#Or maybe it's my green-haired character bias blinding me who knows

March Fields of Mistria is almost Martin RF5 but insecure/purposefully mean and abrasive instead of (usually) accidentally savage due to a smidge of the spectrum + special interest: blacksmithing. I imagine there's some character growth with the former at some point but in the meantime I think Olric should be allowed to bop his brother on the head with a cardboard tube whenever he's being rude.

...I was visiting a city, late in the day as the sunset turned the buildings red. i knew where I was, but the roads and buildings still seemed wrong, going directions I didn’t expect, towering taller than I remembered. I was alone, so I walked along, but I knew I couldn’t make it without help.
Then a car pulled up next to me, and I was happy to see the driver, he was family. He opened the door and I climbed into the passenger seat. The ancient leather creaked under my weight and the old dashboard was covered in dust. The car was cream colored with brown lining, and looked like it would have been peak of fasion in the 90′s. It smelled faintly of cigarettes.
we drove through the city, relaxed and chatting, though there were no audible words spoken. Then the driver told me he needed to grab something, and we pulled into a parking lot. It was in a kind of run down part of town, the asphault rough with years of use and cheap repairs. The building was a small outdoor strip mall and the last store on the end was a boba tea shop.
he parked the car and walked in ahead of me, the bright store lights blinding in the evening. The shopkeep was looking haggard and looked at us as if we were some scum in a gutter. I tried to ignore her, and just looked at the menu. I know what I wanted, but as I walked up and spoke, a different order came out of my mouth and the woman sneered like I had just confirmed her bias.
I was annoyed and didn’t want to wait inside, so I walked back out to the car. I peered into the open driver’s side window and reached in to push some old jacket on top of a pile of stuff that the driver had left out in the open, this was a bad area afterall.
I walked back to the store to see if my order was up yet, but it wasn’t. THen I turned again and standing next to our old car was a young woman, dressed in a dark hoodie with dark hair. She had a backpack and a scateboard and was looking about shiftily as she reached into the car.
I rushed up and growled at her, askign what she was thinking. SHe startled and tried to run away but I grabbed her arm. I gestured twards the shop and told her she wasn’t being smart, that shops are always full of peaople who would make her life miserable, that she needed a better place to try to sneak.
She looked a little shocked but nodded, and I asked her what she had taken from the car. At first she refused, but eventually admitted that she had taken a purple binder. I asked for it back, and told her to get out of here before They see her. She rode off into the darkness.
I looked down at the purple binder, and it was covering a large metal plaque with some red cartoon character engraved on it. For a moment I thought maybe it was something from a previous job that I forgot to finish, and returned to the shop. I was going to ask the driver to help me take it back, but as soon as I opened the door I stopped.
The shop was full of people. hundreds of people. hundreds of women actually, all chatting loudly and holding their phones with their glittering blue and green fake nails. Rows of glittery nails. I immediately slammed the door closed. the They I had warned the girl about were here. I needed to get back, but I knew I had to do it on my own this time.
I grabbed the back of my shirt and pulled, and my clothes changed into a dress, dark blue and silky, and I grabbed a clipboard. As I stepped off the curb and into the street, the floor changed. It was hard polished wood in a room full of stage props. They were brightly colored scenes from a city and all around me people bustled about busy with unknown urgent tasks.
There was a man standing in the middle of the set, black pants, white flowing shirt and long blonde hair. He turned to look at me and sighed with exaspertion. He strutted up to me and asked where I had been, and dismissed me before I could reply.
The stage was set, the play had been practiced and we were getting prepped for the final show. We were one act out of dozens meant as part of a variety show. It was a graduation event and the show was run by students. As I walked around the set with him, all the people around us began to look more polished and prepped for the big night, costumes and sets getting more elaborate.
Then all of us, the man and I and all the others behind the stage, strolled out onto the stage to the applause of hundreds. The crowd was a faceless mass of people clapping as each set of performers strolled to the front of the stage and bowed. Then it was our turn and as I bowed I spotted friends and family in the audience, and knew I could’t perform.
As I turned to the man to try to talk to him about the show, he kept slowly edging his way off the stage, and down the wings of the auditorium. I followed him up until I realized that I was in the same row as my family, and just sat down next to them, watching the stage.
The performances started but they just blurred together as if they were all on fast forward and playing at the same time, props and people shadows that overlapped and twitched, indistinguishable from the rest in any meaningful way. Then the play that I wrote began, and a woman with dark hair came forth and sung.
Her voice was lovely, but unremarkable, as she sang about summoning a perfect hero. I looked at my family and they were all watching happily, except the woman at the end. She looked at me and asked me why I wasn’t up there myself. I told her I just wrote the thing, which was a lie. I was supposed to sing, but I just couldn’t. She nodded and said it was probably for the best. If I had sung it myself it would have been a test of the audience’s patience.
I just rolled my eyes and left my seat to go check on how things were going backstage. As I slipped behind the curtain’s edge into the back area, everyone was runnign more frantic than usual. The props were warping and changing in their grips, the colors shifting, and the woman and man kept frogetting the next line or screwing up the notes.
Then a new man stepped out of the shadows. He was rotund and jolly and dressed in a tan suit. He waved his hand and the colors settled and the props stopped fighting. Then he called the woman over to him and gave her a small round fruit. He told her that she had to sing to save the world. As he said this, there was a massive horrible cracking sound that echoed around the room.
She quickly ate the fruit and stepped back out onto the stage. Suddenly her hair was illuminated and in all the colors of the universe, flowing out behind her as if in an invisible wall of water. She sung and her voice was the most mesmorizing sound in the universe, instantly capturing the attention ov everyone, audience and stagehand alike.
The large man nodded and quietly stepped out of the back door. I followed im into the alley where he stood looking anxiously around, occasionally glancing up. the sky glowed with a golden light, stars visible amongst an endlessly rolling cloud of golden nebulas and bits of asteroids.
As I watched the swirling sky, a small creature rushed over the top fo a nearby building and flew frantically at the man. It was as bright and colorfula s the woman’s ahir had been, but was too small and moving too quickly for me to see what it was, so it looked like a ball of energy flitting nervously about as it spoke to the man.
Then he yelled loudly, accusing the thing of not being fast enough as the sky above us warped and turned purple. A wave of force, almost invisible except for the purplish tinge it gave everything, pushed down on us from the sky. He put his hands up and stopped it immediately, leaving the wall of glowing purple rolling only a few feet above our heads.
He yelled that the woman needed to sing louder, that the world had to be saved, and the small ball fo energy rushed into the building. Then we could hear her voice clearly through the walls, and the world began to break. Massive cracks snaked accross every surface, and the quanity of space debris in the sky increased dramatically. Some bits of floating rocks looked distinctly like buidlings.
the man shoved against the purple force wall and it shot back up into the sky and dissipated. He sighed with relief, but didn’t even get a chance to bring his hands back down before the purple force came back. This time it wasn’t a wall but the end of a large hook, and it slammed deep into the ground, sending shockwaves that destroyed all the buildings around us.
The seats of the auditorium, with the audience still sitting in them, began to float slowly up from the ground in a cloud of debris. The stage itself was gone, but all of the props, actors, and stagehands were still in place, performing as they too floated up and into the air.
The man groweled with frustraton and flew up and away. I followed after him and watched as he came to a stop hundreds of miles away, looking abck at the planet. It was reddish and crumbling in many places and hooked deep into the side of it was a massive fishing hook made of that purple energy. As we watched, the string on the hook tightened and the planet begun to drif away from the sun and into space.
I yelled that the people needed to stay near the sunlight, or they would freeze, and the man flew off, following the line until he reached some strange bluish figure at the far end. I saw him punch the figure until it let go of the string, and he came back and began to haul the planet back into place.
He pushed the planet too close this time, and I told him it couldn’t just be put back, it had to be put in orbit, and grabbed the string from his hands. I tugged the planet gently from side to side, nudging it closer and closer to its true orbit, hoping that I could get it settled before it was too late.
...Then I woke up.

Winx and White Washing
Tumblr media
Does the studio really have something against darker skin folks or is it just an over exaggeration by overly sensitive fans? Let’s find out shall we?
To be honest, I’ll just get to the point. Everyone is paler in this and I mean every single one! Don’t believe me?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean the yes, someone pointed out that some of the background characters, specifically in World of Winx are darker, but the thing is. Everyone, regardless of them being paler, still knows what representation the two are which leads to my main point. EVERYONE IS PALER! NOT JUST AISHA, NOT JUST FLORA! EVERYONE IS PALER IN THIS! AS WELL AS THE OUTFIT COLORS!
Even Musa, who is the palest one of the bunch, seems to be whiter in season 8 that she would make milk jealous!
The only reason why people point out Aisha and Flora are paler and not even bother to notice the other Winx are paler too, is because Aisha and Flora are darker skin. It’s also not even the fact the skin is lighter, the hair and some of the outfit colors are paler too, mainly the casual outfits. The only thing really dark on the characters in season 8 is the orange, purple, pink and green, because it wasn’t enough for them to turn the Winx into Walmart Barbie Doll rejects, they wanted to blind you as well!
People have pointed out that the background characters in World of Winx, least some of them were darker, including the villain mermaids, but I think this more has to do with style too because again, ALL THE WINX are paler in that as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wouldn’t even say the colors are paler but more so faded out, with the dark being in the outfits and hair, probably to give it that classic culture look. As for why some of the background characters are darker, probably this is a stylistic choice that is actually very common in anime and Disney movies. It’s to make the main characters stand out. It’s easier to spot the main characters if the main cast are brightly colored and easy to spot amongst the darker faded backgrounds and in crowds of people. Again, if it was done out of discrimination, Aisha nor Flora would be as focused on as they were nor treated as respectful strong characters. Even with their paler coloration, everyone who knows Winx would know what representation Aisha and Flora are. so it wouldn’t even make sense to make them paler for a discriminatory reason. They can’t hide it, they know fans know these characters and shoot, with just the hair style and hair color Aisha and Flora have, people know very well what race they are representing, regardless if the skin is lighter. People automatically know it!
Tumblr media
(In fact, honestly, I think Tecna lacks the most development in WoW if we were to really be honest. She always gets the slack. Flora and Aisha are the more popular characters.)
Also, the darker skin characters that they do have like Tiger Lily here wouldn’t be as bad ass or respectable as a character if it was done intentionally for a hateful reason. They’re still seen as strong, powerful and even wise characters and again, ALL the Winx are given this same, faded out, brighter treatment. It’s just because again, Aisha and Flora are darker, is the real reason why people complain.
I know some people will disagree or a lot will say “It’s still white washing regardless how cool they make the character!” And I say “Then guess what! They white washed all the Winx then by that logic because they’re all paler too, including most of their frickin’ clothes and if you want to ignore that, than you’re basically proving that you have some bias ideals yourself!” All the girls got the same treatment! All the Winx became paler so if it’s about equality, there’s no need to complain because even the clothing colors got washed out too!  If it was just the skin, I may reconsider this but it’s not. It’s also their hair and clothing and I know they don’t wear the same exact things as the older seasons, but like with the denim Bloom wears and what they usually wear, you can tell the color changes within the outfits.
I’m all about feminism and equality but here’s the thing. It’s important to know the difference between real prejudice intentions and what is not because so many people who claim to be feminists, end up being just as vile as the people who are really against equality and freedom. In fact, they’re on the same boat just reasons switched around. There’s too many people like that, which is why it’s important to know when something is and when something isn’t prejudice.
To me, being all the Winx got paler and faded including their hair and even clothing in World of Winx and Winx season 8, I conclude it wasn’t a racist intention. If it was just their skin that was paler, maybe but it’s not. To me, I think people are just so sensitive and want to look for something racist or prejudice that they end up seeing nothing but that, while ignoring the important facts that debunk this reasoning.
If you honestly still think it’s white washing, go ahead and believe that and you can go ahead and say how ignorant or other colorful language you have in your vocabulary about me. (Ya see what I did there? Haha...) There’s a reason why I don’t look at notes when I post these things because I really don’t care what people say about me. I’ve been called all kinds of things under the sun and criticized as wrong for having an opinion. So what’s stopping ya? Ya’ know?
Before anyone says “I don’t understand what it means to be discriminated for my race” because that’s another one people scream at me when I don’t agree with something they believe is a race related issue, I do. I’m Asian American and Native American mix. In case you don’t realize, Asians and Native Americans are often the ones getting the most ignored and the least represented in Western culture. As well as I’ve been personally discriminated at for being biracial and so if you honestly really don’t think I understand because I simply don’t agree with you...
Tumblr media
But I personally think that this is just a case of “oh the darker skin characters are slightly paler in a different style! Let’s riot!” and ignoring the facts staring them in the face. I’m not even joking! In Precure, people rioted for Cure Solei’s plushie being slightly lighter despite colors translate slightly differently in plush form...
Tumblr media
So yeah, that’s what I have to say about it. I’m sure I’ve made some or a lot of people mad for disagreeing. I’m not gonna change my views for something that should be obvious. I also would like to point out that I think it’s even more pointless ranting on about it being white washing when it’s an Italian cartoon and most people moaning about it are from America, where we kinda have no power over trying to fix problems like that. Italians may have a different view on said subjects, so that’s another thing on why I am tired of the moaning. It’s not in our hands! We have absolutely no say in it! It’s not like Disney where if they make us unhappy we vote to retaliate and boycott their stuff! We’re not the main demographic for the show! Rainbow is like “Okay, we’ll let you show our crap in English!” that’s it! They can just get revenue from those in their own country alone and it’s probably cheaper that way too!
So that’s my rant! Seeya in the next review!

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #63
This isn’t really a full rec post, just sort of a wrap up of loose ends. You could say I’m going on hiatus from making recs until my situation changes and I have more time for fics. I’m just gonna stick the recs I hadn’t previously put in a list here, as well as some general recommendations, and finish up with Previously Recced Fics That Updated.
Rules: You can find past weekly rec lists here, and non-list recs in my general fic rec tag. Also follow @maychorianrecs for individually tagged posts, the easier to search and reblog. This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!
A Sound Like Thunder by Bandity Words: 8,959 Author’s Summary: Hunk’s alone, stranded on a planet with no way to communicate and the world around him is being blown apart. But he knows his friends will come for him. Right? Part 2 of the Senses series, but you don’t have to read the first story to understand this one. My Comments: Absolutely fabulous hurt!Hunk fic with a hefty dose of hurt!Lance as well. The situation was incredibly tense and suspenseful, and the resolution was utterly satisfying. Poor Shiro, too. It’s all good stuff.
Smile by IcyPanther for Bandity Words: 3,661 Author’s Summary: Lance glanced at the mirror. Maybe it wasn’t as bad as he was remembering. Like, the first glance had freaked him out but it really wasn’t that noticeable. He worried his lip in indecision before finally making his way over to the mirror. He had to know. Just… just a peek. Without further ado Lance gave a tentative smile. And despair crashed down once more. My Comments: Poor Lance. Though his issue seems minor, it really isn’t. I love Hunk being there for him no matter what, and Keith trying hard to be a good friend even though he doesn’t really get it. And Coran swooping in at the end for the win, too. Great comfort all around.
Collect Call by LittleWhiteTie Words: 2,479 Author’s Summary: Unsure of what to do about Shiro, Lance calls Keith. The boy on the screen is wearing his old black t-shirt instead of his Marmora uniform; his bad hair is even messier than usual. “Did you need something?” Yes, but for once, Lance’s words have left him. What’s he supposed to say? Hey Keith, I want you to come home because I feel like something might be wrong with Shiro, but I can’t even figure out what the problem is—if there’s even a problem to begin with. Hey Keith, I want you to come home because I’m not you, and Shiro won’t talk to me again, no matter how hard I try. Hey Keith, I want you to come home because I miss you, and I don’t want to deal with this alone. Nope, not happening. “I—I can call back later.” My Comments: I love the way Keith and Lance’s friendship develops here. Very lovely post season 5 fic with great character development and realistic dialogue.
Sounds of Darkness by IcyPanther for CrownsofLaurels (laurel1020) Words: 8,635 Author’s Summary: Lance couldn’t see. Or hear. Or move. The silent darkness was all encompassing and it was pressing in; choking him, drowning him, blinding him. He screamed but it was swallowed whole into the void of nothingness. Lance trembled, pain shaking his limbs, and faintly wondered if he’d even made a sound at all. My Comments: Lance’s suffering in this one is particularly visceral, but the recovery and comforting afterward was suitably intense, as well. I’m a big fan of Shiro and Lance platonically cuddling. Totally worth it.
With All But His Soul by Resamille Words: 28,849 Author’s Summary: Somewhere along the line, Lance lost himself, replaced with something fierce and foreign. The worst part? He can’t bring himself to want to go back. Like this, he’s improved. He’s a fighter, a perfect soldier. No more nightmares. No more homesickness. No more weakness. It’s better, that way. He’s better. My Comments: This fic is dark. I’m not sure I like it, but I do admire it. It sucked me in and I couldn’t stop reading, even as dread and horror built inside me and I began to suspect that I would not enjoy the ending. And I didn’t. Still, it’s an amazing piece of fiction, very well-written and compelling, and if you’re in the mood for something tragic and disturbing, this is the fic for you.
Forge Fire by squirenonny Words: 19,745 Author’s Summary: Keith thought he’d passed the Trials of Marmora, but when he approaches Kolivan looking for information about his mother, he learns there are four more Trials to pass before he can call himself a Blade. Kolivan, Antok, and Thace watch as Keith undertakes the remainder of his Trials, and they remember their own Trials—a grueling ordeal from which no one emerges unchanged. They cannot aid him in the Trials, but they can help him prepare, and they can help him through the aftermath. After all, the Blades are kin, and kin does not let kin suffer alone. One part Dads of Marmora, one part Kolivan introspective. My Comments: I adore the worldbuilding and the emotions and the backstories and the characterization and everything about this, basically. Kolivan’s perspective is so warm and rich, and Keith’s desperation to belong is palpable. The ending was ridiculously satisfying, too, and I just… This story feels GOOD, y'all. You should definitely read it.
Faces of Home by IcyPanther for glitteringconstellations Words: 6,238 Author’s Summary: There were murmured, familiar voices when Lance awoke that quieted almost immediately when he blinked open his eyes. “Easy, easy,” someone soothed as he tried to sit up. Someone familiar. Lance gasped. “Mamá?” Because somehow… somehow he was home. / Lance is injured in a fight against the Galra and wakes to find himself in the care of his family. But… how did he wind up back on Earth? Something isn’t quite right… My Comments: I love it when Lance gets familial comfort and love, even from unexpected places. This got me hard in the feels. So good.
A Long Night by VelkynKarma Words: 2,359 Author’s Summary: A missing scene from “Failsafe.” Shiro takes care of a very ill Ryou while the others are away, but it’s not so easy to do when he just wants a few hours of rest for himself. My Comments: Part of a previously recced series. This installment is just straight cuddling and comfort in the middle of a horrible period in the story, and it’s everything I love. I adore this.
As Cold as Ice by A_Zap Words: 4,326 Author’s Summary: Keith scoffed when Hunk warned him and Pidge to never make Lance truly angry. After all, Lance wasn’t scary. He was like his element: flexible, playful, and able to let things go as easily as ripples in water. Plus, at the end of the day, he was too nice to ever really do anything when angry. Keith had forgotten that water could be just as terrifying and unforgiving as any wild fire. My Comments: Fun fic with Lance being scary and protective and Keith being astonished. Hunk and Lance are totally the scariest when they’re angry, I believe that absolutely.
At a Loss by FroldGapp Words: 2,189 Author’s Summary: Coran sees the gulf grow ever-wider between Keith and his fellow paladins and decides it’s up to him to cheer the red paladin up. It’s time for an intervention of sorts from the universe’s most gorgeous man. My Comments: My heart aches for Keith here so much. I wish he was a little better at communicating so he could tell the others that he’s having a hard time. But I love Coran noticing all on his own and doing what he can to ease things for him.
Bonded to the Bone by spitfire00 Words: 3,322 Author’s Summary: Pidge is missing, the Green Lion is angry, Matt is heartbroken, Voltron is useless, and Pidge may have inadvertently become god of the forest in the meantime. My Comments: Very cool visual images here, I like this concept a lot. And of course reunions and hugging are nice, too.
yellow by m_barcelona Words: 2,654 Author’s Summary: “I, um…I don’t really know what to say here. I guess I should start at the beginning.” Hunk clears his throat and looks away from the blinking red dot of the camera, suddenly feeling trapped by its unnerving stare. This is going to be harder than he thought. Hunk decides to send a video message home to his family, and discovers a lot about himself in the process. My Comments: Hunk is the best. I loved this look into his heart and mind. It felt very intimate and warm.
So here’s the general part. While I don’t have quite as much time for fics, I’m still reading, just authors and stories I’m already subscribed to. Below is a list of the authors I read no matter what they do, because it’s always amazing. BUT THIS IS NOT EXHAUSTIVE.
There are LOTS of good gen writers who are not on this list. PLEASE don’t miss out on good fics just because I’m not posting them. Look for yourself. Try every story currently on @maychorianrecs and then follow the authors to see what else they’ve done. Follow their bookmarks. I’ve found tons of fantastic stories by reading the bookmarks of authors I like, then following THEIR bookmarks, and so on. It’s like following a trail of Good Stuff, and I’ve wiled away many a pleasant day doing that.
Also, @bosstoaster made a filter that removes almost every ship in the Voltron fandom on AO3, so you can find just the gen stuff (with rare canon pairings). Here it is, it’s amazing.
But anyway, the (mostly gen) Voltron authors I am subscribed to at this particular point in time:
VelkynKarma  IcyPanther squirenonny ashinan Bandity birdzilla buttered_onions ChaoticReactions (BossToaster) Emerald_Ashes isabeau25 mumblefox Rangergirl3 WashiPuppy wingedflower yet_intrepid
Some of those folks, particularly Velkyn and IcyPanther, have written some really incredible stories recently. I’m just saying, you don’t want to miss out.
Okay, and here’s the last thing.
Previously Recced Fics That Updated:
mostly void, partially stars (33063 words) As Color Fades Away (317695 words) Shadows of Stars (236851 words) Little Crystals (22176 words) Fusion Confusion (26040 words) The Field of Blood (37587 words) A Dragon in Thy Pocket (14380 words) Young Blood (12360 words) I'm Your Captain (11878 words)
