Why is Hera so hostile to Leto in a manner that she isn't with the other lovers of Zeus? I can't think of any other woman who was targeted so much by Hera. One could say she didn't want Leto to give birth because her children would be a competition to Hera's children, but why bother her even after she had already given birth? Is it because Leto herself is also a threat to Hera?

I don't think Leto would ever be a threat to Hera's role as the queen of the gods but Hera might see her as a competitor for Zeus' affection, even though I think Zeus would not marry someone else and replace Hera.

The twins are definitely a big reason why Hera begrudged Leto - it is outright stated in the Callimachus Hymn to Delos that the reason Hera especially targeted Leto was because she was told that Apollo would be dearer to Zeus than Ares is. Zeus is very proud of Artemis as well. As he himself puts it, he doesn't mind facing Hera's wrath for children like her.

But the continued hatred even after the birth of the twins (like sending Tityus to rape Leto) could have been for different reasons. This wasn't like one of those affairs Zeus would have with mortal women where he'd leave them behind once the child is conceived. Neither could Hera, despite her many attempts, get rid of Leto like she did with the other lovers. Not only did Leto give Zeus children that he loves dearly, she also stayed on Olympus despite Hera's hatred towards her (which isn't directed to any of Zeus' other divine mistresses, btw). It might have also been because Leto herself is dear to Zeus, if the way she's treated on Olympus is any proof. In the Homeric hymn to Apollo, Leto stands next to Zeus - in the Olympian assembly - to welcome their son. Hera is completely absent from the scene, as if Leto had taken her place even if temporarily. Now you could say this is because Apollo himself is such a powerful and glorious son in a way that no other son of Zeus is, so of course Leto would get such an honor (the hymn itself presents it this way).

But here's another instance - in the Iliad, when Hera goes to seduce Zeus, he is obviously very smitten but before getting into the action, he lists some of his lovers (I believe these were his favorite lovers, as a lot of others are not mentioned):

"for never has such desire for goddess or mortal woman so gripped and overwhelmed my heart, not even when I was seized by love for Ixion’s wife, who gave birth to Peirithous the gods’ rival in wisdom; or for Acrisius’ daughter, slim-ankled Danaë, who bore Perseus, greatest of warriors; or for the far-famed daughter of Phoenix, who gave me Minos and godlike Rhadamanthus; or for Semele mother of Dionysus, who brings men joy; or for Alcmene at Thebes, whose son was lion-hearted Heracles; or for Demeter of the lovely tresses; or for glorious Leto; or even for you yourself, as this love and sweet desire for you grips me now.’ (Book 14, trans. A. T. Murray)

Notice how when talking about most of them, he also mentions the children they bore to him but when Demeter and Leto are mentioned, he doesn't bring up their children at all despite them being some of the most accomplished kids of his. What's more, he takes Leto's name just before Hera's. I mean, this is an interpretation but it looks like not only did Zeus love Leto the most out of all his mistresses - giving her a place second to that of his wife, but also his love for her wasn't necessarily only because she gave him two amazing children.

Nonnus does something similar in the Dionysiaca (but this time Zeus is enamored with Persephone instead of Hera) but more notably, when Typhoeus attacks Olympus and Zeus is discouraged, Nike takes the form of Leto to encourage him and it's pretty telling of what Leto meant to Zeus.

One interesting similarity between Hera and Leto is that they both had a giant try to rape them. Porphyrion tried to violate Hera (Zeus inspired him to do this) and Tityus tried to violate Leto (upon Hera's order). Though both of them were killed, only Tityus got an eternal punishment in Tartarus of having his liver/heart eaten out by vultures so Zeus seems to have taken a greater offense at Tityus trying to assault Leto.

Again, I don't think Zeus would ever take anyone other than Hera as his permanent wife - she is irreplaceable to him. There's an entire myth about Hera leaving him and Zeus winning her back. Their relationship is obviously complex and involves all kinds of emotions including love and hate. But Leto is continually dear to him as well and that's something Hera can't do much about.

There’s so much debate about whether or not lloyd is a father figure to the new ninja. Ultimately I think it can be interpreted / headcanoned in a couple different ways, but I do think it’s important not to judge the show on family dynamics that are not canon (I myself enjoy the interpretation but when I watch the show im not necessarily analyzing it based on that)

However, I do think the show has drawn on stereotypical father / son tropes between Arin and Lloyd, specifically in s1 when they tossed plates around, like a game of catch- or when Arin hallucinated in s2 p1 and essentially referred to lloyd as dad because he thought he was seeing his own

It's possible that Arin Does see Lloyd as a father figure, but whereas it would be a source of Comfort to Sora, it's a Stressor for Arin. He is scared to replace his parents because it could mean they are Gone forever or he Gave Up on them- which means he Failed them, and it could cause a further divide between Lloyd and Arin. Lloyd may push, and Arin may withdraw.

I think the show is purposely making that father / son parallel, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a good thing! Only time will tell

I think the reason why I almost cried over the boy and the heron's animation is because it's hand drawn in a world full of 3d animation that tries to impress you at every stage.

(Minor spoilers for the boy and the heron, no plot points tho)

Encanto's animation was impressive for the first few minutes, then it looked every other animates movie from the 2020s. The boy and the heron does a lot less than western (and 3d) animated movies for most of the movie (excluding the backgrounds because those were paintings. Like, actual paintings.) But when it needs to, it can do more than you thought possible. They clearly spent more time on making the movements human than making it colourful and flashy.

This subtlety is also extended into the character designs. In anime especially, but to some extent pixar as well, they make regular people look like humans have sexual dimorphism, but I couldn’t tell what gender Kiriko was supposed to be until she started to speak and until my suspicions were confirmed that the clothes she wore were in fact the same ones she wore in the other world. I am also a big fan of old wrinkly people so I'm glad they were once again present in a ghibli film. I think they have a knack for portraying people from different stages of life realistically. Also a big fan of how Mahito had so much personality, especially for a 12 yo protagonist of an adventure movie. Those tweens are usually given the cookie cutter hero personality, but robbed of actual humanity.

OH BOY WHERE DO I START

I think the main difference is the fact that Tim is a bit jaded in bl3. This guy is living out of pure spite at this point and refuses to die in the casino, just like he refused to die on Elpis. Actually, he’s always refused to die for Jack or any Jack-related reasons, but the core reason for it is different. In tps Tim’s biggest qualm with Jack was the fact that he just didn’t like him which became more and more apparent as he continued helping him. Bl3 Tim has realized that he wasn’t just working for Jack, he was in servitude to him

Jack wanted Tim to kill people, so he did that. Jack wanted Tim at the casino, so he went there. Jack wanted Tim to become a pornstar, so he became one. Jack, Jack, Jack, everything was for Jack. The least he could do was die for himself, away from the casino and anything relating to Hyperion

Another thing I immediately took note of was how he sleeps around at the casino which is actually really interesting to me since that’s very much a Jack Thing to do, and you’d think that Tim would try to be as less like Jack as possible. Tim doesn’t seem to be that much of a casanova in tps, only flirting (and failing) with Moxxi, but even then it was because he thinks she’s pretty, not just because he wanted to sleep with her. I imagine Tim gets lonely at the casino since he’s always on the run and some hanky panky is a way for him to not only feel less so but also to distract himself from his whole situation. Tps Tim is, to me, the type of guy who gets flustered when someone thinks he’s coming onto them, whereas bl3 Tim is much more familiar with casual sex thanks to his job

BUT ALSO speaking of Moxxi, there are still similarities. Tim is still an awkward dork when it comes to people he really likes and that shows with how giddy he got when he was gonna talk to Moxxi (and how he completely fumbled it at first). He DEFINITELY thought about her a lot and rehearsed lines that he would say to her which is probably another coping mechanism to him. “Gotta leave the casino or you’ll never be able to tell Moxxi how you feel” type of gooey schmooey stuff. Tim is overall more passive aggressive in bl3 and holds a grudge against Lilith for vault punching Jack which lead Tim to get scarred as well, but he never judged Moxxi for viewing him as collateral damage on Helios and almost getting him killed. If there’s anything Tim is really good at it’s being in denial!!

Aside from all this Tim is just way more comfortable at what he does, even if he doesn’t necessarily like it. In tps he considers the dopplegänger program worth it at times because he’s getting good in combat, but there’s a cognitive dissonance there. Bl3 Tim is, again, jaded. He still doesn’t like killing people, but this time it’s about self preservation, not doing someone else’s dirty work because you can’t pay your student loans (god does he miss worrying about student loans)

I tried to write this last night but was too high and it got really depressing, so here's an extremely purposefully light-hearted one to make up for how sad I made myself! <3 Ever so slightly suggestive but also only a little bit under the cut.

A long stretch of days with no casualties means getting bored. Getting bored means drinking. Getting bored for too many days in a row means too much drinking, and that had led Trapper and Hawkeye to stumbling back into the Swamp at three in the morning plastered out of their minds.

Hawkeye, ever-so-slightly more sober, dumps Trapper into his cot, giggling. “I can’t believe you! Flirting with Igor… you’re a madman, you. You’re– you’re going to get yourself food poisoning just kissing him.”

Across the tent, Frank snores loudly, affectedly, and unconvincingly.

“Aw, c’mon, Hawk,” Trapper says, fighting to get his blanket to cooperate. It’s like a goddamn circle. Or a sphere. Where the fuck are the edges? “Only ‘cause you aren’t paying enough attention to me.”

“I pay plenty of attention to you.” Hawkeye leans in, more than a bit jerky, still holding on to the last dregs of the bottle of whiskey they’d gone through at Rosie’s. “You… I woulda jerked you off in public, if you asked me.”

Frank scoffs, turns over, and puts his pillow over his head. Trapper hopes he smothers himself.

“What about in private?” Trapper leers.

“With Frank right there? He’ll have a crisis.”

Trapper pouts, finally finds the edge of his blanket, and snuggles as best as he can into his cot. “Gonna kiss me good night, at least?”

“No.”

“Hawk.”

“No!”

“Hawkeye.”

“You’re gonna taste gross.”

“Hawkeye, please?”

Frank shoots to a seat, a scowl burned into his face. “Pierce,” he snaps, “would you kiss him already so someone can get some rest around here?”

Then he’s turning over, facing the wall, and stuffing his pillow back over his head.

Trapper looks back up at Hawkeye. “Dad said it’s okay.”

Hawkeye stumbles in, nearly sloshing the whiskey onto Trapper’s bedsheets despite how little is left in the bottle. He takes a look at it, frowns, downs the last sip, and presses his lips against Trapper’s.

The whiskey’s already warm from Hawkeye’s mouth when Trapper parts his lips and lets Hawk pass it to him. The heat curls in his gut so tightly that he’s certain he’d be dragging Hawk to the supply shed if he wasn’t too drunk to move. When Hawk tries to pull away Trapper grabs him by the shoulder and swipes his tongue over his lips, pulling away the last dregs of whiskey so he can taste Hawkeye’s flesh beneath it.

When he does let Hawkeye go, Hawk looks down at him with pupils that are dilated with far more than just the dim light. “Night, Trap,” he says.

“Night, handsome,” Trapper slurs.

Frank sighs, as loudly as possible, so Hawkeye throws a pillow at him.

It's me. Your local Terrifying Endo-Neutral Mod. Which clearly means I'm a disgusting bigot according to some voices in syscourse. Against which side? Idk pick one.

I've discussed before, briefly, why I use the endo-neutral label. I could go into all of the reasons someone may not wish to take a label for themselves, why I personally think the labeling system is stupid as fuck, etc.

Instead, I'm going to get into the main reason why fear mongering to one particular group about "hidden endos taking over their community" is unhelpful.

To the people pushing it, pretty much all they're saying is "yeah idk your coworker might be a tulpamancer or smth lmao", but to the targeted audience.... that's not what they're going to hear.

The people you're talking to are firmly convinced that endos either don't exist and are faking it or that they're "real" systems who are in denial about trauma and being encouraged by a community that's really bad about accidentally dismissing trauma symptoms.

They're not going to hear "endos are existing near me". They're going to hear "the community that's working to deny the existence of my trauma is spreading their ideology and making it harder for me and people like me to get help".

And I get that that's the point lol. I get that it's a message designed specifically to harm people who think that way. But it's not fucking helping anybody. It's leaning into the same fear thats making anti-endos so hostile.

The more people spread messages like that, the more of a threat they become. The more of a threat they become, the more justified any retaliation against the endo community becomes in the minds of people who are already afraid of losing resources or being invalidated by the horrifically ableist culture at large. You're not Just hurting the people you want to. Every goddamn time the pot is stirred, EVERYONE gets hurt.

Are people going to listen to this? Probably not. Am I going to scream into the void about it anyway? Yep. Makes me feel better lol. I literally just want people to be kind to one another, whether it's a lost cause or not.
