A/N: I took a bit of creative liberties here and decided that the batcave is close enough to a cellar and/or hidden room and the clocktower is close enough to an attic 😅 - mod angel

Pairing: Jason Todd x GN!Reader

Summary: You’re helping Oracle with patrol watch until you need to comfort a mildly injured vigilante.

You never thought you’d be able to see vigilantes in action like this. But, considering you were already aware of everyone’s identities at this point, and with how close you had become with everyone, you were invited to help watch over everyone on patrol. 

Barbara had invited you to the clocktower one day, saying she could use an extra pair of eyes while everyone was out on patrol. Really, she probably just overheard you say how much you wished you could see everyone in action. 

The first thing you noticed when you entered the room was all the monitors. Various tracking maps, security cameras, databases… all on huge screens that towered over you. 

“Whoa…” you breathed, awestruck. 

Barbara turned her head towards you, smiling. “Welcome to my utopia,” she announced with a flourish of her hands. 

You walked over to her desk, really getting a feel for all the technology in the room. You ran your fingers over the table, feeling the smooth wood under your skin. All that was on the desk was a keyboard. There was no need for paper with all those monitors, you guessed. 

“Impressive,” you muttered, transfixed by watching all the movement on the screens. “What happens if the power goes out?”

“Very powerful generators,” she replied, gesturing to one that was sitting under the desk. “We have quite the budget.”

“Right,” you laughed lightly, crouching down next to the desk. “So, what am I looking at?”

She started pointing out each part of the monitors: the locations, which of the moving dots corresponded to which person, the cases that were currently being worked on…

“Oracle,” you suddenly heard a familiar voice coming from Barbara’s comm link. “I need sights on a group of robbers near Gotham National Bank. I’m in pursuit, trying to keep myself out of their sight, and I need to know where I can cut them off.”

“I’ll get right on that, Hood,” she replied, sounding very professional as she started clacking away at her keyboard. 

“Hood?” You asked her quietly, looking at the dot on the map she said was Jason moving very quickly away from the bank. She nodded without breaking her concentration. 

Almost without thinking, you started shouting, “Hi Ja-“ you cut yourself off, suddenly remembering the circumstances you were in when Barbara gave you a stern look. “Hi Red Hood!” You shouted, fixing yourself. 

“Huh?” You heard him reply, confused. “Is that- AH!” 

Suddenly, you heard a loud crash! and saw the dot on the map stop abruptly. You widened your eyes and covered your mouth in shock.

“… Hood?” Barbara asked as you looked at each other, her eyebrows raised. 

“Shit,” he groaned, and you could hear the clanking of metal from around him. “Uh… yeah, I don’t think I’m catching those robbers,” he sighed. “Is anyone else around? I’m going back to the Batcave.”

There was various chatter over the comms, from what you could hear over Barbara’s laughing, before one of the other dots on the map started moving towards where Jason was. 

“You wanna go meet him there?” Barbara asked, covering her comm for a second. 

“Do I wanna…?” You repeated quietly, your eyes widening. “Uhh, am I allowed in the Batcave?”

She shrugged. “Batman’s not there. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” She started clacking on her keyboard again. “I can give you access. I trust you.”

“O… okay…” you muttered, standing up. “I guess I’ll just… go there, then…” You never thought you’d be allowed in the Batcave. It was kind of exciting. 

You followed the directions Barbara gave you, eventually going through some secret tunnels and emerging in a huge, yet oddly well-kept cave. Computers, training equipment, and various vehicles were in their designated places. The place was basically devoid of people, except for…

“Fuck,” you heard a familiar groan, making you stifle a laugh. His steps echoed throughout the quiet cave, sounding like they were coming closer to you. 

You popped out of where you had been standing behind a car, making Jason drop his helmet. That made you really start laughing. 

“Jesus, why are you surprising me so much today?” He asked as you moved closer to him. He looked like he was holding back a smile. “Are you even allowed to be here?”

You shrugged, tucking yourself into his side. “Oracle let me in.”

“Of course she did,” he replied, wrapping his arm around your waist. “Nothing is sacred to that girl.”

As you got a better look at his face, you frowned. Bruises were starting to form on his cheek. “What happened, by the way?” You asked, pointing to them. 

He grit his teeth, looking at you pointedly. “I was chasing people when someone distracted me, and I…” He sighed, rubbing the back of his head. “I ran into a bunch of trash cans.”

You covered your mouth, trying not to laugh hysterically, but absolutely failing.

“Hey, don’t laugh,” he rolled his eyes, a slight grin on his face. “It’s your fault.”

“Yeah, yeah,” you shook your head, gently tracing the bruises. “It’s alright, I can make it better.” You stood up on your tiptoes to press a little kiss to his cheek. 

He scoffed, looking like he was blushing a bit as he looked away from you. “I’m not five, that’s not going to work.” He ruffled your hair, making you giggle. “I’ll be fine, no major damage. I’ve been through a lot worse,” he sneered. 

You rolled your eyes. “Not everything has to be about your death,” you poked him in the side, making him laugh. “C’mon, let’s go see Alfred for some first aid.”

Damien morning by morning had scribbled notes in incredibly legible cartography for his age writing what he had learned from his eldest brother to his father and now it was time to get the opinion of The Oracle, the hero who had roamed the streets of Gotham the longest outside of his father, due to Dick’s absence and focus on Bludhaven. He knew the importance of a clear head, of reflecting on one's emotions but not allowing their complete control, he knew he needed to trust his team and his family, and he knew he needed independence through it all. So he went up to Bab’s as she rolled to the living room to sit by the fire on her night off of patrol and asked simply,

Barbara, I am collecting data. I have already asked father and Dick their opinions on my query. You see I wish to learn to better myself as a Robin, as a Bat in ways that I wouldn’t discover on my own. Independence, family, a clear head, and emotional security, those are the lessons they’ve taught me so I ask you Babarba what, to you, made you truly realize what it meant to be a Bat?

Essentially you’re brother and father have trauma dumped to you because you asked and now you want me to to give you some profound wisdom to help you be a better crime fighter via my trauma

If that's what you want, sure I’m down. Where do I begin… Jason had recently died, that hit me like a truck but affected your father even worse… I don’t think I've ever seen the bat more in despair, more destroyed, that close to breaking his one rule and the Joker was still at large. 

He wouldn’t let me patrol, didn’t stop me but I was solo… 

That's when the Joker kidnapped my father and broke into my apartment… before my reflexes I trained so hard to maintain could kick in. I remember my mind flashing, seeing Jason’s scorched body in that tiny scorched Robin suit…

My nerves shot and I froze in place… I couldn’t move and that's when I felt the sharp pain pierce my stomach and exit my spine… as a chunk of hot lead hit the floor so did my body and I heard the same horrid laughter that sent Jason off to his death… what he did next I can’t… even in this line of work… I still can’t speak of it… I was broken inside… eventually, I recovered, Bruce saved my father, Bruce nearly killed the Joker but managed to stop himself but I was broken inside, I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t fight, I didn’t know what I could possibly do, I wasn’t batgirl anymore, I didn’t know what I was… I wish I could say the call for justice made everything right but it didn’t and I must have spent a month sulking in a deep depression, I lost my will to survive… but you know what I did young Damian.

I persevered. 

Yes, it took time but I discovered ways I could help even in my state ways beyond Bruce’s brains… Why do you think when Tim needs problem-solving advice he comes to me first? I persevered, I found a way, I trained with batons and learned to fight around my chair but that's not how I helped, I used my knowledge, my database, my eidetic memory. I became Oracle. If it wasn’t for my inner knowledge of battle strategy, of bat family secrets, and my constant surveillance of the streets… half our family would be dead. During Carrie’s second run as Robin, we had her and Red Robin patrolling the streets while Bruce and the Justice League were away fighting an alien invasion over West City and Dick unable to help due to him and the Titans handling trouble deep in space with Guy Gardner. It was just us 3 and Cobblepot had manipulated the Killer Crock to use him as muscle. The streets were flowing with blood as a creature lurked in the sewer… if I didn’t have surveillance Carrie would have been bitten in half and if I didn’t memorize every strategy Bruce had ever used then Red Robin wouldn’t have been able to corner Crock and catch him while keeping all his limbs intact, and if I didn't have an intense knowledge of Penguin’s previous escape routes then the police wouldn’t have been able to corner him before he got away and started this fiasco all over again. Resilience, Damian, and perseverance are what made me truly realize who I was as a bat. 

Thank you, Barbara… I found that answer… outstanding… I don’t offer these lightly so take the opportunity… do you… do you require a hug?

I don't really think they're like, as useful as people say, but there are genuine usecases I feel -- just not for the massive, public facing, plagiarism machine garbage fire ones. I don't work in enterprise, I work in game dev, so this goes off of what I have been told, but -- take a company like Oracle, for instance. Massive databases, massive codebases. People I know who work there have told me that their internally trained LLM is really good at parsing plain language questions about, say, where a function is, where a bit oif data is, etc., and outputing a legible answer. Yes, search machines can do this too, but if you've worked on massive datasets -- well, conventional search methods tend to perform rather poorly.

From people I know at Microsoft, there's an internal-use version of co-pilot weighted to favor internal MS answers that still will hallucinate, but it is also really good at explaining and parsing out code that has even the slightest of documentation, and can be good at reimplementing functions, or knowing where to call them, etc. I don't necessarily think this use of LLMs is great, but it *allegedly* works and I'm inclined to trust programmers on this subject (who are largely AI critical, at least wrt chatGPT and Midjourney etc), over "tech bros" who haven't programmed in years and are just execs.

I will say one thing that is consistent, and that I have actually witnessed myself; most working on enterprise code seem to indicate that LLMs are really good at writing boilerplate code (which isn't hard per se, bu t extremely tedious), and also really good at writing SQL queries. Which, that last one is fair. No one wants to write SQL queries.

To be clear, this isn't a defense of the "genAI" fad by any means. chatGPT is unreliable at best, and straight up making shit up at worst. Midjourney is stealing art and producing nonsense. Voice labs are undermining the rights of voice actors. But, as a programmer at least, I find the idea of how LLMs work to be quite interesting. They really are very advanced versions of old text parsers like you'd see in old games like ZORK, but instead of being tied to a prewritten lexicon, they can actually "understand" concepts.

I use "understand" in heavy quotes, but rather than being hardcoded to relate words to commands, they can connect input written in plain english (or other languages, but I'm sure it might struggle with some sufficiently different from english given that CompSci, even tech produced out of the west, is very english-centric) to concepts within a dataset and then tell you about the concepts it found in a way that's easy to parse and understand. The reason LLMs got hijacked by like, chatbots and such, is because the answers are so human-readable that, if you squint and turn your head, it almost looks like a human is talking to you.

I think that is conceptually rather interesting tech! Ofc, non LLM Machine Learning algos are also super useful and interesting - which is why I fight back against the use of the term AI. genAI is a little bit more accurate, but I like calling things what they are. AI is such an umbrella that includes things like machine learning algos that have existed for decades, and while I don't think MOST people are against those, I see people who see like, a machine learning tool from before the LLM craze (or someone using a different machine learning tool) and getting pushback as if they are doing genAI. To be clear, thats the fault of the marketing around LLMs and the tech bros pushing them, not the general public -- they were poorly educated, but on purpose by said PR lies.

Now, LLMs I think are way more limited in scope than tech CEOs want you to believe. They aren't the future of public internet searches (just look at google), or art creation, or serious research by any means. But, they're pretty good at searching large datasets (as long as there's no contradictory info), writing boilerplate functions, and SQL queries.

Honestly, if all they did was SQL queries, that'd be enough for me to be interested fuck that shit. (a little hyperbolic/sarcastic on that last part to be clear).
