dogs with joint or inflammatory diseases.
Lickable Actives Calming Peanut Butter by Green Coast Pet - peanut butter supplemented with L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in green tea leaves that eases stress-related behaviors
Normal retail price is usually $20 per jar, but we bought it at Pet Club for $15.99 Ingredients: Ground peanuts, L-Theanine.
Why we decided to buy it: Good for spreading on lick mats or stuffing in rubber toys for enrichment, or even distractions while bathing/grooming or during vet visits. Might also be a good ingredient for making treats at home. This product also doesn't contain any added sugars or xylitol like many commercial peanut butters do. The NASC seal on its label indicates that the product maintains its quality and safety through regular third-party testing.
L-theanine can help to decrease anxiety by raising serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, without causing any negative side effects or overt drowsiness. Research says that L-theanine supplementation in dogs result in reduced behaviors triggered by fear, such as flight avoidance, hyper-vigilance and trembling. There was a study done in 2010 to examine the effects of L-theanine on dogs with noise phobia undergoing behavioral therapy - those that received L-theanine tablets consistently over a ~2-month period tended to exhibit less panting, drooling, lip licking, yawning, vocalizing, attention-seeking from owners, and other compulsive behaviors (here's the article - "Effectiveness of L-theanine and behavioral therapy in the treatment of noise phobias in dogs ").
Although this next product isn't food, it caught my eye because Blanca was due for a bath. She always tends to form some redness/irritation on her chest/upper abdomen area from laying on the ground and wearing her harness.
CannaLove Medicated Antimicrobial Shampoo - a safe and gentle solution to heal hot spots and skin irritations; controls dry, itchy and flaky skin caused by seborrhea or non-specific dermatitis
Normal retail price is usually $20 per bottle, but we bought it at Pet Club for $18.99 Ingredients: Water, Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, Disodium cocoamphodiacetate, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Cocamidopropyl amine oxide, Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, Cannabis sativa (Hemp) seed extract, Urea, Honey, Quil/aja saponaria (Soapbark) bark extract, Chamomilla recutita flower extract, Urtica dioica (Nettle) extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) leaf extract, Gaultheria procumbens (Wintergreen) leaf extract, Humulus lupulus (Hops) extract, Lawsonia inermis (Henna) leaf extract, Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) extract, Salvia officinalis (Sage) extract, Benzalkonium chloride. Why we bought it: Hypoallergenic shampoo designed to eliminate ringworm and topical parasitic infections, yet safe to be used daily. It's hemp-infused and pH balanced to be ideal for all fur types. The product has been third-party tested, and actually has a QR code on each bottle that takes you directly to detailed results of every batch test.

Understanding Grain-Free Dog Food: When and Why It's Recommended by Veterinarians
Grain-free dog food has gained popularity in recent years, with many pet owners considering it a healthier option for their furry friends. But when and why do veterinarians suggest Best dog food in New Zealand? In this blog, we'll explore the situations in which veterinarians might recommend grain-free dog food and the potential benefits and risks associated with this dietary choice.
When is Grain-Free Dog Food Recommended by Veterinarians?
1. Food Allergies: One common reason veterinarians suggest grain-free food is if a dog has food allergies or sensitivities. Some dogs may develop allergies to grains like wheat, corn, or soy, leading to skin issues, digestive problems, or chronic ear infections. Switching to a grain-free diet cures the problem.
2. Digestive Issues: Dogs with digestive issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), may benefit from a grain-free diet. Grains can be harder for some dogs to digest, and removing them from the diet can reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
3. Weight Management: Grain-free Best dog food in New Zealand can also be recommended for weight management. Some grain-free formulas have higher protein content, which can help dogs feel full longer, potentially aiding in weight loss or maintenance when combined with an appropriate feeding plan.
Potential Benefits of Grain-Free Dog Food:
1. Reduced Allergenicity: Eliminating grains can decrease the likelihood of allergic reactions in dogs with grain sensitivities or allergies, leading to healthier skin and coat.
2. Improved Digestion: For dogs with digestive problems, grain-free options may lead to less bloating, gas, and diarrhea, making mealtime more comfortable.
3. Weight Control: High-protein Organic dog food new Zealand can help dogs maintain or lose weight more effectively.
Potential Risks and Considerations:
1. Nutritional Balance: When choosing a grain-free food, it's crucial to ensure it provides a well-balanced diet with essential nutrients. Some grain-free diets may lack certain nutrients, so consulting with a veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist is advisable.
2. Cost: Grain-free dog food can be more expensive than traditional options, so budget considerations may come into play.
Conclusion:
While grain-free dog food can be beneficial in specific situations, it's essential to consult with a veterinarian before making any dietary changes for your furry companion. Veterinarians recommend grain-free food primarily for dogs with allergies, digestive issues, or weight management needs.

SOURCING MATTERS! When the product you start with is compromised, the final product will be compromised, either by the bacteria already present within it, or by the kill step.
That’s one reason why quality ingredient sourcing is SO important! When you start with a base of quality food, the end result is much more likely to be quality as well. Animals fed species-appropriate diets, allowed to roam outside, and slaughtered humanely produce a quality of meat that is spectacularly above anything that a mass-meat supplier can provide.
Know your source! If you are unfamiliar with your pet food’s sourcing, start paying attention. Companies that are proud of the quality of their ingredients will be very transparent about it. The more information you can easily access, the higher quality the sourcing will likely be. If you have to dig, the chances of quality sourcing are quite low.

HAPPY WOLFENOOT!
Wolfenoot takes place the day before Thanksgiving, and IMO beats the hell out of Thanksgiving. The goals are similar and there's no racist bullshit.
So what the heck is Wolfenoot?
Well, one day in New Zealand, someone's child came up with a holiday to celebrate dogs & wolves, and along with it, a story about a Great Wolf Spirit who died. The original ideas are that people give each other small gifts, and their dogs get bigger gifts; make a full moon themed cake; eat meat (if you eat meat), & be kind to each other, and appreciate dogs and wolves. The website strongly recommends making donations to dog rescues or wolf organizations. https://www.wolfenoot.com/about
I personally implement this as a Thanksgiving-like holiday to pack bond, eat food, and promote donations to wolf charities :) This holiday is great if you are passionate about wildlife conservation!
Eat well, and let your wolf voice out! Happy Wolfenoot!
I'd like to vouch for the Endangered Wolf Center, based in MO, who do very similar work to the much more famous & funded NY Wolf Center! Perhaps adopt one of their wolves? https://www.endangeredwolfcenter.org/

What are some foods from your childhood that you miss? Surprisingly a lot of my favorite childhood snacks are still around; but one that sadly got discontinued as soon as I first learned about it in first grade was a Japanese brand of chips called E-Aji. I was crazy for those, and I loved that they even came with dips.
Which app on your phone do you use the most? Either Facebook or Messenger.
Do you know of anyone who went into labor at the baby shower? No. I don’t even know anyone who’s held a baby shower.
When's the last time you did a hand game with someone? (ie: Mary Mack) I’m not sure. Maybe a year or two ago.
How old is your oldest living relative? I think my great-grandparent from my dad’s side is still alive; she’d have to be over 90 now.
What was the worst part about being a kid? Having to be stuck around kids who may not be raised as properly and may end up teasing, bullying, or being a general pain in the ass towards you – and still getting away with it because you’re both kids.
What's the best part about being an adult? The independence.
How many hours of sleep do you need in order to function successfully? Around 6 or 7. 5 is fine too I guess, but I might be cranky for a while.
What are two foods that are supposed to taste weird together, but you like? ...ugh, I’m blanking out at the moment.
What is your favorite kind of dip? I don’t have a preference; I like dips in general and am always open to trying new/unfamiliar flavors.
Do you know anyone who was not born in a hospital, unexpectedly? Nope. As far as I know everyone I know had been born in the hospital.
Does anyone you know have dual citizenship to live in multiple countries? Probably.
Do you still have a landline phone/phone number? Yeah, we keep it around for older relatives who don’t have cellphones.
Do you know anyone who lives in the Southern Hemisphere? Yeah we have a number of relatives who have settled in Australia and New Zealand.
What are some things from childhood that you still do today? Tinker around with anything that has buttons or knobs or anything I can toy with.
Name a fad that was popular when you were growing up, that you miss. I don’t miss any fads.
Have you ever gotten to milk a cow or a goat? Never yet.
Have you ever taken a gymnastics class before? I mean we were given a few gymnastics-related lessons in our PE classes, like we were taught the basics of walking on a beam, but I’ve never taken a full-on gymnastics class.
What's the worst part about being an adult? All the boring but required bills.
What was the best part about being a kid? The much shorter and simpler list of things to worry about.
--
Were you ever force-fed as a child? No.
What's the worst thing you could hear before going under anesthesia? Idk, probably someone realizing at the last second that they fucked up the dosage or whatever.
What's the last thing you rolled your eyes about? Clients and media messaging me on Viber and following up on various stuff despite my profile picture which clearly and loudly states I’M ON LEAVE.
Should kidneys or other organs be able to be bought and sold? That just doesn’t sound right to me. I know a lot of young people (me included, lol) make jokes about selling a kidney to get concert tickets or whatever, but at the end of the day I just don’t think this is something very sustainable. I’m alright with the option of having your organs donated at most.
When's the last time you had to refrain from telling someone I told you so? Cooper is having a bit of a diarrhea issue today and I just know it’s came from overeating c/o my mom. I’ve kept telling her to calm the fuck down when it comes to the servings and she never listened, so today she has had to deal with the dog vomiting and poop that’s on the soft side.
What's one of your favorite riddles? I’m not a big fan of riddles.
What is one of your most important rules when going on a date? I don’t really go on dates, but I imagine I’d be a bit conservative. No kissing or hand-holding or anything, especially if I don’t know them all that well yet.
Do you judge books by their covers? (actual books) Yes, sometimes.
What unethical experiment would have the biggest positive impact on society? I don’t understand how this would come to life if it were already unethical to begin with.
What did you find while snooping, that you really wish you hadn't? Ok this was definitely my fault, but during my heartbroken and hung up era (lol) I remember going through my ex’s account after we broke up just so I can see what she had been up to. I saw a tweet where she was talking about how happy she finally was, so...you can just imagine how that went down for me.
I entered into another spiral, but it was also one of those moments that flicked a switch inside of me, telling me to just move the fuck on. I did shortly after. It’s a memory I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but I’m also grateful for it to some extent.
What's something most people don't worry about but probably should? House fires. It’s something I’ve always been paranoid about.
Do you use movie quotes often? Almost never.
What are some of your favorite idioms/sayings? I don’t really find myself using a lot of idioms these days.
Will children today have better or worse lives than their parents, and why? I want to say better. It seems as though today’s generation of parents make smarter decisions, are more politically aware, are more welcoming in terms of differences in society, etc. and I believe all of those can make for good influences on kids.
When was the last time you had a new lease on life? Probably the start of 2021 when I started to proactively bring in good change for myself and my mental health and my life in general.
What's the craziest conversation you've overheard? As much as I enjoy getting gossip from my friends, I don’t actually eavesdrop myself lol. I mute people out when I’m in public.
What are some goals that humanity is not focused enough on achieving? Eliminating racial discrimination.
If you were capable of possessing people, what would you make them do? I don’t even want to start thinking about this.
What's the most ironic thing you've seen happen? Seeing people be crazy religious lunatics while still advocating for thieves and creeps in public office.
Which charitable cause is most deserving of money? I think it differs for everyone since we all have our own advocacies. Personally I’d keep donating to animal shelters or any animal-related NGO.
--
Do you live in the same hometown as where you were born? No, I haven’t lived in Manila in over 20 years. Fortunately.
Did you dorm at college or commute from home? I drove to and from home. My university wasn’t too far away that I needed to move into a dorm.
How long before you tell someone that enough is enough? Depends on the person. I give most people a chance or two; but for people I view more important/want to keep in life I’d pretty much act like a doormat for them.
Do you want to get married one day? Why or why not? It would be nice to, but it’s the kind of thing where I’d be fine whether I end up getting married or not. It’s definitely not a priority right now.
Do you file your own taxes or have an accountant do it? My company does it for me.
How often do you get your haircut? Just once a year. I’m not very hands-on when it comes to my hair.
Do you prefer the thin blue and white masks, or decorative ones? No preference; I just go with whatever stock we happen to have at home.
Have you ever witnessed someone have a seizure before? No.
Are you someone who puts a decent amount of emojis in their texts? Eh, not really. I barely use emojis with friends, but I would insert one or two when I’m texting someone for work purposes.
What was the last excuse you used when you didn't want to hang out? I don’t turn down offers to hang out.
Do you own more solid colored socks or patterned socks? Patterned.
What is something that still excites you as though you were 5 years old? Honestly? Fireworks.
Tennis, Ping-Pong, or Badminton? Table tennis!
Do you buy seasonal/limited edition treats for yourself? Just sometimes. I don’t have to have them.
Have you ever rode on the back of a shopping cart, or a Home Depot dolly? Yeah. It’s been a while since I did the groceries with my family but I would definitely still hop on the back of a shopping cart and zoom through the aisles at 23 hahaha.
Does everything you buy have to be organic? No. Things are different here and most of us can’t really afford to go that extra mile to make sure everything we get is organic or gluten-free or vegan or whatever. Those products aren’t the most accessible here to begin with.
Do you support more small businesses or chain restaurants/stores? I think I give an equal amount of support. Sometimes I’ll order a meal from small businesses on IG; other times I’ll, say, get a specific craving I can only get from a big chain.
Starbucks, Tim Horton's, or Dunkin' Donuts? Literally I love all of these.
Have you ever been crowned king or queen at a school dance? No.
Do you have conversations with your pets or do voices for them? Sure.

Within the larger context of settler colonial life-world re-ordering, the longfin eel's very athwartness and awkwardness insist that there is something else to see here, that there are other laws here to sense. [...] In no small part, the fact that the longfin eel is currently under the spotlight of legal process is a consequence of media reports which surfaced in mid-2012 claiming that this endemic species was knowingly being used in the commercial production of dog food. [...] In the news media, the dog food controversy was decried as ‘a national shame’. […] [C]ommunications from the MPI have centred on the catchphrase ‘sustainable management’, suggesting that the nature of the crisis is a public relations (PR) one as much as anything. Principally, what appears to be at stake for the New Zealand government is the continuing international marketability of New Zealand [...]. This is to say that the eel itself seems largely incidental as a flashpoint: the national brand is what is being ‘sustained’ (packaged for consumption, protected from the shame of bad publicity). […] According to the logic of a settler sensible order, the everyday farm- and city-scapes of this country are construed as ‘move along’ spaces. What the eel reveals, however, is that many of these places are nothing other or less than ruined waterscapes. [...] Because water is a life-giving element, and because it is an atmosphere or aqua-sphere – within which organisms live and which they breathe – its damage and defilement ripple outwards. It serves as a conduit not only for biochemical substances but also for metaphysical and epistemological concerns and values. Aotearoa/New Zealand possesses a turbulent history of re-ordering activities centred on water and waterways. Again, the longfin eel is caught up in this, troubling seemingly straightforward settler categories and revealing the shortcomings of settler life-world management regimes:
1. Eels serve as a reminder that no clear-cut or hierarchical distinctions can be posited between people and places, actors and environments. Waterways – in the form of interconnected swamp, lake and river systems – are fundamental to ‘eel culture’. A waterway is at once a fishery, a taonga, a source of identity and mana (prestige, status and influence), a carrier of tribal history, an expression of whakapapa or genealogy, a source of material sustenance and spiritual wellbeing, a symbol of the custodianship of resources by and for previous and future generations, and a home for the taniwha or water creatures who guard it – and who are frequently conflated with eels in tribal lore. As the Te Ika Whenua Rivers Report emphasises, a river ‘is the people themselves […] the people belong to the rivers and the rivers belong to them’.
2. Eels point towards the arbitrary and expropriative parcelling of the environment for administrative purposes and in the interests of economic expediency. According to tribal world views, a waterway is an undivided and indivisible entity. Drawing on English common law, however, settler culture has long held that the discrete concepts of bed, bank and water apply in determining user rights to and ownership of a body of water. This environmental carve-up also manifests in the re-mapping of waterways into differentiated zones of protection. In order to complete their spawning migration, for instance, eels must leave the ‘sanctuaries’ of conservation lands and travel down through rivers where they remain open game and have to navigate hydroelectric dams and turbines.
3. Eels are prone to becoming stranded in farm drains, too, and large-scale and ongoing swamp and floodplain drainage, formally authorised in the first instance by a suite of legislation including the Public Works Act (1876) and Land Drainage Act (1893), have drastically shrunk the extent of available eel habitat since European settlement began. Eels thus reveal problems associated with the apportioning and re-making of a life-world on the basis of hard distinctions between land and water. They point towards settler investment in firm, dry ground whose calculable value resides in its farmability, settleability and saleability, and whose production is effected through the invasive modification of waterways: cutting, diverting, stop-banking, straightening and so on. They also point towards a will-to-reconstruct which eradicates watery corridors permitting passage and connectivity, and which privileges the linear geometry of cityscapes and agronomic patchwork at the same time as it rejects – as murky, mucky, chaotic and disorderly – ways of life founded on fluidity and in-between-ness.
4. Because eels are the apex predators within this country's fresh-waterways, and because they are programmed to amass significant fat reserves, they function as bio-accumulators of toxins in the environment. Eels thus serve as key indices of the declining health of the aqua-sphere, evidencing degradation such as that wrought through the spraying of herbicides in clearing land for pasture. As an article published in the New Zealand Listener in 1986 pointed out, ‘only South Vietnam has been doused with more 245-T [one of two precursor ingredients used in manufacturing Agent Orange] than is sprayed in New Zealand’. Because chemical contaminants leach directly from soils into waterways, this ‘war’, ostensibly waged against the presence of native ground cover on land that is being re-ordered for the purposes of extractive productivity, turns out to be a war against the whole world of life. The fact that downstream (as it were), eels transfer these contaminants to humans, further perverts the balance between life and death. Such ‘unmaking’ of the living world makes eels ‘risky eating’ indeed. [...]
The repeated recent [2014/2015] flooding in Aotearoa/New Zealand's second largest city in the wake of a series of severe earthquakes serves as a case-in-point [...]. Rising floodwaters have thrown up forceful and persistent reminders of the precariousness of the grounds of European habitation. Photographs such as this – of an eel crossing a busy residential street – destabilise the enterprise of settlement by revealing the presence of two worlds in one, or a prior sensible order asserting itself in contradiction to a secondarily imposed one. [...]
Pressing questions of responsibility and rights and rightfulness – of going about the place in the right kinds of ways – are raised here, not least because the longfin eel stands as an awkward reminder to settler culture that waterways are a shared moral domain of action. [...] Memory, knowledge and lawful modes of action reside in or arise within water [...] and if there is an aberration or crisis of signification here then it is not the eel's own.
