One word for you...
Where I have not gone plastic-free:
Bread box: There are no plastic-free, airtight bread boxes that I’ve been able to find and I *must have* airtight. I make my own bread in a bread machine just because I like to, and the first few loaves I made here on the humid island grew mold within three days because my old bread box was not airtight. Bread bags are more eco-friendly but aren’t airtight, and will hold the humidity. I could find no silicon boxes and also could not find silicone containers/bags that I could be sure would be big enough to hold a loaf of bread and still close completely. I’m considering a giant silicone bag I found online, for marinating meat, so if I get that I can see if a loaf will fit inside. But I haven’t pulled the trigger on that yet, buying something just to marinate meat doesn’t fall neatly into the “I really need it now” category. So I purchased a BPA-free plastic, airtight box and it seems to be working very well. It’s so airtight that I was able to store bananas in it as well and there has been no sign of fruit flies.
Suncare: I spent two days working on the porch. I was under a roof in shade the entire time but I sunburn if I stand next to a toaster, so at the end of the second day I looked like Roy Neary in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. As in the right half of my face was bright red. I wasn’t wearing sunscreen because it breaks me out. All of it. Every single sunscreen ever. They all break out my face, neck and chest within 20 minutes of application. So I did some research and learned about mineral sunscreens versus chemical sunscreens and after reading a lot of recommendations and reviews, I ordered Alba Botanica Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen. Yes the tube is plastic, but there’s probably no avoiding that. The sport cream is 45 SPF, waterproof for up to 80 minutes, vegan, free of all the chemicals that turn my face into a Marscape, biodegradable and - get this - reef safe. That’s a “gee how nice” for most people but now that I’m swimming around coral reefs, shit got real. They also make a spray-on but it’s not legal to ship aerosol cans to Hawaii, something about them exploding under pressure blah-bibby-blah. Pretty bummed about that. For those wondering, until now I’ve worn a sun visor whenever I’m outdoors but it didn’t occur to me to wear it on a covered porch. I’m sure it didn’t occur to Roy on a dark deserted highway in the middle of an Indiana night, either. LATER UPDATE: Native makes a mineral sunscreen and I thought it wasn't water resistant, but it turns out that it is, although I should not have had to dig so deep into their website to find this out. Better than getting anal probed, all things considered. The Alba sunscreen is very thick and hard to squeeze out of the tube, and you can feel it on your skin at first but you forget pretty quickly. It is completely unscented. You have to make sure to rub it in well if you don’t want to look a little weird. It showers off clean and easy and after a few days with it, not a single blemish! Our pharmacy sells some water resistant mineral sunscreens. I didn’t price them the last time I was there to compare with online ordering and they are probably reef-safe because as of January 1 of this year, suncreeens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned in Hawaii to protect the reefs. But my next purchase will be Little Hands because it is made right here in Hawaii. I have been a big believer in ‘buy local’ for many years and they are plastic-free.
Groceries: Groceries haven’t changed. I’ve been using cloth shopping and produce bags for many years, they just bloody well work better. I do buy some foods in plastic, often there just isn’t any alternative. This was true even on the mainland. The main change is that now I walk to the store more often than not. I was able to walk to almost everything I needed when I lived in Austin’s SoCo in the early aughts and I loved it, I am so so happy to be able to do that again. Knowing I’m just a pleasant stroll away also means that I only buy what I need in the immediate future. There are a few exceptions for items that sell out very soon after the weekly supply barge comes, and don’t always get restocked even then. I drive when I have to buy heavy or awkward to carry things, like a case of soda. I’ve found conflicts with grocery choices because of a weird contradiction: non-hippie products in cardboard/paper packaging versus hippie products in plastic. I first noticed this when I went to buy sugar the other day - do I get the organic non bleached sugar in the plastic bag, or the nonorganic bleached sugar in the plastic bag? It wasn’t much of a conflict in any real world sense, just something that grabbed my attention. (I went with the plastic by the way, for the organic foodstuff that was going to go into my body).
Probably the clothesline, I have no idea what the hell that thing is made of, most likely nylon. We don’t use it for everything because it’s too humid here to dry everything in a reasonable amount of time. But we use it for some things - especially towels and swim wear - and I’m glad that we have it and it saves money on electricity. Our electricity generation here on the island is likely solar but still, no need to be greedy about it. Lots of people here have clotheslines, they are a common sight I am glad to see.
Bandages: I use Wellys. Patch bamboo bandages sound great, but I am clumsy AF and so I need bandages that are going to stay on through wet and dry and everything else. Wellys are flexible fabric, latex-free bandages made in the USA, in reusable tins that you can buy refills for if you don’t want a new tin, and that create a seal around all four edges. They are a certified B Corp so even with a bit of plastic, the company is still in line with my ethics.
Makeup: I use mostly mineral makeup, because it lasts longer (no organic ingredients to breed bacteria) and many mineral brands offer smaller quantities that are more sensible for people who don’t wear it everyday, or at least don’t wear the same colors every day. On the mainland I went weeks without wearing makeup and here I’ll probably go for months, it’s just such a casual place. I might wear some when we go across to Maui for a long weekend. But there are a lot of all natural and plastic-free makeup options out there these days, I am glad to see. If I need to replace anything I will shop with them but it’s just stupid and wasteful to toss everything out and buy new. One thing I won’t compromise on is mascara, I use Thrive because it really does what it claims, and it is still a company that aligns with my ethics. Many zero-waste brands sell cake mascara and that’s a complete nope for me. I tried cake mascara in high school, when I was going through my Audrey Hepburn/Sophia Loren makeup phase and I really didn’t like it. I also tried cake eyeliner and must confess that this elder goth never ever got the hang of liquid eyeliner, Icarus winged better than I can. I gave up a long time ago, pencil me in baby. Also, I wear lipstick, the paint-on stuff that stays on through food, drink, sex and a nuclear blast. IMO, lip balms are a waste of money and do not count as ‘makeup’, unless you’re only intention is to prevent chapped lips and with a small amount of color that lasts few minutes at a time.
Hair brush: I need a new hair brush that is designed for my long fine mane because my hair is getting a lot of punishment here, between wind and swimming and so more frequent washing and lots of pulling and tugging into braids. I bounced back and forth between Ibiza (boar bristles, wood handle) and Mason Pearson (boar bristles, plastic handle), for about half an hour. I finally decided to bite the big one and invest in the Mason Pearson. It is universally reputed as the best hair brush to be had on planet Earth. The was company founded in London by a Yorkshireman named Mason Pearson (bet you didn’t see that coming) in 1885. The boar bristles are either shed bristles collected from the wild in India and China or sourced from the meat industry as they are a by-product of processing farmed boar; you may ask so I will answer and yes, I do eat boar. Mason Pearson is still owned and run by the Pearson family and the Pearson women have always played integral roles in the company. Indeed Mary Pearson was the CEO for the 20 years following the death of her husband, founder Mason, and one of their daughters ran the top floor of the factory on Old Ford Road in London for 50 years. You can purchase a brush with a handcrafted made-to-order wood handle but while I am willing to make the investment in a Mason Pearson brush, I just can’t bring myself to be so self-indulgent as to even send a price inquiry for the wood model. This is where my best friend reminds me of the lengths I went to and the price I paid to obtain a bottle of the finest Irish whiskey in the world to demonstrate that yes, I can be that self-indulgent without much convincing. I just can’t bring myself to do it with a hair brush. I purchased from Pasteur Pharmacy in NYC because they made their bones, if you will, in their early years in the 60s by catering to humans with dogs.
Bed blanket: I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a bamboo blanket/bedspread that costs in the $275 neighborhood when the dogs will be spending at least as much time on it as we will spend under it. So we went with half cotton/half bamboo for a much more reasonable price. The temps here are warm by the thermometer but the air is heavy with humidity (100% yesterday and that doesn’t necessarily mean rain), so when the fans blow it around it can be pretty damn chilly. And the dogs steal the covers.
Clothing: if I need new clothing I will consider bamboo but it’s damned expensive. I was shopping for a second bathing suit recently because I’m at the beach often enough that I need a suit to wear while the other one is drying or waiting to be laundered free of all the salt and sand that didn’t wind up in my ass or under my tits. I always thought that sand-in-uncomfortable-places was a joke, I was very wrong. I spent two hours searching for bamboo or other plant-based sustainable fabric or recycled fabric and found nothing under a hundred bucks. Nothing. Not even a thong bikini (I already have sand up my ass, I don’t need material there as well). I’m not lounging instagrammatically on Waikiki, I’m swimming in 5+ foot surf every weekend at least, so I am not willing to pay that much for a suit intended for plenty of use and punishment. I got a bikini because it will be easier to discreetly rinse most of the sand away before going back up the beach, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Vol 1.
I.
In dedication to Marie Harrison, Hunters Point environmental activist, and all indigenous peoples lost, stolen, detained, migrating, creating, thriving, resisting, loving, and protecting Earth.
II.
Our intention is to share the wisdom we have gained in this lifetime through popular education, decolonization, direct action, and our inherent willpower to heal ourselves, loved ones, relatives, and pachamama (Mother Earth) from all that we have been through and all that is to come.
III.
We are living in the Anthropocene, a geological time period marked by the altering of Earth by human activity. In recent years we have seen record-setting storms, droughts, and fires around the world. The destruction of the environment and the exploitation of resources is directly linked to the rise of global fascism. It is reaching its peak and manifesting in exploitation, oppression, and the poisoning of people and the earth. Communities of color are most affected by climate change and environmental destruction from industry. Both biodiversity and cultural diversity are rapidly being homogenized. Climate change and resource wars are displacing people around the world and fueling massive waves of immigration. Our Black and Indigenous relatives are already living in this post-apocalyptic world after having been dispossessed by colonialism in the past and at this very moment. Our ancestors knew then and we know now that the end of one world means the beginning of a new one. How can we create a world worth living in? How can we ensure that it is one that the next seven generations can survive and thrive in?
This guide was made to help navigate the modern ecological crisis. When we speak of ecology, we include people, communities, and cultures along with plants, animals and the land. Human beings are animals that are part of nature; therefore, a part of ecosystems. This zine was created on stolen Ohlone land that has been colonized three times. We recognize colonialism as an on-going act of destruction of communities and the land. It is important that we let Black, Indigenous, and Queer, Trans and Two-Spirit people (BI-QTPOC) lead us in our work towards liberation. Indigenous people around the world have been at the frontlines of the war against colonialism and continue to be as we see with our relatives in the Amazonia, Africa, West Papua, Turtle Island, and First Nations tierras. Although science and technology offer some solutions to climate change, we must take the initiative to make changes in our own lives so that our children and grandchildren will inherit a livable planet. Technological fixes only perpetuate the capitalist system that has wreaked havoc on our planet. The only true solution to climate change is revolution.
“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.” - Assata Shakur
IV.
Indigenous Existence as Anti-Colonial, Anti-Fascist Resistance:
We’d like to acknowledge that global Indigenous communities have and continue to be the agents of cultivating and preserving “theory” and “analysis” when it comes to protecting the earth and do not see their existence as mutually exclusive from it.
“We are not defending nature. We are nature defending itself!”

V.
Theories to help us understand our current situation and how to strategize:
Ecology is the study of the relationship between different organisms in an ecosystem. A fundamental aspect of ecology is the interconnectedness of all life.
Ecofeminism recognizes the connection between the domination of nature and the domination of humans.
Ecowomanism builds upon black feminism, ecofeminism, and environmentalism. Ecowomanism is based upon the intersectionality of oppression, including social injustices and ecological injustices. It challenges the whitewashing of environmentalism and acknowledges the contributions of women of African descent and women of color to the environmental movement.
“Ecowomanism is discourse, dialogue, a conversation that centers the voices, experiences, and sociological perspectives of women of African descent and women of color on the environment.” – Rev. Dr. Melanie L. Harris
Indigenous Anarchism is malleable, embraces change, and explores what survivance looks like as remnants of genocide. Because it identifies colonialism as the root cause of the daunting state of things it does not seek to include coerced and collaborative worldviews. How do we manifest our ungovernable force of nature? This definition was crowdsourced at the Indigenous Anarchist Convergence in August 2019 occupied Dine territory.
Ecosocialism blends ecological and marxist theory. Ecosocialists believe that capitalism is the root of war, poverty and environmental destruction and that dismantling capitalism will help solve these issues.
Geocommunism is a theory that has been developed by political geographer Arun Saldanha that argues that capitalism is the root of climate change and societal inequality. Geocommunism proposes a communist revolution rooted in intersectionality and ecological consciousness.
Excerpt from the geocommunist manifesto:
The Anthropocene has to be posited as the material and theoretical ground of any concept of social justice. The combat for justice starts with four facts: 1)resources are per definition finite, 2) the earth system has been irrevocably altered by human production, 3) positive feedback loops under capital are accelerating severe perturbations to ecosystems, 4) humans are in the last instance evolutionary entities at risk of starvation, disease and brutality. Scientists predicting half of humanity will perish by 2100 are already proposing fascist responses to these four facts.
https://sites.google.com/umn.edu/arunsaldanha/geocommunism
Social Ecology is the exploration of connections between people and the environment. Anarchist theorist Murray Bookchin analyzes the interdependence of social formations, institutions, and has radically inspired the emergence and sustenance of the Kurdish liberation movement.
VI.
Solidarity looks like Anti-Colonial Direct Action:
Image description: Tuira Kayapó, has been fighting to protect the amazon in Brazil for decades from western multinational companies. She ran the blade of her machete three times over the President of Light holding Company Petrobras cheeks and in her native tongue warned, “You are a liar. We do not need electricity. Electricity is not going to give us our food. We need our rivers to flow freely: our future depends on it. We need our jungles for hunting and gathering. We do not need your dam.”
VII.
Disaster Preparedness:
As climate change worsens, natural disasters will increase in severity and frequency. The Bay Area is long over do for a big Earthquake. The East Bay is particularly vulnerable to quakes because of Hayward fault. Although we cannot prevent natural disasters, we can prepare for them. Consider organizing with your neighborhood to create a disaster plan.

Environmental Trauma and Grief:
There is so much pain on Earth. Emotional responses like grief, sadness, anger, depression, anxiety, and dissociation are all normal responses to all the trauma on Earth. Give yourself space to mourn the state of Earth. Honor these feelings, but also try to transmute pain into action. These feelings may very well fuel our revolution.
We must fight and care for the living.
IX.

The biggest Polluter on the planet is the United States Military.
The United States Military has caused many environmental and health catastrophes. All the nuclear testing and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the use of chemical weapons in Vietnam and Cuba, have poisoned the people and land all over the world. This state sponsored violence begins here at home from native reservations to sacrifice zones in low income, black and brown neighborhoods. Our indigenous relatives here on Turtle Island throw down against pipelines, tar sands, uranium and coal mining on their land for water, the right to exist, survival. Here in the bay area there are several neighborhoods that are contaminated from naval bases like Treasure Island and Hunters Point that are still toxic. It is people of color and poor people that are most likely to live in these areas, be exposed to the toxins, and develop deadly diseases as a result of this ongoing violation and genocide.
XI.
Common Toxins
Many products contain toxic substances that can cause you harm. These toxins eventually leak into the environment which then causes ecological damage. Unfortunately, many chemicals are already in our waterways and soil. You can test your water and soil to see what toxins are in there. Look out for these common toxins and try to switch to alternatives.

“Kindness eases change, love quiets fear
And a sweet and powerful obsession blunts pain
Diverts rage and engages us in the greatest
The most intense of our chosen struggles”
We have a duty to ourselves, our relatives, and the earth. To abandon any of this is to abandon all those and that which makes us possible here now. Heal up, rise up, find your crew and act up..the time is up.

Easy Moving and Packing Tips
Moving house can be one of the most stressful events in your life but we think it doesn’t have to be that way4. We have put together some easy moving and packing tips that will help make the move less stressful and the cheapest way to move house in India. Don’t break your back or your precious household items, follow these tips and if you are struggling then you can enlist the help of packing and moving services from Packers and Movers Delhi to Patna Cost.
Clear the clutter – Before you start packing or use packing services you should clear out your clutter first. Don’t bring things that you don’t use or need. Make piles to sell, donate, and trash.
Use categories – Sort everything into categories. That way you can find things easily when unpacking because you will know where everything is. Examples could be clothes, books, toys, important documents, etc.
Choose the best – You need to make sure that if you’re using the cheapest way to move house in India services, you choose the best one because a bad team will create a stressful moving experience. The Nations Movers are the India’s top-rated packers and movers.
Organize Tasks – Stay organized by using to-do lists and a task calendar. If you have millions of things running through your head, chances are you will forget something. Use a list for tasks such as donating books, etc. You can use the calendar for events such as Friday – call The Nations Movers.
Recycle boxes – You don’t have to buy moving boxes. Ask at local stores for boxes and save boxes from items such as electronics, that way you can save money and recycle. Don’t forget to label the boxes too. You can use a number system so give each room a number. You can also buy stickers with different rooms wrote on them or write the labels yourself. Keep boxes from the same rooms together too.
Make sure you have supplies – Don’t run out of packing tape and other supplies. This will unnecessarily hold up the process.
Start packing in advance – Start packing months ahead with things you won’t be bringing. Get rid of those and then start packing up things you don’t use every day such as decorative items.
Change address and disconnect services – Make sure that all delivery companies and companies that supply services such as your internet know you moving.
Protect your items – Wrap breakables in bubble wrap or blankets. Pack plates vertically instead of stacking them as this will help to prevent cracks. Make sure bottles and toiletries don’t leak by taking off the lid and putting clingfilm or a plastic bag over the top and then put the lid back on.
Keep essentials separate – Pack a suitcase or bag with all the things you will need straight away. Think about toothbrushes, toilet paper, a change of outfit, etc.
Make sure you have somewhere to sleep – The beds should be a priority in your new home. After a long day of unpacking, the last thing you will want is lost bed sheets or no bed made at all.

HOW TO: CAMPING OVERNIGHT IN YOUR CAR
Recently my mother decided she needed a small vacation (as we all do) and decided to camp and hike Blood Mountain in North Georgia. (Look here for information about Blood Mountain and here for information about Vogel State Park) Instead of packing all the tents and camping supplies Mom methodically packed what she needed (and only what she needed, a mentality that I am trying to grasp) into her van and headed north to camp in her car! My mom drives a Chrysler Town and Countryand it is spacious. All she needed was an outfit or two, somewhere to sleep, and a way to make food. She drove up to North Georgia, found a nice little campsite close to the public bath/shower houses, and relaxed. The next day, Easter Sunday, she and Lolly (Mom’s ever shadowing Chihuahua) hiked the mountain, made food, and came home feeling rested and refreshed. Success!!
Here’s how she did it:
Let’s start with the bed:
Mom has a twin sized air mattress and a sleeping bag. Sheets and blankets are totally cool. Your sleeping arrangement is solely based on your comfort level. The bed took up most of the space in the van but this is perfect for a short trip. With a bit of creativity and a lot of minimizing, this type of van travel is great for long periods of time too.
Food:
I wasn’t at all surprised that Mom made her homemade no-bake chocolate covered oatmeal cookies (no hyperlink here because that recipe is a family secret). She chopped up all her veggies before she hit the road. Smart move. She also brought rice, salmon, and some frozen chicken. Mom’s car happens to have outlets that she can plug in her cooking appliances. On her little escape she only brought a rice cooker and an electric kettle. Depending on your diet and taste, you could easily pack a hot plate or a grill. If you don’t have outlets in your car, pack an extension cord and use the power stations offered at most campsites. (You should bring an extension cord anyway...) Or you can get really creative and cook over a fire with a skillet…but I think that requires a whole other tutorial. Mom also made some kale chips before she left so she had a nice salty, healthy snack for driving, camping or whenever she wanted them.
Comfort:
Since her goal was rest and relaxation, it’s safe to say Mom was comfortable. And of course so was Lolly (pictured). It’s hard to be comfortable in a tight space, but you don’t have to be in any tight space. The world is your space. The car is your means of shelter and mobility.
Hang nets from the hooks and handles above your windows to hold some light little things. Keep all of your belongings organized and in containers for safe storage. The use of bungee cords can eliminate the risk of stuff toppling over and creating a mess.
My mom built a comfortable bed with soft pillows and brought a chair to sit in so that she could enjoy being outside of the van. She packed a foldable table and added her own touch with a table runner from Rehab’s Rope, a nonprofit store that fights for gender equal rights in India and against child abuse and sex slavery.
Mom was able to cook herself a yummy, healthy meal with vegetables and rice and Salmon, make coffee and tea, and enjoy some alone time in the woods all without the expensive, big amenities and supplies. You CAN disappear for a day or too with a few bucks in your pocket, little to no camping supplies and ENJOY IT.
Soon, I am taking my own solo camping trip out of my car and I will be documenting all of it to report back the How To’s on HOW TO CAMP IN YOUR SMALLISH CAR.

The advantages for denim fabric include high strength and durable, as it can withstand abrasion, wrinkle resistance, and offer low maintenance, textured surface. The fabric is easy to wear, long-lasting, and does not progressively shrink.
The primary growth driver is the high demand for denim fabric in jeans and shirts across the globe. Major companies operating in the denim fabric include KURABO INDUSTRIES LTD, LNJ Denim, KAIHARA Corporation, ISKO, and KUROKI CO. LTD.
Pricing Analysis
In 2019, the denim fabric was priced between USD 8.5 and USD 9.4 per meter across the globe. The raw material for manufacturing denim fabric is mainly cotton. Buying Baby Gifts Online Can Preserve the Budget
Leading economists might argue that the present financial meltdown which people have is the worst of its type as the Great Depression. Surprisingly, the very same economists would recommend most people to devote their hard-earned cash. The reason for this is, by paying cash, you're in a position to keep businesses going thus letting them keep their present manpower.
With the present financial catastrophe still bearing its teeth if renowned economists dare you to devote part of your cash, it is very tempting to believe that there is no way you'd have the ability to purchase a baby gift for a friend or even a relative less to yourself. You may even be tempted to simply create your own present or try to find a sale on the regional thrift shop.
Online baby shops make it feasible for folks to create their Pull Along Toys Online India easily. Most often than not, these websites also permit free delivery so there is no requirement for you to journey to and fro so as to receive your purchase. Besides that, they also offer you numerous options that could cover the majority of your requirements - from diapers to automobile chairs and trolleys.
With the usage of the variety of online shops, it is possible to go much more practical by picking gifts that the receiver would truly have the ability to utilize. Stuffed toys are adorable but don't actually hold much practical value. Rather than things toys, you can opt for the more functional diaper accessories and bags. You might even give baby booties as infant presents or diaper bags, towels and blankets.
Although infant clothes might appear to be sensible, you need to take under account the simple fact those infants between zeros to six months old has a inclination to grow up quickly. It follows that, whatever clothing you purchase for these, it might just take them a couple of weeks to outgrow those garments.
If you believe practical means you need to forego uniqueness, consider again. Quite a few internet shops would give you diaper cakes in addition to clothes bouquet at a manageable price. If you're in the mood for a few DIY, you may also purchase the items individually and organize them by yourself.
Although affordability may be something that's difficult to associate with internet shops, it's actually something that's possible. How so? Due to the prevalence of internet stores offering baby gifts, accessories and requirements, the only way that they can compete with each other is by supplying what they have in a lower cost than their opponents, a very simple case of demand and supply. Additionally, an internet shop can provide unique advantages over a physical shop such as free delivery. And at today economic times, who does not need to find the very best deal for their hard earned dollar?

Plastic Waste Management in India
Plastic has multiple uses and the physical and chemical properties cause commercial success. However, the indiscriminate disposal of plastic has become a serious threat to the environment. In particular, the plastic carry bags are the most important contributors of littered waste and every year, millions of plastic bags end up in to the environment by soil, water bodies, water courses, etc and it takes a mean of one thousand years to decompose completely. Therefore, to deal with the difficulty of scientific plastic waste management, the Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011 were notified in 2011, which included plastic waste management. The government has listed the modified Plastic Waste Management Rules in 2016, in encouragement of the previous Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2011.
Plastic Waste Management Rules:
The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 aim to:
Ø Increase minimum thickness of plastic carry bags from 40 to 50 microns and stipulate minimum thickness of 50 micron for plastic sheets also to facilitate collection and recycle of plastic waste
Ø Expand the jurisdiction of applicability from the municipal area to rural areas, because plastic has reached rural areas also
Ø To bring in the responsibilities of producers and generators, both in plastic waste management system and to introduce collect back system of plastic waste by the producers/brand owners, as per extended producers responsibility
Ø To introduce collection of plastic waste management fee through pre-registration of the producers, importers of plastic carry bags/multilayered packaging and vendors selling the same for establishing the waste management system
Ø To promote use of plastic waste for road construction as per Indian Road Congress guidelines or energy recovery, or waste to oil etc. for gainful utilization of waste and also address the waste disposal issue, to entrust more responsibility on waste generators, namely payment of user charge as prescribed by agency, collection and d of waste by the institutional generator, event organizers.
Ø An eco-friendly product, which is a complete substitute of the plastic in all uses, has not been found till date. In the absence of an appropriate alternative, it’s impractical and undesirable to impose a blanket ban on the utilization of plastic all over the country. The real challenge is to enhance plastic waste management systems.
What's new in Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016?
Ø Rural areas have been brought in ambit of these Rules since plastic has reached to rural areas also. Responsibility for implementation of the principles is given to Gram Panchayat.
Ø First time, responsibility of waste generators is being introduced. Individual and bulk generators such as offices, commercial establishments, industries are to segregate the plastic waste at source, handover segregated waste, pay user fee as per bye-laws of the local bodies.
Ø Plastic products are left littered after the public events (marriage functions, religious gatherings, public meetings etc) held in open spaces. First time, persons organizing such events are made liable for management of waste generated from these events.
Ø Uses of plastic sheet for packaging, wrapping the commodity except those plastic sheets’ thickness, which will impair the functionality of the product, are brought under the ambit of these rules. A large number of goods are being packed/wrapped in to plastic sheets and thereafter such sheets are left for littered. Provisions have been introduced to make sure their collection and channelization to authorized recycling facilities.
Ø Extended Producer Responsibility: Earlier, EPR was left to the discretion of the local bodies. First time, the producers (i.e. peoples engaged in manufacture, or import of carry bags, multi-layered packaging and sheets or like and therefore the peoples using these for packaging or wrapping their products) and brand owners have are made liable for collecting waste generated from their products. They have to approach local agencies for formulation of plan/system for the plastic waste management within the prescribed time.
Ø State Pollution Control Board (SPCBs) will not grant/renew registration of plastic bags, or multi-layered packaging unless the producer proposes the action plan endorsed by the concerned State Development Department.
Ø Producers to keep a record of their vendors to whom they have supplied raw materials for manufacturing carry bags, plastic sheets, and multi-layered packaging. This is to curb manufacturing of these products in unorganized sector.
Ø The entry points of plastic bags/plastic sheets/multi-layered packaging in to commodity supply chain are primarily the retailers and street vendors. They have been assigned the responsibility of to not provide the commodities in plastic bags/plastic sheets/multi-layered packaging which don’t conform to those rules. Otherwise, they will have to pay the fine.
Ø Plastic carry bag will be available only with shopkeepers/street vendors pre-registered with local bodies on payment of certain registration fee. The amount collected as registration fee by local agencies is to be used for waste management.
Ø Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has been mandated to formulate the guidelines for thermoset plastic (plastic difficult to recycle).
Ø Manufacturing and use of non-recyclable multi-layered plastic to be phased in two years.
Plastic Waste Generation in India
According to the reports for year 2017-18, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has estimated that India generates approximately 9.4 Million tonnes per annum plastic waste, (which amounts to 26,000 tonnes of waste per day), and out of this approximately 5.6 Million tonnes per year plastic waste is recycled (i.e. 15,600 tonnes of waste per day) and 3.8 Million tonnes per annum plastic waste is left uncollected or littered (9,400 tonnes of waste per day).
Out of the 60% of recycled plastic:
• 70% is recycled at registered facilities
• 20% is recycled by Unorganized Sector
• 10% of the plastic is recycled at home
While these stats are 38% higher than the global average of 20%, there are no comprehensive methods in place for plastic waste management. Additionally, there is a constant increase in plastics waste generation. One of the major reasons for this is that 50% of plastic is discarded as waste after single use. This also adds to increase in the carbon footprint since single use of plastic products increase the demand for virgin plastic products.

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Colin McIntosh of Sheets & Giggles, a brand that sells eucalyptus bedding. Some stats:Product: Eucalyptus bedding.Revenue/mo: $76,000Started: May 2018Location: Denver, COFounders: 1Employees: 4Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?I’m Colin McIntosh, Founder & CEO of Sheets & Giggles, a pun-based, eco-friendly bedding brand that launched in May 2018 on Indiegogo with our first product: lyocell bed sheets made from eucalyptus trees. Our bedding is softer than cotton, more breathable, and more moisture-wicking, and it also uses up to 95% less water than cotton sheets to make. (Major trade-off: it’s generally more expensive than cotton, and you have to take better care of it [no bleach, cold wash, low heat, etc.].)In our first 6 months in business, we received over 6,000 orders and nearly half a million dollars in revenue, and in September we won first place at Denver Startup Week 2018. In October, we began shipping preorders and got about 4,500 out the door, and we’re still catching up with demand! Nearly ⅘ of our customers are women, and more than half are in their 20s and 30s.What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea? From 2015 - 2017 I ran biz dev at a Techstars-backed wearable tech startup in Denver. We raised a $3M seed round, grew to a full-time team of 25, and were in most major retailers in the US… and then it all abruptly ended in September 2017. It was pretty devastating, and I can’t really go into the reasons why it ended, but leaving retail partners at the altar without holiday inventory was particularly upsetting for me as the partner lead. After that experience, I decided that the timing was about as good as it was going to get for me to found a company: I had a great CO network, had just been through Techstars, was on the founding team of a company that launched two crowdfunded physical products at nationwide retail, and had built a skill set in marketing and distributing physical products. That said, I didn’t have much money in my bank account (working at startups will do that to you), and I didn’t want to raise VC right off the bat, so I knew I had to do a crowdfunding campaign. My criteria for a new businessI decided that I needed my own physical product brand to sell, and I started by listing the criteria for my new company. I wanted:A large commodities market (so I didn’t have to build a category out of thin air), but one that I could differentiate meaningfully in.A highly fragmented market with no clear leaderA market with no brand loyalty or affinityA market with little brand differentiationA product that was traditionally physical retail that I could help bring online with a DTC modelA product with a low-complexity supply chain (i.e., no electronics or software components)The domainI really believe that a good brand name and .com can make or break a company, so I looked through all the domains I owned to see if anything matched. I owned SheetsGiggles.com, and I thought “Does bed sheets fit?” and it did, almost perfectly.(Side note – I owned the domain because in the summer of 2017 I was watching War Dogs, and Miles Teller’s character tries to sell bed sheets to retirement homes that all reject his product. I couldn’t believe that his character didn’t do market research and validation before buying all that inventory, so I told my girlfriend to pause the movie so I could write a full business plan for a bed sheets company named Sheets & Giggles, and I bought the domain that night. She and I have since broken up because, well, yeah… who does that.)In short, I built a business model I felt very passionately about, and then designed a product that I thought plugged nicely into that model.Validating the productIn February, I then validated that people would actually pay a profitable price by initially running a few hundred bucks worth of Facebook ads to a landing page I built with Kickoff Labs and Shopify. (Link is to an old page that’s still the same, though the CTA changed after April to funnel traffic to the Indiegogo vs email capture.)With the help of a crowdfunding agency I trusted, I targeted crowdfunding lookalike audiences, told people the expected price and launch date on Indiegogo, explained the product with some punny copy, laid out a few fun pictures we had taken at a photoshoot that cost us $500, and asked for their email. To this day I’m still a little shocked, but 46% of people gave us their emails during this time, and we collected over 11,000 emails from interested buyers in just 8 weeks. We also used this prep time ahead of the crowdfund to lock down a manufacturer and send them initial designs and order quantities, and on May 1 we launched on Indiegogo with nearly 500 customers on day 1 and $45,000 in day 1 funding (on a $25k goal).Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing the product.Because I didn’t have any textile experience, I had to hire outside consultants to help me design, develop, and test our products.I gave them my high-level criteria (lyocell for sustainability, has to be super soft, has to be premium, must be durable, must be made by a socially conscious manufacturer, etc.), and they created my tech packs and other designs for me.We sourced our manufacturer at market week in NYC in March 2018, and we left with a handshake agreement with an Indian company who hit all our criteria more so than anyone else. I had a blast visiting them to inspect production in June (fun fact: India is hot in June). We had massive fabric rejections due to poor quality in our first production runs, which lowered our overall sales potential for the year and set our ship date back, but we had to make sure our product was perfect. The unboxing experienceI also had a particular vision for our packaging centered around one goal: because we were a DTC company and wouldn’t do physical retail in year 1, we needed to focus entirely on an incredible unboxing experience that made the product feel as premium as possible.Outside: a white box, nice wax coating, logo front and center with no other copy, easy to open, nice and sturdy.Inside: make people smile from the get-go, have a social call-to-action, include free extra surprises (a knapsack that wraps the sheets and an eye mask), put funny copy all over the place, and add a donation bag that people could use to donate their now-defunct cotton sheets (sheets & blankets are the #2-most-requested item at shelters behind socks).Describe the process of launching the business. We founded S&G in October 2017, but we started work in earnest on January 2, 2018. I actually have a longer blog post on our site from Week 2 about what we did from October - January. We spent our first 3-4 months building a brand identity map, getting the bare bones website set up, getting a logo finalized, refining our messaging, and setting goals for “what success looks like.”I also hired a part-time intern and a marketing agency that would help with our crowdfunding campaign (that’s now my agency of record), and I hired a PR agent in Denver that I knew through the grapevine.I brought on a small 2-person product team to design the products I had envisioned, and in March we found and signed our manufacturer in NYC at Market Week (met with a bunch of manufacturers for interviews, described what we needed, got to know people, sampled different fabrics, and left with a handshake deal). In February, we did our first photo shoots, and in March we did a video shoot in preparation of our 30-day Indiegogo that was planned for May 1. Luckily I knew people locally in Denver that I could ask for photography and videography help, and all in all we spent about $3,000 making our initial collateral for the Indiegogo. We had a single set of white sheets that we used for all our lifestyle and product shots, and because I’m an idiot I didn’t even wash them or iron them, so we’ve got visible creases in all the pictures that we use to this day :pPrepping for crowdfunding campaignWe budgeted 10 weeks to get ready for our Indiegogo (that’s a must), and we spent that time running Facebook ads to landing pages that were set up for email capture.Working backwards from a $100K goal and an estimated $100 average backer value, we knew we needed 1,000 backers, and we knew that we had to get about 30% of those (300) in the first 24 hours to be successful.Assuming a 3% conversion on our email list, that meant we had to get 10,000 emails to ensure 300 day 1 customers. I budgeted $1 - $2 per email lead, and I hoped to convert at a high enough rate to come in under that (ended up being $0.89 per lead).Building our email listsDuring this prep time, we used Kickoff Labs for our landing page software, and we ran a social sharing competition so people would share our landing pages organically as well (we got about 15% of our leads organically). We ran about 50 different ad variants to about 12 different landing pages to find out what converted the best (different images, headers, subheaders, text, value props, calls-to-action, layouts, etc.), and then we picked the best combo of 4 ads and 2 landing pages that converted best.We ended up capturing 11,000 emails in 10 weeks at about 46% conversion, which was insane – that’s when I knew we were on to something.Building hype and the launchWe sent out one email per month to our list to keep them engaged, got customer feedback in the form of surveys (which colors to they want, most popular sizes, etc.), and that informed which colors and sizes we chose to make for our launch (had to hone in on 25 SKUs tops to ensure limited logistical complexity).Ahead of May 1, we sent out “72 hours” and “night before emails,” and on May 1 we ended up raising $45,000 on our first day from over 400 backers! (We also did a ton of product development and testing / approvals, designed and approved packaging, placed our first PO in April with a deposit to our manufacturer, and spent time planning out the cadence of our Indiegogo communication and marketing.)In June I traveled to India to inspect production and our facilities, and I made sure the production quality and pace was what we needed to succeed. Love our Indian partners. We began shipping thousands of preorders on October 1 (pretty much all 5-star reviews!), and now we’re just holding on for dear life through the holidays.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?Social media engagementI think the single best thing we do to drive conversion is answer all Facebook comments and messages within minutes. I have the Pages Manager app on my phone (it’s terrible but it at least works), and when people comment on our ads we respond immediately to almost every single comment with on-brand straightforward answers, questions, jokes, pics, gifs, etc.I honestly think that some people are deciding to buy before they ever click on our ads based on our answers to questions and interaction with commenters.A lot of people (especially customer service folks) don’t understand that you’re not just responding to the person who asked; you’re writing marketing language to convert the thousands of people who will read the comments before clicking.SEOWe have about 50-50 paid/organic traffic right now. On the SEO side, we’ve worked to become the #1 result for “eucalyptus sheets” (ahead of Bed Bath, even) and top 5 for “lyocell sheets,” which are both small but very targeted organic search queries. Good steady revenue flows. We also have a ton of word of mouth with our customers and are starting a referral program that gives people 10% cash back for sales they refer when they share S&G with others and $10 off for their friends that use their link. (It’s already been used by large media outlets with good success.)Only funny emailsWe also almost never email our list of customers or broader email list. If we email people (maybe once a month), it’s something objectively funny that will make them laugh (and may not even have a CTA), or it’s worth their while in the form of a targeted sale. (I.e., “Hey you love your sheets, did you know they also make a sheety gift?”)Purple FridayOur most successful day post-Indiegogo has been Purple Friday (PF), which we did on 11/16 (Friday before Black Friday). We got over $22K in sales in one day, and to accomplish that we ran a 30% off sale (normally 15% off for preorders) and pushed 24-hour ads to Facebook to spread the word to our followers, general audiences, existing customers, and prior site visitors. We also sent out an email about PF to our existing customers that focused on giving the gift of S&G to someone eco-conscious in their life. This strategy allowed us to preemptively tap into holiday purchases without competing with everyone’s Black Friday (BF) sales; we were able to elevate our brand “above” the insanity of BF; and we were still able to double dip and participate in Black Friday and Cyber Monday because of the natural increase in conversion on those days (but we didn’t send out emails about those days).Customer serviceWe bend over backwards for customer service; I literally put my cell phone on the contact page and get about 10 calls a day.Defects? Free replacement.Delayed shipment? Amazon gift card.Follow us on Twitter / Insta / FB? You’re gonna get free money, free pizza, and free sheet.ReviewsAnd of course, the social proof that comes from reviews has been crucial. In my opinion, our reviews are responsible for upping our conversion rate from 4% in August (no reviews, pure preorder) to 5% in October (first reviews) to 6% in November (more reviews). How are you doing today and what does the future look like?We operate profitably, and in 2018 we’ll grow at a 25% compound monthly growth rate (60% from last month). We’ll probably end the year at about $600K in revenue (constrained by inventory), with 65% gross margins and about 10% net margins when it’s all said and done. Our cost of acquisition is under $30 for the year, we’re converting at over 5% on SheetsGiggles.com right now, and 100% of our sales come through the site.Average initial cart values are about $140, and lifetime values should be > $1000 if we play our cards right (38% of Americans buy new sheets every year). Our day-to-day operations revolve around production management, customer service, digital marketing, website improvements, content creation, fundraising, and logistics.Next year, we’ll expand our product lines to new sizes (Twin, Split King), add new colors (red, green, beige), and add our first non-bedding product: a eucalyptus lyocell throw blanket. We also plan to dip our toes into international sales next year with the UK, Australia, and Canada, and likely the EU too (gotta start translating the pun somehow).Short term, I start paying myself in December (sheet yeah, only took a full year...), and next year we plan to grow 4-5x in revenue. To accomplish that, we’ll expand to a couple new channels without going overboard or doing physical retail (Amazon in January, and HSN or QVC would be my Q3/4 target).I can talk for hours about why we’re not doing physical retail. Main reasons:Their margin share requirements for this category are ~40-60%, which means our “cost of acquisition” for that channel will at least be the margin cost, which is 2x our standard CAC.For little-known brands that don’t “sell themselves,” merchandising costs add up super quick. I.e., if you’re a new company and need to educate people on your product to sell through, you need to spend money on displays, which can wind up being hundreds of dollars per store. If you’re in 1000 stores and you’re merchandising correctly, you’ll spend over $100,000 before you sell a single unit. You need to train sales associates to talk about a product well, which costs money and will give you little long-term ROI (high turnover in sales associates). I can’t tell you how many bedding stores I’ve walked into and asked questions about competitors’ brands, only to be given totally incorrect information with poor sales efforts (I’m weird and do this too often).Your packaging needs to “sell” the product in person, or it at least needs to grab someone’s attention and make them stop. Ours is a clean white box with our brand name on it; it would be DOA at retail until we revamp it.Return policies can cripple a startup. If we sold 50 units into 100 stores on Nov. 1, that’s 5,000 units and hundreds of thousands of dollars, right? Nice. Except if on Jan. 1 each store still has 25 units on hand, those 2,500 units are coming right back to you, and you better have kept half the money you from that PO in escrow. Otherwise, you’re cooked. (And if you think you can negotiate away return rights, they’ll just dump your remaining inventory on Amazon, stealing the buy box away from you and harming your brand in the process.)Philosophically, instead of rushing into retail headfirst, I think it’s strategically wiser to spend a few years building a well-known brand that will sell itself at retail and that will give you more supplier power when negotiating with retailers. As for what long-term success looks like, I envision storming the last Bed Bath & Beyond in a sort of Helms-Deep-style raid.Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?Habit: I always try to have an action bias, and I try to focus on getting items done that “unlock” my team members’ work. If someone needs me to write some copy that allows them to do 4 hours of work, I’ll take care of that first thing in the AM. Or, if someone needs to be trained on logistics software to do customer service, I know my life will be made easier if I train them ahead of tackling my must-do’s for the day.Lesson: We should have been a C-Corp from day 1 (we were an LLC at first). Corporate transitions cost attorney fees.Unforeseen problem: Political season drives up the cost of Facebook ads big time (50% increase).Lesson: Don’t hire people you know are assholes just because you need someone to do the job. Suffer and do it yourself, or delay the launch, but don’t hire assholes. It’ll hurt you more in the long run.Lesson: You get lonely, and personal relationships will suffer. Make time for family; why even start a business if you can’t spend time with important people in your life?Good decision: Stay heads down on building a business that’s revenue-positive and growing, and investment will come to you. What platform/tools do you use for your business?Google Sheets is my everything; I obsessively update my pro forma before I go to bed every night with daily numbers.Shopify is an amazing platform and I love that they calculate and collect local sales tax for you.Bold Cashier + Bold Upsell are the best apps on Shopify for upselling after someone has already made a purchase, which is incredibly valuable (about 20% of people add something else to their cart after they’ve already given you money, which increases average cart values).I use Judge.me’s Shopify app for my product reviews – best cheap app by far and allows people to post verified reviews, pics, videos, edit reviews, etc.Hypervisual Page Builder is the perfect Shopify app for building out landing pages that convert.Streak is great – I track leads (out of stock requests, etc.) all from Streak.Lastpass for password management.Slack for team comms.MailChimp for email. My logistics software… I would not recommend and we’re switching. Open to suggestions. What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources? It’s embarrassing, but I don’t really read books at this point. I hate that I’ve become this person who just works when I’m awake, and I need to make time to read more. I do love the Dan Le Batard Show podcast – it keeps me up to date on sports and pop culture and is my lifeline back to Miami, where I’m from.Rand Fishkin did a 40-minute talk in September of this year that was stellar and that I think is a must watch for someone starting a business. He’s learned a lot the hard way, and you can almost hear the desperation in his voice basically telling you “learn from my mistakes.”The best thing I ever heard from him is something like “If you make $10M in revenue, you hear crickets. If you raise $10M, your family comes out the woodwork, your friends trip over themselves to congratulate you, your team throws you a party, you become the toast of the town, TechCrunch writes an article about you. This is how we train people to raise money and not make money.”My best resource has been and continues to be the Techstars network (went through Techstars in 2015 in Boulder). I’m on the Colorado Techstars alumni board and love that I have access to the network for mentorship, investment, amplification, and recruitment.Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?My #1 thing is: build a business model first, not a product. So many entrepreneurs spend time and money (lots of time and lots of money) building a solution for a problem they perceive without ever validating that it’s a viable business.Make sure you feel passionately sure that the business model is sound – sustainable margins, strong product-market fit, engaged potential buyers, and long-term growth potential.Spend a few hundred bucks on Facebook ads to a landing page that describes what you’re building – are people giving you their email to lock in to the Kickstarter price? No? Then you have to go back to the drawing board before you spend more money and figure out if your value prop isn’t good enough, if the product vision needs improvement, if your proposed price is too high, or if your marketing just sucks. The last thing you want to do is to spend $100,000 building something over a year of your life and then find out nobody wants it.I genuinely think that people do the opposite of this because when you work on a product, no one can tell you no. In your mind’s eye, it’s going to be a huge success, and you can stay heads down on building it. You can envision a perfect future. The moment you begin selling and someone tells you no, that rejection stings worse than anything in the world, so I think people avoid that inflection point (sales) for as long as possible to avoid possible rejection while they work on building the “perfect” MVP.Going headfirst into sales / gathering leads can actually really help you, though. You’ll gather a user base who can give you feedback on how they want you to build the product, and more importantly you can go to an investor and say, “I have 500 leads signed up who will give me money if I can give them this thing. Give me money to build this thing.” It’s a much stronger value prop than “I want to build this thing and here’s why it makes sense,” and it doesn’t cost you that much to do (costs far less than product development). Are you looking to hire for certain positions right now?Yes, I’m hiring in marketing (someone who can do everything including creative, copywriting, and digital), supply chain management, logistics (inventory management, international freight, and domestic shipping), and customer care.Where can we go to learn more?SheetsGiggles.com or @SheetsGiggles anywhere on social, including /u/SheetsGiggles on Reddit. (I have a weirdly viral post on resumes on Reddit from back in February.)My email is [email protected] if anyone wants to drop me a line (787 unread and counting… sorry if I don’t get back right away!).Liked this text interview?
