159: Queensrÿche // Operation: Mindcrime
Operation: Mindcrime Queensrÿche 1988, Manhattan
Queensrÿche have always been difficult to explain to friends outside the metal world. The sound of their commercial prime is mostly too posh to be lumped in with Iron Maiden or Judas Priest; their take on prog doesn’t exactly evoke Rush or Yes; they have the aesthetics of a hair band but they’re so self-serious! The reaction I mostly get is simply, “I don’t like this,” which is fair, and they haven’t even seen Geoff Tate, owner of the most punchable face this side of Richard Spencer.
youtube
I think they’re great though, despite their pretentions and because of them. Their most celebrated record, 1988’s Operation: Mindcrime, is a concept album about a brainwashed leftist assassin that could be best described as Jesus Christ Superstar performed by coked-out vampires. As with its equally excellent predecessor Rage for Order (1986), Mindcrime is an ambitious mishmash of antiauthoritarian politics, techno-paranoia, reactionary positions on drug addiction, and light fetish play. Despite grappling with huge ideas, this is neither deep nor intellectually coherent stuff, but it provides the band with the ideal backdrop for the decadent, urban form of metal they had by-now perfected.
The demands of getting Mindcrime’s story across mean most of the lyrics are delivered in the form of in-character monologues (“Hi I’m [character], let me explain my motivations to you”), which would be dreary if the music didn’t absolutely cook. The sabre dance-like interplay between guitarists Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton that distinguished their earlier efforts has evolved in a raunchier, pop direction without sacrificing its ingenuity, while Scott Rockenfield remains one of the most ‘musical’ drummers in the genre. Flying over all is Tate, whose combination of limitless range and a downright bitchy vocal timbre gives this stuff an emotive, even femme-y quality uncommon at the time in the heavier reaches of the genre.
Tradition teaches us that the ten-minute song on any ‘80s metal record is going to be the band’s clearance sale for gently-used surplus riffs, but Mindcrime’s “Suite Sister Mary” (dumb title) is something else entirely. A gothy, theatrical duet between Tate, as addled terrorist Nikki, and guest vocalist Pamela Moore as Sister Mary, a teenaged nun/sex worker, it’s closer to a Jim Steinman production than anything else the metal genre had yet produced—we’ve got a Latin choir, orchestral arrangements, burning thighs, conflating faith with the feeling of getting a boner in too-tight pants, stately guitar harmonies, and only two choruses. Though they never really produced anything quite like it again, “Suite Sister Mary” makes a nice synecdoche for the go-our-own-way chutzpah that allowed Queensrÿche to become a unique force in their genre, and Operation: Mindcrime a classic of ‘80s music as a whole.

I forgot an incredibly important band that belongs on the list!! Queensrÿche!
I cannot believe I forgot about them, they are actually one of the bands that helped introduce me to rock and metal! Most of their songs are about corruption and things like addiction, heartbreak and death. They have this INCREDIBLE concept album called "Operation: Mindcrime." and it tells an interesting story. "Operation Mindcrime tells the story of a recovering drug addict called Nikki who is tired of how corrupt the society he lives in is, and ends up becoming a sleeper agent for an underground revolutionary movement that deals in assassinating political figures."
This album and so many of their other songs have a Fallout feel to them. Queensrÿche is getting very close to the realm of divorced dad rock, but
Songs and bands that I think belong in Fallout
Most of these are heavy metal or rock! So be prepared :)
*"Let's Hang Together" - by Twin Temple. (This band is described as Satanic doo wop and their tune and vibe matches Fallout perfectly. Older sounding music but with a darker vibe.)
*The album called "Hail the Apocalypse" - by the band Avatar. This album has a couple of apocalypse related songs. This album (And the band) really reminds me of the perk Wild Wasteland. The apocalypse is a dangerous and brooding place, but there's a certain level of wackiness and uneasiness to it all. Kind of like a Freak Show.
Smells Like a Freak Show is actually the name of a song on another Avatar album. It also makes me think of Fallout, mainly raiders. The album is called the Black Waltz. The song "Smells Like a Freakshow" Makes me think of The Pack in Nuka World lol
*Every single one of Bon Jovi's songs. Every single one, especially the album "Slippery When Wet."
*Iron Maiden. I really enjoy how they sing about history, war, folklore, stories, etc. All of their songs are incredible, but some of them really fit the Fallout vibes. The song "When The Wild Wind Blows" Is a very emotional and moving song about the end of the world. The world ends in that song by nukes, just like in fallout. Even if you don't like metal I still suggest reading the lyrics, Iron maiden has some incredible story telling.
*Megadeth! They have numerous songs about the apocalypse, how much war sucks, and how the government is terrible. Perfectly fitting for Fallout. Just prepare yourself for the lead singers voice lol
*Black Sabbath - One of the founding fathers of rock. A lot of their songs protest war and the government. Their song "War Pigs" is fitting for fallout's world, along with many others.
*The rest of the "Unholy Trinity" and founding fathers of heavy metal. Led Zepplin and Deep purple.
*Maybe other classic rock bands and singers, like Kansas, Aeorsmith, Heart, Rolling stones, Cheap Trick, and Motley Crue. But these bands are getting awfully close to the divorced dad rock category so always keep that in mind.
*Dangerous Toys (A lot of the rock bands/hairbands that took a more humorous turn really remind me of Fallout. A few Dangerous Toys songs remind me of the radio host "Redeye" from Nuka World's raider radio. Mainly the songs "Gimme' No Lip" and "Teas'n Pleas'n"
*I really want to say Slipknot and Nu metal as a whole. I know Slipknot, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones and System of A Down don't fit Fallout as well as some of the other bands and songs. But the idea of hearing "Break Stuff" While out in the wastes is very entertaining to me.
*Metallica (Just their vibes and sound feel so right for the universe of fallout. Their songs are often about struggles and intense emotions like despair and grief.
*Maybe bands that are nuclear apocalypse and similar themed. Like Nuclear Assault, Municipal Waste, and many more.
*This is more of a headcanon: I love the idea of Pre-bombs Fallout having a large punk/hardcore scene, and lots and lots of Hippies. Just so many people out there doing drugs/chems, living life, protesting war and writing music.
These are just some of the bands that I think would fit into Fallout! If you think I left something out then comment the band/singer! If you have any thoughts/headcanons please share those as well!!
#rock n roll#classic rock#queensryche#heavy metal#metalhead ramblings#metalhead#fallout#fallout music#music in fallout#I saw them live and they were sooo fucking loud I couldn't hear much except ringing for a few days LOL It so worth it#wear ear protection to concerts lol

It’s technically passed midnight, which marks today May 3rd - the thirtieth anniversary of Queensryche’s phenomenal Operation: Mindcrime! I mixed up the dates REAL terribly, and wanted to have this plus a boatload of other goodies prepared for the occasion - a big anniversary for my favorite series??? isn’t this what the hip folk like the celebrate? - but unfortunately, so far, this is all I have to show for it. :’D This is a banner for a WIP free-to-use skin I probably won’t be releasing until the 8th (which is what I THOUGHT was the anniversary date, oops). There might be some tweaks between now and then, but eeeeeh, who knows? The banner art is credit to HopereiV, but every other aspect is original. o> Here’s to a happy Mindcrime day! *shoots confetti*

Here is part 1.

I don’t really know the game yet
I’m bent on submission
Religion is to blame
I’m the new messiah
Death Angel with a gun
Dangerous in my silence
Deadly to my cause”

A while back, I sent in an ask saying that I kin from a fairly obscure source: a prog metal concept album entitled Operation: Mindcrime. I kin Nikki. Not too long after, someone sent in a reply message stating that they kin Mary. Idk if that person is still out there, but if you are, I just wanted to let you know I saw Queensrÿche live for the first time tonight, and they played Spreading the Disease, and. I dunno! Just made the whole thing come to mind. It was an Experience . Hope you’re doing well, Mary, and that spring treats you kindly.

Crónica Geoff Tate Operation Mindcrime y Till Death Do Us Part.

Setlist:

Blue Boy

We Killed Romance

Six Rock Operas Released in the Wake of ‘Tommy’
Today marks the 49th anniversary of The Who’s seminal rock opera ‘Tommy.’ The album, about a boy who becomes deaf, blind and dumb after witnessing a traumatic event, would become one of the first and most well-known rock operas in music history.
It is not unheard of for a band to want to tell a story with their music. And in the nearly five decades following the release of ‘Tommy,’ there have been countless other bands who have released their own rock operas. In some instances, these works have garnered a lot of attention for their respective artist, either reviving their careers or launching them into the stratosphere.
Inspired by the album’s anniversary, Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at some of the rock operas to come out in the wake of ‘Tommy.’ From coming of age stories to farces about time travel and beyond, here are six that have had an impact on the musical landscape.
1. The Who, ‘Quadrophenia’: I would be remiss if I didn’t mention The Who’s other rock opera. ‘Quadrophenia’ was released in 1973 and was the band’s first album written entirely by Pete Townshend. The story follows Jimmy, a mod fed up with his life as he comes to terms with the changing world around him. While it never saw the kind of success ‘Tommy’ did, many critics at the time felt it was a much better story and album, and is widely considered one of the band’s best albums to this day.
2. Green Day, ‘American Idiot’: Released in 2004, ‘American Idiot’ reinvigorated Green Day’s career after previous album ‘Warning’ failed to maintain the band’s momentum. The story is pretty similar to that of ‘Quadrophenia,’ following punk “Jesus of Suburbia” as he tries to find himself. ‘American Idiot’ pairs social commentary with strong melodies and lyrics, transcending the band’s punk roots. Green Day released another rock opera, ‘21st Century Breakdown,’ five years later, but it never gained the same kind of traction, and a handful of its songs became part of the ‘American Idiot’ Broadway production.
3. My Chemical Romance, ‘The Black Parade’: Two years after Green Day released ‘American Idiot,’ My Chemical Romance decided to make their own rock opera (with the same producer, Rob Cavallo). ‘The Black Parade’ was a big album for the band, who had found success within the pop-punk/“emo” scene with their first two albums but had yet to hit mainstream notoriety. The story centered on a man dying of cancer looking back at his life and his experience in the afterlife. For a band that spent as much effort on theatrics as they did on music, a rock opera makes sense, as the band virtually became the Black Parade in its wake.
4. Ludo, ‘Broken Bride’: A minor pop-punk band out of St. Louis, Ludo made a name for themselves in 2008 with the minor hit “Love Me Dead” from their major label debut, ‘You’re Aweful, I Love You.’ But before people discovered their fun, over the top style, the band put out a mini rock opera that was pretty well received (perhaps the reason for their discovery). ‘Broken Bride’ told the fantastical story of a man who travels through time to save his wife. Another band who doesn’t shy away from the dramatic, ‘Broken Bride’ is the perfect reflection of their storytelling prowess.
5. Pink Floyd, ‘The Wall’: Besides ‘Tommy,’ ‘The Wall’ is probably the best known rock opera out of to come out of the 1970s. The story focuses on famed rock musician Pink and all the factors that led him to isolate himself from the outside world. Though originally paned, ‘The Wall’ became one of the band’s defining albums, even giving them their only number one hit with “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2).”
6. Queensryche, ‘Operation: Mindcrime’: In 1988, Metal band Queensryche released ‘Operation: Mindcrime,’ their third album. The story follows protagonist Nikki, a reformed drug addict who becomes brainwashed into becoming a political assassin. Unlike the other albums on this list, ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ was recorded as if it were a stage production, with singer Pamela Moore singing the parts for Sister Mary and actor Anthony Valentine taking on the role of Dr. X, while frontman Geoff Tate played protagonist Nikki. The album went on to become the band’s first platinum-selling album and directly led to even bigger successes. ‘Operation: Mindcrime’ is also the only album on this list to warrant a sequel, which was released in 2006 and featured Ronnie James Dio taking over the role of Dr. X.
In the nearly five decades since The Who found success with their album ‘Tommy,’ many other artists have followed in their footsteps to create their own rock operas. From psychedelic to punk to metal, bands of all genres have been able to have success with the format. Such has proved to be an excellent way to push an artist’s boundaries and tell a story in new and exciting ways.
