Down the Rabbit Hole part 15 (nsfw elements)

"You’re flinching every time you pull the trigger,” Elena points out, and I shake my head, feeling the bulky, oversized ear protection wobble with the momentum.

“I know,” I mutter under my breath, knowing she won’t hear it. I take aim at the target again, holding the pistol steady, and fire a second time.

I flinch, my muscles jerking in anticipation, and the bullet goes wide. I feel more than hear Elena sigh next to me. The alarm sounds, signaling the range is cold, and without thinking I clear the chamber and eject the magazine in one smooth motion, laying the pistol down on the table in front of me.

I turn and see Elena frowning down at me, looking confused. Her eyes flick between me and the pistol, and she opens her mouth to speak, but before she can say anything Makado stalks around the corner, looking mildly peeved.

“Roan,” she says, “if you can’t even hit the target I’m not going to be able to issue you a pistol.”

I blow out a big sigh. “Look,” I tell her, trying to keep my voice level, “I’m sorry, but I’m just not good at this. It isn’t like I’m trying to miss. Maybe it’d be better if I didn’t have a pistol.”

“You don’t understand,” she explains. “If you don’t have a pistol, they won’t let you come on the mission. It’s a regulation and I can’t bend it. You have to have a personal defense weapon of some kind.”

“She’s right,” Elena chimes in. “Everyone has to be armed, just in case. But you have to qual first, and…”

“Okay!” I snap, then choke myself back. “Okay,” I repeat. “I get it. Thank you. Just give me a little…give me a little time to practice, okay?”

Makado checks her watch. “Look, I can give you half an hour. After that I’ll be back, and I have to see you get at least four shots in that circle,” she points. “I’m sorry, but that’s just how it is. So…” she trails off. She shrugs. “Good luck.”

Then Makado is gone and the range alarm sounds again and sporadic gunfire begins to ring out again from the other lanes. I shut my eyes and squeeze my hands shut tightly until I can feel my fingernails begin to dig into the meat of my palm, and then I breathe out, and let it go. When I pop my eyes open, I see Elena standing there, leaning up against the wall of the booth, her gaze piercing. “There’s something you aren’t telling me,” she says. I frown at her, hoist what I hope is an innocent expression onto my face, and begin to load a magazine from the little box of nine-millimeter ammo she brought for me.

“What do you mean?”

“You knowhow to do this,” she gestures. “I hadn’t taught you how to clear a firearm, how to eject the mag…how to load the mag,” she says, gesturing. I slot another bullet into the magazine, turning it sideways so I can see how full it’s getting through the cutouts. Four more bullets. “But you’ve done this before.”

“My dad liked to hunt,” I tell her. There, it’s full.

“Are you just pretending to flinch? Is that what this is, are you trying not to qual?”

“It isn’t that,” I tell her. I slot the magazine into the pistol and rack the slide, flick the safety off. I take aim again briefly. I squint past the sights at the target roughly 25 yards away. Inside the line, Elena had told me earlier. Touching it doesn’t count. And I have to hit four of these.

I squeeze the trigger and flinch again. The shot punches into the upper right corner of the paper target, far outside the line. “Goddam it,” I mutter.

“What aren’t you telling me?” Elena asks. I glance over at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Why aren’t you hitting these shots?”

I laugh. “Because I’m bad.”

“No,” she says. “That isn’t it, there’s something else. What -“

“You ladies need any help?”

“Go away, Slate,” Elena growls. I turn round; there’s the tall blonde prettyboy I’d seen earlier when Makado first brought me into the barracks, except now he’s got a shirt on. Name of Slate…something. Don’t recall his surname. He’s got that typical West Texas blunt-faced handsomeness to him, with a twangy, almost hilariously stereotypical accent and a deep, deep tan. He looks like a rare species of fox that lives out in the oilfields somewhere.

“None of my business,” he says, spreading his hands. “Be a shame if you didn’t get to go on our little adventure cause you couldn’t qualify, though.”

I roll my eyes. “Look,” I say to Elena. “Is he a good shot?”

“Yes, but -“

“Beggars can’t be choosers,” I tell her. “Yes,” I say to Slate, “I need some help.”

Elena shakes her head at me and walks off, and Slate presses himself into the small booth next to me. “Go on ahead and pop off a few shots, let me see what I’m working with.”

Well, there’s no way to get around it. I fire again; this time it’s closer but I still flinched. “You’re flinching,” Slate says, and I roll my eyes.

“Yes, I know. Help me stop.”

“It’s a mental thing,” he says. “You know the gun’s going to kick, you know it’s going to buck. You just got to convince your body it’ll do the same thing every time, that’s all. Here, maybe if I -“

Slate comes and stands behind me and puts his arms around beneath me. His tough, calloused hands gently cradle my wrists, and then his fingers wrap around mine. He smells like cologne. I open my mouth to say something and then cut myself off. It’s fine, it’s whatever.

“Now, little lady,” he says, “go on and take that shot.”

“Little lady?” I growl, but Slate nods towards the target, paying me no mind at all. His grip is very firm and his arms are as steady as granite.

“She ain’t gonna wait all day,” he tells me. “Go on, take the shot.”

It can’t be sure, but it seems as though he’s pressing closer to me than he needs to. I can feel his belt buckle and the hint of a toned chest as he holds my arms steady. “Okay,” I start, my voice a little unsteady, “if you could, like -“

“Slate,” Elena says, her voice like ice, “get out.”

His hands slip from mine and I set the gun down, catch my breath. “Aw, Lena,” he says, a smile crinkling his voice, “don’t be that way! I was just helping her to shoot straight -“

“You were grinding your dick against the small of her back,” she tells him. “And don’t call me Lena.”

Slate sounds affronted. “The lady asked for my help!” he says. “And I am hurt, woman, by the implication that -“

“Keep talking and I’ll break your nose,” she warns him, and Slate laughs and saunters off, giving me a nod on his way out. Elena blows a breath out and glances over at me.

“You know,” I tell her thoughtfully, “even though he’s a womanizer I’m pretty sure I didn’t feel his dick.”

I can see Elena flush and glance away from me, and for a moment, just a moment, I wonder about it. “The way he was holding you, it looked -“

“Look, we don’t have time, I say. Thank you for coming and helping a sister out, but I still am not going to qual,” I tell her, feeling the rising note of panic in my voice. “And if I don’t qual -“

“Hey, relax, calm down,” she says, putting a hand on the small of my back. I can feel the heat of it through my blouse.

“God dammit,” I growl, and pick up the pistol. I squeeze my eyes shut. Get over it, I tell myself. Get over it, get over it, get over it -

I open my eyes, take aim, and fire.

And again I flinch, and the shot goes wide. Doesn’t even touch the paper this time.

There is a pregnant silence and then Elena says softly from next to me, “look, Slate is an asshole but maybe his idea was good,” she says. She stands behind me just like Slate, puts her hands over mine. “Whenever you’re ready,” she tells me.

I blow a breath out, try and find some way to center myself. “Okay,” I mutter.

We go through a mag and a half before Makado comes around the corner. The last half a mag, I managed to get inside the circle. I’m breathing hard but I’m grinning, and when I turn around Elena is grinning too. “Good start,” Makado says, nodding to me. “Now try it without her helping.”

“What are the rules?” I ask. “It’s one mag, so -“

“One mag, meaning twelve shots, of which at least four need to be within the target. Hits on the line don’t count.”

“So thirty-three percent,” I mutter. “Okay.”

“You can do this,” Makado offers. She’s wearing her hair down today and her messy brown curls surround her face like a halo. I nod, forcing a semblance of determination down into my heart and I turn, pick up the gun, load it again, and then…

And then I do it. It takes the entire magazine, and my heart leaps up into my throat for the last shot, but I do it. Four clean shots, well within the target, away from the black bordering line. Elena lets out a whoop as I lay the weapon down and wraps me into a sweet-smelling hug, lifting me off the ground. I clutch at her, gasping with laughter and relief. When she puts me down her cheeks are flushed and her eyes, normally so serious, have sprouted laugh lines. She has a dimple, I notice, in her left cheek. “I knew you could do it!” she says, and I shake my head.

“I don’t think I could have without help,” I tell her.

“Good job either way,” Makado says. “Help or no help, you qualified. We’ll issue you a pistol when you head out tomorrow.”

“Will we see you at the party tonight?” Elena asks. I frown.

“There’s a party tonight?”

“Every time they have a big operation, the night before, they all get together and have a party,” Makado explains. “Why some of them, particularly Crookshank, think a hangover is a good complement to a trip into the Pit, I’ll never understand.”

“Crookshank is mostly unintelligible anyway,” I note, and Makado laughs.

“Yes,” she agrees. “But he’s a good medic, so we have to keep him around. To answer your question,” she nods to Elena, “no, I won’t be there.”

“Ah, so we can really cut loose, then.”

“Mm,” Makado grunts. “I’d be careful about that. The Sergeant gets back around nine tonight and I’m sure he won’t be happy.”

“The Sergeant?” I ask as Elena grimaces. She waves a hand.

“You’ll meet him, I’m sure,” she tells me.

“Enjoy the party,” Makado tells us, and then she saunters out of the firing range, leaving me and Elena standing there, looking at each other with more than a little fondness.

I think I’ve grown on her, although I can’t say in what way. Sometimes when she looks at me it’s as though she were looking at her little sister. Other times, though, if I didn’t know better…

“Am I invited to the party?” I ask her as we walk out, and she looks at me like I’m crazy.

“Of course,” she tells me. “What kind of question is that?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” I mutter, squinting against the bright sunlight. It’s about four or five in the afternoon but the sun still feels terribly high in the sky. “I didn’t know if you guys would want me there.”

“Of course we do,” she says, her tone serious. “I want you to be there.”

“Yeah?”

“Definitely.”

It makes me smile, hearing her say that, and without another word, we turn and head back to the barracks, her arm thrown over my shoulder and mine, after only a little hesitation, around her waist.

“You okay, kid?” Klaus asks, nudging me in the ribs, and I swallow hard before I think about answering. I can’t tear my eyes away from the mouth yawning in a bed of concrete before me.

I blink, keep my eyes shut. I hear Klaus shifting next to me, the plates in his excursion suit running over each other with a soft, subtle grinding sound. Mine are pinching just above my ass, and when I told the engineer-cum-tailor fitting me he’d shrugged apologetically and explained that this was as good as it was going to get, that they don’t make them slim enough to fit me properly and if he took out too many plates there wouldn’t be enough protection.

Which begged the question, of course, of protection from what, but there are some questions I still dare not ask, questions that even someone from Admin would know the answers to. Peter and Makado’s stories have been colorful but they haven’t been comprehensive guides.

“Hey, kid –“

“Who’re you calling kid?” I growl, and he laughs.

“That’s more like it. This is your first time, right?”

“Quiet back there,” the Sergeant snaps, and Klaus and I share a weary glance before we fall silent again.

There’s ten of us all told – eleven if you count the robot. There’s Peter and myself, obviously; Elena and Ellis and Fumi (short, I learned last night at the party, for Fumihiro), compact, sinewy Klaus and big, barrel-chested Crookshank; tall blond pretty-boy bastard Slate, who’d kept shooting me lingering gazes and sly grins at the party, which I dealt with by steadfastly ignoring him. Then there’s Max Euler, equally slimy but in a nerdier, more harmless sort of way.

And then there’s the Sergeant.

He broke up the party last night, storming into the barracks and snapping the lights on, sending bright multicolored winces flooding into our collective eyes, smacking the needle off of Fumi’s record player and making the shaggy cartographer groan. “We have an operation tomorrow, gentlemen,” he’d barked, staring around at us, a sneer curling his thick lips. “I want each and every one of you to be alert! If I hear one complaint about a hangover, it’ll be asses and elbows –“

And so on. His voice was low and gravelly and contemptuous, a clipped accent knotting his words, his eyes were like burning coals, the veins in his corded arms stood out like a caricature you might find on the cover of a heavy metal album, and generally speaking he was the most ridiculous and contemptible figure of a man I’d ever ran into. He bawled us out for a solid ten minutes before finally flicking his gimlet eyes over each of us before settling on me. “Miss Merriweather,” he’d said, spitting the word ‘miss’ at me as though it was a personal affront to him that I had no rank to offer, “a word outside if you please. The rest of you, I want lights off and everyone asleep in ten minutes!”

I untangled myself from my spot on the old, beaten couch next to Elena as languidly as possible and traipsed after him, watching as the tall, lanky woman rose and tried to compose herself.

Outside the barracks the cool night air was like a slap in the face. It did a little to sober me up but in truth I didn’t need it; I hadn’t drank very much anyway. The taste of alcohol never agreed with me, and the notion of not tasting the alcohol bothered me in other ways.

“Miss Merriweather,” the Sergeant said to me, turning around like a mountain might turn. “It is my intense displeasure to welcome you to my squad. I have been instructed,” he said, blowing out a harsh breath to indicate his sheer resentment at the gall of (I would assume) Makado to instruct him to do anything, “that you will be accompanying us into the Pit tomorrow. I want to make it very clear to you that –“

“Stay out of the way and don’t be a hassle, I’d assume?” I asked, my voice a little rough. He struck me as the sort of man who isn’t accustomed to being interrupted and I could see the muscles at the base of his jaw bulge as he clenched his teeth together.

“If you aren’t going to take this seriously,” he started, but I cut him off again.

“Don’t give me that shit, sir,” I say, voice heavy with irony. The alcohol made me ebullient; if I had been sober I wouldn’t have dared. “I might not have been down in the Pit before but I am far from useless. And I know for a fact you’ve got no weight to hold over me. I’m in Admin,” I said, praying that the words coming out of my mouth are close enough to the truth, praying that I’m not pushing this meatpile of a man hard enough that he’s going to snap and strike me, “you’re in Sec. Don’t treat me like shit and I’m not going to give you any trouble down there.”

He loomed over me for a moment and for a terrifying instant I thought I might have misjudged his restraint, but I matched his gaze and after a moment something in those dark eyes softened minutely. He gave me a curt nod and turned to stalk away into the night, into the other barracks where, presumably, his quarters were. “We’re on the same team, Merriweather,” he tossed over his shoulder at me, and I gave his retreating back the finger, but I didn’t put much heart in it.

I stood out there in the cool air for a while longer and then I sat on the wooden steps and rested my chin in my hands, rested my elbows on my knees, compressed myself and relaxed myself. The door opened behind me and I scooted to the side to let whoever it was go by, but instead they sat heavily on the step next to me, and I saw Elena, still looking fairly smashed, giving me a coy little smile, and though I tried hard I wasn’t able to stop myself from grinning back at her. “Hey,” I said, and she said ‘hey’ back and then for a moment neither of us had anything to say to each other, and after only a second or so of hesitation she leaned over and rested her soft blonde head on my shoulder and I could smell the alcohol but it didn’t seem so bad.

“I couldn’t find you,” Elena murmured to me. “I was running around in there looking all over for you until I remembered that Sarge had dragged you out here.”

“Is he always so…”

Elena laughed. “So much of an asshole?”

“Mm,” I grunted. “I guess.”

“Yeah, basically.”

“Why?” I asked her. She frowned at me.

“Why what?”

“Why is he an asshole? If he’s supposed to be your leader –“

“Ah,” she said, waggling her finger at me. “There’s history you don’t know.”

“Oh?”

“Yes. See, he was gunning for Veret’s position when the last guy in charge of Sec retired. But Veret ended up getting it because, and get this, HR has a quota for legacy employees for some fucking reason. You know anything about that?”

I shook my head, kept cool. “I haven’t heard of it.”

“It doesn’t come up very often. Basically if you were around for the disaster and you’re trying to get promoted you get preference over people who weren’t.”

I thought about that for a moment. “Huh,” I said.

“Yeah, it’s weird, right?”

“Well, I’ve never heard of any other company that does that kind of thing.”

“Me neither.”

We lapsed into another cozy silence. I looked over at her after a moment. “Is the Coast Guard part of the military?”

Elena looked up at me with a tiny smirk on her lips. “Yes, it is,” she said.

I blew my breath out, a quiet little laugh. “I thought it was,” I say, “but I wasn’t sure.” I reached over and smoothed her hair out of her eyes. I savored the softness of it on my fingers and then let my hand fall.

“Are you nervous? About tomorrow, I mean.” I asked her. She shook her head, putting the hair right back in her eyes again.

“Nah,” she said, but her words had a bluster to them that I wasn’t quite able to believe. “Are you?”

“I’m terrified.”

She blinked, looked at me a little more lucidly. “Hey,” she starts, “are you - ?”

I didn’t know where she was going with that until she reached up to my face very gently and wiped a tear away from my cheek and then my cheeks were burning and I blinked the tears from my eyes, furious with myself. Clearly she could see something of it in my eyes, because she put her arms out and caught me when I tried to get up; her arms were strong and I let her hold me even though I felt ashamed. I looked away from her for a long while but she put an arm back and brought herself more upright, leaning away from me a little. When I snuck a glance at her I saw her staring right at me so I looked away quickly.

At least she looked more concerned than uncomfortable. She asked me what I was crying for and I told her it was nothing, and then she asked me if I was scared I’d get hurt down in the Pit and I said that I supposed I was but that wasn’t why I was crying.

Then she laughed at me and asked why the hell I was crying then, but not in an unkind way, and I looked at her then, really looked at her, until she started to get uncomfortable and shrink away from me and wonder what I was looking at, and then I said that I was crying because I hated that I’d met her when I’d met her and not earlier in my life.

I could see something change in her eyes when I said that and then she reached for me and took me in her arms and kissed me, and her lips were warm and firm and soft and it was not at all like kissing a man, not at all like it. I kissed her back, greedily even, and we struggled to our feet at some point, our lips still locked together, her hot tongue flicking against my teeth. I put my arms around her waist and pressed her back against the hard wooden door, and she made a quiet little purr somewhere deep in her throat that only urged me onwards. She put her hands on me, hesitantly at first, roaming downwards from my head and neck, her eyes staring into mine with urgent intensity, and when she grabbed my ass and squeezed as though it belonged to her I moaned, I couldn’t help it, and her smile caught the moonlight like the edge of a still lake at midnight. My heart was beating like it was going to fly away and I could feel myself panting with the heat of my want for her, but I somehow managed to push her away.

“We can’t,” I’d said, looking around, feeling suddenly exposed there in the light above the door, the whole of the world at my back. “Not now.”

Elena had sighed exasperatedly and gave my ass a light slap that sent goosebumps racing down my legs before she tugged me away and around the side of the barracks, staggering with me because neither of us could wait to kiss each other again, and then I had put my hand up her shirt and under her sports bra and she had put hers down my sweatpants and we clutched at each other desperately there in the dark, her fingers tracing circles over me and then, when I begged her for it, made their way inside me, and we stood like that for what felt like a blissful eternity until finally I had cried out softly in the night.

Once I had composed myself I kissed my way down her stomach, tugging down her leggings as I went. I only hesitated for a moment, but she still told me that I didn’t have to, and I told her to shut up, that I wanted to make her cum, and then she knit her hands into my hair and held me to her while my inexperienced but eager tongue lapped at her. It took me a little while to find the best way of doing it but when I did she cried out and then clapped a hand to her mouth, and I laughed against her there, still on my knees before her. I rolled her clit on my tongue until she bucked against my lips, and then we went back in and fell asleep in our cots, and though I ached to hold her it was enough to be able to look over at her in the cot next to mine and see the way she smiled to herself, eyes shut and peaceful.

There she goes, waving at the rest of us in an ironic salute through the small plated windows of the gondola car. Her eyes linger on me and I smile at her through the window, but before I can see if she smiles back the sunlight strikes the glass at an oblique angle and I no longer can see her.

Six at a time can fit, so it’s just us left - me, Euler, the Sergeant, Klaus, and the robot, which Euler has informed us all is named Joker. It’s a pun, he says, of some kind, but it only makes sense in German so he doesn’t share it with us.

Should I feel more strongly about it, about my first experience with a woman? I felt a wrenching in me when the Sergeant had gestured and Elena’s hand had slipped from mine, from where it had lived for the last hour or so, down near our waists, fingers intertwined surreptitiously, but last night it hadn’t felt like a threshold crossed or a turning point. Should it have?

We hadn’t spoken of it. Elena had grabbed my ass when we passed coming out of the shower and I had thrown caution to the wind, the cramped stalls being empty and no footsteps echoing down the tiled hall to the left. I had grabbed her and tugged her into one of the shower stalls and kissed her there, pressed her against the wall, craning my neck upwards to meet her lips with mine, and she only pushed me away from her when I had bent my head to her breast and started to kiss her there as well, her voice a little shaky, her breath a little heavy, telling me that we had to go, that someone would walk in any moment. Then I’d grinned at her and sashayed out of the stall, putting a bit more lascivious of a roll to my hips than I usually do, feeling her eyes fixed on my buttocks like they’d been glued there, and then I’d wrapped the towel around myself and gone and gotten dressed with a smile resting in my heart.

I got a glimpse of myself in the mirror and stopped; the girl behind the glass stared out at me and for a moment I didn’t recognize her. The look on her face was too happy.

But when am I going to tell Elena that I have - ?

“Alright, you lot. The robot – er, Joker,” the Sergeant barks, glaring at Euler, “is heavy enough that it’ll need to go down by itself. Mister Euler,” he says, “if you wouldn’t mind walking Joker into this next gondola?”

“Oh, no, Sergeant,” Euler says with an apologetic smile that’s almost a smirk. “That’s not going to do. I’ll have to ride down with him.”

“And why is that?”

“This little remote,” Euler says, waggling it, “won’t reach all the way down there from the surface. It’s a good signal but not that good. I’ll need to ride down as well, to make sure there’s a constant connection.”

“Why the hell is that so important?” The Sergeant asks. “Can’t you shut it down for the trip or something?”

“Sure, if you don’t mind waiting about two hours for me to boot him up again once we get down there.”

“Gentlemen,” I say after a moment, glancing between them. “I only weigh about a hundred and forty-five pounds, even with this suit and all my equipment. Give me the remote, I’ll ride down with Joker, and the rest of you can take the next gondola. That won’t go over the weight limit, will it?”

“It’ll be close,” the technician at the controls over on the left says, looking over. “You said Joker weighs two-hundred twenty-seven kilos?”

“That’s correct,” Euler says, staring at me. The technician nods.

“That’s the best bet, then,” he says. “Even Specialist Herrera here,” he nods to Klaus, “weighs almost two hundred pounds with his suit and his rifle.”

“Well, Euler, how about it?” the Sergeant asks. “We’re burning daylight.”

“I really don’t think that –“ he starts, but the Sergeant gives him a disgusted grunt and snatches the remote from Euler’s hands, shoves it into mine.

“She’s a smart girl, aren’t you, Merriweather? She won’t break your toy, Euler,” he says. “Now show her how to work the damn thing and let’s get moving.”

Euler blows out a little defeated breath and squeezes past Klaus, comes behind me. He smells odd; not unpleasant, but odd.

“Let me show you,” he says. He puts his hand on the joystick and holds down a small green button simultaneously, presses the stick forwards with his thumb; Joker rises from its squatting haunch and stalks forward into the gondola, which creaks under the machine’s weight but still holds. “This button,” he says, pointing to a red one with a curious latch mechanism built around it, “is the safety for the remote. I’m putting it on now,” he says, flicking the latch over the button and pressing it down until it snaps into place with a tiny click. “And you can do whatever you want with all these buttons and nothing will happen,” he says, pressing the joystick four different directions in rapid succession. Joker doesn’t move a mechanical muscle. “Whatever you do,” he tells me, “don’t undo that latch until you have to get him out of the gondola. You don’t want him moving around in there.”

“Sure,” I tell him. Experimentally, I press a couple of the buttons myself; they have that oily feel to them that you sometimes get with very high-quality plastic, like my fingers are gliding over them.

“I’m serious,” he warns me. “Don’t undo the latch.”

“Yeah, I get it.” I pick up my pack and press into the gondola. I have to duck under Joker’s armpit but after that I have plenty of space in the back. I look back outwards and see Klaus flash me a grin and a quick thumbs-up before the Sergeant reaches up and seals the door in, and then it’s just me and Joker against the world, it seems. We hang there suspended for a moment before there’s a grinding noise and the gondola jerks to life and sends us slowly plunging into the Pit’s moist flesh.

Joker smells like machine oil and electricity, but he hulks there inert. I reach out after a while and put my hand on him; he makes little noise, a small hum and, I noticed before, a soft whine of servos whenever he moves. But sitting still like this? He’s practically silent. I can feel no vibrations rattling his metal hull, but when I press down harder, rest the bone of my palm against him, then I can feel it, a low subsonic buzz jostling my bones.

I’m avoiding the issue. I turn around, force myself to peer out the gondola’s window, and a fist seizes my heart and forces it up into my throat. My head had been throbbing just looking at the orifice but being inside it is worse. I feel queasy and squeeze my eyes shut and that helps a little, but then the gondola jostles to the left and outside there’s a click as a series of floodlights slam to life and I can see the wet pink lightly writhing surroundings in altogether too much detail.

I’m sure it wasn’t designed that way, but the concrete exclusion plate is good enough to be a work of art. The stark, alabaster white, boiling in the sun, throwing up heat so intense that the walkway down to it is shielded both from above and below by heavy canvas, the minute variegated cracks and imperfections like canyons and canals in the moon. As you walk you can see out the sides of the suspended walkway and you can always see the perfectly round aperture ahead of you, the tubes and machinery clustering around it like congeries of bubbles in seafoam spray, but you can’t see down inside of it until you get just above it, the concrete is thick enough that the angle has to be very close.

Then you get above it and you look down and you see down through the concrete and you look down the throat of the Pit, you see the pink, healthy-looking edge of the skin beneath the concrete, pink as anything, a soft brown of a tan towards the inmost edges where it gets no shade, you see the metal flanges and hydraulic system that they use to feed the thing its medicine, keep it asleep, keep it soothed and sedated, but when you force yourself to look at the center of it you can see for imagined and terrifying miles down into the center of the earth, pure black like the Pit were sucking the light out of the sky, and all the pipes and tubes and the chain system and rigging and scaffold for the gondolas are all vanishing down there into darkness.

If I had something better than my cheap, crappy back-up DSLR, if I had the time to set up a shot instead of someone jarring against my back while I tried to crane my neck over the side and stare down into it, I might have, for the first time in my career as a photographer, taken a photo that could have begun to approach art.

Maybe I’ll ask Makado if I can come back and take one, when this is all over.

I laugh to myself, standing there quietly, observing the rivulets of blood and pus and mucus dotting the windows, leaning up against Joker’s inert form, watching the raw, wet inside of the Pit’s throat slide by outside. I think I’ve mastered myself by now, I don’t think I’ll be losing my scant breakfast on the floor, but it was a near thing for a moment.

“Christ,” I say out loud. “This is a fine fucking mess I’m in, isn’t it, Joker?”

Joker doesn’t respond. I reach out and knock gently on that metal carapace but he doesn’t rise to my occasion, he’s too dignified for that. I heft the remote softly in my hand, feel the lightness of it. Wonder, momentarily, what happens if the remote gets lost or broken, down there below us in the Pit.

The lights inside the gondola flicker and then go out entirely, and then the gondola cranks to a halt, swaying lightly from side to side with misplaced momentum. I swallow hard and fumble with the radio at my hip, but before I can get it out of the holster it squawks at me and I jump.

“Roan?” a voice asks. “It’s Makado.” Her voice is grainy and distorted enough that I can barely make out that it’s her, but as soon as I hear it a flood of relief washes through me.

“Mak,” I breathe, then clear my throat, repeat myself a little louder. “Mak, I’m okay. The lights are out and the gondola’s stopped moving, what’s going on?”

When she clicks the radio back on I think I can hear yelling in the background. “Everything’s fine,” she says. “Electrical fault, this happens sometimes.”

“Uh…what’s going on in the background there?”

“Oh,” Makado laughs. “That’s Euler and the Sergeant bawling each other out. Euler is a little upset that he couldn’t ride down with Joker and now that this damn thing’s shorted out again he’s terrified that something’s going to happen to his precious robot.”

“I see.”

“Yeah. I just noticed that nobody was very concerned with your wellbeing so I thought I’d just radio down and let you know we’re working on it, so just sit tight.”

“Thank you.”

“You alright?” she asks again, maybe noticing something in my voice, but I nod firmly even though she can’t see it.

“I’m fine,” I say, “just a little surprised is all. Thanks for the concern.”

Makado signs off and then I’m left alone with my thoughts. And with Joker, obviously, but he isn’t doing much to take my mind off things.

Will ballast fluid do anything? How much of it should I drink? I’d asked a couple of surreptitious questions but all that Makado had told me was that it could cure some diseases, yes, but HIV specifically? Who knows. They’d never tried. That it wasn’t a panacea, that there were limitations. That the scientists never could figure out exactly why it cured things, just that it did. That if you synthesized it in a lab it wouldn’t but if you took it out of the Pit it did.

I can keep butting my head into it for as long as I like but at the end of the day the fact of the matter is that I’m not going to know until I try, until I sneak out of the goddam tent and slurp up some of that ballast fluid (my stomach revolts even thinking of it but I can do it, I know I can do it, I can make myself -) and then get back without anyone noticing. What other choice do I have?

Well, to not drink it. To just let…whatever happens happen. I don’t have AIDS, not yet. And though HIV turns into AIDS I think it can take a long time sometimes. But that would require me to acknowledge that maybe I overreacted, maybe I was wrong…

Maybe the knowledge that I was going to die, no matter how artificial and caveated that knowledge was, made me feel like I had a purpose. Maybe that’s what I’m chasing, feeling that purpose.

Maybe –

There is a crunching whine of motors and servos and I turn very slowly to see Joker moving. His metallic, articulated hand is trembling and then as I watch it clenches into a fist. I can hear a small creak of stressed metal coming from it and I snap a glance down at the remote in my hand, wondering if I’ve pressed something on accident, but no, the lock is still very firmly in place.

The robot’s head turns and gazes, very clearly, at me, and I can feel a scream clambering up my throat.

Then the lights come back on and the gondola jostles back into life and we resume our downwards course. Joker’s fist is unclenched now, open as it was before, its head pointing straight ahead like an arrow. I wonder whether or not I imagined it, whether it was all just in my head.

The radio crackles into life again and again I jump, and hardly daring to take my eyes off of Joker I reach down and toggle it. “Hey,” I say, a little shakily.

“Hi,” Makado says. “You should be moving again.”

“Yeah, we are.”

“We?”

“You know. Me and Joker. Uh, can you get Euler on the line?”

“No, he’s sulking.”

“Wonderful,” I murmur.

“What was that? I didn’t quite catch that.”

“Nothing, it’s fine. About how much longer until I’m down there?”

“About ten minutes. Not claustrophobic, are you?”

“No, it isn’t that.”

“Was it something about the robot? I can grab Euler for you if you really want me to, but –“

“Um. No,” I say after a moment, “no, it’s nothing.”

A pause. “Are you sure?” Makado asks dubiously, and I groan to myself before I hit the button and answer.

“I’m fine, Makado,” I tell her. “Just a little spooked, that’s all. I’m fine.”

“Alright,” she says. “Hang in there, just a little longer.”

It really is only a little longer, and though I can’t bring myself to take my eyes off Joker for the rest of the ride down, he stays reassuringly still, and once the gondola hisses to a stop and Ellis throws the door open for me I even have enough confidence to step outwards and onto the squelching, wet, fleshy ground. Ellis is saying something to me but I can scarcely hear him; I am far, far too busy drinking in my surroundings with a mixture of horror and wonder.

The gondola opens out onto a small staging area atop the control center in the main gullet. There’s a balcony and a guardrail but other than that we’re exposed to the metaphorical elements. It looks as though everyone else has already taken the stairs down inside to the station; I can hear laughter and voices through the open hatch. Ellis and Fumi have stayed up here on the balcony, though.

It’s darker than I’d expected, for some reason. I guess all of the little informational diagrams and pamphlets always portrayed the Pit’s innards like they were properly lit, but it’s dark, and even though floodlights are dotted around the worn metal rim of the station here and there the pale cones they cast onto the ribbed innards of the gullet are entirely inadequate for getting a sense of the sheer scale of the place. The station is anchored to the sides by long outrigging pylons, recessed and greased. I can see where the hydraulics would activate and brace it if the Pit ever did decide to choke again, I can see the broad flat plates where they press against the throat, red and irritated-looking. There’s someone out there in a suit and a helmet, rigged to one of the pylons with a carabiner, a little maintenance car in the track slung below it, doing something with a tube and a wrench.

It’s quieter, too, than I thought it would be. I guess I’d assumed that there’d be an assortment of creaks and groans and squelches, various small organic noises, loud moans and roars and screeches, but it’s just like being inside a cave, with little unnameable and unplaceable drips and drops and soft wet sounds.

It smells fecund in here, not a terrible smell but one that is so overwhelmingly cloying and wet and organic that I find myself swallowing hard to try and keep my gorge from rising in response to the sudden thickness of the air. Ellis claps me on the back and I hunch over, hands on my knees, and just squeeze my eyes shut and focus on my breathing for a moment. “She alright?” I hear Fumi ask, and I nod as best I can, throw up a thumbs up, but it peters out after a moment as I can feel a cold sweat breaking out all along my back. I lean backwards and sit heavily, there on the roof of the station, and Ellis laughs.

“Shit, Fumi,” he says. “First time’s always the worst, huh?”

“Jesus Christ,” I groan. “How do you people breathe down here?”

“You get used to it.”

I stagger to my feet, dust myself off a little. Fumi’s right, you do get used to it after a while, and as long as I refrain from focusing on it…

“You want to get Joker out of there?” Ellis asks, and I nod.

“Right,” I say, and after a minimum of fiddling with the remote I manage to make him walk out of the gondola, and then Ellis slaps the return button and the creak of the chain starts again. We wait there another fifteen or twenty minutes or so until the last car arrives, Klaus and the Sergeant and Euler crowded together, Euler and the Sergeant still glaring daggers at each other. I see it hit Euler just the same as it hit me, and he spends a moment gawking around at his surroundings in wonder before I hand him back the remote and he spends a hurried five minutes or so inspecting Joker before he sweeps his thumb over the joystick and sends the machine marching forward and down the stairs with far greater skill than I’d ever be able to muster. The Sergeant gives me a look and ushers us forwards, and then we head downwards into the station.

‘Cluttered’ doesn’t even begin to describe the place. There is computer equipment, magazines, newspapers, takeout boxes, all clustered like mushrooms growing around the racks and racks of high-tech monitors and workstations. There’s a folding table and chairs set up in the back with what looks like a half-finished game of Risk laid out on it, there’s an ancient cathode-ray TV set on a shelf playing an old western movie that I don’t recognize. The guys who work there, all nerd-types with glasses (one even has a pocket protector and I have to stop myself from grinning at him) are all gathered around Joker fawning over him like he’s a sports car until Euler waves them away, but he does so indulgently, making the robot give them rude hand gestures until the Sergeant snaps at him and then ushers the rest of us through a door and into a much neater and cleaner meeting room in the back. He speaks brusquely to one of the nerds who’d followed us in and gets the slight man to rummage around in a cabinet until he pulls out a map of the Pit and unfolds it, laying it flat on the table.

“Alright,” the Sergeant says. “Everyone gather around. Now we,” he says, giving us all a significant glance, his eyes lingering on me and Euler, “are right here, at the Control Center in the main gullet.”

I crane my neck and peer at the map. It seems like the place he’s pointing is distressingly high up and for a brief moment I wonder what the scale on this map is before the Sergeant drags his meaty paw downwards to a spot that seems equally awfully far below us. “This is the sealed entrance to the copepod barrows. That’s where we’re headed. We can’t take an IAV, we’d need at least three of them in order to carry all of us plus Joker, so we’ll have to leg it. I don’t want to let those bastards know we’re coming.”

A couple of nods, grunts of agreement, and so on.

“We’ll be making our way down the old ruined organ trail,” the Sergeant says, tracing his finger down from the Control Center, “to here, which is close to a cluster of ballast bulbs, to make camp later tonight. Yes, I know, ordinarily we’ve got standing orders to steer clear of bulbs, so as not to get into any more encounters with the wildlife than we have to, but the reports we’ve been getting are that there haven’t been anything particularly dangerous in those vents in the past month or so, and if we wanted to make camp someplace else it’d have to be up here,” he says, thumping his thumb down on a different spot, “which would mean we’d have to detour another three hours out of our way, so we’re going to just stick to camping near the bulbs.”

“From there,” he continues, “tomorrow we’ll make our way over to the Cord and take that down to here, and rendezvous with the research team in the Deep Listening Station in Oyster’s Shame, they’ve stopped answering their radios so we’re going to check in on them. Nothing to worry about, just a mechanical fault most likely. We’ll stay there in Oyster’s Shame tomorrow night, and then the next day we’ll get to the barrows, grab the crystal, and hightail it out of there without taking in too much of the scenery. Capisce?”

I nearly burst out laughing but manage to turn it into a hacking cough. Elena pounds me on the back for a moment and though I almost go down on my knees from the force of it it gives me enough time to compose myself. “Capisce,” I say weakly, and there are a few more enthusiastic grunts of assent from the rest of the squad. Then we’re moving, down flights and flights of stairs, smell like mildew and wet paint, down to a staging area and then grouping up before a wide shutter-style garage door. One of the sleek elongated Interior Anatomy Vehicles, the IAVs, glowers at us in the darkness behind us. Everyone’s getting ready; I see Elena slip her helmet on and fiddle with her headlamp, I see Crookshank and Klaus check their rifles and their sidearms, I see the Sergeant double-checking everyone. It takes me a moment to get my helmet hooked on properly but once I do I raise the visor and feel a little more secure with it cradling my head tightly on all sides. I’m sure it’ll end up giving me a headache after a while but for the moment it’s nice.

“Miss Merriweather,” the Sergeant barks, turning around and glaring at me. “Have you got that camera ready?”

I hold it up and waggle it at him. “Say cheese, Sarge,” I say. I hear a few chuckles but he glares daggers at the rest of the team and they quiet quickly.

“Alright,” he says. “Let’s move.”

He hits the switch and the doors hiss open behind him, loud mechanical rattling filling the air until they come to a clanging rest in their recessed grooves in the sides of the bay. And then, for the second time today, I let the Pit swallow me whole.

House of M au - Redone (part 2)

N/A: Let´s continue this au. I think.

The Red Guard is a conception as old as Genosha itself-which is a bit ironic as Genosha is not as older as some people seem to consider- and Raven Darkholme is one of the few people that know how old Genosha truly is. Raven Darkholme is a shapeshifter and installs the idea of never asking a shapeshifter her/his age is a taboo that shouldn´t be disclosed.

Kurt Wagner Darkholme is one of few people to know sure secret and promises to take to his grave-an inside joke among son and mother-although, right now, his mind is far too focused on recent events to care for jokes.

Passing through some of his co-workers. Kurt slams the door to his mother´s office and is a pair of golden eyes look out, somehow bored at this entrance- Kurt has the mind to use his tail to close the door- and crosses his arms as he is ready to drop the bomb. "Who is Kitty Pryde?"

Raven Darkholme couldn´t be more bored with this question if she wanted. "Hi, son! how are you, son? Me? I´m fine, thanks for asking" her tone is dry as her eyes are back to the papers. You see, the Red Guards are all about action and it´s also involved in lots of paperwork.

Kurt doesn´t look too chastised at this. "I´m talking about Juggernaut´s accident...by the way, will Marko Kurt" and he looks deadpan by the fact a criminal shares the same name as him. "will be put in maximum security?"

Now, Raven shows her teeth. Is a fitting metaphor for the fearsome leader of the Red Guard. "Actually, Marko is powerless without his magic helmet...he´ll put in the common criminal cellar, along with the other common criminals" and her smile looks more devious. "As we´d inform him how his precious helmet is being melted...no more magic helmet" and Kurt arch his eyebrows at this.

"And it is?"

"Oh, Kurt...does it really matters?"

And this debate-and any moral implication- is deemed over. Well, Kurt Wagner disagrees. "mother, please" he pleads now and is unwavering sincere. "In the Juggernaut case...a woman, a civilian as far I can tell" and Kurt is showing such suspicious on his face is almost comic. Almost. "and she faces Juggernaut on her own and even had the nerve to ask for one of my swords ..." Kurt states. Raven is bored again.

"Kurt, if I were to give a fuck to every lady you meet that do anything to jump into your bed...I would be like this" and her face twist to an old crone with white hair and bad teeth. Kurt is not amused. "So, I do not see the big picture only you see"

"She stands Juggernaut...how many people can do that and be still alive?" and Kurt grins as Raven is no longer bored. "My point is, what if she´s from the Project X?" and now Raven is giving him her sole attention.

"Kurt, we dismantled that program way before you were even born. Way before Rogue was even born..." Raven commence. "Logan James Howlett is one of the last candidates...and he´s spending his life as a rich playboy...if, and I want to be clear here on the if, IF this woman is from the project X...why she would content herself in being a history teacher?" and Raven feels she struck a nerve on Kurt.

"Look, I´d not know. OK? Logan is a special case on its own. Maybe she wanted to have some normalcy...my point is: I need your permission to access the big data. I need to know more about this woman, if she´s part of the program X...we need to know...what if she gets some power up? Laura suffered that and if we´re not there...things would have turned grimly for everyone" Kurt concludes somewhat smugly. His reason has some base.

Raven rests her face on the palms of her hands. "Denial!" and it shocks her son´s to the very core. "I´ll not authorize privacy invasion for a flimsy excuse, yes, she may be from the program X, but, let´s be honest...there like 1% or less of a chance of being true...son, hear me out" now Raven is pleading. As a mother. Never as a leader. "the program was closed years ago. This Kitty Pryde is not from the Program X...but, if you feel there´s something wrong about her...you don´t need to use our data" she stops and looks at her only son.

"You´re Kurt Wagner" she starts in a sing-song tone. And Kurt starts to use the name Mom as a warning. "The heartthrob of Genosha...what lady would refuse such the Amazing Nightcrawler!" and she has a wide grin on her face and Kurt is completely bemused.

"Thanks, that´s useless"

"Anytime, son"

The Sunshine School is not one of the elite- even if the name gives this impression- and it includes many professionals that are doing their best for the future generation of Genosha. There´re a majority of mutant teachers- a rule Magneto created in his first year and is hard to ignore it- however, there´re some humans working in the school as well.

Right now, Jono Starmore is teaching the kids about telepathy. Of course, as the man is mute. His entire class is in silence- if one is to look from outside, it sure paints an odd picture- as the teaching carries on.

Jubilation Lee is watching the class- Telepathy 101- from afar and is not thinking the scene is too strange. She watches as Jono being still and showing little changes in his expression and makes the mistake of making a soft sigh. A mistake the other teachers caught on pretty quick.

"Oh, someone is in love!" Bobby teased. And Monet-who is doing her nails- didn´t need to look up to Jubilation or Bobby to see what´s the image is being folded. "Jubilee is so obvious. Too obvious...is pathetic and adorable at the same time" and Jubilee remembers she promised to the principal she wouldn´t kill Monet- she made a promise and she is trying to uphold. She´s trying- even if the temptation is strong.

"I´m not sure what you guys are talking about...I´m just happy we have a telepath that has some morals....unlike your old buddy, Emma...how is she, Monet?" Jubilee hissed as Monet looks unimpressed.

"Still being the White Bitch we know. We love and we hate" Monet summarizes the situation in one line. "And you? Done pinning over a silent boy?"

Kitty pipes in. Her coffee is not that great, but, will keep her awake until she has time to take a nice nap. "Hey, leave her alone. If she has a crush" Jubilee vehemently denies even if she´s blushing. "let her deal with that. Teasing will not help our dear friend who is crushing someone"

"Et Tu, Kitty?"

And there´s an easy feeling among them. Bad coffee is more agreeable if you have a good company. It even helps to forget problems in the past.

Jubilee changes the subject quickly. "So, Kitty...how was facing Juggernaut?" and people forget about Jubilee´s crush-for now- as they bomb Kitty with questions.

Payback!

"Uhm...it was ok...I meet Nightcrawler...also I saw Rogue punching Juggernaut"

"Rogue?! She´s the coolest!" they all agreed. _______________________________________________________________________________________

"I mean, you saw Rogue!" Bobby is walking with Kitty as they´re responsible to clean the small festival their class made. Bobby is almost jumping like a little boy who got a present way earlier. "How is she?" and Kitty almost laughs.

"No one going to ask if I´m alright?" inquires poorly faking being angry. Kitty is not a great actress.

"Are you Kitty Pryde, right?" is all Bobby can respond. They pick the trash-the students abused in ribbons and glitter for their small festival- and are moving outside to throw away in the correct garbage can. "I can totally believe you punch God in the face...you and Monet have that bitch energy"

"I´ll not take offended because I know you and Monet. So, instead, I´ll say ...thank you"

"But aside seeing Rogue in all her awesomeness. You meet Nightcrawler...is he as handsome as the photos promise?" only Bobby to make this question. No, actually, many people would make this question.

Kitty mulls for a minute. Oh, many ladies would say how handsome he is. Kitty? She has to think about it. "He has golden eyes..."

"Man...you see Rogue and Nightcrawler and didn´t get an autograph?"

"Nah...Rogue was too busy and Nightcrawler was working...plus, my students record the whole exchange" Kitty promises to show the videos if Bobby truly wants to see. Kitty didn´t even need to ask. However, as they´re about to return to the school. Something happens. Rather...someone happens.

"KATYA!" his Russian voice is too familiar to Kitty and it can´t be no one else but Piotr Rasputin. "Are you cheating me with this man?" and Bobby is really confused.

"I´m gay buddy, and even if I wasn´t...she doesn´t seem to want to see you" and this was the wrong thing to say as Piotr is furious and is marching like a bull without thinking twice.

Bobby´s ice is strong, sadly, for once...Piotr´s stubbornness is beyond any logic and the ice is the first victim. Kitty touches Bobby making him and her unchangeable. And she quickly phases him down as Piotr is not thinking clearly.

"So...that´s your ex?"

"That´s my biggest mistake!"

___________________________________________________________________________________________ Kurt is more than aware of his effects on women. He´s acutely aware how some ladies do eye him different-his big sister often jokes she can go anywhere with him without a lady trying to flirt with him- accordingly, follow his mother´s suggestion wouldn´t be an impossible choice, however, Kurt is trying not to be a manslut-there´re limits he needs to respect and he needs and wants the ladies to respect his own limits- Kurt wants to know more about this history teacher.

Arriving in her school wouldn´t be too stalkerish-Oh, he sure hopes not- as he wants to inform her about the Juggernaut's case-nothing fair in this scenario and certainly not problematic on his part- as soon Kurt arrives in the school...he sees a man cover in metal slamming his fist on the ground shouting the word "Katya" like a lunatic.

And Kurt has to rescue whoever this Katya is. Fighting a man with metal skin is a tricky situation- Rogue would punch his face and be done. Oh, how he sometimes envy her super-strength- But thanks to his swords and his teleportations prowess. The lunatic was defeated.

And a woman phased in with another man. Kitty Pryde looks at the unconscious Piotr Rasputin and back to Kurt. "He´s not dead...he´s drowsy...is he your husband?" Kurt asked not sure what to ask. He saw this behavior with abusive husbands in the past.

Kitty frowns. "No, thank god...what will happen with him?"

Kurt looks at her. She looks shaken-rightfully so- and at the same time, her eyes hold a fury-direct to Piotr. Not Kurt, an important detail to notice- and then looks at her companion. "If you press charge...he´ll be arrested and won´t be able to hurt you or anyone else ever again"

Kitty is looking at Bobby as if asking his opinion. "That lunatic almost killed us...yes, let´s press charge..."

Kitty looks ashamed. "I should have press charges way back" she mutters and looks way different from the first time Kurt saw it- Kurt won´t lie and say he has any sympathize for Piotr- "I´ll press charges as well" _____________________________________________________________________________________

Queen Wanda is not exactly happy to know her sons- her precious boys- were almost kidnapped and it was thanks to the wannabe kidnapper´s stupidity that this grim scenario didn´t happen. In fact, she´s happy it wasn't her kids or even an innocent kid.

However, she´s the Queen. And a Queen shouldn´t let this incident goes by without taking some action. So, Pietro and Lorna are discussing what could lead Juggernaut, of all people, to try to kidnap the princes of Genosha.

"Juggernaut is strong and dumb...so, he wouldn´t come with this idea alone...or would he?" Wanda begins.

"He´s not a mutant, right? Are we sure this isn´t just a case of Mutant envy? Look, you´re really, really powerful and some humans seem to think you can give and take powers" Lorna adds to the conversation.

"Are we sure this has nothing to do with our father?" Pietro asked and Wanda sighs as she knows where this will go. Lorna and Pietro have different views in regards to Magneto.

"Pietro, the man is not even here...why he would do this with his own grandchildren?"

"Why he would try to kill his own kids?"

"Enough!" Wanda cuts them before the argument gets uglies. "Pietro, Magneto is not here...and Lorna, Magneto will forever be a bad memory for us, please, respect this"

"Look...what if Wakanda influenced Juggernaut?" Pietro pipes in and Lorna seems to take this idea.

No one knew exactly when Mama Tegu moved into the Bystoma Bog. Though the bosses wouldn’t admit it, she’d probably been there quite a long time. She just hadn’t wanted to be seen. Whisperings spread of a frail guardian with a crocodilian face, draped in rags, who promised magic in exchange for...offerings. The rumors grew quite distorted and gruesome, and for a time Mama Tegu was little more than a bogeyman to keep youngsters from wandering too far into the swamp at night.

One such youngster, however, wasn’t deterred. A cartographer passing through the Windforge caught wind of the tales surrounding the mysterious witch and her boggy domain, and his interest was seized. Perhaps if he could map some of the infamous marshland, he could put the locals’ fears to rest--or give them truth.

Salvator didn’t find what he was looking for right away, but he did find...something. While surveying from the ruined top of a long-dead tree, a glimmer of something embedded in the bark caught his eye. Willing up some of his often-neglected Nature magic, he pushed the dead bark aside to reveal a large stone, cut in a series of simplified whorls and angular lines. Assuming it to be some sort of abandoned talisman, he reached out to remove it--

He couldn’t move.

Or, at least, he couldn’t move well. Something was binding his limbs, his wings, his jaw. With a muffled grunt, he attempted to push himself upright, but could only flail helplessly in the mire as his legs refused to obey him.

Despite whatever was covering his head, he could hear something approaching from the underbrush behind him. His chest heaved as his panic intensified, he was trapped, he was vulnerable, and he knew there were things in this swamp, things he should never have tempted, he shouldn’t have come here

“Well aren’t you in quite the mess, child.”

He heard a soft, drawling voice replace the rattling of leaves and branches. The voice felt wizened, ancient, and worn out. Yet it was gentle, like a mother chastising a youngling, and carried just a hint of amusement.

As best he could, Salvator flopped his head around to try and face the speaker. He caught a glimpse of golden rags, impeccably clean even in the muck. Wings draped in strings of bones, like a macabre windchime. A misshapen face, a snout far too long to belong to any dragon.

Mama Tegu.

His head collapsed back into the dirt, chest still heaving from exertion and fear. But he accepted his fate. This is what I get for wandering. I’m no wind dragon. What kind of mapmaker gets lost in a forest? Especially one born of nature flight?

“Looks like you ran afoul of an Augite stone, young’n. Heh, it takes some luck to find one of them that’s still awake and kickin’.”

The gravelly voice interrupted his thoughts and dragged him back to the present. Something was still binding his jaws, so he could only let out a muffled grumble in response.

Mama Tegu let out a wry chuckle. “Well, maybe’s luck’s the wrong word, young’n. But you’ve got some luck now for sure. Mama knows plenty of ways out of a snag like this, mmhm.”

She stepped closer to him, slowly circling the larger dragon’s bound form. He noticed she had a noticeable limp, and her wings looked thin and almost atrophied, as though they might collapse even from the weight of a few bones and strings.

“Only problem is, child,” she continued. “All magic’s got a price, even mine. Now I ain’t unreasonable, you understand, but it is polite to agree on these things beforehand. I know you can’t answer me yet, but since seeing a big ol’ lunk like yaself tangled up in a rock trap ‘s given me such a smile, consider this a little gift from Mama.”

She extended her claws towards Salvator’s face, and he cringed. Despite her pleasant demeanor, he was still having trouble believing that a senile, swamp-dwelling recluse could be so trustworthy. Unfortunately, he had little choice if he wanted to escape his bindings.

Mama Tegu let out a low hum as she passed her hand over his face. The tone of her humming dipped lower and lower until he could practically feel it rumbling the ground beneath him and the air in his lungs. He felt the pressure around his jaw loosening, and then it was free.

With a stifled cry, he opened his mouth as blood rushed back to his face. He rotated his jaw a few times; even though he hadn’t been trapped that long, the binding was tight enough--coupled with tooth-grinding stress--that his muscles felt cramped. After a few seconds, he felt ready to speak.

Mama Tegu had retreated and was now leaning against the very dead tree that had started this whole mess. She fiddled with some of the bones tied to her sash while she waited for him to regain his composure.

Salvator blinked and suddenly it seemed she was right in front of him again. He started back in surprise. Mama Tegu’s mouth turned faintly upward in a thin, calm smile as she stared at him. He felt as though she was looking right through him, right into him, and he couldn’t suppress a shudder.

“Hmmm. Isn’t that better, child?”

“T-thank you. Are you--” She cut him off before he could finish his question.

“Now hush. I ain’t done with you yet. And considerin’ you’re the one who came trompin’ into my marsh, I suppose I’m owed a question an’ an answer first, hmm?”

Her eyes hardened ever so slightly, and her voice took on a serious edge.

“What do you offer me for your freedom, child?”

Salvator’s eyes widened. He didn’t have much of value to his name to begin with, and he certainly didn’t bring any of it with him on his stupid, stupid expedition. He could probably offer to go back and fetch it, but there was no way in eons she would be foolish enough to accept that as an offering. And he was loathe to give up something far more...intangible just to escape a trap like this. If some of the stories were to be believed, that may well be his only option.

“I-well, you see--” His voice cracked slightly, and if dragons could blush he would have turned a spectacular shade of red. Her presence was so...intimidating, even though she was by far the smallest guardian he’d ever seen. It didn’t help that she was preceded by a reputation for making damning deals for one’s blood, bones, or worse.

He sighed. “I don’t know what I can offer. I have nothing of value, and I’m sure nothing you’d want anyways. If it’s flesh you want, I suppose one of my arms would be the easiest. I’m not sure if you’d want the soul of a failed mapmaker who can’t live up to his birth flight or his adopted one.”

For the first time in their interaction, Mama Tegu looked confused. Then a grin split her face, and a laugh ripped out of her throat, harsh and barking but no less mirthful.

“Ahahahah, you--ya think I want, what? Ya arms? Ya blood? Ya soul? Oh boy, child, those stores have been gettin’ pretty tall then, lemme tell ya. Hoo, by the Mothers, that sure is somethin’.”

If Mama Tegu has been slightly bemused, Salvator was absolutely stunned. His voice rose over her rough cackling.

“Well, then--then what do you want?”

Her laughter died down into a cough, and she pounded at her chest before it cleared and she regained her breath.

“Heh, ahem, sorry child. I ain’t laughin’ at you, just the ninnies that live in these parts, thinkin’ I drink blood ‘n steal hatchlings, whoo-eee.” She shook her head gently.

“As for my payment, well see that’s the thing. You gotta offer whatcha think you can give. An’ if I like it, I’ll take it, n’ we have a deal. Understand, child?”

Salvator pondered this for a few minutes. Even if she didn’t seem to be malicious, he knew better than to make deals and promises he couldn’t afford. He could feel his legs starting to sting beneath his bindings, reminding him of his predicament.

“What if...what if I helped you out with something? A favor for a favor, that sort of thing? There has to be something I could do for you to make up for this, since I don’t have anything I could give you.”

Mama Tegu turned away from him, stroking the bottom of her jaw thoughtfully. She let out another low hum as she considered. Salvator waited in tense silence, praying to every god he thought would listen that she would accept his deal, and not have something gruesome in mind for him as his task.

Finally, she turned back to face him.

“Hmmm, well it isn’t the kinda deal I usually take. If’n ya start takin’ favors no one ever offers real payment anymore. But you seem earnest enough, child, and Mama ain’t heartless. I tell ya what. Mama ain’t as young as she used to be, and these newfangled locals ain’t been friendly. You’re a young, strong fella, even if ya seem to have worse direction-sense than a mirror in a blizzard. But Mama knows these swamps like the back of her claws, and I ain’t gettin’ lost anytime soon. If you stay with me an’ help watch Mama’s back, child, I’ll free some o’ them bindings. An’ the longer ya stay, the more I’ll release ‘em. An’ don’tcha worry ya little head, I’ll make sure they’s at least loose. Comfortable enough so’s you can move n’ sleep alright. So, child, whatcha think, hmm?”

He thought about the implications of her offer carefully. “So...some of my payment is time, then?”

She shrugged noncommittally. “If’n ya wan’ see it like that, yes. And if’n Mama’s bein’ honest, she doesn’ mind the company now ‘n then.”

There was a beat of silence between them, the humid air heavier than usual. Salvator swallowed thickly. He really didn’t have any other choice. He doubted he would get a better offer than this, surely.

“I..accept.”

“Child, you’re the one offerin’ to me. You got to say it.”

“A-alright.” The words were sticking in his throat. “Mama Tegu, I offer you my time and assistance, my company and aid, in exchange for freeing me from this trap.”

A satisfied smile creased her features, and a glow encircled her eyes. When she spoke, her voice seemed to have an otherworldly echo to it.

“The offering is good, the deal is struck. Under the sight of the Mothers may we both fulfill our bargain. Under the blessings of the Mothers may we serve each other as they do.”

Shadowhunters S2 — Episode 6

Meet the Iron Sisters! They all walk with military precision for some reason, but aside from that, they're kind of cool, especially when they start testing their creations.

These are Sisters Cleophas and Magdalena, and I had to look up the latter's name on the wiki, which makes me angry. They'll be relevant later.

Another Sister comes bearing the news of the attack on the City of Bones, and the Sisters move to reinforce the Citadel.

Clary and Jace are looking for the rune Clary used in the previous episode, but it's nowhere to be found. And honestly? I'm glad that we get to see them do actual research about this. Jace also admits that some runes are out of the Gray Book and are reserved to "elite members of the Clave", but that doesn't explain Clary knowing it.

"It appeared. Like a vision. Like someone or something was trying to send me a message."

They're even setting up Ithuriel! Well, I assume that's what this is, anyway.

But Clary has no way of knowing about her angel blood, so she assumes it's Jocelyn doing it from the afterlife. Which…well, they haven't really touched on that subject yet, so it'd be nice to do that now. But no, they just move on to re-establishing that they can't tell anyone else, not even Alec and Isabelle.

"The Clave is quick to prosecute anyone—or anything—they don't understand."

Cut to Clary and Isabelle talking about everything that's going on, and Clary noting how quickly Isabelle's wound healed. She brushes it off, and brings up that mission to the Iron Sister that was mentioned in the last episode, for which Isabelle is now cleared. Which leads into a tangent about what the Sisters are and all that good stuff. And honestly…as far as infodump goes, it works well enough, since Isabelle has this adoration for them that justifies her acting like a fangirl who wants to explain everything. So I'll give it a pass.

Clary, naturally, decides that she should go with Isabelle to see the Sisters, if only so she doesn't stay at the Institute to mope over her mom's death.

But before they leave, Isabelle goes visit Aldertree for a refill of yin fen. And Aldertree actually gives it to her, even though he 1) probably knows that she had more than enough, 2) can see that her hand is shaking (because standard addiction symptoms), and 3) should at the very least check her wound to see if it's healing well and whether she needs more drugs. I mean, come on, you just established that he was a medic last episode, and now this? No wonder he switched to being a "diplomat". Not that he's much good at that, either, but you get my point.

She also asks to have Clary join the mission, which Aldertree accepts, but he wants Isabelle to spy on Clary, arguing that Valentine may have experimented on her as well as Jace. Which, he's right, he just didn't use demon blood. But hey, let's not get into that. Oh, and he also more or less implies he won't give Isabelle yin fen unless she agrees. So…maybe he does realize she's addicted and is just an awful human being. That would not surprise me one bit, to be honest.

So Clary and Isabelle Portal to the Citadel, it looks really cool, and it's just the two of them, because when Isabelle talked about leading a "mission" there, I totally expected it to be just two people.

They get ambushed by a group of Iron Sisters, and they freak out when Clary reveals her identity. She points out she hates him, and they ask the Sisters if they have any clue what Valentine might do with the Sword, and…I guess that's enough for them. Also, Cleophas is revealed to be Amatis and Luke's sister (she actually mentions Amatis by name, so no, they didn't move Amatis to this place).

The girls have to go through a "purity trial", to make sure no demonic impurity can enter the Citadel. This is a big deal because Clary might have demon blood, but Clary will have none of it and jumps in the angelic pool to prove that she's fine.

Of course, the real impurity here is the yin fen that Isabelle's been using, so she gets in trouble when the goes in the pool, and is forbidden to enter the Citadel. Yep, of course they're basically punishing her for being an addict (which was more or less forced on her) by denying her her dream. And by "they" I mean the show's writers, not the characters. Like…I realize they probably just didn't think about the implications here, but it's still what they ended up saying.

phClary goes in with Cleophas, while Sister Magdalena tells Isabelle that this happened because of the yin fen, which is made with vampire venom.

"Yin fen will not heal you. Be careful."

Meanwhile, Clary tells Cleophas about what happened with Luke recently. Cleophas agrees that Luke may be in danger, and shows Clary what she came for: that the Soul-Sword can be used to…destroy all demon-blooded creatures as a last resort should the Shadowhunters fail in their task. Which admittedly makes more sense than it being able to control demons, although…the show already gave that power to the Cup anyway, so maybe it just realized it was being redundant.

So Valentine could kill all Downworlders with the Sword, if he can activate it with "angelic energies". Specifically:

"To activate the sword, it must be wielded by an angelic being and struck by a bolt of lightning."

How…specific. And why lightning? Would other forms of electricity work?

Cleophas tells Clary to keep this a secret from Downworlders, to avoid mass panic. Clary also asks her about the rune she saw, and Isabelle eavesdrops on that part of their conversation using a rune because…I don't know, reasons. Oh, Clary also reuses that same rune from he previous episode, so at least she has control of her runes. That's a plus.

"Do you think it's possible my mother sent it? As an angel?"

Wait, angels are dead people now? Well, no, as Cleophas explains.

"So what about my mom? What happens to her?" "That, my dear, has always been as much a mystery to Shadowhunters as it is to mundanes."

Thanks for answering my question, I guess.

So after they go back, Isabelle reports to Aldertree that Clary's clean, but also calls him out about the whole "pushing a drug on her that almost got her killed" thing. But of course, when he suggests he won't give her any more yin fen, she…asks for more anyway. And he still doesn't disagree.

"All I ever wanted was to help you, but now I'm going to need you help."

Didn't she just do that by reporting on Clary to you?

She does withhold the information about Clary seeing runes, though. Because it's almost like torture by way of playing with someone's addiction is not a reliable source of information. Not only are you a giant asshole, Aldertree, you're not even a very effective one.

Oh, and as the episode ends, we see Cleophas leave the Citadel. Magdalena tries to stop her, and Cleophas kills her, revealing she has a Circle rune on her neck and is probably faithful to Valentine. Because…why the hell not, really.

Simon's plot line

Simon has Raphael over, with Raphael berating him for letting his mom see him feed. Because he totally gets to claim the moral high ground when he's doing nothing to help Simon settle into his new life or anything. At least, Raphael wipes Simon's mom's memories of him ever moving in back home and he returns to his shipping container. So…why there? Can't he stay with the other vampires? Does he not want to? You have to give us information, show!

At least that gives Simon an excuse to check on the werewolves, and specifically to ask around for Luke, but his trail has gone cold, and Alaric isn't too worried about looking for him any further. But after a brief cut to Luke hunting deer in wolf form, Simon gets some help in the form of Maia, who hasn't stopped looking for Luke. But she tells Simon he can't look for Luke, because it's dangerous for him as a vampire to look for a werewolf. I'm not sure why she says that like it's dangerous for a vampire specifically, because all she says next is that grief can trigger a loss of control, which…wouldn't that make Luke just as dangerous to anyone?

Maia asks Simon if he knows a remote place where Luke might have gone, and of course, Simon knows of a place they used to go camping. Which he didn't check before because he's Simon and he's functionally useless.

As they drive to the camping grounds, Maia asks who Clary is. Instead of giving some general information, Simon heads straight into who she is to him, which is probably a fairly realistic depiction of a straight man, and Maia immediately picks up that he's in the friend zone.

"She was into this…one guy…Jace, but it's kind of a long story." "Jace Wayland? […] I kinda tried to kill him."

So Simon and Maia bond over how Shadowhunters just don't get it, and the bad/embarrassing stuff they've been through because of their being Downworlders. And to be fair, they have better chemistry than the characters who are on an actual date at the same time as this scene is going on. More on that in a moment.

Cut to them searching the woods, and more bonding (this time over video games, because OMG GIRL GAMER, SO GROUNDBREAKING, IT'S NOT LIKE ABOUT HALF OF GAMERS ARE FEMALE OR ANYTHING), and…cue flashback. Yeah, in this episode that has little to do with Maia and Luke, we get a flashback of the two of them meeting and Luke helping her control her werewolf condition after she accidentally attacked a girl and possibly turned her. I guess the writers just had no idea where else to put it.

They find the deer Luke killed, and soon afterwards, Luke himself, just before he attacks a couple of campers. Simon manages to talk him back into controlling himself. Simon asks Luke to come back, he argues he can't control himself right now, Maia uses the power of flashback to convince him to come back, yay.

They head back to the pack's restaurant together, and Clary comes too. She sees Simon and Maia together and…I don't really know how she's supposed to feel, because Luke comes in before she can really emote. They have their reunion, this is sweet, hurray.

Magnus and Alec's plot lines

Magnus invites Alec over for "an emergency". Which is just a pretense for another pep talk. They seem to be having a lot of those in this season.

"It was the only way to get your attention. […] I'm not okay because you're not okay."

So after Magnus convinces Alec that he needs some time off to remember what he's fighting for or some bullshit like that, they go to a bar for what I guess is that long-overdue first date. Which involves, in that order: Magnus getting Alec a beer that he doesn't like because he basically never drinks, Alec pretending to be bad at pool so he doesn't hurt Magnus's feelings, Magnus probably cheating at pool in response, and Alec letting it slip that his only "relationship" was with Lydia.

That last "reveal" is somehow a surprise that dampens the mood. I don't know why, Magnus was perfectly aware that Shadowhunter society is homophobic last season. What did he expect, exactly?

Oh, but don't worry, they solve it in five seconds where Alec gives a heartfelt talk and Magnus basically goes Christian Grey on us.

"I don't want you to treat me any different." "You're different. And it's a good thing."

Okay, Christian Grey is a little exaggerated, but only a little.

Oh, and then the conversation turns to Magnus's romantic history.

"I've lived for centuries. I've been with men, women, Seelies, warlocks, vampires, a jinn or two."

Because different genders and different species are exactly the same thing! (Yes, I still hate that quote)

And then the conversation turns to Magnus's romantic history, and Alec acting all outraged that Magnus dares to have had many other lovers before him. Magnus's response?

"I am who I am, and you are who you are. And all the magic in the world can't change that, so let's just try to make the best of it."

Or, you know, not? If the person you're dating immediately shames you for your romantic history (which both of them just did), it's probably okay to call it quits.

Cut to them coming home to Magnus's apartment, and Alec suggesting they might be too different to make a relationship work. Alec is about to leave…but then he changes his mind, says he doesn't care about Magnus's exes, and they kiss. Because I guess attraction is more important than anything else to make a relationship happens.

And this is where this subplot ties into…

Jace's plot line

Aldertree summons Jace to tell him once again that he doesn't trust him because of his demon blood. And he's found out that Clary and Jace are studying the Gray Book. Jace says he's just teaching Clary about rune history, and Aldertree, instead of…I don't know, pressing to find the truth or something…assigns Jace to "ichor duty". I don't know what that is exactly, but it sounds like menial work well below the Almighty Jace Waylightmorgendale.

"I can have you clean the latrines, if you prefer."

Do you have actual latrines, though? Because that might raise a lot of questions.

Ichor duty, by the way, consists of cleaning weapons from Shadowhunters after a mission. And everyone in the Institute is apparently really happy to see Jace humiliated this way, and it doesn't take long for him to snap and come back to Aldertree, asking what he's done to deserve this treatment.

The answer, of course, is that he failed the trial by the Soul-Sword. Yeah, he saved Aldertree, but even that doesn't really redeem him since he let Valentine escape in the process. I mean, this should be obvious. So Aldertree basically admits he's trying to force Jace to leave, since he can't kick him out himself.

So Jace does leave, and goes straight to Magnus's place (right after he and Alec kiss, because convenient timing is king). I'm not really sure why this is the place he goes, but hey, Magnus has always been the protagonists' lapdog in the books, so I guess it had to happen here as well.

Is car insurance a waste of money?

I need to get car insurance but I feel like its a waste of money. I am going to pay them monthly and if I happen to get into an accident I will still have to pay them something. I figure that if I can take the money I am going to pay them and put it aside for an emergency it would be a better use of money. Can anyone give me any advice on what I can do? Clean Eating - what does it all mean?

So, nowadays we need labels - for everything apparently!! But why do we need to label our diets too?

Well, as we change our cultural norms for the types of food we eat, and the way we prepare it, some make a conscious decision to opt out. But being an "outsider" puts you automatically in the minority, and we always have a need to call those groups something. In fact it is often the group itself that will present the "label", as this will help them to feel as part of a community, a movement if you will, and will likewise provide the individual with a greater understanding of their own identity. Whether it be vegetarian, vegan, pescetarian, ovo-lacto-pescetarian or any other diet related label you can think of.

What does "Clean Eating" mean then? By most it is agreed that it signifies a diet that nurtures the body by eating food prepared from real, whole foods, without additives, preservatives, colouring or even just highly processed foods, including large amounts of refined sugar.

But why should that be a destinction? Isn´t it just normal food? YES!! That´s exactly it. But how normal are the "food-like-substances" we are presented with on daily basis? Going to the supermarket try to notice how many things are wrapped in colourful packaging with labels that require substantial knowledge to pronounce even. The discussion of fillers, corn starch and preservatives is a fascinating one, that can be addressed some other time. But the point of this blog is to explore why we need to label eating "Clean".

It´s because it´s sadly no longer the cultural norm. Some argue that living in modern society we are too busy to cook for ourselves, or the availability of fresh produce is too small. Longevity in packs is convenient, no doubt about it, but why are we so willing to accept these excuses as facts. In almost all cities, there are beautiful fresh produce markets. So it must be a time thing? And time is money, right? So maybe it´s an economy thing too? But eating clean is usually also eating cheap. Have you ever looked at the price of a bag of potatoes versus a pre-fabricated bag of french fries? The whole food usually wins out! Or what about a bag of onions, versus onion rings, or flour and eggs versus pancake mix?

The point is, that eating clean is about much more than simply eating food like substances to survive. It is about nurturing your body and helping it THRIVE!

And why not? Isn´t it generally acknowledged that your health is your most valuable possession? Why would you deliberately poison the only body you are likely to have while on this planet? Why not feed your body the best food available, by prioritizing your time and energy on making real nutrient rich fuel that will feed not just your body, but your soul, your health and that of your family, your friends and indeed also the planet.

This is where ecology comes in. Many who accept the label as "Clean Eaters", do so without feeling the need to add "Organic" to the label, because it´s obvious to them.

I have a hard time with arguing that eating organic is healthier. No scientific studies have shown that there is significant health benefits from eating organic produce. However, there are some studies appearing, that argue that eating industrially farmed products can be harmful in a myriad of ways.

Meat production with antibiotics and hormone treatments for example? Overwhelming evidence of the implications for humans through these production methods is becoming more and more acknowledged. Whether it be the increasing numbers of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria that flourish in these animals and now also in humans. Or be it the human hormone disturbances witnessed by a growing number of people. But all this needs more research with unequivocal results, to truly make a difference in legislation.

Chemicals in vegetable and fruit production through herbi- and pesticides, have long been discussed, and some substances have been banned. A lot of brilliant and important research is done to develop new chemicals that will enable food production that is more efficient, safer for humans and the environment and make the plants less prone to diseases through pests etc., all of which will provide food for the planets growing population.

Being trained as a doctor, we learned all about the bodies amazing ability to cleanse itself. All the fascinating pathways that the cells of the body can utilize to excrete waste and harmful substances. And that is all true!! But I can´t help but wonder why we insist on testing ourselves constantly? Wouldn't it be better to strive towards providing your body with the best possible conditions for functioning at an optimal level? I, like so many others choose to eat organic for this very reason. Do we have all the facts yet? Are we not still in the very beginning of living as humans surrounded by all these chemical substances ? And that´s not just through our food source either. What will the long term effects be? Perhaps nothing! But perhaps we are already in fact beginning to see the effects in the rise in autoimmune diseases, certain types of cancer, early onset puberty, autism and many many other diseases that are being heavily investigated in these years. It will certainly be interesting to learn more. But what of the disease prevention in eating a healthy clean diet now? Shouldn't we all start that today anyway?

Just because we don´t have solid proof yet, that all these additives to our food production is harmful, doesn´t the idea of eating clean healthy food appeal to most responsible intelligent adults? Why risk it?

As a doctor we always think in terms of toxic dose and safe levels of a given substance when prescribing medicine. But we also learned that ALL things on the planet, are potentially harmful if ingested in large enough quantities. Some of the fastest effects on the human body can be seen with seemingly innocuous things like oxygen and water. This statement merely serves to underline that anything in excess is probably not a good thing. But do we really know what too much is yet regarding many of the substances discussed earlier?

Then there's the whole bit about it being as simple as this: Eat vegetables and lean meats and dairy (for those who wish), in reasonable and balanced quantities, to keep a "normal" weight and maintain your bodies optimal health and prevent most chronic diseases.

Besides, when the father of "modern" medicine, Hippocrates said "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food", I doubt he was forward thinking enough to anticipate that we receive our "prescriptions" through the meat we eat or the prepackaged foodstuff being served in schools, nursing homes, prisons - and yes, even hospitals!!

So, in conclusion. Eating clean is not about eating any particular predefined list of ingredients, rather its about NOT eating products that don´t resemble the plant or animal it originated from. Basically, eating food that has been prepared from seasonal whole foods, and with care and attention, will provide yourself and others with nutrient packed goodness :)

I must stress, that eating more fruits and vegetables in its whole and home cooked form, is healthier than prepackaged fake foodstuff, be it organic vegetables or not.

I hope to have entertained a little, provoked a little and perhaps inspired a little to learn more about Clean Eating.

Justicar Verse au (part 4)

N/A: Ok. Let´s make this. Uhm, Kitty is an omega, and no, she doesn´t need to have a sad background or anything like that. I was debating if this would make her like Pink Diamond or not...but, if Meggan is in the group and no one is making a fuss and if Yana, evil baby, is there...Kitty being an omega shouldn´t be a problem.

2 years before the main plot begins.

Kitty´s dress.

"And soon the Justicars will be officially the police force of tomorrow" someone´s delightfully tone reaches Kitty´s ear in this large party with an increasing number of patrons - some are from delegations of each important European´s countries and Asians as well and Kitty spot the representant of Wakanda- and Kitty is walking distancing herself of those loudly shouting the victory of Justicar. Her blue dress showing her naked back and is different from the hostess´s dress, Betsy Braddock, who is wearing something purple and being a social butterfly.

Why am I here?

This keeps lingering in her mind until someone draws her attention and her doe eyes travel to the strange in a suit with golden eyes-many mutants can have golden eyes, but, only he can have golden eyes and this winning smile-and smiles at Kitty Pryde in a flattering way. "is a lovely night for such beautiful woman to be sighing and looking so doubtful of herself" his tone is smooth and Kitty´s eyes snap open for a second and then relax.

"Oh, your eyes caught me...I wish I could share the enthusiasm everyone feels about the Justicars" she offers nicely. Kurt Wagner- no need to introductions but it was offered anyway- is amused as no one shares any doubt with the Justicars with him.

"If the Justicars are the law...what would regulate them? Good faith?" her tone is a bit dry and she speaks in a sotto tone. "Power doesn´t corrupt. Power reveals absolutely...and Justicars seem to have a biased against beta mutants" she concludes as Kurt nods sagely and grins at this line.

"I agree, power can reveal...but, Miss Pryde, what the Justicars what...is something quite simple. All we want is to protect mutants and humans" and Kurt notices her stares and titled his head. "You don´t trust us..."

Kitty arch one eyebrow. "I want to be wrong and the Justicars to be a nice group to protect everyone...but, after what happened to StrongMan...I have my reservations...and you, Kurt Wagner? Do you truly have blind faith in Justicars?" she offers this question and Kurt didn´t reply as his smile drop for a moment.

"What happened to StrongMan was a ...horrible thing. A horrible accident and one that won´t repeat" Kurt promises and to prove such conviction he asked Kitty to dance. The woman accepts as she whispers in his ear.

"If this happens again...someone ought to do something, don´t you think?" Kitty replied and adds "after all if one born with mutation...should be only the person to decide if they want to be cured or not? I think so" and the music changes for a slow pace and Kurt is waltzing Kitty masterfully as Kitty can feel his mishappen hands on her naked back.

Is soft like a velvet...

Present

The Justicars are noticed the absence of Brian Braddock and no one is reacting to such implications of this new well- Psylocke is using all her powers to locate her brother and so far nothing- and Justicar Cadbury looks at his supervisor waiting for her signal. So far, nothing. "Bull, what should we do?" and Bull rolls her eyes at this.

"Not give importance to our leader being a sis-con. Look, Brian is a grown-up. Maybe he found a nice woman and is spending time with her and lost track of time...it happens with the best of us. It happened with you...and me, so...let´s give time and Brian will show up here talking about this pretty bird he meets" Bull assured Kurt and the others.

Kurt is not so sure.

And when a call from the higher office gives a piece of disastrous news regarding something Bull is not sharing with Kurt- he caught words like ''prisoners", "escaped" and "damn creatures"- makes Kurt Cadbury sure Brian´s disappearance is not due to a pretty lady.

"Cadbury...Can I trust you with a secret?" she asked and Kurt can only nod solemnly. "Do you know about prison X?"

"It was a myth..." and Bull shakes her head. Courtney Ross almost laughs at his reply and Kurt is not taking this reaction as a joke.

"No, Prison X is real...very real, and it was there where we put all the magical creatures...and someone released the creatures" Courtney explains.

"Creatures?"

"Yeah...those who are useless to this new World...we need to figure out who would release the animals as that" Courtney explains and Kurt takes one step back. If she was talking about animals- and he would know as Courtney Ross manages to vibe with snakes - it would be one thing, but, it isn´t necessary to be a genius to know her line is not referring to animals.

"What we do now, Shadowcat?" Meggan inquires firmly - no one dares to mention her hands are quivering a little- and her face resembles more of a monster than a pretty woman. "Can we really win this war?"

And this is a question U Go Girl mostly asks and everyone else- aside from the obvious if nature committed a mistake and maybe the cure is indeed a cure- and Kitty slams her fist on her desk causing every murmours to come to a halt.

"When I formed this group...I never had the notion we could solve this with hopes and smiles, I knew it would lead to a war...and we would stain our hands with blood. I had, you all had...and right now, we must ask ourselves "am I willing to kill one last time? Am I ready to kill to protect the others?" because this will be the last battle and we´ll win or die trying" Kitty states boastfully enacting the others to make their own decisions.

Meggan gazes at Brian for a moment- Meggan has killed before...can she kill Brian? It feels different than the last times...-and back to Kitty. "We´re too deep...I´ll continue" and others follow suit.

Yana, the precious demon child she is, interjected with her saccharine voice never matching the hell in her eyes. "The fight will be bloody. I can use my eyes to see the outcome...but, if the worst comes to be" she looks to no one specific. "I can cast one of my spells and if I do this...everyone should pray to God" Yana gives her devious grin and the others gulp.

What´s worse? Wanda Maximoff casting a spell letting the rage flow in her veins or Yana cast THAT spell?

Kitty´s eyes show no weakness and are long gone the days where she was a mere teacher- it all begins with the formation of Justicars and it will end with their destruction- "Betsy is not the Queen of the world ...yet, she needs to be on that tower to amplify her powers..." and Meggan pipes in the conversation. "She´s not a real omega. According to ..." she can´t say his name and doesn´t want to linger on what the past meant for Brian and herself. "Captain Britain tells the truth...she´s not a real omega and neither is he" she revels.

"Then...he´s useless to us..." someone says. "We should kill him" and Meggan protest violently against this idea and Kitty agrees with Meggan´s actions. Brian can be valuable later...

"We need to destroy the tower...and sure, the security will be tight around, but, we can do it" and she smiles as she shows her plan. "In the end, we need them!"

Prison is never designed to be a fun place, that´s a given, moreover, a prison named "Prison X" certainly is self-explanatory and Kurt Cadbury can see the divergence between the pamphlet in his hand and reality. "I thought...those are facility to rehabilitation" he mutters softly and Bull cracks some jokes about his naivety. "Don´t be silly, Kurt...plus, we´ve got a big problem to solve..." Courtney Ross looks at the empty cellars. "Where are the creatures?"

And all Kurt can think is the words Kitty Pryde throws at him 2 years ago.

What would regulate the Justicars?

Misfit au (the start)

N/A: I´d say redemption for characters is good if is earned, not every evil character should or can be the good guy, but, if DC can make Harley the good guy...why not the others?

The weather is humid and is giving the impression of noir, as someone is running from prison, which, ironic, is the perfect feeling for this night to a certain group. The government of the US is sending their top agents to retrieve the fugitive, dead or alive, sadly for them, the fugitives are still missing.

"Miss Weller" the captain is talking with his boss "the Suicide Squad is still unknown" the captain speak uneasily as the general and the other men are searching in the dark for something that may be already out of the state, only God can know what those freaks can do.

"Captain Smith, retrieve your men right now, at this point, find them will be impossible, let´s clean our steps" is a silent order with many implications and the Captain understand what his real command is as the man shoot the scientists and their assists.

"The operation is cancelled" the Captain explained as many scientists are shoot "there´s no register of Suicide Squad"

Meanwhile, the fugitives are in the sewer, much to their dismay, the old cliche of comic books ended up saving their lives. Columbina, Blink, Ice Woman, Polaris, War Path and Croc Man are walking in the sewer and watching rats and crocodiles(an Urban Legend, but, this is New Gotham) alike without caring.

"So" Columbina speaks breaking the silence "we went to magical electroshock that should have killed us, but, manage to take the chip in our minds, without giving any sequela, and we´re here...in the sewer, full of dirty water" Columbina speaks as she has a hard time to believe in anything that just happened, well, in a sense, Columbina needs to believe in order to keep her sanity.

Polaris, being the one with any source of light, as the sewer was never designed to have light, even in New Gotham " No, what impressed me is the someone design this" she points the sewer " to be bigger enough to any person or meta-human to walk freely, but, they refuse to put lights"

"Sometimes, we got to wonder," Columbine said "how self-aware is New Gotham truly is"

Tori only sighs and complains about taxes. "Seriously, I do my taxes for that?!"

Blink intervene "we´re under the Suicide Squad, no one pays taxes, ironically, this has to be the only advantage the government ever give to us"

Warpath watches the two women complain about taxes and government, as Kitty is finding amazing how they went through electroshock and their hair doesn´t even look messy. And Dr Croc really wants a beer.

"What" the Apache man speaks gaining the attention of the others " we will do now? Return for our old lives? Do we have this option?"

Kitty said nothing, neither did Polaris, as the green haired woman only speaks one line "I´m looking at a door, in the fucking sewer, and I can only say, only in New Gotham"

The silence rules of the group and the future is uncertain, Warpath is musing about the experience and the uncertainty of everything makes too real, freedom was a vague dream, and now, she´s offering many, many possibilities.

Freedom is at their hands and they still smell like they just get out of a sewer, well, they really did. And now, Polaris and the others are planning on what to do, New Gotham is dark now, and the sounds of sirens can be heard, is for them or for someone else?

People wearing hoods show up, speaking in a dialect that is akin to Chinese, Kitty deduces as she used to study languages before...Suicide Squad and the hood figures show weapons and are ready to fight.

Collective all they speak one thing. "Only in New Gotham" and quickly they all begin to fight with the hood figures, who, of course, know all the martial arts and magic one can think of, in the end, Suicide Squad wins over the hood figures as Columbina used her hammer to finishes the last enemy.

No blood or guts was meet, instead, only sand is left on the floor. "So, sand people are real?" Columbina asked and before she could receive an answer they are transported to a mansion.

Tori only sighs as she points out they are still in New Gotham, of course, in the Magical part. "When you´re rich why stay in the non-magical part of New Gotham? I hate rich people" Tori aka Ice Woman complains and War Path wonders what´s real anymore.

"Ah, finally, the Suicide Squad arrives" a new voice jolts them and they take a step back as Ra Al Ghoul is drinking wine and looking at them as a good host, everyone knows who Ra Al Ghoul is. Never make an enemy of this man. "Oh, please, don´t be afraid, if I´d want you dead you would be dead already"

"Thanks, that really breaks the ice," Kitty said and Tori resents that line. "But, why are we here?"

"I´ll explain, but, first, Lorna Dane Lesher, I owe you the biggest apology I can give " this surprise everyone, including Lorna herself, as no one expected this. Deep down, they are all thinking if Columbina is right and maybe the dirty water and the electroshock are a bad combination.

"Judge by all your confusing faces, I better explain myself, Lorna, your father, Erik Lesher was a good friend of mine, Magneto, the master of Magnetism, and when you went to live with your family by your mother´s side, Magneto asked me to keep an eye on you, you see," Ra paused for a moment and continues "he had many enemies and he wanted you, his only daughter, to be saved and have a normal life, I did the best I could, but, I was a fool to not think the government wouldn´t use someone with your abilities and for that I apologise" Ra finishes his speech and Lorna has no idea what to say. Lorna looks at Kitty and asked her, with her green eyes pleading and only that, to do something.

"Look," Kitty said "we went through hell, maybe you had seen many versions of hell" Ra agree he did, Kitty is not surprised "but, offer sand people to kill and apologies will do shit to our situation, we had no life, and nothing to grab on reality...I can´t speak by the others, but, I want revenge or justice, whatever appropriate word is need here, against the monsters who used me as a weapon, I want to kill them, and I´d not think you want to help us"

"But, Miss Pryde...I´d want to help" Ra speaks offering a smile "You all want to murder, and I can sympathise with revenge, but, I can give more than a shiny weapon, well, no one here needs a weapon, I can give you a cover"

Lorna now speaks, still shocked(in more ways than another) about the revelation and is gazing at Ra Al Ghoul "how can you help us?"

"And what this will cost us?" Kitty adds as no one would give big favour for free, especially someone like Ra Al Ghoul.

"I can give you the perfect cover, now, for the price...I just want everyone´s discretion" he offers in a velvet tone and the others take a minute to consider the option.

"Well, when the devil makes an offer and we have no other option and we just defeat sand people, why not?" Kitty said shrugging comically. Lorna has still no concrete idea of what to think right now, her father passed away and still surprises her even in the grave.

3 years later, one of the popular shows is "You´re wrong" is the most popular Talk show in the history of TV, only losing to "sketch TV" a show that introduces the news how people like and the fans and haters often point out many of the greatest or worst moments of the program, often using each moment to prove journalism is dead or is doing alright.

Few realize that Sketch TV is not a channel of journalism, is a comedy show, lead by Kitty Pryde, Tori Drake and Lorna Dane, Clarice Fong, James Jonathan Proudstar and Eric “Croc” James

"Ryder, careful" Vera speaks drinking her cup of coffee "you can be overshadowed by this Sketch TV"

"Vera, they are a comedy show," Ryder said a bit amused, but, as he´s looking at some of the old sketches, Kitty giving details about how a person can steal a diamond, something clicked in his mind "but life is a comedy" and he is off to investigate and prepare his next news.

ThunderCats Roar - “Mandora - The Evil Chaser”

MAN-DOOO-RAAAAAA!

The episode begins with Snarf and Lion-O catching butterflies in jars. Being the Lord of the ThunderCats, he knows very well that the act of catching butterflies requires the best of stealth, as he perfectly shows off.

Lion-O: Be careful, Snarf! Butterflies scare easy, so we have to be super-duper-duper quiet. (yelling) Ooh, butterflies, HOOOO!

See, the joke is that he's doing the exact opposite of what he said he was going to do. This is going to be a constant through the first half of the episode.

This act of butterfly catching gets interrupted when a huge pod lands on Earth, with voices calling out to pull the lever. Obviously, that must mean they were just scared little voices that just needed his help.

Lion-O: Scary voices, definitely scary voices...

Or, he can acknowledge that the voices are scary. He decides not to open the cage and let out all of the scary voices, and the rest of the episode is about him catching butterflies. No, of course not, the plot wouldn't advance if Lion-O didn't let all of those scary voices out by pulling a lever because those scary voices really wanted him to do that. As one of the space criminals tells him "thanks, hot stuff", he just waves his hand and says "you're welcoooome!" in a sing-song voice despite being literally steamrolled over by one of them.

But hey, maybe it was a mistake, and those people with the scary voices were just nice people that were mistakenly put in a jail cell. One person certainly doesn't agree, as that person makes a dramatic entrance on a flying motorcycle.

As the cool motorcycle person on the cool motorcycle makes a cool motorcycle landing, Lion-O widens his eyes so hard that it becomes 80% of his face. I didn't really want to screenshot that, so here's a screenshot of our titular character-of-the-week: Mandora, the evil chaser, a character from the original cartoon. In fact, this plot is actually a parody of her first episode, also named "Mandora The Evil Chaser", which also features the original Lion-O ignoring obvious danger signs and let loose a bunch of criminals from a prison pod. Being Roar, this is exaggerated for comedic effect, and they decide not to reference "curiosity killed the cat" here.

This exaggeration also applies to Mandora, who was a no-nonsense cop in the original. Roar turns her into a super serious cop with a scowl not too dissimilar to Judge Dredd. As Lion-O criticizes her way of showing her badge with her picture upside down, Mandora makes the correct assumption that this bumbling lion is behind the prison break and arrests him. Snarf brings out his weapons, including a chainsaw, and we can only wonder what would have happened if there wasn't a prime directive against fighting interplanetary cops.

Lion-O tries to defend himself from these accusations by saying he's an evil chaser too, bringing up that fights these guys called the Mutants that are 100% evil. As another space criminal runs out of the jail cell, Lion-O, still handcuffed, hops right on top of him. The criminal does explain that his only crime was tax evasion, and Lion-O considers letting him go because his crime was so minor, but Mandora tells him that getting in the way of streets getting funded.

Despite his unwillingness to capture that crook, his help with capturing that tax evader does convince Mandora that he's on the side of righteousness, though she does consider him an oaf.

Zooming into his very tiny brain reveals that he thinks "oaf" is an acronym for "officially awesome friend", and is overjoyed by the compliment. Mandora then gives him a badge, declaring him a "deputy oaf". She had that badge ready this whole time; it's possible this is a common occurrence for her. Considering the general silliness of everyone not named Tygra in this reboot, that's not too hard to believe.

In order to Mandora to not change her mind on how heroic he is, Lion-O has to prove his status as the deputy oaf by capturing all of those criminals he let free. I would say accidentally, but he called them "scary voices" and let them free anyway.

As Mandora and the oaf zoom past by on her bike, we see Molly Lava, the space criminal that called Lion-O "hot stuff", hiding behind a bush. Other than her possible attraction to Lion-O, which only seems to come up twice in this episode, she just looks like a tiny little rock monster that doesn't seem like much of a threat. This means that most of the episode is going to be about capturing this particular criminal. In fact, all of the other criminals are caught rather easily. How?

With a montage, of course, complete with a song that exposes the might that is Mandora. The action scenes do prove that, with Mandora swatting giant flies with giant flyswatters, zapping lake polluters clean, and fighting people with laser whips. It's pretty cool, and a good contrast to how little Lion-O helps out in this montage.

Sure, Lion-O does help out slightly in a few of the scenes, but for the most part, it's just him looking at Mandora in awe of her abilities and dancing various dances. Yes, this does include doing the Booty Scooty at the camera, but I feel like it's less offensive when he did it than when a certain other group of superheroes did it. For starters, I think Lion-O is supposed to be an adult here. Well, maybe. They could de-retcon that in the future.

After the montage, Mandora does at least show appreciation for Lion-O for making her job marginally easier, and that is actually an accomplishment. Definitely a back-handed compliment, though not an undeserved one, but Lion-O takes it with pride anyway.

Something has to ruin this somehow, and it's not just because he missed that one villain. One of the criminals informs Lion-O that he shouldn't take pride in being called an oaf, and asks him if it even knows what it means. After getting what looks like a Speak N Spell from Snarf, he finds out he's been called an uneducated, clumsy person. It's not wrong, but don't tell Lion-O that.

Mandora finds out she hasn't caught Molly Lava yet, and Lion-O suggests that it would be easy to catch that cute little thing. As anyone could predict, that little cute thing is the worst criminal of them all. It would be even more cliche if she decided to call her "the destroyer of worlds"...which is exactly what she does.

Because of his newfound knowledge of what an oaf is, Lion-O offers that if he captures the cute little thing, maybe Mandora can consider him something that isn't an oaf. As Mandora tries to explain that a deputy oaf couldn't possibly defeat the destroyer of worlds, Lion-O decides to commit grand theft cool motorcycle. But hey, maybe he might be able to capture that small little rock before she leaps into a volcano and become a monster worthy of being called a destroyer of worlds. That could totally make up for that!

Unfortunately for that handsome guy, Molly Lava ends up diving into that volcano. Worst of all, Mandora shows up and realizes what the oaf has indirectly done by not letting her use her own bike.

Lion-O tries to defeat Molly Lava at her full power in, I'm not going to lie, a really impressively animated and creative fight scene. Not only is he trying to show his heroism, he also wants to look good in front of his new idol. I also like the call back to the fight in Exodus, as he repeatedly makes his sword bigger as he realizes he needs more power to defeat her with his strategy of cutting those lava arms off of the lava monster. Sadly, he doesn't seem to realize cutting off Molly Lava's arms isn't doing anything.

Exclaiming himself as Lord of the ThunderCats and King of All Thunderians, Lion-O leaps right at the giant monster's mouth, getting ready to swing his sword right into the monster. Well, something went right into the monster. Or, rather, someone.

It's here where Mandora seemingly has a change of heart on that oaf. Mandora may have only seen him as an oaf, and he pretty much was an oaf, but in her heart, she knew he wasn't lying about being a king. A king that would sacrifice himself for his people, and, while he was a dummy, he was a very brave and apparently regal dummy. A lot of emphasis is put on the king part, as if to soften what is a complete 180 on her character.

She exclaims that she would shed a tear for this sacrifice, but she knows she can't cry when she's on duty. She then takes out her time card and swipes it so that she can go on a break. Or, in this case, a "cry time." Was this really a good time for a joke? Well, anyone could assume Lion-O would still be alive since the show would have to end prematurely, so it's not like we need to take this super seriously. Still, I'd say it works.

To avenge the fallen king, Mandora gets ready to fight, her music playing as if she's about to do something really cool. This all changes when Molly Lava starts getting a big bump on her head, as if someone was coming out from the inside.

Unfortunately for the people who judged this show as horrendous because of that teaser and that Teen Titans Go crossover that the ThunderCats Roar team had nothing to do with, it turns out Lion-O is okay, spinning his sword like a propeller right out of Molly Lava's gigantic lava body, with Molly Lava herself in tow.

In the end, thanks to his bravery, the deputy oaf gets promoted to officer oaf by Mandora. As she slowly walks towards Lion-O and stretches her arms out around Lion-O, he also gets something else, too...

...for grand theft flying motorcycle, hey, I wasn't too far off, he gets a mugshot. Lion-O is still smiling at this, though, because nothing phases him now, not even when Mandora spells his name wrong. One can't forget that all important hyphen.

How does it stack up?

At first, I thought this was going to be yet another Boggy Ben, where the animation is awesome, the music is awesome, but everything else is just "lol Lion-O is stupid" humor. This one also has some great animation and a pretty cool song, and I think the plot works pretty well.

This is as good as Prank Call, and I gave that a 5, so...

Next, Lion-O has to save the ocean.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown — Chapters 33-39

Last time, for those who may have issue remembering after this massive break I accidentally took, Lucien called Tana a slut and then offered to turn her and help her be a proper vampire, in exchange for her helping him control Gavriel while the super dangerous vampire lord called the Spider comes to town.

And now, for the book's finale. Which…I'm having a hard time believing we're already there. I think the issue is that all those flashback chapters mean that the actual plot has taken only a portion of the total page and/or word count, and thus, we have to wrap it up now for convention's sake, even though…pacing-wise, we're not really there yet. There's only a fifth of the book left; it's kind of jarring to think about.

But I guess all we can do is go ahead and find out for ourselves, right?

Plot recap

Lucien says he and Gavriel have to talk, and he makes sure to keep Tana around, since she has to keep Gavriel in line. He recaps the situation, with the Spider being on the way, and explains his plan to Gavriel. Or…rather, they immediately start talking about the plan's details as though they'd already planned it all. It's jarring, but intentionally so, since Tana has to stop them and make them backtrack a little for her sake and ours.

“What is the plan, exactly?” Tana asked. […] “It’s simple, really,” he said, waving a hand in Gavriel’s direction. “The Spider is going to come pick up his prize. We’re going to truss up Gavriel, and when the Spider gets close enough—and he will, he won’t be able to resist gloating—Gavriel will pull free from the restraints and kill him.”

Yeah. That's the plan. Sabotaged restraints and assassination.

Tana has no idea how to react, and…yeah, it's kind of hard to feel anything about it, honestly. This book started out with deeply personal stakes, and while it's normal to escalate stakes, it's too much too late. Besides, as Tana puts it:

Some vampires were going to murder some other vampires.

Hard to really feel anything when the vampires have been fairly unambiguously the bad guys.

With everything settled, Lucien's about to dismiss them, but Gavriel basically adds a layer of blackmail on top of this whole plan. To make sure Lucien doesn't backstab him, he threatens to reveal why Lucien really gave over Gavriel to the Spider the first time around. Which he's more than happy to tell Tana: Lucien is the one who turned Caspar Morales. You know, the guy who started the vampire outbreak that made the world what it is. Worse, Lucien did it to spite Gavriel for his own amusement.

“I killed five black-haired and dark-eyed vampires in the month before, all of them with something in their features that made them look, from a distance, as though they could have been kin to me. Three women and two men.”

Yeah, Lucien was playing mind games by forcing Gavriel to kill people who looked like his family. That's why Gavriel let Caspar go—he couldn't take it anymore—hence vampire outbreak. Lucien denies it, of course, but pretty weakly. As for Gavriel, he says he kept this to himself for so long because he liked "the thought of [Lucien] free". Whatever that means.

Lucien leaves, and Gavriel angsts to Tana about how much she must hate him—which she doesn't, because…of course she doesn't. They talk about Lucien's plan, and Tana tries to make sure Gavriel isn't being manipulated.

If Lucien heard [her], he’d know she never had any intention of helping him.

So…why are you doing it, then? Tana's reasons for getting involved in this at all are pretty shaky.

I will skip the ensuing banter, where Gavriel cites Russian folklore to explain to her how he's a monster and she's better than him, and Tana retorts by using her own personal experience to argue that Gavriel isn't a monster, he only sees himself as one because that's how other people see him. Honestly, in terms of the arguments presented, Gavriel does it much better, even if I have to agree with what Tana says.

It doesn't go anywhere beyond angst. And, well, an almost-kiss moment, but they get cockblocked by Tana's Cold and bloodlust kicking up. Gavriel offers to feed her his blood, she hesitates on the grounds that she's already started turning and doesn't want to further the process any more than necessary. Gavriel tells her he's not even sure she can reverse the transformation at all after going this far, because no one has ever changed their mind at this point.

“So it’s also possible that I could be Cold forever?” she asked, her heart pounding. “Hungry, forever and ever?”

Maybe. And apparently that's enough to convince her to drink Gavriel's blood, though. Cue Persephone imagery. No, really.

She felt like Persephone in Hades, pomegranate seeds bursting against her teeth, juice rolling on her tongue, and the more she had, the more she hungered.

She also offers him to bite her as well, since she's already Cold. He does, she gets to experience the high that comes with a vampire bite, and it's all very shippy in ways that I feel like I've read before in other books, but hey, I guess there's only so many ways to make mutual biting and blood drinking sound sexy.

In the afterglow (for lack of a better word), Tana considers staying here, but, well, she's got plans to free Valentina and she's sticking to it, so she does eventually leave.

After a flashback chapter about how Tana was scared as a child when her mother left to parties, which…doesn't really go anywhere, we're back on track. Tana goes to her room first to get her phone back, but Marisol's already waiting for her there. Turns out, however, that she's here on Jameson's behalf, and that she's his mom, not his girlfriend.

She also has news that I was right: Pearl is in Coldtown. Which is an issue for reasons that I hope are obvious, but…one problem at a time, I guess.

They make it to the cells without any problem, Marisol convincing the guards that they have to clean up the human prisoners for when the Spider arrive to serve them as food. The guards do let slip that Lucien is keeping a skeleton crew for when the Spider arrives, which Tana picks up on.

Lucien had promised Gavriel that his people would be there to take down the Spider’s Corps des Ténèbres.

Yep, Lucien's probably double crossing Gavriel, blackmail be damned. I don't know why anyone would be shocked by this reveal, honestly.

Anyway, back to the prisoners. Not all of them even agree to leave, probably because, you know, some of them are here of their own free will. Tana doesn't have the time to argue, so they just leave, and the ethical bullet is more or less sidestepped. They escape with the prisoners who do want to leave (including Valentina), and Tana makes a choice once she's outside to go back inside Lucien's house, taking a crossbow with her. She gives Valentina her necklace (with the token inside), which can only mean one thing:

I’m going to kill Lucien Moreau myself, Tana repeated and this time she allowed herself to finish the thought. I’m going to kill Lucien Moreau myself or die trying.

Yup. Tana's embracing her own mortality in order to save both Pearl and Gavriel from Lucien's manipulations.

Speaking of Pearl, we get a quick flashback of her arrival to Coldtown, which includes an implication that Lucien was involved in convincing her to come here at all.

Then, finally, one of the board moderators private-messaged her. His name was Nicholas, and he said her sister was doing okay, but if she came to Coldtown, Lucien was interested in meeting her. Don’t tell anyone, he wrote her. Think of how surprised your sister will be. Don't believe strangers on the Internet, kids. It's not good for you.

More importantly, though…I'm not really sure why this is necessary. Lucien's already our villain and we already want him to fall, you've provided us with enough stakes for that (which includes being a threat to Pearl). Was it necessary to make him responsible for this?

Well, it doesn't matter, because the flashback ends with Aidan finding her, along with some other guy she doesn't know. Ooh, spooky.

Back to Tana on the hunt. Which mostly means she starts philosophising.

We all wind up drawn to what we’re afraid of, drawn to try to find a way to make ourselves safe from a thing by crawling inside of it, by loving it, by becoming it.

…I don't even know what that means.

She finds Gavriel already tied up, with Lucien asking him about the escaped prisoners. Because…yeah, he thinks Gavriel did it and/or had Tana do it. He genuinely does not believe that she could have a will of her own. No, really.

The Spider's guards arrive to announce his arrival, and Tana takes a shot at Lucien, fearing it's her last chance. She hits him…but misses the heart, and gets caught by the Spider's guards. But it's no big deal, because Lucien thinks this is also something Gavriel put her up to. He is that sexist. Well, admittedly, Gavriel plays into it too.

“If you’re proposing a duel, I believe she gets to pick the weapon. I hope she picks me.”

This is when Tana decides to go on a tangent about the chains, and…you know it's important because it's so random. Specifically, Gavriel broke free of Elisabet's chains when he was weak at the start of the book, even though they were designed to hold him. And these chains, which may or may not be rigged to let him out easily and kill the Spider, shouldn't hold him either, since he's in a much better condition now.

She doesn't share her conclusions yet, but it's becoming evident that Tana figured out Gavriel has an agenda, and that he's still goading Lucien to get draw his attention.

Could the Spider have decided to free Gavriel and let him work off his debt by killing Lucien? […] Her head spun. There was something she was missing.

Well that's getting a little too far ahead of yourself, don't you think?

Gavriel gets Lucien to stab him, and pulls out the knife, basically unharmed. That's when Tana realizes that Gavriel is much stronger than he has any right to be, which can only mean one thing.

“The Spider is here […] He’s already here, isn’t he? He’s been here the whole time.”

…Sorry, couldn't resist. Proceed.

“How did you—?” Lucien asked. “What is she talking about with this ‘Spider is here’ business?” “The Spider’s dead,” Gavriel said, his mouth curving into a wide, terrifying grin. “He’s been dead. Dead for weeks. Dead when I left Paris. That’s how I escaped. I killed him.”

Yup. And apparently that makes him the new Spider, because that's how vampires work, I guess. I mean, sure, the strength thing has been established, but the fact that the Spider's Corps des Ténèbres are now his…? I don't get it. But they are, since they turn on Lucien immediately.

Gavriel figures he might as well get his own turn of the gloating, telling Lucien his side of the story since his "escape" from the Spider, how he let Elisabet capture him, but then he went along with Tana's rescue for shits and giggles.

“You’re mad,” Lucien said. “You really are insane.” “I really am,” Gavriel said.

Can we…not? No? Fine, moving on.

Gavriel hesitates to kill Lucien when it comes down to it, and Lucien takes the opportunity to take Tana hostage. Of course, this is irrelevant, because Tana herself is gorged on vampire blood and has some super strength of her own. She catches Lucien off-guard, gets him at her mercy, and forces him to say on the record that he turned Caspar Morales.

And then she kills Lucien anyway, for good measure. Hurray for pragmatic protagonists!

After a…fairly weird interlude that shows us the last blog post of Bill Story, that celebrity who died halfway into the book, it's time to wrap things up. Gavriel and the Corps have taken control of the place, meaning Tana's free to move as she pleases, but of course, she still has to find Pearl. Luckily, Aidan already found her, and even texted her about it! How nice of him.

So she heads to the Eternal Ball. You know, that important set piece that we haven't even gotten to see yet? Yes, clearly the final chapter is the right place to introduce it and waste a couple of pages on describing it. Good job.

Tana stumbles upon Valentina, who's here with Aidan and Pearl. Turns out Aidan teamed up with Jameson to find her as soon as they heard Pearl was in town.

“Aidan was the only one of us who knew what she looked like in person,” Valentina put in. “And the only one who wasn’t a stranger.”

And so…he's redeemed? Yeah, not really, but at least he's trying.

Anyway, everyone saw Tana beat up Lucien and kill him on a live feed. Including Pearl, who realizes that Lucien's a bad guy and that she made a mistake coming here. But she asks that they don't leave until morning so she can have one night in Coldtown.

And…yeah, I'm not even sure that they'll be able to leave at all.

“Fine,” Tana said. “But you go back to the gate just before dawn. Promise? We’ll walk you there.”

…Or Tana apparently expects Pearl to leave without her. Huh.

They party, and Tana's now a celebrity, because Lucien wasn't quite as popular to the people who lived under his rule as he was to the rest of the world. As Jameson puts it:

“One of only two survivors of what they’re calling the Sundown Tragedy […] The girl who drove an infected friend and a vampire all the way to Coldtown and turned them in. The girl who killed a vampire on camera. Oh, yeah, video of you has been all over the news and the blogs—the footage of you wrestling around in the dirt next to the garbage cans with that girl, Midnight, is particularly popular. And now—you killed Lucien Moreau. You should charge for interviews.”

And this is…not really anything, honestly. Tana didn't have any relationship with fame, so this doesn't really bring anything to her character arc. And since it's the end of the book, I doubt anything will come out of it, either. It makes sense that it's there, but it's just…why bother?

Tana and Jameson organize to lock up Tana so she can wait out the Cold (with Jameson giving her a final chance to back out of it). And then, we move on to shipping as Tana sets Jameson up with Valentina. Yeah, it was hinted that they like each other, and with Marisol revealed to be his mom and not his girlfriend, I guess we have to tie up that loose end. Even though I can't say I really cared about their pseudo-romance. But…yay, trans girl is treated like a normal female character in a YA novel? That's good? Maybe?

We kind of fade to black as the five of them (Tana, Aidan, Jameson, Valentina and Pearl) dance into the night, which…kind of feels forced and cliché, especially since half of these people don't really know each other. I mean, it's a small miracle that they even knew who Aidan was to enlist his help finding Pearl, right?

Cut to morning, when Pearl leaves the city. We're assured us that Tana's friend Pauline is waiting outside to drive her back home, and so she'll be all right and we can have out goodbyes. Which includes fake-out romantic drama, since Pearl says Gavriel came to see Tana at the Eternal Ball, but changed his mind, and Tana takes that as a sign that he doesn't really like her or whatever. I am so convinced, you have no idea.

Skip to the next day, with Tana locked up in an abandoned place courtesy of Jameson. She sets up Midnight's camera to record and broadcast her experience, and in the middle of her vlogging, Gavriel shows up. Shocking, I know.

He offers to stay with her through the whole process, as a way to thank her and earn her forgiveness for what he dragged her into. And then…

“I love you, you see—and I fear I have no way to say or show it that isn’t terrible, except coming here.” […] “I’d rather you didn’t kill everyone in the world, yes, that’s true. And I have feelings for you, too. Big, weird, crazy feelings. […] So I’m scared, because you’re not just not human, you’re not like anyone—there’s nobody like you in all the world and it’s you I want. I want you and I hate wanting things and I especially hate admitting I want them.”

Um…okay? I mean, there was ship tease between them (obviously), but it was never really built up. So this feels a little sudden. Although I guess they are only talking about being attracted—well, Tana is, anyway. But…I don't know, it feels like the author just went "oh, shit, forgot about that plot thread".

Tana tries to get him to leave, because she's sure he'll let her out like she let her mother out, he promises that he won't, and…that's apparently enough. Although I guess it's not like there's much Tana could do but take his word, since she is restrained.

“Allow me to explain how my whole life has prepared me for this moment. I am used to girls screaming, and your screams—your screams will be sweeter than another’s cries of love.”

This is probably not that romantic. But it convinces her, I guess. And they also decide that if she can't go back to being human…

“Then we’ll go hunt vampires together and you’ll drink their blood.” “The Lady or the Tiger”

…Sure, whatever. Let's end on that, I guess.

Commentary

This ending feels like the weakest part of the book, honestly. For one, while a few things were still really well handled in terms of execution (the way the book slowly builds up to Tana realizing that Gavriel is the new Spider, for instance, which could have been more spread out throughout the book, but was still pretty good), some other things…start falling apart.

For instance, the fridge horror that the book's kept up the whole way is starting to feel a bit…tired.

She could plan and she could make herself keep going, but she couldn’t control when her brain overloaded on horror and threatened to shut down spectacularly, in a sputter of hysterical laughter.

Tana hasn't really had any difficulties dealing with this so far, and it's starting to feel like the book is trying to take it too far and that it isn't committing to its own ideas.

Similarly, the book tries to throw more drama when Gavriel blackmails Lucien by having Tana realize that they are recorded (albeit not broadcast live) by Lucien's security system. That…goes nowhere at all. So why bother? Same with the romances, sort of, they feel tacked on like an afterthought. Which I'm not exactly mad about, but since execution is the book's main strength, anything that feels lackluster brings the whole thing down with it a little bit.

…Or there's the way Tana is in denial when she first hears Pearl is in town.

For a single hopeful moment, she recalled a day in third grade, when her whole class had sat in the grass just beyond the jungle gym and Ms. Lee had whispered “It’ll be time for lunch later” to Rachel, who’d whispered to Lance, who’d whispered to Courtney, who’d whispered to Pauline, who’d whispered to Marcus, who’d whispered to Tana. “It’s time lambs ate hair,” Marcus had said, his breath smelling of spearmint gum, and Tana had been proud, because she was sure she passed it on perfectly. By the time it got to the other end, though, it was even more garbled. Maybe that was what happened. The message got confused. Marisol had misunderstood. Pearl wasn’t really here. But in her heart, Tana knew she was.

Like…can you be any more convoluted?

Another thing that got tedious near the end were the flashbacks/asides. One, for instance, is about how Tana was scared as a child when her mother went to parties. I think it's supposed to relate to how she swore as a kid to always be ready to fight monsters, and now she fights a monster (i.e. Lucien), but…imagine the few paragraphs I just quoted, blown up to the size of a (short) chapter, all to impart fairly nebulous information.

Then there's the second-to-last chapter of the book.

*This will be the last blog post on Bill Story’s journal. He was drained by two newborn vampires only hours after this went up. […] There’s something easy about the idea that vampirism is some kind of disease—then they can’t help it that they attack us, that they commit murders and atrocities, that they can only control themselves sometimes. They’re sick; it’s not their fault. And there’s something even easier about the idea of demonic invasion, something forcing our loved ones to do all manner of terrible things. Still not their fault, only now we can destroy them. But the third option, the possibility that there’s something monstrous inside of us that can be unleashed, is the most disturbing of all.

Which is just…too little too late when it comes to discussing the nature of vampirism and monsters. The book's spent its entire time having vampires as pretty unambiguous villains, and yeah, Gavriel and Tana discussed how being a vampire made them more true to themselves than before, but it wasn't really phrased in a universal way.

Plus, I'm not a fan of "humans are all naturally monsters inside and we're just too repressed to act monstrous" messages. So I have a tiny bias against it.

Overall, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown remains miles above anything I've read on this blog, except perhaps Witch Eyes. It does have a pretty strong execution most of the time, backed up by some pretty solid concepts (especially Tana as a character) and some shakier ones (the romances come to mind), but it's still a pretty enjoyable book.
